Zinc oxide (ZnO) flowered-fibrous micro/nanowebs were produced as thin films on glass substrates at 350 °C using the low cost spray pyrolysis (SP) method. The films were characterized using the XRD diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Hexagonal structure was confirmed from X-ray diffractogram, which showed preferential orientation along the (002) line. SEM images showed two dimensional flowered-fibrous micro/nanowebs, and EDS elemental analysis revealed the presence of chlorine in the films in addition to zinc and oxygen. The obtained morphology is important for optoelectronic device industry and solar cells, where it provides large surface area that helps light harvesting.

In the dropping zone of blast furnace (BF), primary slag absorbing ash of pulverized coal and coke become to be intermediate slag. Due to viscosity and surface tension of slag and the pore between cokes, some slag remained in coke layer and affected the permeability of blast furnace. The flow behavior of slag with different basicity (0.55–1.10) and Al/Si (0.35–0.50) were studied. Meanwhile, the viscosity and surface tension of slag were calculated. The results showed that, with the increasing basicity of slag, surface tension increased and viscosity decreased. With the Al/Si increase, surface tension and viscosity increased. The smallest pore that all slag can pass through was 4.5 mm. However, the height between slag droplets and the bottom of crucible indicated that the ability of slag to pass through pore were weakened with the increasing basicity and Al/Si. Thus, slag which absorbed ash from fuel become difficult to pass through coke layer.

INTRODUCTION Radiation is one of the many agents occurring in our environment that is capable of causing cancers. We are all unavoidably exposed to natural background radiation. If we wish to exploit the beneficial uses of radiation in medicine, industry, and for the production of electricity, some further exposures to radiation are almost inevitable. One needs to ensure therefore, that the standards of radiation protection are safely derived and one would want to understand the mechanism by which radiation might cause cancer and genetic defects. In order to study the effects of radiation one can: (1) analyze human data, (2) perform animal experiments, and (3) do molecular level experiments. Indeed all three kinds of information are needed. This paper will concentrate on the steps required to obtain some of the necessary human data regarding health effects, where the concern is about the impact and consequences of long-term low-level exposures to an agent. Such investigations require some knowledge of work histories, dose histories, health "outcomes", and the personal identification of the individual involved. Three inter-related computer systems have been developed at Statistics Canada which have been designed to permit optimal use of a number of different records for our entire country for such health related research. The development of the Canadian Mortality Data Base, the initiation of the National Cancer Incidence Reporting System, and the development of new computer linkage techniques have helped reduce the cost and increase the scale and efficiency of automated follow-up to produce statistics of sickness or death associated with radiation and other carcinogenic agents in mines. These computer systems have already been implemented, and references will be made to studies currently being conducted using these files and facilities (e.g. a study of all Ontario miners, plus various Canadian uranium, fluorospar, salt and nickel miners). We will also look at the kinds of data that need to be collected now, to improve such studies in the future. DELAYED RISKS - THE STUDY SIZE AND COST Delayed effects on human health, as for example industrially caused cancer, can in general only be detected and measured by following-up the individuals to see what eventually becomes of them. What is not generally recognized is that the relatively low levels of individual risk, about which the public is often concerned, usually requires for their detection that very large numbers of "exposed" and "control" individuals (e.g. 10,000 to 100,000 or more) be followed over a period of two or three decades to determine when they die, what they die of, and whether they contracted cancer or some other disease of special concern. Thus, it is frequently exceedingly difficult to make such investigations cost-effective so that they will be undertaken at all, and as a result very real risks to health can remain undetected or unquantified. THE MANUAL PROCEDURES Follow-up of individuals by epidemiologists has until recently been a largely manual and clerical operation. It has used a diversity of source record files; local, regional, and national. Often the tracing of people has involved letters sent through the mails and visits to institutions, physicians, municipal offices, and former neighbours. Only thus could one find out whether the individuals were dead or alive. Such studies were necessarily small, or else very expensive. Death registrations have, by tradition, provided a valuable tool for the identification of harmful influences in the environment. However, with the increasing mobility in the population, death may often occur far away from the place of exposure to such an influence. Thus, no longer will simple manual searches in a single registry office suffice to inform the investigator concerning the deaths that may have occurred in a study population, especially when that population is large. In the past, manual follow-up to locate the relevant death registration normally required some prior knowledge of the province and year of death in question, so that the alphabetic indexes could he used to direct researchers to the appropriate bound volumes of registration forms. To search manually in this fashion for any large number of death registrations, without knowing in which year or province the deaths had taken place, or even whether they had yet occurred, would be impractical, since each year in Canada there are about 170,000 deaths. DEATH AND CANCER AS SPECIAL ENDPOINTS Much of recent effort has been focused on the organization of the "endpoint" files required to do long-term follow-up studies on a national scale, because that is a function which other institutions are unable to perform due to the confidentiality laws governing the use of such information. Outside organizations generally come to us with detailed "starting" point records which relate to some specific group requiring study. Primary economical deposits of rare-earth elements (REEs) are exhausting all over the world, and it has become necessary to find new sources and methods for their extraction. In addition, increasing the application of REEs in modern technological society has increased its demand globally. One of the important movements to compensate for the future shortages of critical metals is the recovery of REEs from recyclable materials. This paper presents a review of the classification and extraction methods, as well as general applications of REEs with emphasis on secondary sources such as coal and coal byproducts, iron ore tailings, apatite, and phosphate byproducts. An overview of the current state of knowledge on the various methods of REE beneficiation and extraction is covered. These methods include physical separation, as well as hydrometallurgical and bio-hydrometallurgical techniques. The application of these REE extraction techniques for enhanced recovery has been driven primarily by the unique industrial application of these important elements. This paper further explores the existing and potential environmental challenges associated with REE extraction. The authors have presented a wide array of literature, in-depth discussion of the subject, and a succinct summary of processes and relevant case studies.

