Due to variation in the geological natures of underground coal mines, especially when the entry?s roof/floor are soft and weak, it is vital to select an appropriate roof bolting system to ensure entry stability, coal production, and miner?s safety. No single type of roof bolting system perfectly fits for various types of openings, even within a mine. From the results of continuous research on roof bolting in the past 10 years, the authors used a novel concept of ?Self-screwed? mechanism to develop five types of roof bolting under a patented Self-screwed Tube Bolting System (STBS)©. This roof tube bolting system can be applied to meet different timing-strength requirements under varying mining conditions to increases the stability of mine workings. This paper outlines the structures and mechanisms of the five types of self-screwed roof bolting systems along with their unique characteristics, advantages and disadvantages, and limitations. Two case studies using a Self-screwed Tube Drilling Bolting (STDB)©, one of the five types of roof tube bolting systems, show the principles of mechanics, suitability and parameters for a mine entry and a subway?s construction/ supports in the surrounding soil layers and soft sands, respectively are presented. The results confirmed the time dependent anchorage capacity between predictions and on-site measurements. Currently, other types of the self-screwed tube bolting systems are also being applied to different coal mines in China to increase entry stability and meet safety requirements.

"The East Side Access (ESA) CM005 Contract - Manhattan South Structures - consists of the installation of the waterproofing and final concrete lining for railroad tunnels, 3-Level Wye track turnout structures, segments of the Main Cavern Station, and a series of Ventilation Structures excavated beneath the existing Metro North Railroad (MNR) Grand Central Terminal. Several key team decisions made collectively by the Construction Manager (CM), Designer, and the Contractor has allowed the scheduled construction duration of 29 months to be maintained. These strategies include the use of alternate design and construction methods, including the use of pneumatically applied concrete lining and precast lining. This paper discusses these strategies, and illustrates how successful teamwork and cooperation during the execution of a large-scale construction project can lead to lowering costs, improving quality, and maintaining the overall project schedule. INTRODUCTION The East Side Access Project The Long Island Railroad (LIRR) currently transports commuters from Long Island into Manhattan, terminating at the already over congested Penn Station on the west side of Manhattan. Once completed, the ESA Project will provide LIRR commuters direct access to the east side of Manhattan underneath Grand Central Terminal. The ESA Project will help alleviate the congestion at Penn Station, which currently accommodate the NJ Transit, Amtrak, and LIRR lines; reduce travel time for LIRR passengers traveling to the east side of Manhattan and facilitate connections to the NYCT Subway System and Metro North Rail Road. The ESA Project includes building new tunnels and facilities under Manhattan and Queens. (See Figure 1).The Manhattan Alignment In the Manhattan segment of the ESA Project the excavation in hard rock of tunnels, cross passages, caverns and shafts has been completed by tunnel boring machines, drill and blast, and road header. The construction of the structural concrete final lining, interior structures and fit-out of the previously excavated caverns and tunnels are currently being performed under Contract CM005 Manhattan South Structures awarded to Michels Corporation and Contract CM006 Manhattan North Structures awarded to Frontier Kemper Constructors Inc. This paper focuses on the design and construction aspects of Contract CM005 which is the first ESA Contract in Manhattan to successfully construct concrete final linings in pre-existing excavated areas."

Environmental pressures on waste disposal are forcing pigment producers to use higher content TiO2 feedstocks with lower levels of trace elements. Despite this, 50% of the worlds TiO2 comes from ilmenite concentrates with only 37 -54 % TiO2 An industry growth rate of 25 % in the next ten years combined with trends to diminishing resources and lower grades for rutile (95 % TiO2) and leucoxenized ilmenite (55 to 90% TiO2) mean that unless new discoveries are made soon, the industry will become even more reliant on ilmenite. A hypothetical ideal feedstock is presented and strategies to obtain it are suggested. Reasons for some of the mineral specifications are given.

