This study is intended to serve three roles. First, it represents a global overview and summary to supplement and complement the five regional companion volumes of the 1991 edition of the Minerals Yearbook International Review. In this regard, it also extends previous time series under this title that appeared as the introductory chapter to the international volume of the Minerals Yearbook from the inception of that volume in 1963 until it was subdivided into separate regional volumes in 1989. The basic statistical presentations herein generally contain data through and including that for 1991, although in a few instances the most recent statistics are those for earlier years because more recent, comprehensive global statistics simply are not yet available owing to delays in data collection and processing in some countries and continued governmental suppression of data in others. The second role of this study is to provide an update to the coverage of events impacting the world's mineral industry that have occurred between the end of 1991 and the preparation of this study. Inclusion of this update is almost essential because of the potential effect of some of these events on global mineral industry activities.

Low-temperature heat capacities and high-temperature enthalpies were determined calorimetrically for Na2Cr04, A reversible transition was found at 700° K with an isothermal heat of transition of 2,263 cal/mole. High-temperature X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the transition was a crystal change from the low-temperature orthorhombic form to the high-temperature hexagonal form. At 795° K the hexagonal form had the parameters a, = 5.691 and co = 7.478 A. Powder diffraction data for the high-temperature form are given and possible structures discussed. The melting point was determined to be 1,065° K with a heat of fusion of 5,810 cal/mole. Enthalpy and entropy increments from this investigation were combined with other data from the literature to calculate enthalpies of formation, free energies of formation, and equilibrium constants of formation from 298° to 1,400° K. Equations that represent enthalpies above 298° K are given.

Improve the safety of salt mine workers by providing a means for quickly identifying areas within the mine that?s how an increased potential for gas and salt outbursts. Approach Outbursts occur in salt mines when a high-pressure pocket of gas is intercepted during the mining process, resulting in a sudden and sometimes catastrophic expulsion of gas and salt. In one case, the amount of gas released through such an event caused an explosion that resulted in five fatalities. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has designed and developed a gas outburst prediction system that can quickly determine the potential instability of areas within rock salt mines. The determination is based on noise measurements obtained from samples of the salt as they are dissolved in water. This system improves upon technology currently available because it provides information in only a few minutes instead of in several days. In addition, present prediction systems are not only time consuming, but expensive because they require laboratory conditions and highly trained personnel to operate them and determine results.

Past reports by the Bureau of Mines have described the extraction of alumina from numerous aluminum silicate materials by the lime-soda sinter process. The results from pilot-plant investigations of six materials, with alumina-to-silica mole ratios from 0.3 to 8.7, indicated a relationship between the alumina-silica ratios and the processing characteristics of the sinter. A series of laboratory tests was conducted to define this relationship. Sinter and leach tests determined that an alumina-to-silica mole ratio of 0.90 or greater resulted in the best alumina and soda recoveries while leaving the leach slurries practically free from any tendency toward gelation. The widely different chemical and mineralogic properties of the various aluminous materials used in compounding the mixes had no perceptible effect on the leaching characteristics of the sinter. The blending of low-cost, high-alumina materials with aluminum silicate materials to give an alumina-to-silica mole ratio of 0.90 or greater would improve alumina and soda extraction and minimize operating problems in the lime-soda sinter process.

The Bureau of Mines, in its efforts to insure the continued viability of the domestic minerals economy, has been engaged for several years in research on the extraction of alumina from domestic, nonbauxitic resources. Hydrochloric acid leaching of kaolin is one of the more promising technologies being studied for recovering alumina for feedstock to existing aluminum smelting capacity; 93 pct of this feedstock is currently imported either as bauxite or alumina. Organics contamination of pregnant leach liquor, originating during solvent extraction for removal of iron from aluminum chloride solution formed during hydrochloric acid leaching, causes rapid deterioration of the semihard rubber lining of process equipment. These organics were removed by a skimming tank-coalescer-activated carbon adsorption system. Organic levels of less than 10 ppm from the coalescer and less than 0.5 ppm from carbon adsorption were achieved. Analytical methods employing CC14 extraction and infrared spectrophotometry were developed to determine the organic content of both the liquor and the carbon. Mass transfer zones delineated in the carbon columns provide adsorption data for the design of larger systems.

