No new goldfields have been found in the Witwatersrand Basin for over 60 years, and one consequence of this is a long-term decline in gold production. Exploration throughout this period has been based on the placer model that infers alluvial transport of gold grains and then sedimentary sorting in the basin; however, there is no viable source for so much alluvial gold and no single sedimentary setting that hosts the gold.An alternative genetic model can now provide a quantified explanation for the source of the gold, and it does not rely on alluvial gold processes. The hydrothermal model can easily explain the source of the Witwatersrand gold as being derived from the background gold at parts per billion (ppb) level throughout the Kaapvaal craton of South Africa. This gold is involved in metamorphic processes, available for solution in metamorphic fluids, and hence may be transported whilst dissolved in fluid into the Witwatersrand Basin. The hydrothermal model warrants consideration as it can explain the source of gold, the large alteration halo in the goldfields, the mineralogy, and especially the gold-carbon association.Working on the premise that if one model (placer) is not giving the desired results (discovery of new goldfields), then it may be prudent to consider alternatives. Application of a hydrothermal model to guide exploration would place importance on large and small early structures in and around the Witwatersrand Basin; it would also emphasise the geochemical nature of potential host rocks (especially C and Fe) rather than their sedimentary origin.CITATION:Phillips, G N, 2013. Laboratory tests were conducted to determine the technical feasibility of separating anthracite particles from a water-anthracite slurry by atomizing the water and removing the resulting mist in an air current. Products containing 21 percent or less moisture were obtained from slurries made with minus 60-mesh anthracite. Typical recoveries ranged between 67 and 79 percent of the feed when the slurries were atomized in air currents with velocities below 70 ft/min.

Room-and-pillar mining is commonly employed for the extraction of rock salt in undergroundmines. Pillar stress is a major concern in these mines as it is directly related to stability and mineralrecovery. In this study a flat jack method was used to measure pillar stresses in three undergroundrock salt mines in Pakistan. The field work included determination of in-situ stress, in-situ elastic modulus, recording of field variables (pillar length and width, height and width of opening, opening width to height ratio, extraction ratio, and overburden height) and collection of salt block samples. The geomechanical properties of rock salt (uniaxial compressive strength, Young’s modulus, Brazilian tensile strength, and density) were also determined to estimate overburden stress, pillar strength, and factor of safety (both estimated and actual). It was found that the measured pillar stresses are proportional to the overburden stress values, with their magnitude ranging from 6.05 MPa to 11.97 Mpa, and the pillars were found to be stable. Regression analysis was performed to develop statistical models for in-situ stress and in-situ elastic modulus. Finally a quick guideline chart was developed to determine the suitable length of pillar for a given span and required level of safety.

Dundee Precious Metals Inc. (DPM) owns and operates the Ada Tepe gold mine and processing facility (previously referred to as the Krumovgrad Gold Project) located in south-western Bulgaria. The Ada Tepe mine became the first green filed project in past 40 year in Balkans and one of the few in Europe when it was commissioned during the first half of 2019. The plant produces a high-grade gold silicate concentrate generated through its comminution circuit and staged floatation reactors (SFR’s) while depositing its tailings in a state-of-the-art Integrated Mine Waste Facility (IMWF). This paper presents the successful commissioning, ramp-up and optimization of the Ada Tepe processing plant and how the various challenges, including that of an inexperienced front-line workforce, were overcome. More specifically addressing how the implemented modern processing technologies and the operational readiness program, supported the people and process to achieve the design parameters safely and consistently. Although overall worker productivity for U.S. underground coal mines is available, productivity by mining method and seam thickness is not. Mining technology has gone through dramatic changes in the past decade, and the industry has experienced a lack of accurate productivity Figures addressing these changes. This information is of great interest in planning for future mining systems as thick and shallow coal seams currently being mined are depleted and exploitation of thinner, deeper, and better quality seams is considered to partially meet the requirements of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. In a cooperative program, the U.S. Bureau of Mines obtained raw mine level production and related data from U.S. Energy Information Administration for 1989 and 1990 and performed the needed statistical analysis. Base criteria, parameters, and salient results of the mine productivity analysis are presented in this report.

Introduction The property of Siscoe Gold Mines, Limited, is located on an island of three hundred and forty acres in lake Kienawisik, about fifty-two miles east of Noranda and forty-three miles south of Amos, Quebec. Lake Kienawisik is a part of the Harricanaw drainage system and is crossed by the main line of the Canadian National railway at Amos. This waterway is navigable for boats with a draught of six to eight feet. Diesel engines have been the source of power at the property since milling operations were commenced in January, 1929. The power plant as first designed and built was for a milling capacity of 100 tons. Two Polar-Atlas units, each of 200 h. p., comprised the original installation. With the growth of the 'mine, more engines were added until, at the present time, there is installed at the Siscoe what is rated the largest Diesel plant at any mining property in Canada. Definition of a Diesel 'The Diesel engine is an internal combustion engine which works with liquid fuel introduced after, and independently of, the air charge at a time when communication between the cylinder and the outside atmosphere is cut off, and which ignites the fuel by compression-beat and stored combustion-heat unassisted by heat sources outside the cylinder itself while the engine is in stable operating condition"(1).

