Estimates are given for the distance from a seismometer at which a miner can probably be detected. The procedure in making these estimates was to first establish the natural noise levels at the output of a surface seismometer for the 25 to 100 Hz frequency passband. The noise levels give the range of values which may be expected in areas with no man-made noise. For each noise level, we give the detection threshold which, when exceeded, indicates that a signal has been received. Based on the signals recorded by Westinghouse, curves are given which show the peak signal amplitude as a function of source- to-receiver distance (slant range). Curves are given for the Westinghouse seismic thumper, a 50-pound timber, and a sledge. For a given type of source, the receive signal strength depends more strongly on slant range than on any other factor. However, there is approximately a five-to-one scatter in the amplitudes. Thus, further study of factors affecting the signal amplitude might allow better estimates to be made for any particular geological setting. Combining the signal amplitude with the detection thresholds for the different noise conditions gives the distances at which a miner should be detected. These are given in Table l* below. [ ] The text also gives the increase in detection ranges which should occur if steps are taken to increase S/N by 10 dB. We feel that 10 dB is a conservative estimate of the improvement possible. Improve surface mine haul-age truck safety and efficiency by providing a means for sensing the weight and distribution of the truck's load. Approach The safety hazards and the economic implications of overloading mine-haulage trucks were analyzed to determine the net effect of that practice on mine operations. The analysis indicated that: Ten to 25 pct overloading is typical; Higher haulage, tire, and maintenance costs occur due to overloading (a 20 pct overload was estimated to increase operating costs 7 pct per ton); Ten to 15 pct of haulage? truck injuries and fatalities are attributable to overload conditions, at a cost over one million dollars per year to the mining industry. Vehicle-weighing technology that conformed to the performance specification for an off-highway haulage truck overload detection system was selected for in-mine testing. How It Works Normally, volumetric estimates are made during the loading sequence which do not account for the varying ore density. Hence, the actual weight of a load is never precisely known. By providing a precise measurement, an overload detection system will not only indicate vehicle overloading, but will also show under-utilization of the truck. One system tested by the Bureau of Mines was the ?Load Analyzer" manufactured by Pactronics Corporation in California. This system consists of a meter-type analog readout for the cab console and three "Electrosensors" (linear variable differential transformers) attached to the main frame. Using conventional welding and brazing techniques, two sensors are attached between the front members of the engine sub-frame and the top of the left and right trailing arms (one sensor per arm). The same techniques are used to attach the third sensor to the rear centerline of the truck. between the main frame cross member and the A-frame. The readout unit on the cab console indicates by color-coding whether each sensor loading is under (green), at (yellow), or over (red) the pre-set rated load. The three-sensor configuration with in-dependent readouts also detects uneven distribution of the load.

Diamond-bit performance and cost data accumulated in core-drilling sandstones reveal significant trends of economic interest. Large-size, AA-Grade drill bort suffered less diamond loss per foot drilled than any other size or grade of diamonds assessed. Detailed analyses of the factors that affect diamond-bit performances -diamond size, diamond quality, bit size, bit type, percentage of core recovered, and physical characteristics of bit matrices -are assessed in the tables, graphs, and discussion. INTRODUCTION Since 1945 the Bureau of Mines has been compiling detailed performance records on diamond bits used in core drilling throughout the United States and Alaska. Analytical reports covering bit performance in various rocks are issued as in-formation on a significant number of bits used in anyone type of rock is accumulated. The first three such reports analyzed bit performance in gneiss,2/ schist,3/ and lime-stone and dolomite.4/ This report evaluates diamond-bit performance in sandstone. Data obtained from 627 bits, which drilled 42,665 feet on 45 different projects, are presented. The geographical distribution of the projects is shown in figure 1.

As part of a program to maintain an adequate supply of minerals and metals to meet national economic and strategic needs, the Bureau of Mines conducted research to determine the diffusion coefficients for ferric ions in synthetic copper leach solutions. Determination of ferric ion diffusion coefficients in typical dump leach solutions is necessary for predicting leaching rates of copper from large-scale leaching operations and for optimizing concentrations of ferric iron in solutions to maximize leaching efficiency. Derivative chronopotentiometry, an electroanalytical technique, was used to determine ferric ion diffusion coefficients. The diffusion coefficient decreased dramatically with increasing concentration of iron in solution. An empirical model was used to relate the ferric ion diffusion coefficient to the total amount of sulfate in solution. Measuring the diffusion coefficient dependence on temperature yielded an activation energy of 5.5 kcal/mole of ferric ion. Activity coefficients of ferric ions as a function of concentration were calculated from diffusion coefficient data.