Enhance hydraulic fragmentation technology by developing alternative grout sealing methods. Traditional grout scaling methods rely on chemical adhesion and require large contact areas to restrict high-pressure fluids. Fluid injection into rock requires economical and effective seals. With economical and effective seals, rock is easily fractured in tension by high-pressure fluid injection (fig. 1). Approach An innovative grouting technique was developed and tested by the Bureau. Slowly hydrating expanding chemicals are placed within a borehole and around a section of high-pressure tubing. Testing was conducted using 9/16-inch-OD smooth-walled injection tubes in 1.5-inch-ID holes. Seal lengths weir less than 10 inches and curing times were less than 24 hours.

This longitudinal field study was designed to encourage Appalachian coal miners in West Virginia and Pennsylvania to engage in hearing-protection behaviors. Method: Participants were mailed postcards that featured either a positive, negative, or neutral message on the outside of the postcard and a message encouraging hearing protection behaviors on the inside. The first posttest measurement of the effectiveness of the persuasive messages was conducted about a week after the postcards were mailed. The delayed posttest measurement was conducted six weeks later. Results: Responses from 307 coal miners revealed that the positive or neutral messages generated significantly more self-reported hearing protection behaviors than the negative message. Identical results were obtained in a delayed posttest assessment of miners' self-reported hearing protection behaviors. The positive message was also more effective than either the neutral or negative message in preventing defensive mechanisms from emerging over time. Impact on Industry: Positive and neutral messages were convincingly more than negative messages in facilitating self-reported hearing protection behaviors among coal miners. Provide a portable crushing capability to keep conveyor haulage close to the working face and permit more efficient and safer ore handling in low headroom, hardrock mines. Approach A readily portable jaw crusher is used which meets machine size, feed rock size, product size, and throughput requirements for low headroom, hardrock mines. How It Works The crusher is mounted on wheels to expedite frequent moves and to allow crushing of mined rock or ore near the working face. The crushed product is then placed on conveyor belts that are ex-tended as the crusher is moved. Keeping crushing and conveyor haulage near the face minimizes the haulage distances for trucks and loaders. Loading and haulage of run-of-mine ore is frequently the highest operational cost in underground mines. These costs can be significantly reduced by use of a belt conveyor, which is a common practice in coal and other soft mineral mines. The new low-profile hard rock crusher gives the same advantage of extensive belt haulage capabilities to low headroom, hardrock mines. The low-profile crusher will accept feed up to 30 inches when operating under 11 feet of headroom. The headroom required for crusher operation was reduced by tilting the jaws, feeding the crusher horizontally, and placing the eccentric shaft at the back or in a horizontal plane with the jaws. The purpose of this work was to develop and field test improved knee protection for underground coal miners working in low seam mines. In a previous phase of this contract (Sanders, 1982), experimental knee pads were developed and field tested. The field test revealed several design deficiencies with the knee pads, and suggestions for improving the design were made. The work summarized in this report, therefore, consists of modifying the design and method of fabrication of the knee pads originally describes by Sanders (1982), and of field testing the improved design. The new prototype was shorter and wider than the original design, and used a neoprene pass-through strap design rather than a cloth strap molded into the pad itself. The new prototype was constructed by slush molding a hollow bladder that was then filled with foam. Initial reactions to the pads in the field test were very positive. However, after two months, the opinions about the new prototype became less positive. They were judged, generally, to be no better or worse than the pads usually worn by the field-test participants. Problems were encountered in the field with respect to durability. Water seeped into the inner cavity of many of the pads and caused the foam to deteriorate. It was concluded that it would not be cost-effective or feasible to significantly improve upon current commercially available knee pad designs.

This Bureau of Mines work was performed to theoretically determine the effects of specimen radius and specimen boundary conditions on the stress state in the rock near the anchor for rock specimens used to investigate expansion anchor behavior. Finite element analyses were performed on mathematical models of varying radius and boundary conditions. A review of the results of these analyses revealed a definite convergence of all stress measures considered as the specimen radius increased. There was, however, a significant variation in all stress measures as the specimen diameter increased from 8 to 12 inches.

