"Indian coal industry is the world's third largest in terms of production and fourth largest in terms of proven coal resources. Indian coal deposits are generally of high ash content varying from 24 to 50%. The coking coal reserves of India constitute about 12% of the total coal inventory, and the coals are washed in washeries, before being used for metallurgical purposes. The processes used for washing coking coal is Jigs, Heavy medium bath and Cyclones for the sizes upto 0.5mm, while the coal fines are washed in spirals and conventional flotation cells. Extensive studies were carried out for understanding the performance of an operating conventional flotation plant. The performance studies revealed that appreciable quantity of clean coal is being lost in the tailings due to varied reasons and the required quantity and quality was not achieved. In this study, laboratory Flotation experiments were carried out to examine the cleaning characteristics of the said tailing and to determine the effective process parameters for recovery of clean coal at desired ash level ( 16-17%). Response Surface Methodology was applied to investigate the operating conditions of the Froth Flotation for modeling and optimization. Primary study reflects that there is a possibility to recover clean coal at 16-17% ash level with a yield of about 60-70% from that Flotation tailing of feed ash about 28%.INTRODUCTIONMost of the Indian coking coals are difficult in cleaning characteristics and high ash content due to its drift origin and its age of formation for more than 225 million years. Indian coking coal reserve is limited about 12% of total coal reserve. The minerals are homogeneously mixed with the coal macerals. The open cast mining practice and mechanized mining methods are being adopted to meet the increasing demands of coals resulting in generation of more coal fines and subsequently the quality is deteriorated. Indian good quality coking coal reserves of higher seams are fast depleting and hence coking coals of difficult cleaning characteristics of lower seams (LVC) are being now explored. Due to increased mechanization of coal mines to cope up the increased demand and followed by size reduction of lower seam coals in search of better liberation , the coal fines are increasing by leaps and bounds. The processes used for washing coking coal is Jigs, Heavy medium bath and Cyclones for the sizes upto 0.5mm, while the coal fines are washed in spirals and conventional flotation cells."