Discussion of Mr. Baker's paper, read at the Lake Superior Meeting, September, 1904. MR. T. F. WITHERBEE, Durango, Mexico (communication to the Secretary*) : Mr. Baker's paper is very instructive in that it shows how furnace-derangements sometimes originate from apparently slight causes. In 1896 a similar burning through of the lining occurred at the Mayville furnace of the Northwestern Iron Co., Mayville, Wis., in exactly 38 days from the time the furnace was blown in. At that time I attributed it to the fact that the bell was carried several inches to the front side of the furnace, the length of the versed side of the arc described by the lever, thus dumping a little more of the charge on the back side, which made the front side of the furnace-charge more open and consequently increased the circulation of the furnace gases through it. After reading Mr. Baker's description, I believe that possibly a little more ore was charged on the back side of the hopper, due to the fact that it was nearest to the elevator. This unequal charging, however, was unconsciously done, as the fillers were both honest and faithful. The illustration of the burned lining of Furnace No. 1, given in Fig. - of Mr. Baker's paper answers very well for the Mayville furnace. It shows that in both cases the destruction of the lining was largely due to faulty construction, in that there were no cooling-plates in the angle of the bosh and in one or two courses of brick above it, where I believe they are-more in demand than anywhere else in the furnace. The presence of these cooling-plates at the angle of the bosh would have obliged the current of the hot gases to turn the corner and would have prevented them from following the angle of the bosh com¬pletely through the lining and shell.

