Careful financial analysis of capital investments has always been a vital task in mining which is one of the most capital intensive sectors of the economy. Furthermore, mining costs have leapt ahead at an astonishing rate in recent years not just due to accelerated inflation, which affects everyone, but also due to the imposition of enormous costs of enviromental regulation and the continuing decline in ore tenor. Not only have unit costs risen, but the amount of effort expended to recover a pound of metal has increased due to the inexorable decrease in ore grades. New low-margin, high-volume mining investments place increasing importance on sound financial planning. Owing to the enormous investments involved, a greater share of individual corporate resources is committed to these projects than is normally the case in other industries. Thus, the consequences of failure are extremely grave, and a close examination of all inputs to the evaluation equation is clearly indicated.

Since the "end" of the Cold War, revolutionary new research and commercial remote sensing capabilities are being developed that will dramatically change the way we map the earth and address its environmental problems. The technology challenge is not the growth of new environmental remote sensing technologies themselves. It is, rather, how these new innovative observing systems can be accepted and used to the benefit of both the regulatory and the mining communities in the light of present concerns about unknown risks of discovery and liability. Ore reserves in the Republic mining district were nearly exhausted in 1984 when hole D-54 intersected a vein twenty- eight feet in drill width averaging 1.57 opt gold and 11.95 opt silver below post-mineral lake beds. The discovery area, termed "Golden Promise", has announced proven and probable ore reserves of approximately 372,000 tons averaging 1.0 opt gold and 4.5 opt silver, and drilling indicates another 756,000 tons of mineralized material containing 0.37 opt gold and 1.4 opt silver (Hecla fourth quarter 1986 report). This paper describes new geological interpretations made as part of a district research study sponsored by Hecla Mining Co., which led to the D-54 discovery. Important new geological concepts include: 1) re-interpretation of the volcanic stratigraphy of the district and recognition of a suite of pyroclastic rocks that are unique to the Republic graben, 2) identification of disseminated subaerial mineralization at a paleosurface that corresponds to the newly described upper contact of the Sanpoil Volcanics, 3) recognition that epithermal veins have a maximum productive vertical range of 0-500 meters, measured from the paleosurface, and 4) veins exhibit visual and geochemical vertical zoning within the productive zone with highest gold occurring at an optimal depth, which is interpreted as the average depth of hydrothermal boiling.

Namibia is known as water stressed country with a limited amount of fresh water. Therefore, the use of water is an important topic in the country’s development agenda. Water is a shared and finite resource, with high social, cultural, environmental and economic value. However, freshwater resources are under pressure from ore processing, industrialization, urbanization and the demands of a growing population. In Namibia, ore processing, coupled with the anticipated increase in water demand for human consumption and other uses, has created significant stress on the limited water resources of the country. This is critical in the mining industry as water remains typically the prime environmental medium (besides air) that is affected by mining activities. This study sought to investigate the strides made in water management in mining, especially in environmentally sensitive areas of Namibia. Most mining companies operate next or alongside farms, national parks and fishing areas. The overall objective of this research was to highlight the current practices in Namibia’s mineral industry operating in environmentally sensitive areas especially in areas where uranium is being mined and processed. The methodology consisted of comprehensive literature review, field visits to the case study areas, and comparative studies with best practices. This study shows that over a ten-year period, freshwater consumption was reduced by over 55% per tonne of milled ore in uranium mines, resulting in substantive financial savings as well as the delay in water augmentation through desalination. The strategies employed by the Namibian companies involve inclusive stakeholders’ engagement, recycling and reuse, and the minimization of water losses. The realization that the water challenge cannot be solved by any one party acting alone has been fundamental in ensuring environmental compliance within the mining industry in Namibia. Namibia’s industrial leaders have increasingly recognized that reducing the water footprint of mining activities must be one of the key performance indicators for management. The major finding of this study was that Namibia with its unique ecosystems, mineral reserves, and emerging industries can harness a wide range of resources both to improve the welfare of its citizens and to protect the integrity of its environment.

