"The authors have proposed a unique methodology in the evaluation of rock mass stiffness for the range of five to twenty meters ahead of the tunnel face, with the use of small diameter inclinometers. The inclinometers are installed at the tunnel crown at a pre-determined constant interval, about one meter behind the face in order to obtain the slight change in inclination angles during tunnel excavation. This method was developed as a daily control measurement such that the geological condition and its possible change ahead of the face could be detected early by monitoring the trend of inclination angles. This paper describes the results of the ground stiffness ahead of the tunnel face evaluated at a mountain tunnel construction site. This stiffness is evaluated automatically and displayed visually by the current system equipped with a result display screen, together with a warning message against a weak zone when detected. 1. INTRODUCTION In a conventional planning of a mountain tunnel, according to the Japanese Standard (JSCE, 2006) seismic refraction surveys from the ground surface are performed and tunnel support patterns are then designed based on the seismic wave velocity. The resolution of the velocity profile estimated by this technique, however, is poor as the tunnel overburden becomes large. The tunnel face is therefore often encountered by unforeseeable fault zones or weak rocks. Such an unpredictable weak zone occasionally causes the collapse of the tunnel face. Clarifying the forward geological information during excavation is hence significant for safe and well-controlled construction. According to the geological conditions ahead of a face, auxiliary methods typified by forepiling and face bolting could be preliminarily prepared for prompt execution. For the purpose of acquiring forward geological information, pilot borehole drilling and seismic reflection methods represented by the TSP (Tunnel Seismic Prediction) or HSP (Horizontal Seismic Profiling) are often applied. Those exploration are carried out near the tunnel face for a couple of days. This often leads to the interruption of excavation procedure and has no small effect on the construction schedule. On the other hand, some forward ground prediction methods in the daily control measurement have been developed e.g. by Schubert et al. (1995). In this method, tunnel displacements in the direction of the tunnel axis are used together with the crown settlements. We have tested their method at a few of our tunnel projects and found difficulty in the evaluation of the forward ground condition due to insufficient resolution of the axial displacement measured by a total station theodolite that we usually use for the tunnel measurement. We have therefore developed a novel methodology of monitoring slight inclination at the tunnel crown near the face, so that the forward ground conditions can be predicted and evaluated as part of a routine measurement procedure."

The traditional way of generating open-pit mine production schedules has several limitations. This work addresses the design and production-scheduling problem by considering minimum operational space requirements under a Direct Block Scheduling approach to generate extraction sequences that satisfy the operational space required. For this, traditional formulations were extended by including a new set of constraints that generate operating spaces for mining equipment to move and extract material. Then, a heuristic algorithm produces close to optimal practical pushbacks. This proposal was applied in a case study, and the results show its ability to generate practical production schedules without sacrificing expected return, obtaining differences in terms of Net Present Value (NPV) lower than 1% when compared to the traditional approach.

The risk of TBM jamming because of squeezing rock mass or excessive caving (instability of the cavity) conditions is always a focal point while boring long and deep tunnels with shielded TBMs. Mechanized excavation provides a large amount of real-time data, for each machine’s parameters. Several analyses have been executed to assess the correlations between different sets of TBM parameters for the exploratory tunnel. Instead of analyzing the full dataset, a different approach is proposed, with data processed sequentially to simulate the real excavation situation. The probability distributions are recalculated together with their statistical parameters while advancing. This approach is extended also to the training of a Machine Learning model able to foresee the behavior at future rings based on past rings (using a Recurrent Neural Network). The predictions show a promising first step toward creating practical tools that can assist contractors and designers to correlate and predict TBM excavation data. These tools will assist to predict and quantify high risk situations that could arise during excavation.

