Introduction Metals exploration activity is moderately intense in the US despite the 1981-82 recession in the mining industry. Although exploration expenditures are significantly less than the 1981 peak, quality and goal orientation of current exploration are high. Major foreign and domestic mining companies as well as nonmetal companies had been attracted to invest in minerals in the US. Its capital markets, political stability, and open-door policy are attractive for hard mineral explo¬ration, particularly in the West. The approach was to either acquire fully or partially developed ore bodies through merger and acquisition, or to fund large scale exploration programs in search of bulk-tonnage deposits. The acquisition avenue has not proved the panacea envisioned for overcoming lack of substantive mineral development. Nor has the decentralized approach to exploration that was adopted proven cost-effective. The emphasis on gold, to the exclusion of all other commodities, raises questions regarding the direction of exploration in the US for the rest of the 1980s. Overview More than 300 companies are active in metals exploration in the US. These range from established, well-known domestic and foreign corporations to hurriedly incorporated, unknown companies financed by having promoted mineral prospects or occurrences of questionable quality. Junior companies tend to be oriented toward property entrepreneurship, rather than the development of minerals resources. These companies have helped maintain mineral lands from prospect to production by holding blocks of property intact during periods of exploration inactivity. This was done through promotional efforts, even though few properties that attracted major venturers proved to have real merit. Exploration objectives of senior and junior exploration companies currently embrace only a few commodities. Arranged in approximate descending order of priority, these are: precious metals; base metals in monometallic or polymetallic deposits; strategic metals, such as tungsten, tantalum, and tin; unconventional commodities, such as diamonds; ferrous metals; and commodities such as beryl, zeolites, and barite. Prospectors are important in searching for these targets. In the US, where they have been financed by major and junior companies, prospectors have proven a useful and low-cost means of locating gold prospects (e.g. the Alligator Ridge property in Nevada). The tenacity and persistence of independent prospectors have been factors in discovering properties rejected or overlooked by professional geologists (e.g. Lornex mine in British Columbia). This has been realized by the provincial government that grubstakes bona fide prospectors. Exploration interest in commodities has always been cyclic with price. Gold is one of the few metals that has experienced a price increase of such magnitude to warrant attention. The potential for realizing adequate operating margins for the Nevada open-pit "no-see-um" gold deposits is great. The present declining gold price, however, may indicate that this emphasis on gold, to the exclusion of other commodities, is shortsighted. Mining companies have been the last to react to price increases, opening new mines based on unrealistic market expectations. A scenario could develop where plummeting gold prices bring recession to the gold industry, as lately occurred in uranium, molybdenum, and copper. Introduction The use of diesel engines as an alternate power source in US underground coal mines has been a controversial step towards more efficent mining practices. Three areas of potential benefit are foreseen. First, diesel-powered mining equipment is believed to be more efficient, resulting in less occupational risk for any given amount of production. Second, diesels are believed to pose fewer intrinsic hazards, especially those related to fires and ignition of combustibles. Finally, several other health and safety advantages are foreseen for diesel units. Each of these issues will be discussed separately. Diesel Efficiency Proponents of the use of underground diesel-powered mining equipment point to increased production efficiency due to greater maneuverability, speed, power, and payload (Bradbury, 1973; Jorgensen, 1982; Ogden, 1978; Wenberg, 1979; Olsen, 1980). Units most suitable for diesel power include LHD vehicles, shuttle cars, personnel carriers, and maintenance vehicles. Estimates of increased efficiency vary from 60%-300% and more (Wenberg, 1979). Increased diesel mining efficiency is usually viewed as making it practical to mine lower grade seams. Diesel units can also operate over a wider range of floor pitches and distances than electrically-powered units, thus allowing mining of seams with special mining problems (Olsen, 1980). Diesel application is not a universal substitute for electrical power. For example, continuous miners are unlikely diesel candidates. Reduced Intrinsic Hazards Proponents of diesel use have pointed to the increased safety potential due to a reduction in electrocutions, arcs, burns, underground cable fires, and methane ignition (Ogden, 1978). Diesel units are frequently employed in maintenance activities for lifting and moving, and for coal cleanup. Thus the case is made that diesel use, by making powered operations more conveniently available, reduces the incidence of lower back injuries and related causes for days lost due to disability (Olsen, 1980). Several other issues relating to diesel safety have also been suggested. Diesel units can continue operation even during power outages allowing, for example, personnel evacuation. The maneuverability of diesel units make them particularly attractive in difficult physical conditions, such as long haulage from the face to the belt and in areas where water is deep. The case for diesel use focuses heavily on the potential for a "per worker" reduction in accidents, or a reduction in the severity of accidents. Since accidents are a major part of the health impact of mining, a reduction in accidents and resulting injuries would make a major contribution to the health of coal miners. Opposition to Diesel Use Opposition to the use of underground diesel mining equipment in the US seems to have started with the United Mine Workers of America. Some opposition to US diesel use has been based on a widely publicized 1976 letter from NIOSH to Mine Enforcement and Safety Administration administrator Robert Barrett (NIOSH, 1982). In essence, this letter warned that while insufficient evidence existed as to diesel effects on underground coal