THE CIP PROCESS "IN THE RIGHT PLACE AT THE RIGHT TIME? After its tentative introduction to the precious metals mining industry in the earlier part of this century, the carbon in pulp (CIP) process has now come of age, and is the process of choice on all new gold mills. Well over 50 percent of all gold that is mined each year is recovered by adsorption on activated carbon, and the percentage will increase in the years ahead, when old mills using Merrill Crowe technology come to the end of their lives, and as the proportion of world gold production from low-grade resources increases. The pioneering process development work in this field, which was mainly concerned with carbon elution, was carried out by Zadra and his colleagues at the United States Bureau of Mines in the early 1950's (Zadra et al., 1950, 1952), and led to the commissioning of the first large-scale, industrial CIP plant, at the Homestake Mine in South Dakota, in 1973 (Hall et al., 1974). From there, the process spread rapidly, firstly in South Africa in the late 1970's. and then throughout the rest of the gold producing world in the 1980's. There were several factors that led to the meteoric (by gold industry standards) acceptance and successful implementation of this new technology into gold processing operations worldwide. Firstly, and perhaps most fortuitously, the development of the technology closely paralleled the 1968 release of the gold price from the rigid constraints of the $35/oz. gold standard. With the value of the metal allowed, for the first time in modern history, to fluctuate in response to free market supply and demand forces, the gold industry witnessed an unprecedented boom as the price of their commodity increased ten-fold in a remarkably short period of time. This had several important spin-offs as far as new process developments were concerned: The profits realized by established gold-mining companies increased enormously and, consequently, there was more to spend on research and development and exploration for new deposits.

Comminution is the single most expensive operation in mineral processing. It consumes about 50% of the energy required for mineral extraction (Agar, 1976). Current comminution technology is both energy-intensive and inefficient. A novel noncontact comminution process concept was developed in this study, whereby selective lib¬eration of minerals from an ore could be potentially achieved. The process involves application of electric and ultrasonic energy to liberate minerals from gangue particles. Introduction The mineral industry is a large user of energy in the US. Energy usage is increasing as the grade of ores processed decreases. It is es¬timated that comminution of ores uses about 32 000 kWh (115 trillion kJ), or 2% of the electric power produced in the US (NMAB-365, 1981). Among other minerals, ce¬ment, iron, and copper processing plants are the largest users of en¬ergy in comminution. Very little of this energy used in conventional grinding (about 1%) is used to gen¬erate new surface. The remainder is wasted (Table 1). Thus, there are substantial energy-saving and economic incentives to improve the efficiency of crushing and grinding techniques for mineral recovery. With an energy efficiency of only 1%, it would seem possible to devise methods to significantly improve comminution technology. This requires that breakage force be applied only where needed, not indiscriminately as in a conven¬tional ball mill (NMAB-365, 1981). Can apparatus and methods be de¬ veloped for large-scale commer¬cial use that allow energy to be fo¬cused at intergranular bounda¬ries? If this can be done, mono¬mineral grains would remain in¬tact and the grinding action would be selective and substantially more efficient. The novel comminution process concept described in this paper uses a combination of electric and ultrasonic energy. This energy breaks the ore and selectively lib¬erates minerals. The process has also been termed a two-stage or electroacoustical comminution process (Goldberger, Epstein, and Parekh, 1982). The mineral grain boundary is usually the weakest area in an ore. By applying electri¬cal energy to the ore, the rock frac¬tures mostly at grain boundaries. At the same time, the electric shock creates secondary hairline fractures in the ore. Additional application of ultrasonic energy to this ore provides further break¬age. The concept was proven on a molybdenum porphyry ore but needs additional study. Technical Background There have been substantial im¬provements in milling machinery and grinding operations, but rela¬tively few attempts have been made to develop alternatives to conventional impact milling. Sev¬eral methods, however, have been investigated that relate to this study. In the early 1970s there was considerable interest in a size re¬duction method known as the Snyder Process (Cavanaugh, 1972). It involved charging coarse ore into a pressure chamber, pressur¬izing with a gas, and activating a quick-opening (15 msec ) dis¬charge valve that connected the chamber to a discharge duct. This allowed solids to fluidize and ac¬celerate, subjecting the material to a variety of impulse phenomena that caused the desired size reduction. Other nonimpact means of achieving breakage and selective size reduction have been de¬scribed in technical and patent literature. Kanellopoulos and Ball (1975) considered using heat to induce thermal stress in quartz¬ite. This would cause cracking and, thus, increase grinding efficiency. Nothing in Turkey is simple. Its his¬tory is long and convoluted, its culture fascinating, its metallogeny diverse, and its geology very complex. This article will focus on the geology of western Anatolia and the precious metals poten¬tial of this third of Turkey. Any gold produced by mines in Tur¬key since the early 1900s has been a by-product of the mining for other met¬als, such as copper from the massive sulfide deposits of the Pontics. Archaeological records, however, prove that gold was mined from the Pactolus (present day Gediz) River and refined by Croesus at Sardis in about 550 BC. Other records and legends make it possible that gold was mined before 1200 BC for the Homeric City of Troy (Priams treasure?) about 25 km (15 miles) east of Canakkale at Mad¬endag and Kartaldag. A final legend of antiquity suggesting gold in what is now Turkey relates to King Midas. And, indeed, the city-state belonging to a king of that name has been recognized near the city of Eskise¬hir. More recently, precious metals have been mined at Madendag-Kartaldag in the late 1800s. Arapdag, near Izmir, remains the only "authenticated" epith¬ermal precious metal deposit in Turkey (Mosier et al., 1985). With this spotty record, why the sud¬den interest shown by at least five Euro¬pean-based, three or four US-based, and several other international mining firms and their Turkish subsidiaries? Like other aspects of Turkey, the complete answer is not simple but, reduced to its basics, has three parts. Turkey, relative to many developing nations, has a stable, democratic form of government (although it also has a for¬midable bureaucracy) whose currency exchange rate is premised on the US dollar. New laws promulgated since 1983 have opened the country and welcomed foreign investment. Some have even provided investment incentives. The Mining Law of August 1985 made sweeping reforms of the old land tenure system. This law made it possible for a foreign-based company to have a wholly-owned Turkish subsidiary en¬gaged in mining. Equally important is the belated recognition that western Anatolia, while geologically compli¬cated, is today basically