In the Florida phosphate industry, fatty acid collectors are used to separate phosphate ore from silica during the rougher flotation stage. However, the presence of multivalent ions (in particular Ca++) in the processing water has been reported to result in the activation of silica with respect to oleate adsorption, rendering it floatable. Hence, adequate separation may not be achieved during the rougher flotation stage. In this study, the direct measurement of surface inter-action forces via atomic force microscopy was used to delineate possible mechanisms for calcium activation under phosphate flotation conditions at oleate/calcium concentrations both above and below the calcium dioleate precipitation limit.

Bacterial populations play an active role in mineral weathering in subsurface and near-surface environments e.g., supergene enrichment of Cu at Morenci, AZ. An invitro bacterial biofilm model was used to examine the interaction between Sporosarcina ureae and ionic gold(which is toxic) or amino acid-gold complexes in gold mobility. The immobilization of ionic gold was between80-90% for 1 week but as the available, cellular reactive sites became saturated immobilization decreased to 14%within 2 weeks. In the asparagine-gold system, gold immobilization occurred at a high rate (80-90%)throughout the experiment with limited toxicity towards Sporosarcina ureae.

A Method to Calculate Hydrodynamic Loads on Underground Bulkheads Bulkheads are structures built in openings in underground mines to impound water, preventing the water from entering the active mine workings. These structures not only have to be designed to withstand the static, hydraulic pressure, but also the dynamic or seismic pressure, which would be generated by an earthquake. Bulkheads can be considered underground dams. Unlike dams on the surface, bulkheads are often subjected to hydraulic heads that exceed the heights of the bulkheads. Theodor von Karman in 1933, and Westergaard earlier, developed the equation by which the hydrodynamic pressures on surface dams could be calculated. Civil engineering handbooks of today contain this equation. In this paper, using the methodology developed by von Karman and Westergaard, the authors have developed an equation by which the hydrodynamic forces on bulkheads could be calculated when the hydraulic head exceeds the height of the bulkhead.