Computer-aided control of a mining machine places its operator in a safe, remote location, thus reducing health and safety risks. Sensing systems that provide machine position (xy coordinates) and heading (yaw) are extremely useful in aiding remote positioning of mining machines. The US Bureau of Mines (Bureau) developed two sensing systems for position and heading information: a scanning laser system based on the Lasernet sensor and a mechanical position and heading system based on linear-position transducers. The Bureau is also investigating a system from Honeywell, the modular azimuth and positioning system (MAPS), that employs ring-laser gyroscopes (RLGs). This paper presents a brief background and status of these sensing systems as applied to a continuous mining machine (CM). Included are field test results off each system operating in a room-and-pillar research section at a cooperating West Virginia mine.

Coal was discovered in South Africa in the mid 1830's. The earliest exploitation of modern times was probably in Natal where, in a letter dated 20 August 1842, a Captain Smith mentions that a wagonload of coal brought to Pietermaritzburg, was sold. Until the discovery of diamonds in 1867 and the Witwatersrand gold in 1886, coal mining satisfied a very small domestic demand. By 1889, at least four collieries were operating in the Middelburg-Witbank district, some 120 kilometres East of Johannesburg, and mining had star- ted at Vereeniging, about 50 kilometres to the South of Johannesburg. A map of South Africa is shown in Figure 1 and an enlargement of the main coal mining areas in Figure 2.

The construction of refineries and gas conservation plants in the general Edmonton area in the early 1950's made available large quantities of by-product liquified petroleum gases (LPG). These gases, together with discovery of increasing reserves of natural gas in the Edmonton area, provided Canadian Chemical Company with two of the necessities for petrochemical production, namely, available and reasonably priced raw materials and fuel. This paper outlines the development of the $83 million Edmonton plant from its origin, together with a brief description of the processes and some of the interesting features involved. Several economic aspects of the petrochemical industry are high-lighted including its importance to the local community and the province. The paper reviews the relationship between the oil and gas industry and petrochemical manufacturing and indicates some of the factors that may affect the future growth of the petro-chemical industry in Wes tern Canada.

This study addresses a widespread problem confronting the mining industry: the deleterious effect of clay minerals in flotation. This problem is seemingly exacerbated by the presence of iron contamination from grinding media. The interaction of clay minerals and grinding media in copper and gold flotation was investigated in this study. A low-clay ore and a high-clay ore were obtained from Telfer to represent different contents of clay minerals, while stainless steel and mild steel grinding rods were used to produce different grinding chemistry, in particular, iron contamination. Flotation tests on an unsized and sized basis were conducted to reveal how clay minerals and grinding media affect copper and gold flotation. Iron contamination and the oxidation of copper minerals were quantified by ethylene diamine-tetra acetic acid (EDTA) extraction. It is interesting to find that both clay minerals and iron contamination depressed the flotation primarily in fine particles smaller than 33 ¦m, and clay minerals played a dominant role. Although flotation of coarser particles greater than 33 ¦m was less affected by clay minerals and iron contamination, coarser grinding to increase P80 was not an effective way to improve copper and gold flotation for the high-clay ore. This study suggests that to improve copper and gold flotation from clay ores, clay dispersion in conjunction with the minimisation of iron contamination may be required.CITATION:Wei, R, Peng, Y and Seaman, D, 2013. In the 19th century, mining in northern Chile was of great economic importance. Today, the ruinsof the copper smelters and abundant fragments of refractory bricks from their furnaces remain. Therefractory materials have not been previously studied. the origin, physical and chemical properties, and compressive strength of 10 different samples of historical refractory bricks collected on-site were investigated. The characterization results showed that the bricks are silico-aluminous, unlike the magnesium-chromium bricks used by current foundries. It was determined that 90% of them were produced in the UK and 10% were manufactured in Chile. The phases present are mullite, quartz, cristobalite, and tridymite, and the chemical composition corresponds mainly to SiO2. The compressive strength of the historical bricks is similart to those currently used,. These results may contribute to the knowledge of the 19th century mining and metallurgical historical heritage of Chile and the UK.

Alberta Plains coals exhibit an almost rectilinear system of vertical fracturing called "cleat", which is best traced by mapping true bearings of underground coal mine rooms. The cleat pattern is approximately conformable with a pattern of surficial features and a pattern of bedrock jointing in the Alberta Plains, and with the trend of the Rocky Mountain Trench, but not with the distribution pattern of coal rank nor with the trend of the eastern boundary of the Rocky Mountains and Foothills physiographic province. The processes resulting in cleat remain in doubt, but cleat is always of practical importance in extracting coal from deeply buried deposits.