a province Neogene extensional tectonics having many of the geologic attributes of the leading gold producing province of the US - the Basin and the Range. Geologic rationale for precious metals exploration Tectonic/lithologic framework: Alle¬gorically and simplistically, Anatolia during early Neogene (middle Miocene) can be likened to a tube of toothpaste with the cap off. It is squeezed in the vise formed by the Arabian plate mi¬grating north toward the southwest end of a stable Asian platform. The "tube" was compressed. It could not expand to the east because it was sealed by what is now southern Russia and Iran. The filling of the tube escaped to the west, in the direction in which the cap was miss¬ing (Fig. 1). So developed during the middle to late Miocene the western-most struc¬tural province of Anatolia. This was done by a process aptly termed tectonic "escape" by Sengor et al (1985). This province is dominated by exten¬sional tectonics much like the Basin and Range of the western US and has an estimated extension of between 30% and 50%. The most striking manifesta¬tion of this extension is the 10 to 11 major east-west trending grabens (Ge¬diz, Buyuk Mendares, Kocuk Mendares, etc.) and intervening horsts, although a much greater number of smaller, gener¬ally northeast-striking grabens and half

The percentage of exploration dollars flowing out of the industrialized countries continues at an all-time high, and this shift in risk money is justified (Samuels, 1990; Bosson, 1977). Clearly, the odds of discovery are greatly enhanced if exploration is pursued in an untrampled and geologically more prospective environment. Unfortunately, such major unexplored areas of the developed world are shrinking rapidly, not just because the lands have already been tested, but primarily because they have been withdrawn from exploration. Experience, however, has shown that foreign investment is not without risks. These include problems that result from working in isolated areas, a lack of infrastructure, untrained workers and an absence of a solid geological data base. While the likelihood of once-feared expropriation is now low, mining enterprises still must take precautions to gain the support of their constituencies, including a variety of governments (local, provincial and central), workers, environmentalists, cultural organizations and local landowners. Is foreign exploration worth the risk? In most cases, Yes! But maintaining tenure and long-term success in a less developed country is only likely with good planning and the use of appropriate safeguards. These include measures such as buying country-risk insurance, building multinational relationships, forming joint investments, developing a broad customer base and seeking local investors in the company (Cobbe, 1979). The primary theme of this lecture is: How a company handles its constituency is critical to long-term tenure in a foreign country. Ideally, a multinational mining company would be so effective in dealing with the local people and managing its relationship with the host government that it would become a preferred employer, preferred over its competitors and over local companies. Historical overview Our earliest ancestors lived in Africa three to four million years ago. The Paleolithic or Old Stone Age, about 500,000 years ago, marked the beginning of mining in its earliest form (Gregory, 1980; Wolf, 1984). Various types of rocks and stones were used for tools and weapons, with flint being the preferred resource for implements. Initially, these materials were collected as stones (eoliths) lying on the surface. Then they came from excavations of flint in limestone beds that were exposed in river banks or naturally occurring excavations. Later, more formal mining developed. No doubt tribes of the Old Stone Age experienced conflict over rights to eoliths, food and land. The question of who owns the land and has rights to its contents and what is fair value for extraction is still the subject of intense debate and, occasionally, open conflict. As time passed, the search for useful minerals required migration from one area to another. Later, voyages from Europe to the New World and travels to other remote regions were funded and supported by absentee investors, kings and such (Rogers, 1976). The primary objective of such funding was to obtain gold, silver, food stuffs and other commodities that could be collected from the new countries. This is still the objective of foreign investment.

Introduction Many discoveries have been made during the-past decade of low grade gold-silver deposits in the western US. This has stimulated development of low cost cyanidation procedures for precious metal extraction. Heap leach cyanidation techniques possess considerable potential for application to these low grade ores, small ore bodies, mine strip waste, and tailing materials where fine grinding is not necessary for good extraction. For heap leaching to be successful, these resources must have good permeability to achieve uniform distribution of the cyanide solution throughout the heaps. Some of the most difficult of the gold and silver ores to treat successfully by heap leaching are those containing excessive amounts of clays, or fines generated by crushing. Presence of excessive amounts of slimes, -50 µm (-270 mesh), in the heap leach feed will slow percolation, cause channeling, or produce dormant or unleached areas within the heap. This may result in unreasonably long leaching periods and poor extractions. In extreme cases, the clays or slimes can completely seal the ore heap. This causes the leach solution to run off the sides of the heap rather than penetrate the ore bed. The problem of heap leaching ores with fines can be aggravated while preparing ore heaps because of the natural sorting of coarse and fine material that occurs. This phenomenon results in concentration or ore fines in the center of individual ore piles and concentration of larger rock fragments of the lower slopes and base of the pile. When the individual piles within the heap are leveled off for the installation of the sprinkling system, additional segregation occurs as the fines sift through the coarser ore particles. This results in localized areas or zones with marked differences in permeability. Consequently, the leach solutions follow the course of least resistance. They percolate down through the coarse ore regions and bypass or barely wet areas that contain large amounts of fines or slimes. Effective use of marginal gold and silver resources by heap leaching required development of new methods to achieve more uniform size distribution when preparing ore heaps and better slime control during leaching. Early methods Agglomeration and balling of crushed ore to produce a porous and more uniform feed material for heap leaching is a viable method for treating clayey ores. Researchers from the US Bureau of Mines in Reno, NV began agglomeration pretreatment research in the mid-1970s for applications to and exploitation of these poor percolating feed materials. Little attention had been given to such methods before the Bureau's research. In 1905, T. C. Scrutton developed a unique technique for obtaining rapid vat leaching of a clayey ore where the gold was finely disseminated. His technique consisted of rolling the ore down a chute inclined at 60° to form agglomerates or balls readily permeable by the cyanide solution. However, these agglomerates lacked rigidity. And, to ensure good percolation leaching and washing, they could not be bedded in layers more than 1 m (3 ft) deep. If this depth was exceeded, it is difficult to obtain uniform leaching and washing. This results in reduced gold recovery. Shepard and others in 1937 studied the addition of lime and carbon dioxide or calcium carbonate to gold-bearing tailings to form agglomerates suitable for vat leaching. Satisfactory percolation flow rates were achieved in 90 g (3 oz) scale experiments, but the reagent requirements were cost prohibitive. Agglomeration and pelletizing has been used in other segments of the mineral industry. This technique was first used successfully around 1911 for pelletizing iron ores. Since then, agglomeration

