"Every year the tunneling business is expanding and collaboration with the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP) for the future design of cities and urban communities is in the making. During the last half of this century, billions of people migrated to cities, and it is estimated that by 2030 almost five billion people worldwide will reside in urban communities. Hence, “Underground development will be an important tool in reshaping our urban areas to meet the challenges of the future without destroying their heritage or worsening their surface environment” (Esaki, 2005). In 2013, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) estimated life expectancy to be around 80 years, meaning that in less than a decade we will need to bury billions of people in cities and urban communities, while trying to retain the deceased’s beliefs and customs. Religion plays a major role in our lives, and many people worldwide still decline to cremate their body after their death; therefore, cemeteries are essential for city inhabitants. Rites and traditions usually call for burials to be near the place of residence, which allows the remaining family members and friends to visit the grave frequently, at least in the first years. This is a challenge that urban designers and architects must confront while trying to solve the problems of future urbanization. In recent years, population growth, the rising cost of land and the extensive preservation of green areas have made cemeteries a burden and a nuisance, particularly for large cities and communities. Many graveyards that were once on the city's outskirts have become lifeless islands in populated areas (Fig. 1), rarely visited by the second and later generations. Cities worldwide face the challenge of allocating less land to maintain current burial practices. In response, some cities have begun to bury their dead at a great distance from the community; others have started to stacked burials, one on top of the other, while still others are constructing buildings and even skyscrapers for the practice of burial (Fig. 2)."

The Sunro Copper Mine is near the south coast of Vancouver Island about 35 miles west of Victoria. Failure of the roof of a large open stope let a good sized mountain stream into the mine. Broken are, boulders and sand were washed into the underground mill and out through a 7 800-foot adit. The adit became plugged; water burst out an a ridge above the adit, washing out the portal and o trestle by which it was reached, Rock and ore are strong but several systems of steep, pronounced but generally tight fractures are found on and parallel to the walls of the orebody. The stope was started from a slusher drift 390 feet below the bed of the River and brought up to an elevation 155 feet below the River by blasting vertical and horizontal rings of longholes in the nearly vertical orebody. Mining was stopped there and five months were given to grouting and bolting the pillar under the bed of the River, During this time and for several months thereafter sloughing increased the width, length and height of the stope. At the last known observation the stope was 77 to 96 feet wide, 185 feet long and the highest point of the domed back was only 55 feet below the River. The flooding took no lives. In other respects, however, it might be difficult to find in mining lore o more savage example of the application of "Murphy's Laws".

The mechanism shown here (Fig. 1) may not be all that it appears to be. To many of you it may look like a hopper car, a thing of mobility, in which you would ship coal, ores, limestone, or other bulk materials. It is approximately 50 feet long, 12 feet high, and can be placed on tracks which are on approximate 14 foot centers. But far too often in the past, and all too often today, this mechanism has been made to serve as an immobile storage box, with its primary role -- the transportation of products, seemingly incidental to the storage function. Our engineering training teaches us to conserve resources, despite some of the popular and misconceived philosophies being advanced these days. Those of you who work for companies with traffic departments know that they are always striving to reduce the price which is paid to move your mine products. Today, let's consider and analyze the ways in which the cost of transporting your mine products might be reduced, based on particular reference to coal. Bear in mind that in this context, cost and price are not necessarily synonymous. Until a few years ago, most coal and other bulk materials handled by railroads moved under standard tariff rules. These rules, which still exist today, provided transportation vehicles (railroad cars) for extended periods at no added price to the shipper or receiver. Fibre reinforced shotcrete in combination with other types of support systems is becoming the leading support method for underground excavations, especially those present in low quality rock masses. Sudden or rapid ground support failure can expose workers to safety hazards, damage to equipment and others resulting in production interruptions that will impact the cost of operation. Knowing the peak and post-peak strength characteristics of the support system over time are of major importance. Round Determinate Panel Testing of fiber reinforce shotcrete is the primary test used by the mining industry to determine strength characteristics; however, the tests are costly and significant manpower is required in a mine environment to build, store, handle and test the panels. For these reasons numerical modeling can result in an effective method to produce realistic results. This paper examines the strength characteristics Round Determinate Panel tests and its ultimate application in underground excavations, using Itasca?s three dimensional particle flow code (PFC3D).

