Quarry operators must continue to change and adapt environmental compliance methods to meet the increasingly demanding regulations. To fulfill industry needs, a computer-based decision support system is being developed to facilitate decision making that mine operators are required to make regarding environmental responsibilities. This system can help to determine permitting and compliance measures needed for air, surface water, groundwater, noise, aesthetics, vegetation, wetlands, hazardous wastes, storage tanks and wildlife habitats during the development, operation, and closure phases of mining. Operators will utilize the system's user-friendly interface consisting of mouse driven responses and limited keyboard entries on a desktop computer. The system is easy to upgrade according to the user's needs and changes in current laws and regulations. Data input models, user interfaces, and support of decision making are explained. The program permits inclusion of the decision maker's own insights through "what-if' analysis, in which the user can change ad hoc entries and check the related consequences. Using this approach, the user has complete control over all steps of the decision making process. A storm water example is selected to demonstrate the potential benefits of the support system to environmental decision makers.

A significant wollastonite resource has been discovered and evaluated near Seeley's Bay in southeastern Ontario. The deposit occurs in Grenville Frontenac Terrane granulite facies rock within a calc-silicate skarn in contact with Proterozoic-age gabbro. The steeply-dipping and tightly-folded wollastonite skarn beds are interlayered with diopside and quartz-feldspar skarns in a southwest-plunging synclinorium. More than 9 million tonnes of a drill-proven and inferred resource grading 41 % wollastonite has been identified, as well as an additional 3 million tonnes grading 30%. Mineralogical and process test work with the wollastonite from this deposit has demonstrated the potential to produce a high purity, high aspect ratio wollastonite product.

INTRODUCTION As the world's supply of near-surface metalliferous ore bodies is depleted, more emphasis must be placed upon mechanized bulk systems of underground mining. In particular, block caving is becoming increasingly important as a method of mining low to moderate grade deposits at depths of somewhat less than 1219 m (4000 ft). 00 ft). The block caving method requires that the ore body be completely undercut, thereby removing its means of support and inducing failure which progresses from the undercut to the ground surface. As the span of the under- cut increases and the weight of the overlying crushed ore body becomes greater, large stresses are induced on slusher and haulage drifts. Stability of these drifts is critical in block caving operations and often proves to be an extremely difficult task (Kendorski, 1976; McWilliams, 1975). Slusher drift maintenance can be costly, often exceeding that of the original support costs. This chapter analyzes the ground support problems of an Arizona block caving mine. The mine presently uses monolithic concrete liners as a support method. Failure of the liners occurs as the undercut approaches, thus initiating a maintenance problem which will continue until the ore body is depleted in that block or panel. To examine this problem, a simple analysis of the stresses induced by the advancing undercut was per- formed. Utilizing a design method developed by Dixon ( 1973, 1974), the calculated stresses were used to deter- mine the minimum thickness required for varying section shapes of unreinforced concrete liners. It is found that the thicknesses required for stable linings are not economic. Recently developed empirical methods of support de- sign are utilized (Barton, 1974; Bieniawski, 1973) and compared to the analytical method. A final discussion of alternative methods of support is given with recommendations for the use of passive or "yielding" support methods. LAKESHORE MINE (GENERAL GEOLOGY) The Lakeshore copper property is located in Pinal County, AZ, approximately 45 km (28 miles) south of Casa Grande. The Lakeshore deposit is a porphyry cop- per similar to others in Arizona. The ore body consists of disseminated chalcopyrite and fracture fillings in quartz monzonite porphyry (QMP), Cretaceous volcanic (KVS), Precambrian diabase, and Mescal limestone. The ore body has been divided into three distinct zones of mineralization which have been termed (South, 1972) the oxide zone, the sulfide zone, and the tactite zone. The oxide zone occurs in the upper portions of the ore body and consists primarily of leached and oxidized quartz monzonite porphyry and Cretaceous sedimentary and volcanic rocks. The sulfide zone underlies the oxide zone and includes all quartz monzonite porphyry and Cretaceous rocks which have not been oxidized. The thickness of the sulfide zone is variable and ranges from about 61 to 122 m (200 to 400 ft). The tactite zone occurs in a series of Paleozoic metasediments consisting of tactite, quartzite, diabase, hornfels, and dikes of quartz monzonite porphyry. The tactite zone is highly variable in thickness and underlies the Cretaceous volcanic and sediments throughout the mine. Together, the tactite and sulfide zones are known as the thick or tall sulfides. The greatest support stability problems occur in mining of the tactite zone and are therefore the subject of the remainder of this chapter. This chapter deals with the use of industrial minerals in insulating materials used to control our thermal and acoustical environment. There are numerous products on the market used for thermal and acoustical insulation; they consume substantial quantities of a variety of industrial minerals. Following is a brief review of the theory and function of insulating materials. Acoustics is the science of sound, and architectural acoustics deals with sound in buildings. If this definition is broadened to include transportation vehicles, it is this end use for which acoustical insulations are primarily manufactured. Sound is defined as the auditory sensation in the ear, or the disturbance in a medium which causes this sensation. Acoustical insulation is used to reduce or eliminate noise, defined as unwanted sound. Noise control may be accomplished by the reduction of sound radiation at the source, by utilizing sound reducing construction methods such as staggered studs, etc., to control sound transmission, or by using sound absorbing material on walls, ceilings, and floors (Rossing, 1985). Acoustical insulation functions by absorbing the energy in sound waves in a porous material. As the sound waves penetrate the pores, they are dissipated by reducing the amplitude of vibration of the air molecules by contact with the pore walls, with subsequent conversion of the sound energy to heat energy. Acoustical insulation is generally highly porous, 1.3 cm or greater in thickness, and has interconnected pores. Acoustical insulating materials include fibrous vegetable or mineral matter and cellular organic and inorganic material, such as natural or manufactured foams (Sabine and Moulder, 1979). Acoustical materials are most commonly porous boards and tiles, which are often composite materials with perforated facing. Roof insulation board and lightweight concrete can also contribute to the absorption of noise. Thermal insulation is defined as material used to control the flow of heat. It may be used for heat control from low cryogenic temperatures (below -100°C) to in excess of 2 200°C for applications such as ablative shields for spacecraft. Heat transfer occurs by conduction, convection, or radiation. Conduction is the transfer of heat without the movement of the conducting medium, as through a metal. Heat convection through a liquid or gas takes place by movement of the medium. Forced convection is the basis for heating and cooling equipment, utilizing pumps or blowers to transfer the thermally conditioned fluid. Free or natural convection occurs due to density differences in the fluid. Radiation is the transfer of energy in space (Eckert, 1985). Conduction of heat through a solid is reduced by insulating the body with foams, or fibrous or small celled granular material. Heat transfer through a gas (convection) is controlled by creating many small pores which inhibit the movement of the fluid, substituting a gas of low thermal conductivity, or evacuating the space. Heat radiation can be reduced by the use of materials that reflect or absorb the energy (Glaser, 1967). Thermal insulating materials may be vegetable or mineral fibers, organic or inorganic particles, or foams with small pores, generally used to form a low density thermal barrier. They may be blocks, poured lightweight cementitious materials, bricks, etc.