One of the primary interests of the United States Department of Energy's Mine Planning Division is to fully develop avenues of technical research which potentially offer positive effects on coal mine productivity. One such area of research involves the removal of methane gas from unmined portions of coalbeds through vertical wells drilled from surface locations. As coalbed methane content is reduced, less gas is available for flow into the mine, and consequently ventilation requirements are decreased and/or coal extraction rates increase. Another attractive aspect of the vertical borehole drainage method is that it presents an opportunity to recover and utilize significant quantities of methane gas, which would otherwise be wasted to the atmosphere. The viability of removing gas from the Mary Lee coalbed using stimulated vertical boreholes was first suggested by Elder and Deul as a result of a United States Bureau of Mines' drilling project conducted from 1971 to 1974 (4). Other United States Bureau of Mines' studies forecasted that degasification would eventually be necessary in the Mary Lee coalbed because most new or expanding mine development would take place at depths exceeding 1 000 feet (305 meters), where the methane problem would be severe (3) (13). In 1975 a large-scaled drilling program was designed in order to supply industry's anticipated need for a degasification technology in the Warrior coal basin, Alabama. The results of this government/industry sponsored effort were to be specifically applicable to the Mary Lee coalbed, the most extensive and economically important deep minable coal present in the area. Major technical objectives of this program are twofold: (1) to measure the effects of various well completion designs, particularly hydraulic stimulation, on mining and (2) to determine the effects of well spacing on gas drainage rates. A cooperative agreement was established with United States Steel Corporation in late 1975 and field work began shortly thereafter in the proximity of a newly developing mine near Oak Grove, Alabama. Government responsibility for this program was transferred from the United States Bureau of Mines to the United States Department of Energy in October 1977. To date, as a result of this program, twenty-one wells have been completed into the Mary Lee coalbed at the Oak Grove site. Seventeen of these wells were drilled on an experimental grid pattern located two miles from the active mine. These grid wells are primarily being used to generate data necessary to determine the effects of well spacing on gas drainage rates and will also provide a large amount of information regarding the long-term effects of degasification on mining. The four remaining wells (designated Ton through TW4) were placed near the mine so that the full effects of completion could be studied within the short time required for underground interception. Results gathered from the first two test wells (TW1 and TW2) have been reported in detail (10) and indicated that several improvements were necessary to increase gas drainage rates. Hydraulic stimulation was one of the most important aspects of well design that required improvement. Nitrogen-charged foam stimulation treatment was used at TW3 and TW4 instead of the gelled-fluid type stimulation used at the first two near-mine test wells.

"INTRODUCTION Background Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) has been a critical issue during the last decade in underground mines. This problem is threatening the health of mine workers, as well as the mine’s productivity. It has been confirmed that the diesel engine exhaust is the main source for the diesel particulate matter (DPM), and that it has the highest impact in raising carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxide of nitrogen, and hydrocarbons in the underground environment. Miners who are exposed to this kind of emission are at high risk for developing lung cancer and other lung diseases. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has issued standard rules to regulate diesel emissions in underground mines. The final ruling confirmed in 2008 that the total carbon should not exceed 160 µg/m3. (MISHA, 2008) Monitoring DPM in underground mines has become important to ensure compliance with the MSHA regulations. There are many different types of DPM monitoring systems that are currently being used in underground mines. Two methods are typically used for DPM sampling: the personal sampling method or the direct exhaust sampling method, which takes a direct sample from the engine’s tailpipe. Many mines do not recommend using the direct exhaust sampling method since it involves complex measuring equipment and procedures, as well as it is not regulated in the United States or Canada. Thus, the personal sampling method is the preferred method in many mines when taking DPM samples. Even this method includes many variations, such as the Respirable Combustible Dust (RCD) method and the method devolved by the National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety NIOSH 5040. The NIOSH 5040 method is the preferred method overall because it gives more accurate measurements compared to the other methods. This method does not allow organic carbon sources other than those coming from diesel engine exhausts to interfere with the measurements, which otherwise would lead to overestimating the actual amount of the DPM in the mine environment. An impactor feature in the cassette, which holds the samples in the instrument, characterizes this method. Since the diesel particles are less than 0.9 micron, this impactor does not allow particles more than 0.9 microns to be collected in the cassette filter. The cassette is then analyzed in a lab and the concentrations of organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and total carbon (TC) are determined. Lately, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has developed a new instrument that can use the same concept of NIOSH 5040, but with instant measurements of elemental carbon. It utilizes laser radiation with the cassette so it can give a real time measurement. The real time measurements give instant information about the underground environment that will allow the mining engineer to take immediate action and enact plans instead of waiting for results from the laboratories where NIOSH 5040 method may take several weeks to get the measurements."

INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is the most widely used and economic means of concentrating metal sulfide ores such as those containing copper, lead, zinc, nickel, molybdenum, and pyrite. Also recoverable are other metal species that are often associated with sulfide ores such as cobalt, platinum, gold, silver, etc. Froth flotation is a physico-chemical process for separating finely ground minerals from their associated gangue material. The process involves chemical treatment of a finely divided (ground) ore in a water pulp to create conditions favorable for the attachment of certain of the mineral particles to air bubbles. The air bubbles then carry the selected minerals, called valuable, to the surface of the pulp to form a stabilized froth which is removed and recovered. The unattached gangue material remains submerged in the pulp and is either discarded or reprocessed. To obtain the adherence of the desired mineral particles to the air bubbles, at least two specific steps must occur: a hydrophobic (water hating) surface film must be formed on the particles to be floated along with a hydrophillic (water wetting) film on all other particles; and a controlled bubble surface tension interface must be maintained, allowing for high particlelbubble collision frequency and efficient attachment or sticking of the particle to the bubble once collision has taken place. In most flotation applications, the above two steps are controlled by chemical flotation reagents. The collector is a chemical reagent which produces the hydrophobic film on the valuable mineral particle and is the primary driving force that initiates the flotation process. The frother is a chemical reagent which influences the collision frequency and attachment efficiency of hydrophobic particles and air bubbles. Thousands of research papers and books have been published on the chemical theory behind sulfide mineral collectors, e.g., Fuerstenau (1962), Fuerstenau (1976), Fuerstenau, et. al. (1985), King (1982), Leja (1982) and Moudgil and Somasundaran (1987), This article will only address and summarize some of the more practical aspects of collector usage. The industrial scale practice of froth flotation in sulfide mineral concentration has changed little since the 1950's. For example, of the approximately 80,000 metric tons of sulfide mineral collectors used commercially (1980) in the free world, almost 98% were known and manufactured in some form 25 years ago. A very interesting and informative history of collector development has been given by Crozier (1984). In addition, the industrial scale practice of froth flotation applied to sulfide ores has proceeded since the 1920's with often little direct (predictive) scientific explanation due to the extreme complexity of the flotation process. Empirical testing has been a mainstay of industrial flotation reagent development and use. Even today there is often strong disagreement between researchers as to the mechanisms of chemical flotation practices that have been performed successfully at an industrial scale for many years. As a result of the above environment which makes reagent cost/performance analysis difficult for new reagents, there is a strong tendency for the flotation operation to use, and reagent companies to supply, as cheap as possible raw materials and manufactured products that are quite general in application. In the last 20 years or so, there has been increasing technical effort to tailor make reagents for specific applications, but to date such work has had little commercial impact. It is clearly the hope of this author and others that this situation will change in future years as technology improves and pressure for improved flotation performance intensifies. This article is a condensation of collector usage trends quantified as part of a comprehensive industrially oriented applications program on froth flotation organized by Klimpel and coworkers (1979-1987) and as reported in various countries that participated in the program from 1978-1983. Feldspar is the earth's most abundant mineral group. The feldspars are aluminum silicate minerals belonging to the tectosilicate class. Feldspars are the most widespread of any mineral group and are estimated to constitute 60% of the earth's crust. They make up a large percentage of the exposed rocks as well as soils, clays, and other unconsolidated sediments. Feldspars are widely used in the glass and ceramic industry and are principal components in rock classification schemes. Feldspar minerals and their production are important contributors to the domestic and world economies and standard of living. In 1990, the United States produced 630 kt of feldspar minerals, and world production was estimated to be more than 5 Mt. Feldspar mineral production in the United States has a long and interesting history (Feitler, 1967, Rogers Jr. et al., 1983). The first commercial production in the United States occurred in about 1825 and came from pegmatite bodies located in Connecticut, where feldspar was mined, hand sorted, and shipped to England. Feldspar production grew during the 19th and 20th centuries with important developments in production location, integrated mine and processing facilities, and the development of the flotation process for feldspar by the US Bureau of Mines and the feldspar industry. The first commercial feldspar flotation plant began operations-in Kona, NC, in 1946, some six years after this process had been developed. In 1990, the domestic feldspar industry consisted of 12 operating companies with mines and processing plants located throughout the United States (see Table 1). During the last 25 years, the domestic feldspar industry has been dynamic, marked by new plant construction and capacity expansion at older plants. The industry has also seen plant closures, changes in ownership of existing operations, the consolidation of the Canadian nepheline syenite industry, and the increase of imported feldspar products. The industry has been affected by contractions in its major end-use markets brought about by economic cycles, product substitution, and environmental effects, such as recycling, land-use controversy, and air and water pollution. Despite problems, the industry remains mature and highly competitive. GEOLOGY Mineralogy The common feldspar group of minerals form a single crystalline phase or solid solution series of minerals. Fig. 1 is a ternary phase diagram that shows the feldspar mineralogy-KAlSi,O8, NaAlSi3O8, and CaAl2Si2O8. The end-member compositions are also referred to as potassium, sodium, and calcium feldspar. The feldspars whose chemistry ranges between the potassium and sodium end-members are known as alkali feldspars, while those between the sodium and calcium end-members are plagioclase feldspars. These feldspar groups can be further subdivided based on structural and compositional features within the alkali or plagioclase feldspar series. The distinction between and the proportion of members of the two feldspar groups are important to the classification of igneous rocks (Deer et al., 1966). Perthites are the exsolution product of an initially homogeneous potassium-sodium feldspar solid solution which forms (in an environment of decreasing temperature) a heterogeneous intergrowth of sodium-rich feldspar lamellae in a host crystal of potassium feldspar. Antiperthites are exsolution products in which the host mineral is sodium-rich plagioclase feldspar and the intergrowths are potassium-rich feldspar.