BRS, Inc. has utilized Carlson's Natural RegradeTM software to design the reclamation and stabilization of abandoned open pit uranium mine spoils, AML Project 16N, located in the Gas Hills Uranium District in central Wyoming. This work was completed for the State of Wyoming's Abandoned Mine Land Program (AML) on preSMCRA (Surface Mining Reclamation and Control Act) sites for which no reclamation obligation existed. The project successfully stabilized an eroding spoil dump, enhanced the local view shed, created habitat diversity and provided a significant source of fill material for open pit highwall hazard mitigation efforts. Additionally, the project served to evaluate innovative reclamation design methods, engineering software and grade control technology. This project was nominated for a National Association of Abandoned Mine Land Programs award by the State of Wyoming. The results of this project will be presented as a case history of the Natural RegradeTM approach to surface mine reclamation. Based on the successful application of this new mine reclamation technology on the AML 16N Project, reclamation designs for spoils associated with planned underground uranium mine operations at the Velvet Mine in the Lisbon Valley Uranium District of Utah for Uranium One USA, Inc have been prepared and will be presented. Critical elements will be the encapsulation of unsuitable materials, long term hydrologic stability, and sequencing and staging of ore and mine waste for final reclamation surface construction. The goal of the Uranium One Velvet Project will be to apply best available technology to reclamation planning and fully integrate the reclamation design with the mine planning. Benefits of the approach should include improved public and regulatory perception of the project, facilitate mine permit approvals and the eventual timely release of reclamation bonds, as it is anticipated the stable landform created through this process will result in more rapid stabilization of the site to pre-mine geomorphic conditions. NATURAL REGRADETM CASE STUDY AML Project 16N, D-9 and K Pit Reclamation Project, is located in an intensely disturbed area of the West Gas Hills Uranium Mining District in Fremont County, Wyoming. The overall design calls for the placement of approximately 7 million cubic yards of backfill materials in the D9 and K Pits, imported from adjacent mine spoils including the Central Spoils, and from local highwall excavation. Figure 1 shows the location of the Central Spoils excavation area, as well as the D9 and K Pits fill area. The entire project is located on public lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management, Lander, Wyoming District Office. No access controls are in place at the abandoned mine sites. The public lands are administered under a multiple use land policy including grazing of range land, public recreation, active mining and exploration, and oil and gas. The project site is located along Fremont County Road No. 5, which is a moderately well traveled road. Reclamation of the numerous and large abandoned open pits in the Gas Hills Uranium District has reduced the risk of death or injury to the public. Site History and Background The Gas Hills Uranium District was mined by multiple companies during the period from 1955 to 1981. The uranium was hosted in the Wind River formation, a sequence of soft sedimentary layers of interbedded sandstone, clayey shales, and conglomerates. Uranium was precipitated out of ground water in classic roll front deposits, which are found from very near surface to depths greater than 400 feet. Prior to the enactment of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMCRA), very little reclamation work was performed when mines were abandoned or closed. The State of Wyoming Abandoned Mine Lands Program has worked to mitigate hazards associated with large open pits, control migration of unsuitable materials and restore watershed functionality of lands in the district. Additional reclamation is being performed by mining companies on bonded lands. Figure 2, Gas Hills Uranium District aerial photograph, shows the extent of the mining disturbance in the district. [ ] Project Hazards and Concerns The purpose of AML Project 16N is to mitigate hazardous conditions and risk to the public associated with open pit highwalls and toxic, acid forming, and /or radioactive mine waste materials. The D9 and K Pits are contiguous open pits characterized by an 8,800 foot long hazardous highwall that averages over 200 feet tall. Who We Are Farmland Hydro (FHLP) is a Limited Partnership formed by Farmland Industries, the largest U.S. farmers’ cooperative, located in Kansas City, MO, and Norsk Hydro, a large Norwegian company engaged in fertilizer, petroleum and the specialty metals industry. Both of our parent companies have a long history of commitment to the fertilizer industry. This year, Farmland Industry celebrates its 71st year in the business, and Norsk Hydro celebrates its 100th operating year! We employ approximately 300 associates in Central Florida. What We Do Farmland has been active in Hardee County, FL since the 1970’s as a large landowner and citrus grower. We plan to expand this activity into phosphate rock mining. The phosphate rock produced here will be shipped to our nearby chemical fertilizer complex in Polk County, where we produce quality phosphate products - liquid and granular fertilizers. Of the phosphate rock mined, 90% is used to make fertilizer. Other uses include animal feed, vitamins, medicine, light bulbs, soft drinks, film, flame resistant fabric, optical glass, toothpaste, bone china and other consumer products.

The Geomechanics Classification (Bieniawski, 1979) was modified for entry and roof support design in underground room-and-pillar coal mines. Adjustment multipliers were introduced to incorporate the influence of strata weatherability, high horizontal stresses, and the roof support reinforcement factor into the existing classification system. Sixty-two case histories of both standing and fallen mine roof were collected from two mines in the northern Appalachian coalfield. Twenty-seven engineering and geologic parameters were recorded for each case. A partial correlation analysis was carried out on the cases to establish which parameters have a significant impact upon the supported stand-up time of coal mine roof. Survival analysis, a statistical technique used in medical research to assess the effect of a drug or treatment on a patient's life expectancy, was conducted together with stepwise multiple regression to derive values for the adjustment multipliers. A practical example is included to illustrate the application of the modified Geomechanics Classification to underground coal mine design.