Following closure of an old asbestos mine in Zidani, Kozani Prefecture, Greece, the geotechnical and environmental restoration of the tailings slopes was required. The geotechnical aspects of the restoration included the formation of gentler slopes to increase stability, in combination with drainage works for the same purpose. The environmental aspects of the restoration included covering the slopes with successive layers of soil in order to minimize infiltration of rainwater, and hence the potential for further transport of asbestos fibers, and to provide a suitable layer for revegetation of the slope. The paper presents results of slope stability evaluation using both limit equilibrium and finite element analyses and raises some issues related to reducing impacts to the geoenvironment when designing such restoration projects.

Many long conveyors, 2 - 20 km plus, have been installed over the past 10 years. Conveyor belt life, depending on the conveyor length and material handled, will generally range from 10 - 15 years. To replace long conveyors splicing one or two rolls into a conveyor run on an intermittent basis can be prolonged in an operating system involving considerable downtime and scheduling problems. This paper presents some of the methods used to- date and highlights forward planning for such an event. Special belt handling equipment required and the execution of a belt change operation are described in detail. Wright Engineers Limited have worked in collaboration with Canada Conveyor to design and implement the methods described herein.

Zimbabwe The Republic of Zimbabwe is situated in south central Africa and north of the Tropic of Capricorn. The country is land-locked, bounded on the north by Zambia, on the south by the Republic of South Africa, on the east by Mozambique and on the southwest by Botswana. Nearly 400,000 sq km in area, Zimbabwe is bigger than both France and Spain and nearly three times the size of England. The outstanding physical feature is the central plateau, known as the highveld, which is about 650 km long and 80 km wide at an elevation of +1,200 m, and on which the Jena Mines is located. Because of its elevation and inland position, Zimbabwe's climate is temperate, generally drier and cooler than is normally expected in the tropics. Zimbabwe's population is in excess of 10 million. English is the official language, with Ndebele and Shona being the main ethnic languages. About one million people live in Greater Harare, the capital city. The basic unit of currency is the Zimbabwe dollar, which has depreciated substantially over the past few years. Currently (November, 1995), the exchange rate is $US 1.00 = $Zim 9.00, compared with $US 1 .OO = $Zim 2.50 in 1991. Project Area The Jena Mines Complex is situated in central Zimbabwe (Figure 1), in the Silobela area of the lower Gweru River valley. The mine site is 270 km from Harare by paved and gravel road. The Jena Mines property consists of a single rectangular (8 km by 5 km) shaped mining lease with an area of approximately 40 sq km (Figure 2). Annual average precipitation is 720 mm falling in the summer months between October and April. Mean daily maximum temperature is 24°C in October and mean minimum is 14°C in July. The southern parts of Zimbabwe have experienced drought conditions over the past four years which has affected water and power supplies. The countryside in the Jena area is generally low relief with a gentle slope to the northwest. The mine site topography is flat with an average elevation of 1,210 m. Zimbabwe Mining Industry Zimbabwe has a long mining tradition, particularly for gold. In the 1,200 years preceding European colonization, it is estimated that about 4,000 ancient mines produced between 600 and 800 tonnes of gold. Since the turn of the century more than 1,700 tonnes of gold have been produced. An excellent infrastructure has developed to support the mining industry. This includes a well- maintained system of paved roads, railway links to major mining areas, an electricity grid covering most of the country, and numerous industries manufacturing a wide range of mining supplies. Jena History The claims in the Jena Mines area are among the earliest registered in Zimbabwe. The gold potential was easily recognized because of extensive ancient (pre-European) workings. European trading beads from the 14th Century have been recovered from anthills in the mine area. Development of the Jena Mines commenced in 1898 and several mines have operated intermittently over the past 90 years. Introduction Fracture mechanics is the study of the behavior of cracks and their modes of propagation. During cracking, energy is consumed in creating new surface area. The more energy a material absorbs, the higher is its fracture resistance. This fracture energy is provided either by work done externally, by the release of elastic strain energy within the cracked body, or by a combination of these two effects. Fracture resistance is measured in terms of either the stress intensity factor, K, or the energy release rate (also referred to as crack driving force), G. For linearly elastic materials, these two quantities are related by the following equation: [ ] where [u] is Poisson's ratio and E is the modulus of elasticity. Both K and G are direct functions of the applied force and the crack length. The process of rock cutting with full-face tunnel boring machines (TBMs) involves the indentation of a rock surface by rolling disc tools. Excavation occurs as fractures, extending from the locus of chip indentation, propagate between concentric disc grooves and liberate rock chips from the intact rock face. Since disc cutting is achieved by a fracture process, it is logical to anticipate that differences in cuttability of a variety of rocks should be related to the variation of fracture material properties among the rocks. Such a relation has been demonstrated between the performance of full-face TBMs and the critical crack driving force for excavation in relatively high strength, brittle, low porosity, isotropic rock (Nelson et al., 1985). The objective of this paper is to report on the results of a continued investigation of the relationship between fracture material properties and the effectiveness of disc cutting. Additional reliable data on full-face TBM performance is difficult to obtain, so that the results of disc linear cutter tests performed by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory (TRRL) (U.K.) are utilized in this study. Fracture Material Property Evaluation If a crack tip is subjected to a perfectly plain strain condition, many materials will behave in a brittle manner, and the material resistance to fracture is constant during crack growth. This resistance is referred to as the plain strain fracture toughness, believed to be a material property. The standard testing procedure for this parameter is given in the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) test designation E399. To ensure plain strain conditions, acceptable specimen geometries are specified. Unless these geometric specifications are adhered to, the measured fracture resistance is regarded as the apparent fracture toughness, and a subscript Q is used, as [ ]. The methodology adopted by ASTM E399 is within the framework of Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM). This approach assumes that material resistance against cracking is developed instantaneously, without initial stable or subcritical crack extension. Prior to crack advancement in rock, however, much of the crack driving energy is absorbed in a localized volume in front of the crack tip, referred to as the plasticity or microcracking zone. This capability for energy absorption substantially increases material resistance, and a crack may be arrested unless an increased crack driving force is applied. The LEFM or plain strain assumptions would underestimate the actual fracture resistance of such a material. Such a conservative approximation may be desirable in the design of structures against fatigue or brittle failure. In mining or tunneling, however, an underestimation of crack resistance can lead to the selection of underrated excavation equipment and a decrease in production efficiency. The development of fracture resistance in rock is best described by the material resistance curve, or R-curve, which is a plot of fracture resistance as a function of crack extension. Typically, peak resistance is only reached after a finite amount of subcritical crack growth. The