Moisture requirements in the filter cake have been consistently met, eliminating the need for thermal drying after filtration. Operating data and Tube Press Filter are described herein.

Equipment choices for ultrafine grinding encompass several different types of dry and wet size-reduction devices. These need to be put into functional perspective for systematic analysis of capabilities and limitations versus processing requirements of the materials to be satisfactorily ground. Particle strengths plus maximum and average sizes are the primary variables controlling grinding action requirements and equipment options for efficient processing. These are fairly well understood and provide the starting point for decisions. Particle space requirements under dynamic processing conditions vary with particle shapes and size-distributions by as much as 30X. This additional major variable is not widely appreciated and does need adequate description to provide a firm basis for selecting processing compositions and procedures.

Rare earth compounds, such as samarium-cobalt compounds and neodymium-icon compounds, are being used more often for the manufacture of permanent magnets, because these materials permit the production of permanent magnets with higher magnetic energy potential than the conventional ferrite magnets. Especially, the recent rapid developments in the field of electronics and electro-technology have demanded an increased production of rare earth magnets. Unlike ferrite, which is typically produced by a wet process, rare earths can be ground and classified either in a wet or dry process. In the past, batch ball mills, through-pass ball mills in circuit with air classifiers, and conventional jet mills were primarily employed for the dry processing. These methods, however, have suffered from the problems, for example, wear and contamination, low product quality In particle size distribution, difficult to adopt inert-gas operation, and high specific energy consumption. In this report, dry processing of rare earth powders will be presented, especially ultrafine grinding with fluidized bed jet mill.

Research and experience have demonstrated that the operating conditions of the flotation process are reflected in the froth?s appearance. Despite recent advances in image analysis and several algorithms developed for froth flotation, there still is not a comprehensive algorithm to accurately determine bubble features from actual froth images. Being able to accurately and automatically measure bubble size distribution is an important requirement for optimization and control of the flotation process. Segmentation is one of the most effective approaches for accurately determining the bubble size distribution. In the present study, a new bubble segmentation algorithm, which utilizes an adaptive marker-based watershed transform, is proposed to measure the bubble size distribution from froth images. The developed algorithm is validated using some industrial scale froth images from flotation cells at different duties.

