To develop a quick, safe, and effective method that allows workers at mineral processing operations to clean their dust-soiled clothing periodically throughout the workday. Background Reducing workers' respirable dust exposure to silica and other harmful dusts and contaminants is an ongoing goal in the U.S. mining industry. One area of known worker exposure is from contaminated work clothes. A U.S. Bureau of Mines report documented a number of cases where a tenfold increase in a worker's dust exposure was measured from contaminated work clothes. In these cases, the dust emitted from clothing caused the worker's dust exposure to exceed the permissible exposure limit in less than 2 hours. The most effective way to eliminate this dust source is to have workers clean or change their work clothes. There are two federal regulations that impact the clothes-cleaning process. The first states that at no time shall compressed air be directed toward a person, but that when compressed air is used, then all necessary precautions shall be taken to protect persons from injury. The second regulation states that compressed air should only be used for cleaning purposes when it is less than 30 psi and used along with personal protective equipment. For the mining industry, by default, the only approved method to perform clothes cleaning is to have workers vacuum their clothes using a HEPA filter system. This is very difficult and time-consuming and, in most instances, not very effective. Most workers would prefer to use a single compressed air hose to blow dust from their work clothes. However, not only is this method prohibited by law, it usually creates a significant dust cloud in the work environment and contaminates coworkers.

"INTRODUCTION This is the first of a series of information circulars dealing with the control of roof and the prevention of accidents from falls of rock and coal. These circulars are being published to focus attention of the coal-mining industry on this most prevalent source of fatalities and injuries and to present factual information that should be helpful in reducing loss from these causes.Records of fatal accidents in the coal mines of the United States, from all causes, have been kept since 1906; during this period approximately 30,000 men have been killed by falls of rock and coal in the bituminous-coal mines, and more than 7,000 men have lost their lives in the Pennsylvania anthracite mines from the same causes. From 1906 to 1930, about 900 men were killed annually by falls of rock and coal in bituminous-coal mines, and about 200 men were killed annually in anthracite mines during the same 25-year period. From 1931 to the present time, the number killed annually from falls of rock and coal has averaged more than 500 men in bituminous-coal mines and about 125 men in Pennsylvania anthracite mines.Numerically the record of accidents from falls of rock and coal shows improvement, but on a percentage basis and on a million-man-hours-of-exposure basis little, if any, improvement has been made during the past 40 years. The cold fact is that, year after year, about 50 percent of all those killed in coal mines in the United States lose their lives from falls of rock and coal."

"Welfare endeavor in connection with both the metal and the coal mines of Utah has shown gratifying progress during recent years, and in most mining towns of the state, both the operators and their employees deserve much credit for the efforts put forth to better the living, working, educational and recreational conditions. Progress has been and is being made, but there are still a few important towns where purer water and better sewage disposal are pressing needs.In the older metal-mining towns that are incorporated and are independent of the mining properties operating in the vicinity, less opportunity is presented for the companies to exercise efforts looking toward improved welfare conditions than in company towns controlled by the mine operators.However, even in such towns the companies can do much to better welfare conditions, as shown by the progress in Bingham Canyon during the past several years. The Utah Copper Company has spent $800,000 since 1920, in the erection of modern brick cottages, apartment houses and the Germnell Memorial Club. The cottages and apartment houses have every convenience to be found in up-to-date city homes. The Gemmell Memorial Club erected and equipped at a cost of $175,000 was provided by the company for the benefit of the Utah Copper employees living in the canyon and has been made the recreational center for the camp. Another improvement is the $100,000 fireproof hotel built by the United States Mine of the United States Mining, Smelting and Refining; Co. in the Copperfield section of Bingham Canyon. This hotel will accommodate 105 men exclusive of hotel help and has all the conveniences of a city hotel."

SCOPE AND APPLICATION The rules cover the installation and use of electrical equipment in coal mines.- For generating stations, substations, lines, and equip¬ment aboveground, reference is made to existing rules covering such locations, viz, the National Electrical Code and the National Electrical Safety Code and any existing State or municipal regulations. The purpose of the rules is to set forth methods for safe electrical installation. In preparing the rules five basic measures for safe¬guarding the use of electricity in mines have been followed, viz 1. Remove the contributory causes of accidents or danger. 2. Remove from the vicinity of electrical apparatus all elements susceptible to the influence of electricity. 3. Keep the electric current where it belongs, if possible; if not, limit the area of its activity by protective devices. 4. Use a. large factor of safety in the selection, installation, and in¬ spection of equipment. 5. Have full control of the operation of electrically driven machines. The Bureau of Mines conducted an investigation to observe the effect of cetane improvers upon nitrogen oxides concentration in diesel exhaust gas. Amyl nitrite and amyl nitrate were used as additives to the fuel used in a four-cycle, single cylinder type test engine. It was concluded that nitrogen oxide concentrations were not enhanced at fuel-air ratios above 0.03 pound of fuel per pound of air.

In its search for a highly productive mining system for anthracite beds pitching from 100 to 200, where conventional mobile equipment cannot be used) the Bureau initiated a longwall project by introducing a shearer drum cutter loader of European origin. Because of the undulating nature of the roof and floor and changing bed thicknesses, the machine proved inflexible and extra work was required in lifting bottom coal and blasting top coal.