"In response to the severe drought on the Colorado River basin and in order to preserve existing water capacity to the Las Vegas Valley, the Southern Nevada Water Authority contracted a new deep-water intake (Intake No. 3) located in Lake Mead. The current project (Contract No. 070F-01-C1) includes 5 km (3 miles) of tunnel with very difficult geological conditions and a 200- m (650-ft) deep shaft and marine works. This paper will present the current status of the design-build contract being constructed by Vegas Tunnel Constructors and the challenges and problems faced and the innovative solutions developed to handle the difficult conditions encountered during tunneling with up to 15 bars of pressure.ProjectbackgroundThe Las Vegas Valley receives the majority of its water from Lake Mead, which is located approximately 30 km (20 miles) east of the Las Vegas, NV metropolitan area. Due to the severe drought that has hit the southwest region of the United States, the water level in Lake Mead has receded from its high water level of 372 m (1,221 ft) above mean sea level (amsl) to a low of 330 m (1,076 ft) amsl in June 2015. Should the lake level continue to fall, at elevation 320 m (1,050 ft) amsl, the current water intakes will not be able to draw enough water to meet the needs of the local area. The risk of losing water capacity has prompted the construction of a new deeper intake. Not only is the new Intake No. 3 situated at a lower elevation in the lake at 262 m (860 ft) amsl, the new Intake No. 3 is also located to draw better quality (Fig. 1).Project challengesThe project has had several difficult challenges to overcome:• The work consisted of a 1.2 kt (1,300 st) structure constructed on a barge and lowered 100 m (330 ft) into Lake Mead anchored with 9,200 m3 (12,200 cu yd) of tremie concrete.• The drill-and-blast starter tunnel was impacted by three inflow events, resulting in a one-year project delay.• One of the main challenges was selecting the tunnel boring machine (TBM) and excavating the tunnel with expected hydraulic head pressure of as much as 17 bar (16 bar was the highest pressure recorded during the drive), crossing faulted areas, low rock cover and the risk of tunnel instability due to direct connection with the lake.• Extensive pre-excavation grouting with a constant head pressure ranging from 12 bar to 15 bar.• Structural repair of the cutterhead in difficult hydrogeological conditions [water inflow of approx. 800 m3/hr (4,000 gpm)].• Complete repair of the cascade sealing system for the main bearing and two replacements of the pinion bearings.• The TBM approach to the intake structure."

Introduction 1n assembling material for this paper on Wood Refuse Burning 1 turned first to the records of our early studies of the problem in order to learn how and why certain basic decisions were arrived at and also how it came about that the completed central steam plant differed so much from the original plans. It may be of interest, therefore, to outline the engineering problems as they presented themselves in the early part of 1948, and to indicate the economies involved. Although the principle of using wood refuse as boiler fuel instead of burning it to waste was quite sound, and in fact the practice had been in use for a long time in the boilers of many lumber companies, there was some guesswork as far as Hollinger was concerned in deciding how best to handle the large quantities of wood refuse involved and as to the type of boiler equipment necessary to .burn it efficiently. These problems will be examined first. Hollinger Boiler Equipment in 1948 Hollinger had four separate boiler houses, at Main, No. II, and No. 19 shafts, and a small unit at the compressor plant for heating purposes. Main and No. Il boiler houses operated all the year round; No. 19 and the compressor plant only in the winter. At Main there were four 36-year-old HRT boilers with total available h.p. of 500, at No. II, three 30-year-old HRT boilers with 195 available h.p., and at No. 19 two old field-type locomotive boilers capable of producing 95 h.p.

In this paper the possibility to complete the copper recovery and to enrich in PVC a mixture of plastic granules obtained by grinding electrical cables are investigated. The recovery of a large part of the copper still present among the plastic granules was possible by means of a mechanical screening, the finer polymeric fraction was collected, at the same time. In order to complete the copper polymer separation the following techniques were employed. Counter current separation in water, static dense medium separation with zinc chloride solution and copper extraction with nitric acid and subsequent electrolytic deposition. A Tri-Flo® dynamic dense medium separator was employed in order to separate the lighter polymeric fraction, from the heavier polymeric fraction, mainly PVC. Water or a salt-water solution was employed to feed the separator device.

