NKK has developed a new cold bonded pellet process. The features of this process are; 1) it is a continuous process with 10 hours curing. 2) Products can be used as materials for various metallurgical furnaces. 3) Various kinds of slag are used as binders if necessary. 4) The quality of products is excellent. The pilot plant completed in 1981 is now being successfully operated. We are also constructing a commercial plant at our Niigata works. We produced cold pellets containing carbon as material for ferroalloys (Si-Mn), by pilot plant and used them in furnaces. Consequently, considerable economic advantages were obtained.

The particle size distribution of ground minerals is of decisive importance for downstream processes like floatation, separation, drying or others. In order to optimize the process efficiency on one hand and the final product quality on the other hand an early control of the grinding or classification stage is essential. The ultrasound based particle size analyser OPUS is capable of performing on-line particle size distribution (PSD) and solid content measurement of mineral slurries such as iron ore, copper ore, fluorspar, or quartz sand and alumina directly in heavy and rough process environment. The instrument provides a PSD of 31 size classes and can be applied for particles from nanometer range up to several millimetres. Arbitrary interpolations in between the 31 measured points are available. Typical residue values show an excellent agreement to off-line particle size analysis methods such as e.g. sieve analyses or laser diffraction. OPUS is designed as rugged in-line probe made from stainless steel. The applied technique is independent of product flow dynamics, contamination, optical properties, vibrations, pressures or changes in solid concentrations. The instrument provides all data on the system?s PC or on the process control system by a variety of interfaces.

Mine tailings, the byproduct of mining and mineral processing, are increasingly mass produced as a result of increased demand for metals and minerals as well as the advancement in technology that allows for the exploitation of lower-grade ores. Lower grades can increase the volume of tailings that may contain new gangue minerals that should be evaluated for the presence of critical minerals and other valuable metals. The practice of reprocessing, while relatively new, is crucial to reducing environmental damages, obtaining valuable critical minerals from waste, and contributing to more sustainable repurposing and disposal methods. With the increase in tailings dam failures in recent years, there is a large motivating factor in remining and removing the potential hazard to benefit the safety of potentially impacted communities. In analyzing the perspectives of various domestic and international studies, this literature review will determine the feasibility of reprocessing and reutilizing mine tailings waste for a more sustainable future while exploring current practices that have benefitted ecosystems and communities.

The heats of combustion of three chromium carbides, Cr23C6, Cr7C3, and Cr3C2, were determined by combustion calorimetry. Heats of formation calculated from the results follow: ?Hf°298 (Cr23C6) = -94.7 ± 5.0 kcal/mole, ?Hf°298 (Cr7C3) = -43.3 ± 1.7 kcal/mole, and ?Hf°298 (Cr3C2) = -22.5 ± 0.8 kcal/mole.

In the last 4 years, the high price of silver attracted more interest for improving its extraction. Metallic silver and silver minerals require a high concentration of cyanide and show slow leaching rates and poor extraction. This investigation determined the effects of dissolved oxygen, lead nitrate and a pretreatment on silver leaching from slurry containing quartz mixed with metallic silver and high purity acanthite. Stephanite, pyrargyrite and polybasite were also used in the study. The silver minerals were characterized by chemical assay, X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), image analysis (MP-SEM-IPS) and electron microprobe analysis (EMPA). Increased dissolved oxygen of the slurry produced the fastest silver leaching kinetics. The leaching of silver from high purity acanthite was determined under various conditions and compared to a new process called ?CANMET Enhanced Leaching Process (CELP). For a slurry containing acanthite, a 23% improvement (from 76% to 99%) in silver extraction was obtained with the CELP. In presence of pyrargyrite and polybasite, silver extraction increased from 75% to 90% and 86% to 99% respectively using the CELP. No improvement was obtained for the slurry with stephanite (99% extraction in 72 hours). However, the sliver leaching rate was much faster with the CELP. XPS analysis of individual silver mineral particles showed that CELP leached surfaces were considerably more oxidized relative to the conventional cyanidation leached surfaces. Leaching of two gold/silver ores indicated that the efficiency of the CELP increased with the refractoriness of the sample. Gold extractions were comparable for the two technologies while silver extraction improved up to 5% (70g/t) for the CELP. The final leach solutions contained lower concentrations of copper, which consequently reduces the effluent treatment costs.