The paper describes the making of pig iron from the Mayari iron ores of Cuba. The outstanding feature f this pig iron is a considerable content f nickel and chromium. As a marked improvement in the quality of castings has been noted when this iron is used in the foundry mixtures, a series f melting tests f mixtures of great variety of composition was conducted with the idea f getting comparative strengths from which the effect of nickel¬chromium could be seen. These tests, on account of their number, and degree of accuracy desired, were made by the crucible melting method. The paper gives the tables of results, a series f curves showing the inter-relation of the elements involved, and a summary of the conclusions derived. THE presence of nickel-chromium in pig iron made from Cuban ores is so well known that the word "Mayan" is unconsciously associated with it. Since 1904, when exploration of the Mayari deposits of iron ore in northeastern Cuba was undertaken, there has been increasing interest in these ores. The TRANSACTIONS contain numerous references to them. This iron ore, which is shipped to the. United States in the nodulized state, has been thoroughly tested and found very valuable; the deposit covers over 25,000 acres and there is in sight over 500,000,000 tons of ore that, by systematic mining, runs practically constant in composition. With nickel and chromium present, also titanium in sufficient quantities to attract attention, as well as extremely low phosphorus and sulfur contents, the iron founder is naturally interested in the utilization of Mayari ore for pig iron for the better grades of finished iron products. In the cast condition, they showed a cored structure, as indicated by the micrographs of Figs. I to 3. The etching reagent used was a mixture of 2 grams K2Cr207, 8 C.C. H2S04, and IOO C.C. H20. The cored structure is unsatisfactory for the type of corrosion resistance required for bearing applications, and homogenizing experiments were carried out at various temperatures, the results of which are shown in Figs. 4 through 8. The alloys with a lower thallium concentration, which were heated for 2 hr. at 525°C show an almost completely homogenized solid solution type of structure. With higher thallium concentration, the homogenizing temperature was dropped to 475OC. to eliminate the formation of a liquid phase. It is evident that heating for 2 hr. at this temperature did not iesiilt iii complete elimination of the cored structure. As would be expected, cold-working of the cast structure is an expedient in establishing equilibrium conditions. The fine homogeneous grain structure shown in Fig. 7 corresponds to the cold-worked area under the Rockwell ball penetration when the hardness was taken before heat-treatment. Hydrometallurgical processes, i.e., Cu extraction from a mineral concentrate and Zn electrowinning, are coupled in a battery-like system. A naturally-sourced CuFeS2 concentrate mixed with activated carbon is used as a positive slurry electrode separated by a membrane from the negative compartment. The Zn is deposited on the negative Al current collector from the circulating solution containing 100 g L–1 Zn2+ in 0.2 M H2SO4. In this battery-like system, both CuFeS2 oxidation and Zn deposition are possible during the charging cycle. The additional benefit of this setup is the energy storage if discharged by re-dissolving the Zn in the negative compartment. Cyclic charge/discharge testing revealed oxidation of the mineral concentrate supported by the Zn2+/Zn redox reaction. The coulombic and energy efficiencies increased monotonically to 95.6% and 43%, respectively, with approximately 7% Cu extraction during the first 10 charge/discharge cycles (completed in 2.4 hours). The discharge energy density also increased from 2.7 to 36.2 mWh L–1. In the following 90 cycles, the low energy (~14%) and coulombic (~33%) efficiencies that were obtained confirmed the progress of irreversible reactions e.g. Cu extraction from the mineral concentrate. Overall, approximately 16% Cu was extracted from the mineral concentrate over 100 charge/discharge cycles (or about 12.2 hours). INTRODUCTION Chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) is the main economic copper-bearing mineral, which is generally processed through pyro-metallurgical methods to produce Cu. However, environmental challenges with smelting, depletion of high-grade ores and a large number of impurities (some toxic) have resulted in continued research aimed at the development of hydrometallurgical technologies to process CuFeS2. There are a number of different proposed hydrometallurgical routes in the literature to treat CuFeS2 concentrates, but only a few have attained commercial acceptance (Dreisinger, 2006). Zn is another commercially important metal that is mainly produced via acid leaching of roasted sphalerite (ZnS). The pregnant leach solution is rigorously purified to remove all the soluble metal impurities, particularly those that are electrochemically more noble than Zn and present large kinetic activity towards H2 evolution (Hu & Piron, 1992; Mackinnon, Brannen, & Fenn, 1987; Mureşan, Maurin, Oniciu, & Gaga, 1996). Metal impurities such as Cu, Co, Ni, Cd, Pb, Sb, As, Ge and Fe etc., if they exist in the leach liquor beyond the tolerance limits, can decrease the current efficiency during electrowinning and deteriorate the deposit quality (Alfantazi & Dreisinger, 2001). A complete flow sheet, describing the process steps of Zn metal production from mine site to pure metal is presented elsewhere (Brown, Meisenhelder, & Yao, 1983).

"A high iron content manganese ore was reduced at 900~1200°C and followed by a magnetic separation process. SEM and EDS analyzes were employed to examine the transformation of microstructure and phase in reduced sample and the mechanism was revealed. Results showed that elements enriched during reduction. Iron existed in the metal iron phase and most of oxygen formed compound with manganese. Consequently a clear distinguish between iron phase and manganese minerals formed, which was beneficial to the separation of iron and manganese. But the iron phase can not be monomer dissociation in grinding process and manganese compounds turned into magnetic product as package and mechanic inclusion due to the isomorphism of iron and manganese and the small particle size. And MnO could be found partially in iron phase, which hindered the further separation of manganese and iron.IntroductionManganese is widely used in industry. The amount of manganese used in steel industry is very huge and 90% manganese is used in steel industry. Manganese ore resources are rich in China, yet with fewer rich ore but more low-grade ore which accounts for 93.6% and fine refractory ore. The constitution of the ore is very complex and more than 73% of all the manganese ore contains iron[l,2]. With the increasing of consumption of steel, the demand for manganese is becoming larger and larger and the imported ore accounts for more than 50%. Therefore, how to use the manganese ore efficiently has very significant meaning. The main method is manganese residual, which is simple and stable. However, the development of the method is limited by the quality of manganese ore, the huge amount of manganese residual, the technology of blast furnace process and economics[3,4]. Chemical benefication which may pollute environment and is difficult to recover iron is still being researched[5,6]. The paper investigated the process in which anthracite coal was the reducing agent for coal-based direct reduction and magnetic separation of the ore, and SEM with EDS measurements were employed to examine the transformation of phase in reduced sample and the mechanism was revealed[7,8]."