Oxides are important for use in the production of metals, ceramic hardware, paints, permanent magnets, magnetic recording tapes and many other uses. In some of these applications, particle morphology, degree of crystallinity, purity, and homogeneity are relatively insignificant, while for other uses, these same properties are of critical importance. Many conventional processes are based upon recovery of the oxides from aqueous solutions by processes which include neutralization, evaporation of solvent, and precipitation of a complex salt. Consequently, many of these techniques lead to oxides of low quality. There is a growing demand for oxides of high quality, i.e., materials with narrow particle size distribution, controlled particle morphology, high purity, few structural defects, and high degree of crystallinity and homogeneity. This demand has prompted industry to search for new approaches for the manufacture of these special materials. One new approach for preparing high quality oxides is hydrothermal precipitation. This process has been used for preparing simple oxides such as ZrO2; mixed oxides such as ZrO2-SiO2; and complex oxides such as BaTiO3. These oxides were prepared in a high state of purity with a high degree of crystallinity and., in many cases, without the addition of precipitants. Many impurities- that are normally precipitated by conventional methods such as neutralization present no problem since they remain in solution. Nature of the process and its applications are discussed in this article.

This paper discusses the economic zones of application for several different types of earthmoving equipment: dozers, wheel loaders in load-and-carry applications, wheel tractor scrapers, articulated trucks, rigid-frame trucks and wagons. Only the medium to large pieces of equipment were considered. From this chart (Figure 1), you can see the size range, in tons of carrying capacity, of Caterpillar equipment and the specific models analyzed.

Most prediction methods used to calculate mining-induced subsidence rely on empirical formulations, which typically assume flat topography and uniform properties in the overburden. It is also well known that when a longwall panel mines below a valley bottom surface ground deformation magnitudes and orientations may be significantly influenced by the presence of the valley. This paper discusses ground deformation data collected at different surface locations above the Buchanan mine in the eastern United States. Measurements at individual surface points and strata movement measurements using a three-point extensometer have been collected as the area was undermined. Measurements correspond to the mining of the panel immediately under the measurement points and to the mining of adjacent panels. Measurement locations correspond to valley bottom locations. The measurements are critically evaluated and compared with respect to topography and panel face location. The issue of the fluctuation of GPS measurements is also discussed.

Marble is a preferred surfacing material in up-scale buildings. Its use increased in the 1870's with rising national wealth and declined in the 1950's when synthetic materials for these applications were developed. Natural marble is now limited to high-end domestic and commercial structures. Cultured marble is a paste of white marble dust and polyester resin cured in molds yielding fixtures of specific finished dimensions. Dyes incorporated at different stages in the mixing cycle mimic shades and veining of natural marble. This paper discusses the filler requirements for cultured marble production and reviews new techniques to cut and finish natural marble.