THE relation of annealing temperature to conductivity of copper wire has been determined. Conductivity hard was 98.26 per cent. After a 10-min. heating at 200°C. it was 98.69. By annealing 10 min. at 300° C. a large increase, to 100.93, occurred. Maximum conductivity, 101.15, was attained after a 500° C. anneal; thereafter it decreased to 100.53 after a 950° C. anneal. If copper is gassed the decrease is much more than this. Materials and Methods The work was done on high grade electrolytic copper, 99.942 per cent. copper plus silver, silver 0.0008 per cent. It was hot-rolled to >/4 in., then cold drawn to 0.080 in. The wire was cut into 25 5-ft. lengths and numbered 1 to 25 as cut. Four samples were tested hard. The others were wound into 5-in. diameter coils. For the 100° C. heating a coil was put into water, the water brought to boiling, and the wire kept at this temperature for 10 min. For the higher temperatures the coils were placed in envelopes of sheet copper, a little water added, and the envelopes sealed by folding over the edges twice, and hammering them together. This kept the air out very well. The envelope and wire 'were brought to the desired temperature; this was maintained for 10 min., then the whole was water-quenched.

During 1959-61, the Bureau of Mines investigated the strain and deformation induced in rock and concrete linings around mine openings by retreat panel caving at the Climax Molybdenum mine. Two concrete-lined slusher drifts on the Phillipson level of the mine were instrumented with both electrical strain gages and extensometers. Changes in strain and deformation were recorded over an 18-month period during the undercutting and caving of the mining panel. General agreement was found between the strain and deformation measurements and the hypothesis that the vertical component of the stress field on the openings is almost completely removed by undercutting. This phenomenon is a possible explanation for the structural failures that occur in the slusher drifts during the undercutting cycle.

The solvent extraction for gold from alkaline cyanide solutions has been investigated using LIX 79 guanidine-based extractant. Different variables that could affect the extraction system were evaluated: equilibrium time, aqueous pH and extractant and modifier concentrations. The extraction isotherms of the aurocyanide complex with respect to other cyanoanions were compared and the following order of selectivity Au>Ag>Cu>Zn>>Fe was observed. From the pH isotherms it was found that aurocyanide can be extracted in alkaline media and a better separation with respect to other cyanoaniones was obtained in the range of 10.5 < pH < 11.2. Better selectivity was observed when using LIX 79 and tridecanol at 10% and 5% vol, respectively. Stripping gold from loaded organic was carried out at pH>12, using NaOH and NaCN solutions.

Granitic Pegmatite deposits are the chief source of commercial feldspar, micas, lithium minerals, tantalum-columbium, beryl, and certain types of kaolin. The output from pegmatite mines in the United States is small compared to other mineral products in terms of bulk or value, and much of it comprises only minor metals and nonmetals. Nevertheless, pegmatite minerals play a vital part in our domestic industrial economy, particularly in the ceramic and electrical industries. Numerous special purpose uses also are important, even though they require small quantities of raw materials. In recent years, realizing the potential importance of the pegmatite minerals, the U.S. Geological Survey, the United States Bureau of Mines, several state Bureaus of Mines, and a few private companies have carried on extensive programs of pegmatite studies in the New England and southeastern states, in the Black Hills area of South Dakota, in the Rocky Mountain region of Wyoming, Colorado, and New Mexico, and in various parts of Washington, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and California. Currently, some of the pegmatite minerals such as micas and spodumene are selectively separated by the flotation process. To a lesser extent a few plants are selectively floating feldspar and quartz. Much of the credit for the above progress goes to the fine work done by U.S. Bureau of Mines (1), and companies such as Foote Minerals (2). Additional research efforts by the New Mexico Bureau of Mines (3) has successfully demonstrated selective separation of micas, beryl, spodumene, lepidolite, microlite, quartz and feldspar from a complex Pegmatite containing all these minerals. Since the nature of the mineralization of various valuable components of a pegmatite deposit is such that selective separation of some of these can be carried out at a coarse size using the Heavy Media Separation technique, it was felt that such a system should be investigated for selective preconcentration of their minerals. It was also felt that of all the :MS systems available, the DYNA WHIRLPOOL (DWP) device which allows a close control and adjustment of specific gravity should provide a means of achieving the above goal. Once the desired preconcentration of one or more of the pegmatite mineral assemblage is achieved, the available selective flotation techniques should provide effective recovery of various minerals into marketable products. This paper presents technical and economic aspects of selective preconcentration of some of the pegmatite minerals followed by selective flotation to produce marketable products.

