The Endeavour Colliery is operated by Powercoal Pty Ltd. It is located in the Central Coast of New South Wales, Australia. The mine has been in operation for about 30 years, producing around 600,000 tons of export coal annually from two production sections. On June 28. 1995, an explosion occurred underground in the 300 Panel at approximately 9:50 a.m.. There were thirty miners underground at the time of the explosion, all of whom were safely evacuated. From June 29 through July 10, personnel did not enter the mine. However, gas samples of the mine atmosphere were obtained from underground monitoring stations and analyzed. Samples were also obtained from boreholes that were drilled from an adjacent mine. On July 10, the atmosphere at the underground monitoring locations and at the boreholes appeared stable with minimal risk of combustion occurring underground. Plans were developed to begin the recovery of the underground workings. The recovery of the underground workings was completed on July 13. The underground investigation of the explosion began on July 14. The investigation was conducted by the New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources. Technical assistance was pro- vided by the United States Department of Labor's Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).

It is fundamentally important to evaluate bauxites in a realistic, commercial way on the basis of the processing technology both for the supply of existing alumina plants and for the designing of new ones. The evaluation system developped by ALUTERV-FKI consists of chemical, mineralogical, texture and technological testing. The commercial value of bauxites is basically determined by their available alumina content and the caustic soda consumption required for their processing. However, their contaminants have to be taken into consideration, too. The commercial value of bauxites also depends on the processing technology and their possibly unfavourable chemical and mineralogical composition can be /at least partially/ compensated by R&D efforts. The selection of the optimum processing technology and the effects of further developing the same are demonstrated on monohydrate bauxites containing goethite and carbonates. Some of the technological solutions /desilication or deironing of bauxites, hydrothermal treatment of the digestion residue / make at the same time possible the complex processing of the bauxites, the profitable utilization of their main components.

Optimization has been defined as the procedure of locating the best of something or the best way of doing something (Mular, 1971). Several texts (Himmelblau, 1972; Ray and Szekeley, 1973; Box and Draper, 1969; and Lee, Adams, and Gaines, 1968) on the subject are available. Such techniques have been placed in two categories, namely, off-line optimization and on-line optimization. For the former, an optimization model is employed; for the latter, a black box approach is involved. The essence of an optimization problem becomes obvious, when a response surface is considered. Suppose that a response (in this case, a criterion of improvement such as profit per day; grade of concentrate per day) denoted by Y, depends only on two variables, X1 and X2, which can be manipulated and controlled. The relationship between Y, X1 and X2 may be represented graphically as shown in Fig. 1. The diagram is called a response surface and its height, Y, is determined by X1 and X2. Points associated with equal responses constitute response contours. The shape is that of a hill, and optimization is the procedure of ascending the hill to reach the top (maximum). In practice, a response surface is subject to disturbances which distort its shape and shift its location from time to time, so that the exact location of a maximum is imprecise. Generally, constraints (restrictions of some sort) on responses and manipulable variables serve to define a region of permissible operation.

Underclays and shales are two natural resources associated with the coal measures. Underclays are widely used as the raw material for refractory, semi-refractory, and face bricks. Shales are useful for sewer pipe and lightweight aggregate. This study concentrates on the geologic controls over the properties of shales for use in the manufacture of lightweight aggregate, and the geologic controls over the properties of underclays for use in the manufacture of bloating ladle refractories. The industrial processes are similar in that both involve the trapping of a gas phase to cause bloating. They differ in that the bloating of lightweight aggregate occurs at lower temperatures (1000-1200°C) than ladle bricks (1350°-1470°C). Lightweight aggregate bloats during an initial rapid firing. Ladle bricks are manufactured by slow firing at 1100°C for up to 80 hours. Bloating occurs when these bricks are reheated to 1350°C . Bloating shales are those which expand twice or more times their original volume during fairly rapid firing. Commercial bloating is usually done by rotary kiln processing or sintering; in both cases the firing rate is much faster than the experimental rate (5/8°C/minute). Bloating results from the entrapment of gasses which are evolved during firing. The material must have adequate viscosity to trap gas bubbles throughout the temperature range of bloating. The finished product contains a high percentage of closed pores with a bulk density between 35-75 pounds per cubic foot. Expanded shale finds its most important use as a substitute for heavy concrete aggregate (crushed stone, sand and gravel) where low bulk density is desired property. The extent of bloating in lightweight aggregate is a function of the mineralogy and chemistry of the shale. Figure 1 shows a corner of the three phase diagram, kaolinite-quartz-(illite and chlorite). Several areas on the diagram are outlined which contain predominantly marine shales, fresh and brackish water shales, and underclays. Each sample was rapid fired and the resulting expansion was plotted on the phase diagram.

