A photochromic material is one which undergoes a change of color when exposed to light and reverts to its original color when the light is removed. Review articles carrying extensive bibliographies have been written by Brown and Shaw (1) and by Schwab and Bertelson (2). Organics. Schwab and Bertelson divide the reactions in different organic photochromic materials into some half-dozen categories; Windsor (3) reduces these to the following three main classes of general interest, based on how they work. 1. Stereoisomers. Absorption of light breaks one of the chemical bonds in a. ring molecule, thus allowing the molecule to unwind and form a different geometrical arrangement. The reverse process is a reforming of the bond. Examples of this class are the spiropyrans and the anils. 2. Dyes. A triphenyl methane dye, for example, is oxidized by energetic light; the absorption characteristics of the positive ion so formed are different from those of the original electrically neutral benzene rings. 3. Triplet States. In the class of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, ground-state molecules are excited first to a singlet state by irradiation, and then go, via the lowest triplet state, to an excited triplet state. Visible light is absorbed in the triplet-triplet transition.

Lime has become a general and loosely used term to denote almost any kind of calcareous material or finely divided form of limestone or dolomite, as well as burned forms of lime. However, according to Webster, lime is only calcined limestone (known as quicklime, unslaked lime, or calcium oxide). It also embraces the secondary product of quicklime, i.e., hydrated lime or slaked lime (calcium hydroxide). There are two basic types of limestone used for lime manufacture-high calcium and high magnesium (dolomitic). The dolomitic quicklimes and hydrated limes correspond to their "high calcium" counterparts. The only difference is that the dolomitic types are a combination of the elements calcium and magnesium, in varying percents, whereas high calicum limes contain less than 5% MgO down to 1/2%. In either case a pure form of limestone of at least 97% combined carbonate content is needed to make salable lime, barring a few exceptions. The calcination of both types is diagrammed chemically as follows: [ ] In the foregoing reversible reactions the limestone is burned (calcined) in lime kilns, with the carbon dioxide content of the stone expelled as a gas. The weight loss during calcination of pure high calcium limestone is 44%; with equimolecular dolomitic limestone, the weight loss is 48%. Since lime has a strong affinity for CO_, particularly if moisture is present, it will readily revert to its original carbonate form. This occurs when quicklime "air-slakes" and adsorbs CO.. from the air. Thus, quicklime is perishable and should be stored in dry, water-tight areas. Depending upon the type of kiln used and the physical structure of the stone, the size of the quicklime may range from sandlike granules to 8 in. lumps. However, pebble sizes ranging from 1/4 in. to 2 in. are the most common. Screened quicklime fines are also com¬pressed (pelletized) into 1 in. pellets. For some purposes ground or pulverized forms of quicklime are used, ranging from No. 10 mesh to dust. Generally a pebble of quicklime is about the same size as the pebble of limestone before calcination (perhaps shrinking slightly). A more stable form of lime is hydrated lime. This is obtained by adding water to quicklime, slaking it into a dry, fine, subsieve size white powder. Because its affinity for moisture has been satisfied, it is not vulnerable to further moisture like quicklime. However, it has the same strong affinity for CO_. Rare earth elements (REEs) have special properties that prompted their extensive use in high-tech applications. The demand for REE has, therefore, increased over the past years, resulting in the supply risk of the materials. Extraction from non-conventional low-grade ores, like easy-to-mine ion adsorption clays (IACs), by hydrometallurgical methods is being explored to supplement the supply of REEs. The extraction of REEs from low tenor IAC leach solutions requires enrichment using cost-effective methods such as precipitation. Therefore, the aim of this study was to understand the recovery of REEs from IAC leach solutions using various reagents for precipitation. In the first part of the study, recoveries of REEs from IAC leach solutions through direct precipitation using H2C2O4 and NH4HCO3, as well as antisolvent crystallization using C2H5OH, were predicted via thermodynamic modelling using OLI Stream Analyzer. Verification experiments were then conducted through the use of an agitated reactor. Simulation results showed that high yields of REEs were possible using each of the reagents, but large quantities of C2H5OH were required. Experimental results confirmed the high yields predicted from simulations. Precipitation with H2C2O4 was found to selectively recover REEs while rejecting Al. However, utilization of NH4HCO3 and C2H5OH resulted in the co-precipitation of Al. Furthermore, the yield of Y from antisolvent crystallization was significantly lower than the theoretical value. The product recovered from antisolvent crystallization consisted of well faceted, large crystalline particles, which filtered faster than the fine, amorphous REE carbonates recovered using NH4HCO3. REE oxalates were crystalline, larger than the REE carbonates and, overall, showed the highest filtration rate.