The Marvel Loch Operations (MLO) plant was treating ores from up to six MLO sources and in addition needed to blend externally sourced ores with its own ores. This presented a metallurgical accounting dilemma, which was subsequently addressed by the design, implementation and testing of an automatic sampling system. The MLO automatic sampler was well designed and has been the subject of previous internal and external reviews. The sampling action is fully automated and the unit is essentially self cleaning particularly when sampling primary ores. The purpose of this paper is to document the rationale behind the design, the specific details of the sampling station, its use for ore purchase purposes and an assessment of the sampling system to meet the needs of the operator.

The Bureau of Mines investigations described in this report were undertaken to devise a process to economically recover precious metals and copper from low-grade, complex electronic scrap generated in large quantities by military and civilian electronic operations. Leaching with various media is applicable to certain selected items of electronic scrap but cannot be practically applied to complex mixtures of scrap. A process comprising incineration, caustic leaching to remove aluminum, smelting with a siliceous slag, and electrolysis recovered 99.9-percent-pure copper metal and anode slimes assaying more than 7,000 ounces per ton of combined precious metals. Silver, gold, and copper recoveries were 93, 95, and 87 percent, respectively. Cost analysis indicated that an alternative process using direct smelting of the scrap to make assayable products for sale to a custom smelter would provide better overall financial returns.

THAT Illinois is an important mineral producing state is well known. A value of over $237,000,000 for the mineral products in 1926 indicates the magnitude of the industries. Coal mining is the largest mineral industry, and the value of its product was about 63 per cent of the total mineral production of the state. Oil and gas constituted about 8 per cent and the non-metallic minerals about 29 per cent. This 29 per cent represents the production of a varied group of mineral industries of wide geographic distribution through the state.

"In order to investigate the fractal feature of coalmine deep rock fragments under impact loads, variable cross-section split Hopkinson pressure bar apparatus, 50 mm in diameter, was adopted to conduct impact compressive test for rock specimens from -962m deep coalmine. Various impact pressures, such as 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 and 1.2MPa, were selected to implement different loading rates. Sieving statistical analyses were conducted for rock fragments after being impacted, and the particle size distribution of broken rock in various loading rates were calculated with the fractal method and then the corresponding fractal dimension was obtained. Test results shows that there is a good self-similarity and fractal feature in fragments distribution of deep coalmine sandstone under impact loads. The fractal dimension of fragments is between 1.9 and 2.7. The research also indicates that there is an approximate power relationship between dynamic compressive strength and fractal dimension, and a strength power relationship between fractal dimension and average strain rate. Moreover, there is a linear relationship between fractal dimension and specimen absorbed energy. The rock fractured process can be quantitatively described through fractal dimension, which can reflect the deep rock broken degree and is an ideal index to evaluate the distribution of rock fragments.INTRODUCTIONBroken rock is one of the most basic processes in mining operations, rock fragmentation has always been an important index to evaluate rock breaking effect (Xu & Yu, 1984). Macroscopic fragmentation of rock material is the final results of continuous development, expansion, gathering and cutthrough of internal micro-cracks. This process, developing from microscopic damage to macroscopic fragmentation, is an energy dissipation process and shows fractal characteristics (Xie, 1993). Turcotte (1986) has conducted statistical analyses of fragmentation for different kinds of geological materials under various broken conditions, and arrived at the conclusion that fragmentation distribution is a fractal."

"Although a resource model is central to the mineral resource value estimation process (Glacken and Snowden, 2001), creating it is a labour intensive task and in the end it is a limited representation of the actual orebody. Creating this resource model is a labour intensive task that requires inputs from geology, mining, metallurgical and commercial disciplines. It requires thousands of samples from hundreds of drill holes to be verified, grouped in geological domain, interpolated and then valued. Even after all this effort, a model is only an estimation; therefore further significant effort has gone into quantifying uncertainty in the model and subsequently risk around any value estimates derived from the model. Further risks to model quality are introduced through poorly conditioned data or incorrect assumptions.This paper proposes the application of machine learning to automate the resource model development. Machine learning is applied to the traditionally manual tasks of geological formation, domain identification and validation of the block model mineralogy. Through automation the resource estimation process can be accelerated, allowing more drill holes or a larger resource body to be processed in a given time frame, or allowing the process to be more agile to changes in input data and assumptions. A case study based on drill hole data from a Western Australian iron ore deposit (Government of Western Australia, Department of Mines and Petroleum, 2015) is used to demonstrate the application of machine learning in this process.CITATION:Oliver, S and Willingham, D, 2016.