miners, NIOSH had concerns based on prior knowledge of separate diesel exhaust constituents and the potential for interaction between these constituents and coal mine dust. Current opposition to underground diesel use has focused on respiratory health effects related to diesel emissions, particularly nitrogen dioxide (NO,), carbon monoxide (CO), and particulate content (Barrett, 1982). INTRODUCTION A population of several thousand uranium miners in the Colorado Plateau region of the United States has been under surveillance since 1957 using sputum cytology and other procedures. Attempts were made to collect sputum samples annually for those miners showing normal sputum or only minor abnormalities, and on a semi-annual schedule for miners having more severe cytological abnormalities. For individuals having carcinoma in situ or malignant cells in their sputum, samples were taken more frequently. As in any human population, however, these schedules were not always adhered to, and samples were often acquired less often than scheduled. On the basis of the thousands of sputum readings that have resulted from this surveillance, one can calculate the durations or sojourn times which individuals spend in the various cytologic states into which the sputum readings are classified. This paper presents some preliminary, descriptive results concerning relationships among the cytologic state duration distributions in this population, and their associations with other variables such as radiation exposure and cigarette smoking. There are several reasons for studying cytology results in this observational setting. Of considerable interest is the opportunity to gain insight into the preclinical natural history of lung cancer. Such information would be valuable in the future design and interpretation of screening programs for the early detection and treatment of lung cancer, should this activity prove to be of benefit in experimental trials. Secondly, it is of interest to determine if some characteristic of sputum cytology readings can be utilized to determine a decision point at which to transfer a uranium miner to another job category within the industry in order to effectively reduce his probability of developing lung cancer. For example, a reading of moderately atypical cells in the sputum has been suggested as a possible decision event which would be sufficient to warrant such a transfer. In the analysis which follows, an attempt will be made to develop information relevant to these issues. The data base for our analysis, largely developed over a period of more than 20 years by Drs. Geno Saccomanno and Victor Archer, contains sputum readings classified into one of eight cytologic states: normal, metaplasia, mild atypia, moderate atypia, marked atypia, suggestive, suggestive-equivocal, and malignant. The two suggestive states will not be considered as these categories seldom contain enough observations to generate meaningful results. The duration in a given cytologic state for a given individual is calculated as the sum of the intervals between consecutive sputum readings in that state. When two consecutive readings are in two different states, half the between-readings interval is assigned to each of the two states. Among all individuals in the data base, only those having at least two sputum readings are used so that a duration can be calculated. Furthermore, the analysis is limited to individuals whose successive readings are no more than 24 months apart, so as to focus on a population which was under surveillance on a reasonably regular basis. RESULTS The overall distributions for the cytologic states are displayed as histograms in Figures 1-3.

In the post-World War II years, metals analysts and statisticians have tracked the demand for metals in line with changes in Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) industrial production (IP) growth rates, Williamson said. This was because the correlation between IP growth and metal demand was reasonable. "However, the correlation was exaggerated," he said. During times of expanding IP growth, metal demand increased at a faster proportional rate than IP growth. This was probably due to industry restocking in anticipation of growing demand at the start of each economic cycle. Conversely, metal demand would slacken at a greater rate than would be suggested by negative IP growth as industry destocked to reduce costs. Nonetheless, he said, a reasonable correlation could be painted between IP growth over the longer term and metal demand. "Yet, although this correlation has stood well since the last world war, it has been based on the fact that the bulk of the world's IP growth stemmed from the industrialized countries of the western world, lately including Japan," Williamson said. The so-called "developing world" had been of little consequence. The Soviet Union and other communist bloc countries were deemed to be closed, self-contained entities that, for each metal, would either be net exporters or importers, he said. These quantities would be used by analysts to calculate the overall supply/demand equation for the western world only and to deduce whether a commodity was in shortage or surplus. It is now believed that this method of projecting total world supply and demand for raw materials is outdated, Williamson said. It does not take into account the worldwide political changes that have occurred since the collapse of communism and the revitalization of China. "It is no longer appropriate to assess global balances for raw materials on the basis of three economic blocs," he said, including the western world, developing world and communist bloc. Rather, global balances need to be projected on a global basis. In this regard, since the collapse of communism and the removal of many other totalitarian regimes, capitalist forces are attempting to satisfy the expectations of the great mass of the world's poorer people, Williamson said. Such people, usually located in Asia, Africa and Latin America, have aspired to the same standard of living as people living in western Europe, North America and Japan. "Now, with free market forces at work, their aspirations will start to be met." Consequently, the demand for metals and other raw materials will now rise at a much faster rate. The production of raw materials has to keep pace with rising IP in the developed world. It will also have to keep pace with the demands associated with the rising expectations of increasing populations in the developing world, as well as from within the old communist bloc countries.

