Circuit samples from the HBMS concentrator were assayed for l5elements, and image analysis was done to determine the modal quantities, grain size distributions and liberations of the minerals. Material balancing was done on these data to determine distributions of the minerals in each concentrator stream. The ore was mined during the waning phase of mining and is diluted with backfilled copper smelter slag. The mill feed grades 1.0 wt% Cu and 1.8 wt% Zn. The slag silicate phases contain approximately 1.5 wt% Cu and 6.5 wt% Zn; therefore the Cu and Zn head grades due to chalcopyrite and sphalerite, are only 0.9 wt% Cu and 1.2 wt% Zn, respectively. The recovery of Cu in the Cu-concentrate (Cu-conc.) is only 77.5 %, whereas that of chalcopyrite is 89.2 %. Similarly, the recovery of Zn in the Zn-concentrate (Zn-conc.) is only 40.2 %, whereas that of sphalerite is 71.0 %. The slag accounts for approximately 60 % of the Cu, and 85 % of the Zn in the tailings. The main loss of chalcopyrite is as unliberated grains to the tailings, and the main loss of sphalerite is as free grains to the Cu-concentrate and as unliberated grains to the Cu-concentrate and tailings. Approximately 85 % of the chalcopyrite and sphalerite lost to the tailings. accounting for 8 % and 10 % of the respective minerals in the concentrator feed, occur as middling and sub-middling grains. Extremely fine regrinding would be required to liberate these minerals.

The FeOX-CaO-SiO2 base slag at intermediate oxygen partial pressures is very often used in non-ferrous smelting processes. This slag would also contain Al2O3 and MgO because these compounds are normal components in the ore and the refractory of a furnace. The objective of the present work is to determine the effect of Al2O3 or MgO addition on the liquidus temperatures of the plain FeOX-CaO-SiO2 slags in the atmosphere between intermediate pO2 of 10-6 and that of iron saturation at 1250 and 1300 °C. The experiments were carried out at given mass%CaO/(mass%CaO+mass%SiO2) ratios ranging from 0 to 1 and at spinel-tridimite double saturation. The experimental results show that the effect of Al2O3 or MgO addition on the plain FeOX-SiO2-CaO slag is not uniform and depends on the content of Al2O3 or MgO, the oxygen partial pressure and the mass% CaO/mass% SiO2 ratio. It is apparent that Al2O3 or MgO addition enlarges the spinel or wustite saturation area at almost all the oxygen partial pressures and temperatures of this research. The obtained phase diagrams will be useful in the metallurgical industry to assist in the selection of slag chemistry, operation condition and development of new processes.

The paper covers the utilization of on-line analysis in process control of solvent extraction in nickel leach solvent extraction processes in Finland and Australia and in copper heap-leach and solvent extraction in Chile. The goals of and requirements for controlling the solvent extraction stages of the processes are reviewed. The applications at three plants are compared. The development of the technology used is reviewed and design considerations are discussed. Requirements for on-line control and analyzer performance are compared. A new generation of analyzers and its effect on the set-up process of a project is introduced.

This research aimed to develop a clean technology for the production of ZnO from residues generated by the steel making industry. Scientific and technologic parameters were both investigated in order to define an industrial methodology allowing the integral recycling of EAF dusts. A reengineering of the Waelz process was perform,~d, aiming to produce a clean fraction of ZnO, fluorine free, as well as a slag enriched in metallic iron, which can be recycled in electric arc furnaces. The technical conditions used to produce the ultra pure fraction of ZnO are described. The magnetic separation of the EAF dust allowing the production of a phase high in iron and recyclable to the electric arc furnace is also discussed. Thermodynamic of the volatilization of all the elements contained in the EAF dust was performed in order to better control the thermal process in the rotary kiln. Tests were run using different reducing agents, weakly or highly reactive, aiming to determine their specific efficiency.

"During an annual inventory of nuclear material, a plated steel container which contained plutonium oxide failed. The container had been packaged for temporary storage but had been overlooked and remained in storage for more than 23 years. Although it was determined that the failure occurred through the slip-top rim, a metallurgical evaluation was requested to help to determine the integrity of the container.Optical metallography and scanning electron microscopy were used to analyze the character and degree of corrosion in the container. The depth of corrosion, measured at approximately 10 µm, did not pose a threat to the integrity of the container. However, the corrosion morphology and chemistry did suggest that a galvanic cell had developed between the tin and steel from the condensation of water. The morphology also suggests that the attack of the steel took place over a series of cycles due to changes of the environment.IntroductionMetallographic analysis was requested as part of the investigation into the mechanism of the failure of a slip-top container (#38621) containing plutonium oxide (PuO2) powder. The container had leaked during a special nuclear material (SNM) annual inventory causing contamination and closure of the vault. A photograph of the container and interior container is shown on the right in Figure 1. An initial investigation established that the source of contamination was the consequence of the failure of multiple layers of containment. Initially by the deterioration of the interior plastic bottle and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) bagout bag, and finally through the lid and steel container interface at a location where tape had not adhered properly [1]. Although the source of the breach was established, it was determined that metallographic analysis was important to establish the extent of deterioration of the steel container."