Introduction Treatment of ores to recover metal and mineral values results in waste materials usually in the form of dilute slurries. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) investigated a technique for dewatering phosphatic clay waste by flocculating with polyethylene oxide (PEO) and dewatering the resulting floes on a static screen and/or trommel screen (Schemer et al., 1985). In the investigation, it was determined that PEO was far superior to polyacrylamide polymers for this type of dewatering. This paper discusses reasons for this superior performance. Comparison of PEO with polyacrylamides Dewatering experiments were conducted by adding PEO solution from a burette to a stirred clay slurry. The dewatering endpoint was characterized by rotation of the floc mass as a unit, a clear supernate, a maximum floc size, and a minimum floc volume. Additional water was removed from the floes by hand squeezing (Schemer et al., 1985). The clays investigated were sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and aluminum exchanged montmorillonite and attapulgite. Nine commercially available (Superfloc) polyacrylamides were compared with PEO at two polymer concentrations. Results are summarized in Table 1. The solids content of the dewatered clays ranged between 24% and 33% and was highest for PEO-treated material. These results and the data in Table 1 indicate that PEO is superior to polyacrylamide in terms of polymer dosage required. Superflocs 16 through 128, like PEO, are nonionic and should give similar results to those for PEO if the flocculation mechanism is the same for both type polymers. Superflocs 204 through 214 are anionic with increasing anionic character from 204 to 214. Generally, the anionic polymers gave the best results for the polyacrylamides tested, but in terms of dosage they were not as good as PEO. Correlation between flocculation and dewaterability of waste slurries The overall mechanism for mechanically induced clay dewatering is not completely known, but certain observations can be made. For instance, when a polymer is adsorbed on a clay such as montmorillonite, the polymer desorbs interlayer water. Polymer adsorption is driven by favorable entropy changes associated with this water desorption. It is also known that the -CH2-CH2- links of the PEO chain are sufficiently hydrophobic to lead to physical adsorption of the polymer (Theng, 1979). For montmorillonite slurries, the sheet-like fundamental particles, called tactoids, consist of a small, variable number of aluminosilicate layers together with interlayer water and exchange ions. The flocculation process consists of adsorption of polymer on the tactoid. Loops and tails of polymer that extend into solution then adsorb on another tactoid, forming a bridge. Mechanical action, induced by hand squeezing or in a trammel, joins the bridged tactoids face-to-face and edge-to-edge to form regions of high density. Similar orientation effects are observed for the needle-like attapulgite crystals (Schemer et al., 1985). Proposed flocculation model Generally, statements concerning flocculation and dewaterability apply to both PEO and the polyacrylamides. However, PEO has additional interaction with the clay material when compared with polyacrylamides. PEO is a polymer with repeating -CH2-CH2-O- groups and interacts with montmorillonite through a water bridge whose strength is greatly influenced by the exchange ion. INTRODUCTION The County of Cornwall is situated in the South Western extremity of England, see Fig. 1, and has for hundreds of years been an historical centre of mining activity. In the last century many thousands of Cornish miners emigrated to Canada, U.S.A., Australia and numerous other countries throughout the world to form the nucleii of mining industries in those lands. At present there are four active underground mines within the county, all mining tin, together with a relatively large china clay industry. All the operations are directly or indirectly associated with the three main granite intrusions, namely the Land's End Granite, the Carnmenellis Granite and the Bodmin Moor Granite. The report which follows relates to two mines, owned by the South Crafty Group of Companies, namely the South Crofty Mine itself and its smaller subsidiary, Wheal Pendarves. Both these mines are adjacent to the Carn Brea Granite ridge, see Fig. 2, which is an off-shoot of the main Carnmenellis Granite mass. The Carn Brea Granite has provided one of the most intensive areas of copper and tin mineralisation anywhere in the world. Many of the mines worked during the last two centuries and the early part of this century were situated close to the metamorphic aureole surrounding the granite intrusion. Both South Crofty and Wheal Pendarves have their shafts collared in the overlying slate, locally known as killas, but the major part of their workings are in the granite beneath. The ore bodies, or lodes, of both mines are generally steeply dipping and approximately one to four metres in width. They have been, and continue to be, worked by either back or under-hand stoping with the major level interval being approximately 37 metres. A feature of both stoping systems is that they require no back filling and in many cases the completed working areas have remained open for many years due to the competent wall rock conditions. The stoping operation necessitates having box-holes or draw points at regular intervals along the strike length at 4 to 7 metres centres; thus a stope some 50 metres long may typically have ten box-holes or draw points through which air can percolate into the empty stopes above. The granite country rock contains traces of uranium minerals, namely pitchblende or uraninite, and it is the decay of this uranium mineral which leads to the formation of the mobile radon gas which, together with its short lived daughters, may create a hazard. The presence of uranium minerals has long been known, but the quantities being so minute, it was not appreciated until some ten to fifteen years ago that these might present a hazard. The Mines and Quarries Inspectorate approached Management approximately ten years ago with a view to taking samples in areas of the mine that they felt might contain the highest concentrations of radon. Samples were thus taken in several areas of both mines, normally well away from working areas and where there was no through ventilation. The results of these initial tests were published by the National Radiological Protection Board in a paper entitled "Radon and Its Daughters in Various British Mines". The results of the initial surveys made it apparent that improved ventilation was the most important factor in reducing radon daughter concentrations within the mine atmosphere, with increased flow rates having three beneficial functions, viz. (1) To dilute radon daughter concentrations. (2) To prevent radon and its daughters reaching a state of equilibrium. It is not uncommon for radon and its daughters to have a disequilibrium factor of 1,000 in some uranium mines.

