Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) performed a series of lab tests to evaluate the respirable dust removal capacity of an industrial air-cleaning fan. Limestone and coal dust were tested separately in NIOSH’s full-scale drill table simulator at the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD). Gravimetric samplers with Dorr-Oliver Cyclones and 37-mm filters were used at two upstream and four downstream locations inside and outside of the drill shroud chamber. There were six tests performed for both the limestone and coal dust experiments. In the limestone tests, an average respirable dust concentration of 98.86 mg/m3 was achieved upstream of the air-cleaning fan. The filter results show that the averaged respirable limestone dust reductions were 7.84%, 8.81%, 10.94%, and 18.02% at the four sampling locations downstream of the fan. In the coal tests, upstream samplers achieved an average of 129.03 mg/m3 of respirable coal dust. The averaged dust reductions were 9.54%, 9.83%, 18.54%, and 19.21% at the four downstream sampling points. The results indicate limited cost benefits of using this technology because of the relatively low dust reductions determined from this laboratory study.

The paper by Lewis and Braun l presents experimental and calculational evidence that primary chalcopyrite ores are rapidly oxidized by warm oxygen-bearing water. Resulting solutions contained copper sulfate products of the matrix rock decomposition such as magnesium sulfate and sulphuric acid. Iron was oxidized to insoluble hematite and hydrous iron sulfates. Oxygen injection near the base of a broken and permeable flooded ore deposit was calculated to cause circulation of oxidizing solutions to the entire permeable region. The rate of dissolution of copper and degree of oxygen saturation for given oxygen injection rates were presented. Their work suggests that in-situ recovery of deep, disseminate primary copper deposits is technically feasible. The actual feasibility depends on economics and environmental safety as well, and it is the purpose of this paper to address these two aspects.

"It is well known that froth visual features reflect the operating conditions of the flotation process, so that being able to accurately obtain the froth properties is the most significant criteria to optimize and control this process. Froth segmentation is a useful procedure that can determine the bubble size distribution. Several algorithms have been proposed in this field, but marker-based watershed transform shows the best performance. In spite of this fact, the algorithm suffers from oversegmentation in cases when the flotation froth includes large bubbles along with small ones. In the paper, the marker-based watershed method is modified to prevent oversegmentation of large bubbles. The developed algorithm is validated using some froth images captured at different operating conditions, so the results indicate that the method can segment the mixture of big and small bubbles effectively.IntroductionFroth flotation is a widely used process for separating valuable from gangue minerals. Effective control of flotation circuits has a dramatic effect on overall performance of a mineral processing plant. In most flotation plants, process operators monitor the froth surface visually and make adjustments to process parameters based on their interpretation of the surface appearance and their idea of the appearance of an ideal froth. However, due to natural complexity of the flotation process, achieving optimal control is often not possible for human operators.In recent years, attempts have been made to control the flotation circuits using machine vision systems (Moolman et al., 1995; 1996a,b; Bartolacci et al., 2006; Kaartinen et al., 2006; Vanegas and Holtham, 2008; Aldrich et al., 2010). The froth bubble size distribution is the most significant control variable that reflects the operating conditions in a flotation machine. To date, a number of approaches have been proposed for bubble size measurement from froth images, including segmentation (Sadr-kazemi and Cilliers, 1997; Wang et al., 2003; Mehrshad and Massinaei, 2011), texture spectrum (Nguyen and Thornton, 1995), wavelet (Liu et al., 2005), an improved texture spectrum approach, a method based on binary images (Lin et al., 2008) and, finally, using interfacial morphological information (Yang et al., 2009)."

Dolomite is an objectionable impurity in phosphate ores, due to its MgO content. Even though dolomite and apatite liberate at a coarse size, the very similar densities of dolomite and apatite makes density separations difficult. However, if operated correctly, jigging can be a very efficient process. This has led to the development of a unique laboratory scale jig that allows for easy alteration of effective jigging properties. Key jigging parameters have been investigated for the separation of dolomite from phosphate ores. It was found that a pulsation rate of approximately 200 pulses/minute worked best for separating dolomite from apatite.

