My talk today is an effort to project our thinking forward a few years to that point in the future when we will be producing gas and liquid fuels from coal. To those of you that are concerned with meeting today's production quota--my remarks may sound like a Buck Rogers projection. Not so. Although I'm talking about the future, please understand that my thoughts are focused on the near term future. The coal plant of the future will be an energy plant producing energy products to meet the needs of our modern society. This plant is an outgrowth of Government- industry cooperation. Much of the research work that makes such a plant possible was jointly funded, other work was a continuation into development of private research expenditures, other work was performed by private research organizations with Government funding, other work was performed in Government laboratories, both State and Federal. As indicated above, and in the title of my talk, I expect to describe the coal plant of the future. I will describe a plant producing Carbon, Oil, Pipeline gas, and Electricity--Project COPE. This plant copes with the Atomic-Nuclear Group. As stated above, this plant is an energy plant. Energy plants today are large-scale operations. Power plants of 5,000 megawatts are projected, refineries of 500,000 daily barrels are near term probabilities, 48" transcontinental gas pipelines are with us today and 25,000 daily ton mines are here as well. The COPE plant will be of the same general size and require 50,000 - 100,000 tons of coal per day.

Last summer Larry Miller of Roberts & Schaefer told me that his AIME committee would like me to present some thoughts on the marketing of industrial mineral fillers and pigments to this illustrious group in Las Vegas. Shortly after, Brian Coupe of "Industrial Minerals" (the magazine) notified me that I would be presenting a paper to the Fourth International Industrial Minerals Congress in Atlanta this June. It seems to me now it might have been more appropriate to reverse the papers. Las Vegas, a town based on risk, might want to hear what we have to say in Atlanta. The subject for June is "Risk Philosophies of U. S. Industrial Minerals Companies". However, upon reflection, marketing of industrial minerals reflects risk philosophies to a considerable extent, so we'll cut the deck and deal on the subject of marketing.

As production of ground limestone increased our Company found it had an enviromental problem with limestone dust from our hammer mills. With the quarry and processing plant situated within 1 klm of a small township of 5000 people dust collection became essential. Regulations under the Clean Air Act 1972 also had to be complied with. Prior to this any demand for lime flour had been met by the use of a small drier and ball mill. Both expensive to operate. Dust emitting from the mills would amount to over 4000 tonnes per year. The cost savings were obvious. We had a better product which was essentially a by-product. Faced with a surplus of a very useful, but difficult product to handle we considered the possibility of disposing of it on the agricultural market.

If Campbell County, Wyoming were an independent nation, it would rank fifth in the world among countries with known coal reserves. Only the United States, Russia, mainland China and West Germany would have greater volumes available. Not too many years ago that statement would not have seemed important, because oil and natural gas had become our nation's principal fuels. Western coal deposits, particularly those of the Powder River Basin in Montana and Wyoming, and which underlie virtually all of Campbell County, were largely unknown. But recently, in response to the three-pronged stimulus of vanishing gas reserves, rising petroleum prices, and clean environment statutes, these vast deposits have been delineated and have become, in the minds of many, indispensable to our goal of energy independence. Not only does western coal lie in thick seams near the surface where it can be mined in huge quantities at low cost, but also it possesses another coveted attribute in this age of environmentalism: low sulfur content. At Burlington Northern we count ourselves at the forefront of those who believe this coal is essential to any hope for the government's "Project Independence." But to that belief we add another article of faith. We are convinced the economics of unit train delivery of this incredibly immense resource make it the only transportation system that can help us achieve energy self-sufficiency in this country.

The methodology and results of a feasibility study of an Automatic Truck Dispatching (ATD) system in an actual open pit mining operation, are presented. Using mine cost data, an economic analysis confirms that capital and operating cost savings with ATD out-weigh the costs. Productivity improvement achievable with ATD is quantified with a computer simulation of truck haulage based on mine production and operational data.

Most magnesia, MgO, whether of natural or synthetic origin, is utilized in its dead burned or periclase form as refractory linings for the production of steel. Continued research in refractory science combined with good refractory maintenance and improvements in steel making practice have resulted in decreased use of magnesia. To make up for this loss of business producers of synthetic magnesia have started to manufacture a variety of magnesium based chemicals that are utilized in many diverse industries and applications.