Introduction Brine reservoirs along the Texas and Louisiana Gulf coasts are currently under study to investigate the technical and economic viability of production wells designed to extract methane gas in solution. The effect of well pressure drawdown on reservoir rock and associated overburden material is important to well performance predictions and the analysis of potential subsidence problems. Consequently a series of compaction tests have been conducted on sandstone and shale cored from a test well drilled near Hitchcock, Texas, in order to determine the variation of mechanical properties to be expected over the producing life of the formation. Previous Work The referenced tests are part of an extended study of geopressured-geothermal reservoir behavior, including compaction (Jogi, Gray, Ashman, and Thompson, 1981 and Jogi, Kalra, Gray, and Thompson, 1981) and creep (Thompson, Jogi, Gray, and Richardson, 1981) tests of reservoir rock and related reservoir performance studies (Rago, Okhuma, Seperhnoori, and Thompson, 1985). Recent work has considered the nonlinear constitutive behavior of sandstone (Fahrenthold and Gray, 1985 and 19861, while additional experimental work is reported here. Geological structure and composition of the Hitchcock field from which the core samples were obtained is discussed by Light (1985). Experimental Procedure Compaction tests were conducted on cylindrical cores, nominally 2.75 inches in length and 2 inches in diameter, with independent control of the axial, confining, and pore pressures. Axial and radial deformation of the samples were measured in tests over a range of effective stress states expected to develop over the reservoir lifetime. The term effective stress as used here refers to the algebraic difference of the total stress and pore pressure, with compression taken as positive. Three types of compaction tests were conducted on the sandstone. In the uniaxial tests, axial total stress and radial strain were held constant as the pore pressure was reduced, similating one dimensional compaction which may occur during reservoir depletion. In the triaxial tests, radial total stress and pore pressure were held constant as the axial total stress was increased, duplicating conventional rock compaction test procedures. In the pore pressure drawdown tests, axial and radial total stresses were held constant while the pore pressure was reduced, in order to investigate differences in sample response to mechanical and pore pressure loading. Compaction tests were also conducted on shale material obtained from the reservoir overburden. The field coring process provided few consolidated shale sections sufficiently large to allow preparation of samples with the dimensions described above. With additional attrition during sample preparation of this brittle material, ultimate yield of the coring effort was limited. The few available samples were tested in uniaxial and triaxial tests similar to those described above. The use of displacement transducers to measure sample deformation avoided the difficulty of strain gauge installation on this material. Test Results The sandstone and shale both demonstrated nonlinear stress-strain behavior, with hysteresis and residual strain present upon unloading. Polynomial interpolation of the stress-strain curves was used in the calculation of incremental values for the loading and unloading moduli. Figures 1 and 2 show example axial effective stress-axial strain curves for triaxial tests conducted on sandstone and shale samples. The figures plot incremental stress and strain variables, defined as deviations from the state of prestress to which the sample was subjected. The state of prestress was varied between tests in order to investigate material behavior over the entire stress and strain space of interest. Semiautogenous milling was the subject of 18 papers presented at the SME Fall Meeting in Albuquerque, NM. The process design and scale-up of SAG mills was discussed in several papers. These included a review of testing methods for the sizing of SAG mills by Barrett and Allan. Austin et al. presented an improved simulation model for SAG mill grinding, with model validity demonstrated against pilot plant SAG mill test results. Rogovin et al. presented some pilot plant results relating to the charge motion, hold-up, and particle size segregation in SAG mills. A number of papers described improvements achieved in operating SAG mill circuits. These included presentations by Dailey concerning mills at the National Steel Pellet Co., by Brown and Pipke concerning the Island Copper grinding circuit, by Lovering of Afton Mines Ltd., and by Bartrum et al. of Kidston Gold Mines Ltd. Bush and Hegerle of Amax also discussed SAG mill operations at the company's Henderson mill. They addressed the topics of SAG mill grinding economics. Other papers addressed the topics of SAG mill control (Vanderbeek et al. and Pennington), grinding media (Meulendyke et al.), liners (Kjos), and fabrication (Carr and Utley). The 1985 AIME Annual Meeting in New York featured four technical sessions concerning size reduction technology and practice. Papers involving fundamentals included one by Hinde describing simulation model usage for quantifying the classification and concentration of heavy minerals in grinding circuits. Another, by Rogers et al., discussed simulation models that were used as a design aid in evaluating screens versus hydrocyclones for fine grinding circuits. Arbiter discussed dimensional considerations in grinding mill design, and Schwechten and Schonert proposed the use of a high pressure roll mill as a means for reducing energy requirements in fine grinding. Internal classification in tumbling mills was the subject of a paper by Hogg and Rogovin. The mechanism of internal classification were identified and their effects illustrated. Simulation for the process design of ball mills was exemplified in a paper by Rogers, Austin, and Brame concerning phosphate grinding in laboratory to large diameter mills. The incorporation of liberation into size reduction models was the subject of papers by Austin et al., Herbst et al., and Choi et al. Gupta used simulations models to further investigate zero order fines production in ball and rod mills. Of the published literature, many articles on size reduction were published in various publications in 1985. Articles concerning ball mill grinding included an analysis of interstitial gas effects in dry grinding by Cottaar et al., an analysis of mill grinding noise by Watson, studies of factors affecting breakage rates in dry milling by Gupta et al., and in wet milling by Tangsathitkuchai and Austin. Austin and Klimpel presented two papers concerning ball wear and ball size distribution effects. Koka et al., and Gotsis et al., described recent developments concerning the Szego mill. A model for hammer milling circuits was described in papers by Gotsis et al. and Gotsis and Austin. Heim et al. reported on wet grinding in Perl mills, and Kuga et al. presented findings concerning pulverizing in a screen mill. Studies of grinding effects on particle surfaces were published by Meloy and Hofmann et al., and Scieszka proposed a technique to investigate pulverizing properties of coals. Austin and Rogers discussed factors of powder technology of significance in industrial size reduction in mills and crushers. (Space limitations preclude listing of references. Disposal of solid and liquid wastes from mining and milling operations has become a focus of attention in recent years. Consequently, the geotechnical engineer is more frequently associated with design of disposal facilities. Jack Wulff, a representative of one consulting firm with experience in this field, talks with ME about the geotechnical engineer's contribution. Mr. Wulff, mine and mill waste disposal today is receiving more attention-and many more dollars-than in the past. Regulatory agencies have promulgated demanding requirements concerning mill waste (especially uranium mill waste) and specialist consultants are frequently being called in to design disposal systems. What can the experienced geotechnical engineer add to the development of waste disposal facilities? It's true that geotechnical engineers have recently become more visible in the minerals sector, but we've been around mining for a long time-as foundation engineers for mills and mine support buildings, and for geotechnical aspects of open pits, pipelines, railroads, roads, and so forth. We've also designed water supply dams, which could be considered recursors of tailings dams and other forms of disposal systems. Let me show by example what geotechnical engineering can contribute to waste disposal facility design. I recently was asked to look at several small wastewater impoundments which had failed. The design of the earth embankments