Water is the mainstay for beneficiation of fine size coal and minerals; however, it is also the least desirable constituent in the final product. The basic concept of the novel process described in this paper is based on the differential surface heat conduction/ absorption capacity of individual particles, which differs for different species of minerals. When a mixture of fine material is exposed to a radiant energy source, the various solids present in the mixture will absorb heat energy depending on their heat-conducting properties and there will be a difference in the surface temperature of the particles. When this differentially heated solid mixture is placed on a moving belt, which is coated with a low temperature melting resin, the hotter component of the mixture will stick to the belt and relatively cooler particles will stay free on the belt and fall off at the end of the belt run. Experiments were conducted with pyrite, coal, and quartz of 6 × 18 mesh particle size. The goal of the test program was to find the optimum conditions at which there exists a required temperature difference between minerals and coal particles by controlling the operating system variables. Preliminary tests results showed that there is a potential for separating mineral matter from coal using the thermo-adhesive separation technique.

By streaming potential techniques, the zeta potential of quartz has been measured as a function of the concentration of dodecylammonium salts at different pH values. These experiments indicate that adsorption of dodecylammonium ions takes place as individual aminium ions until a certain critical concentration is reached in the double layer, at which point the adsorbed collector ions begin to associate into patches of ions, called hemimicelles. Because of its effect on the surface potential of quartz, pH controls the adsorption of dodecylummonium ions. The value of cooperating agents and nonionized constituents of flotation systems is discussed. Previous investigation of the role of pH in the flotation of quartz with anionic collectors is here extended to an inquiry of how the cationic collector, dodecylammonium acetate, is adsorbed at the quartz-solution interface. The equilibrium amount of this collector adsorbed by quartz has already been measured as a function of concentration and pH. The weight of prior evidence has suggested that two mechanisms are involved in the adsorption of this collector by quartz, but with existing adsorption measurements alone it is not

In this investigation, TiH2 powders were coated with copper and nickel by electroless plating to delay hydrogen evolution. Copper-coated samples were found to have a mixed acicular (2D growth) and cauliflower (3D growth) morphology whereas the nickel-coated samples had a cauliflower morphology. Examinations of the coated powder cross-sections revealed that the coating thickness ranges from 0.2 µm to 4 µm. Uncoated areas on the powder surface and coating flakes unattached to TiH2 particles suggest poor adhesion between the coating and the substrate. The phase transformation undergone by the TiH2 during dehydrogenation was studied in samples taken at intermediary points in the heating cycles and examined by XRD. The findings reveal that as the powder is heated from room temperature to 800°C, it changes from TiH1.971 to Tiu and to aTi. Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) was performed to study the effects of the coatings on the temperature of hydrogen release. It was found that increasing the number of plating iterations, and therefore the thickness of the coating, creates a significant shift in the temperature of gas release.

The approach to risk management during the procurement of major projects often has a significant outcome on the ultimate delivery of a project. The NZ$1.4 B Waterview Connection project is the largest and most complex project yet undertaken by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) and the procurement process for an alliance contract was refined to provide compliance with the International Tunnel Insurance Group (ITIG) Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works (TCoP). The principle of shared risk within an alliance incentivises a common understanding of project risks prior to finalising the alliance agreement and therefore enables superior risk management through design, construction and beyond. Risk management practices need to be instigated well in advance of commercial phases, so that commercial competition does not lead to a significant elevation of project risk. In particular the practice of gaining commercial advantage by taking on a potentially unmanageable level of risk is one of the outcomes to be avoided by the TCoP.During the procurement phase the NZTA placed high value on design and construction mitigation measures proposed in order to address ground risks, as is appropriate for a major tunnel project. In order to achieve alignment on the level of geotechnical risks an Alliance Geotechnical Baseline Report (AGBR) process was developed.This paper describes the measures taken during the procurement process to achieve certainty with respect to outcomes and minimise project risks whilst also achieving value for money. Research was conducted to develop operating techniques and define some of the limiting parameters for microbially converting hydrous calcium sulfate to hydrogen sulfide. The work was carried out in either glass stoppered flasks or anaerobic fermentors. Using the criteria of pH, temperature, number of bacteria per milliliter of test solution, and hydrogen sulfide produced, it was shown that hydrous calcium sulfate could be microbially converted to hydrogen sulfide at a rate of 7.3 g H2S/1 of fermentor volume per 24 hours. The various parameters defined were pH, temperature, and medium exchange rate. These were shown to be a pH range of 7.2 to 8.8, a temperature range of 30° to 35° C, and a medium exchange rate of 70 percent of the ferment or volume per 24 hours. It was also shown that a daily waste was between 50 and 77 percent as effective as sodium lactate in supporting the production of hydrogen sulfide and that by utilizing a gas to purge the fermentation system, a 1.7-fold increase in hydrogen sulfide was obtained.