With the price of precious metals at an 18-year low, every ounce of metal produced is important. The theft of metals from mining and refining sites can mean the diffrence between profit and loss for many mining companies. Low metal prices do not reduce the potential for the theft of precious metals. History has shown that the price of gold has little to do with the desire for employees to steal precious or base metals. There is actually evidence that the theft of precious metals increases when the price of this commodity goes down. Several of the major precious metal thefts in the past year took place at silver mines when the price of silver was less than 16 cents/g ($5/oz). How does the lowest gold price in 18 years affect the need for security at precious metals properties? There is no short answer to this question. One reason is because the exposure to theft of precious metals is unique to each property. This makes it important that each property be evaluated individually. More than 95% of all precious metals thefts can be attributed to those working at the mine site. So preventing employee theft is the primary concern. One consideration is the location of the property. Gold selling at any price is still an attractive commodity in countries where the employees are making between US$400 and US$600 a month. It is not uncommon for employees at mines in countries where low wages are the norm to consider the value of a gram or two of gold to be a significant amount of money. A gram or two of gold a day may not seem like much. But if 15 employees steal two grams a day, that equates to a significant amount of money during a year. The type of property where the precious metals product is being recovered is also important. For example, a property with a gravity circuit is more likely to suffer from the theft of gold product than a property where all gold is finely disseminated and the only gold seen in the ore body is through a microscope. Gravity circuits increase an operation's exposure to theft because the grinding circuit that is associated with a gravity circuit often becomes a giant concentrator. Areas such as the bottom of grinding-mill pump boxes, cyclone-feed-pump clean out traps and the sumps often become locations where precious metals concentrate (Figs. 1 and 2). Muck concentrations in these locations can be as high as 25% to 40% of gold or silver. Not long ago, muck was removed from a barren-solution sump at a Merrill Crowe circuit that had concentrated to more than 40% gold. At a milling site in the Pacific Rim, residents of the community adjacent to the mine learned about the value of the concentrates in the sump under the ball mill and committed an armed rob¬bery. While several of their co-conspirators held the em¬ployees at bay with machetes, the others emptied the contents of the sump into buckets and removed it from the site. Armed robbery is not as common as employee theft. However, while this article was being written, an armed robbery occurred at a gold property in Central America. Armed perpetrators took as hostages the night shift employees at a process plant and used cutting torches that were on site to cut into the high-security and gold-storage areas. The perpetrators then stole a company vehicle to remove the stolen gold buttons and sludge from the site. Unfortunately, this type of activity goes on regularly. But managements of most mining companies are reluctant to discuss theft scenarios. So information pertaining to the theft of precious metals seldom becomes a newsworthy item. An audit conducted at a mine site with a gravity circuit recommended that the gravity recovery area be shut down until adequate protection could be provided. Although it was not connected with the audit, it was necessary to shut down the gravity area for a pro¬longed period because of problems with the gravity table. In the two months that followed, gold production at the site increased by about 31 kg/month (1,000 oz/month). It is difficult to attribute all of this increase to the theft of concentrates. But there was a good chance that at least part of the increase was due to the fact that concentrates were being stolen from the gravity area.