I feel very privileged to be added to the distinguished group that has received this award since the first recipient, Reno Sales, received it in 1954. If my research is correct, the last geologist to be honored was Bill Callahan in 1982. Perhaps the Awards Committee decided it was about time to select a geologist, and I became the beneficiary. Regarding the discovery of the Carlin ore body, it was the culmination of several studies - one going back as far as 1939 when a US Bureau of Mines engineer named W.O. Vanderberg recognized an unusual type of gold mineralization in sediments in northern Nevada. What was unusual was the fact that the gold was so fine that it would not concentrate in a pan. This, plus the study of the Roberts Mountain thrust by Ralph Roberts (1960) and conversations with Harry Bishop, manager of the Gold Acres Mine, pointed Alan Coope and me in the direction of the Lynn Window and, eventually, the Carlin discovery. There has been a great deal written about this discovery. I thought it would be interesting to discuss the evolution of Carlin gold exploration in Nevada since this time and to discuss the changes in perception of this unique type of mineralization. The method used by Coope and me in following up on Roberts' work was to map geologically the Roberts Mountain thrust and conduct geochemical sampling of favorable outcrops and float. Coope was highly experienced in geochemical exploration, as he had graduated from the Royal School of Mines in London, studying under John S. Webb, one of the pioneers of geochemistry as applied to mineral exploration. We first considered using pathfinder elements, but finally concentrated on gold analyses alone, even though the sensitivity of fire assays used at that time was only about one-half part per million. According to the spatial relationship of the mineralization to the Roberts Mountain thrust, as pointed out by Roberts (1960), we were looking for mineralization within the thrust itself. Our models were the known Gold Acres and Getchell mines, which contained reserves on the order of 0.9 to 1.8 mt (1 to 2 million st). These were not of substantial size, but I had hoped we might find more than one of these tributary to a mill that would justify an operation for our employer, Newmont Mining Corp. What we ended up with was the type of deposit we were looking for - an open pit deposit of micron gold, which the old timers had missed because the gold was not capable of being panned. But never in our wildest dreams did we think there was a chance of finding a body containing 10 mt (11 million st) of ore at 0.30 oz/st (10.3 g/t).The deposit was not in the thrust proper but was found in a favorable horizon of Roberts Mountain siltstone that was below the thrust. This is the first example of how a model should not be followed blindly. Newmont was successful in keeping this discovery quiet for some time. After a considerable amount of drilling, a rumor circulated that they had discovered a large low-grade ore body of around 1.7 to 2.1 g/t (0.05 to 0.06 oz/st), which of course would not have been economic with gold at $1.13/g ($35/oz), which was the fixed price at that time. The company, for obvious reasons, did not discourage the rumor. When, however, the true results came out there was a lot of feverish activity. Because of this new type of so-called "invisible gold," which could have been missed by the old timers, the thought was that other deposits would be discovered very soon. The Carlin and other smaller deposits, including Bootstrap, Blue Star and Gold Quarry, were in windows where the lower plate of the Roberts Mountain formation (below the thrust) had been exposed by erosion. Operators of underground coal mine shuttle cars are exposed to numerous hazards including noise, dust and musculoskeletal trauma. The repetitive nature of shuttle car operation leads to fatigue-related incidents and soft tissue injuries. The poor visibility conditions, and dust and noise increase the occupational hazards to the operator, as well to other miners. To reduce the risks for all miners, towards providing a safer working environment for all workers, the introduction of autonomous shuttle cars is essential. This paper introduces a project to demonstrate the feasibility of incorporating autonomous shuttle cars in the underground coal mining cycle. The autonomous shuttle car will be able to localize itself, to map its surroundings and to navigate in an underground GPS-denied environment. It will also navigate efficiently by fusing different on-board sensor modalities, autonomously planning the optimum path and traversing around the mine while avoiding collisions with humans and other static and dynamic obstacles. This will be achieved by exploring and testing different state-of-the-art techniques and off-the-shelf components, and integrating them into existing equipment, i.e., retrofitting an actual shuttle car. Moreover, a modified mining system will be demonstrated which will incorporate the autonomous shuttle car, capable of making real-time decisions, into the mining cycle. The system will regulate the interactions between the autonomous machinery and the human dynamic, with emphasis given to the safety of the workers, and enable the real-time, remote supervision of the mining process. The focus will be on coal mines, where the room and pillar mining method is used. INTRODUCTION The growing demand for mineral supplies combined with the steady decline in the available surface reserves has driven the mining industry to mine deeper underground deposits. These deposits are difficult to access, and the environment may be hazardous to mine personnel (e.g., increased heat, difficult ventilation conditions, etc.). Moreover, current mining methods expose the miners to numerous occupational hazards such as working in the proximity of heavy mining equipment, possible roof falls, as well as noise and dust. In recent decades, the utilization of autonomous machines has evolved in the mining industry to provide increased health and safety to mine personnel and reduce their exposure to adverse conditions. Automation aims to remove the workers from the hazardous conditions which may be present in an active mining area and place them to a more comfortable and safer environment at a distance from the active mining face. Examples of incorporation of autonomous machinery in the mining industry include the fleet of more than 100 autonomous mine trucks that are employed at the Rio Tinto’s iron ore mines in Western Australia for material haulage. There are also semi-autonomous, teleoperated LHD machines employed at several mines around the world (e.g., Sweden, USA, China). However, the operation of the autonomous machinery in these cases is either partial (semi-autonomous, teleoperated vehicles) and of small-scale or occurs at surface mines where GPS significantly facilitates the autonomous navigation of them.