In 1947, coal production in Western Canada was 10 Mt (11 million st) which predominantly came from 120 underground mines. By 1968 production was down to 1 Mt (1.1 million st). Production in 1981 was back up to 29 Mt (32 million st), but only 1.5 Mt (1.7 million st) of the total was from underground mines. In fact, because of competition from open-pit mines, only two underground mines were operating in 1981-the McIntyre and B.C. Coal mines. While several other underground mines are being planned, this article will deal with only the two in production. Geology The geology in Western Canada is frequently complicated; hence only more regular deposits are mined. Coal is generally thick, often steeply pitched and usually soft or well cleated. The 5000-km (3,100-mile) coal belt that runs from the Yukon to Mexico is well developed in Western Canada. It is divided into two distinct regions-the Rocky Mountain Lower Cretaceous coals and the mostly uniform level Upper Cretaceous coals of the plains area to the east. Isolated pockets of coal occur at Vancouver Island and Hat Creek. Hat Creek's massive 300-m (984-ft) thick geologically recent lignite deposit is 250 km (155 miles) inland. Geography The infrastructure of Western Canada is shown in Fig. 1 along with the locations of the two mines. Both rely on exports of premium low volatile metallurgical coal mostly to the Pacific Rim. The rail distance from both mines to port is 1100 km (684 miles)-accounting for a significant portion of the sales cost of the coal. Mining Methods Two main mining methods are used-room and pillar and hydraulic. Longwall has been attempted and is being considered again. In the past, a simple hand method used gravity to help mine most of the coal on steep pitches. Levels were driven in the seam, rising slightly to assist in draining. On the advance, mining would start at the upper level, usually from adits driven in the side of the mountain. Rooms or angles were driven up 100 m (328 ft) at a suitable angle for the coal to flow down. On retreating out of the level, the pillars would be taken, starting from the highest point, using batteries to stop coal or rock flushing down the room. Batteries consisted of three to six stout wooden posts set at an angle to resist material flow. Coal loading was directly from chutes at the bottom of raises into 1- to 2-t mine cars hauled by diesel or battery locomotives. Often output was restricted by the supply of empty cars. Mechanization began in the 1960s but was difficult in these conditions. Mines such as Canmore and Coleman continued operation into the 1970s but closed because steep seams, high methane emissions, and faulting made mining difficult. The emergence of activated charcoal adsorption as the most popular recovery method for precious metals, has led to numerous innovations aimed at increasing the efficiency of the process. This article describes a change in traditional charcoal transfer methods which will aid in reducing charcoal attrition losses. Studies have shown that significant charcoal attrition takes place during transfer, be it when using airlifts or centrifugal pumps. Tests conducted at Pinson Mines indicated a 4 to 8% loss to the minus 20 mesh fraction of charcoal after three (3) hours of pumping charcoal. Tests conducted while the author was at Jerritt Canyon indicated that charcoal transfer was a major contributor to charcoal losses; a decrease in the amount of coarse charcoal (plus 12 mesh) and an increase in the amount of finer charcoal (minus 16 plus 20 mesh) was noted as charcoal was moved to the head of the adsorption circuit.

How best to grind? This article compares conventional crushing and grinding circuits to semiautogenous circuits, reviews recent installations of each circuit, and describes seven methods of using autogenous or semiautogenous techniques. In addition, steel and power consumption data are reported and benefits of a dedicated digital computer are discussed. Size reduction is the most expensive operation in most mills. Crushing and grinding are usually the greatest part of capital costs. They often make up 60-70% of total mill operating costs. Picking the proper crushing and grinding method must, therefore, be done with great care, so the best circuit is chosen. In the past 10 years, there has been a strong trend toward using autogenous or semiautogenous grinding in mills throughout the world. Autogenous grinding is favored when the ore is quite competent and a fine grind is needed. Semiautogenous grinding is applied when fine crushing could cause severe problems or when ore varies in hardness or competency. The taconite iron ores of northern Minnesota fit the description for an autogenously ground ore and many are successfully ground that way. Most im¬pressive are the nine lines of 11 x 4.9 m (36 x 16 ft) mills powered by 9 MW (12,000 hp) motors at Hibbing Taconite. Porphyry copper and molybdenum ores fit the description for semiautogenous grinding. Recent installations include Highmont in British Columbia, Canada, and Quintana in New Mexico. Sampling Many mills have been built based on inadequate sampling data or insufficient tests. With the cost of many mills exceeding several hundred million dollars, it is mandatory that geologists, mining engineers, and metallurgists work together to prepare representative testing samples. Simple, repeatable work index tests are usually sufficient for rod and ball mill tests. However, pilot plant tests on 50-100 t (55-110 tons) of ore are frequently necessary for autogenous or semiautogenous mills. Preparation and selection of the test sample is of utmost importance. Procedures for autogenous and semiautogenous mill pilot plant tests are relatively simple for those experienced in running them. Reliable and repeatable results can be obtained if simple, fundamental procedures are followed. The accompanying figure shows a typical conventional crushing-grinding circuit with three stages of crushing followed by ball mills or a rod mill-ball mill combination. This flowsheet is typical of many mills that have been built throughout the world. Also shown is a typical semiautogenous (SAG) circuit with feed coming directly from a primary crusher, and the semiautogenous mill product going to the separation process. Many similar semiautogenous circuits are built today because they are simple and flexible, lend themselves readily to high tonnages, and usually cost less to build and operate. With some ores, it is possible to send mine-run ore directly to the semiautogenous mill, eliminating the need for a primary crusher, as at Benquet's Dizon mill in the Philippines. An autogenous or semiautogenous circuit, as the name implies, uses the ore itself to assist in the grinding process. Generally, for this type of circuit, the ore must be competent so large ore chunks can be used to grind smaller ones. If ore alone is used, then the circuit is autogenous; but if balls are added to supplement the charge, then the circuit is termed semiautogenous. Ore competency is not always a criterion, to break up large pieces and wash away cementing material. Autogenous and semiautogenous mills have been very successful on relatively soft uranium ores where the values are frequently found in the material that cements together the sandstone