Traditional or artisanal goldmining, also known as small scale goldmining, has a strong and probably a negative environmental impact. The processing methods applied are very frequently a source of severe pollution due to the emissions of mercury by the extraction of gold by means of amalgamation as well as the emissions of cyanide through cyanide leaching of gold bearing ores. The emissions find their way into the environment and contaminate soils, sediments, water and atmosphere. Abnormal concentrations of mercury and cyanides in waterways are known to occur year after year destroying irreplaceable regions of the world. Mercury and cyanide compounds are highly toxic and may directly create permanent damage to the whole ecosystem. Existing methods for recycling of mercury and for decontamination of mercury and cyanide contaminated tailings are not customary applied in small scale mining and are ineffective as well. Based on investigations of traditional and small size goldmining, this paper presents: -processing methods of gold and discarded tailings under consideration of environmental protection; -figures on actual situation; -recommendations for equipment; -some decontamination methods for mercury and residual cyanide. Mineral Processing methods in traditional gold mining Gold is usually existing in its ores as the metal alloyed with metallic silver and perhaps copper. The element may occur in the form of: -native gold -inclusions also of microns or submicroscopic size metal sulfides (auriferous) such as pyrite, pyrrhotite, stibnite, arsenopyrite and galena -combined as telluride or sulphotelluride. The separation process selected depends on whether the gold can be freed from its unfavorable associations (e.g. gangue) at a sufficiently coarse grain-size, or whether it is carried in a heavy sulfide which can be freed similarly. The usual practice is to concentrate the goldbearing mineral at a relatively coarse grain-size and to regrind the ore if necessary. The gold content is concentrated by secondary or tertiary gravital methods or is extracted by chemical methods (amalgamation, cyanidation etc.) Gold, even when of fine grain-size, settle readily due to its high specific gravity from pulps in which the main gangue mineral is quartz or silicates. Amalgamation is the process of separating gold and silver from their associated minerals by binding (entrapping) them into a mixture with mercury. The cyanide process is applied to separate gold or gold-bearing compounds by dissolution from the finely ground ore (CIP, CIL, RIP), or as heap leaching. The dissolved gold is separated from the solids and the metal-rich or pregnant solution is then treated to recover its gold. Gold is also recovered by flotation methods. This process is widely used in treating base metal ores and in separating various sulfide components of ores, as well as in removing the barren gangue. The gold usually associates with a specific product in a sequence of flotation operations and is recovered subsequently in the smelting of the sulfide concentrates and refining of the metallic products, or by cyanidation of the roasted concentrates. Froth-flotation can be applied to separate gold and sulfide minerals from a finely ground pulp. The Amalgamation Process Amalgamation is the main method for the recovery of gold in traditional mining and is applied for the extraction of gold from placers as well as primary ores. The mineral technology used depends on the nature of ore deposits. In winning gold from solid ore, the matrix of minerals and rocks must be crushed and ground to sufficient fineness to liberate the gold. The liberated gold could be treated similar as free gold from placers. Gold is mainly separated from the valueless gangue (barren rock) by utilizing the difference between the density of the impure native metal (density about 16-19) and the gangue (density about 2.5). In simple operations the material is carried by a stream of water down a sluice generally equipped with small transverse barriers (riffles) against which the gold collects. The riffled sluice is the principal device used by artisanal gold miners. Nowadays, spirals as well as centrifuges, such as Knelson separator or Falcon separator, are occasionally applied for gold recovery. Gold may also be recovered from the pulp, by passing it over corduroycovered tables that catch the heavier particles - a method maybe as ancient as gold mining itself. Texas Utilities Generating Company (TUGCo) surface mines lignite for use as a boiler fuel at mine mouth generation stations. Currently, the annual lignite production requirement of approximately 28 million tons necessitates mining across approximately 1,600 surface acres each year. The mining operations, located in Freestone, Panola, Titus, and Hopkins counties, Texas, have drastically disturbed some 13,000 surface acres to depths of up to 110 feet since initial startup in 1971. The TUGCo mining philosophy, a commitment made prior to initiation of mining operations and prior to any mining regulations, includes a return of mined-out land to private ownership in the most useful state possible. In the areas of TUGCo operations, the local economies are based upon agricultural production. Historic land use surveys have typically shown a trend from row crop production to pastureland for cattle production. During the 1960?s, the percentage of acreage devoted to row crop production approached zero with respect to the total acreage devoted to agriculture. TUGCo reclamation operations have therefore emphasized restoration of land to a state that is favorable to cattle production

Potassium, together with nitrogen and phosphorous, is one of the essential nutrients required for growth. All living things need potash and so the major demand for potash (approximately 95% of, total demand) is as a fertilizer. Traditional agricultural techniques relied on the return of organic materials to the soil to provide nutrient requirements and maintain soil fertility, and the prevailing low crop yields required little in the way of added fertilizers. But agricultural productivity has increased dramatically in recent times, and this increase in crop yields requires substantial amounts of added nutrients to keep the soil fertile. It follows that there will always be a demand for potash. There is no substitute. Other fertilizers that contain N and P are complementary and not competing products.

Silica sand has been mined in Illinois from the St. Peter Sandstone since the turn of the century, especially in the area around Ottawa on the Illinois River in the north-central part of the state. Production of this sand, consumed mainly by the glass and foundry industries but also sought after for many other uses, has grown with the economy, and last year's output in Illinois exceeded 4,000,000 tons. Such an important commodity was given the early attention of the Illinois State Geological Survey, and a very complete report was issued in 1928, authored by J. E. Lamar. The mining and processing of the sand has changed very little during the intervening 40 years, so that much of Lamar's data and descriptions are applicable today. More recently, the stratigraphy of the St. Peter Sandstone in north-central Illinois has become better known from the work of Willman and Payne (1942). The present authors have borrowed generously from Lamar's publication, and we wish to acknowledge the contribution of both of these studies to our work.