Anyone who scans the modern literature will realize that concepts of leadership have changed during the past few years. And like change in so many areas of our culture, change has been rapid in the perception of leadership. Many traditional leadership traits are still highly regarded and many of the longstanding personal qualities that improve leadership abilities continue to be effective. In the past, though, leaders could rely on dominance, intimidation and fear to accomplish their goals through the actions of others. In contrast, effective leaders today build relationships, provide vision and guidance, and strive for communication, cooperation, trust and employee satisfaction. Earnest leadership involves moral issues like honesty, integrity, fairness, empathy and respect. Modern leaders guide, facilitate and coach, rather than command and direct. But how well equipped are managers in the mining industry to meet the leadership challenges that lie ahead? More importantly, is he or she becoming a better leader? This article outlines steps to becoming a more effective leader. Management consultants stress that the changes that lie ahead will demand swift organizational adjustments and managers who are equipped to lead during times of change (Boyett and Conn, 1991; Hesselbein et al., 1996; White et al., 1996 and Kotter, 1997). Becoming a better leader begins with self-assessment and a commitment to unify all who depend on one's leadership abilities. Simply defined, leadership is leading others. Contrary to common practice, leadership is not about advancing one's own career but about bringing out the best in others. The beauty of modern leadership, however, is that the path of serving others creates synergies. They benefit everyone, including the leader, those the leader manages, upper management and company shareholders.

A detailed strata-mechanics investigation and examination was carried out in the E2 Panel (ML-II/7) of the XVI Bottom coal seam, which is located in the Moonidih Colliery of B.C.C.L., Jharia coalfield, India. Above this panel, the XVI Top coal seam was previously worked out by a longwall panel. Based on intensive field study and on experiments in a number of longwall panels located within various Indian coal mines, the actual behavior of the coal roof strata was evaluated and new strata-mechanics concepts around the longwall panels were developed. These concepts resulted in new methodologies concerning the behavior of roof rocks, caving characteristics, etc. within longwall panels and in the area of strata mechanics. Based on these new strata-mechanics concepts, a very simple, but realistic, model was developed to determine the optimum capacity of the powered supports. This model considered the combined loads resulting from the detachment of strata and composite layer blocks from the face and, also, loads due to the deflection of strata and composite layers situated above the detached roof rockmass. This formula, along with the other related formulas by the author, prompted the determination of the optimum capacity requirement for the powered supports to be used in the XVI Bottom coal seam, located under the worked out area. This new concept in strata mechanics and capacity requirements of the powered supports in a longwall face may be an aid to Mining Engineers.

The development of a process for direct synthesis of very pure ZnO powders from zinc-bearing waste was investigated. The zinc waste which contains 55% zinc was leached with sulfuric acid. After iron removal by hydrolysis from this zinc solution, purification through solvent extraction by the use of D2EHPA as an extractant was carried out. Then, loaded zinc in the organic solution was stripped and precipitated simultaneously using oxalic acid as a precipitant. Synthesized ZnC2O4 precursors by precipitation stripping were calcined to obtain ZnO powders exceeding 99.9% purity. The effects of sulfuric acid concentration, leaching time, and pulp density on the extraction of zinc were studied and optimum conditions for the solvent extraction were obtained through purification of the zinc solution. The size, morphology, and size distribution of synthesized ZnC204 powders were studied in terms of oxalic acid concentration, temperature, surfactant added, precipitation time, etc.

Cyclones have become standard unit operations in mineral processing for both dewatering mineral slurries and for making separations at given particle sizes. Conventional cyclones are normally able to make moderately sharp cuts. However, the limited ability to control water flow out of the apex means that cyclones have difficulty handling fluctuations in feed. Underflow-regulated cyclones are cyclones with a rubber boot attached to the underflow. This boot acts as a non-return valve and restricts flow out of the apex of a cyclone. Normally, this type of restriction on a cyclone causes severe difficulties in cyclone operation. However, by adding a siphon arm to the overflow, water flow can be controlled. The siphon arm creates a vacuum that reduces or eliminates the air core, permitting better control of the ratio of water flow out of the overflow and underflow. A Linatex-developed underflow-regulated cyclone was compared to a conventional cyclone for its ability to dewater a sand slurry. The underflow-regulated cyclone produced slurries with solids contents as high as 80% in the underflow. Conventional cyclones produced lower solids content in the underflow under similar conditions.