The tide has turned. Developments in China that have continued to unfold over the last four years or so have now reached a point where the supply market dynamics of certain industrial minerals have changed significantly. No more is this sea change better exemplified than by the supply market for magnesite, and in particular, its processed derivative grades of dead burned magnesia (DBM), caustic calcined magnesia (CCM), and fused magnesia (FM). But what has compounded the barrage of influencing factors impacting this sector, which include the widespread effects of energy and freight cost increases, has been rising demand from certain end use markets. Clearly, the magnesia market is experiencing bittersweet conditions. But those western producers which have monitored and responded to this market transformation, stand to taste success in the near and medium future. REVOLUTION IN WORLD SUPPLY STATUS In essence, while China, as host to a wealth of magnesite resources in Liaoning province, remains a huge producer of magnesia, its supply dominance on the global magnesia market has been considerably weakened. In future, it will mainly aim to supply domestic, and to some extent east Asian markets. Magnesia consumers outside China are now scrabbling for alternative, ?western? sources of supply. At the same time, magnesia producers outside China that weathered the storm of low cost Chinese DBM and FM imports flooding their regional markets for the last 20 years (and many did not), are busy investing in production capacity increases to meet not just demand from falling Chinese supply, but also demand from end use markets which is picking up. And it is not just a matter of expanding capacity of existing magnesia product lines. In the face of plentiful lower cost DBM and FM substitutes from China over the last couple of decades, many western magnesia producers started to switch their focus to the non-refractory markets (eg. environmental, specialities) which promised lucrative opportunities (and still do) and crucially, a lessening of sales revenue dependence on the DBM refractories market. Now we have the likes of Baymag (Canada), Bommag (Serbia/Turkey), and Kumas (Turkey) not only expanding capacities but seriously considering diversifying into DBM and FM production. Perhaps DSP (Israel), having ceased its famous high purity DBM activity as recently as 2005, might even reconsider a return to the ?other side?. But it?s not all DBM and FM. The CCM and specialities markets are also demanding a response, and so Baymag, DSP, Martin Marietta (USA), Premier Chemicals (USA), Qmag (Australia), MGR (Spain), and Magnifin (Austria) are also stepping up to the market on the non-refractory side. From most accounts, the situation with regard to Chinese supply has been described as one of turmoil, with prices rising, leading to improving opportunities for western producers. The majors are conducting huge expansion programmes, such as Qmag, Magnezit (Russia), and the new look Magnesita (Brazil). Even smaller players such as Causmag (Australia) and Dalmia (India) are looking to increase production. In short, the western magnesia supply sector is witnessing a landmark event in capacity investment and market share penetration as China?s previously dominant role begins to weaken (for a review of western capacity expansions see Industrial Minerals, September 2008, p.28). MERGER & ACQUISITION ACTIVITY Another response of course has been a raft of mergers and acquisitions in order to secure resources and supply outside China. These have included private equity groups taking over Magnesita and Qmag; Imerys entering the FM business through UCM; Peñoles further consolidating the electrical grade FM market by acquiring Minco; Martin Marietta acquiring Morton Salt?s Specialty Magnesia Group; Bomex entering the market through Calmag (now Bommag); LWB acquiring Magnesita; and Magnezit?s pursuit of Slovakian magnesia, with Slovmag aboard while currently wooing SMZ. Interestingly, RHI has gone ?the other way?, and has invested in a state of the art joint venture operation at Dashiqiao, Liaoning, with which it aims to secure high quality feedstock for its Chinese refractory plants. Tata Refractories Ltd has announced intentions to follow suit, and other majors, such as Qmag are known to be interested in seeking options. Naturally, there is now renewed interest from several parties in the idled 50,000 tpa DBM/10,000 CCM Jormag facility, Jordan, and the commercially undeveloped Zhargat project, Saudi Arabia. Elsewhere, there will no doubt be suitors for stakes in SMZ, in Slovakia, and Magnohrom, in Serbia, whose respective ownerships are on the block. THE ?CHINA FACTOR? The ?China factor? has been key to magnesia?s market change, and has significantly influenced prices and availability of material to global markets. Resources & production China hosts the largest share of the world?s magnesite deposits, accounting for 26% or 3,319m. tonnes of predominantly sparry magnesite (followed by North Korea, 24%, and Russia, 22%; Wilson 2008). China accounts for 44% of total world magnesite mined (19m. tonnes in 2007) and 50% of the total world magnesia produced (8.2m. tonnes CCM, DBM, FM; Wilson 2008). Russia follows China at 13% of magnesia supply, illustrating China?s dominance of magnesia production. Apart from one producer in Shandong province, central eastern China, the country?s magnesite resources and production are concentrated around the cities of Haicheng and Dashiqiao in Liaoning province, north-east China. Although there are also producers in the Xiuyan district of south-east Liaoning, the Haicheng-Dashiqiao Magnesite Belt hosts the majority of producers. In total these may number 200-300 of large,