The mining business has numerous risks: equipment availability, labor disruptions, foreign exchange rate, etc., but one of the more important risks is assessing the geology. Improving the “intelligence” of geology can and will have significant positive effect on reducing mining risk and thus enhancing operational and financial performance. The use of the advanced Radio Imaging Method (RIM-IV) on coal seams and ore bodies can create useful two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) high-resolution images that provide mining engineers with additional intelligence to better plan and improve operations. Improved operational performance will reduce costs and enable mining companies to meet market and financial commitments. For the past decade the underground coal mining industry has been moving toward “super panels” in long-wall mining, and “super sections” for room-and-pillar mining. These mining conventions employ wider faces, longer gate roads, greater room-and-pillar density, and an increased scale in the amount and complexity of mining equipment. An obvious economy of scale exists: amortization of setup investments over greater volume of coal enables mine management to reduce fixed cost per ton. Restricted by equipment considerations, face widths have currently reached about 1,100 ft. Wider longwall panels are planned, with 1,400-ft widths, but this requires an incremental step in hardware that the original equipment manufacturers will soon bring to market. However, longwall panel length has not yet reached its limits, with some panels planned up to 25,000 ft. While longwall panel length is generally dictated by reserve size and extent, practical restrictions in mine planning also include seam thickness, ventilation requirements, or restrictions involving methane drainage. Super panels have certainly enabled the industry to keep pushing the limits of productivity improvement. However, important considerations in mine planning, now and especially in the future, will be driven in large part by geological factors. While larger developments improve productivity and capture economies of scale, the fact that super panels can contain at least four times the area or coal volume means that the probability of encountering serious anomalies is at least four times greater than with the “conventional” panels. Given the increased probability of encountering anomalies, improved assessment of geology is important for super panels and super sections. Proper due diligence requires a thorough and competent evaluation of a mining property and its ore reserve. Using improved geostatistical techniques is most important, and improving the base data for the analysis is equally important. The old cliché “garbage in, garbage out” certainly applies. Also, the quality of coal reserves is (or has been) declining, so, in the future, mining will be in deeper and most likely thinner seams—and these seams appear to contain greater anomalies that threaten efficient operations. To counter the impact of reserve deterioration, the industry is moving toward greater use of geophysical tools and services. Fortunately, tools such as the Radio Imaging Method™ (RIM-IV) system have been improved and can provide the industry with enhanced 2-D and 3-D images of coal seams and ore bodies. To identify and profile the best areas of a coal reserve, geologists, engineers, and mine managers need greater intelligence in the form of RIM-IV tomographic maps of longwall panels and room-and-pillar sections. These images have enhanced the understanding of in-seam features, which in turn has improved operational plans and performance.