This study evaluated the use of regionally produced coal combustion products to neutralize and remove metals from acid mine drainage (AMD). Synthetic AMD mixtures were treated with a number of fly ashes and fluidized bed combustion (FBC) ashes. All of the ashes reduced the volume of the sludge produced and gave a faster settling rate than the sludge produced by treatment with lime. Faster settling allows greater throughput rates. In addition, the FBC ashes, which generally contain alkaline components used for sulfur capture, completely neutralized the acidity and, if desired, raised the pH above 10. The fly ashes, on the other hand, reduced the final volume of sludge but required additional neutralizing agents to attain a pH >5. The pH of the AMD can be taken to above 10 to insure complete removal of manganese, or it can be taken to a more neutral pH of 7 or 8 to allow for the safe introduction of the aqueous phase into ponds or streams. The process combines two industrial waste products to reduce the disposal volume of one of the waste products and to produce an environmentally safe aqueous discharge.

In 2015, 40 longwall mines provided nearly 60 percent of U.S. underground coal production. During this time, about 80 percent of ground-fall-related fatalities occurred in areas where the mine roof was supported. In an attempt to better understand the status quo of current longwall support practices in the United States, during a period between 2010 and 2017, researchers from the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) visited a sample of 25 longwall mines representing nearly 50 percent of the currently active longwall mines operating in all of the major U.S. longwall producing regions. The data presented here indicate that the types and amount of roof support being installed in modern U.S. longwall mines have reduced ground-fall accident and injury rates to levels never seen before. However, the complete elimination of unintended roof falls in U.S. longwall mines has remained elusive. The data in this paper can be used by mine operators and engineers to determine where their chosen type and density of roof support occur on the spectrum of observations contained in this database. Additionally, this data can be used to enhance, supplement and support additional research on longwall gateroad support systems.

Water consumption reduction in pellet feed operation is of paramount importance. Compared with traditional ball mills, high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) play an important role in Blaine surface area (BSA) generation to improve agglomeration properties, although stability is still a challenge. Grindability improvement of existing operation has a direct impact on the performance of the filtering and pelletizing operation. The results of this study, as a pregrinding operation, can be applied not only in new operations but also in existing ones, helping the operator control process variation in a more effective way while ore hardness increases.