The report on cut and cover construction as assembled by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development covered 17 different countries based on a total of just under 400 individual replies of which about 30% of the replies were from the United States. In general, the review of replies to the questionnaire led to the impression that cut and cover construction is a very inadequate method which needed many improvements. This unfavorable judgment, however, resulted in the manner in which questions were asked rather than in the method itself, It can be concluded that the cut and cover construction method has proved itself as an excellent method and that it has reached a high degree of technological perfection, but inadequacies stilt exist, and for purposes of complete evaluation, comparisons with mining tunnelling methods should be carried out. The principal problem in cut and cover construction is the interaction during construction between the construction process and the existing use of the surface and subsurface environment. The greatest impediments to cut and cover construction have little to do with the physical works being constructed, but more with creating a site in which the work can be performed. Utility relocation, traffice maintenance, and protection of existing structures are major problems for the construction contractor, and too frequently receive insufficient attention in preconstruction planning and design. Introduction My first contact with industrial milling was during the time I worked in the electricity generating industry in the United Kingdom. In visits to power stations to investigate either deposits in the boiler furnaces or polluting deposits settling around the stacks. I had to check the performance of the vertical coal pulverizers, since poor pulverization aggravated both problems. Naturally, then, when I came to the USA in 1957 to take a PhD in fuel technology at Penn State, I was put to work to review the science of coal pulverization. After this reviewing, I was completely confused. On one hand, there was a well-developed understanding of stress-strain equations, and a rap- idly developing knowledge of how stressed, brittle solids fractured, based on the Griffith crack theory. On the other hand, reading in the grinding literature gave me: • Kick's Law, which was clearly not correct in the light of modern fracture theory; • Rittinger's Law, which was also clearly not correct; • Bond's Third Law of Comminution, which was claimed to have something to do with the Griffith crack theory, but where the connection between the two was made by intuitive pseudo- scientific reasoning I could not accept; • the choice of mill motor power for the most common type of coal mill, the Raymond pulverizer, was calculated from the fan power required to move air through the mill. Although I could accept the empirical connection between the two, it made no sense from the point of view of fracture energy. Even today, most books or review chapters on size reduction start from these laws. incorrect statements abound in the literature, such as “the Hardgrove Index is based on Rittinger's Law," which it is not, "The Bond theory states that work input is proportional to new crack tip length produced in particle breakage," which is not true, etc. My own test work showed that these "laws" did not fit the data for grinding of coal. At about this time, Epstein (1 948) and Broadbent and Callcott (1 956), following the original work by R.L. Brown (1941) at the British Coal Utilization Research Association, proposed describing breakage as a series of fracture stages. I took their concepts and developed the basic differential equation for a batch grinding process continuous in time, analogous to a batch chemical reactor. Robin Gardner then joined the project and did his PhD on treating batch grinding in the same way as a batch chemical reactor. He found that the basic equation had already been partially derived by Sedlatschek and Bass (1 953) in Germany. We confirmed experimentally the validity of the equations for describing batch grinding (1 962) and formulated the equation describing steady-state continuous grinding in a fully-mixed mill. At about the time this work was published, Gaudin and Meloy (1962) and Filippov (1961) independently published essentially the same equations, but without experimental proof of the validity of the concepts. I will give a brief overview of what these beginnings had led to in the design of mills for size and power, and show some of the results of this more detailed understanding of grinding processes. Concepts of Fracture Mills such as tumbling ball, rod, pebble and autogenous mills and vertical mills such as the Raymond, and E-type apply compressive stress to lumps or particles relatively slowly. Compressive stress applied to a particle of an elastic brittle solid imparts overall strain energy to the solid and produces local regions of tensile stress, (Fig. 1) (Berenbaum and Brodie, 1959). Irwin (1949) showed from solution of the stress-strain solutions that a small hole in a region of tensile stress reduces stress concentration at the hole, that is, the tensile stress at the tip of a crack or flaw in a solid is much higher than the general tensile stress in the region. The longer the crack, the higher the stress concentration. Griffith (1920) hypothesized that when the regional tensile stress is large enough, then the chemical bonds at a preexisting crack tip are stretched to breaking point, as illustrated in Fig. 2. When the bonds break, the crack becomes longer, the tensile stress concentration increases, the situation is unstable and a crack opens up (propagates) a surface of tensile stress, creating its own tensile stress at the leading edge. Stored strain energy is converted to the kinetic energy of the moving stress field, which is analogous to sound propagation through the solid, so the crack tip accelerates to velocities approaching those of sound. The moving crack will pass through regions that were previously under regional compressive stress. "Foreword by Ren BryceSenior engineer, Freeport-McMoRan, Oro Valley, AZ, USAThe eighth annual Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) student poster contest was held in February at the national SME Annual Conference & Expo in Denver, CO. A total of 33 students presented their work at the poster competition. The competition started in January when the students submitted a one-page abstract for judging. In February, they prepared and presented a poster that explained their research. A panel of judges went to each student and listened as the students explained their research in five minutes.The students worked hard at their research and then set aside time to complete all the necessary steps to enter the competition. The MPD recognizes the effort required to enter and as a result, provides monetary rewards to all participants. The first-place winner receives $1,000; the second, $500; the third, $250; and the fourth through seventh, $200. All remaining students receive $100. All of the students also receive a complimentary ticket to the MPD Luncheon. In the southwest porphyry copper province, the virgin