The Pyke asbestos deposits were discovered by Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd. in 1969 during the course of base metal exploration on the South Island of New Zealand. Extensive occurrences of chrysotile asbestos were found associated with the Red Mountain ultramafics in the headwaters of the Pyke River, and to the north and south along the ultramafic belt for a distance of 70 km. Surface evaluation and drilling by Kennecott in 1970 and 1971 identified numerous small deposits of good grade fiber in the Little Red Hills between the Pyke and Barrier Rivers. Additional drilling and three adits have been completed by other companies since that time. The property is presently held by Lime and Marble, Ltd., of Nelson, New Zealand, and Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd. This chapter presents the regional and local setting of the asbestos deposits, including the geology and nature of mineralization. In addition, the exploration methods used by Kennecott in the discovery and evaluation of these deposits are outlined. Subsequent work by other companies is mentioned, but not de- scribed in detail. This subsequent work did not alter Kennecott's conclusions or produce any serious changes in the interpretation of geology and mineralization. The author acknowledges the contribution of the many employees of Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Pty. Ltd. who have been involved in the project. In particular, thanks go to Ramon Farmer, N.G. Corner, and A.W. McConie, who were responsible for completion of field work and reporting on the project. The responsibility for the conclusions and interpretations of this chapter are solely that of the author and result from his involvement in the discovery of the deposits and management of the exploration program. REGIONAL SETTING Ultramafic rocks on the South Island of New Zealand are thought to be Permian in age and occur between crystaIline and metamorphic continental rocks of Precambrian through Cretaceous age in the west, are thought to have once been part of the Antarctic subcontinent, and the extensive geosynclinal graywacke deposits of the Mesozoic New Zealand geosyncline in the east. They consist of the Dun Mountain ultramafics, a 130 km long segment of ultramafic rocks located at the north end of the South Island, and the Red Mountain ul- tramafics that occur in a zone 200 km long in the south half of the South Island as shown in Fig. 1. These two belts, once contiguous, have been offset a distance of 560 km by the still active Al- pine fault, which is analogous in character and offset to the San Andreas fault of the United States. The ultramafic rocks occur within a sequence of Permotriassic volcanic and sedimentary rocks that probably formed at the eastern margin of the continental plate. The ultramafics appear to be tectonically emplaced between Permian lithologies in the Dun Mountain belt (Coleman, 1966), and at the base of or between Permian volcanics and sediments in the Red Mountain belt. The Permotriassic ultramafic volcanic sequence of the Red Mountain ultramafic belt appears to be a typical ophiolite sequence. Ultramafic rocks, mixed mafic intrusive rocks and volcanics, volcanic rocks, and volcanoclastic sediments occur in apparent superposition from east to west in the area of Red Mountain. Farther south, ultramafic rocks are associated with basaltic volcanic rocks and some sediments, and still farther south are emplaced entirely in sediments. These structural compIications of the normal ophiolite sequence have resulted from the coincidence of Permian subduction, early Mesozoic extension and sedimentation, and Cretaceous subduction along the same plate margin (Landis and Bishop, 1972). INTRODUCTION This chapter on underground rotary drills briefly describes the equipment features, selection or applica¬tion criteria, safety features, and relative costs of both face and roof drills. After a brief description of the basic components, the application, safety, and cost con¬siderations will be explored. ROTARY DRILL COMPONENTS As illustrated in Fig. 1, an underground rotary drill consists of five basic components. These components are the energy system, chassis, boom, feed assembly, and operator's station. Energy System The energy system of a typical underground drill con¬sists of an electric motor, driving a hydraulic pump or pumps. Usually, the drill is equipped with a cable reel to store the trailing power cable from the portable power center in the mine. A simple control box is supplied to house electrical switchgear and protective devices. In addition to the pump, the hydraulic portion of the energy system includes the hydraulic cylinders, hydraulic tram motors, relief valves, control valves, etc., necessary to actuate the various machine functions. Chassis The chassis provides the frame or support structure for the other four basic components of the drill. Fre¬quently, it incorporates an oil reservoir for the hydraulic system. The chasis provides the support for the trans¬mission, which drives rubber tires or, in the case of some foreign machines, the crawler tracks. The steering link¬age and steering tires also may be considered as parts of the chassis. Boom The boom is the structure that supports the feed assembly; it is either hinged or pivoted on the front of the chassis. Hydraulic cylinders on the boom are used to lift or swing the boom relative to the chassis and to swivel or "roll" the feed assembly. Feed Assembly