I would like to congratulate Professor Gershon on an idea that is obviously valuable and is certainly new to me. It has, however, to be further developed, in that one can get fallacious results by limiting oneself to positional weights. In the example problem, the positional weight of one block was 8.6 (the 8.0 value in the paper was incorrect) for 36 units in the cone, for a mean block value of 0.239. The positional weight of the second block was 4.4 for 15 units, for a mean block value of 0.293. Surely one would expect the second block to be rated higher. Additionally, the time value of money adjustment cannot be determined by depth, because the time that a block is mined is determined by the mining sequence, not depth. Figure 1 shows a slightly altered version of Professor Gershon's pit. The overall value of the pit is the same, as are the total values under each of his blocks. The values in the right-hand cone have been reversed top to bottom, and the values in the rest of the pit adjusted to keep the central cone total unchanged. All values have been multiplied by 10. Figure 2 shows the sequence of mining, at three blocks per year, for Professor Gershon's pit, and Fig. 3, the sequence for a pit under the other block. Table 1 shows the value and discounted value (15%) of Professor Gershon's pit, and Table 2 shows similar values for the second pit. It is apparent that the second pit schedule is more valuable than the first.

A pilot-plant flotation concentrate containing 21.6 g/t gold and 2 kg/t silver was used for this study. Base-line cyanide and thiourea tests showed 30-40% extraction of both gold and silver. After roasting (450-750C), the maximum gold extracted was 89% with thiourea and 76% with cyanide. Pressure oxidation tests were conducted following a statistical experimental design in a 2L laboratory autoclave at 10% pulp density, and the residues were subsequently leached in acidic thiourea solutions for 2h. Leach results were presented in the form of contour maps, and optimum autoclave conditions were determined for maximum gold extraction (93%). However, silver extraction was only 7% when gold extraction was maximized.

Conventional methods of drill hole site selection are reviewed briefly. Two approaches using geostatistics are then discussed, both of which have been shown to yield improved results. Finally, a branch and bound algorithm is described which will select the best locations for drilling from a user specified number of possible drill sites. Two options are discussed. First, the user can specify a maximum drilling investment or a maximum number of drill holes and the program will select the locations yielding the minimum estimation variance. This amounts to getting the most for a given investment. Alternatively, a maximum tolerable estimation variance can be specified and the program will select the number and location of the drill holes to obtain the desired information at a minimum cost. Another benefit of the approach is the quantification of the tradeoffs between investment and information obtained.