"Aluminum has the disadvantage of low strength. In order to obtain the high strength composites, crystals were refined in the composites. Grain refinement was approached at two process points, generating new grains and grain growth. It is important for refinement how to control the grain growth. Spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique and TiB2powder addition prevent grain growth. To investigate effects of strain and additives to the alloy, aluminum powder was sintered at 70 MPa and 80 MPa, changing the content of TiB2additive powder by SPS method. As the results, the crystal grain size was finer in the composite sintered at higher sintering pressure and with larger amount of additive, though over 1.0mass% TiB2addition dissuades grain refining. These grain refinements improve hardness and tensile strength of sintered aluminum alloys.INTRODUCTIONAluminum matrix composites have low density, high specific strength, and low cost. Their applications are growing continuously in the field of automotive and aerospace industries. Recent studies to improve their good mechanical and tribological properties use different ceramic materials such as Al2O3(Das, Munroe, & Bandyopadhyay, 1996; Ashwatha & Anthony Xaviorb, 2014),SiC(Hassani, Bagherpour, & Qods, 2014), B4C(Ehsan, Masoud, Touradj, Amir Hossein, & Ali, 2015),TiC(Ehsan, Ali, Masoud, Kamyar, & Touradj, 2017), and TiB2(Fei & Zhong-Hua, 2013).On the other hand, grain refinement is also an important techniques for improving the properties of aluminum alloys. Finer grains improve the mechanical properties of the alloy. For cast and wrought alloys, addition of grain refiners in molten alloys accelerates generation of nucleus and suppresses grain growth. Al-Ti-B alloy is generally added as grain refiners in the molten aluminum alloys(Easton & Stjohn, 2001). Especially, TiB2has very high melting point, low density, and excellent hardness. Therefore, TiB2was selected as additions into aluminum alloys. Liquids reaction leads to high cost, oxidation, discoloration of molten alloy, and clustering of additive powder as compared with solid reaction such as sintering. However, sintering of aluminum alloy powder with ceramic powders is difficult for oxide layer surface. Recently, we take attention to spark plasma sintering (SPS) as advanced sintering process. SPS process can easily sinter a high quality specimen at a lower sintering temperature and in a shorter time than conventional sintering processes. By SPS process, we have sintered titanium powders that are as difficult to be sintered by any other processes as aluminum powders, and improved mechanical properties by adding hard ceramic powders TiC and TiB(Kamegawa, Izui, Komiya, Kobayashi, & Arimoto, 2015; Sampei, Izui, Komiya, Shigimura, & Suzuki, 2015). Furthermore, it is important to consider not only pure aluminum but alloys for solid-solution or precipitation strengthening. Actually, pure Al does not have enough strength compared with the alloys. Al-Cu alloy and Al-Mg alloy demonstrate adequate strength for industrial and commercial sectors. Al-Mg alloy retains good formability, and has high resistance to corrosion. It is therefore used for many applications. We must consider alloying processes. The most cost effective process is blended elemental technology where alloying elements are added to base powder as elemental or master alloy powder (Smugeresky & Dawson, 1981; Yasue, Radjai, Miwa, & Sakaguchi, 2003; Bolzoni, Esteban, Ruiz-Navas, & Gordo, 2012)."