The feed assembly is made up of the support struc¬ture with an integral thrust mechanism, a rotation unit, centralizers to stabilize the auger, and a hose handling arrangement. In addition, most drills have an extension frame with a tilt device to aid in positioning the feed. Operator's Station The operator's station is the area from which the miner operates the drill. UNDERGROUND ROTARY DRILL APPLICATIONS Underground Face Drills Underground face drills are used in mining opera¬tions that utilize the conventional mining system. The face drill is used to drill holes in the exposed face of the material, and the face is then "shot" by means of explo¬sives or high pressure air. The loose material then is ready for loading and transporting from the face to the preparation plant. Typical specifications for under¬ground face drills are listed in Table 1. Certain parameters should be established as to where the drill is to be used and what is expected of it. To create an awareness of some of the considerations that too often are overlooked, some questions are listed that should be asked in conjunction with the selection or application of the proposed drills. Energy System: Can the drill be supplied with the proper voltage to match the available or proposed elec¬trical power system of the mine? Is the system 250, 460, 500, 550, or 950 v; dc or ac; 3-phase; 60 or 50 Hz? Is the drill equipped with an adequate electric motor to handle the proposed duty cycle? Acknowledgments I am honored to be named as a recipient of the Antoine M. Gaudin Award, and I would like to briefly single out four groups who deserve a special thank-you relative to this award. The first group consists of Professor Kawatra, the many international support references that he gathered and the Gaudin Committee itself. I know such things don't come without considerable effort by many individuals, and I'm grateful for their support. The second group consists of the management of The Dow Chemical Company, the managements of various mining companies and, in recent years, the management of G. S. Technologies, all of whom supported me, financially and otherwise, in my grinding, flotation and other particle-processing work. Operations people are the most overworked and under recognized people in the world, whether they be in the mining or chemical industry. Obviously, without extensive industrial support, especially from operating personnel in the mining industry, almost nothing about the work contained in this lecture would have, or could have, happened. The third group consists of a number of coworkers who have played key roles in specifically implementing the new flotation-product portion of this lecture. Of these, Bob Hansen, Don Leonard, Basil Fee, Simon Isherwood, Fernando Cones and Marty Meulendyke deserve special recognition. They have not only been dedicated, but they have been great to work with. Also in this third group are many members of the international academic community, especially those at Penn State. Professor Leonard Austin must be singled out because he took me as a young mathematically oriented chemist and taught me to be an effective process-oriented engineer. Without this experience, I would not have had the over 30-year career as an engineer, which I have loved. In addition, Len planted the size-reduction-research virus in my blood, which I can't seem to get rid of. I also need to mention Professor Frank Aplan, whose obvious love of mineral processing and froth flotation helped to create my interest in flotation. Thus, for those of you who don't like my approach to flotation, it's all Frank's fault. The fourth, and certainly not the least, group to thank is my wife, Charlene, and our two sons, Richard and Steven. No one could have a more supportive family. In every sense of the word, my wife has been my partner from the beginningwe were married at the end of my freshman year in college. She has sacrificed much for me, and I will never really be able to express the depth of my gratitude for Charlene's encouragement, loyalty and support over the past 36 years. General comments on froth flotation The industrial process of froth flotation: Where is it going? I'm here to tell you loud and clear that froth flotation is alive, well, and growing. The inherent characteristics of high mineral throughput per unit of capital, low operating cost per unit of feed, high mineral specificity and high operating flexibility have guaranteed froth flotation an important past and a growing future. As with any evolving technology, there are always trends at the industrial level that are primarily driven by economics. Most of the bauxite deposits in Europe belong to the karst type. They are located mainly ill Southern Europe along the Mediterranean Sea and in the Ural Mountains. Lateritic bauxite deposits occur on the Russian Platform, in Poland, Northern Ireland and in Turkey. Tikhvin-type deposits arc found on the Russian Platform. Bauxite formation in Europe started in the Middle Devonian. The main bauxite forming period was the Upper Cretaceous. Very few bauxites are younger than Eocene. Most deposits are covered by overburden of up to 1000 m. Prospecting is carried out by drilling. Several geophysical methods are used to detect the hidden deposits. Geostatistical methods were introduced in several countries for evaluation of the reserves and the geometry of the deposits. Data on bauxite production are given for 1982 and since the beginning of mining in Europe.