prospect with good copper mineralization cropping out has disappeared. Future discoveries will require an increasingly sophisticated arsenal of exploration techniques and concepts. One of the latter, stratigraphic analysis, is a technique which is often overlooked. A surprising number of exploration geologists still think of porphyry copper deposits as occurring wholly within intrusive bodies such as quartz monzonite or granodiorite. Disseminated copper mineralization, though genetically related to intrusive rocks, can occur within both the intrusive and the intruded rocks. At present, as much as 30% of the total copper produced from disseminated copper deposits in the Southwest originate from the intruded rocks rather than the intrusive. George M. Schwartz, in "Geology of the Porphyry Copper Deposits of Southwestern North America" points out that the host rocks at porphyry copper deposits include such diverse rock types as diabase, granite, limestone, dolomite, quartzite, skern, sericite schista, and others in addition to the more common monzonite, quartz-monzonite, and diorite porphyrys. Therefore, a porphyry copper can be defined as a disseminated copper deposit occurring either in or adjacent to a granitic-monzonitic-dioritic intrusive which can be exploited using bulk. mining techniques. HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT At the beginning of the 1970 more than 90% of pro¬duction drilling in open-pit mining was obtained with the use of rotary drills. At the same time, the use of rotary drills underground was virtually nonexistent. Several progressive mines began questioning whether efficient rotary drilling could not be adapted to under¬ground applications. In the late 60s and early 70s at¬tempts to use rotary drilling were made by Inco, Ltd. and Meramac Mining, utilizing drill units designed as a combination of small diameter raise drills and rotary drills. These initial attempts were unsuccessful primarily due to the immobility of the equipment and low degree of dependability. At the same time, experiments con¬ducted by Inco and Meramac using large diameter in¬the-hole percussion drills produced immediate encourag¬ing results. The first serious attempt at utilizing rotary drilling underground was made by Texasgulf in 1971 at Kidd Creek mine in Canada. An experimental stope 15 m wide, 36 m long, and 30 m deep was drilled using 200-mm diam rotary drilled holes. The machine used was a Robbins' Model 11 D. The Model 11D is a rotary drill designed to drill drain and utility holes under¬ground. The results of this test revealed that large diameter blasthole stoping was feasible. The indications were that the major areas of concern-fragmentation and pillar damage-could be controlled and a new low-cost stoping method resulted. At this point Texasgulf and Robbins entered into a cost-sharing agreement to develop a rotary drilling unit specifically for this stoping method. Drilling of the trial stope required pouring a concrete pad at each drill hole plus anchoring the derrick to the pad by means of rock¬bolts. Utilization expressed in terms of drilling time to available time was less than 20%. It was obvious that the required unit had to be mobile, setup time had to be minimized, and rod handling had to be improved. The first attempt at an underground production-type rotary drill consisted of mounting the basic 11D on an air-powered Eimco 600 Series crawler. The crawler was equipped with four screw-type leveling jacks operated by an impact wrench; rod rack facilities for 60 m of 1.2-m long, 170-mm diam rods; a rod handling facility consisting of an air-lift swing boom and a pipe loader which automatically positioned the rod under the float¬ing drive box; a turnbuckle anchor system requiring in¬stallation of four rockbolts in the drill drift floor and placing turnbuckles from the rockbolts to the corners of the drill; and trailing power units containing the electrics and hydraulics required to operate the drilling unit. Operation of this unit revealed a vast improvement in drilling time but some problem areas remained. The anchoring system required secondary drilling and proved difficult to adapt to the localized irregular floor surface and the trailing power unit was difficult to maneuver and was causing unnecessary maintenance costs. Addi¬tional improvements resulted in the standard 11MD rotary blasthole drill. DESCRIPTION OF UNIT This standard model consists of the drill and the power unit integrally mounted on an air-powered crawler chassis (Fig. 1). The rod-handling and leveling¬jack systems are similar to those used on the prototype Texasgulf unit and remained relatively the same. The anchoring system has been replaced by the roof jack, initially screw type but now hydraulically actuated. The anchoring system is necessary as the drill exerts more thrust than the weight of the unit. During operation it is found that the two front jacks adequately anchor the machine. The complete unit's operational dimensions are: height, 3.2 m; width, 2.1 m; and length, 4.2 m requiring a 3.5- x 3-m drill drift. The derrick is pivot mounted and raised and lowered by a hydraulic cylinder reducing the transport height to 2.5 m. The derrick is also turnbuckle mounted to allow dip angle drilling from vertical to 0.52 rad (30°) off vertical. The drill derrick can be mounted to allow dip axis to be parallel or perpendicu¬lar to the long axis of the unit. The standard rods are 1.2 m in length and are contained in racks of 10 which can be removed for transportation. Drilling torque is produced by a 56-kW (75-hp) electric motor driving a double vane pump which in turn drives a Robbins high torque gear-type hydraulic mo¬tor. In addition to the hydraulic motor, the machine drive system has a 3.9:1 planetary gear reducer. This results in six speeds with the following minimum and maximum range: Maximum rpm 112 Torque 3725.5 J (380 kg m) Minimum rpm 10 Torque 14 706.0 J (1500 kg m) Drilling thrust is provided by two bootstrap cylin¬ders pressurized by a variable volume pump. This sys¬tem can produce from 0 to 267 231.2 N thrust in either direction. Bailing air (approximately 17 m3/min at 382.2 to 490.3 kPa) is introduced through a rotary swivel pass¬ing directly through the center of the drive system to keep efficiency and losses to a minimum. Hole annulus is also kept to a minimum by using 170-mm rod when drilling a 200-mm hole. A small amount of water is added to the air for dust suppression. The machine has to be supplied with air, water, and electrical power. It does not appear feasible to provide an integral air power supply with the rotary drill such as is done with open-pit rotary drills. Air is required and installed during the primary development of the drill drift. The machine can be adapted to drill hole diameters from 170 to 228 mm for blasthole operations. The drill string consists of the rotary bit, crossover stabilizer, roller stabilizers, and standard rods. The operator controls speed and thrust pressure from an operating console which can be mounted in a conve¬nient position. Mount Isa has made an adaption to the operating console to permit remote collaring of drill holes in an uncleared floor.