"Continuous miners are often equipped with a flooded-bed dust scrubber to clean the air from close to an active underground coal mining face. However, its impingement screen is prone to clogging due to an accumulation of dust, thereby lowering the scrubber’s efficiency and potentially exposing the mine workers to higher levels of dust. Fans can compensate for the increased resistance by varying their operating parameters, but the scrubber screen needs significant maintenance which leads to downtime. The authors have proposed a suitably sized Vortecone as an alternative to the conventional flooded-bed dust scrubber system. Water is used as the filter medium, which is replaced and recycled continuously. Preliminary CFD investigations of Vortecone scrubbers have indicated higher cleaning efficacies, especially in the respirable range. This paper presents the results including the flow characteristics and capture efficacies of a full-scale Vortecone. Multi-phase flows, including free-surface modeling and particle tracking methods, have been adopted. These miners extract coal by the shearing action of the wethead cutting drums. Strategically placed water sprays on the drum not only cool the bits extending their useful service life, they also suppress the dust at the point of generation itself. A flooded-bed dust-scrubber (Campbell, et al. 1983) is usually integrated onto the continuous miner to arrest dust from close to the active face. These fan-powered scrubbers have an impingement screen flooded with water, which also serves as the filter element. A demister downstream of the screen removes the excess water from the air cleaned. These conventional scrubbers have been found to be very effective in alleviation of respirable dust levels underground (Chao and De-sheng 2000) (Colinet, Reed and Potts 2013). However, the inefficiencies of the flooded-bed dust scrubbers arise out of their internal components. Depending on the mining conditions, the screen may be clogged by the accumulation of the trapped dust particles. The resistance of the scrubber system is increased reducing the airflow. The flooded-bed dust-scrubber system would, therefore, require frequent maintenance of the screen and the demister (Listak 2010). Since any maintenance needs to be carried out under supported roof, this leads to loss of availability of the equipment as well. In addition to this, the continuous miner operators could be exposed to elevated levels of dust when satisfactory airflow at the face is not achieved."

"Tunnels designed to NFPA 502 are required to withstand the RWS time-temperature curve, more specifically prevent progressive spalling and loss of strength of steel reinforcement. Fire boards or spray-on layers can be effective, however, these solutions have capital and whole-life cost implications. The use of “fire resistant” concrete based on a suitable aggregate with polypropylene fibers has also increased in recent years. This article presents a new methodology for thermal and structural analysis of segmentally lined tunnels, which permits the analysis of project specific fire curves and an assessment of different fire protection strategies. The effectiveness of fire boards is assessed along with whether “fire resistant” concrete alone is a viable means of achieving the required protection. Finally, since NFPA 502 recommends water-based fixed fire-fighting systems for Category C and D tunnels, we discuss the question of how a fixed fire-fighting system should be addressed within the structural design. INTRODUCTION Protecting road tunnels from structural damage and collapse is a key requirement for both life safety and business continuity. Where road tunnels are part of key highway corridors, protecting business continuity is a high priority for owners, operators and the Authority Having Jurisdiction. For existing tunnels, compliance with NFPA 502 may require upgrades with either passive fire protection and/or water-based fixed firefighting systems. For new tunnels, compliance with NFPA 502 requires a combination of good practice in design and fire testing. A water-based fixed firefighting system is a Conditionally Mandatory Requirement1 for Class C and D tunnels, i.e. all tunnels greater than 300m and 1000m long respectively. The basis for fire safety design of new tunnels and assessment of existing tunnels is the worst-case fire scenario. The microtunneling project for the State of Hawaii's Natural Energy Laboratory (NELH) facility in Kona, Hawaii, was awarded to Nova Group Inc., Napa, California. Nova has developed both microtunnel and deep pile cofferdam experience. Both of which would be required for this project. The project was designed by Makai Ocean Engineering of Honolulu as a continuation of the Ocean Thermal Energy Project (OTEC). The world's first OTEC plant has been successfully operational at NELH since 1982 netting approx 50 kw of usable electric power from a gross generation of 210 kw. A second plant designed to draw 39°F cold water from 3,000 ft below sea level and produce a gross output of 1 mw with a net 500 kw of usable power required 2 - 54 in. finished diameter pipelines. An ongoing problem with earlier offshore pipelines has been the damage to the near-shore pipes within the surf zone. The necessity for a deeper connection between the land based pipe and submerged sea pipeline was obvious. Earlier pipelines had been drilled and shot through the