The selective recovery of fine particles by flotation has been a long-standing problem in the mineral processing industry. Fundamental studies carried out at Virginia Tech since 1980 have suggested that many of the problems encountered in separating fine particles can be alleviated by using significantly smaller air bubbles than those used in conventional flotation processes. The main advantage of using smaller bubbles is found in an increased recovery rate, which can be attributed to an improved bubble-particle collision efficiency. This concept has been applied in column flotation as a means of improving flotation kinetics. A computer simulator has been developed to better study the effects of various parameters on flotation column performance. The simulation results suggest that the use of small bubbles and tall columns improves the recovery of fine particles while a judicious use of wash water greatly improves product quality. Information collected as a result of this analysis has been applied in developing scale-up relationships for column flotation.

Induction time is often referred to the time required to form a stable three-phase contact between a gas bubble and a flat or droplet surface in a liquid medium. It can be used to quantify the attachment process in aflotation system. Various techniques have been developed to measure this important parameter. Due to its importance in flotation systems and other processes, significant advances in refining the induction time measurement techniques have recently been made. This paper summarizes these recent advances and describes a novel method developed to monitor bubble attachment to a pendant bitumen drop or bitumen-coated flat surface. This visualization-based method offers a higher sensitivity and accuracy than the previously developed apparatuses in the induction time measurement. As an example, the induction time for oxygen bubble-bitumen attachment was measured at a fixed bubble size as a function of temperature in two different aqueous solutions. The results showed that higher process temperature is favorable for oxygen bubble-bitumen attachment and hence bitumen flotation. Addition of calcium to the aqueous solution slightly decreased induction time.