Improve the effectiveness of person-wearable self-contained self rescuer (PWSCSR) training by enhancing the memory retention of trainees in proper donning procedures. Background In the fall of 1989, a total of 185 miners and inspectors were trained by Bureau of Mines personnel to don the SR-100 PWSCSR using the Bureau's 3+3 method. With the exception of a few individuals, miners were trained underground in an area set up within their working sections. The instructional protocol was as follows: (1) after placing an SR-100 simulator (equipped with a cleaned and disinfected mouthpiece assembly) on the mine floor in front of the worker, a researcher guided him or her step-by-step through the complete donning procedure, (2) the miner was required to perform each step slowly, methodically, and correctly while being talked through the sequence, (3) following this pre-practice instruction, the apparatus was repacked and the subject donned the device without coaching, while being evaluated, (4) if an error was made, the worker received corrective feedback, the unit was repacked, and the entire donning trial was redone. This procedure was repeated until the miner achieved a perfect 3+3 sequence.

The extremely sluggish oxidation of steel scrap was appreciably accelerated when the charge was pretreated in aqueous solutions of sodium metavanadate or sodium molybdate. The degree of oxidation acceleration was inversely correlated with the melting point of the promoter oxide possessing the highest valency. The magnitude of oxidation enhancement exhibited a systematic inverse dependence on the duration of pickling processes; mere dipping of the oxidizable charge in the vanadate bath was most effective. In general, the rate of steel scrap oxidation increased with increasing concentration of the pickling reagent. The results are explained on the basis of the hydrolytic decomposition of the pickling agent with subsequent slow interaction with the metal surface, coupled with the tendency of vanadium to form polyanions in alkaline media. The data not only served to elucidate the mechanism by which catastrophic oxidation takes place, but also showed that the accelerating species need not be alloyed with the oxidizable metal; surface impregnation by minute amounts of the accelerating species can still produce catastrophic effects.

To develop a reliable, remotely-controlled, mobile roof support to eliminate the need to set posts, cribs, or props while extracting coal pillars. Approach The primary danger during pillar extraction is premature caving of the mine roof. The roof must cave predictably and dependably to ensure the safety of miners. Support during retreat mining is usually obtained by setting posts, cribs, props, roof bolts, or a combination of these devices. These are set manually by miners in the working area. To help minimize the danger to mine workers and to equipment posed by premature falls, the Bureau of Mines developed the mobile roof support (MRS) system to secure the roof during pillar extraction. How It Works The Mobile Roof Support (MRS) is eight-feet-wide, ten-feet-long and five-feet-high, with twelve inches of ground clearance. It is ruggedly built and exerts less than 20 psi ground pressure. The MRS is powered by a 40-hp, 460-v AC permissible motor. The reversible, variable tram speed is 80 ft/min on a 20-percent grade. It is tire-mounted, has a trailing cable, and is remotely controlled either by a radio or a tether communication cable. The machine carries four 50-ton jacks which serve as props for working heights from seven to fifteen feet. Two jacks are chassis-mounted and two are on swing arms. Each jack has a cap which distributes the roof load to three paints. The swing jacks form a breaker row to stop falling roof and prevent caving Into the work area. One jack has a visual load indicator and a second is wired to the machine lighting system. Blinking lights indicate when the preset loading is being exceeded. In the case of excessive loads, an ability to remotely jettison either or both swing jacks has been incorporated into the system to permit removal of the MRS while the roof is still supported.

Methane-flow and pressure data taken from a mine in the Pocahontas No. 3 coalbed are compared with flow rates from lump coal obtained in laboratory experiments. From this, it is concluded that the main source of gas is the intact coalbed rather than a "crushed zone" near the working face. The permeability and sorption capacity of the intact coalbed are calculated and gas emission rates are theoretically accounted for.

Provide a means for reliable in situ stress change measurements in soft, friable geologic materials under high stress. Background Effective mine design requires a knowledge of changes in rock stress generated by a mining operation. In situ stress measurement can provide a means of obtaining this knowledge from an active mine for the ultimate purpose of design verification and analysis. The Bureau of Mines has designed and tested a device for measuring changes in rock stress-the borehole platened flatjack (BPF). It has found application in investigating stress anomalies due to geologic structures, stress concentrations from multiple seam interaction, and stress abutments from pillar retreat and longwall mining.