Minera Escondida is the world's largest copper mine. Its capacity is more than 800 kt/a (880,000 stpy) of copper. The Escondida open-pit mine operates at an elevation of 3,100 m (10,170 ft). It is located in the Atacama desert about 160 km (100 miles) southeast of the port of Antofagasta. At Coloso, 14 km (8 miles) south of Antofagasta, copper concentrate is dewatered by filtration for storage and shipment to overseas markets (Fig. 1). Concentrate filtrate water, after being treated to remove suspended solids, is discharged at 60 m (200 ft) depth into the Pacific Ocean. This effluent is free of particulates. However, it does contain metal levels above US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) receiving water criterion. EPA standards are more strict than Chilean receiving water guidelines. However, a multiport diffuser provides rapid mixing of sea water with effluent to ensure metal levels in the receiving water remain below EPA receiving water guidelines. The Escondida Mine began operation in December 1990 at a rated mill capacity of 35 kt/d (38,500 stpd). Since then, the complex has since undergone three expansions. In 1996, it processed 115 kt/d (127,000 stpd) of ore. At Coloso in 1993, about 25% of the copper concentrate was fed to an ammonia leach plant for solvent extraction and electrowinng of cathode copper. This plant is designed to produce 80 kt/a (88,000 st/year) of cathode copper. In 1995, the ocean diffuser system's capacity was doubled to accommodate increased flows to a maximum 50 L/sec (793 gpm). This was achieved by extending the diffuser chamber by 32 m (105 ft) and adding 16 nozzles, which doubled the diffuser's capacity. In November 1996, Rescan Environmental Services began a field verification of the outfall/diffuser system's performance. The study's objective was to determine the performance of the outfall/diffuser system by measuring dilution factors using fluorescent Rhodamine dye and to determine if copper concentrations are below the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) water quality criterion of 2.9 µg/L total copper (EPA, 1986). Rhodamine dye was injected into the outfall/diffuser system. An oceanographic survey using an in situ fluorometer was conducted to measure dye concentrations in the effluent plume. Water column characteristics were also measured. These included current speed and direction.

INTRODUCTION The tailings, or solid waste, remaining after uranium has been extracted from an ore and the liquid wastes associated with it contain both radioactive and other substances which, if released to the environment, may have a detrimental impact on man and his environment. Although the radioactivity of the waste is of natural origin, the mining and milling process results in bringing the radioactive ore to the surface, changing its chemical and physical form, increasing its mobility and, therefore, enhancing the potential radiological exposure to man. Exposure to radionuclides released from a tailings impoundment, while small as applied to any one generation, can be made large by counting far into the future, large enough to be the dominant source of exposure from the nuclear fuel cycle, Cunningham (1978). Increasingly it is being found that where the prime concern was initially the radionuclide releases, the release of other pollutants and contaminants may be of equal or greater concern. While there is a definite benefit, at least to present generations, resulting from the recovery of uranium, current and long-term concerns require that consequential present and future releases be kept as low as is reasonably achievable. Design practice, to minimize this release, is currently passing through a technical revolution; precipitated by public and institutional concerns. New techniques and methods are, therefore, being actively sought and continuously implemented. Because of the complexity of the pollutant release mechanisms and the sitespecific nature of each impoundment site and tailings product, a wide variety of site selection and design options have been implemented or considered. It is often possible to design a number of satisfactory tailings disposal schemes which differ widely in nature and cost. Representative sample s of typical manganiferous iron ores from the Cuyuna Range, Minnesota, were reduced to the metallic iron state at temperatures just short of fusion with an excess of coke in the manner prescribed by the R-N Direct Reduction Process. The magnetic separation characteristics of the reduced ores were determined at several grinds by means of the Davis magnetic tube concentrator. The efficiency of metallic iron concentration by magnetic separation was a direct function of the degree of metallization of the ore sample and of the degree of liberation attained in grinding. Some improvement of liberation characteristics was observed if a small amount of sodium chloride was present in the ore during reduction. Despite the extremely fine -grained structure of the crude ores, iron concentrates containing more than 90% Fe at iron unit recoveries of 90% or more were obtained from well-metallized samples of three of the four ores tested. The rejection of manganese to the tailings corresponding to such separations varied from 80 to 95%.

Introduction Metallurgical accounting practices have been revolutionized over the past 15 years by the introduction of low cost personal computers and easy- to-use spreadsheet software. The Chimney Creek metallurgical accounting system takes full advantage of these advances. Data is provided by a PLC-based process control system, IBM data logging, operator logsheets and assay results from an automatatic plant sampling system. The data is organized and stored in an IBM PS/2 system using Lotus 123 and customized accounting programs to provide a comprehensive information management system. Metallurgical accounting for gold plants should ideally provide information for the following: a) Gold production accounting b) Day-to-day process control and operation c) Metallurgical evaluation and process optimization The Chimney Creek system provides all of these while overcoming specific accounting problems presented by SAG milling a coarse feed, grinding in cyanide and dump leaching run-of-mine material. Process description Gold Fields' Chimney Creek mine is located 47 miles northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada, at the northern end of the Osgood Mountains. Ore is processed by a combination of dump leaching and milling processes. The dump leach operation treats approximately 2.0 million tons per year of low grade ore (0.030 oz/ton). Run-of-mine ore is top dumped in 40 foot high pads. The use of three solution ponds for leaching enables an intermediate solution to be recirculated to the leach pad to reduce the pregnant solution flowrate and increase gold tenor of solution to the carbon-in-column (CIC) recovery circuit. Gold recovery is approximately 65% by this method. The milling process employs a SAG mill-ball mill grinding circuit to treat 900,000 tons per year at an average grade of 0.19 oz/ton. The ore is crushed to minus 12" in a jaw crusher prior to feeding the SAG mill. Cyanide is added to the grinding circuit to start gold dissolution as early as possible. After grinding, leaching of the ore is continued in a unique two-stage counter current decantation circuit 1 with 12 hours of leaching between stages . 85% of the soluble gold is recovered from the first stage thickener overflow in carbon columns (CIC). The second stage underflow is treated in a scavenger carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant. Ultimate gold recovery is over 95%. Loaded carbon from both the dump leaching and milling processes is pressure stripped by hot cyanide solution and gold is recovered from the resulting solution by zinc precipitation. The precipitate is retorted for mercury removal and smelted into bullion. The plant flowsheet appears in Figure 1. Data collection Data for daily metallurgical accounting is obtained from three sources: a) Plant sampling b) Process control system c) Operator logsheets All of the data collection for metallurgical accounting is based around the 12-hour shift operating schedule. Sampling All critical sampling for gold production accounting is performed by automatic samplers (Figure 2). Heath & Sherwood two-stage sampling systems are used for sampling all slurry streams (cyclone overflow, CIP feed and CIP tails). The automatic sampler consists of a pneumatically operated primary sample cutter and a continuous rotary secondary splitter. The cyclone overflow and CIP tails are the most critical samples since these are used to calculate gold into and out of the plant on a shiftly basis. A potentially cost effective technique for the reclamation of heavy metal contaminated soils and sediments involves the technique of froth flotation. Heavy metals sorbed to clays in the soil may be sulfidized by the introduction of sodium sulfide and floated using a dithiophosphate collector. Separations were obtained where up to 78% of all copper ion was removed from the system. Selected samples were floated in a column cell but little advantage was seen.