Screening is a critical part of many mineral processing circuits and keeping the aperture of the screening media within specification is vital to ensure efficient performance of the processing plant. Typical ways of estimating and/or measuring the wear of the screening media vary from very subjective methods (for instance, using the human eye) to manually checking the width of a few of the more severely worn gaps with a measurement device. Subjective methods can be flawed by human error while manual checking can distort the polyurethane or rubber materials that are used in several types of screening media. All of these errors can cause either premature replacement of panels or, even worse, poor screening of the material.Metso Process Technology and Innovation (PTI) and Metso Screening Media Solutions (SMS) have developed an innovative method that measures screen aperture using advanced image processing techniques. Field trials of the device are presented in this paper, which shows the comparison between the different methods of measuring apertures. Case studies demonstrate how the system, when combined with ScreenTrack, MetsoÆs industry leading maintenance system, and screening media, is providing users with the best possible screening solutions.

In practice a sampling solution is a compromise of many requirements: the sample should be representative; the sampling system should also be reliable, less than 95 per cent availability restricts the use of the assayed sample for process control purposes; no sample is the worst sample, and investment costs and installation space/layout are frequently a restriction. For instance, online X-ray analysers for process control introduce a delimitation error by the nature of X-ray physics. Thus only in special cases a relative accuracy better than three per cent relative, as one standard deviation, is achieved. A sampling system for process control needs not to be, as representative, for so many sample properties, as one for composite laboratory analysis samples. Sampling system maintenance is also an important issue. There are many sampling systems in the industry which have been difficult to maintain and are in disuse for lack of resources or incentives to keep them running. Pierre Gy developed the most generally accepted sampling theory. One of the main principles is that all particles in a one-dimensional process stream should have equal chances of being included into the sample. A correctly designed and operated transversing cutter comes close to this goal but has limitations in temporal representativity. For slurries an acceptable solution in many cases is to use a fixed vertical cutter(s) in a position where the slurry is well-mixed by turbulence and other means. For online analysis, reliability problems are mostly related to faulty design or installation of the piping system to the analyser. Properties of material processed, process flow sheet and piping details before and after the sampler have to be taken into account when deciding on which sampling arrangement is appropriate. Guidelines and some solutions to these issues are presented in this paper.

The transition from open pit to underground mining represents a key strategic challenge in modern mine planning. This paper presents a multicriteria and multivariable methodology to plan such a transition, integrating technical, economic, environmental, and social considerations. The proposed framework focuses on risk reduction (de-risking) through the identification of alternative development paths, the use of stochastic simulation to model geological and technical uncertainty, and different mining strategies such as methods, production rates, sequence, etc. for ultimate underground implementation. The study summarizes the limitations of traditional planning methods—which usually treat the open pit and underground mine designs as independent processes—, also often it considers a single mining method and production rate for the underground option. Instead it is proposed an integrated approach that leverages synergies between both mining methods and scalable production rates. Also the proposed methodology incorporates the definition of critical variables (geotechnical, economic, and social, among others), the construction of multiple operational and technological transition paths, and the evaluation of each path under criteria of economic attractiveness and practical do-ability (capacity to be executed). Using simulation tools (SIMPLAN for operational performance and SIMVAL for economic evaluation), probabilistic distributions of the different path are obtained, enabling the quantification of the project’s Value at Risk (VaR). A subsequent multicriteria analysis weights the expected profitability against the feasibility of execution of each alternative, producing a decision matrix that provides a framework for evaluating the different project path. As a result, the proposed approach identifies OP→UG transition strategies that maximize business value by capturing remaining resources while minimizing financial and operational risks. Finally, strategic conclusions and recommendations for the industry are provided, emphasizing the importance of early transition planning even challenging the open pit sequencing of the latest push backs by introducing early underground operations. Future work includes strengthening the methodology—such as integrating real-time analysis and adaptive decision-making—and providing recommendations for its application in various mining operations. In summary, this paper delivers a technical and professional framework to guide mining companies on when and how to carry out a successful transition from open pit to underground mining, balancing resource recovery with financial, operational, and social security.