shoreline. This process was only practical at shallow depths. Makai Ocean Engineering and the NELH scientists looked at different methods to get the pipeline through the shoreline at a depth of 80 ft below sea level. Few, if any, of the non-ionizing radiation health hazards to be found in either surface or underground coal mining are uniquely different because of their being found in the work environment. Hence, they can be considered generally for their bio-effects on the worker when found in the mining work environment. The same may not be said, however, for the lack of non-ionizing radiation and its bio-effects, particularly as it relates to underground coal mining. The term "non-ionizing radiation" refers to various forms of electromagnetic radiation of wavelengths longer than those of ionizing radiation. As the wavelength gets longer the energy of electromagnetic radiation decreases. Therefore, all non-ionizing forms of radiation have less energy than cosmic, gamma, and X-radiation. In order of increasing wavelength, non-ionizing radiation includes ultraviolet, visible light, infrared, microwave, and radiofrequency radiations. The energy frequency and wavelength range of both the ionizing and non-ionizing electromagnetic forces are shown in Table I. To convert the wavelengths of various radiations to Ångström units, one multiplies millimicrons by ten. In a vacuum, all electromagnetic radiation has the same velocity, namely 3 x 1010 centimeters per second. The natural source of radiant energy here on earth is our sun which emits radiation continuously over a wide spectrum. This radiation on average reaching earth ranges from 290 nm in the ultraviolet range to over 2,000 nm in the infrared range with a maximum intensity of about 480 nm in the visual range. You will note this falls into the visible blue wavelength and accounts for our blue sky and blue ocean and deep water effects. We are all familiar with the fact that the passage of solar radiation through the atmosphere to the earth changes the spectrum considerably because the atmosphere absorbs and scatters many of the sun's rays. The ozone in the upper atmosphere absorbs the shorter ultraviolet wavelengths and water vapor absorbs some of the infrared wavelengths. Smoke, dust particles, gas molecules and water droplets scatter the rays, especially those of shorter wavelengths. In addition to the sun, every gas, liquid or solid object at a temperature above absolute 0° radiates energy. Solid objects emit almost continuous spectra. At low temperatures only radiation of the longer wavelengths in the infrared range is emitted, but as the temperature of the object is increased, more and more of the shorter wavelengths are added. This fact is most readily demonstrated by heating a piece of steel. When a piece of steel reaches a temperature of about 1,700° Fahrenheit, it gives off radiation at the red end of the visible spectrum and appears dull red. As the temperature is further increased, the shorter rays are also emitted, until at about 2,100°F, the metal appears white, due to the emission of wavelengths throughout the entire visible range. Gasses, on the other hand, when heated emit radiant energy only at certain wavelengths, which are characteristic of their chemical structure. This latter fact is of importance in underground coal mining as high intensity gas and vapor lamps are becoming more and more utilized for illumination in underground coal mining. The biologic effect of non-ionizing radiation exposure depends upon the type and duration of exposure and on the amount of absorption by the miner. The effects of this radiant energy on the miner fall into four distinct types: (1) the heating effect of infrared radiation, (2) the effect on the eye of visible radiation, (3) the effects of ultraviolet radiation, and (4) the growing potential effects of the misuse of microwave radiation. Each non-ionizing type of radiation will be considered individually. ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION The sun is the major source of ultraviolet radiation, which is of concern in open pit and surface mining at certain seasons and in certain climes necessitating protection for the surface miners under those conditions; nonetheless, there are some man-made sources such as electric arc lights, welding arcs, plasma jets, and special ultraviolet bulbs for illumination underground that demand surveillance in the underground environment to be aware of whether the miners are at risk above the threshold limit values allowable. Since ultraviolet radiation has little penetrating power, the organs that are affected are the skin and the eyes. Ultraviolet radiation is strongly absorbed by nucleic acids and proteins, and the effects in man are largely chemical rather than thermal. Short-term effects on miners include acute changes in the skin. These are of four types: (a) darkening of pigment, (b) erythema (sunburn), (c) increase in pigmentation (tanning) and (d) changes in cell growth. Ultraviolet radiation also causes acute effects on the tissues of the eye. Overexposure can lead to keratitis, inflammation of the cornea, and conjunctivitis. Long-term effects of ultraviolet exposure include an increase in the rate of ageing of the skin with degeneration of skin tissue and a decrease in elasticity. Late effects of ultraviolet on the eye include the development of cataracts. The most serious chronic effect of ultraviolet exposure is skin cancer. Ultraviolet radiation effects are increased by some industrial materials and drugs. After exposure to such compounds as cresols, the skin is exceptionally sensitive to ultraviolet radiation. Photosensitivity reactions occur after exposure to a variety of other chemicals and drugs including dyes, phenothiazines, sulfonamides, and sulfanylureas. 