The Bureau of Mines' rapid method of dewatering fine-particulate slurries uses extremely high molecular weight polymers. These polymers form large, strong flocs which can be dewatered by sieving or sedimentation. However, sometimes these flocs deteriorate rapidly if water is not removed immediately. During field tests, clay slurries have been encountered that could have been dewatered economically if it were not for the rapid floc deterioration. A kinetics study was conducted to determine the rate of kaolin-PED floc degradation in which polymer addition, to bring the flocs back to their original condition, was used to determine the extent of floc decay. Results showed that the amount of polymer added, to replace polymer lost by spreading, was less for the lower PEO concentrations. For this clay-polymer system, floc breakage as judged by polymer additions followed first order kinetics. It was also found that the addition of fluoride ion stabilized the kaolin flocs.

Gold and silver processing techniques are some of the oldest in the mining industry. Gold mining of high grade veins and deposits has existed for centuries. However, only with the higher gold prices in recent years and heap leaching techniques have the low grade gold and silver deposits become feasible to mine and process economically. By mining and hauling 3,600,000 tons of ore per year at an average grade of 0.03 ounces/ton gold and 0.385 ounces/ton silver, the Zortman- Landusky operations became profitable in 1982. To maintain profitably, a stripping ratio of less than one ton of waste to one ton of ore, and mine run ore placed on the leach pads which will yield approximately seventy percent go1 d recovery.

Production of methane is an inevitable consequence of mining coal. Although the number of mines practicing recovery of methane prior to, or during, coal mining is increasing, ventilation air methane (VAM) is still a significant source of methane addition in to atmosphere. Recent studies have shown that there are ways to recover the VAM energy, while simultaneously reducing the methane emission in to atmosphere. This paper discusses a case study, currently underway, to develop a technique to quantify the VAM emission from a mine. It also presents the different VAM utilization techniques and the suitability of one for the mine being studied. Finally, the paper summarizes the research issues that require further investigation.

The problem of estimating separation characteristics by utilizing mass distributions of feed and products is considered. The separation characteristics include mass yield and partition curve. The cases of mass balance and partition functions balance are identified. The developed techniques can handle the cases of two- and three-product separation. Actual data are utilized to demonstrate the proposed techniques.

The liquid-phase mixing within CANMET's Western Research Centre's (WRC) 0.76-m-diem pilot-plant flotation column was characterized using a salt tracer. The process variables studied were frother addition and, gas and liquid flow rates. The response of the column to a tracer pulse was monitored at three axial and two radial locations. The results showed that the 2-tph flotation column was well mixed. Discussed are the implications of this observation to column design and scale-up.

Jamaica has extensive deposits of marble, gypsum, and limestone, offering prospects for commercial sales to nearby US markets, notably the Gulf Coast and Southeast. Stare-owned and private Jamaican industrial minerals producers have made limited sales to date but expect to increase exports during the balance of the 1980s. Restraints include Jamaican government controls on access to essential foreign exchange for new capital investments and distribution of profits. Jamaican efforts to identify market opportunities in the US are reviewed, and the outlook for further exports of carbonates is discussed.

In designing mine workings and adequate roof supports, it is indispensable to determine properties of the strata surrounding the workings. The proper selection of roof supports is based, before everything else, on a thorough knowledge of the roof rock strength, especially tensile strength. This parameter is a vital factor in the delamination of roof rocks and eventual cave-in. It is also important to know the properties of the floor on which the roof supports are set. While driving galleries, it is essential to know beforehand the strength of rocks that will be encountered in the near future during the work. The devices described will help to obtain this information.
