The availability of mineral aggregates for construction purposes is rapidly declining through inadequate resource planning. restrictive zoning and legislation , and competing land uses. The Geological Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources has undertaken to provide aggregate inventory reports for all townships designated under The Pits and Quarries Control Act, 1971, and eventually for all towns hips in heavily populated areas. The reports contain maps and recommendations for extractive zoning by municipalities; of necessity only the largest deposits are given priority recommendations. It is intended that these reports should improve the resource planning in areas underlain by large aggregate deposits. The inventory is only possible because a concentrated effort has been made to map the Quaternary geology of populated areas over the last ten years. Future needs require that we develop methods to determine the extent of poorly defined and buried aggregates and that we look for natural alternatives.

"The formation of splash in pyrometallurgical operations that involve the injection of gases into a liquid has been the subject of a number of studies over the last few decades. Given the complexity of the phenomena, there have been some advances in understanding the microscale formation of splash but the ability to accurately predict the amount and character of the splash formed is still in its infancy. First, the macroscale mechanisms for splash formation is very varied. Second, the timescales for splash formation are very small, usually less than 100 milliseconds, making experiments elucidating the formation of splash difficult and costly. Work at the GKW CRC has shown that the microscale mechanism of splash formation is primarily is due to the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. Substantial progress has been made in understanding the behaviour of large bubbles in effecting splash formation and a simple model has been developed to estimate the behaviour of splash formed from a top submerged lance. Direct numerical computation of splash formation using the GKMAC codes developed at the Centre has been successful in simulating the impact of liquid drops onto a liquid bath.IntroductionInjection of gases into melts is used in the metallurgical industry to promote mixing to ensure acceptable heat and mass transfer rates, conveying solids for alloying, provide efficient contact for gas-melt reactions, and as a reactant. High gas injection rates bring about the formation of splash and slop. Extensive splash formation leads to loss of valuable product, creation of safety hazards, formation of accretion on refractory lining and exhaust ducts, and increased load on dust removal equipment. Many operators and researchers have claimed that splash formation is the limiting factor in many gas injected processes. The problems listed above lead to loss of production and increased maintenance, adding to the cost of processing base metals. Over the last five years, the GKW CRC has been studying the formation of splash from a number of sources. They include the impingment of drops on liquids[ l·2.31, slopping of bath liquidI4.51, breakup of gas bubbles at the liquid-gas interfacel61, shearing of liquids by gases[7·81, and impact of packets of fluids on solidsl81. Theoretically, the extreme deformation of fluid shape and the influence of surface tension makes the simulation of flow resulting from only a drop impacting on a liquid surface a very challenging computational fluid dynamics problem. Recently, we have been successful in simulating the formation of the Rayleigh jet resulting from a drop impact showing the effect of drop Froude number on the shape of the Rayleigh jet."

Dissolution of gold with elemental bromine was studied by using a rotating disc technique. The main parameters studied were: bromine concentration, stirring speed, pH, and temperature. Additionally, effect of copper, iron, and manganese was also examined. A special attention was paid to elucidate the role of cations, primarily Na+, during gold dissolution. It was found that gold dissolution with bromine was characterized with two pH regions. Below pH=7, gold dissolution was independent of pH, and above this value, gold dissolution decreased with pH increase. Gold dissolution rates were proportional with concentration of bromine. Two regions, diffusional and kinetic, were observed with respect to stirring speed. with respect to the role of Na+, and cations in general, they play absolutely no role during gold dissolution with bromine, unless they are in their lower oxidation state and become oxidized by bromine. In that case they have a negative effect because of bromine consumption.