Introduction During the last decade, the metallic minerals segment of the industry could be categorized as a "feast-or-famine" business. It is no secret that metallic minerals are cyclical. Employment opportunities greatly depend on the supply and demand for its mineral products. It is also not unusual for there to be a lag between the industry's manpower requirements and academia's ability to produce new graduates. Due to this lag, there will be years with manpower shortages, as in the mid-1970s. At other times, supply will exceed demand. The question is where will the jobs be in the years to come? This presentation will review reasons why employment opportunities have declined within the metallic minerals industry. It will also predict future demand for mineral engineering graduates. And it will outline strategies for obtaining an employment offer. Historical Review - Employment From 1977 through 1983, about 75% of all metal mining employees were directly engaged in production activities, down from 83% in 1965. This decline reflects increased use of labor saving equipment, and more government regulation and foreign competition. Metal mining's employment decreased from 74,000 jobs in 1982 to fewer than 68,000 in 1983 - an 8% decline. The overall industry is having these problems because of the general downturn in the economy. For example, at the beginning of this decade, US automobile and steel industries were in trouble. Interest rates were too high and volatile. This adversely affected construction, housing starts, and manufacturing. All these industries, being large users of base metals, drastically affected the metals industry. US copper companies are still having problems. Reports indicate that many copper employers have cut production, laid-off workers, and permanently closed mines, refineries, and smelters. A decline in the demand for US produced metal products, such as copper, obviously affects some mineral engineering employment opportunities. Other factors to consider when looking at employment opportunities and why it has become difficult for US metal producers to compete in the world market include: • The grades of ore bodies of many US minerals are considerably lower than the grades of ores being mined elsewhere in the world. • The grades of ore bodies currently being mined in the US are steadily declining. • Foreign producers are largely government controlled and are not necessarily subject to the realities of supply and demand. • US environmental regulations have considerably added to production costs. Foreign producers in most countries do not have to worry about these additional costs. • US mines are getting deeper. This adds to the cost of production because of the increasing distance the ore has to be transported. • Plants and equipment are outdated. Many companies find themselves operating with equipment and plants that need modernizing or replacing. This obviously hinders competitive productivity. • Labor and management have had problems. Work stoppages in certain mining businesses and high wage and benefit costs in relation to foreign producers place US producers at a disadvantage. • Much land is unavailable. The US government owns most of the land considered to have the best potential for minerals development. Most of this land is unavailable for mining or exploration. Therefore, it appears that finding employment with a company whose primary business is mining and processing most metals, such as copper, in the US will be quite restricted and competitive. Future Demand It is difficult to anticipate what key employment opportunities within the next few years will be available to mineral engineering graduates. The Engineering Manpower Commission estimated that US engineering schools awarded 72,471 undergraduate degrees in 1983 vs. 66,990 in 1982. This was the eighth consecutive year in which the number of baccalaureates awarded has increased. On a brighter note, the US government's Occupational Outlook Quarterly stated that the growth rate through 1995 for all engineers is an encouraging 49% over present levels. Historically, this area produced gold and silver from many well-known vein deposits, like Tayoltita, Topia, and San Jose de Gracia. Modern exploration identified three categories of deposits: 1) low grade porphyry golds in shallow level dacite porphyries; 2) batholith-related deposits; and 3) those formed in volcanic sequences of Late Cretaceous to Late Tertiary. At least four porphyry golds have been identified, of which Metates is best known. These are formed by and within daciteporphyries, associated hydrothermal breccias and sometimes within surrounding meta sediments. Their ages are from mid-Cretaceous to Early Tertiary. Precious metal deposits associated with batholiths occur as veins, contact haloes in meta sediments or volcanics, skarns, tectonic breccias, hydrothermal tourmaline breccias, dacite dikes or as disseminated or stockwork deposits such as La Fortuna.Several new gold discoveries were made in older EarlyTertiary Volcanic Sequences and in the younger Tertiary volcanics within prominent structures exceeding 3 to 5 km in lengths. Some of these are open-pittable but most have to be mined by underground methods.