INTRODUCTION In looking over the diversity of the papers that are being presented during this meeting on The Industrial Practice of Fine Coal Processing one cannot help but be impressed with the progress the industry has made in beneficiating fine raw coals, and in the number of innovations that are under study to increase recovery and to improve the quality of the finest size particles produced at a preparation plant. Those who are not in our industry, who look at the technical program, might be confused, when they see that the papers include such topics as cleaning to zero and heavy media cyclone cleaning 28M x 100M; application and performance of fine coal jigs, tables, hydrocyclones, spirals, and flotation; filtration, dewatering and thermal drying; and ancilliary aspects such as fines handling, instrumentation and process control plus screening and liberation. This is an observation and not a criticism of the diversity of papers being presented. The program fits within the parameters of fine coal preparation as the term "coal preparation" is defined, but perhaps not as the term "fine coal" is defined. Admittedly these definitions are sometimes loose. However, each should be made more definitive if a meaningful fine coal preparation overview is to be possible. COAL PREPARATION DEFINED In the opinion of the writer, the term "coal preparation" should be defined as including all work activities that are performed on all components of a run-of-mine coal from the time it leaves a surface reserve or an underground portal, until all components are either ready for shipment or are stowed on, or in the earth in an environmentally acceptable manner. This definition excludes the work that is performed to improve coal quality or handleability inside the mine or pit. This work is commonly called "face" or "pit" preparation. FINE COAL DEFINED The term "fine coal" means different things to different people. In the past, anthracite finer than No. 3 Buckwheat (3/16 in.) was considered fines which often were discarded from the breaker as an unsalable by product; and bituminous coals finer that about 1/4 in. (slack) were either discarded or sold at cost to prevent an accumulation of "no bills" which referred to a product having no immediate sale. Although a standard definition of "fine coal" is yet to be accepted by the industry, a designation of coals by particle-size range has evolved through the wide use of three-circuit flowsheets, wherein the optimum size range by washer type determines the size fractions: a coarse-coal circuit for the plus 3/8 in., a -11- coal circuit for the 3/8 in. x 28 Mesh, and a fine-coal circuit for the remaining 28 Mesh x 0. Logically, the term "fine coal" should refer to some resultant size fraction or some top size by zero. This definition should include a 28 Mesh x 0 feed to a flotation cell but should exclude a 28 x 100 Mesh size fraction fed to a heavy media cyclone. Failure to include the resultant sizes in the definition precludes accounting of the full range of particle sizes present in the feed to the plant. Since the 28 Mesh x 0 fraction is treated in the final circuit of the three discreet washing circuits, now almost always used in U.S. commercial applications, and since it contains all of its resultant sizes, in the writer's opinion, it should be designated "fine coal". FINE COAL CLEANING Cleaning coal fines, which in the past was at best marginally profitable, is now an essential part of coal preparation strategy for a number of reasons : 1. In the field of minerals processing the concentration of valuable minerals normally takes place in suspensions of ore particles in liquids. The fluid resistance offered by Newtonian liquids to the movement of free settling spheres for the limiting cases of creep flow and turbulent flow is well described by Stokes' and Newton's Laws. However, these equations are not applicable to non-Newtonian fluids, since the relationship between applied shearing stress and resulting rate of shear is a non-linear function, and more than one viscosity parameter is necessary to describe their rheological properties. For this reason, the term "apparent viscosity," which has been commonly used to explain the flow resistance of the non-Newtonian systems including suspensions, may be misleading. A rigorous analysis of the mechanisms of momentum transport of solid-liquid systems is complex indeed. There are many variables that affect the properties of such systems, and precise limitations and assumptions are necessary in order to produce quantitative relationships for predicting their behavior. Very dilute suspensions of spherical particles in Newtonian liquids of identical density as the solids have been examined in the past (12); however, the study of suspensions in which there is a considerable difference in density, between the liquid and the suspended solids has been neglected.