R & D works supported by industrial-scale tests, which were carried out by joint efforts of the OAO Gipronickel Institute and MMC ?Kola? engineers, have accomplished with the production of 90?95% metallized nickel powder in tube furnaces (NPTF), with its ?active fraction? (AF) to be further used for decopperization of nickel electrolyte by cementation. Consistently positive results obtained in the course of the lab and industrial experiments have allowed the Severonickel Combine management to effectively replace all activated nickel powder (ANP), which was then employed for cementation, with the AF, having activity over 80%, and eventually shut down the entire operation of gaseous reduction. Ever since the developed technology has been implemented, its annual economic effect exceeds 2 ml. dollars.

The most probable source of Pb contamination in the perennial reach of Aravaipa Creek, Arizona, has been determined using Pb isotope ratios and total metals analyses of samples collected from the ephemeral and perennial reaches and mine wastes located in the Aravaipa Mining District . Previously, elevated levels of Pb, Cd and As in fish in the perennial reach of Aravaipa Creek, a protected wilderness area,, were assumed to be due to off-site transport from abandoned flotation tailings piles located at Klondyke, Arizona upstream of the wilderness area.Our work replaces this inference with isotopic data that allows us to confirm this hypothesis. The Pb/Zn deposits of the district were mined between the late 1890s and the late1960s, with the most significant ore production coming from one deposit in a rhyolite dike swarm on the Western front of the Santa Teresa Mountains, a granitic pluton of Cretaceous-Tertiary age (~65 ma). Mineralogy has been well constrained across the length of the lode system: Pb and Zn sulfides predominate in the NW sector, and a mixed suite of hypogene/supergene Pb sulfide and Pb oxide minerals comprises the majority of its SE corner. Total metals analyses and comparison of metals ratios serve to constrain the source and transport of certain metals within different parts of the system. Pb isotope ratios in samples, obtained by ICP-MS analysis, define two distinct contributors. The first end-member (208Pb/204Pb = 38.513 to 38.721 and 207Pb/204Pb= 15.550 to 15.598) is characteristic of the mixed, oxide/sulfide ores at the SE end of the deposit. A second end-member (208Pb/204Pb = 38.855 to 38.946 and 207Pb/204Pb = 15.610 to 15.625) characterizes samples taken from the NW, purely Pb sulfide end of the lode. Pb isotope ratios from perennial reach sediments are closely correlated with ratios given by samples from the Klondyke tailings site and by Pb sulfide samples from the NW sector, the primary source of ores processed at Klondyke.

In the primary and secondary copper industry the anode furnace is the most important process step in the refining procedure to reach an enhancement in value and quality of the copper by a selective oxidation and reduction. By combining the advantages of the conventional tilting hearth anode furnace and the benefits of the drum type anode furnace a new aggregate was developed and patented. The cross-section of the furnace is elliptical and the whole unit is tiltable. During the melting period, the contact surface between the burners and the bath or the scarp is enlarged - an increased energy input is the consequence. For the refining period the furnace is rotated, whereby a high bath level is guaranteed. Due to the longer residence time of the gas in the copper melt, not only the gas consumption is reduced but also the efficiency/quality of the refining process is improved. This investigation shows a metallurgical comparison between the new anode furnace concept with the elliptical profile/cross section and the conventional, tiltable hearth anode furnace as well as the drum type anode furnace. The CFD modeling of the currents in these different furnaces delivered helpful data to compare the geometry of the different furnaces. The investigation covered the refining of blister copper from primary metallurgy, from secondary metallurgy as well as from a mixture of both copper melts. The paper underlines the possibilities for a reduction of the tap-to-tap time and for an increase in production capacity, which can be achieved by applying the new furnace concept in comparison to the conventional furnaces.