The slow-speed compressor is giving place to the high-speed type, with its greater economy of material and space; and, where very large units are required, the turbo-compressor is supplying the need. In the very large air-supply stations on the Rand, turbocompressor units of a capacity of 20,000 and even 50,000 cubic feet, requiring 4,000 to 13,000 horsepower, are quite a commercial proposition, and have proved a practical success. Air-compressors of this size are, however, very exceptional, and the high-speed reciprocating compressor is quite capable of dealing with the highest outputs so far required in this country and, in the hands of manufacturers experienced in the design of high-speed steam-engines, a very high standard of reliability and efficiency in operation is obtained. The so-called “high-speed” or more correctly quick-revolution type of compressor is now extensively used in mines and collieries; for the air-pressures required for power purposes in mining work, two-stage compression, with an intercooler between stages, is the design usually adopted in best practice. It is not the writer’s intention to describe a variety of high-speed air-compressors but to select as an example of this type of compressor the one with which he is most familiar, and which is probably more largely used than any other, namely, the double-acting two-cylinder two-crank type with automatic light-plate air-valves, and with the working parts lubricated on the forced-lubrication principle. Olivine contains higher MgO element, which can be added into blast furnace burden to improve slag stability and fluidity. Effect of calcined olivine and untreated olivine on low silicon pellet production process and quality was studied in this paper. The results shows, calcined olivine has no effect on bursting temperature of green pellet, however the bursting temperature of green pellet will decrease with increase of untreated olivine ratio. Untreated olivine has slight effect on green pellet strength than calcined olivine while the ratio is higher than 2%. The compressive strength of low silicon pellet will increase first and decrease afterwards with increases of calcined olivine ratio under firing temperature of 1250°C, whereas, the changing sequence is reverse fired under 1280°C. The result of untreated olivine pellet compressive strength is same as calcined olivine pellet. However, the compressive strength and metallurgical property of calcined olivine pellet is slightly higher than that of untreated olivine pellet under same condition.

A broad spectrum of tantalum containing input materials can be processed for the production of synthetic tantalum concentrate (“SynCon”). The use of these low grade substances offers a secure alternative to mining of coltan in Central Africa. SynCon is produced in a multi-stage pyrometallurgical process, wherefore the melting behaviour of slags presents an important factor especially regarding the energy consumption and its optimisation. The characteristics of a slag comprising mostly Al2O3, CaO, SiO2 and MgO are influenced by the amount of other oxidic constituents which enfolds the main focus of this study. A hot stage microscope serves for the investigation of the slag behaviour in a temperature range from 1000 to 1600 °C under reducing atmosphere (CO/CO2 gas). The experimental results are compared with thermodynamic calculations (FactSage) to get a better understanding of the process.

"The smoke nuisance, like many other undesirable and longstanding features in our present civilization, is still with us. On reviewing the situation we are astonished to find no authentic record of a major smoke-abatement campaign that has succeeded in eliminating a smoke nuisance, in spite of the fact that the problem has been with us since the use of bituminous coal began. We might well ask ourselves where the trouble lies; is the problem impossible of solution? We can not blame the average citizen for harboring this thought as a conviction. He has been urged for so long but sees so little evidence of progress. He has repeatedly been assured by the scientist and the engineer in most convincing terms that smoke. is unnecessary, that it can be avoided; small wonder is it that he is beginning to distrust so-called authority on the subject.On the other hand, the scientist and engineer are entirely within their rights. We all know that even high-volatile coal can be and is now being burned with no visible smoke. We know that even small domestic heating furnaces, with favorable conditions and with proper care, can be fired by hand without producing much smoke. And we know that when such equipment is fitted with suitable stoking devices, little or no smoke results. What, then, is the answer?Perhaps we may learn something from a critical examination of a typical smoke-abatement problem. Probably one of the most enlightening campaigns that has been waged in the United States is that of Salt Lake City, Utah; therefore, the purpose of this paper is to discuss the important aspects of this particular case."

High-voltage direct -current transmission is a relatively new technology. The successful development and operation of AC/DC converters, capable of handling large power blocks, have made HVDC transmission generally accepted by utility engineer s and planners around the world. HVDC technology still has significant development potential and, as a result, it is expected that equipment costs will escalate at a substantially slower rate than those of conventional AC equipment. This development will also result in still more compact terminal stations. This paper reviews two modern HVDC installations. In Zaire in Africa. a 1700-km overhead DC line rated at 500 kv, will supply power to the copper mining district in the Shaba region. Another HVDC link connects Norway and Denmark through a submarine cable rated at 250 kv. This is the longest HVDC cable in the world, 127 km, and the water depth , maximum 530 m, is also much greater than for any previous similar cable. The reasons for selecting HVDC are discussed, and the design and layouts are presented.