"Climax Molybdenum Company’s Henderson Mine, owned by Freeport McMoRan Inc., is a panel caving molybdenum mine located 69 km west of Denver, Colorado. The mine utilizes long interconnected ore passes as part of the ore flow system. Knowing the approximate level of ore in these ore passes is beneficial for preventing increased dust concentrations in various production areas, as well as scheduling truck loading operations. Level monitoring has been achieved by using a strain gauge placed on the steel structure of the truck chute, an amplifier and a Programmable Logic Controller. This paper explains the concepts and limitations associated with using strain gauges for ore pass monitoring as well as applying proactive dust prevention and level monitoring interfaces. INTRODUCTION The Henderson Mine, located 69 km west of Denver, Colorado, is an underground molybdenum mine which uses a panel caving process to produce 18,000 tonnes per day currently. This process involves dumping ore down a series of interconnected ore passes leading to truck chutes. Trucks use these chutes to load ore and deliver this ore to an underground crusher. If ore is pulled below the lowest intercept of these ore passes, a ventilation pressure imbalance occurs which generates a large amount of dust on the levels where ore is being loaded into the tops of the ore pass. When a dust event occurs, work must be stopped until the dust settles. Once the dust settles the ore passes must be filled significantly before trucks can start pulling from the corresponding chute. This downtime and unplanned work due to dust can be avoided if the approximate ore pass levels are known. Strain gauges have been installed and tested on a truck chute at the Henderson Mine and the results of these tests have led to a series of concepts in using strain gauges to monitor ore pass levels. This paper explores these concepts and corresponding limitations and explains how the application of ore pass monitoring can be achieved with the use of strain gauges. Ore Pass and Ventilation Pressure Imbalance Overview At the Henderson Mine, there are typically two or four ore passes in different drifts that combine into one bin to create an ore pass complex as shown in Figure 1. When the level of ore is at or below the 7210 intercept (I82W), four drifts have a ventilation connection to each other and the 7655 exhaust level. A “piston effect” is created each time a bucket of muck is dumped down the ore pass. Figure 2 illustrates this phenomenon: as the loader in 621 dumps a bucket down the ore pass, the muck pushes the air in the ore pass down the 82A leg and back up the 82B leg which generates a large amount of dust. The bin regulators on 7655 cannot be opened enough to allow for this surge of air to be relieved onto the exhaust level and the dust ends up exhausting into the 625 and 627 drifts."