Magnesium aluminate spinel is widely used in the metallurgical industry as refractory material, however, natural magnesium aluminate spinel is rare and most of the magnesium aluminate spinel is synthetic. The traditional synthesis of magnesium aluminate spinel often needs high temperature, which leads to more energyconsumption. In this article, solid phase sintering process was employed to synthesize magnesium aluminate spinel, in which, magnesium and aluminum oxide were used as raw materials and magnesium and aluminum powder were used as composite additives. The mass ratio of magnesium and aluminum on the effect of synthesis of magnesium aluminate spinel and the characteristic of the synthesis at different temperature and time was discussed. Experiment found that the synthesis temperature was observably lowered when the addition of magnesium and aluminum was 2.0% and 1.0% respectively.

The process of accumulative roll bonding (ARB) has been applied to wrought magnesium alloy AZ31. Accumulative roll bonding results in severe plastic deformation of sheet material. In AZ31, this process leads to the refinement of the microstructure by dynamic recrystallization. The refinement of the microstructure results in an improvement in mechanical properties with potential for producing materials for superplastic forming. In this work AZ31 was bonded with up to 64 layers and the potential of roll cladding with aluminium was also investigated. The development of microstructure and the mechanical properties are reported here.

"This work has as its objective to evaluate the effect of incorporation of the powder waste retained in the eletrostatic precipitator of the sintering stage from an integrated steel making plant on the physical and mechanical properties of a red ceramic. Formulations were prepared with incorporation of the waste in amounts up to 20 wt.% into a kaolinitic clay. Rectangular specimens were prepared by uniaxial mold-press at 20 MPa and then fired at 750, 900 and 1050°C. The evaluated physical and mechanical properties were: linear shrinkage, water absorption and flexural rupture strength. The results showed that the waste has a potential to be used into red ceramics. The incorporation of the waste enhanced the properties of the ceramic, decreasing the water absorption and increasing the mechanical strength at all investigated temperatures.IntroductionThe sintering stage of an integrated steel-making plant is dedicated to the agglomeration of a mixture of iron ore, coke or coal, fluxes and water [1]. It is a common practice in this stage to use of solid wastes with great amounts of iron in the form of sludge and powder. One of the atmospheric pollutants generated during the sintering process is the particulate material, which is normally retained in an equipment denote as electrostatic precipitator. This equipment retains very small particulates, present in the gaseous emissions by application of an electrical potential difference in between the plates that the fluid is forced to go through. In situations where foundation piles are located in proximity to existing or future tunnels, it is typical for the tunnel owner to require that sleeving of the piles be carried out to at least the invert of the tunnels to minimise any load transfer to the tunnel lining. In competent rock, this practice may be sometimes unnecessary, thus uneconomical. This paper presents an assessment of the effect of pile loading from one of the multi-storey buildings at Barangaroo South in Sydney on the adjacent future Sydney Metro tunnels. It was originally required by Transport for NSW (TfNSW) that the piles be sleeved below the tunnel invert level; however, the building developer wanted to reduce the pile sleeving depth to achieve a more economical solution due to the large number of load transfer piles being required for the project. To assess this feasibility, a full 3D commercial numerical code, FLAC3D, was used to carry out this complex soil-structure interaction analyses. Based on these assessments, it was demonstrated successfully to the TfNSW that the pile sleeving may be terminated at 2 m above the tunnel invert level. For this arrangement, the investigations found that the loading on the piles should have negligible adverse impact on the tunnel lining design. As a result of such an assessment, the proposed pile sleeving level was approved by TfNSW, thus offering an economical foundation solution for the project.CITATION:Azad, F M, Oliveira, D A F and Wong, P K, 2014. High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) as an efficient grinding technology plays a major role in mineral processing plants. Investigating the effects of this technology on different parts of mineral processing circuits reveals this technology’s capability. In this paper, HPGR grinding effects on an iron ore beneficiation circuit, in comparison with conventional crushing systems were studied. A representative feed sample was taken from an iron ore beneficiation plant, then crushed to minus 6 mm in a laboratory by two methods: HPGR and cone crusher, and finally a concentrate plant circuit was simulated. Plant simulation was performed by doing laboratory tests consisting of grinding, magnetic separation, flotation and filtration