1.1 GENERALIZED METHODS OF SUPPRESSING THE INFLOW OF GROUND WATER DURING THE CONSTRUCTION OF SHAFTS, DRIFTS AND TUNNELS Various methods are used to prevent or minimize the inflow of ground water into underground workings during their excavation. The two most common methods include freezing the saturated rock and grouting using cement, sodium silicate, polyurethane and/or other chemicals. Each of these technologies for combatting the inflow of ground water is effective only under specific hydrogeological conditions. For example, although the freezing of saturated ground is among the more universally adopted methods, it is designed to provide only temporary protection during construction. Before the saturated rock thaws it is necessary to emplace a waterproof liner which is labor intensive, time consuming, and expensive. Consequently, freezing is used only in exceptionally complex hydrogeological conditions, namely in those cases where the water-bearing strata consist of unstable rock or the ground water has an anomalous hydrochemistry. The classical grouting of saturated rock, carried out from the surface or from the face of the underground workings for the purpose of limiting the inflow of ground water during excavation, utilizes both cement and a variety of chemical grouts. Cement grouting has been regarded as the main method of combatting the inflow of ground water in fractured rock throughout the world. In such countries as the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), Canada, the Republic of South Africa and Great Britain, cement grouting is the main method of reducing the inflow of ground water during the excavation of mine openings. In Great Britain and the FRG, cement grouting has been used in 80% of all shaft excavations. In the Republic of South Africa cement grouting has been used in almost 100% of all the shafts that have been constructed. The installation of grout curtains into permeable water- bearing strata significantly reduces their permeability and increases the rock strength. Grouting has the greatest effect in fractured sandstones, certain well indurated shales, fractured granites, fractured quartzites, and karstic limestones or dolomites. The following principal factors must be considered when assessing the expediency of grouting rock with cement: the geometry of the network of fracture openings, the saturated hydraulic conductivity of the fractured rock, the hydraulic head acting on the water in the rock, and the chemical composition of the ground water. On the basis of the geometry of the fractures and the thickness of each hydrostratigraphic unit, the characteristics of the cement grout are selected. As a rule, the cementing of large fractured zones with high ground water velocities is carried out using inert fillers (sand, mill slag, loam, loess, crushed limestone), special types of cement, setting accelerators, and high cement concentrations in water. Calcium chloride, soda ash, sodium silicate, sodium nitrate, amino alcohols, tin bichloride, trisulphate nitrate, and lumnite are used extensively as the setting accelerators for cement grouts. In the FRG and Poland, special cement injection compounds that embody a mixture of cement and active cement metal salts, water additives and binding substances are being used for the cementing of saturated zones with rapid ground water velocities. These reagents accelerate the rate of structure-forming reactions. In spite of the wide variety of additives used for cement grouts, the effectiveness of the method in large fractures below the water table is either poor or it leads to a very large consumption of cement due to the erosion of the grout through the cracks before it hardens. At the present time, a large number of cement types and brands are being produced by various countries. These variations permit cementing to be employed in a variety of geological conditions. However, both pure cement grout and grouts with fillers constitute unstable systems with a high water loss rate. Therefore during the grouting of finely fractured rock the cement grout's premature loss of a large amount of free water causes its consistency to increase, whereupon the grout solidifies. Consequently, it inadequately penetrates into the fine fractures of the stratum. In addition the high water loss rate in the cement grout causes unreacted cement particles to remain, which greatly reduces the grout hardness and the resulting rock strength characteristics are weakened. As a result, the binding properties of the cement are utilized perhaps up to 60%. The remaining portion is left in the grout as a filler. All these conditions significantly decrease the efficiency of the isolation effort both with respect to strength and cost. In order to expand the cement grouting method, re- search is being conducted to improve the quality of cement grout, to increase its range of application with respect to permeability control, to reduce its water loss rate and to increase its capacity to withstand the erosive and corrosive effects of poor quality ground water.