The aim of this study is to synthesize hydrated compounds of calcium silicate (tobermorite) using as siliceous source perlite milling process wastes, containing more than 70% of SiO2. Calcium silicate hydrates are mainly used for construction of lightweight building materials, plasters, tiles and filters. The effect of temperature, time and particle size of perlite on the quality and composition of the solid product was studied. The solid products were characterized by X-ray Diffractometry, Differential Thermal Analysis and the amount of Acid Insoluble Residue. The synthesis of tobermorite was per-formed by the hydrothermal treatment of perlite waste with a saturated calcium hydroxide solution at a molar ratio CaO/SiO2 of 1, liquid to solid ratio 10 mL/g and 1% w.t. NaOH addition. Three experimental sets were performed. In the first series of experiments the synthesis temperature was kept constant at 205°C while the synthesis time varied from 0.5 h to 24 h. In the second experimental series the synthesis time was kept constant at 2 h while the temperature varied between 150°C and 245°C. In the third experimental set the temperature was 205°C and the reaction time was 2 hours and two perlite waste size fractions were used, a coarse (d50=18 µm) and a fine grained one (d50=8 µm). Reaction products consisted of semicrystalline calcium silicate hydrate (I) and crystalline Al-substituted tobermorite or a mixture of both. An isomorphic Si4+ ions substitution with Al3+ ions in the hydrated calcium silicate lattice was detected by thermal analysis. The experimental results show that good quality crystalline Al-tobermorite can be produced after 6 hours of autoclaving at 205°C or after 2 hours of hydro-thermal treatment at 225°C. Generally, the in-crease of synthesis temperature or time favors the crystallization of calcium silicate phases and enriches them in aluminum. The use of fine grain size perlite is more efficient for the hydrothermal synthesis of calcium silicate hydrates.

Introduction The mining of aggregates underground has grown steadily over the last 25 years. Growth has come in both production volume and in the importance this segment of the industry is playing in the continuing supply of construction aggregate. Underground aggregate mines will continue to grow in both number of operations and complexity, as the replacement of zoned reserves in metropolitan areas becomes crucial. This growth will result in a shortage of qualified mine managers, possibly limiting the success of these facilities. The aggregate industry will have to modify current practices in order to meet the growing demand for this specialized skill. Segment Growth Underground mining for aggregates is not a new idea. Martin Marietta has been operating underground mines since 1969, and currently operates 16 underground mines ranging in size from 250,000 tpy to 2,500,000 tpy. These mines represent less than 4% of the total number of operating locations, but contributed 9% of the annual production in 2004. Though they range in size and production capacity, the importance is evident. The 2000 United States Census revealed several trends that are of interest to the aggregate mining industry. For the period 1990-2000 the U.S. population grew by 33 million or 13%. There were nine major metropolitan areas with a population of five million or more. These nine areas accounted for 30% of the total U.S. population. More significant was the fact that the population growth in these nine metro areas was 25% of the growth for the entire country. These statistics tell us that the population is expanding in these major metropolitan areas at a staggering rate. The same thing is happening to some degree in every population center. Population growth increases the demand for local aggregate while reducing the available area to mine that aggregate. The need for an economical supply of aggregate to support community expansion is a problem that will grow as older quarries are mined out and closed. This will be an issue that communities of all sizes will have to deal with. A reliable and cost effective supply of quality aggregate is crucial to support community expansion.

An appropriate scale-up methodology is very useful for ball mill design and optimization of the grinding circuit. To date, the scale-up is based on the selection and breakage function model using lab mill data. However, a major drawback of that approach is that the charge motion in a lab mill is vastly different from that in a large industrial mill. Therefore, in the methodology proposed here, first the energy of individual collision in the mill is computed employing the discrete element method (DEM). Then the breakage of particles as a function of collision energy is studied in a separate experiment. Together, this information constitutes what is known as collision energy based population balance model. The appropriateness of this model is shown for different batch grinding mills.

Composite materials are finding new applications daily, ranging from automotive parts to synthetic lumber. The variety of applications seems almost limitless. However, these emerging products bring both new opportunities and new challenges to the field of industrial minerals. One of the primary challenges is from alternative materials other than industrial minerals. Thus the question is asked whether industrial minerals will truly benefit from the growth in market applications for composite plastics. This article highlights some of the opportunities for industrial minerals while focusing on performance and competitive demands on mineral products intended for use in this developing market.