An overland conveyor system was installed to convey the ore from the primary crusher to the process plant. In 1994 Western Mine Engineering, Inc., (WME), which is now InfoMine USA, Inc., set out to build a suite of stand-alone software programs that would provide their clients the means to estimate the costs of developing and operating mineral exploitation projects. After the first program (Sherpa for Surface Mines) was completed and launched, the developer (me) left WME to form Aventurine Engineering, Inc., in order to complete the series of applications. In the years since, four programs have either been developed or upgraded and enhanced. Applications were produced that estimate the costs of underground mining, placer mining, and project site reclamation. In addition, an application specifically designed to evaluate the economics of these projects, which was based upon a program previously developed for WME by Bill Willoughby of Willoughby & Associates, was redesigned and the code updated to a MicroSoft compatible platform. All these programs follow an engineering-based approach to cost estimating. Instead of relying on rules-of-thumb and statistical averages, they calculate all of the engineering and operational parameters needed to estimate costs. The premise is that the uncertainty associated with cost estimates should lie with the data available for the resource, not the approaches used to design and estimate the associated design parameters. In other words, it is acceptable that items such as the resource grades, deposit dimensions, ore and wall rock characteristics, and mill recovery rates carry with them some uncertainty, but parameters such as loader bucket capacities, truck speeds, pump horsepowers, hoist velocities, and grinding mill diameters can be calculated (although uncertain data might be used in those calculations). No additional uncertainties should be introduced because the cost-estimating procedure relied upon statistical manipulation or anecdotal inaccuracies. To that end, the programs rely upon calculation-based approaches to selecting and sizing machinery, assigning the required workforce, and determining the extent of the consumables needed to recover mineralized material at a rate defined by the client. And while calculation-based software is not unusual, more modern approaches work toward the development, accumulation, and manipulation of data. INITIAL CONDITIONS AND PROJECT GOALS In 2016 we had five separate programs completely disconnected from one another. Each was written in VisualBasic, a language that was falling from favor. In essence, the status in 2016 was a series of stand-alone programs (Figure 1) in which results from one needed to be manually entered as input into another.

The Bureau of Mines has evaluated the effectiveness of the safety elements used to prevent tunnel methane explosions. These fa1l under the general categories of better ventilation, better gas monitoring, reducing ignition sources, and improved worker training. For this evaluation, a technique called fault-tree analysis was used to analyze questionnaire responses from 27 tunneling experts. This analysis allowed us to rank the effectiveness of each safety element, and indicates where money is best spent to reduce the chance of a methane explosion. Results indicated that large decreases in the explosion hazard only take place with the simultaneous application of several elements. Most of these involve a human component - the everyday vigilance and awareness of those working underground.

Column flotation continues to make inroads into applications traditionally dominated by mechanical flotation cells. For example, columns are becoming more visible as rougher flotation devices. At Royal Mountain King Mine in California, two 2.9 m (9.5 ft) diameter columns are used for rougher flotation of carbon from a gold ore (Orlich et al, 1992). In addition, work performed at BRGM in France demonstrated the superiority of column flotation over mechanical flotation with respect to design of new plants (Morizot et al, 1991). With the mounting evidence, columns can succeed in any flotation application. The primary reasons for this acceptance of columns are a general improvement in design, scale-up and operation as well as improvements in sparger design and performance. With these advances, the full benefits of column flotation can be realized. The benefits of properly designed, aerated and operated flotation columns include: ? Lower Capital Costs ? "SUMMARY Every tunnel designer has to consider the power of water ingress when designing a new tunnel. Either you choose solutions with simple methods to divert the ingress water or a robust system with the intention that it will give gain on low maintenance costs and a long lifetime. This article describes a new method to divert ingress water in a robust way and more economical than traditional concrete lined tunnels. This system is based on a bolt grid suspending a water tight membrane, which is reinforced and covered with sprayed concrete. The method has been in limited use in Sweden since 2005 and with continuous improvement, still going on, it is now applied for the large project “Stockholm Bypass”, a 21km long highway project. TUNNEL MAINTENANCE RELATED TO WATER INGRESS The Swedish Transport Administration maintain approximately 190 various tunnels that is constructed by a number of different methods, (Swedish Transport Adm 2015). Commonly the ground conditions are good and fairly low ground support is needed. Contrary water and winter conditions can be sever, which gives high impact onto the tunnel design and in particular methods to protect against “frost and water ingress”. During a tunnels lifetime it is common that maintenance related to water ingress occurs several times and sometimes frequent occasions every year. Such maintenance costs and consequences of lost open time for the tunnel can rapidly become higher than the initial cost of the tunnel. Thereby it is obvious that spending time during design to evaluate requirements for a suitable system against water ingress is preferred. Icicles Icicles are formed when water is below freezing degrees and drips or run from an ingress point. At very cold conditions also water flows running at high velocity freeze into ice and a rapid growth can appear. If the integrity of the tunnel traffic area is interfered by icicles they urgently have to be removed before they cause an accident. Typically the tunnel or a part of the tunnel must be closed to do such maintenance. TUNNELS FROST AND WATER INGRESS PROTECTION IN SWEDEN In Sweden methods to perform “frost and water ingress protection” are primary developed for drill and blast tunnels as it is most common tunneling method. The foundation Swedish Rock Engineering Research has done a comprehensive report SveBeFo Rapport 77 that describes water and frost prevention in Swedish tunnels up to year 2005. Below is only slight description of those various methods. Lately some more attention is paid to concrete lined tunnels made by TBM since TBMs successfully built water tight tunnels in City Tunnel (Malmö) and Hallandsås Project. When environmental demands require maintained ground water levels, water tight tunnels made by pressurized concrete lining becomes more economical and on the same time also becomes protected from icicles and water drips."