The Bureau of Mines smelted samples of chromite ore and concentrate from the General Services Administration (GSA) purchasing depot at Grants Pass, Oreg., in a submerged-arc furnace to establish smelting conditions and the energy requirement to produce high-carbon ferrochromium. Raw material, in the form of ore, flux, and reductant, and electrical energy are available on the Pacific coast to smelt the chromite. The concentrate can be smelted without prior agglomeration by employing hogged wood (wood chips) as a major portion of the reductant. The energy requirement is relatively low, about 3,960 kw.-hr. per ton of alloy. The ferrochromium produced will contain about 60 percent chromium. In addition to the smelting data, a statistical summary of the grade and amount of chromite purchased during the stockpile program and estimated chromite reserves and production volume are given. It is estimated that 632,000 tons of Cr203 contained in chromite of all grades is available in the western coastal States. Of this total there appears to be sufficient metallurgical-grade and beneficiable ore to sustain a smelting operation for 25 years at a consuming rate of 25,000 tons a year, utilizing material comparable to that delivered to the Government stockpile.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines and Michigan Technological University (MTU) are collaborating to develop an apparatus for measuring diesel tailpipe emissions in underground mines. A tailpipe emissions measurement apparatus (EMA) is described that dilutes diesel exhaust and measures the concentrations of diesel particulate matter (DPM), CO, CO, NO, and NO, at known dilution ratios. The EMA was evaluated by side-by-side comparison of its measurements with those by laboratory- grade instruments. Concentrations of CO and CO, measured by the EMA were usually within + 14 pct of concentrations measured by laboratory-grade instruments for CO and 220 pct for CO,. EMA- measured DPM concentrations were, on average, 29 pct lower than those measured by laboratory-grade instruments, with the differences being fairly consistent. The CO and CO, differences are related to the method of calculating the EMA's dilution ratio, and the difference in DPM concentrations is attributed to thermophoretic and/or condensation losses related to the EMA's unheated sample probe. Preliminary analysis of data obtained with a heated sampling probe and modifications in the sampling procedures have indicated reduced variability in DPM and in the calculated dilution ratios.

Demand for arsenic trioxide dropped markedly during 1983, primarily as a result of a 27% reduction in cotton planting. As an oversupply of arsenic trioxide developed, prices declined for both domestic and imported material. Domestic Data Coverage.-Commercial-grade arsenic trioxide and arsenic metal were produced by only one U.S. company, which voluntarily reported its production to the Bureau of Mines. To prevent disclosure of proprietary data, the production data have been withheld.

Studies were made to determine the character and distribution of the copper lost in copper mill tailings. Acid soluble (oxide) and acid insoluble (sulfide) copper were determined for heavy-liquid sink and float products of screen-sized fractions from 12 copper mill tailings. In most of the tailings studied, the coarse-size fractions are higher in copper grade than the respective bulk tailings, high in sulfide copper, and low in oxide copper. Oxide copper occurs predominantly in the minus 325-mesh "slimes." Microscopic examination of heavy-liquid sink products indicated that recovery of liberated copper sulfide minerals is complete in most mills, and that copper minerals not being recovered are locked with gangue particles. Additional copper could probably be recovered from most tailings by size classification, scavenger froth flotation of the coarse fraction, and regrinding of the concentrate to achieve liberation of the locked sulfides.

As part of its work for the improvement of safety conditions in mines , the Bureau of Mines has undertaken to establish a list of permissible storage - battery locomotives for use in gaseous mines , and , to this end , has issued Schedule 15 , "Procedure for Establishing a List of Permissible Storage -Battery Locomotives for Use in Gaseous Mines . " Up to the present time , two approvals * have been issued under this Schedule , and considerable testing work done on four other applications which have been made for approval . Prior to the publication of Schedule 15 , the Bureau conducted both field and laboratory investigations to determine the hazard from the batteries used in mine locomotives . ** These investigations indicated that the safety of the locomotive would depend largely on proper care of the battery , also on the use of a battery as mechanically rugged as possible . For this reason the Bureau staff , in testing locomotives submitted for approval , considered it advisable to subject the batteries to a jarring or bumping test to prove their adequacy as regards mechanical endurance and ruggedness . These tests on the batteries of the locomotives are described below.

The Bureau of Mines developed a mathematical model that decribes the interaction of an automated breathing and metabolic simulator, or lung, with a self-contained· self-rescuer that is supplied compressed oxygen. The model can be used to predict the gas partial volumes of 0z, Nz, and COz in the lung and in the self-rescuer breathing bag for a prescribed metabolic state that characterizes the lung. Nonlinear rate equations are used to describe the temporal evolution of the gas partial volumes. A numerical procedure was established with a FORTRAN computer program to solve these equations, which correspond to a given metabolic state. Examples are presented of applications of the model to predict bag volume and bag oxygen concentration changes with time when the bag is controlled by an automated breathing simulator. Under certain restrictive conditions, the model equations can also be used to analytically pre-dict the time required for the bag to reach a maximum or minimum volume. The model equation in this latter case was extended to transi-tions between metabolic states, with transitions described as exponential growth or decay processes.