Minnesota contains a major low- grade copper-nickel sulfide resource within the Duluth Gabbro Complex. Several companies have actively explored this resource. Open pit mining would be required to develop portions of the resource, and as a result, large quantities of sulfide-bearing lean ore and waste rock would be stockpiled. Although the problems associated with high-sulfide tailings and acid mine drainage are well documented, the leaching characteristics of low-grade mineralized stockpiles must be understood for environmental impact assessment, siting, and planning. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and AMAX have cooperated in a research program to study leaching and revegetation -of test stock- piles, Six small (1600 'tons) stockpiles were constructed at the MINNAMAX Project Site and they range in composition from 0.29 to 043 g % copper, 0.075 to 0.09% nickel, and 0.6 to 1.45% sulfur. Two of the stockpiles were covered with mineral soil, one was covered with topsoil, and three were not treated Revegetation plots were established on the piles which received a soil cover. Leachate samples and flow measurements were collected at the base of the piles. Initial results indicate that metal concentrations in leachate samples range from 10 to 10,000 times the concentrations found in the streams of the area. During the first growing season, the test pile covered with topsoil yielded 30% less water than untreated test piles. No reduction in yield was observed for the piles that were covered with the less fertile mineral soil. First-year vegetative growth, expressed as biomass, was four times greater on the-topsoil pile than on the mineral soil piles. The long-term effects of vegetation on leachate quantity and quality continue to be investigated.

[Coals of low-volatile rank cannot be coked without admixing large proportions of high-volatile coal in the usual type of byproduct-coke oven, because they expand excessively and exert side thrust, which ruins the oven walls. Some medium-volatile coals also give trouble. Since high-rank coals produce a strong, blocky coke, it is desirable to have the rank as high as practicable, particularly in the manufacture of foundry coke. Accordingly, it has become the practice to mix or blend high-volatile shrinking, coals with as much low-volatile coal as possible and still have a mixture that will not deform the walls or cause difficulty in pushing the coke. Occasionally, the safe limit of low-volatile coal has been exceeded and ovens have been damaged. It is desirable, therefore, to rave a reliable method of determining the expanding tendencies of mixtures before they are charged into the ovens. Furthermore, coal charges somewhat in its properties as mining progresses, and therefore, mixtures found to be safe at one time may cease to be so subsequently, particularly if nearly the maximum allowable percentage of low-volatile coal is being used.]

The role of the interfacial electrical 'Condition on the adsorption of col-lectors on mineral surfaces has been studied by electrophoretic mobility and adsorption measurements made on zircon. From the investigation of the electrokinetic properties of zircon, H+ and OH-are seen to act as potential determining ions, thus controlling the electrical nature of this mineral. The isoelectric point of zircon occurs at a pH of approximately 5.0, and it is evident, therefore, that the zircon surface would be positively charged below a pH of 5.0 and negatively charged above this pH. The adsorption of collectors therefore de-pends strongly on the pH of the solution; anionic collectors are adsorbed on positively charged surfaces and cationic collectors on negatively charged surfaces. This, in turn, de-fines the effective flotation condition, with respective collectors, for this mineral. The above results have been correlated with the flotation behaviour obtained by the simplified flotation test using a modified Hallimond tube.

This paper summarizes the Bureau of Reclamation's experience in the use of boring machines to excavate six major tunnels on the Bureau's water resources development projects in the western United States. The summary of experience is presented as a compilation of brief case studies for each of the six tunnels. Each compilation presents data on the tunnel dimensions, geological characteristics of the excavated rock, the tunneling machine used, machine operation, muck handling, method of tunnel support, ventilation system, and related information. The listing of the six tunnels in Table 1 reflects a diversity of tunnel lengths and diameters. However, despite this diversity of dimensions as well as the variety of rock encountered during excavation, the six tunnels have one major characteristic in common: their excavation was significantly expedited by the use of boring machines. Beginning with the 10,079-foot-long Tunnel No. 1 on the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project in New Mexico - the Bureau's first tunnel to be excavated by a boring machine - the boring machines, or "moles," have demonstrated their effectiveness in rapid and economical tunnel excavation. Tunnel No. 1, virtually 2 miles long, was bored through in 9 months, an unprecedented achievement in Bureau engineering experience, as compared with tunnels previously excavated by conventional means. The design of near-surface civil infrastructure requires detailed consideration of the geological/ geotechnical conditions, excavation geometry and sequence and ground support measures to ensure stability of the underground openings and minimal impact on overlying or adjacent infrastructure. Twin parallel road tunnels have been designed and built with connecting cross passages and a piggyback busway tunnel as part of a large infrastructure project in Australia. The tunnels were excavated in poor to fair quality rocks using road headers. Temporary ground support includes shotcrete, rock bolts and canopy tubes. Extensive numerical analyses have been performed to analyse the expected behaviour of the tunnels during excavation, including two-dimensional analyses using UDEC and three-dimensional analyses using FLAC3D. Structural defects in the rock are explicitly included in the 2D analyses to examine the potential for localised ground instability. The stress redistribution is captured by the 3D modelling with an accurate representation of the complex excavation geometry and the detailed excavation and support sequence. This paper presents the modelling methodology, numerical results and discussions on integrating both 2D and 3D analyses to achieve reasonable design.