As per the current conceptual design presented by the Department of Energy, the exploratory shaft facility (ESF) becomes a part of the repository if the Yucca Mountain site is found suitable for repository development. Therefore, the design of the ESF should be compatible with the performance requirements for the repository. The construction methods selected should limit to the extent practical, the degree and the extent of damage to the surrounding rock mass. The ESF construction and operation should be compatible with the site data gathering activities, such as geological, thermomechanical, hydrological and geochemical testing.

"In the early 1920’s, the City of Tulsa, Oklahoma constructed an approximately 8,238-foot long tunnel, the Tiawah Tunnel, through bedrock. Voids behind the concrete tunnel liner were detected via probe drilling in early 2000 as part of an interior visual condition assessment. In 2012 and 2015, conditions along the entire tunnel were efficiently assessed through geophysical investigation using ground penetrating radar (GPR) along the inner tunnel crown and at various select locations within the tunnel. Fifty-seven (57) potential voids, extending up to 19 inches in depth and 12 feet in width, were detected with 1,000 MHz GPR and confirmed through probe drilling with approximately 80% accuracy. GPR proved to be an efficient and reliable technology for void detection behind concrete tunnel lining. This paper highlights the geophysical investigation and how geophysical efforts were combined with other investigation efforts to definitively determine the presence of voids outside of the tunnel lining.INTRODUCTION The city of Tulsa, Oklahoma has a population of about 400,000 people. The original source of water for the city was the Arkansas River. The first pumping operation provided untreated water to homes and businesses in 1904. The residents of Tulsa found this water to be unacceptable due to the high levels of salt and gypsum present. As the city grew, land and storage/treatment facilities were acquired in order to obtain and distribute a more suitable raw water. The raw water needs for the city are currently satisfied by transport and treatment of about 100 million gallons per day (MGD) of water from surface water sources. Water is transported many miles from Spavinaw/Eucha and Oologah lakes to Yahola Lake and the Lynn Lane Reservoir (totaling over 3-billion gallon capacity). From here, the raw water is treated and transported to the various customers (City of Tulsa 2015). The Tulsa Metropolitan Utility Authority (TMUA) is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the raw water transport system."

The Larox Power PF Pressure Filter has been developed to meet the challenges of ever increasing output tonnages demanded by the minerals processing industry. This paper will highlight recent experiences at the Rudna Copper Concentrator in Poland, the Escondida Copper Concentrator in Chile and some large zinc concentrators in Australia. Detailed maintenance and operating cost information will be disclosed. Emphasis will be placed on economics on scale gained from higher machine throughputs.

Metal prices are often predicted by relying on time trend projections of various economic indicators or even the trend in price itself Thus, time is the underlying explanatory variable acting through at best, a limited selection of economic variables. The price prediction method described in this paper differs from this by analyzing hundreds of economic variables to develop a few principle components that automatically capture the fundamental changes in the economy and delete duplicate or irrelevant information. This leaves a few principle variables to describe a state-space representation of the economy which can then be used for prediction. Forecasts of the price of a metal are then made based on these principle variables.

The authors summarize the liner systems used at many of Chile's major copper producers both operating and planned. The evolution in the state of the art is also discussed, considering both economic factors and Chile's burgeoning environmentalism.