The purpose of the panel's examination of coal mining research and development is to explore how the various groups that make up this research community might work together more efficiently and be more productive. The community, as defined here, includes federal and state governments, coal producers, manufacturers, unions, universities, and industry sponsored research organizations. The framework chosen for these discussions consists of brief presentations by the panel members on their views of the proper role and function of the group they represent. The panel members were also asked to highlight the economic, technical and institutional constraints that affect the performance of research and development and the use of the results. Following these presentations, a number of prepared questions will be discussed by the panel, and audience participation is invited. These questions were given several weeks ago to the panel members for their study. Before proceeding with the panel member reports, a brief review of the importance of R&D to the coal mining industry would be helpful to setting the stage for a constructive dialogue. It is appropriate to begin this review by mentioning that there is complete agreement among the research community that the major goals are: Improve health and safety Protect the environment Increase capital and labor productivity Increase resource recovery Since the basic functions of the academic, industrial and government sectors are different, we should expect that the research and development objectives and priorities, roles and responsibilities under each major goal will be different for each research group. The differences do not represent problem areas. However, problems will arise if the objectives are not properly interfaced at the appropriate time. The consequences of railing to understand the need for integrated programs will be the classic result, best described by the phrase --"a technical success but a commercial failure."

In metallurgical applications, coal fulfills dual roles as a chemical feed stock and as a fuel source. These applications range from cokemaking, ironrnaking (including pulverized coal injection), foundry, basic oxygen furnace / electric arc furnace coal additions, direct ironrnaking, Corex, and the futuristic direct steelmaking. In all steelmaking related processes, chemical reactions are simultaneously temperature and chemical dependent. Therefore, coals used in these processes must consistently comply with specific quality parameters in order to promote efficient operations. This paper limits discussion of Metallurgical Coal Quality to cokemaking and ironmaking applications. Its purpose is to present the customer's perspective on the control of critical coal and coke properties.

Seismic monitoring is one of the few noninvasive technologies with the potential to provide sub-surface geomechanical information to operators of large open-pit mines. Although passive seismic data has been used to refine emerging failure geometries and provide advance indication of surface deformations in the literature, doing so reliably in an operational context is much more difficult. This is due in part to difficulties in estimating and interpreting source locations and parameters in complex, low-stress open-pit environments. Additionally, the high costs associated with implementing, operating, and maintaining deep borehole seismic networks, which are most commonly used to monitor large open pits, can be difficult to justify, especially if monitoring benefits are not readily apparent. In this study, we explore the use of a near-surface nodal seismic deployment, which is commonly used in oil and gas exploration, for monitoring open-pit mining-related seismicity on a short-term basis. A deployment of 18 geophones was conducted on the surface in and around the Bingham Canyon Mine, a large open-pit mine near Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, where we find the small seismic array can detect and locate a variety of mining-related seismic sources, even with an extremely simplified velocity model. We outline the process of creating an idealized velocity model, developing a local magnitude scale, and interpreting the observed seismicity. Of note, we analyze a sequence of mining-induced events associated with a known structure on the south pit wall. We conclude with discussion on how surface-based deployments may be used to augment, or in some cases supplant, borehole seismic networks at large open-pit mines depending on monitoring requirements and objectives.

An acceptable source of concrete aggregate is available in Kansas City in a continuous, medium bedded, slightly dipping limestone unit. Removal is accomplished in shallow depth, 12 feet to 17 feet high, room and pillar mines. The accepted empirical design spaces 20 foot pillars 60 feet on center. A portion of the 20 foot unit is left in place for roof support. Rock and soil cover is variable to 100± feet maximum. Long-term stability of these mines is affected by numerous factors, including the above mine-rock profile, ground water conditions and mining practice. Crusher-run aggregate sells at the mine for $2.20 per ton, yielding a gross income of $2.00 to $2.80 per square foot of mine. Use of mine space for real estate development requires a new perspective in mine development. Mining practices to obtain long term stabile structures can become an over-riding factor as compared with minimum production costs and maximum extraction ratios. Poorly mined areas are unusuable for secondary purposes. Development cost for lease space in less desirable mines is substantially greater than those planned for a secondary use. Real estate development in mine space involves unique engineering problems. Properly engineered developments offer singular advantages. Warehouse lease space sells for $.50 to $1.00 per square foot per year; fully developed office areas may double these values.