The Bureau of Mines has been carrying on an extensive diamond- drilling program during the past 7 years on deposits of strategic and critical minerals . Often the project reports and the drill-hole logs describe the findings only in terms of the mineral being sought at the time . Then , too , results may not always be interpreted alike by several mining engineers , and the cores therefore provide a permanent tangible record to complement the project reports . The cores from projects in the eastern divisions are being stored at the Mount Weather Testing Adit . Core from a representative hole ( or skeletonized sections from several holes , if these are more representative ) is selected at each project and shipped to Mount Weather for permanent storage . At the Testing Adit an underground room was prepared and storage racks were installed . Wooden core trays designed to accommodate cores of various sizes were purchased .

This is one of a series of circulars dealing with mining methods, practices, and costs. It describes the method of sinking a shaft 60 inches in diameter with a shot drill, as employed at the Idaho Maryland mine, Grass Valley, Calif. The operation involved a great deal of experimentation in applying the shot-drill method to large bore drilling, overcoming mechanical and other difficulties which developed during sinking, and developing operating technique. Under such circumstances, costs are obviously higher than they would be after the pioneer work has been done, but even so, these actually obtained compare favorably with costs of sinking by more conventional methods. Low-temperature heat capacities and standard enthalpy of formation of copper difluoride (CuF2) were determined by the Bureau of Mines. The low-temperature heat capacities were determined from 11 to 302 K by adiabatic calorimetry. The enthalpy of formation was determined by HC1 solution calorimetry. The standard values of entropy (S°) and enthalpy of formation (?Hf°) at 298.15 K are l8.65±0.03 cal/deg mole and -129.02±0.29 kcal/mole, respectively.

A deep longwall coal mine was instrumented with a three-dimensional microseismic system in order to help determine the exact strata mechanics associated with the rock failure, redistribution of stress and the associated gob formation from the longwall. Overall, 5,000 well calibrated seismic events were recorded during the mining of the panel. Analysis of these events showed a close correlation between the seismic activity and advance rate, and that the majority of the recorded seismic activity occurs in the immediate area of the advancing longwall face.

Approach A small lightweight pagerphone, having crocodile clips which pierce the phone line insulation, was developed. How It Works The Portable Telephone/Intercom is temporarily clipped onto an existing pagerphone line at any location, and operated like an intercom. It is riot necessary to strip the insulation from the pagerphone line to make the connection. In addition to the clips for connecting to pagerphone line, the Portable Telephone/Intercom consists of a small belt-carried control box, an ear-phone, and a bone-conduction microphone which is attached to the webbing in a miner's helmet. The goal of blasting is to get maximum fragmentation of the consolidated material in the overburden with optimum drilling and blasting cost. The amount of fragmentation required is determined by the stripping unit to be used In overburden removal. Many coal seams must also be broken by blasting; this is conducted before coal removal. There are environmental factors as well as due regard for public safety, health, and welfare that must be considered in choosing the blasting plan. The blasting plan should be made during preplanning and is based on data from the overburden cores. Analysis of the data will help In determining the kind of drilling equipment and bit types that will be needed for overburden preparation.

The Ecuadorean mineral sector and overall economy have retained their traditional dependence upon the production and export of hydrocarbon products. Exports of crude oil and its products accounted for 62% of the country's export earnings in 1985. Ecuador's major mineral commodities produced and exported were cement, gold, limestone, liquefied natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, natural gas, natural gasoline, crude petroleum and condensate, raw steel, semimanufactured steel products, and sulfur.

Two self-contained breathing apparatus of the closed-circuit compressed-oxygen type were evaluated for performance at 32° to -25° F. Low-temperature effects of oxygen and carbon dioxide concentration, visual properties of the facepiece, and mechanical operation of the apparatus were studied. Although operation varied with the wearer, his breathing rate, the apparatus precooling time, and the temperature, results suggest that general use of currently approved compressed-oxygen closed-circuit breathing apparatus be limited to temperatures above 32° F.

THIS CHAPTER of the Minerals Yearbook (Volume III) contains overall employment and injury experience for coal mines-bituminous, lignite, and anthracite; coke, petroleum and natural gas; and peat and slag plants; metal and nonmetal mines; sand and gravel operations; stone quarries; metallurgical plants, including metal mills and smelters; and nonmetal mills for 1959. Volume I of the yearbook contains injury experience and employment data in the metal, non-metal, sand and gravel, slag, and quarrying industries, and the milling operations and related plants. Volume II contains the injury experience and employment data in the fuel industries--coal, coke, petroleum and natural gas, and peat. Surveys conducted by the Bureau of Mines were the source of injury and employment data used to compile the tables and furnish information for the accompanying text. Response to the surveys was voluntary except that for coal mines. The Coal Mine Safety Act requires operators of coal mines to furnish the information requested.

Engineering controls for overburden drilling include dry dust collection systems, wet dust suppression systems, and enclosed cabs [Zimmer and Lueck 1986; Volkwein et al. 1979]. Proper maintenance of the dust suppression system is critically important for drills using dry dust suppression methods. Failure to rigorously maintain these systems will result in inadequate dust control. Acute silicosis has been reported in miners operating equipment that relies on dry dust suppression [NOSH 1992].

Research was conducted to determine the feasibility of extracting elemental oxygen from silicate-bearing melts by high-temperature electrolysis. The method was based on a modification of existing processes for electrowinning metals from their oxides dissolved in molten halide systems. Electrolyses were performed at temperatures ranging from 1,050° to 1,250° C in boron nitride cells that incorporated a silicon carbide cathode and an iridium anode. The electrolytes contained volcanic scoria as the oxygen source, plus mixtures of BaF2 and LiF as fluxing agents. Cell gases containing almost 14 volume-percent oxygen were obtained. The average anode current efficiency for several experiments of extended duration was calculated to be 55 percent. Cell design and operating conditions are described, and some of the problems associated with the process are discussed.