appeared, at first glance, to be rather conservative. They were only about 3.4 m high, the slopes were 3 to 1 (horizontal to vertical), with about 24 m of bottom contact with the earth foundation. But there had been three episodes of dike failure in a few months, all upon initial filling. The problem was the nature of some material in the foundation that was also used as structural fill-a dispersive clay that readily deflocculated and eroded on contact with water, especially with seeping or flowing water. The design did not include the defensive measures required to use such materials confidently in water retention structures. Apparently, the designer did not recognize the potential problem posed by the unusual soil characteristics. That's the sort of engineering information fundamental to geotechnical engineering, but not necessarily a part of the civil, structural, or mining engineer's professional training or experience. This difference in expertise is not simply a matter of factual knowledge-it also affects the design process. The structural engineer can design a structure to fit the client's functional needs and can specify the materials (grade of steel, PVC, concrete, etc.) to meet the demands of the design. The geotechnical engineer's design process is somewhat different, since we work with natural materials, not man-made materials produced according to specification. We first have to establish what kinds of materials are available (usually directly from the chosen site, since importation of materials becomes expensive). Then we determine the engineering properties and characteristics and, finally, design the structure to fulfill the client's requirements within parameters dictated by available materials. In brief, the geotechnical engineer works with naturally-evolved, not man-made, materials and uses design techniques developed to accommodate that fact. Because no two sites are exactly alike in configuration, structural (geologic) characteristics, or available materials, there will be unique design and judgmental questions to be resolved on virtually every project. You said that water retention dams could be considered the precursors of tailings dams-you probably had a specific technical relationship in mind. There's a very strong carryover of methodology from earth dam design, where the technology developed and where it has become very refined. It is used in combination with a demister (mist eliminator) to remove dust from the dust-laden air. A study was conducted to measure the pressure drop across a flooded-bed wire-mesh screen at different airflow rates in onephase (dry) and two-phase (wet) conditions. Two empirical relationships between pressure drop and air velocity were developed for dry and wet conditions, respectively. In both cases, the form of the empirical relationships was found to be similar to relationships given by Sabri Ergun for high velocity non-Darcy single and multi-phase flow through porous media. On behalf of my agency, the Mine Safety and Health Administration, I would like to add my appreciation that all of you could be here today. Previous dust symposia over the years have proved the value of close cooperation among universities, government agencies, and professional societies in advancing knowledge of dust research and development in the interest of miners and the industry. I'll just comment briefly on MSHA's part of the overall effort by all parties to control miners' exposure to respirable coal dust and other airborne dusts. As you know, our agency's congressional mandate is to do what is necessary to assure that miners will have safe and healthful workplaces. In the area of coal mine health, this has meant joining with the mining community in a continuous campaign to keep respirable dust and quartz levels below applicable standards to prevent or reduce disabling coal workers' pneumoconiosis and silicosis arising from excessive exposure to respirable quartz. Currently, our agency is processing about 120,000 coal dust samples taken by MSHA and company people during the year and about 8,000 samples taken from metal and nonmetal mining operations. Our dust program, like other MSHA programs, has benefited from increased computerization of records. The attack on CWP has had the highest priority of government and industry. The goal has been to sharply reduce social costs of suffering victims and their families as well as the associated future payments under the black lung benefits program. During the 1989 fiscal year, about 104,000 former miners received about one and a half billion dollars in benefits. Since the program began, nearly 25 billion dollars have been paid out. Much progress has been made in lowering dust levels in coal mines since the standard of two milligrams per meter of air was established in 1972. Before that time, there was a 4-to-10-percent probability of a miner developing coal workers' pneumoconiosis at typical pre-1972 exposure levels. However, under the maximum respirable dust levels allowed today, this probability has been reduced to about 1 percent. Since average dust levels are lower today, we can expect fewer miners to develop CWP in the future. Out goal continues to be elimination of both coal workers' pneumoconiosis and silicosis in both coal and nonmetal mining. In 1985, MSHA revised its coal mine quartz policy to allow mine operators to submit dust samples used in setting the quartz standard. Previously, only single MSHA samples were used. Even though less than half of the mine operators have taken advantage of this change, it has provided a larger population of samples for analysis then before. Also the policy allows operations that are on a reduced quartz standard to have the standard reviewed every six months. In underground coal mining, the job of roof bolter typically has higher than normal exposures to quartz. About 45 percent of respirable dust samples from roof bolting operations contain more than 5 percent quartz and therefore are put on a reduced quartz standard. One objective of the policy revision was to improve miners' health by follow-up monitoring, and this is being done with roof bolting jobs. MSHA studies of surface coal mining operations have provided data showing that bulldozer operators and highwall rotary drill operators often have high exposure to quartz dust, and our agency is directing enforcement efforts to reducing this hazard. INTRODUCTION The air flow in the mine ventilation network can be categorized in three ways: natural splitting, controlled splitting, and semi-controlled splitting. In natural splitting, the air flow in branches of a ventilation network apportions itself according to the aerodynamic resistance of the branches. In controlled splitting, a prescribed quantity of air is circulated through each branch. In semi-controlled splitting, flow in some branches is fixed to a desired quantity while in other branches it is split naturally. In practice, the mine ventilation networks present the latter two situations. Usually, the resistance of each branch in the network is known and the quantity of air in the working place is predetermined by safety considerations. If the number of branches whose airflow quantities are known is equal to or larger than the number of the fundamental meshes in the network, then the network becomes a controlled splitting network (Wang, 1982 a). Otherwise, it is a semi-controlled splitting network. If no booster fans are used in the network, the problem can be solved as either controlled or semi-controlled splitting networks in order to determine the main fan pressure and regulator size and location. All techniques are based on Kirchoff's flow and energy conservation laws and Atkinson's Equation. Booster fans can be used in controlled and semi-controlled splitting networks. It has been proven both theoretically and practically that using booster fans in these ventilation systems can improve flow distribution and reduce consumption of power (McPherson et al., 1985). The current techniques used in determination of booster fan location and size include simulation, linear programming, CPM and cutset operation, out-of-kilter, and critical-path crashing. These techniques can be classified into two groups. The first group, including linear programming, CPM and cutset operation, out-of-kilter, and critical-path crashing techniques, deals with controlled flow networks. The second, simulation, can be applied to the handling of semi-controlled flow networks. Mathematically, the problem of controlled splitting networks can be solved more easily than that of semi-controlled splitting networks. This is because the controlled flow network can be formulated as a linear programming problem, for the solution of which there are several sophisticated algorithms. Moreover, the semi-controlled flow network is usually modeled through