The Technical Study Panel on the Utilization of Belt Air and the Composition and Fire Retardant Properties of Belt Materials in Underground Coal Mining (hereafter referred to as the Panel or the TSP) was established by Section 11 of the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act). The Panel was charged with providing “independent scientific and engineering review and recommendations with respect to the utilization of belt air and the composition and fire retardant properties of belt materials in underground coal mining.” The TSP was impaneled by the Honorable Elaine L. Chao and commenced its work on January 9, 2007. At this first meeting, Mr. Richard E. Stickler, Assistant Secretary of Labor for Mine Safety and Health, asked the Panel to report on many issues including how recent technological advances could be applied to atmospheric monitoring systems, point-type heat sensors, current state of fire-resistant vs. fireproof belt materials, and belt fire suppression systems to improve miner safety. In addition, Mr. Stickler asked the Panel to review belt air velocity limitations. The Panel members attended 12 days of public meetings over a nine-month period. Three of the public meetings were scheduled for the Panel to hear from technical experts and those persons or organizations interested in providing input. The meetings were held in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania with emphasis on belt fires, belt maintenance, belt flammability and toxicity, ventilation, and escape issues; in Salt Lake City with emphasis on ground control and convergence issues; and in Birmingham with emphasis on fire detection, sensors and atmospheric monitoring systems. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) personnel, representatives of the major belt conveyor manufacturers and a representative of the National Mining Association provided discussions at the Coraopolis meeting. In Salt Lake City, Utah, MSHA district managers and ventilation specialists, a member of the Aracoma Mine No. 1 investigation team, a representative of the Bureau of Land Management, and industry and consulting representatives of the Utah Mining Association and the Colorado Mining Association made presentations. In Birmingham, Alabama, atmospheric monitoring system representatives, NIOSH researchers, representatives of coal mining companies, and UMWA workers from two Alabama mining companies made presentations. In addition, a staff member of The Center for Regulatory Effectiveness also presented comments to the Panel. In conjunction with the meetings in Salt Lake City and Birmingham, three-member subcommittees of the Technical Study Panel made field visits to the Skyline Mine, the Aberdeen Mine, and the Jim Walter Resources Mine No. 4. The mine visits were scheduled to see first-hand the mining conditions under which belt air was being utilized as an additional source of intake air for working sections.

Develop technology for preparing thick corrosion-resistant coatings and electroforms of iron-chromium-nickel alloys. Approach To reduce the United States' dependence upon foreign sources for supplies of strategic and critical metals such as chromium, cobalt, and nickel, new technology must be devised to conserve these valuable commodities. One approach being investigated by the Bureau of Mines is the use of a modified-aqueous-electrodeposition method to prepare thick (-25 µm), complex alloy coatings (e.g., stainless steel composition) with properties similar to the commercial alloys. An alloy coating on a low-alloy steel or carbon steel substrate would require significantly less strategic and critical metals than those contained in an equivalent mass of the commercial alloy. Coatings applied to appropriate mandrel materials make possible the preparation of intricately-shaped alloy electroforms (near-net-shape parts). As a result, the loss of valuable metals associated with machining finished products would be minimized.

As part of its goal to minimize the requirements for mineral commodities through conservation and substitution, the Bureau of Mines is conducting research to determine the resistance of alumina refractories to corrosion by alkali-containing slags that could result from burning of the abundant Western lignites in metallurgical operations. Static corrosion tests were performed at 1,000° to 1,350° C and dynamic tests were performed at 1,400° to 1,600° C to investigate the stability of refractory specimens in slag environments. In general, the degree of refractory attack increased with decreasing alumina content in the refractory and with increasing alkali content of the lignite ash. The parabolic kinetics observed in static tests suggested that a reaction product layer is formed through which ionic diffusion must occur to sustain the reaction with the refractory material. The linear kinetics observed in dynamic tests in high-viscosity slags indicated a shearing of the reaction product layer by viscous slags. The observed lesser attack of refractories by low-viscosity slags can be explained on this basis. Two 99-percent-alumina refractories and two 90-percent-alumina refractories formed an expanded protective layer with the more viscous slags but not with the less viscous slags. Corrosion of 90-percent-alumina refractories increased exponentially with temperature. In refractories with the same nominal alumina content, those that contain a combination of a-Al203 and mullite (3A1203?2Si02) have better corrosion resistance than those containing a combination of a-Al203, cristobalite (Si02 mineral), and mullite. In alkali environments (1,300 to 1,400° C), 90-to 99-percent-alumina refractories are recommended for use as furnace linings.