on HPGR and cone crusher products, respectively. According to comminution tests results, in particle sizes smaller than 6 mm, a cone crusher product is coarser than an HPGR product. Also, the Bond ball mill work index of the HPGR product was 10% less than the crusher product. Therefore, based on the Bond formula in applying HPGR, ball mill power consumption decreased by 12%. After ball milling to minus 100 microns, magnetic separation tests results showed that the recovery of the cone crusher circuit output was 90.8% and the product Fe grade was 66.4%. For the HPGR circuit these figures were 87.6% and 67.3%, respectively. Therefore, by using an HPGR, a higher Fe grade of the final concentrate was achieved. A flotation test was then performed on the magnetic separation concentrate, where the results showed that the crusher circuit recovery and the sulfur grade of the product were 96.5% and 0.192%, respectively; whereas the HPGR circuit recovery was 97.2% with a sulfur content of 0.185%. Findings revealed that flotation performance in the HPGR circuit was more efficient than the crusher circuit. Vacuum filtration tests on concentrate produced through the HPGR circuit resulted in a moisture content of 12% that was 2% higher than the crusher circuit’s concentrate in the same condition. A major challenge in managing coal seam gas (CSG) water is predicting how much water will be produced as the industry develops. Klohn Crippen Berger Ltd (KCB) was commissioned by the Queensland Department of Natural Resources and Mines (DNRM) to develop a tool to forecast where, when and how much CSG water will be produced in the Surat and Southern Bowen Basins under various industry expansion scenarios.The water production tool (WPT) uses the Theis equation, a non-equilibrium groundwater flow equation that accounts for the effect of pumping time on well yield in confined aquifers, to predict water production volumes. Where multiple pumping wells are in close proximity, the required pumping rates for coal seam depressurisation are reduced. Therefore, pumping effects are projected spatially to assess interference effects between wells. Water production is then upscaled to the projected scale of the CSG industry within the Surat and Southern Bowen Basins.Two modifications were made to address the dual phase nature of CSG extraction (a transmissivity reduction factor) and the impact of weathering at the eastern margin of the Surat Basin (a ænear edge effectÆ factor). These factors modify relevant hydrogeological parameters in a consistent and defensible manner to more closely match observed water production.The WPT was verified by comparing results to equivalent Theis equation calculations and to type curves provided by CSG proponents. Calibration was achieved by varying the spatial distribution and intensity of the near edge effect factor in conjunction with a chi-squared analysis of residuals.The tool, which is now being maintained and further developed by the Centre for Water in the Minerals Industry (CWiMI), was built to balance numerical complexity against relative flexibility and simulation speed. Capricorn Copper Pty Ltd (CCPL) are operating the Capricorn Copper Mine located at Gunpowder, Queensland. As current holder of the environmental authority for the site, CCPL have obligations to rehabilitate areas of the mine that are no longer operational and have the potential to cause/contribute to environmental harm. CCPL sought a voluntary Transitional Environmental Program (TEP) to provide an agreed program of works to cap and rehabilitate the former Mammoth Tailings Storage Facility. The voluntary TEP contained conditions that were required to be met, to reduce the potential for environmental harm from the facility. The former Mammoth Tailings Storage Facility commenced use in the early 1970’s, and is an unlined valley in-fill structure, contemporary in design compared with other such approved structures of the era. The decommissioned Mammoth Tailings Storage Facility, now known as the Old Tailings Storage Facility (Old TSF), has been a legacy source of contamination due to the existing capping not meeting modern cover criterion, and allowing oxidisation and infiltration to the underlying acid forming tailings resulting in Acid and Metalliferous Drainage (AMD) from the facility. A cover design for the Old TSF, and other mine waste storages onsite that required clay capping, had been proposed by previous operators. Under the TEP cover design phase, it was identified that a key constraint was the lack of significant quantities of low permeability clay onsite. The lack of available clay prompted the consideration of alternate lining materials for the Old TSF, with a Bituminous Geomembrane Liner (BGM) being adopted as the preferred alternative. The BGM compared favourably with clay-based materials on seepage analysis, and led to other benefits by eliminating the need for borrowing clay off site, reducing the site’s environmental footprint, and reducing construction time. The BGM cover system on the Old TSF is being monitored with the intent to use this as a case study to confirm expected performance, enabling the cover design to potentially be adopted on the remainder of the site’s mine waste storages that require capping.