nonlinear programming, for which there are no universally applicable solutions. The procedure described by Wu and Topuz, 1986, can be used to convert a semi-controlled network to a controlled flow network, and the problem can then be easily solved by the techniques used for solution of a controlled flow network problem. In practice, a mine ventilation network may change from controlled splitting to semicontrolled splitting with advancement of mining. This dynamic nature of mine ventilation makes the problem more complicated and necessitates development of new solution procedures which will consider the overall economics of the system. CONTROLLED SPLITTING NETWORK The problem in controlled splitting networks with booster fans is to determine the operational characteristic of the main fans, and the location and size of booster fans and regulators. The objective is to satisfy the air flow rate requirement for each branch while minimizing consumption of energy. The techniques used for the controlled splitting network problem include linear programming, CPM and cutset operation, out-of-kilter, and critical-path crashing. MINERALS INFORMATION PROGRAM Mineral data collection by the Federal Government actually began in 1882 with an appropriation by Congress to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Although the Bureau of Mines was instituted in 1910, it was not until 1924 that the collection, interpretation, and dissemination of worldwide information on production, consumption, and availability of minerals became the responsibility of the Bureau. The objective of the Bureau's minerals information program is to maintain and provide reliable, timely, and comprehensive data for analysis of national minerals problems. This program is implemented by a staff of specialists who cover about 100 mineral commodities and the mineral industries of 168 countries. Data are also provided on the minerals industry on the State and county level. The specialists analyze information to identify trends and problems, forecast future U.S. and world supply and demand for the nonfuel minerals, and relate trends and developments to their impact on the domestic minerals industry. Data Sources and Publications The primary sources of data concerning the domestic minerals industry are the companies that produce, use, and trade in these minerals. Approximately 60,000 survey forms are sent to industry, on a monthly, quarterly, semiannual, or annual basis, to obtain the data. Domestic trade data are provided by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce. Information on mineral developments abroad is developed by Bureau specialists from mineral reports supplied by U.S. embassies worldwide, from primary source documents, from a review of the technical mining literature, and from onsite mine and plant visits in foreign countries. The information is disseminated through a number of Bureau publications: "Mineral Industry Surveys" provide aggregated data on a monthly. quarterly, or semiannual basis to give timely information on the most important mineral commodities. "Mineral Commodity Summaries," published each January, provides preliminary annual data on supply and demand and discusses significant events of the previous year. The final data are published later in the "Minerals Yearbook," which is the definitive historical record for mineral statistics. "Mineral Facts and Problems," an encyclopedic work issued every 5 years, covers industry structure, technology, supply-demand analysis. economic factors, reserves, and forecasts of U.S. and world demand for individual commodities. "Mineral Perspectives" and "Mineral Issues" cover important international mineral developments and significant issues of current U.S. policy as they relate to minerals. Discussions and analyses of mineral trends and developments also appear in other Bureau publications, such as "Minerals and Materials" and "Information Circulars." These publications provide the basis for analysis and policy determinations by the Bureau and by virtually every Federal agency concerned with minerals, defense issues, the national economy, and foreign relations. The data are also used by industry in planning capital investments in mines and processing plants, by financial analysts, by U.S. delegations in their work with international commodity groups, and by a host of other minerals related organizations. Data Bases The data bases used by the specialists for preparing publications or in response to a continuous stream of inquiries include both those that contain individual commodity data from respondents, and those that are summary data bases on production, trade, capacity, employment and a number of other minerals-related items, not all of which are derived from data reported to the Bureau of Mines. The data bases maintained on the mainframes are not accessible by non- Bureau users. Introduction As the US and world population increases, so does the problem of supplying expanding energy needs. Early requirements worldwide were mostly met by abundant forest vegetation. Man's large scale use of minerals-energy resources is a fairly recent development. It occurred only during the past 200 years. Coal was the first mineral fuel to be used extensively. It was not a large factor in US energy production until the beginning of the 19th century. Petroleum and natural gas use is about 125-years-old. Electricity generation by falling water is about a century old. Atomic energy is only about 30-years-old. Extensive use of it is still in the future. Solar energy is in its infancy. Other energy sources such as wind, peat, and geothermal energy are minor and primarily of local importance. There were three main features of the fuel supply picture during the past 125 years. By 1900 coal replaced wood as the principal energy source. Since 1900, oil and gas have captured many coal markets. And after the mid-1970s, there was a resurgence of coal usage. (Figs. 1 and 2). Wood Until the advent of mineral fuels for energy, the major global energy source was wood. But populations increased and became centered in towns and cities. The problem of a sufficient energy supply first developed as nearby, easily obtained wood was exhausted. This problem became more acute as industries such as shipbuilding, smelting, and pottery making, became more widespread. Results of wood use as an energy source and building material are starkly evident in areas of the world where civilization is oldest. Entire forests were consumed and have never been replaced. In the US, wood supplied 90% of all fuel requirements until about 1850; and more than 50% until after 1880. By 1900, wood still supplied 20% of all energy uses. In the mid-1970s, energy costs increased, due largely to the oil embargo. This increase resulted in an increased wood demand for domestic heating. While large quantities of wood were being used, its share of the total energy market was still less than 3%. By 1983, wood was becoming increasingly scarce and more costly near most large US cities. Wind Wind powered ocean vessels for many centuries. Sailing ships were still common in 1900. Windmills provided an early, cheap energy source and continue to be used today on farms. Design and development of windmills for electricity generation is being conducted. Interest in wind power is growing worldwide where availability of wind currents warrants the investment. Also, US regulation requires power companies to "buy back" electricity generated by windpower in excess of that used by the windmill owner. Coal By the 1600s, England was producing, 900 kt/a (1 million stpy) of coal for heating and other uses. The first coal-fired blast furnace for iron smelting was developed in 1621. Coke-making was developed in 1755, and Watt invented the steam engine in 1769. Illuminating gas made from coal was introduced in London in 1800. During this same 200-year period, France and Germany developed coal production, but on a smaller scale than England. US, bituminous coal was mined near Richmond, VA, as early as 1748. Major bituminous coal-producing states in the early period were Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Illinois, and Maryland. West Virginia replaced Virginia as a major producer, when that state was formed in 1863. As the US expanded west, new coal deposits were found and exploited. Indiana, Alabama, Tennessee, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Washington, Colorado, Wyoming, Arkansas, Oklahoma (Indian Territory), Montana, New Mexico, and Texas had significant coal mining operations by 1900. Today the eight major coal producing states are Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Ohio, Virginia, Wyoming, and Montana. These states accounted for about 80% of all coal (lignite, bituminous, and anthracite) produced in the US during the past several years.