This paper describes the aluminum electrowinning in a batch recirculation cell system using 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride and aluminum chloride (ionic liquids) as electrolyte at low temperatures. The technique proposed to deposit aluminum from ionic liquid electrolyte was a three-component electrolytic cell system. Ionic liquid electrolyte was circulated between electrolytic cell and electrolyte reservoir by ceramic piston pump. Two different anodes were used in the electrowinning and it was found the extruded carbon anode had better electrochemical stability and reusability. The cell performance variables studied were the current density and current efficiency as a function of aluminum ion concentration, electrolyte flow rate and applied cell voltage during batch recirculation operation. Results indicated that the current density was directly proportional to the applied cell voltage, initial electrolyte concentration and electrolyte flow rate. Under batch recirculation operation at applied voltage of 3.5 V and temperature of 80-90°C, 80-90% current efficiency of cathodic aluminum deposition can be achieved when flow rate is 20mL/min and initial concentration is 10 mol/L.

Gold-copper alloys are shown to form during the cementation of gold on copper in a solution containing 0.25M [S2O32-] at 25oC. The alloy composition is strongly dependent on the initial Cu:Au ratio in solution and ranges from Au3Cu to AuCu3. XPS results for Au, Cu, S, and O are reported as a function of depth through an entire deposited film with an initial solution containing 20 ppm [Au] and 30 ppm [Cu]. The deposit contained about 20 atomic % gold and was predominantly Cu3Au. Underpotential deposition (UPD) theory is discussed as a mechanism for explaining the formation of these alloys. Several other systems that produce alloys during contact reduction/cementation are also discussed.

The Kidd Creek base metal deposit near Timmins, Ontario contains around 0.15 wt% Sn, mainly as cassiterite. The cassiterite occurs largely as inclusions in sphalerite, with 85% being in grains smaller than 18.5 micrometres in diameter. Concentrates and tails from the company's Cu, Pb and Zn circuits were studied to determine the liberations and recoveries of cassiterite in the products. The ore had been ground to about 65.% minus 44 micranetres in diameter (-325 mesh); 55% of the cassiterite was liberated. About 92% of the liberated cassiterite and 70% of the unliberated cassiterite were in the concentrator tails, and 20% of the unliberated cassiterite in the zinc concentrate. The company had attempted to recover the cassiterite from the concentrator tails by gravitational methods but recoveries were low. The grain size of the cassiterite in the gravity Sn concentrate was similar to the grain size of the liberated cassiterite in the concentrator tails. Research on flotation of the fine grained cassiterite from Kidd Creek ore has been conducted,

"Environmental management is one of the industry cornerstones of sustainable development. In order to understand fully the environmental aspects associated with the raw material acquisition, production, use, and end-of-life operations of aluminium products, the Aluminium Industry has developed an approach based on Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) methodology.Within this framework, the Primary Aluminium Industry has established a global Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) data set. Inventory flows include inputs of raw materials, energy and water, emissions to air and water, and solid waste.This paper presents the latest LCI data update by the International Aluminium Institute for the year 2010, based on a survey of aluminium plants globally, including bauxite mining, alumina refining, anode production, electrolysis and casting. This update also includes some performance tracking based on the last LCI data collection in 2005, reflecting progress in efficiency and technology, as well as changes in the geographical location of the industry [2010 data pending]. IntroductionIn 2010 the Primary Aluminium Industry produced a total of 41 Mt of aluminium. The International Aluminium Institute (IAI) membership represents approximately 70% of total global production. The industry recognises the importance of co=itting to reducing the environmental impacts of producing primary aluminium, and the significance of working towards a more sustainable future. As part of this co=itment the IAI has developed an in depth Life Cycle Inventory programme, in which data is collected every five years, with supplementary key metrics collected annually.In 2003 the IAI released its first Report ""Life Cycle Assessment of Aluminium: Inventory Data for the Worldwide Primary Aluminium Industry"" based on the year 2000 with an update Report released in 2007, based on 2005 data.This paper presents the latest update for the year 2010 [2010 data pending]. It has been prepared with the same view of collecting all significant Life Cycle Inventory data (raw materials and energy use, air and water emissions and solid waste generated) associated with producing primary aluminium ingot from bauxite ore, with worldwide coverage. The intended purpose of the Inventory Report is to accurately characterize resource consumption and significant environmental aspects associated with the worldwide production of primary aluminium. It reflects the fuct that primary aluminium is a globally traded co=odity."