The use of graphite in industrial applications is one of the oldest in the world. Yet, it is one of the fastest-changing technologies today. Graphite was first used centuries ago in developing writing instruments and as a raw material in crucibles used in melting metal. Today, graphite is used in some of our most demanding industries. These include aerospace, electronics and automotive applications. Graphite usage has historically been split between the natural and synthetic forms. Figure 1 shows the breakdown of natural graphites and synthetic graphites used. The usage of natural graphites and synthetic graphites is split fairly evenly, although the applications are quite different. Figure 2 shows the breakdown of applications using natural graphite. The largest application is the refractory industry. This includes refractory brick and plastics, crucibles, shrouds and other refractory parts. This main application uses roughly 50% of all natural graphite. The refractory industry is an important application for natural graphite. However, the refractory markets have been struggling for several years. As demonstrated in Fig. 3 (Semler, 1996), the production of refractories in tons per year has declined by more than 32% during the last 25 years. Refractory prices have actually risen on a dollar per ton basis during that same period as the product mix has shifted to the value-added side. Raw material and production cost increases, inflation and other related costs have kept profitability at low levels for the industry. Furnace linings that once lasted 1,000-2,000 heats now last 8,000-12,000 heats. This means that tonnage requirements have gone down and quality requirements have gone up for graphite suppliers. Therefore, new opportunities and applications must be developed if the graphite industry is to grow. Synthetics are the other major forms of graphite. There are two forms of synthetic material currently used. One is the traditional type. It is made from the turnings of graphite electrode production. The second was developed in the mid-1970s in response to a shortage of conventional synthetic graphite. This occurred by a breakthrough in thermal technology. This new technology purifies, desulfurizes and graphitizes petroleum coke on a continuous basis at temperatures of more than 2,500° C (4,532° F). This product is called desulfurized petroleum coke (Desulco). It now accounts for about half of the synthetic type material used in the United States. Figure 4 shows the breakdown in the use of synthetic types of material by application. The largest requirement is for use as a carbon addition in iron and steel. This is followed by alkaline batteries and friction materials. Current technological opportunities New opportunities for graphite products are now being developed. These new areas are made possible due to the advances in graphite thermal technology. The ability to purify and modify graphite and carbon products is the key to future growth in the graphite industry. New, higher-purity, more consistent graphite products are leading to enhanced performance in current applications. They are also opening the door to new applications.

