The effect of variables on the gold extraction with ammonium thiosulfate was investigated on sponge gold and ore samples. The Effects of CUS04, (NH4hS203, NH40H, (N~hS04' pH, stirring speed and retention on gold leaching rate and thiosulfate oxidation (consumption) have been studied. Almost 100% of gold was leached from sponge gold and over 96% from ore sample at optimum conditions. Trioctylmethyl ammonium chloride was used to recover gold from thiosulfate pregnant solution. It was found that more than 99% of gold was recovered by the extractant diluted with n-octane at 01 A ratio of 1: 1 without the re-adjustment of pH or others. Also, the gold cementation was conducted without de-aeration by using zinc, copper and aluminum powders. The result indicated that the gold was effectively recovered from a solution of low ammonia and copper concentrations and higher thiosulfate concentration. The gold recovery process by using ammonium thiosulfate is an environmental friendly method comparing to conventional cyanidation process.

High-quality titanium-rich material is of significance in the development of titanium industry as it is the main raw material to produce sponge titanium and titanium white using chloride process. Activation roasting of titanium slag with high Ca and Mg contents as adding H3PO4 followed by acid leaching was investigated to prepare titanium-rich material. The effects of H3PO4 dosage, roasting temperature and time, hydrochloric acid quantity, acid leaching temperature and time on TiO2 grade and removal of impurities were studied. The results show that after the finely ground titanium slag roasted with 8% H3PO4 at 1000 for 2h, most Mg impurities in anosovite solid solution structure were converted into simple acid–soluble compounds. The impurities such as Ca and Mg obviously decreased when the hydrochloric acid concentration was 20%, leaching at 100 °C for 2h, from which a titanium-rich material containing 82.56% TiO2 and 1.15% (CaO+MgO) was obtained.

This mineralogical study is based on samples from typical "wet" nickel laterites of humid tropical to sub-tropical regions. An in-situ nickel laterite sample from Goro and a transported laterite sample from Plaine des Lacs, New Caledonia, are predominantly limonitic. Two-thirds of the particles in the Goro sample are <10 um in size; they consist of skeletal goethite and serpentine, as well as minor amounts of talc, gibbsite, chlorite, quartz and clay minerals. The coarser grains are mainly Cr-spinel, serpentine, gibbsite and Mn oxide. Nickel occurs mainly in goethite, serpentine and Mn oxide; cobalt occurs in goethite and Mn oxide. The Plaine des Lacs sample is finer-grained and contains more Al and CO3, but less Mg and Si than the Goro material. The sample contains more kaolinite, chlorite, siderite and feldspar, but less serpentine and gibbsite than the Goro material. Nickel is detected mainly in goethite, serpentine, Fe-Mg silicate and Fe-Mn oxide. The Indonesian ore from Sorowako, as sampled from the reduction kiln feed containing some reverts, is predominantly saprolitic, with apparent particle sizes ranging from <100 um to > 1 cm. The sample of reduction kiln feed is rich in Mg silicates, Mg-Fe silicates and goethite, and exhibits complex alteration textures. The nickel contents vary from particle to particle. Nickel is present mainly in serpentine, olivine, chlorite and amphibole, and in subordinate amounts in goethite and Mn oxide. Cobalt is detected in the Mn oxide. Pilot plant studies showed the technical feasibility of fluidized-bed operation for producing hydrogen and synthesis gas by the steam-iron process. A mixture of iron and iron oxide from 20-to 100-mesh was partially reduced with a simulated producer gas and then oxidized with steam and/or carbon dioxide. Results of tests show the effects of pressure, temperature, bed height, gas-to-solids ratio, type of iron oxide, and composition of gas on the gas and solids conversions during reduction and oxidation. A baffled free-fall solids system was also found operable. The short residence time of about 5 seconds limited conversion of the solids.

The application of chemical thermodynamic theory to high temperature aqueous systems is discussed as a basis for the explanation of thermal precipitation. The derivation of high temperature potential/ pH diagrams is briefly outlined in order to show a temperature/pH relationship for hydrolytic precipitation, which is an effect that is caused simply by heating an aqueous solution. Various examples of thermal precipitation are given, with particular reference to separation of metal values from leach solutions. Metal sulphate solutions are shown to precipitate basic sulphates, hydrated sulphates , oxides, hydroxides, and oxydroxides of the metal depending largely on the pH, the concentration of metal ion, and the concentration of sulphate or bisulphate. The CuS04-H2S04-H20 system is treated in some detail, and the separation of copper from other metal ions is investigated. Other separations involving Fe, Ni, Zn, Cd, and Cr are considered. Other advantages of thermal precipitation, such as the formation of high purity, large particle size and easily filterable materials, are presented. The kinetics of thermal precipitation are also briefly examined.