The wetting behavior of liquid polymers at solid surfaces and the adhesion forces involved at polymer-filler interfaces should always be considered in the fabrication of high quality polymer composites, including those made with mineral fillers. Spontaneous polymer spreading over the filler surface is a basic condition in the fabrication of the polymer-mineral composites. In this regard, the wetting and adhesion characteristics of polymer-mineral systems are reviewed in this contribution. It appears that several aspects of wetting phenomena at mineral filler surfaces are not well described in the literature and require further systematic study. Specifically, it is clear from this review that efforts should be made to determine the effects of mineral surface contamination (including surface hydration) on wetting and adhesion phenomena, and to determine the wetting characteristics of molten polymers at mineral filler surfaces. It is expected that any improved fundamental understanding of wetting and adhesion phenomena for the polymer-mineral composites will provide the basis for further technological development.

Universities and colleges in three countries -Australia, Canada and the United States, recognized the need to establish and reorganize geoscience programs at the vocational and two-year technical levels. To accomplish this goal, a cooperative study with industry in one state or province from each country was initiated. These include 1) Tasmania, Australia, 2) British Columbia, Canada and 3) Alaska, United States. Over one hundred mineral exploration companies and private consultants cooperated in the study by providing information regarding their specific training needs for support personnel, the data gathered has been used to identify training area for semi-skilled, skilled and technical personnel in geophysics, including, but not limited to, geo-logical skills, geophysical skills, surveying skills, environ-mental skills, and computer skills. With areas of major educational need defined for geophysical exploration, an educational field skills model has been developed for the three levels of training. The depth of each level of education and the training objectives for the work force at each level will he discussed.

Sublevel caving operation relies on the estimation of ore grade at drawpoints, as the mine management uses grade to decide whether the material at a certain ring should be loaded or abandoned. Grade is estimated in various ways, including visual estimation, density-based calculation, and sampling and assay methods. The grade estimation at the world’s two largest underground iron ore mines owned by LKAB in northern Sweden is based on the density difference between ore and waste. The calculations assume a constant swell factor, a theoretical fill of 100%, and a linear relationship between bucket weight and material grade. This study evaluated these assumptions in detail based on the loading data for 12,237 buckets and concluded that the method has some shortcomings which render the assumptions invalid. Further research is required to deal with these shortcomings to improve estimation of the material grade.

During the last decade, the feasibility of applying the in situ leaching technology to the recovery of copper from deeply buried deposits containing chalcopyrite has received much attention.(1-4) The major incentive for using this technology is that under certain circumstances, copper in deep underground deposits, which cannot be mined economically by conventional means, can be recovered economically. Basically, this technology involves rubblization of the deeply buried copper ore body followed by in-place leaching of the rubblized copper ores. Rubblization of the ore can be achieved by some suitable method such as the use of block caving mining. The rubblized chimney is then filled with water until the original water level is reached. Leaching occurs when the eater saturated with oxygen is introduced into the chimney- and flows through the fractured rock masses and within pores of rocks. As the dissolved oxygen oxidizes the primary sulfides, heat is generated. Because of low conductivity of the surrounding rocks, the generated heat is able to raise the temperature of the chimney. The increase in the temperature of the chimney and the relatively high content of dissolved oxygen in the leach solution under high hydrostatic pressure will result in an enhanced dissolution of the primary sulfide minerals. To ensure a successful application of the in situ leaching technology, a complete understanding of the effects of the ore particle size distribution, ore grade mineralogy, temperature, pressure, lixiviant concentration, pH, etc. on the rate of copper recovery is necessary so that copper can be recovered efficiently and the amount of copper extracted can be predicted. These can be achieved through mathematical modeling of the in situ leaching process and conducting laboratory tests. In this paper we will present a mathematical model that simulates the in situ leaching process as depicted in Figure 1. To model this process properly, not only the 'kinetic and thermodynamic aspects of leaching chemistry must be known, but the effects of heat generation, the physical aspect of fluid flow and other related multicomponent transport phenomena must be considered. Furthermore, since most factors involved in the leaching process change with time, a leaching system must be described using unsteady state equations.