grains. Introduction Gravity-based coal/mineral preparation plants must be operated to yield products of a quality satisfactory to existing markets. However, because of historic control problems, recovery is frequently sacrificed to achieve quality, resulting in losses of valuable product. Plant control has ranged from intuitive in-plant spot quality judgments made by various operators to gross methods involving such devices as density gauges, floats, grabsample on-the-spot sink/float tests, etc. Millions of tons of quality coal/minerals are lost to refuse each year, because of the historic lack of a continuous and dependable control system. The result is serious economic, as well as environmental, losses. While the economic losses are obvious, the less obvious environmental ones, in the case of coal, result from the misplacement of more ignitable quality fuel to refuse banks. Until recently, a control system capable of supplying a market-grade coal/mineral product, while continuously minimizing product losses to refuse, has been technologically unavailable. Coal/Mineral Washing Tracer System Performance Monitor (CMWTSPM) The first Coal/Mineral Washing Tracer System Performance Monitor (CMWTSPM) originated in the late 1970s as an innovative idea and ultimately resulted in Leonard Patent No. 4,345,994 issued on August 24, 1982. In a classic example of successful university basic research, the patent was followed by two US Department of Energy (DOE) merit awards for fundamental optimization research at the University of Kentucky, a number of publications, a successful applied research program (underwritten by SENTREX at Irvine, CA) and field tests at the Rochester and Pittsburgh Coal Company Keystone Mine near Indiana, PA. The system is now operational and is marketed by SENTREX as the SENTREX Performance Monitor. A diagram of the system is shown in Fig. 1. This system relies on metal detection as the basic tracing medium. Since it is capable of tracing particles as fine as 0.19-in., the system is ideal for coarse coal/ mineral cleaning processes. Basically, the CMWTSPM records the distribution of synthetic coal/mineral particles, of known size and specific gravity, between product and refuse output streams of coal/mineral washing, gravity-concentrating processes. For any given particle size, surface area and shape are constant. The particles are [ ] designed to find their way into the center of their respective inprocess specific gravity/size streamlines. The system will yield a complete partition curve to show the percentage of misplacement for any selected size/specific-gravity particle fraction, thereby providing a point-to-point insight into process failure. When used to evaluate operational processes, this full partition curve is far more diagnostic than the simplifying, derivative, single index number known as the Ep value. The Ep value is commonly used for convenience to represent symmetrical partition curves, but, if the actual partition curve is non-symmetrical, use of the Ep value can result in serious diagnostic error. While the Ep is useful in design and for rapid performance evaluation and process adjustment, the full partition curve is by far the more diagnostic. It will provide insight into the behavior of particulate flow, through non-symmetry, as a means to highlight potential systemic failures. Performance of the process is measured and improved by determining the extent of particle misplacement and by making timely adjustments to the unit to reduce the misplacement. Used in this manner, the CMWTSPM is not only a long needed processing control monitor, but it is also a very powerful diagnostic tool which, in the hands of skilled operators, has

Airborne dust is one of the important environmental problems in mines. Besides conventional dust control methods, recently, extensive studies have been carried out on the elimination of dust before it has actually been formed. Determining to what extend rock characteristics influence the amount of dust produced during different mining activities are considered as a guide for this purpose. The factors analyzed in this study were main mechanical, physical properties and petrographical constituents, namely free and combined silica. In the study regression analysis techniques were applied to investigate the effectiveness of aforementioned factors. INTRODUCTION Nearly every aspect of mining activity contributes to the air pollution caused by dust. Therefore the harmfull effect of airborne dust has been investigated many years and limit dust concentration levels were determined for various types of mine dust. To keep the dust level below limit value different dust control techniques have been applied in mines. So far, the well known techniques regarding dust control focuses on reducing the amount of airborne dust. However, recently various studies have been carried out to avoid the dust before it has actually been formed (Bhaskar and Gong, 1991). In this respect, influence of rock characteristics on dust formation is regarded as a guide for this purpose. The present contribution describes such a study in which the drilling operation is considered as the source of the dust. In this study drilling and dust sampling process were undertaken in a model gallery that simulates an underground working. The mechanical and physical properties of the rock samples were measured in rock mechanics and ore dressing laboratories. Quartz and combined silica contents of the rock samples, on the other hand, were determined in the laboratories of geological engineenring department. Rock samples used in the research were different types of coal measure rocks, namely, sandstone, shale and conglomerate. The rock characteristics studied in this work are brittleness, toughness, rock strength, hardness and hardgrove index as inherent properties; free silica, and total silica contents of rock samples as petrographical constituents. Although there have been various studies to determine the effect of rock characteristics on the dust formation, still the type and extend of effectiveness have not been understood clearly. LITERATURE REVIEW Most of the studies investigating the effect of rock properties on dust formation concluded that they are effective. In such an investigation, it has been found that inherent rock properties influence dust formation (Das, 1973). In the another study, dustiness of the air was considered as a function of the composition, hardness and moisture content (Panov, 1967). It was also accepted that in a drilling operation more fine dust is produced if the rock to be drilled is hard (Skochinsky and Kamarov, 1969). In some other investigations dust production were considered as a function of hardgrove index (Moore and Bise, 1984) or formulated in terms of brittleness, toughness and hardness (Güyagüler, 1991). The effect of the petrographical properties of coal or rock on dust formation characteristics have also been studied (Baafi, 1979) (Panov, 1967). Because of its importance, various researches were conducted the study to find out the effect of free and combined silica content of dust on dust formation. In one of the study, the relationship between quartz in the coal seam and quartz in the airborne coal dust was investigated (Ramani et al, 1988).