Current metallurgical processes lack selective and efficient REE recovery from aqueous leach liquors. Antisolvent crystallisation is used to selectively recover pure inorganic salts from aqueous solutions without excessive chemical use in ambient conditions. Yttrium sulfate octahydrate (Y2(SO4)3.8H2O) was used as a representative rare earth salt to investigate the effect of antisolvent selection on the crystal morphology and size distribution of the final crystalline product produced through antisolvent crystallisation. The antisolvents of choice were short length alcohols that are water miscible i.e. methanol, ethanol, 2-propanol and t-butanol. All experimental parameters except the type of antisolvent were kept constant under isothermal conditions. The large reduction in solubility of the salt by the antisolvent creates high supersaturations. This leads to high product yields as observed in this study at > 91%. In general, a variety of morphologies were successfully formed in each individual alcohol including; rods, plates, prismatic cubes and starburst clusters. The powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis indicated that Y2(SO4)3.8H2O was the only species present for all final products. There was a change observed from the starburst and rod structures for the shorter alcohols towards prismatic cubes for the longer alcohols due to different strengths in the solute-antisolvent interaction at the crystal growth faces. The crystal sizes increased with an increase in the alcohol chain length because of the lower supersaturation conditions due to a limit in the mass transfer induced by the bulkier alcohol structure. In conclusion, it has been shown that the particle morphology and size can be greatly affected by the selection of antisolvent even under high supersaturation conditions, contributing to understanding the effect of different antisolvents on the final particle characteristics. The engineering of favoured product characteristics can therefore be achieved by antisolvent crystallisation, presenting a viable alternative process for the recovery of REE. Further, on page 246, "The first area of study was the Josephine peridotite, now identified as an ophiolite terrane, located in northern California and south-western Oregon (Fig. 3). Here, it was felt that we could test the models shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and, if successful, expand the model and test it in other chromite districts in the US and around the world." My comments refer only to chromite deposits in Europe and the Middle East. First, I question that may chromite deposits occur in the idealized ophiolite section shown in Fig. 1. Second, although some podiform deposits (referring to morphology) have been important (Guleman, Turkey, for example), the stratiform deposits are of greater importance in tonnage and frequently grade. Examples include Nada, Yugoslavia; Bulqiza, Albania; Xerolivado, Greece; Saranovsk, Russia; and Abdasht, Iran. Reply by J.C. Wynn Mr. Hillebrand raises two issues that deserve a serious response. One issue is basically subjective and the other is ultimately political. First, the question of where (and how many) podiform chromite deposits are found in the idealized ophiolite section of Dickey (1975). The Dickey model is still perhaps somewhat controversial (Panayoutou, 1980), but our experience in the Josephine ophiolite of northern California (Wynn, 1980; and Albers, 1983) shows that the model works well there. Virtually all the chromite is found in dunite lenses in the tectonite peridotite (harzburgite). Since there are few complete ophiolites exposed in the world, the model will probably never satisfy everyone. The degree of acceptance is a function of any individual's subjective experience. Second, it is well known that stratiform chromite contributes more than 95% of the chromite reserves presently known in the world, and it could be reasonably argued that there is no point in exploring for or exploiting podiform deposits further. The title of the paper, however, was in part 'strategic minerals geophysical research'; chromite is considered a strategic and critical mineral of the US and many other industrialized nations. Stratiform deposits in South Africa and Zimbabwe account for most of the chromite reserves in the world. Because sulfur and phosphorus are very harmful in steel products, there are increasing requirements for refining these elements from ferroalloys industries. Hence, in the present study, simultaneous desulfurization (de-S) and reducing dephosphorization (Rde-P) from silicomanganese (SiMn) alloy were investigated using metal-slag equilibration method under highly reducing condition at 1773 K. Experiments were carried out by equilibration between SiMn alloy and MnO-based slag in graphite crucible under p(O2) = 10−18 atm. Slag composition was designed by changing basicity (CaO/SiO2) and MnO content at fixed Al2O3 (=20%) and MgO (=5%) contents. De-S ratio increased with increasing basicity until C/S = 1.5 whereas Rde-P ratio was not significantly affected by slag basicity. This was because thermodynamic driving force of de-S reaction was greater than that of Rde-P reaction under present experimental conditions. The de-S and Rde-P ratios commonly increased with decreasing oxygen partial pressure.