The performance of the grinding circuit, from the initial stages of operation to the present, is discussed. The mill efficiency as measured by the Bond grindability data and the operating work index is presented. The objective has been to produce a sand cyclone overflow containing not more than 6% +65 mesh. However, this has never been attained even at low milling rates. On the other hand, significant improvements in throughput were achieved by instituting some equipment changes and process modifications within the grinding circuit. The latest approach to solving the coarse grind problem is also discussed.

"INTRODUCTION This report on the properties of motor fuels sold through service stations in the United States is a continuation of a series of reports made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Coordinating Research (CFR) Committee of the Coordinating Research Coouncil (CRC) 4/ and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first of these reports presented data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36. 5/ Further reports were issued describing motor gasolines sold during the succeeding summers and winters to and including the summer of 1941. 5/ reports were made on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1941-42 and during the summer of 1942. However, starting with the winter of 1942-43, the semiannual reports were resumed. 5/The present report presents analytical data for samples, representing the products of approximately 100 companies. Most of the samples represented in this report were obtained during December 1)55 and January 194o. As in previous surveys, the companies covered by the survey include both large and small suppliers. Conforming to former reports, the data cover three groups of samples - regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasolines.As the number of analyses submitted for samples of third-grade gasoline are not considered adequate to represent this type of motor fuel, data for the analyses have not been averaged, but the individual items are tabulated. "A South American nickel mine has been producing a nickel concentrate that also contains copper and iron (15 percent nickel, 5 percent copper, 28 percent iron) for the end use of stainless steel production. A critical specification for the quality of the steel is the iron to magnesium oxide ratio (Fe:MgO), with a ratio of below 3.5:1 having a substantial impact on the nickel value. This nickel concentrate producer historically mined the sulfur-rich mineral pyroxenite but had been forced to move to a magnesium oxide/silicate (MgO/SiO4)-rich mineral harzburgite, resulting in nickel recovery being reduced to around 50 percent to maintain the required Fe:MgO ratio. In this study, ore mineralogy, water chemistry and the chemistries associated with the flotation process were evaluated in an effort to increase nickel recovery while maintaining the Fe:MgO ratio according to specification. New chemistry was introduced with the specific goal of complexing with the MgO and retarding its interaction with the bubble flow in the flotation process.IntroductionGlobal nickel production in 2011 totalled to 1,770,000 tons, according to the Raw Materials Group (2013). From 1950 to 2005 there was an aggregate 4.4 percent increase in nickel production, with a market-value high of $1,000/ton nickel reached in 1998 (Mudd, 2010). Approximately 65 percent of nickel production is consumed by the stainless steel industry, with 12 percent of the remainder used in super alloys or nonferrous alloys. Nickel imparts corrosion resistance, temperature resistance and other benefits to its alloys (Table 1) (Oberg, 1996; Cáceres, 2003). The dominant types of nickel-bearing ores are classified as either laterites (limonite: nickel-iron oxide; and garnierite: nickel hydrosilicate) or magmatic sulfide deposits (pentlandite: iron-nickel sulfide) (U.S. Geological Survey, 2013a, 2013b). In 2012, about 40 percent of the nickel ore mined was sulfidic-type ores and about 60 percent was laterite. The processing of laterite ore is expected to continue to increase as the availability of sulfidic ores continues to decline."

The Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) underground mine is situated adjacent to the Great Artesian Basin in North Queensland and within a fracture zone. Underground development commenced in February 2008 and has extended to approximately 1000 vertical metres below the surface.Groundwater has been encountered in numerous locations throughout the mine, predominantly on the eastern side of the orebody and often related to fault structures. Most of the groundwater encountered has been managed with conventional pumping systems; however, on occasions large water inflows have been encountered, which have had a significant impact on the planned development of the mine. Some of the intersections encountered had the potential to compromise the mine from a combination of high temperature (over 45°C), high pressure (3500 kPa) and high flows (50–100 L/s).This paper describes three case studies where significant water inflows were encountered and then controlled by the injection of cementitious grout into the rock mass. The case studies are the 1650 mid-shaft heading, the 1325 shaft access decline and the 1625 to 1475 fresh air rise (FAR) raise bore. Each case study includes a brief description of the event that occurred and the grouting equipment and techniques developed to enable mining to continue.The paper also describes the development of a hydrogeological map of the mine, the probe-hole regime used for high-risk headings and the required processes and systems to inject both cementitious grouts and polyurethane resin into the rock mass.CITATION:Purvis, T, Calverd, J and Greve, A-K, 2014. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has established a wire rope research laboratory to examine the factors that affect the life of wire rope. Two sin-diameter 6x25 fiber core (FC) ropes were degraded on a bending fatigue machine, These were the second and third ropes in a series of tests on this construction and size rope. Tensile and nondestructive tests were performed on samples of the rope to determine the relationship between rope deterioration and rope breaking strength. The tests indicated that once a wire rope nears the end of its service life, both deterioration and the consequent loss of rope strength begin to increase at an accelerated rate.