In underground metal/nonmetal mines, repeated localized short-term exposure to high levels of airborne contaminants can become a serious health issue. Currently, there are no common mechanisms to control or mitigate these short-term high exposures to contaminants. To improve miners’ health and safety, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) is developing a smart monitoring and control (SMAC) system for the real-time monitoring of mine air quality, with integrated countermeasures to reduce high concentrations of airborne contaminants in localized sections of mines. To develop and test a SMAC system capable of being implemented in an underground mine, SMRD researchers built a test apparatus incorporating a fan, louver, ducting and sensors combined with atmospheric monitoring and control software. This system will institute effective countermeasures to reduce contaminant levels, improving miner safety and health.

"As a new method to support gate roadways, rock bolting has been widely used in the big coal enterprises for its superiority. The disturbed stress field of surrounding rock and anchor pre-stress field were divided into 3 areas in consideration of s1, s3. The surrounding rock failure form and characteristic were analyzed in combination with parameter f, the failure mechanism was explained using the slip line theory, furthermore, the rock bolting mechanism and its arrangement were studied. After roadway excavation, the tensile stress area appeared at the surface of the surrounding rock. The failure type changes from shallow tension-shear form into deep compression-shear form and the failure shape is an “incense burner”, surrounding by high risk failure area in butterfly shape. The maximum principle stress in roof appears discontinuous distribution because of layers separation. The failure type of surrounding rock is intensity-stress environment-weak plane control model. The internal reason of roadway macroscopic failure is the displacement between the surface plastic area and the deep elastic region along the tangential direction of slip line. In condition of rock bolt support, there is one-way tensile stress area in small range at the surface of surrounding rock, inside is the bidirectional compressive zone in uniform distribution form, stress environment is improved by the superposition of anchor pre-stress and disturbed stress field, anchor rock bolt arrangement and pre-tightening force distribution is decided according to the distribution of f parameter. Finally, supporting method and parameter reasonability was proved by the roadway deformation monitoring, damage depth drilling peep test in the 8101 transportation roadway in a mine.Introduction The stability of roadway support is very important to the safety and sustainable development of coal mine. In recent years, the focus of China's coal mining industry began to move to West China, the thick-extra thick coal seam is developed in the West. The latest technology and equipment have been put in to service, the occurrence condition of thick coal seam and the increasing of productivity lead to the cross section of the roadway increasing continually, hence, it is more difficult to control the surrounding rock. At present, the most common way to support the roadway is rock bolt (cable) support (Wang 2007); Scholars have been deeply studied on the mechanism of rock bolt. It is reported (Wang et al 2012, Gao 2007, Zhang and Yuan 2006) that the influence of rock bolt on physical and mechanical parameters of coal and rock mass in the anchorage zone, It is believed that the rock bolt can improve the peak strength of surrounding rock, especially the post peak strength, and the failure mode of rock mass under the rock bolt support is analyzed. It is reported (Wang et al 2014, Xiao et al 2013, Li et al 2007, Yan et al 2012), according to different geological conditions, the failure mechanism of surrounding rock and supporting technology of the whole coal roadway were studied. Focus on the failure mechanism of roadway surrounding rock, different forms of high strength support methods were proposed, which achieved good results. It is reported (Wang et al 2012a, Zhang et al 2011, Wang et al 2012b, Kang et al 2010, Zhang et al 2010, Kang et al 2007) that the supporting mechanism of pre-stressed anchor was analyzed from the point of the distribution of the maximum principal stress in the pre-stressed anchor field, and the influence of the rock bolt support parameters and surrounding rock characteristics on the supporting effects were studied. Based on the latest research results, this paper analyzed the failure mechanism of surrounding rock of coal roadway, proposed the high strength anchor net cable combined supporting technology based on the feature of stress zoning distribution of surrounding rock, to provide reference for the coal roadway rock bolt (cable) support technology."