Selecting persons who are unlikely to suffer an overexertion injury is one of three methods to reduce the risk of musculo-skeletal disorders in manual material handling. This paper describes the underlying models, methods, and techniques for such personnel selection. In particular, it describes the isoinertial LIFTEST in which persons actually lift weights to assess their capability for doing so on the job.

The knowledge concerning the lubrication of open gearing for mining machinery has contained many unknowns and at its best has relied to a great degree on a "Rule of Thumb" procedure. It will be within the scope of this paper to explain what we have learned to date and what must be learned in the future. The results in the lubrication of open gearing have spanned the spectrum of unsatisfactory to satisfactory. With the advent of larger mining machinery, we are faced with the necessity of a more thorough knowledge of open gear lubrication. We have avail- able, better steels for the gearing, advanced technology and machinery for cutting proper tooth profiles, and better means of aligning the teeth in the gear train. This has made it possible to transmit more horsepower through the same size gear set than ever before, if we have the proper lubrication to complement the factors previously mentioned. We have set up computer programs which can calculate the data fox the tooth forms, the correct operating center distances, the contact stresses, the bending stresses, and the PVT factor of the gear teeth. This program does not, at the present, have sufficient data available to calculate the type of lubricant which should be used.

The Bureau conducted, through joint funding with the Colorado Mining Association, large scale oil shale rubble fire tests to investigate flotability characteristics and different methods of extinguishment. Ignition of large rubble piles was easily accomplished. Foam blankets could be used to control surface flames. The results of these large scale tests confirmed that water was effective in extinguishing deep seated oil shale fires but not particularly efficient. It took up to 1.7 times as much water to extinguish a fire as anticipated on the basis of a simple cooling model, assuming 100 pet utilization.

Microcomputers are becoming more convenient to use at all levels of the business world, including the mining industry and mine offices. The state of the mining industry requires that we become more productive and innovative in our analysis of deposits and operations. With the help of computers, examination of options to increase productivity can be performed quickly and inexpensively. Effective use of the computer for designing underground workings combines the calculation power and speed of a computer with the technical expertise and judgment of the engineer. Computer programs can perform calculations in minutes that could take an engineer several months. The engineer must be on guard when using the computer for any calculation because it is very easy to assume the results produced by a computer program are always correct. The computer is a sophisticated calculator but cannot recognize logical errors nor transposition of numbers. Also some intuitive or obvious decisions made by an engineer are difficult or impossible to program effectively.

Kaiser Steel Corporation's Eagle Mountain operations are located in Southern California at a distance of about 130 miles east of the Corporation's steel plant at Fontana, California, and at a distance of about 225 miles from the nearest harbors which are located at Long Beach and Los Angeles, California Although the Eagle Mountain ore bodies are strategically located with respect to the steel plant and the harbor facilities, they are not of a very high grade and 'the geologic nature of the deposit makes it very difficult to mine and to concentrate. The iron ores occur as partial replacement of older zones mainly within dolomites and to a lesser extent within quartzites and quartz monzonites. The alteration was extremely variable and generally resulted in the formation of pyritic magnetic which, in part of the ore body, was leached to remove the pyrite and change the magnetite to hematite. Although the overall ore body is large, a major portion of it contains sulfur in the range of 1.0% to 5.0%. Obviously, this is too high a sulfur content for direct use in blast furnace feed.

In many mines, it is typical to stockpile material for milling based either on analyses from exploration and blasthole drilling, or on the observation and judgment of experienced personnel. New analytical instruments make it possible to perform multiple, rapid analyses of as-mined samples at or near the mining face, so that sorting into stockpiles can be much more accurate. Using data and operating practices from a phosphate mine, a model was developed to simulate the function of analytical instruments in ore-grade control and ore stockpiling. With this model, it is possible to determine the recommended sampling points and sample frequency to obtain the desired confidence limits on the stockpile analyses.