This committee drew up a form of Constitution and By-Laws, to be recommended to the general meeting to be held on the following day; and, with the exception of two alterations, this Constitution and By-Laws, formulated by the Organization Committee, were accepted as a whole by the general meeting. With the exception of a general discussion of affairs that might be brought out by means of such an institute, no further business was done at this meeting of the Organization Committee, and it was adjourned.

FOR more than 25 years modern mining has been carried on in the Island of Cyprus, Mediterranean Sea, by the Cyprus Mines Corp. of Los Angeles, Calif. The general features of these operations have been described.1 From 1935 to June 30, 1940, top slicing in the Mavrovouni mine produced in excess of 2,000,000 long tons. The rate for the last part of this period was approximately 50,000 tons per month. DESCRIPTION OF ORE BODIES The shape of the ore body now being top sliced in the Mavrovouni mine is an inclined irregular pyritic pipe or chimney of large dimensions, extending from unknown depths below the bottom level at elevation 250 ft below sea level, to the highest level at elevation 400 ft above sea level. The present surface above the ore body lies between 550 and 650 ft elevation. Undoubtedly the ore body extended to surface and was mined by the ancients by opencast and underground methods. The old pits were gradually filled up by erosion until now they show as slight depressions in the topography. The largest area of the ore body is at elevation 170 ft below sea level, where the horizontal section is almost elliptical, with a width of 600 ft and a length of 1000 ft. Below this elevation the shape of the ore body continues to be elliptical but with reduced dimensions. Above this elevation it rises flatly towards the south with a substantial depression in the upperside of the chimney and irregular ridges or wings rising on each side. It gradually grows smaller as it rises. The ore body is a pyritic replacement of andesitic extrusives which occur as flows and pillow lavas. With the exception of the upper portions of one or two small offshoots rising from the main ore body, all ore is completely surrounded by andesite. Most of the andesite lying above the ore body is covered by marl and clay sedimentaries of Miocene and later age. The Miocene is presumed to be older than the ore mineralization. That portion of the andesites which lies between the sedimentaries and the ore body has been broken by slumpage, and weathered, and iron-stained by the descending meteoric waters. It is a mass of crushed material that caves and follows downward readily as the top-slice stopes retreat. The main ore body is a heavy cupreous pyrites mass assaying on the average about 4.0 pct Cu; 48.0, S; and 42.0, Fe. In places the copper drops below 1.0 pct. On the borders of this heavy sulphide ore body lie disseminated cupreous pyrites ore deposits of large dimensions. Some portions of these appear to be closely related to the heavy sulphide ore, as the ratio of copper to pyrite is about the same. The greater part of the disseminated ore, most of which lies immediately to the east of the main ore body, contains less than 0.10 pct Cu and about 25.0 to 30.0 pct S. This probably can

This Bureau of Mines report is a study of the organizational framework of the ferrous scrap industry, of the products produced, and of the factors affecting the consumption of ferrous scrap by the steel industry. Consumption data from 27 major iron and steel firms in the States of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin during the period between 1957 to 1962 were grouped by type of iron and steel furnace production facilities to determine consumption pattern for various grades of scrap in comparison to ingot production, hot metal consumption, and home scrap generation. Grades of scrap affected by changes in scrap consumption were determined, and the pattern that emerged was analyzed. Correlation of scrap demand and its effects on scrap prices based on price of scrap receipts of No. 1 heavy melting scrap and No. 2 bundles in the Chicago area for the years 1957 through 1962 indicated that demand trends do not always affect the price of scrap, Past and present technological advancements in steelmaking processes are discussed, and their effects on the scrap industry are analyzed.