"The Lonmin Base Metal Refinery treats converter matte from the Lonmin Smelter to produce nickel sulphate crystals, copper cathode as well as a concentrate containing the platinum group (PGM) metals. The original process employed a Sherritt design and utilizes atmospheric and pressure leaches for the dissolution of base metals. This paper describes the original flow sheet and the improvements made to enhance PGM recoveries, product quality and to increase capacity. Changes include the introduction of flash recycle cooling on the autoclave, batch leaches to improve the quality of the PGM concentrate and the implementation of solid-liquid separation with centrifuges. INTRODUCTIONThe Lonmin Base Metal Refinery (BMR) is about 100 km north-west of Johannesburg and treats converter matte from the Lonmin Smelter to produce nickel sulphate crystals, copper cathode and a concentrate containing the PGMs. The plant was commissioned in 1985 based on a Sherritt design to treat 12 tonnes converter matte per day. The original flow sheet consists of a milling circuit, an atmospheric leach and a pressure leach to produce a PGM concentrate which is despatched by helicopter to the Lonmin Platinum refinery in Brakpan, about 40 km east of Johannesburg. The liquor from the atmospheric leach is treated by crystallization to produce a nickel sulphate hexa-hydrate crystal. The leach liquor from the pressure leach is treated by a selenium removal step followed by electro-winning to produce copper cathode. The spent solution from the copper electro-winning is recycled to both the atmospheric and pressure leach steps to provide sulphuric acid for the leaching reactions.Modifications were made to the original circuit to increase the plant capacity, to improve the PGM recoveries and to improve the quality of the PGM concentrate. Capacity increases included all the unit operations, new mill, new first stage, additional autoclaves, additional nickel sulphate crystallizers, new copper electro-winning and new batch leach reactors for upgrading the PGM concentrate. The current circuit is described in this paper and not the detailed history of each plant change."

Steelmaking slag is a by-product in considerable volume and a valuable material for various applications. In general, steelmaking slag is an alkaline compound of CaO, Fe2O3, and SiO2. However, its characteristics varies depending on the feedstocks, steelmaking process and cooling method of the slag. To utilize this by-product effectively, this study investigated the characteristics of steelmaking slags taken from Wuhan Iron & Steel Co. Ltd. The results showed that the slags mainly consist of the oxides of calcium, iron, and silicon, with low contents of magnesia, alumina, and manganese oxide with a feature of high alkalinity and lime saturation factor. The major mineral phases include belite, calcium ferrite, calcium hydroxide, wustite, quartz, and small amount of elite. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated the weight loss from ambient temperature to 800 °C is 8% in total. Melting test showed the glass transition temperature is between 1300 and 1350 °C, flow temperature is about 1400 °C. The slag samples investigated in this study can be considered as a typical glass-ceramic composite.