In order to be able to design an adequate mine ventilation system it is necessary to understand how pollutant masses disperse into turbulent ventilation air streams. The mixing of gases and dusts with ventilating air, and dispersion of these pollutants in mine airways, are important flow or transfer problems. For the solution of such problems, the finite difference technique is often used. In this paper, numerical approximation schemes for the solution of the mass transfer problem have been developed using several explicit finite difference schemes. Results from these schemes have been compared with the analytical solution for spatial and time increments using the concept of Root Mean Square error. The comparison of various schemes reveals that the explicit finite difference schemes analyzed here give more accurate results at lower velocities, though the results are dependent on the spatial and time steps considered. At higher velocities the schemes tends to oscillate about the analytical solution. INTRODUCTION In mining, most of the mine air pollutants, such as respirable dust, methane, blasting fumes and diesel exhaust, are produced at the mine face and in haulageways. Injection of any of these pollutants in the mine ventilating air causes disturbances of the equilibrium state of the pollutant concentration of the ventilating air. The mixing of these gases and dusts with the ventilating air are typical examples of mass transfer processes. Pollutants are diluted by the stream of ventilating air flow along airways and discharged into the outside atmosphere of the mine through a return shaft. The dispersions of these pollutants in mine airways are important flow or transfer problems. Knowledge about pollutant sources, emission and transport of these pollutants are essential for ventilation planning and design to ensure good engineering control over air quality, quantity, and environmental conditions. Modeling of mass transfer phenomena in mine ventilation is largely based on extensive studies of turbulent dispersion in wind tunnels and the lower atmosphere of the earth. The general approach in the formulation of models lies in the recognition that these mass transfer phenomena can be conceptualized as a flow problem that can be solved by the general application of Taylor's theory (1954) of turbulent flow and diffusion with modification appropriate static and dynamic parameters. If the face zone is initially contaminated by a pollutant over a long section (e.g. instantaneous exposure of large gas accumulation, rapid methane release etc.), the process of decontaminating the mine workings can be regarded as displacement and diffusion of the tailing edge of the cloud of contaminates in the form of a semi-infinite gas body, for which a one-dimensional mass transfer equation is represented by: [at + u • ax = Ex ex2 + f (x,t)(1.1)] In Eq. (1.1), the term [~~] is the rate of growth of the concentration in the differential element, while a [(5xx )] is the net gain of material due to convective transfer. The two terms balance the total loss of material due to turbulent dispersion that is represented by [Ex . 21] and f(x,t), the source term for the pollutant in the roadway. Several cases of mass transfer that occur in mining can be identified and modelled using the conservative volume element method. The governing equation, along with the associated boundary and initial conditions, source terms and their solutions are detailed elsewhere (Bandopadhyay and Ramani, 1988, Devala, 1989). Only one mass transfer situation is presented (Figure 1) here for the present analysis. Mixed Evolution of Pollutant (multiple pulses) Typical examples of these situations are emission of pollutants from multiple diesel vehicles in the face area, and gas emission from standing pillars as well as from broken coal seam during coal cutting with a continuous miner. Discussion by E.J. Garrison A.C. Noble presents a clear and concise summary of the factors pertinent to a competent reserve evaluation of a mineral occurrence. However, I believe that he confuses the difference between a resource and a reserve. By definition, a reserve estimate includes all known economic, legal, mining, metallurgical and environmental factors impacting the recovery of the product(s) found in the deposit. A resource estimate, however, is an estimate of what is there - what is available for exploitation and should not include economic and other considerations. Only after defining the resource, its extent, location, physical and chemical properties, can an intelligent selection process begin of the extraction and processing technologies most appropriate to the circumstances encountered. The early and almost certainly inappropriate application of these often cookbook choices has probably lead many companies to walk away from good properties. (How many mines have been found in others rejects?) An example of the process is the early selection of metallurgical samples, after encouraging values are found in a few holes or surface samples, in an attempt to determine the economics of the prospect. Unfortunately, the sampler does not know how representative of the occurrence the sample is because he does not know what the deposit looks like. As a consequence, the property becomes saddled with a bad metallurgical sample that is often inappropriately used in evaluating the deposit which it does not represent. Reply by A.C. Noble E.J. Garrison asserts that I confuse the difference between a resource and an ore reserve. In fact, this paper was motivated by the observation that resources and reserves are almost universally confused throughout the industry. While Garrison is concerned that too-early consideration of engineering, metallurgical and economic factors will result in dropping properties too soon, some issues that must be considered include: •The purpose of exploration is to discover ore reserves, not to discover resources. •Ore reserves are always smaller than resources. • Decisions on exploration expenditures must be made based on the expectation of the quantity of ore reserves that will ultimately be defined. Noble's Fig. 2 can be used to give guidance as to when it is appropriate to begin reserve calculations. When exploration enters the "flat" portion of the curve, representative samples can be selected for metallurgical studies and appropriate mining methods chosen. It is at this stage that we know enough about the deposit to make intelligent choices of representative samples and recognize constraints on mining caused by the deposits shape, environment and physical properties. Once the appropriate technologies have been chosen, then their cost can be estimated with reasonable accuracy. Early entry of economic and process factors gives the false appearance of reserve status to the resource estimation. It would be more informative and less subject to abuse and misunderstanding if resource calculations were made at a number of cutoff grades. The cutoff grades should be chosen to cover the range of grades found in practice in existing operations of similar type. This would emphasize the open nature of resource estimates and encourage creative evaluation of mining and process technologies. It does not preclude the use of economic, environmental and recovery technology factors in deciding the advisability of continuing exploration expenditures, but would highlight their speculative nature. It is thus hoped that decisions on the future of the deposit would not be made on the presumed suitability of a given technology but on the actually known reality. I agree that resource estimates should be reported as a range of cutoff grades. Since reporting at a cutoff implies application of underlying economics (even by analogy to similar properties), however, it should be clearly stated that resources do not consider economic, mining or cost factors, and that ore reserves will be substantially less. The dilemma of the explorationist is that until the continuity and limits of ore-grade mineralization have been established, it is difficult to make quantitative estimates of either resources or ore reserves. Further industry discussion is needed regarding standards for disclosing early exploration information in such a way as to fairly represent the potential of an exploration property.