The nature of fracture in unnotched tensile and notched tensile sheet and round specimens and V -notched and precracked Charpy-type sheet specimens of both wrought stress -relieved and re-crystallized molybdenum was investigated over the temperature range of -78° to 300°C. The sharp rise in fracture stress, for unnotched tensile samples, as the temperature is increased above the brittleness transition temperature (Tb), is found to be a result of an increase in flow stress due to plastic constraint and an increased strain rate which results from the onset of necking at Tb . Quasi-brittle fracture in notched tensile samples is found to occur when the tensile stress at the elastic-plastic interface, beneath the root of the notch, reaches a maximum critical value, which is independent of test temperature over the range from —78° to 25°C, but dependent on microstructure. In the temperature range between 150° and 300°C, unnotched tensile and notched tensile samples alike are found to fracture by a ductile fibrous tearing process which is discontinuous in nature, as a result of the competition between the processes of tearing, through continued plastic flow, and local work hardening. Results from the V-notched and fatigue-cracked Charpy-type impact tests demonstrate that crack initiation is the governing factor in the low-temperature (-78° to 25°C) fracture process for molybdenum. In recent years, there has been considerable interest, and a commensurate number of investigations, concerning the duc tile-to-brittle transition in refractory metals. There has not developed, however, a satisfactory explanation for the uniaxial tensile fracture-stress transition which accompanies the well-known ductility transition. This matter therefore warranted investigation. In a similar manner, the increased importance of notched tensile strength values in evaluating materials and in design criteria requires a better understanding of the factors which control the fracture behavior of notched tensile samples. In a previous investigation1 of the nature of initial yielding and fracture in notched sheet molybdenum at room temperature, it was suggested that plastic constraint was the controlling factor in governing the fracture behavior of notched samples. The final portion of this investigation was concerned with the fracture toughness of molybdenum. Of particular interest was the comparison of effective surface energies for fracture in V-notched samples with fatigue-cracked, Charpy-type samples in order to ascertain the relative importance of the initiation and propagation phases of the fracture process. MATERIALS AND TEST PROCEDURE Sheet tensile, notched tensile, and V-notched Charpy specimens were prepared from 50-mil, stress-relieved molybdenum sheet.* Half of these specimens were vacuum-annealed for 1 hr at 1200°C and 7.5 x l0-5 Torr and furnace-cooled to produce a relatively uniform grain size of 0.30 mm diameter. Round notched and unnotched tensile specimens were prepared from warm-rolled and swaged 5/8-in.-diam bar.* These specimens were vacuum-annealed for 1 hr at 1350°C and 5 x lom5 Torr and furnace-cooled to produce a grain diameter of 0.11 mm. Material analyses in ppm were: C N O H Sheet 290 10 4 1 Bar 50 30 30 2 The unnotched tensile sheet specimens had a 1/4-in. gage width and a 1-in. gage length. The unnotched tensile round specimens had a 9/32-in. gage diameter and a 1-1/4-in. gage length. The sheet and round notch tensile specimens are shown in Fig. 1. All of the notched tensile specimens tested were tandem-notched in order to study the location and mode of fracture initiation. The tandem-notched specimens were carefully machined so that the largest variation in notch depth on a single specimen was 0.001 in. Thus, when fracture occurs, the extent of plastic deformation that exists in the un-fractured notch section is that which exists just prior to fracture. All of the tandem-notched sheet specimens were electrolytic ally polished and chemically etched prior to testing. The V-notched Charpy-type specimens machined from the 50-mil sheet material had the standard dimensions of 2.125 in. long, 0.394 in. deep, and a 0.010-in. root radius. Pressure losses in mine ventilation systems are estimated using friction factors and shock loss factors. The efficient planning and designing ofmine ventilation systems depend on the accuracy of the friction factors as well as the shock loss factors that are taken into consideration. While there is a much more acceptable knowledge of what constitutes friction loss in mine roadways, the shock loss factors are in general readily not available for all possible contexts of flow separation phenomena in mines. One such special case of shock loss in mines is the train of mine cars in the airway. Mine cars are widely used for the transportation of material, and the information on shock loss factor for mine cars is limited. This paper examines the pressure loss occurring due to a train of mine cars in an airway using scale model studies and numerical investigations. Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) studies are conducted using four different turbulence models. The performance of different turbulence models is analyzed by comparing it with the experimental results. The study suggests that the boundary layer resolution method is significant in the simulation of shock loss. From the study, it is found that the shock loss factors from presently available model overestimate the pressure loss by 7 to 15 times. A better prediction model for the shock loss factor of a train of mine cars in the airway is proposed using the experimental results.

Tri-calcium aluminate (TCA) is a dominant alkaline component of the red mud residue from the Bayer process. A method being considered for industrial implementation partially neutralizes the residue by contacting it with gaseous CO2. This paper outlines the chemistry of CO2neutralisation of TCA under conditions relevant to the treatment of Bayer residue. CO2 neutralisation of the liquor is fast. It results in the formation of amorphous aluminium hydroxide and dawsonite that agglomerate together. Neutralisation of solid TCA is slower and leads to the formation of calcite, dawsonite and amorphous aluminium hydroxide. The dissolution of TCA in partially neutralised slurries causes pH reversion. However the carbonated solutions contain a store of bicarbonate that can supply aqueous carbon dioxide to complete the transformation. The pH at which the carbonation is carried out will affect the degree of TCA transformation during the carbonation process. In particular, if the pH of the carbonation is too low (near 7.0), calcite precipitation is inhibited and the degree of transformation is low. Controlling the carbonation pH helps to optimise the neutralisation process.

Regional characteristics in the coal resource base have resulted in application of different mining methods across Canada. Longwall methods predominate in eastern Canada, whereas open pit, hydraulic and room-and-pillar methods are utilized in the west. Both provincial and federal agencies have regulatory responsibilities and both also share in the development of R&D programs. This paper outlines the scale and scope of the various agencies involved with health and safety R&D in our expanding coal mining industry. Specific R&D activities in ventilation, dust control, explosion hazards, tunnel boring, strata control and truck braking, which form part of the national program, are outlined.