Copper is one of the most widely used metals in industrial processes and is also present in most mining operations. Extraction of copper from solutions often proves difficult due to the presence of complexing agents. ChromatoChem, Inc. has developed a Solid Phase Extraction (SPE) support (HiPAC) for removal and recovery of metals from wastewater. The HiPAC SPE support employs chelating agents covalently coupled to a long linker molecule. Several solutions containing copper and complexing agents were tested including 1) copper and carbonate, pH 9.8, 2) mixed metals and anions with copper and cyanide, pH 11, and 3) copper and the chelating agent EDTA, pH 11. The copper was extracted from solutions one and two at high pH, but the EDTA containing solution needed the pH lowered to make the copper available for capture. In each example, the copper concentration was significantly reduced by HiPAC SPE treatment.

Synthesis of hydrocarbons by the Fischer-Tropsch reaction in a hot-gas- recycle system was demonstrated to be technically feasible. This project was undertaken, by the Bureau of Mines, to determine if the system was operable and to ascertain the optimum conditions for the production of gasoline. Carbon steel turnings packed with a void volume from 88 to 90 pct. were satisfactory catalysts, but steel catalysts with greater void volume, either turnings or steel wool, were not as active. Good temperature control with a pressure drop of less than 0.5 pounds per square inch (p.s,i,) per foot of catalyst bed of turnings was obtained by operating with a recycle to fresh feed ratio of 20 and by splitting the total gas flaw and injecting portions into the reactor at different entry ports.

The technological applications of MgH2 hydrides for hydrogen storage demand the overcoming of some critical issues: an improvement of the reaction kinetics and a reduction of the desorption temperature. The synthesis of nanocrystalline MgH2 by reactive milling and inert gas condensation and a proper metal catalyst addition, constitute recently employed strategies. In the investigation of the hydrogen short and long-range dynamics, sorption kinetics and nanostructure stability, the mechanical spectroscopy offers some specific advantages. In the present research this technique was employed with other experimental approaches (XRD DSC) to investigate relaxational and structural damping processes in nanocrystalline MgH2 with added catalysts (Fe). Time/temperature variation of the dynamic elasticity moduli and mechanical quality factor are correlated to hydrogen anelastic relaxation processes and concomitant structural transformation of MgH2 to Mg associated to long range H diffusion. Results are discussed with reference to microstructural modification strategies able to assist hydrogen release.

A MmNi5 alloy is synthesized by a combination of mechanical milling and low temperature heating processes. Synthesis time is 40 h for powders milled in a low energy ball mill at room temperature. A reduction in milling time is obtained if massive sample is mechanically milled at shorter times (2 h to 10 h) and heated at temperatures lower (600 ºC) than the usual temperatures used in equilibrium methods (>800 ºC). The alloy formation is detected even at a combination of temperatures as low as 200 ºC and milling times as short as 5 h. The temporal evolution of mechanical milling process was followed by both X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to detect the main stages of milling. Four stages were detected: Initial, Intermediate, Final and Completion. These stages were correlated to an enhancement of the synthesis method by combination of times of milling shorter than 10 h and temperatures of heating lower than 600 ºC.