"With the background of water shortages and serious water pollution, issues of water involved in energy exploration and utilization have become critical problems affecting urban water usage. In order to identify the relationships of the energy-water nexus, this paper characterizes the energy-water nexus literature using a bibliometric method and based on the Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure database platform. The results reveal that 1) Scientific outcomes in this field have increased sharply since 2003, with a slightly higher growth rate than that of general disciplines. 2) China Water Resources, Yangtze River and Express Water Resources & Hydropower Information are the dominant journals, and the main research fields include industrial economics, environmental science, and management, among other disciplines. 3) Hohai University, the Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society, the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, and the Changjiang Water Resources Commission are the main research institutions in this field. However, the proportion of publications of these institutions is not high, which suggests that there is no institution dominating this field. 4) According to the keyword analysis, the hot spots in this field include ecological environment, sustainable development, environmental protection, climate change, etc. Energy-mining related keywords have increased over time, implying that the energy-water nexus from the perspective of the energy exploitation industry can become a key issue. At the same time, the frequency of keywords related to sustainable development has been maintained at a high level, and the studies concerned with the impacts of climate change were introduced into this field relatively late. The conclusion of this study provides a foundation for a comprehensive understanding of the current situation as well as for further research in the energy-water nexus field.Introduction As an important strategic resource for national economic and social sustainable development, water has been increasingly focused on by the Chinese Government. Over the next decade, the total water demand of China will continue to grow steadily, which lead to a significant trend of increasing water consumption in the future (Zhang 2013). To reasonably exploit, utilize, conserve and protect water resources, the Water Law of the People's Republic of China was enacted by the members of the 9th National People's Congress Standing Committee in 1988 and after multiple revisions, the latest of which, in September 1, 2016, has involved water infrastructures in the national economic and social development plans of the government at all levels and regulated the rationale for water engineering construction. Thus, in the context of serious water shortages and water pollution, China’s government has taken several measures to make rational use of water resources."

"Dust pollution is very serious in coal mining process, which is a great threat to the underground staff health and equipment and facilities safety. Coal seam water injection in mining process is an effective way to reduce coal mine dust concentration at the source. However, the effectiveness of water injection is limited in high-pressure and low-porosity coal seam. To improve the moisture content of coal seam, expand the wetting range and enhance the effect of dust reduction by water injection, the injectability and influencing factors of coal water injection are analyzed by numerical simulation method, and the sealing technology under high-pressure condition is studied. Then, according to the practical conditions of Tangkou coal mine, the parameters and process system of process system are designed, the effect of high-pressure water injection in coal seam was determined by testing water injection quantity, water increment and dust concentration. It is showed that the dust-removal rate of the high dust concentration operation such as falling coal and moving frame is 63.49% and 59.72%, the maximum dust-removal rate of multi-processes is 53%, which achieve a high level of application. The research results in this paper is of important theoretical and practical value to improve the water injection effect of high-pressure and low-porosity coal seam and improve the efficiency of dust removal in coal mining process.Introduction With the increasing of the depth and mechanization of coal mining, coal dust, the impact of ground pressure, ground temperature and other natural disasters continue to upgrade the harm degree (Wang 2011, Wu et al 2012), disaster incidents occur frequently, which seriouslythreaten the safe and efficient mining and the physical and mental health of underground staff. Coal seam water injection can effectively reduce the coal dust when coal crushing, prevent the impact of mine pressure, coal and gas outburst disasters, by increasing the thermal conductivity of coal, reduce coal temperature, and prevent spontaneous combustion of coal. In addition, coal seam water can soften the hard coal, so that speed up the recovery rate, improve coal production and efficiency (Wu et al 2008, Nie et al 2007). However, the coal seam in many mining area is with high-pressure and low-porosity feature, Coal joint cracks are not developed and relatively hard, water injection is difficult in these coal seams, then the desired disaster prevention effect cannot be achieved (Jin et al 2001, Zhao et al 2000). INTRODUCTION The gathering arm loader was patented by Joseph Joy in 1916. This unique machine motion became the standard of the industry and is used on underground loaders and continuous miners throughout the world. Figs. 1 and 2 show two types of gathering arm loaders. The gathering arm loader is a crawler-mounted ma¬chine primarily used for loading coal in a conventional mining system. Other uses also have been found for this machine in noncoal mines and other industries. MECHANICAL ASSEMBLIES The front or loading end of the machine, commonly called the head, consists of a tapered structural frame, hinged at the rear to the chassis and riding the ground at the front. Two bevel-gear cases are mounted in the head. They are connected by a timing shaft, which also acts as a conveyor drive shaft on most models. An eccentric disk attached to each gear case drives the gathering arms. The rear of the arms are attached to a swivel assembly. The motion derived from this arrange¬ment gathers loose material from the ground directly in front of the machine and loads it into the conveyor. Power for this drive is