"Over 600 longwall panels have been mined in Pennsylvania in the last 50 years. Of those 600 panels, 25 panels undermined interstate highways. Despite this quantity of panels, much is still unknown regarding the detailed effects of undermining highways. The Gateway Mine, the Emerald Mine, and the Cumberland Mine undermined I-79 with 17 panels between 1982–1989 and 2003–2008, respectively; mine Eighty-Four undermined I-70 with 4 panels between 1987–2000.Through the examination of the panels that undermined I-70 and I-79, it is possible to determine which factors have most impacted the highway alignments. In some locations, the highway intersects with panels at angles ranging from 45 to 80 degrees, and at others, it runs between two panels, which simulates the effect of gateroads on the subsidence. The panels width to overburden ratio varies between 0.64 and 1.7, meaning that the interstates were influenced by both subcritical and supercritical subsidence basins. The face advance rates and overburden depths also vary between the panels.Unfortunately, specific information detailing highway impacts associated with unique characteristics of the subsidence basins are limited. However, using the profile function model and influence function model within the Surface Deformation Prediction System (SDPS), the effects of overburden, panel size, and orientation of the road to highway can be indirectly assessed by profile and influence models of subsidence basin formation.INTRODUCTIONCoal mining has been an integral part of Pennsylvania’s history. Room-and-pillar mines have been active since the late-1700s when coal was extracted from outcrops. By 1830, the city of Pittsburgh alone consumed more than 400 tons of bituminous coal each day for domestic and industrial use (PADEP, 2019). In the late 1960s, the face of mining in Pennsylvania changed with the development of full extraction longwall mines. Since that development, over 600 longwall panels have been mined in the Pittsburgh Coalbed in Pennsylvania alone (PADEP, 2019).As longwall mining and other forms of full extraction mining have increased in popularity, the amount of planned subsidence impacting the surface has also increased. The stresses and strains induced by longwall subsidence can cause damage to the surface as well any structures, water supplies, or water bodies that lie above the panel. Since the behavior of soils and structures vary, one way to study the surface effects of longwall mining is to analyze the impact on flat, rigid, pavement surfaces. Examining factors that vary the impact of subsidence with respect to highway alignment can demonstrate the favorable orientation of an alignment to avoid or mitigate damage and critical impact zones in a subsidence basin."

The Eagle Mountain Mine of the Kaiser Steel Corporation is located in the California portion of the Colorado Desert at a distance of about 60 miles east of Indio, California. At the present time, this mine is producing at the rate of 5,000,000 tons of concentrate per year. A total of 1,000,000 tons of ore per year is presently being sold on the Japanese market while the remainder is consumed by the Kaiser Steel Company blast furnaces at Fontana, California. A new Pellet Plant and Concentrator is presently under, construction with completion scheduled for May or June 1965. This plant will have a rated capacity of 2,200,000 tons of pellets per year and essentially all of this production will be sold to Japanese steel companies.

This research aims to test the hypothesis that the low retention rate of women in the mining industry is caused by workplace culture and policies established due to gender segregation. A quasi-experiment is developed to determine the cause-and-effect relationship between gender segregation-inspired culture and the retention of women. The experiment considers the impact of the job type and the operational environment. The analysis provides information on factors that cause low retention of women in the industry, the extent to which gender segregation plays a role, and insights that allow actionable and measurable changes in the industry.