The South Deposit Tailings Storage Facility (SDTSF), located at Grange Resources Pty Ltd’s (Grange) Savage River mine in north west Tasmania, has recently begun construction. The facility will provide storage for approximately 37 million cubic metres of tailings, equating to approximately 20 years’ tailings storage.The SDTSF embankment will be constructed entirely out of waste rock won from mining operations, and will feature a flow-through drain constructed from alkaline, non-acid forming (NAF) waste rock. This provides Grange with an economical storage solution for waste management (both tailings and waste rock) and maximises available space on site. The outflows discharged through the alkaline rock ‘flow-through’ will provide a long-term source of alkalinity to Main Creek, subsequently feeding into Savage River. This will provide environmental benefits to the downstream ecology that has long been degraded due to the effects of legacy acid and metalliferous drainage (AMD), caused by historical mining operations.CITATION:Longey, R, Brett, D and Simmons, A, 2015. The highest compressive strength cement has the highest bond strength in tests in which the cement is subjected to a confining pressure. After perforating, the bond strength is reduced to nearly zero when the pipe is supported by weak cement. Perforating does not affect the bond strength, however, when the pipe is supported by strong cement. Pipe supported by weak cement is damaged by perforating with expendable capsule jets, but is not damaged by perforating with the hollow carrier gun. High strength cements are recommended for oil wells that are to be perforated. Introduction The purpose of this work is to determine the effect of jet perforating on the bonding strength of oilwell cement at simulated down-hole conditions. Bond strength is a good criterion for determining the effectiveness of cement in performing its main function, i.e., that of isolating zones. According to the literature on the subject, the optimum cement strength for perforating is low and should not exceed 2,000 psi compressive strength. This conclusion was based on the appearance of bullet and jet perforations in neat and gel cements largely done in the absence of a confining pressure more than 15 years ago. Discussion Literature A relatively weak cement has been recommended in the literature as having optimum properties for perforating. In 1947, Oliphant and Farris tested bullet perforating of neat cements at various curing times.&apos; Some of the tests were made at down-hole conditions. They reported that the optimum cement strength for perforating was about 2,000 psi compressive strength. Enlarged holes occurred when strength was too low, and the cement shattered and cracked when the strength was too high. In 1951, Morgan and Dumbauld tested bullet and jet perforating of neat and gel cements at surface conditions.&apos; They reported that optimum cement has a compressive strength less than 2,000 psi. In their tests at atmospheric pressure, high strength cement shattered and cracked when perforated. Thus, the optimum cement strength was based on the appearance of neat and gel cement after perforating. In 1953, Clark showed a relation between cement strength and fluid shutoff.&apos; He concluded that a 500 psi compressive strength is required for good fluid shutoff and that maximum bonding ability is developed at approximately 1,000 psi compressive strength. In 1964, Bell and Shore invalidated most of the conclu sions by the previous authors when they demonstrated that atmospheric pressure tests cannot be used to determine casing deformation and damage that will result from perforating under down-hole conditions.&apos; They showed that the higher the hydrostatic pressure, the more restricted will be the expansion of gases generated by the charge. Less casing deformation and damage occurs under down-hole conditions than at atmospheric pressure. In recent work, Bearden et al. reported that jet perforating at surface pressure with the hollow carrier gun caused the cement sheath to shatter and crack.&apos; The perforating, however, did not seriously affect the pressure required to leak past the casing cement bond. Only three cementing mixtures were tested, and presumably they had strengths in excess of 2.000 psi. Bearden et al. also reported that the hydraulic bonding strength increased as the compressive strength increased. Their hydraulic test showed that approximately 1,000 psi pressure is sufficient to break the casing cement bond for a well aged neat Portland cement sheath. Unfortunately, the tests were not run with a confining pressure, so Bearden et al. were merely measuring the strength of their outer 8%-in. casing. In our investigation, we measured the hydraulic bond strength of cement to pipe under a confining pressure and found that the bond strength was not limited to 1,000 psi. Cement Bond The bond strength is a good criterion for measuring the effectiveness of cement in performing its main function, that of preventing interzonal communication of fluids behind the casing. Measuring bond strength after perforating should be a good quantitative method of determining optimum cement properties, and should be a better method than that used by previous investigators,11 &apos; who simply observed the appearance of the cement after perforating.