provided by two electric motors mounted under the gathering head. A speed reducer attached to each motor provides a gathering arm speed of approximately 5.2 rad/s (50 rpm). A torque limiting clutch is provided on each reducer to guard the system against sudden impact loading and continual overloading of the motors. The conveyor consists of an open box section through which a universal-type chain carries the ma¬terial to the rear of the machine, where it is discharged into the haulage vehicle. The chain is driven by a sprocket located on the timing shaft between the two gathering-head bevel-gear cases. On some large loader designs, primarily for noncoal applications, the chain is driven by a separate gear motor at the discharge end of the conveyor. However, the system driven by the timing shaft is used most widely. The conveyor frame is hinged just to the rear of the gathering head. It can be raised or lowered by hydraulic cylinders to the desired discharge height. The conveyor frame also is designed to pivot 0.79 rad (45°) either side of the center, just to the rear of the chassis. This feature increases the maneuverability of the ma¬chine and makes it possible to discharge material into the haulage system when in tight quarters such as when turning a crosscut. This function also is controlled by a hydraulic cylinder. The chassis of the loader consists of two crawler frames and cross members, holding the frames in position. The frames are either welded or cast as¬semblies. Replaceable wear runners are provided on the frames to take the wear generated by the crawler chain. An adjustable take-up idler keeps the crawler chain in proper adjustment for maximum life. The drive system for the crawler chains varies with the manufacturer, but it generally is one of two basic designs. One system provides a traction motor for each side of the machine, coupled to a speed reducer. A spur and bevel-gear train transfers power to the sprocket, which drives the crawler chain. At East Union, Knox County, Maine, near the shore of Crawford Pond, an outcrop of basic rock has been known for more than a century. The occurrence has been regarded as an unusual type of peridotite-pyroxenite, containing disseminated and massive pyrrhotite with nickel, copper and cobalt in recoverable amounts. From the outcrop, the sulfide body had been mapped more or less continuously for a distance of two miles through geophysical methods of several kinds. This paper describes the methods in sufficient detail to evaluate their significance. A core drilling program has con- firmed the location of the conductor and offers a positive means of correlating the geophysical measurements with the physical properties of the ore body. The history of the exploration offers a unique opportunity to evaluate the method of multiple geophysical methods.

This paper summarizes significant findings from the ongoing NIOSH Gas Well Stability research over the past decade; in particular, the important ground control engineering considerations. Longwall-induced surface and subsurface deformations may induce gas well casing deformations and stresses, depending on a few parameters such as overburden depth, overburden geology, topographic relief, strata dip, gas well setback distance, and a gas well casing cementing alternative. Overburden depth to the mining seam is one of the most influential factors; shallow overburden depth induces large horizontal displacement and resulting casing deformation and stress, while deep overburden depth induces large longwall-induced vertical pressure. Overburden geology is another important factor affecting the longwall- induced casing deformations and stresses; the large contrast of bending stiffness at the soft-to-hard rock interfaces tends to induce large casing deformations and stresses. Large surface topographic relief and the presence of soft-to-hard rock interfaces below the stream valley bottoms may shift longwall-induced subsurface gas well casing deformations closer to the surface, thus having less impact on underground. mining operations. Strata dip magnifies longwall-induced deformations by 20% per degree of strata dip for down dip longwall excavations. The gas well setback distance is also a critical geometric parameter; the effect of longwall-induced deformation decreases exponentially as the setback distance increases. Longwall-induced casing deformation and stress will be mitigated or totally uncoupled for uncemented production casing.

Introduction The gas shortage is going to be with us for some time to come. If we can set aside political and industry rhetoric (along with subjective personal opinions), we still are confronted by two serious "facts of life": (1) for almost a decade the U.S. has been consuming natural gas at a greater rate than we have been finding new reserves; and (2) there is a finite amount of natural gas present within the earth&apos;s crust. Much of the known and easily exploitable sources of gas (the so-called "conventional" sources, such as the high permeability sand reservoirs of the Tertiary sequence along the Gulf Coast) already have been developed; their production is declining rapidly. The total producible reserves from conventional gas reservoirs amount to only 216 Tcf, less than an 11-year supply. However, several large potential resources of natural gas remain to be developed. These "unconventional sources" have low permeability and/or peculiar producing characteristics. The DOE program for development of these unconventional sources of gas is called the enhanced gas recovery (EGR) program. The primary goal of this program is to provide a data base of resource characterization and production technology that will lead to commercial development. DOE will encourage and support industry participation in developing and demonstrating technologies needed to reach this goal. Unconventional Resources Four major unconventional resources of gas have a high potential for commercial development. There are other unconventional sources (such as gas hydrates) that are too poorly defined to warrant a major development thrust at this time. The four unconventional sources of gas currently included in the EGR program are: 1. The carbonaceous shales of Devonian age in the Appalachian, Illinois, and Michigan sedimentary basins are the targets of the Eastern Gas Shales Project (EGSP). 2. The low permeability, low porosity so-called "tight" gas sandstones of the Upper Cretaceous/Lower Tertiary in the Rocky Mountain areas constitute the resource target for the Western Gas Sands Project (WGSP). 