Recently, the North American mining industry experienced a severe recession, forcing managers to take dramatic steps to cut costs and compete in the difficult international market. Some of these steps were closing mines, reducing work forces, renegotiating wage agreements, and purchasing the most productive equipment. Managers are now looking beyond these traditional avenues and are focusing more on advanced technology. In the present environment, it is essential that mine operators obtain the maximum use of capital expended on equipment. However, mine workers do not obtain maximum efficiency or productivity from equipment because the adverse and hazardous mine environment impedes human performance. Also, the efficient use of large, complex machines calls for levels of precision that many times are beyond the capability of even highly trained miners. A possible solution to this problem is a machine that mines without operators - autonomous mining machines. However, numerous problems confront researchers who are attempting to develop such equipment. Some mining tasks are not always composed of a series of cyclic motions readily performed by factory floor robots. In addition, mining takes place in the geological environment where conditions are highly variable and unpredictable. As a result, these machines must be able to sense and adapt to variations in operating tasks and environment. Considerable autonomous vehicle research has been completed, especially for defense. However, autonomous vehicle (AV) technology has not advanced to practical application yet (King, 1988) and mining research is necessary in areas: representing mining specific knowledge; •analyzing and reasoning about sensor data in the mining environment; and •discovering completely new mining methods or new approaches to existing methods that become apparent when we remove the constraints imposed by the necessity of human operators. A specific machine, the LHD, can be used to show the problems for researchers who are attempting to develop autonomous machines for mining. This author chose the LHD because it can borrow concepts developed for autonomous navigation by military programs. But considerable mining research is also required. Furthermore, studies done at the Henderson mine, in Colorado, show autonomous LHD 's promise cost and safety benefits (King, 1988). At Henderson, LHDs load ore from draw points, tram to an ore pass, dump and return, or switch to another draw point. An autonomous LHD must sense vehicle position along the route, relate sensor data to stored-map information, to determine location, follow drift center lines, plan paths between dump position and initiate appropriate control commands, sense vehicle operating status and vehicle health, key on features or targets for special tasks like high speed turns, perform end of travel tasks (loading and dumping), and detect and avoid obstacles. These goals are similar to those for shuttle cars, trucks, and front-end loaders. Therefore, much of the technology is transferable. Each Henderson LHD extracts six to 40 dippers from each of a series of draw points. The LHD transports the ore to an ore pass within 55 m (180 ft) of the draw point, making the longest round trip 110 m (360 ft). The LHDs have very fast hydraulic dumping and loading systems that reduce the round trip cycle to less than one minute. Even though the LHD is capable of 500 trips per shift, the average production is 300 dippers. Man trip and lunch reduce available operating time to 6.5 hours per shift. Mucking difficulties (setting large boulders aside), operator breaks for activities like talking shop, and cleaning and smoothing roads further reduce operating time. Supervised autonomy can reduce the number of operating units by increasing operating time per shift since computer controlled machines can operate during lunch and between shifts and reduce operator errors. If dippers per shift increase from 300 to 350 (long-range goals are 500 dippers per shift), constant production requires only 10 operating LHDs and two spares. Manpower requirements drop from 24 to four by controlling five machines from one workstation. A review of technology available from the Autonomous Land Vehicle, the Advanced Ground Vehicle Technology, the Ground Surveillance Robot, and other programs, show the following differences between others work and mining industry needs: •If we focus initially on mobile haulage vehicles, we can navigate from a map. We do not need to explore. •We can modify the environment to reduce the navigation requirements. •We have a harsher environment than any of the research programs have encountered. •Our equipment must operate faster and more precisely than present AVs. •Our equipment must operate reliably over long periods of time. •We must have better onboard machine health monitoring and diagnostics. •The AV programs do not address geosensing. •The major AV programs are not cost-effective. For example, we cannot afford the computer power for robust image processing, yet. To computer control an LHD, we must replace the guidance and monitoring skills of experienced operators with sensors, computing hardware, interfaces, and several software mod¬ules. The total iron ore production in Sweden in 1969 was 33.3 million metric tons. 31.7 million tons were exported mainly to Western European countries. 27.8 million tons (87 per cent) originated from the mines at Kiruna, Svappavaara and Malmberget, located just north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden. Planned production for 1970 is 25 million tons during 10 months, due to a strike at the beginning of the year. Present production plans for the next five years expect an annual export capacity around 33 million tons in 1975, including 5.7 million tons of pellets. The mining and shipping at the loading terminals of Narvik on the Atlantic coast and Luleå at the Gulf of Bothnia are managed by LKAB - a 96 per cent state-owned company. 4 per cent of the share capital is owned by the private Grängesberg Company. The railway - 106 miles from Kiruna to Narvik and 130 miles from Malmberget to Luleå - is operated by the State Railways in Sweden and Norway. Comprehensive expansion of the Narvik ore port will be carried through during the next five years to increase the annual shipping capacity to at least 35 million tons and meet the development of rapidly growing ship sizes.