Water plays a significant role in minerals processing; this is especially true in coal preparation where water-based beneficiation is widely accepted and consistently delivering sharp separation efficiencies and high product yields. Although wet processing is favoured, the substantial process water requirement may prove this impractical and unsustainable in some parts of the world. Many coal-rich regions (including South Africa) have experienced severe water shortages. Coupled with the effects of drought, some countries experience freezing winters from which problems related to frozen process water and machinery may arise. Hence coal preparation practices will soon have to adapt, irrespective of the technical and economic feasibility offered by the currently employed water-based methods. As a result, extensive research into the development of dry methods for effectively beneficiating coal has progressed. This review paper intends to provide a collection of the relevant information pertaining to dry coal processing globally, and aid in understanding the applicability, performance, success or failure thereof. The methods available for dry materials preparation, with special regard to those applicable for coal beneficiation, are detailed in terms of principle, applicability, limitations and performance. Dry coal beneficiation has potential to aid the current wet-based methods with some considerations to possible limitations set forth by coal geology, application, product specification, particle size distribution, moisture, efficiency, capacity and cost. These methods may be established in future, especially in the arctic, arid and under-developed regions through new plant installations, expansions and small mines processing. THE hardness anisotropy of metals and alloys has been of increasing interest in recent years but silicon ferrite,1 niobium,2 and tungsten3,4 are the only bcc metals about which this type of information has been reported. This investigation was carried out on vanadium and chromium single crystals in an effort to determine to what degree the hardness variations observed in these metals are due to orientation effects and to compare their behavior with other bcc metals. In earlier work the authors had observed a small angular dependence in the Diamond Pyramid Hardness of single crystalline vanadium on the (100) plane but no anisotropic effects were noted on either the (110) or (111) planes. At the suggestion of R. G. wheeler5 it was decided to investigate this effect in greater detail using the more asymmetric Knoop indentor. The vanadium metal used in the study was prepared by the aluminothermic reduction of V2O5 followed by electron beam melting.6 The principal analyzed impurities were 230 ppm C, 230 ppm O, 65 ppm N, 90 pprn Al, Cr not detected, 50 ppm Fe, 60 ppm Ni, and 200 ppm Si. The chromium was an iodide-refined product obtained from the Chromalloy Corporation. Analysis of this material showed the following amounts of impurities present: 10 ppm C, 9 ppm O, 2 ppm N, 0.4 ppm H, 3 ppm Al, 2 ppm Ca, 2 ppm Cu, 20 ppm Fe, 1 ppm Mg, 0.3 ppm Mn, 1 ppm Mo, 3 ppm Ni, 10 ppm Si, and 1 ppm V. Single crystals of both metals about 1 cm in diam and 10 cm in length were grown by an arc-zone melt- ing technique.7 The chromium crystal was annealed at 1600°C for 6 hr in a purified argon atmosphere to remove any strains or inhomogeneities, but the vanadium was tested in the as-grown condition. The crystals were oriented by the Laue back-reflection method and then sectioned with a spark cutter into individual specimens with a (loo), (110), or (111) plane parallel to the crystal surface. They were mounted in Lucite and carefully ground to a flat surface. The vanadium specimens were then electropolished in a 6 pct perchloric acid-methanol mixture while the chromium specimens were mechanically polished on a Syntron vibratory polisher using an alumina abrasive. The orientation of each crystal was then rechecked by the back-reflection X-ray method. All of them were found to lie within 2 deg of the desired orientation with the exception of the (110)-Oriented chromium crystal which was within 4 deg. Microhardness impressions were taken at 10 deg intervals from the common (110) direction by rotating the crystal in the plane of the crystal surface. A Knoop indentor was used with a 400-g load on the vanadium crystals and an 800-g load on the chromium. The hardness values are averages of 6 impressions and standard deviations were calculated for each set of data. The values reported for the (111) plane of vanadium are based on from 10 to 15 measurements for each point. The Federal Bureau of Mines refined chromium from an aqueous electrolytic process in molten sodium chloride-chromium chloride electrolytes. Oxygen and nitrogen contents were reduced by a factor of 10 to 40, but most other impurities were little changed. The product usually contained a little more iron than the feed. Since iron was entering the bath from the iron pot and the graphite liner at a nearly constant rate, contamination of the chromium deposits by it was more serious at low currents and deposition rates. A few runs in an iron cell with a nickel liner yielded chromium containing one half as much iron as the feed, but up to 1.5 pct. nickel. In all cases the anode feed lay in the bottom of the container, which itself was used as the anode connection. With a 12-in. cell, variations in applied voltage from 0.05 to 1.5, in current from less than 10 to over 100 a., and in initial cathode current densities from less than 100 to over 2,000 a./sq.ft. had little or no effect upon the analysis of the metal produced) except for iron content. Changes in bath analysis from 3 to 11 pct. chromium were also without effect. These changes did bring about large differences in the physical forms of the crystals obtained. The thick heavy crystals produced at low voltage and current contained voids which made them difficult to leach free of chlorides. Easiest to leach were the thin leaf-like crystals obtained at around 1 v.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted studies to determine if phosphate slag stockpiles at Tennessee Valley Authority's National Fertilizer Development Center were hazardous materials. The stockpiles were not hazardous materials as determined by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) extraction procedure (EP) toxicity test. Radium-226 concentration was 28.7 pCi/g in slag and 2.1 pCi/g in background material. Radium-226 was not leached from the slag. Fluoride concentration was 3.87 pct in slag, 0.18 pct in subsurface material under slag, and 0.08 pct in the background. Slag material permeability was 1.65 x 10-3 cm/s, and subsurface material permeability was 3.24 x 10-6 cm/s. Rain water, trapped in a depression on top of the east slag stockpile, became seepage water at the base of the stockpile. Concentrations of EPA toxic elements in seepage water were much less than concentrations from an EPA EP toxicity test on the slag. Twelve elements-Na, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Cr, Mn, Co, Cu, Cd, AI, and P-had higher concentrations in seepage water than in rain water on top of the slag stockpiles, or in creek water adjacent to stockpile bases, indicating that they were leached from slag stockpiles.