"Development of a process for the treatment of a nickel copper matte rich in the minerals heazlewoodite, chalcocite and bornite has demonstrated significant base metal recoveries and metal separation efficiencies. The determination of chemical and mineralogical changes occurring in the individual leaching stages in laboratory experiments has enabled a better understanding of the complex leaching chemistry. The chemistry and mineralogy of the piloting and laboratory processes are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe nickel-copper sulfide ores of the South African Bushveld Complex are among the most important Platinum Group Metal (PGM) bearing ores, and contain the world’s largest reserves of platinum. The treatment used in the recovery of PGMs from these ores includes three types of processes, namely ore concentration using physical techniques such as flotation and gravity separation, concentration by pyrometallurgical means, hydrometallurgical extraction of the base metals followed by the PGMs. Following milling of the ore, flotation involves the separation of high value minerals from gangue by taking advantage of the differences in their hydrophobicity. These differences are generally maximized through the use of a surfactant or wetting agent. Concentrates are then thermally treated and melted which brings about physical and chemical changes that enable the recovery of base metals and PGMs. The main aim of the smelting and converting process is to separate and eliminate the valuable metals from the bulk of the unwanted gangue and essentially all of the iron and to concentrate the metal VALUES (into a high grade converter matte. The matte can be further enriched by magnetic separation, producing a PGM-rich magnetic fraction and a base metal-rich non-magnetic fraction. The magnetic fraction is treated by hydrometallurgical processes to produce a PGM concentrate which is further refined to separate and purify the individual metals. The non-magnetic fraction is treated to produce marketable metal VALUES (such as nickel, copper, cobalt and to a lesser extent PGMs. The principal objective of any hydrometallurgical extractive process is to leach the desired elements selectively into an aqueous phase so as to separate them from the bulk of the material. An improved methodology is presented for assessing the economic feasibility and effectiveness of recycling industrial waste. The methodology is based on the break-even control mechanism, but at the same time provides for the introduction of new evaluation criteria such as the threshold of conditionality and the degree of ore substitution. Based on an improved analysis, it becomes possible to more precisely predict recycling efficiency. A more refined determination of the lower limit of concentration of recoverable metals, at which technogenic waste can be assigned the status of secondary raw materials and processed profitably, leads to a significant expansion of the secondary raw material base suitable for recycling. The potential for recycling manganese-containing dust from the production of ferrosilicomanganese, dehydrated sludge from the hydro separation of slags, and cake from the production of electrolytic manganese dioxide at the Chiatura mining enterprise is used as an example. It is shown that with a threshold of –24% Mn content, the highest recycling efficiency can be achieved by the production of low-phosphorus manganese slag and conversion to ferrosilicomanganese using the above waste to replace 40-60% grade III and IV manganese concentrates in the feed.