Prior to 1971, there were several clinical trials to evaluate programs for early detection of lung cancer. Among these, the Philadelphia Pulmonary Neoplasm Research Project,(3) the Veterans Administration Study published by Lilienfeld,(7) and the controlled trial of the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan showed an overall five year survival rate of 8% for newly detected cases (the same as the national statistic for unscreened patients). In 1971, the National Cancer Institute initiated three randomized, controlled mortality studies using lung cancer screening of persons at high risk (male smokers over 45 years old). The studies are being conducted at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital, the Mayo Clinic, and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. The studies have slightly different designs in the combination of sputum cytology and chest x-rays. At the Mayo Clinic the study group is offered screening with sputum cytology and chest x-rays every four months, whereas the control group is advised to have an x-ray and cytology every year. No reminders are sent, and it is believed that only about 20% of the control group is screened. At Johns Hopkins and Memorial, both experimental and control groups are offered annual chest x-rays. The experimental group is additionally offered sputum cytology every four months.(5) At present all of the programs show that screening can detect cancers that are undetectible by other means. However, at this time mortality rates in the control and experimental groups are not significantly different in any of the three studies. OUR PROGRAM Our clinic is located in Grants, New Mexico and we provide most of the pre-employment physical examinations for the mines operating in the Grants area (Kerr McGee Nuclear, Homestake Mining, United Nuclear, Western Nuclear, and Ranchers). In the examinations, we obtain the previous mining history of the worker, a chest x-ray, a sample of sputum for cytological examination, and a blood sample. We also provide routine annual physical examinations of the workers, with special interest in the detection of bronchogenic carcinoma. In the early seventies, we did not have a definite surveillance program. We did not know whether we should have a program like the one started at Memorial or like the one started at the Mayo Clinic. After long consideration, we decided to have a program that does not demand a sputum cytology and chest x-ray every four months, but that allows as many chest x-rays and sputum cytologies as needed to diagnose lung cancer as early as possible. We believe that, if a screening method for cancer is to be optimally effective, it must detect the process at stages early enough for curative therapy. We order a test depending on the age of the miner, the race, the mining history, the smoking history, the radiation exposure levels, and the results of the previous chest x-ray and sputum cytology. With the help of the computer, we have a list of all the miners who should be watched closely because of age, race, mining history, smoking history, radiation exposure, etc. Examination of the miners is performed at our clinic, where all the records are kept. The sputum is collected there but examined in Grand Junction, Colorado, by Dr. Geno Saccomanno. There are two ways to collect sputum. The best way is to collect three consecutive morning samples. For this, we need the cooperation of the miners. They have to follow these instructions and mail the bottle containing the sample to Grand Junction. "Instructions for obtaining a good cough specimen" The enclosed plastic bottle contains a preservative solution, so do not empty out the liquid in it. When you go to bed, place the plastic bottle at your bedside where it will be handy in the morning. When you first get up in the morning (before breakfast) try to cough up some "phlegm" from deep in your chest, and spit it into the liquid in the bottle. Try coughing several times. If you have difficulty coughing, try inhaling deeply the steam from a teakettle (or home-type inhalator). Keep the amount of saliva (ordinary spit) that you put into the bottle along with the cough specimen as small as possible. Do not collect the "phlegm" or mucous that comes from the back of your nose. Put the cap back on the bottle, and shake it vigorously for two minutes. If the amount of material you have coughed up is quite small, then keep the bottle at your bedside for three or four days, and each morning try to add another cough specimen. After obtaining your cough specimen, repack the bottle in the mailing container, and attach the enclosed mailing label. It does not require any postage stamps. Unfortunately, some miners "forget" to mail the sample and end up with an incomplete physical examination. To avoid this some companies, like Homestake, request that we obtain the sample in our clinic by forcing cough and expectorant with a nebulizer machine. This method does not give as good a sputum sample as the previous one, but we do get a sputum sample for every miner. The only known attapulgite clay deposits of any considerable extent and purity in the United States are roughly bisected by the Georgia. Florida state line between Decatur County, southwest Georgia, and Gadsden County, northwest Florida. Although attapulgite clay occurrences both farther East and South are known and have been mined to some extent in the past, at the present time it can be said that substantially: all of the commercial attapulgite clay mining and pro¬cessing is concentrated in a roughly rectangular area some 25 miles long by 15 miles wide,, in the general region of Attapulgus, Georgia, and of Quincy and Havana, Florida. Within this area are located the clay processing plants of the four major producers as well as most, if not all, of the currently active mining operations. The approximate location of the plants and of some of the open mines are shown in the local area map, Figure No. 1, for the purpose of orientation only.

During the past year the news media has come in for its share of criticism. Some of it, without doubt, is justified. Much of it, like that which has been leveled against some of the rest of us, is not. We can sympathize with the newspapers and magazines, the radio and television stations. Like the coal industry, which I represent, they are a part of the free enterprise system. They depend upon advertising for their existence, and advertisers patronize those media which reach the most people interested in their product. The various news media are therefore In avid competition for circulation. Although they do have an unquestioned influence on the public, they are primarily a reflection of the public and it is in this context that we will consider them. Granted that this reflection is sometimes a bit distorted, let us admit that any subject which does not strike a responsive chord In the public will soon be dropped by the media.