In the summer of 1990, a study was conducted to document large tractor (i.e., Caterpillar Dl1N) utilization in surface coal mining. The tractors were found to be utilized as primary production machines and in combination systems with blast casting and draglines and blast casting and excavator/truck systems. In addition, dozers were used to prebench ahead of a primary dragline system. The study also established ranges and averages for Dl1N operating costs and mechanical availability. Based on simulated production of various tractor dozing applications, the potential for low cost coal stripping was suggested (Hrebar, 1991). A follow-up study, also funded by Caterpillar Inc., was conducted in the summer of 1991 to determine actual production rates in two dozer stripping applications. These actual production rates would then serve as a foundation for estimates of stripping costs. This paper presents the results of the studies in a contour and a cast application.

Single particle impact breakage experiments provide essential data to aid in understanding of rock fracture in comminution. Such experiments, conducted using devices such as the drop weight tester, split Hopkinson bars and more recently the rotary breakage tester, have been successfully used to characterize ore breakage properties in relation to measured fracture energies. The work presented in this paper highlights the techniques behind the calculation of impact breakage properties from each of these three devices. The breakage parameters that can be calculated from experimental data from each of these are to be described. Drop weight tests are used to calculate A and b hardness parameters using the standard JK breakage model. Split Hopkinson pressure bars are used to establish the ultimate compressive stress of particles through single impact breakage tests and the fraction of impact energy utilized to cause particle fracture. Low energy breakage tests using the rotary breakage tester are shown to be used in calculating particle breakage probability. Methods to calculate parameters related to particle breakage probabilities such as E0 and Ecrit are also discussed.