In the process of mining coal today, our greatest asset, the coal miner, is faced with the indirect and direct consequence of underground mining operations. The indirect considerations may be the rank of the coal seam, the amount of overburden, geological factors, seam permeability and cracks. The introduction of newer, bigger and faster coal-producing face equipment having the capability to cut or rip through the bedding planes, cleats and micropores of the coal seam brings about rapid liberation of gas accompanied by greater concentrations of coal dust, has exerted a direct consideration and greater demand upon mine ventilation systems and dust control. The purpose of mine ventilation is to provide sufficient pure air to the miners working underground and to dilute, render harmless, and carry away all the dangerous and noxious gases. The mining operations which create coal dust are cod cutting, drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, dumping and movement of face equipment. The created fine dust causes the propagation of explosions. When quantities of coal dust with no methane present are raked in a sufficiently dense cloud in the presence of a source of ignition, an explosion is possible.

The Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Ltd., generates a jarosite waste at its Risdon smelter. Since 1974 this waste has been disposed of at sea off south-east Tasmania. As part of a monitoring programme prescribed by the Australian Government, bottom sediments from the disposal zone are monitored regularly. QEM*SEM image analysis complements conventional chemical analysis, having the ability to partition the occurrence of an element between sediment particles of metallurgical and natural origin. The adaptation of QEM*SEM techniques to the evaluation of bottom sediments provides insight into the fate of the particles of jarosite waste.

I appreciate this opportunity to discuss with you OPIC's new policies designed to assist U.S. minerals companies in developing new sources of minerals overseas. A comparison of recent figures on U.S. investment in mineral exploration, development and production gives results which are remarkable --and disturbing. Through the 1960's the flow of U.S. foreign direct investment in mining and smelting in the developed and less developed countries were nearly equal. However, by 1973, roughly 80% of all exploration expenditures by mining companies was taking place in the developed countries and principally in the U.S., Canada and Australia. Clearly it is to the interests of both the developing countries and the United States to put these figures back in better balance. As you may be aware, the administration as a whole is examining systematically what can be done by government to reduce the disincentives and increase the incentives to mineral investment in the less developed countries --the LDCs. A subgroup of the National Advisory Council chaired by the Treasury Department has been formed to coordinate U. S. Government policy and program efforts relating to mineral and energy development in these countries. Among other matters, this subgroup will examine how public policies could positively influence the private investment decision-making process in the minerals industry.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is adding a third fan to operate in parallel with, and supplement, its two existing main fans. An engineering analysis conducted in 1995 identified the need for improved system availability and efficiency. The WIPP, located near Carlsbad, New Mexico, is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Carlsbad Area Office facility designed to permanently dispose of U.S. defense-generated transuranic waste in a deep bedded salt deposit. Engineers at the WIPP performed a feasibility analysis for either modi tying, supplementing, or replacing its two main mine fans. Since the centrifugal fans were installed in 1988, multiple operational and performance concerns have been identified. A comprehensive engineering study was conducted (McDaniel, et al., 1997) to: identity and quantity operational concerns, evaluate possible alternatives, and recommend an optimum solution. The study indicated that adding a third single-duty centrifugal fan similar to the two existing fans, and equipping that fan with Inlet Van Controls (IVCs) was the best choice. This alternative provided the most desirable combination of operational readiness, and improving system performance. The fan installation project accommodates several operational and scheduling constraints. WIPP is scheduled to receive waste in May 1998. This milestone is proceeded by an operational readiness review. Fan installation could not be allowed to compromise the WIPP's ability to declare facility readiness and had to minimize operational disruptions during the system tie-in. All engineering for the project is completed and physical modifications started in July 1997. The project was completed in 1998.

Seismic repeaters are commonly observed in natural fault zones dominated by slow aseismic motion. The corresponding seismic signal, characterized by highly similar wave forms, is usually interpreted as the repeating ruptures of locked asperities on fault planes (“patches of higher roughness”), loaded by a-seismically slipping areas (“creeping areas”) (Chen & Lapusta 2009; Bourouis & Bernard 2007). Only very few occurrences of seismic repeaters have been reported in underground mines, where these phenomena are rather unexpected since the stress state and the seismic wave propagation continuously evolve with the advancing excavation front (Kinscher et al., 2020). A recent study based on a local seismic network installed in the underground mine of Garpenberg, Sweden, has shown that seismic repeaters and multiplets represent the main part of the total released seismic energy (magnitude of seismic events: -2 < M <1, on moment magnitude scale), with some seismic families being active during several months to years. It is suggested that repeaters are linked to aseismic slip on pre-existing talc-filled fractures, induced by the excavation, and loading of asperities. These results imply that part of redistribution of stresses in the mine is due to aseismic slip, which might explain the observed distant and delayed seismicity.