3. The free methane trapped in coal beds of both the eastern and western U. S. constitute the Methane from Coal Beds Project (MCBP). 4. The abnormally high pressured, high-temperature saltwater aquifers of the Texas-Louisiana gulf coast are targets of the Geopressured Aquifer Project (GPAP). Basic implementation strategy for these EGR projects involve (1) assessing and characterizing the resource potential of the resource; (2) conducting cost-shared field testing with industry to improve, develop, and demonstrate various stimulation and production technologies; (3) coordinating EGR activities within DOE and with other federal agencies (such as the Bureau of Mines) to minimize duplication; and (4) aiming all projects toward commercial development of the gas resources. EGSP What type of "geological animal" is the EGSP dealing with? While gas undeniably is related to the occurrence of natural fracture systems within the shale, the overall producing mechanism and precise location of fractured, gas-bearing locales within each basin is still poorly understood. By developing reliable resource characterization techniques and applying effective stimulation technologies we intend to elevate the Devonian shale from the status of a potential gas resource to that of a proven gas reserve. Once we have done this the private sector can take over the large-scale commercial development of the Devonian shale gas resource. WGSP The second largest project (both in terms of complexity and level of funding) is the WGSP. The primary targets for this project are the low permeability (< 1 md) gas sandstones of the Piceance, Uintah, and Greater Green River basins and the Northern Great Plains Province. Project success in these four primary geologic locales will permit investigating additional low permeability sandstones in 16 other sedimentary basins. It appears that the only practical means of increasing permeability and resultant flow rates from these sandstones lies in the use of massive hydraulic fracturing techniques. Unfortunately, it is still too early to design such jobs with predictable results. MCBP The MCBP is to be involved in producing and utilizing methane derived from coal beds. Comments Summary It is very interesting to review the technical changes which have occurred in the industrial practice of minerals flotation over the past two decades. In 1972, worldwide industrial flotation was dominated by &apos;mechanical&apos; flotation machines having an individual cell volume less than 500 cu.ft. Manufactures, such as DENVER Eqpt. Co., OUTOKUMPU, WEMCO, GALIGHER (AGITAIR), AKKER, and later DORR-OLIVER, produced flotation machines featuring a mechanical rotating impeller which served to mix pulp and air, prior to flotation, and to keep the solid ore particles in suspension. While sharing this common mechanical impeller feature, the machine design of the various manufactures differed in detail; particularly in regard to the vertical location of the impeller in the cell and the means by which flotation air was brought into contact with the pulp within the rotor mechanism. A review of the existing technical literature in 1972 would identify academic research studies, particularly at Columbia University (N. Arbiter, C, Harris ...) aimed at comparing flotation cell design concepts, of the various machine manufactures, on a hydrodynamic basis. These research studies were confined to very small, laboratory bench size, flotation machines, and the benefits of incorporating hydrodynamic considerations in the scale-up of the existing 300 cu.ft. mechanical flotation technology to larger cells was not commonly practiced industrially. Technological advances in minerals flotation, over the past two decades, have been influenced by a variety of economic factors including the increasing development of lower grade ore bodies, the attractions of producing a higher grade final concentrate, and the economy of tails retreatment to improve overall plant recovery performance, and flotation system “optimization" became increasingly important through the 1970-80 time period. The trend toward processing lower grade ores led to higher tonnage mill operations, and stimulated the development of the very large capacity mechanical flotation machine for roughing and scavenging duty. In 1972, the 500 cu.ft. size flotation machine was being pilot tested and introduced to the industrial market. Today, 1993, individual cell volumes of 1500-3000 cu.ft. are operating successfully throughout the world, and well planned plant test programs have concluded that the very large flotation machine can achieve the same metallurgical performance level of its smaller predecessor. The large flotation machine development record clearly credits the incorporation of internal cell hydrodynamic considerations in guiding the scale-up of the mechanical flotation machine to large sizes. This guidance eliminated, or reduced significantly, costly in-plant prototype machine changes which increase Dramatically with increasing flotation machine size. Early in the 1980&apos;s, at approximately the time that flotation machines in the 1500 cu.ft. class were being introduced into the market, it became evident that the availability of the very large mechanical flotation machine brought with it the need for a systematic means to "optimize" the flotation system by relating flotation cell size, row length (i.e. number of cells per row), and flotation rougher, scavenger, and cleaner system configuration to the economic objectives of the concentrators&apos; operating management. Flotation system optimization consists of quantifying the flotation process performance using a suitable model which relates the kinetic response of the trace specie and the gangue material to the cell overflow, and produces a numerical relationship between product grade and value recovery. The computer analysis technique has proven to be an invaluable tool in determining the kinetic model coefficients which characterize a given application, and is also used to apply the resulting model to a proposed minerals beneficiation situation seeking to "optimize" the flotation system by relating metallurgical grade-recovery performance, flotation cell size, and circuit arrangement, to plant space, installation, and operating costs. It is interesting to note that these same computer based kinetic flotation analysis techniques can be easily applied to quantitatively evaluate the effect of different chemical reagent strategies, and flotation air transfer, on process performance for a variety of candidate feed ore types.