"Water quality and quantity at the Tailing Thickening Section of processing plants is considered to be a crucial factor and impacts the performance of several sections. Therefore, gaining stable and effective performance at the Tailing Thickener Section is one of the principal goals of minerals processing plants. Different factors such as: qualitative and quantitative sustainability of plant feed, the balance between the mass of input and output water flow, the dissolving method and distribution of flocculant and the amount of dirt, solid percent of thickener inlet pulp, affect the performance of Tailing Thickener. The present study investigates the successful improvement of Tailing Thickener performance at Jalal Abad Hematite Iron Ore Concentrate plant through optimizing the above operational parameters. For this purpose, the following optimizations have been done: homogeneity and sustainability of plant input feed rates, fine pulp removal collected by the bag filters at the input of the thickener, adding an quietness box before moving the tail pulp into the thickener to reduce the pulp turbulence, replacing flocculant pump and injection pipes, improving water mass balance which leads to optimizing and stabilizing the concentration of input tail pulp into the thickener, adding a mixer to increase the flocculant preparation time, increasing the locations for adding flocculant to thickener from 1 point to 6 points. Applying the above modifications and monitoring the Tailing Thickener performance over the course of months, has led to the improvement of recovered water quality from 500 ppm to 200 ppm, increasing the solid underflow of the thickener from 40% to 48.5%, and similarly, reducing water loss by 60%. Of other important effects, due to improvement of water quality, grade of final concentrate 0.5% increased and because of 73% increase in monthly working hour, concentrate tonnage 55% increased. Finally, sludge thickener optimization has had a significant effect in selecting and designing the dewatering system from the underflow of the sludge thickener."

Handheld XRF has become the favorite way of measuring the content and identity of alloys in the field. This is because of the very portable nature of the instrumentation and its simple operation. However, these analyzers have been unable to determine the concentration of the light elements like Mg and Si due to the very low energy of the x-rays produced by these elements. In the past accessories such as vacuum and He flush have given some analyzers the ability to determine these light elements with modest detection limits. The introduction of the Silicon Drift Detector (SDD) into this class of instrumentation has added a new level of analysis capability to portable XRF instrumentation. X-ray fluorescence is achieved by exciting a sample with a beam of x-rays, which in recent portable equipment are generated by a small tube. This results in the emission of characteristic x-rays from the sample under test. By measuring the energy of each x-ray it is possible to determine what element generated it. By counting the number of x-rays at each energy it is possible to determine the concentration of each element. The detection limit for each element is dependent upon the number of x-rays which reach the detector. As the number of x-rays increases the detection limit will improve. One of the major factors in an x-ray reaching the detector is the energy of the x-ray. As the energy of an x-ray increases the probability of that x-ray reaching the detector increases. The energy of an x-ray is inversely proportional to the atomic number (AN) of the element generating the x-ray. For example, an iron x-ray (AN=26) is 6.40 keV while an aluminum x-ray (AN=13) is 1.49 keV. As the energy decreases, the detection of the x-ray becomes less and less probable because the x-ray may be absorbed by the windows which are part of the instrument and detector or the air in the path between the sample and detector. In SiPIN based portable XRF analyzers, the lowest element which is detected with acceptable detection limits is normally considered to be Ti (AN=22). The detection limits for 60 second measurements on typical SiPIN XRF analyzer are given in Table I. Thus, portable analyzers have not been useful for measurement of aluminum and titanium alloys as major components of these alloys are Mg (AN=12), Al (AN=13) and Si (AN=14).

Efficient design of grinding circuits for efficient production of ultrafine material requires rapid feedback of information concerning the fineness of material leaving the grinding device. Generating this information requires efficient sampling and adequate rapid characterization of the material leaving the grinding machinery. Recent developments-in electrooptic inspection of dry end wet material leaving a grinding device are critically reviewed. New methods for characterizing ultrafines are discussed. A rapid operating automated cybernetic (intelligent) permeability device for automatic control of grinding circuits using Blaine index and other fineness indices is described.