An albitization granite type tantalum-niobium ore from Jiangxi Province, China was taken as the research object in this paper. The main valuable minerals in this ore are tantalite-columbite and uranmicrolite, and the minerals that can be comprehensively recovered include cassiterite, sulfide minerals, topaz, zinnwaldite, and quartz-feldspar. Based on the research results of process mineralogy, the roughing process of gravity separation for coarse particles combined with flotation for fine particles is proposed. The combined cleaning process of flotation-gravity-magnetic-electric-hydrometallurgical separation is adopted for the rough concentrate of gravity separation while the combined cleaning process of gravity-flotation- hydrometallurgical separation is adopted for the rough concentrate of flotation. High intensity magnetic separation is used to separate and recover zinnwaldite and quartz-feldspar from gravity tailings. By mineral processing for the crude ore containing (TaNb)cassiterite concentrate is 0.0003% with a grade of Sn 63.22% and a recovery of Sn 47.42% while the yield of sulfide concentrate is 0.0783% with a grade of Pb 33.15% and Zn 27.09% which can be separated to get lead and zinc concentrate respectively. The yield of topaz concentrate is 0.1545% and the topaz mainly distributed in the size range of -0.4+0.074mm, which can be made into abrasive products of different particle sizes after classification. The yield of zinnwaldite concentrate is 16.91% with a grade of Liwhiteness of 75%, which is a glass-ceramic material of good quality. 2O5 0.0346%, Sn 0.04%, Pb 0.10% and Zn 0.33%, the tantalum-niobium concentrate with a yield of 0.00278%,a grade of (TaNb)2O5 53.61% and a recovery of (TaNb)2O5 44.49% is obtained. And the yield of 2O 1.34% and Rb2O 0.40%. The yield of quartz-feldspar concentrate is 30.42% with a grade of K2O+Na2O 8.98% and Fe2O3 0.11% and a natural All of tantalum, niobium, cassiterite, topaz, zinnwaldite, quartz, and feldspar are recovered effectively. "Oxygenated metabolites of arachidonic acid (MJ are produced by the alveolar macrophage (AM) and have been shown to mediate inflammatory reactions. We therefore assessed the production of eicosanoids by AM harvested from the lungs of rats ex· posed to a bituminous coal dust for 2 wk in an inhalation chamber in order to determine if AA metabolism was altered in a manner that may promote an inflammatory response in the lung. Exposure to coal dust resulted in a 66% increase in the number of AM harvested, an increase in thromboxane A2 (TxA;i) and leukotriene 84 (LTB,j) production to 222% and 181% of control values, respectively, and a decrease in prostaglandin E2 (PGE:i) production to '62% of control values. In AM harvested from rats allowed to breath clean air for 2 wk following coal dust exposure, PGE2 production returned to control levels but TxA2 and LTB4 production remained elevated. The TxA2 synthesis inhibitor UK 38,485 reduced TxA2 production in dust-exposed AM both immediately and 2 wk following exposure. Thus, exposure of rats to coal dust significantly alters the metabolism of AA in AM, with potentially important aspects of AA metabolism remaining altered even after a 2-wk recovery period. Based on the established role of eicosanoids in inflammatory and fibrotic processes, these results suggest that the alteration of AM eicosanoid production as a result of the inhalation of coal mine dust may be an important factor in the pathophysiology of coal workers' pneumoconiosis.The authors are grateful to Joan Greenwood and Barbara Scheetz for their excellent technical assistance and to Brenda Pavone for the preparation of the manuscript. This defensive reaction involves phagocytosis, lysosomal enzyme release, and the generation of reactive oxygen species by the AM (Snella, 1986; Rich et al., 1987). A number of agents, including phorbol esters, zymosan, adenosine diphosphate, organic hydroperoxides, and calcium ionophore, have been shown to activate the AM in vitro (Badger, 1986; Marshall and Lands, 1986; Snella, 1986). The AM response to these activators appears to be mediated in part by the oxygenated metabolites of arachidonic acid (AA) (Bertram et al., 1988; Demers et al., 1987; Mcleish et al., 1987).The AM may metabolize AA through cyclooxygenase- and lipoxygenase- catalyzed pathways to produce a variety of eicosanoids including prostaglandin (PG) E2, thromboxane (Tx) A2, leukotriene (LT) B4, LTC4, LTD4, and several hydroxyeicosatetraenoic acid derivatives (HETEs) (Willis, 1970; Camp et al., 1983; Poubelle et al., 1986). The production of these eicosanoids may enhance the. defensive ability of the challenged lung since they stimulate chemotactic cell recruitment to the site of invasion, enhance extravasation of circulating immune cells, and promote local vasodilatation. However, continued stimulation of the AM population, with the consequent production of proinflammatory eicosanoids, may ultimately enhance the disease process by contributing to chronic bronchoconstriction, fibrosis, and the persistent release of toxic oxygen species."

In 2007, a total of 2,030 coal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).1 Coal mines comprised 13.7% of all mining operations. ? Bituminous mines comprised 92.4% (n=1,875) and anthracite mines 7.6% (n=155) of coal mining operations. ? Provisional values for the heat of formation of europium trichloride and europium sesquioxide were determined by solution calorimetry utilizing europium metal of more than 99-percent purity. The resulting values for the heats of formation of Eu203 (cubic) and EuCls (hexagonal) were -386,970 ±l,200 cal/mole and -218,740 ±650 cal/mole, respectively, measured at 298.15° K.

The quantitative separation of tantalum from columbium has been obtained through several liquid-liquid extraction processes. The valuable metals are separated by selective extraction from organic feed solution using a mineral acid or by selective extraction from aqueous feed solutions employing an organic solvent. The greatest degree of separation was obtained when organic ketones, particularly methyl isobutyl ketone, were used. Approximately 200 combinations of various organic solvents and mineral acids were tested as possible separation systems in which the tantalum or columbium content was extracted from organic solutions of the anhydrous pentachlorides.