Considerable amounts of Fe3+ ions are released into solution when coal is exposed to 1-3 M acid solutions. These ions superficially oxidize the coal surface, and are reduced to Fe2+ ions. When provisions are made to generate the Fe3+ ions in solution, e.g., by inserting an anode whose potential is above the reversible potential for the Fe3+/Fe2+ couple, considerable amounts of mineral matter are liberated from the coal matrix. With many eastern U.S. bituminous coals, this mineral liberation is achieved selectively without significant breakage of the coal. It is believed that this process is induced by the osmotic pressure set-up in the crevices between the mineral matter and coal that are exposed to the solution. A theoretical model predicting the osmotic pressure is presented in this work, along with some results obtained with different coal samples.

Somebody sure gave me the wrong title. I can talk much more freely about the impact of the anti-nuclear movement on the DRILLING industry in New Mexico. In a word, it is being "clobbered." It doesn't seem like very long ago that my brothers and I were busy trying to find enough new equipment (and trying to talk bankers into lending us enough money) to keep up with drilling work we could get. Seemed like no matter how hard we worked, and how much money we borrowed, we were always one step behind where we wanted to be. We had so many holes to drill that all our crews were working three shifts a day, and over several states. The nation needed energy, and we were ready to help supply it. Exploration and development drilling jobs were all going full-blast. We had trouble keeping up with them. With luck, we figured we'd be able to get all our equipment out of hock before all the necessary uranium mines were developed.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to secure local aggregate resources that meet quality standards and local restrictions without conflicts with other land uses and environmental regulations. The successful integration of natural-resource information into land-use decisions is becoming increasingly important as the needs for both land and resources become more numerous, complex and urgent. Well-reasoned decisions about land-use are crucial to the Nation if infrastructure resources are to remain economically available. Provisions for uninterrupted future supplies of aggregate should be made using proper long-range planning that incorporate a multiple land-use program. That program would include identification and protection of natural resources, strategies that will permit development of resources according to future market needs and environmental considerations, and the beneficial reclamation of mined-out areas.

Boom, boom, boom, boom. The staccato beat rings out across the bush; the stamps are at work - slowly pulverizing gold-bearing ore for a patient, grizzled prospector. This is the State Battery near Marvel Loch - a tiny (capacity: 25 ton/day) gold plant operated by the Western Australian government. It is one of many such plants located in remote corners of Western Australia and the Northern Territory - miniature custom mills operated for the benefit of prospectors and small mine operators. These State Batteries, so called because they are operated by state governments and because the principal item of machinery in the plants are stamp batteries, are fascinating anachronisms: throwbacks to times long past, to a century ago, to the hard and heady existence of gold rush days.

It is a pleasure to have the opportunity of being here today to discuss the application of horizontal filters in the metallurgical industries. The use of horizontal type filters has been limited in metallurgical plants. However, in the recent past there have been new designs of this type equipment which greatly broaden their field of application. Through their use in many applications, important economies can be achieved over more conventional methods. The first of the modern continuous horizontal filters was initially developed by Oliver United Filters as their scroll type horizontal filter. This was an outgrowth of the old Oliver Sand Table that was limited to very coarse, free filtering pulps containing no appreciable amount of fine particles. The sand table was rather limited in application. The later continuous scroll type horizontal filter provided for a reverse air blow after discharge which reslurried the heel remaining and permitted the filtration of pulps containing finer particles. In the manufacture of phosphoric acid by the ?wet? process, the filtration of gypsum from the strong acid presented an extremely difficult filtration problem due to blinding of the filter media caused by crystallization of the soluble salts contained in the acid. A filter which allowed for continuous cloth washing was required, and this led to the development of the continuous pan type, and travelling belt type horizontal filters which provided for this need. Among the filters developed were the Prayon by Engineering and Industrial Corporation of Luxembomg for use in their phosphoric acid plants. They are one of the largest manufacturers of phosphoric acid in Europe. The Dorr-Oliver Traveling Pan Filter was also developed by Mario Giorgini, Manager of Dorr-Oliver?s Italian subsidiary, for use with the Dorr Company?s phosphoric acid process. Basically, there are four existing types of horizontal filters in commercial use at this time: The scroll discharge non-pan type, the continuous belt type (Lurgi), rotary pan type, and the traveling belt type. The construction and principle of operation of these various filters will be discussed.