Leaching or solution mining, a relatively simple and economical process for beneficiating metallic ores, is likely to find increasing application in the treatment of low-grade ores that are impractical to mine by any other means. This process may be carried out in two different ways: 1. Dump leaching, where the ore is moved from its original location to be leached at another site. 2. In situ leaching, where the ore is leached in place by introducing the leach solution at the top, letting it flow down through the ore under gravity, and then recovering it plus the dissolved metals it contains.

Daily everyone depends on the great variety of glass products, so much so that glass is often taken for granted. In fact most people do not realize how versatile glass has become. Consider the various uses and then try to imagine a day in which we are not influenced by glass. Common uses include container ware, table ware, window glass, lead crystal, automobile glass, and fiber glass. Several less common, but important, uses include laboratory ware, pharmaceutical, TV bulbs, light bulbs, glass ceramics, optical glass, fiber optics, and laser glass. Corning, Inc., a leader in specialty products, uses nearly 1 000 different compositions to manufacture about 60 000 different products (Edwards and Copley, 1977). Glass is such a complex product that-definitions vary and exceptions can be found for most definitions. Glass is an inorganic amorphous (non-crystalline) solid. Most glasses are produced by melting of a mixture of oxide raw materials, and then cooled to room temperature. Soda-lime-silica composition.s account for about 90% of all glasses melted (Anon, 1973). The properties of the glass product come mainly from its chemical composition. All of the different glasses require melting a combination of raw materials and forming the molten material into the desired shape. Both the melting and the forming processes use sophisticated technology and these technologies require experts to manage these production systems. The manufacturing process is continuous and takes place in tonnage quantities, so adjustments in the batch to achieve the desired finished product requires a great deal of expertise. Raw materials are fed to the batch mixing area in very large quantities (tons in most cases). As a result, impurities in the range of 0.1% result in addition of that impurity within the molten glass in kilogram amounts. More than twenty different industrial minerals are consumed in the manufacture of various kinds of glass (O'Driscoll, 1990). This chapter describes the major and minor ingredients of the various glass batches. It discusses the roles of the various oxides in the glass batch and most importantly considers the mineral raw materials which supply the glass industry. Each of the raw materials is described in detail in other chapters so the geology and mineralogy sections are kept brief here. Container glass, by far, accounts for the most production; followed by flat glass, fiber glass, and specialty glass of which table ware accounts for the greatest tonnage. [Table 1] shows the general production data for 1987 through 1990. Statistics for many of the uses do not appear because production volumes are small compared to the major uses. The glass industry is organized in four categories: containers, flat glass, fiber glass and specialty glass. The US Department of Commerce, Bureau of Census, publishes production data about the glass industry in three different categories: 1) glass containers, 2) consumer, scientific, technical and industrial glassware, and 3) flat glass. The Bureau has very complete statistics about the glass industry in these three categories but they report production data in different units according to industry standards. Therefore, [Table 1] gives the production data in dissimilar units. The production of most glass articles follows similar steps. The raw materials are mixed and the resulting batch is fed into the furnace. In soda-lime-silica glasses melting begins between 600 and 900°C. At these temperatures CO, and other gasses are released which create bubbles in the molten glass. To remove the bubbles and insure complete melting the temperature is raised to between 1 500 and 1 600°C. This is the melting-refining stage during which the refining agents in the glass batch serve to aid in the release of gas bubbles, homogenize the melt, and prevent the formation of scum on the surface of the molten liquid. At the conclusion of the melting-refining stage the glass is too fluid for working and the melt is cooled to about 1 100°C to attain the proper viscosity for working and forming to begin. After the glass article has been made, it must undergo annealing (slowly and uniformly reheated and cooled) to remove thermal stresses that were created during the forming process.