In 1970 U. S. Steel acquired the physical assets of mine, mine property, and preparation plant of the Crystal Block Coal Company near Thacker, Mingo County, West Virginia. The facility, identified as U. S. Steel Mine No. 20, is administered and operated as a production unit of U. S. Steel Gary District, Gary, West Virginia. Mining operations of the No. 20 mine are conducted in the high-volatile Alma seam. The preparation plant, which originally had a capacity of about 150 tons per hour (tph) of raw-coal feed, had process circuitry consisting of a Daniels heavy-media vessel for cleaning the plus-1/4-inch raw coal, a McNally-Pittsburg feldspar jig for cleaning the 1/4 inch by 28 mesh, and Daniels flotation cells for treating the 28 mesh by 0. No water-classification system existed. Refuse tailings from the plant were pumped to several surface lagoons which were decanted to the stream. The settled solids were removed and trucked to the coarse-refuse disposal area. Water make-up requirements were supplied by a small mine-water surface reservoir and augmented with stream water. Gasification of carbonaceous energy carriers with simultaneousCO2 removal is a new and interesting alternative e.g. ZECA [1],HyPr-Ring [2], AER [3]. In the ZECA process lime supported Hydrogen generation from Methane is a basic process unit and the Hypr-RING process investigates Hydrogen generation from hard coal with addition of lime. Here the main objective is a further development of the AER process. High energetic efficiencies for gasification in the range of 90 % can be achieved if the humidity of the energy carrier is already sufficient for steam reforming reaction. The aim of the overall process is upgrading coals and biomass yielding into three valuable products: • A fuel gas ready for power generation • A CO2gas stream containing >95%, ready for transportation to disposal or chemical fixation • A pre-calcined feed for cement clinkering consisting ofCaO and coal ash Thus power generation and gasification are independent. A promising industrial application is the combination of gasification and cement production. Then only one additional reactor is required and the precalcination mass flows have to be increased.

Crystals of one or more kinds of mineral or rock fragments." That sounded better, but I still read on. "3. Any of several hard inert materials used for mixing with a cementing material to form concrete or mortar." That sounded even better, but it should be a little broader. So I would like to define "aggregates" for you as follows: "Hard, inert fragments of rock or minerals used alone or with cementing agents to form products essential to nearly all types of construction." Usually aggregates are sand, gravel, or crushed stone, but other minerals such as clay or shale can be heated and become aggregates. What are some of the construction uses? Well, we&apos;ve already mentioned concrete, as used in streets and highways, sidewalks and parking lots, airports and all kinds of building construction, not to mention bridges and swimming pools, and docks and breakwaters, just to list some of the uses. Our way of life couldn&apos;t exist without concrete. And you can&apos;t have concrete without aggregates,

The motion of grinding balls has been the subject of study since 191 9 when Davis published the first treatise on this subject. Subsequently came the notion that knowing mill power draft, using Bond equation or others, is sufficient to do an analysis of grinding. Next, population balance models provided accurate scale-up from small laboratory size mills to very large plant size mills. However, this success was not repeated when dealing with semiautogenous grinding mill. The study of charge motion with the discrete element method provides support and answers to such issues. Besides providing an accurate picture of charge motion in large mills, the method begs the investigator to study grate and pulp lifter equally critically with fluid dynamic principles. Hence, in recent years, the field of comminution in grinding mills is advancing on a firm footing.

To offset the waste management costs, industry has made conscious effort to recover usable resources from the waste streams. This paper reviews the technical developments and current practices in processing of waste materials. Methods for recovering metallic, non-metallic and organic species from solid wastes and effluents generated by operating plants are discussed.

The velocity of detonation (VOD) is a significant property considered when rating an explosive. It may be quantified as a confined or unconfined velocity. The confined velocity is the rate at which the detonation wave propagates through an explosive within a blast hole or any restrained space. The unconfined velocity emanates when an explosive is detonated in the open. However, the confined velocity is more significant as explosives are usually employed under a definite degree of confinement. This paper evaluates the increment of air deck volume and its effect on the VOD. The air gap (air deck) volume is increased stepwise from 10 to 30% of the total blast hole volume by reducing the stemming height in the collar zone. Thereafter, the VOD estimation in the 172-mm-diameter explosive column is conducted using the Dáutriche technique. It is observed that the VOD reduced with the increasing air deck volume and detonation failure is high when 30% of the blast hole volume is replaced with air deck. It is deduced that the increment of the air deck volume has an effect on the attenuation of the steady-state VOD.