A survey of world copper refining tankhouse .practices has been carried out. This paper compiles the results and examines changes in operating practices .since the similar 1987, 1991 and 1995 surveys. Continuing trends are the installation of ISA Process and Kidd Process stainless steel cathode technology, polymer concrete cells, anode preparation machines and automatic cranes. Instrumentation and automatic control are increasing, particularly for addition agent optimization; solvent extraction .and ion exchange techniques are being increasingly applied for electrolyte purification. The overall consequences of these changes have been 'improved cathode purities and enhanced tankhouse productivities.

Two electrochemical processing methodologies have been used to electrogenerate bromine-laden solutions for gold-leaching purposes. In the first process, a laboratory-scale cell in which the anode and cathode compartments were separated by a cation-exchange membrane was employed. The bromine produced by electrolysis of a 4% bromide solution was used to leach gold from a low-grade ore. The pregnant leach solution was then returned to the cell to recommence the cycle. High current efficiencies (90-93%) were maintained over six cycles. In the second process, an undivided hypochlorite generating cell (Chloropac"') was used to generate bromine from a simulated leach solution. Electrolyses were performed on a pilot-scale (100-150 gallons) with solutions containing different levels of bromide ion. The current efficiencies were also high (80-90%) and unaffected by the bromide concentration (over the range 2.5-5%) provided the electrolysis was run to low conversion « 15%). The Chloropac module was capable of delivering 0.6 kg bromine per hour at a power cost of $0.09 per kg. Using these figures, a detailed economic assessment for a 1000 metric tonnes (MT) per day gold ore processing plant was made. Electrolytic regeneration of bromine in a gold leach/recovery circuit dramatically improves the process economics over cyanidation.

"Electroless plating process has been used in many fields such as automobile and electronic industries. Solutions used in these processes must be disposed or treated. Commonly, in these solutions metal ions, organic materials and others chemicals are in very high concentration. It is very difficult to keep the environmental regulations for disposal of these materials, and the cost of the plating process becomes higher.The objective of this study was to investigate the recovery of components of those baths in order to decrease the cost of the plating process as well as to meet the environmental regulation.In this study the recovery metal ions, sulfate ions, phosphite ions and organic compounds were investigated. Organic compounds used in electroless plating solutions are the organic acids. In this work the solvent extraction of the most used organic acids included citric, lactic, succinic, tartaric and malic was studied. The solvent phase considered in these studies was ethyl acetate.About 95% of the metal ion was recovered by chemical plating onto mica powder. The hypophosphite remained is oxidized to phosphite and with the sulfate ion, both are recovered as calcium salts by selective precipitation in pH 7 and 2 respectively. Organic acids were recovered by solvent extraction using ethyl acetate as solvent phase and the best results were for lactic acid and succinic acid.Along with this study, was developed the analytical parameters to perform wastewater analysis by using Ion Chromatography, High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Fourrier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Ion chromatography was used to perform analysis of sulfate and phosphite ions in liquid matrix, HPLC was used to perform analysis of organic acids in liquid matrix and FTIR was used for characterization of the solids obtained in the recovery processes."

"A new pyrometallugical technology, named KLS process, has been developed by Dowa Mining at its Kosaka Smelter to smelt various kinds of lead raw materials.The process consists of clearly separated two reaction steps, smelting and reduction. For this purpose, respective stationary furnaces are installed which are connected by a slag launder.Dry raw materials, together with pulverized coal and oxygen-enriched air, are injected through a lance pipe into the molten slag in the first furnace. It is kept under a high oxygen potential to remove sulfur completely. Resultant PbO rich slag overflows to the second furnace where pulverized coal and insufficient air are also injected through a lance pipe to reduce PbO to lead bullion and to compensate for thermal deficit. The entire operation is carried out continuously. The process development started back in 1981. In late 1986, a pilot plant with a capacity of 3.5t/H was constructed.Already nearly 20,000 tons of raw materials, mostly lead sulfate mixtures have been smelted successfully.IntroductionFor a long time, main raw materials for lead smelting at Kosaka smelter have been such secondary incombustibles as lead sulfate and lead-barium sulfate. The former is leach residue of the copper smelter flue dust and the latter originates from Iijima zinc refinery. While the most of lead concentrates produced locally has been smelted by an ISF of Hachinohe smelter in which Dowa Mining has a share.The surplus lead concentrates were processed at Kosaka by a hydrometallurgical method to convert PbS to PbSO 4 as pretreatment, and followed by simultaneous smelting together with the above secondary materials (1). Approximate output has been 1,5000 /M of lead bullion and slightly more than 2,000t/M of refined lead by adding lead bullion returned back from Hachinohe smelter (2)."