Ideally, mill circuits should be controlled so that excessive random disturbances are reduced in frequency and amplitude. It is difficult to derive an objective measure of the effectiveness of any chosen control strategy. Often, the response of the circuit to pulse or sinusoidal disturbances is used as a measure of the effectiveness of control, but this is not adequate in many circumstances because such disturbances bear little resemblance to those that occur in practice, and such an approach cannot be easily related to the profitability of the reduction process. A superior approach appears to be the application of the theory of stochastic processes. This theory permits both real process disturbances to be modelled accurately, and useful objective functions for control to be derived. A test of the usefulness of stochastic theory in mill control was made on the gold ore milling circuit shown in Figure 1. This circuit was fed with an ore which had a liberation characteristic such as that shown in Figure 2. It is simple to show that, for such a liberation characteristic, the recovery of valuable mineral will vary as the standard deviation of the particle mass-size distribution varies even though the mean particle mass-size is kept constant. Similarly it may be shown that excessive perturbations in the circulating load in a milling circuit such as that shown in Figure 1 can affect liberation. Figure 3 shows how, as the cyclone feed density increases and the sump water addition decreases at constant sump level, the cyclone operation becomes unstable and the discharge "ropes? with a consequent catastrophic coarsening in product size. By minimising the variance of the circulating load it is possible to reduce the probability of initiating instabilities of this nature.

The Grossschloppen vein-uranium deposit, Bavaria, West Germany, was examined utilizing underground workings during 1980-82 by Esso Erz GMbH, an affiliate of Exxon Minerals Company (EMC). Geologic evaluation entailed dense drilling of a portion of the deposit from workings constructed specifically for the program. Discovered in 1977, the deposit was initially explored by surface diamond drillholes which allowed definition of a 30-60 m wide vein system discontinuously mineralized along a 1000 m strike length and to at least a 450 m depth. The underground program was conceived as a cost effective procedure to answer questions on vein correlation, grade continuity and variability. A 1200 m decline allowed access for detailed sampling of approximately 10% of the known area of mineralization. Fanned drillholes, logged by gaga probe, were spaced to provide intersections of veins at 10 to 20 m intervals. Six cross cuts also penetrate the pitchblende and uranophane mineralization which occurs in 0.1 to 2.5 as thick quartz veins. Detailed cross-sections and level plans were constructed for resource estimates of the intensively studied portion of the vein system. The program resulted in the discovery of local, high grade areas and an average grade in the evaluated area nearly double that expected from surface drilling.

Some people in the mining-engineering field mistakenly believe that mine-water management primarily revolves around the treatment of mine waters that fail to meet applicable water-quality standards. While water-quality control is undoubtedly important, it represents only a fraction of what constitutes comprehensive site-wide, minewater management. A more holistic perspective recognizes that it also involves mine dewatering to maintain safe and workable conditions, securing sufficient water supply for operations, strategically handling surface water within and surrounding the openpit to prevent issues like flooding, developing robust post-closure plans to mitigate long-term environmental effects, and proactively minimizing any adverse impacts on local communities and ecosystems. This article provides a brief overview of topics that fall within the concepts of mine-water management. The focus is on openpit mines, as they are generally larger than underground mines. The management of mine water is highly dependent on local and regional climate such as tropical, desert or temperate climate. Each climatic setting has its own unique challenges, but there are also commonalities.

"Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR) is a satellite-based remote sensing technique capable of measuring centimeter-level surface displacement with high spatial resolution over large areas. Regular monitoring of subsidence due to underground mine development is one potential application of DInSAR, and in this study, the application of DInSAR for subsidence monitoring is evaluated for two mining regions in the mountain west of the United States. In general, DInSAR has potential to identify the shape and extent of subsidence; in some cases, magnitudes and rates of subsidence can be defined. Importantly, the effectiveness of DInSAR for subsidence monitoring depends on the radar band (wavelength), the subsidence rate and the time between image acquisitions, and the topographic and vegetative surface characteristics. INTRODUCTION Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR) is a satellite-based remote technique that can be used to measure small surface displacements. Under good conditions, centimeter-level displacements can be measured with subcentimeter accuracy (Buckley, 2000; Massonnet and Feigl, 1998). Additionally, DInSAR data have relatively high spatial and temporal resolutions. Pixels in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images can have a ground resolution as small as about 3 m, and images often include tens to hundreds of thousands of pixels and cover tens of kilometers. Regions are imaged regularly, and periods between images typically range from weeks to months. In DInSAR, phase measurements from two radar images acquired over the same region at different times are used to precisely measure relative distances (Rosen, 2014). Surface deformation, topography, and changes in the satellite position all contribute to differences in the length of the path that the radar wave travels in each image. SAR sensors use radar with relatively long wavelengths; L-band (24 cm wavelength), C-band (6 cm wavelength), and X-band (3 cm wavelength) radar are used most commonly. Because the wavelengths are long, small changes in the path length of the radar signal can be quantified by measuring the change in the phase of the radar signal between the images. In general, changes in the path length due to changes in the satellite position and topography are known or can be estimated, and centimeter-level changes in the path length due to deformation are measurable. This study evaluates the effectiveness of DInSAR for measuring subsidence in two mining regions in the mountain west of the United States. L-band data from the Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) and X-band data from the TerraSAR-X mission are evaluated. Imaging characteristics, including the radar band and the time between image acquisitions, are important for effective subsidence monitoring."

Tunnels are frequently specified by owners to be designed to a structural code, often a bridge code. In the USA, AASHTO have created a tunnel code, based on structural principles, the AASHTO LRFD Tunnel Design Specification. The Load Resistance Factor Design method (LRFD) described in the AASHTO title is an approximation to the probabilistic design of structures, based on the independence of load and resistance. This methodology is well known to be problematic in geotechnical design, but it is widely used. The paper considers the difficulties of this approach and describes alternative approaches that would result in more appropriate designs for tunnels.

The use of various electrochemical techniques to study mechanisms of sulfide mineral- flotation reagent interactions is briefly reviewed in this paper. Prior to such studies it is desirable to thermodynamically determine solution conditions favorable for formation of hydrophobic species deemed to be responsible for flotation. The thermodynamic equilibrium involving both the stable and metastable species can be conveniently represented by an Eh-pH diagram. Thermodynamics can also be used to predict conditions where a mineral might not float if depressants are present. Under favorable conditions of flotation there is competition between reactions leading to formation of hydrophobic species with reactions that lead to formation of hydrophilic species. Due to the sluggish nature of the reactions involving sulfide minerals, a knowledge of the kinetic behavior of the system is necessary. Electrochemical methods of investigation are wed in laboratory studies to (1) control the state of oxidation, (2) determine the type and amount of electroactive species present at the mineral surface, and (3) study kinetics of electrode processes. By combining electrochemical techniques and wetting measurements the identification of hydrophobic species that might be present at the mineral surface could be achieved. Both contact angle measurements at mineral electrodes or flotation in a cell equipped with a particulate bed electrode can be used for the wetting measurements.

Because of increased pressure from Federal & State Regulatory Agencies, most acid flows will require some sort of treatment prior to being discharged to receiving streams. In many industries, the volumes of liquors are large and their acid content varied. Pressure to minimize costs of waste treatment equipment and land usage makes development of a treatment process incorporating these desires mandatory. "Standard" methods of acid neutralization with lime have been known for years, however, the volume and characteristics of the resultant precipitated solids can create a disposal problem.