Introduction Preparing a report on fluorspar economics in the US could have been somewhat complicated at one time. This was because the number of producers, both large and small, derived production from different locations through-out the western US and the southern Illinois and western Kentucky fluorspar districts. Companies, such as Allied Chemical and Williamson Mining, operated in the Jamestown district of Colorado. In Walden and Salida, CO, the Colorado Fluorspar Co. operated mines and mills. In New Mexico, both Du Pont and Allied had mines and mills. In the Illinois-Kentucky district, US Steel, Rosiclare Lead and Fluorspar, Minerva Oil Co., and Marathon Oil all produced spar for the US market. Now all of the companies are out of the fluorspar business and, with the closing of the Seaforth Mineral Co.&apos;s Inverness Mining Co., only Ozark-Mahoning Co. survives as a domestic producer. History Ozark-Mahoning Co., as it now exists, was formed in 1946 by the merger of Ozark Chemical Co. and Mahoning Mining Co. Ozark Chemical Co. was started in the 1920s to produce sulfuric acid for two refineries located in Tulsa, OK. Mahoning Mining was originally formed by the founders of Ozark Chemical Co. and the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co. to produce fluorspar and associated minerals from properties in the southern Illinois and western Kentucky fluorspar district. In 1937, Mahoning Mining started an exploration program, employing contractor-operated churn drills to look for reserves in Hardin and Pope Counties in southern Illinois. Based on known reserves in the area and the results of the exploration program, work was started in the fall of 1938 to build a selective flotation plant at Rosiclare, IL. The mill was completed and put into operation in August of 1939. The company&apos;s first mining efforts were in the Cave-In-Rock district just north of Cave-In-Rock, IL. The deposits in this area were of the Manto or bedded type. They have been the mainstay of the company&apos;s operations in the Illinois-Kentucky fluorspar district. In 1950-51, the company expanded its operations by purchasing fluorspar properties from Colorado Fluorspar Co. at Walden, CO. This location was operated from 1952 through 1958 and from 1968 through 1973 when it was closed permanently. In 1974, Ozark-Mahoning Co. was purchased by Pennwalt Corp. Presently, it is a wholly-owned subsidiary of that corporation. As the only major domestic producer of fluorspar in the US today, the company&apos;s ability to survive under the flood of imported material is directly related to the four major segments of its operations. These are: exploration, mining productivity, maintenance, and marketing. All are done in-house. Exploration The Southern Illinois fluorspar district is located in the most complexly faulted area of the central US. The formations are sedimentary in nature and range in age from Devonian through Pennsylvanian. The deposits are small, they range in size from a few thousand tons up to 900 kt (1 million st), with the average minable deposit being around 544 kt (600,000 st). The ore occurs in both nearly vertical vein deposits and in Manto or flat lying bedded deposits. Due to the relatively small size of the deposits and the depth at which they occur, a good low-cost exploration program is essential to ensure that new finds of ore are equal to the mining extraction rate. Ozark maintains a leased land position in Pope and Hardin Counties that will fluctuate somewhere between a low of 40 km2 (10,000 acres) up to a high of 129 km2 (32,000 acres), depending on total size of tracts leased. Most all lands are obtained through a standard lease purchase option, with a small minimum royalty per acre during the normal 10-year option period. On June 16, 1982, Rio Blanco submitted a request to the US Minerals Management Service for a suspension of operations under its federal oil shale lease. The company also wanted a five-year delay in the requirement for further minimum royalty payments and a five-year extension of the primary lease terms of 20 years. The request was granted in late July in the midst of yet another slump in oil shale activity. Rio Blanco holds one of four Federal oil shale leases that were granted under the Interior Department&apos;s Prototype Oil Shale Leasing Program in 1974. That year the DOI offered for lease six federal oil shale tracts, two each in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. The leases in Colorado and Utah were granted for substantial bo¬nus bids as shown in Table 1, but the Wyoming tracts had no takers. In the eight years hence, no oil shale has been produced commercially. Indeed, the prospects for successful oil shale development have fluctuated widely, continuing a 60-year- old cyclical pattern in the fledgling industry. The prototype program was developed and initiated while this infant industry struggled to begin anew, without the benefit of any federal oil shale leasing regulations, or any history of federal oil shale leasing at all. Permanent regulations were not required because the effort was limited and designed to provide the foundation for any future leasing program. Section 21 of the Mineral Leasing Act of 1920, a Nov. 30,1973 Federal Register notice, and the leases themselves constitute the legal and regulatory framework for leasing and developing prototype oil shale tracts. The prototype leases contain some unusual provisions including installment payments of the bonus bids, credit of early development costs against payments due the government, adjustment of royalty rates according to regional crude oil price fluctuations, and unusually extensive and detailed environmental stipulations. Several of the provisions were intended to provide incentives for early development and financial penalties for failure to develop. The requirement for minimum royalty payments in lieu of actual production royalties beginning in the sixth year of the lease falls in the latter category. After the sixth year, the required minimum payment is increased east year through the 15th year by an increment equal to that due in the sixth year. The minimum royalty then remains the same through the final five years of the primary lease term. Minimum royalty is calculates on a different production level for each prototype lease, based on the quantity of 125 L/t (30 gal/st) shale estimated to be recoverable from. each tract by room-and-pillar mining. That mining system was selected for reference as the only proven extraction method for oil shale at that time (early 1970s) The minimum royalty (production) rate was calculated for each tract by direct comparison of its estimated recoverable 125-L (30-gal) resource to a hypothetical tract containing 1.9 Gt (2.1 billion st) of recoverable 125-L (30-gal) shale. For the hypothetical lease tract, the minimum production for the sixth year was calculated to be 3.2 kt/d (3,500 stpd), increasing by a like amount each lease year through the 15th to a daily production rate of 31.7 kt (35,000 st). Under this formula, the hypothetical lease tract would yield $16 million in minimum royalty payments over the 20-year primary lease term if there were no production, no development credits taken, and no adjustment of the royalty rate due to fluctuation of regional crude oil prices. The production rate of 31.7 kt/d (35,000 stpd) was a somewhat arbitrary figure that was considered, in the early 1970s, to represent a minimum size for a commercial oil shale operation. A production rate of 7.9 dam3/d (50,000 bbls/day) soon supplanted that smaller mine production figure as a rule of thumb for the minimum size for a commercial facility. The proportional relation-