Now you know why there is concern about mine illumination. You have some idea about how the human eye works and about the problems of glare, peripheral vision, and accommodation. And you know that lighting in a mine presents special problems because of the dark surroundings and low reflectance. This chapter describes what can be done to improve conditions. This chapter begins with a short discussion about Federal Standards on mine lighting -- what they are and what is being done to carry them out. The chapter then describes different types of lamps that can be used for mine lighting, and discusses their advantages and disadvantages. Finally, the chapter lists some things that you can do personally to improve lighting, or can point out to others so that improvements can be made. The Federal Government is doing its part to improve mine lighting by establishing regulations. Lamp manufacturers are constantly studying new lamps to provide better equipment. And your company will do its part to comply with regulations. Better lights may not be here yet, but they will be soon. But in the end, you are the one who will be using the lights, and you are in the best position to see the improvements. You are also in the best position to see and tell others where further improve¬ments can be made.

Raw non fuel minerals produced in the United States during 1981 had an estimated value of $25 billion, about the same as that of 1980. In terms of 1980 dollars. the value of minerals produced during 1981 was $23 billion.2 This chapter includes tables for 1980 that were not available for publication in the 1980 Minerals Yearbook, but does not include the corresponding tables for 1981. The underlying causes of the overall decline in U.S. nonfuel mine production during 1981 were varied, but the common factor was the worldwide recession. In some cases the decline was traced to foreign competition. For example, iron ore production was lower in part because of increased imports of steel products such as coiled steel sheet. Another problem experienced by the domestic mining industry was the continuing difficulty in attracting capital. This was due in part to the attractiveness of investments outside the mining industry, such as short-term, high-interest securities. Another reason was the importation of commodities from countries where overall costs were lower because of such factors as high ore grade, lower taxes, lower wages, government subsidies, and less stringent safety and environmental regulations.

The Bureau of Mines is engaged in a continuing research effort toward the recovery of alumina from kaolinitic clay and other nonbauxitic domestic minerals. Hydrochloric acid extraction of calcined clay is among the acid processes under consideration. Although aluminum is easily leached from calcined clay, the presence of fines and slimes in the leached residue has hindered the application of this and other acid leaching processes. A clay feed preparation method was therefore developed that eliminated the slimy nature and the separation problems normally associated with leached clay residues. The preparation process consists of crushing the raw clay to minus 20 mesh, dampening the crushed clay with a fine water mist while tumbling on a rotating disk, and calcining the misted clay at 750° C. The misting process increases residue settling rates threefold to 9 cm/min (18 ft/hr) and filtration rates by two orders of magnitude. Leaching-kinetics were determined for misted clay feeds in a batch, stirred-tank reactor. Rapid leaching occurred during the first 85 to 90 pct of the extraction. The linear relationship of extraction to time during this initial phase corresponded to a zero order reaction with a rate constant of around 10 pct/min.

"IntroductionInhalation of crystalline silica is often associated with the development of pulmonary disease (Ziskind et al., 1976). Recently, it has been proposed that freshly sheared silica .may have surface properties that make it more reactive with lung tissue than aged silica, and that this unique reactivity ·of freshly crushed silica enhances its pathogenicity. A recent study in our laboratory strongly supports this theory (Vallyathan, et al., 1988a; 1988b). We found that grinding of silica cleaves bonds in a silica tetrahedral lattice generating reactive free radicals sites on the surface of the silica particles. The presence of surface radicals on freshly ground silica was monitored by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The ESR signal generated from fresh silica in air is characteristic of Si-0 and Si radicals. Evidence, i.e., the ESR signal after the addition of a spin trap (DMPO) and its sensitivity to ethanol, indicates that these silicon-based surface radicals can react with water to form hydroxyl radicals (OH). Results also indicate that these surface radicals make fresh silica more cytotoxic than aged silica; i.e., fresh silica causes more membrane damage as evidenced by hemolysis and lipid peroxidation. Therefore, the presence of reactive sites on the surface of freshly cleaved silica may play a significant role in its pathogenicity.If surface· free radicals are related to cytotoxicity, then screening dusts for the existence of such radicals may predict their relative pathogenicity. Since an ESR spectrometer is not available to many laboratories, the objective of this study was to develop a quick and simple technique to monitor the existence of reactive surface sites on dust. The technique chosen was the measurement of chemiluminescence using a liquid scintillation counter; i.e., an instrument which·would be accessible to most investigators."