"The United States Bureau of Mines, in the interest of the prevention of injuries and fatalities in coal mines, has engaged in a study of the circumstances and conditions under which falls of roof and coal contribute to coal-mine accidents, and this publication is devoted to the result of a study conducted in mince developed in the Pittsburgh or No. 8 coal in eastern Ohio.To emphasize the need of this study a statement of the fatalities which have resulted from falls of roof is presented, followed by a brief description of the field and its geology. The mining methods, regulations, and timbering practices are presented and discuss, as well as supervision and discipline, all of which are important factors in the control of the roof and the prevention of falls of roof material that are liable to result in injury to the underground workmen.During the five-year period, 1924 to 1928, there were 10,820 fatalities in the cool mines of the United States, of which number 5,573 or 51.5 per cent resulted from fells of roof material, such as draw slate or roof coal, and of coal from the fact or sides. These fatalities generally occur singly, consequently they are given little publicity compared with major disasters consulting from explosions which, during the same five-year period, amounted to only 17.8 per cent of the total fatalities.Seven,mines in eastern Ohio, each typical, of mines in its locality, have been carefully studied, and the result of this study is herein presented so the information may be and beneficial to all who may be operating mines having,similar natural or physical conditions.In general, it will be found that measures taken to prevent injuries or fatalities from falls of roof as well as other safety measures, will have the effect of increasing the efficiency and economy in mining operation. The result of the study so far made on the falls of roof problem indicates that such features as mine management, supervision, inspection, discipline, character of roof, timbering methods, and blasting have a direct bearing on any scheme that may be evolved to prevent injury or loss of life by falls of roof."

Fe3A1 intermetallics are potential inexpensive candidate for hot applications. In this project, torsion tests on hot-rolled and annealed Fe3A1 (Fe-15.5A1-5.8Cr-1.0Nb¬0.05C) were carried out over the ranges 750-950°C and 0.01~1s-1 . The experimental results showed that when peak stress op>90MPa (LogZ>16s-1 , Z: temperature-compensated strain rate), specimens cracked at randomly low strains. Optical microscopy exhibited original elongated grains and many grain boundary cracks associated with segregation. With op<40MPa (LogZ<16s-&apos;), specimens deformed with low random op but considerably high fracture strains; slowly propagating cracks may explain the reduced flow stress. Optical microscopy showed both elongated grains and equiaxed subgrains with some indications of geometric dynamic recrystallization (gDRX) and of static recrystallization (SRX). Compression tests gave higher stress with little effect of the preexisting cracks. The activation energy Quw of current material in satisfactory torsion and compression tests is about 10% higher than previously published. Fe3A1 has body-centered cubic structure in the experimental range, so it was compared with ferritic stainless steel 434C (Fe- 16.55Cr-0.96Mo-0.21Ni). Constitutive constants and restoration mechanism are compared between these materials. While Fe3A1 is hardly a light metal, it is considerably lighter than most steels. Furthermore, like the other body centered cubic metals (BCC) (a-Fe, ß-Ti, ß-Zr and ß-brass), it exhibits a high degree of dynamic recovery (DRV) like Al alloys, producing easier hot workability than that of austentic stainless steels.

Assam cancer care foundation (ACCF) proposed the construction of hospitals and related facilities across 18 locations in the state of Assam-India. Tezpur is one among the 18 locations of Assam with high seismic risk. The strata at the site are comprised of mostly fine silty sands of lower SPT- N values. The water table is also encountered and ranging from 1 m to 2 m below EGL. Since the site lies in seismic zone V as per IS 1893, detailed liquefaction analysis is carried out for all five boreholes and indicates that soil is liquefiable and ground improvement is inevitable up to a depth of 15 m below existing ground level. To mitigate the liquefaction potential and enhance the seismic performance of the soil, ground improvement using stone columns by Wet top feed Vibro-replacement method is proposed. Also, the differential settlements can be avoided effectively under the raft foundation with Vibro Stone Columns. In this paper, field test validation results such as Pre and post-SPTs and ECPTs to access the extent of ground improvement, along with other information adopted in this project presented.

Residues from titanium smelting tend to contain scandium. The scandiumis discarded because no suitable process exists for its recovery from the residue. Valuable-metal recovery from discharged residue is critical for environmental conservation and to achieve a sustainable society. Since 2015, JXNippon Mining&Metals has been developing a process for scandium recovery from the residue of a titaniumsmelting process. The process consists of the following steps: scandium concentrating by classification or neutralization, selective scandium leaching, impurity removal by neutralization, solvent extraction of scandium by using D2EHPA, purification, and roasting. We optimized the above steps to achieve an effective process to obtain scandium oxide (Sc2O3). In this paper, we introduce results from the bench-scale test of the scandium recovery flowsheet developed by JX Nippon Mining & Metals.