INTRODUCTION The attempt to interprete lung cancer incidence caused by inhaled radon decay products in items of radiation dose raises the question of the relevant dose. The various dosimetric approaches published by now are characterized by an increasing complexity in the structure of the models used. Ranging from organ doses to microdosimetric specific energy distributions in the cells at risk, a significant trend from the macroscopic to the microscopic scale can be observed. Since tumors originate preferentially in the basal cells of the lobar and segmental bronchial epithelium, these cells are regarded as the critical target for inhalation carcinogenesis. The evaluation of basal cell doses is, therefore, the main objective of lung dose assessments. Various dosimetric models have been published in the past (Altshuler, Nelson and Kuschner, 1964; Haque and Collinson, 1967; Harley and Pasternack, 1972; Hofmann, Steinhäusler and Pohl, 1979, 1980; Jacobi, 1964; Jacobi and Eisfeld, 1980; James , Greenhalge and Birchall, 1980). Due to incertainties of physical and biological parameters involved and the application of different anatomical and physiological models the claculated doses are varying up to one order of mangitude. Independent of the choice of these dosimetric models applied to the calculation of lung doses, deposition, clearance and resulting dose are affected essentially by the properties of the inhaled aerosol as well as by personal characteristics. Both the properties of the exposed individual as well as of the inhaled environmental atmosphere have to be considered in radiation protection. It is the main objective of this paper to illustrate the influence of both parameter sets on basal cell doses by varying the above parameters. PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS Though it might be more convenient for radiation protection calculations, the biological "man" cannot be represented by a uniform standard man. In Tab. 1 these personal characteristics which cause the variability of man are listed together with the region of their effectiveness. In the following the influence of these parameters will be discussed with regard to lung dose assessments. Besides these factors the great biological variability of all anatomical and physiological parameters involved as well as pathological alterations due to lung diseases cause additional variations in lung dosimetry. [ ] Age Age can be considered as the most important personal factor influencing the anatomical structure of the lung between birth and about 15 years of life. This period is characterized not only by an enlargement of already existing respiratory units but also by structural changes. Besides these anatomical alterations deposition is strongly dependent also on respiration parameters, such as tidal volume (TV) and respiratory frequency (RF). Whereas RF decreases with progressing age in an exponential manner, TV increases significantly resulting finally in a growth of the respiratory minute volume (RMV). Also mucus clearance in the infant might be more effective than in the adult, though no reliable experimental data are available. Superposing all these age-dependent changes mean basal cell doses are higher for children by about a factor of 2 than for adults living in the same radioactive environment (Hofmann, 1981). In the adult the following alterations of respiration standards with age are reported: total lung capacity diminishes with age, functional residual capacity is unchanged or increases with age and the dead space rises slightly with age (ICRP, 1975). The influence of these lung capacities on deposition, however, can be regarded as insignificant. Due to the ageing process mucus velocities my be considerably smaller in older people. This effect can also be superposed by the simultaneous influence of ciliatoxic effects of cigarette smoke and air pollutants or other bronchial diseases. Since the lower age limit for occupational exposure is about 18 years, age can be disregarded in the uranium mining industry for the determination of radiation doses, though lung cancer induction is significantly dependent on age.

INTRODUCTION Uranium mine inspection in Canada forms one element of the enforcement of the Atomic Energy Control Act; it is under this Act that all Canadian uranium mines and mills are licensed to operate. Inspection duties are carried out by a small core staff of federal government inspectors (working for the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB)) largely supplemented by provincial mine inspectors working on behalf of the AECB. Unlike most resource extraction in Canada, uranium mining is under federal jurisdiction and consequently it was the AECB who decided in 1975 that changes in the Canadian uranium mining industry, particularly its expansion and the expanding role of the mine inspector in the limiting of exposures, warranted the offering of a special radiation protection training course. The Uranium Mine Inspector Training Course (UMITC) was first conducted in 1976 at the Elliot Lake Centre in Elliot Lake, Ontario. Subscription for the course was not limited to mine inspectors to enable union stewards, management personnel and provincial/federal labour inspectors to attend. This paper will present an outline of the course content, the format of its presentation and non-curriculum aspects of running a course of this type in uranium-producing community. The core lecturers for UMITC are drawn from the Radiation Protection and Uranium Mine Divisions of the AECB. In addition, guest lecturers are invited from universities and medical research centres together with industry professionals and government researchers. In all some twenty-four plus presentations are made over the first five days of lectures. The program topic areas, hazards, controls, measurements, record-keeping and health effects are preceded by an intensive half-day session on radiation fundamentals. TOPICS Hazards [Dust] A review of the dynamics of airborne particles including the effects of particle size, gravity and wake-turbulence on the behaviour of dust clouds. Associated topics are migrational aspects of dust particles and specific dust-generating mine operations. [Radiation] Canadian uranium mines are increasingly diverse in nature ranging from large scale low-grade underground operations in Elliot Lake to smaller high-grade open pits in Saskatchewan. Papers are presented on assessments of internal and external exposure, the metabolic pathways of ingested or inhaled radiation and the specifics of mine and mill hazards. Radiation hazards are further broken down into gamma surveys of uranium mines, radon daughter concentrations and problem areas. Controls The relationship between mining methods and the operating environment is critically important to ensuring safe working conditions. This refers to both the selection of machinery/devices, etc., and to engineering controls which are instituted to remedy problems created by new technology. UMITC examines a number of possible mining techniques, their criteria for selection and impact on the working environment. Control measures, ventilation practices and design, the need for continuous water misting and special open-pit precautions are presented. These lectures frequently conclude with suggestions for better operating guidelines for mine ventilation systems and the need for greater co-operation between the ventilation department and the underground crews. Measurements Uranium mining regulations stress the need for a high standard of exposure monitoring, statistical planning and record-keeping. [Statistics] Although many course participants are well versed in statistics, certain fundamentals are repeated and include, the concepts of mean, variance, standard deviation and standard deviation of the mean. Confidence levels, decision-making based on sample statistics and statistical records are also discussed. [Dust Measurement] Dust measurement is particularly critical in the mines where the high silica content of the ore body, such as those at Elliot Lake, results in the continuous generation of dust. Sampling practices, filtration, impaction, thermal impaction and electrostatic precipitation are explained together with the methods of counting samples to determine free silica. Konimetric and gravimetric techniques for dust sampling are compared and contrasted. [Radiation Measurements] Both collective and personal dosimetry systems are used in the Canadian uranium mining industry and lectures are presented on each. Techniques and possible sources of error are discussed for a variety of radon and radon daughter measurement methods - Lucas method, Tsivoglou and modified Tsivoglou, Kusnetz, Rolle. Instant working level meters and personal alpha dosimeters are explained in terms of calibration, maintenance, readout and estimation of accuracy. A lecture outlining dose estimation by means of bio-assay, whole-body counting and the use of TLD's concludes the topic. Record-Keeping An overview of the problems of changing limits,