For this reason, specific references to Bermuda, Guadeloupe, Martinique, and the Netherlands Antilles have been removed from textual and trade table presentations. Any significant future developments will be reported as they occur. Readers are referred to earlier Minerals Yearbook editions for previous information. Table 1 production statistics have been modified in some instances. References to certain nonmetal commodities were eliminated because information has often been unreliable. Their inclusion in table 1 was not considered important to either an overview of the area or to compatibility with volume I of the Minerals Yearbook.

This information circular. deais primarily with an engineering descrip- tion of a type of longwall cutting and loading machine developed by Eick- hoff Maschinenfabrik, Bochum, Germany..: This machine is supposed to have been developed and tested during the latter part of 1941 and early 1942. The only source of information is con- tained in certain literature and engineering data, with drawings which were acquired by the Allied Military Authorities when Germany was occupied; and the information will have to be limited because the writer has not seen the machine in the factory or in operation. However, the information may be of interest to the coal-mining industry in this country, and for this reason our Government has decided to publish the data procured so far. The Eickhoff cutting and loading machine is particularly suitable for the longwall mining system. It can only be used under that type of mining system and is not suitable for the more common type known in this country as room-and-pillar work. The material for the description of the machine and its operation was compiled and translated from German drawings and operating instructions. These detailed drawings and instructions are on file with the Bureau of Mines and are available for inspection by any responsible person interested in the details of the construction of the machine.

"IntroductionOn May 27, 1927, a coal-dust explosion occurred at the Palagua No. 5 mine of the Victor American Fuel Company, Delagua, Colorado, resulting in the loss of even lives and in and in considerable damage to the main slope and to several overcasts the explosion did not extend into the mine working where 125 additional men were employed but escaped uninjured. It is believed that the saving of these 125 men and the evidence of large property loss were due in a large measure to coal-dusting and of other sanity measures taken by the coal company management. A number of features connected with the explosion and mine safety practice seem worth the attention of the mining public and grateful acknowledgment is made to the Victor American Fuel Company for its aid in assembling the data herein contained."

An ozone detector was built and evaluated for its applicability in smog-chamber studies. The detection method is based on the reaction of ozone with ethylene and the measurement of resultant chemiluminescence. In the first phase of evaluation, the detector's response to ozone was studied as a function of several instrument parameters, and optimum conditions were defined for the maximum and most stable responses to ozone. In subsequent evaluations, the method was checked for sensitivity, precision, and interferences and was compared with two alternative methods. Results showed the chemiluminescence method to be acceptably sensitive and precise for smog-chamber studies and superior to the Mast ozone meter and KI (colorimetric 1 percent neutral-potassium iodide method) methods in that it is specific for ozone.

This paper is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines describing methods and costs of mining and preparing sand and gravel for market at various plants throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding the methods used. The cost tabulations represent operating expenditures only and not total costs. It is recognized that publication of total costs might in many instances cause embarrassment to individual producers as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to the technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. The Clowdy plant, with which this paper deals, is located 7 miles west of Dallas, Tex., and has a rail connection with the Texas and Pacific Railway. In addition to the rail outlet there is a paved road over which materials produced at this plant can be moved into Dallas by truck.

To improve the reliability of the Bureau developed bore-hole gage now widely used to determine the absolute state of stress in rock. Approach Use the knowledge gained by extensive field tests to design a more rugged and reliable Instrument using lighter and stronger materials. How It Works The original gage consisted of a stainless steel cylinder 1-3/8 Inches In diameter and 10-1/2 inches long. The new gage is made from titanium. This lighter material reduces the weight of the gage by 43 percent, which enhances the gage placement and depth of overcoring in vertical up? holes. For added strength, the titanium case and placement end are now threaded to the gage body instead of using screw fasteners. Three pairs of strain gaged transducers are positioned to measure the diametral deformation of a 1-1/2 diameter borehole at 60-degree intervals around the Inner surface of the borehole. Each transducer consists of a beryllium copper cantilever with a strain gage cemented on each side. These transducers are secured Into the gage body by a tapered shank for minimal creep. The transducers opposite each other are wired together to form a 4-arm external bridge circuit. A pair of transducers is referred to as a component. Any deformation of the borehole, which occurs during overcoring, is detected by pistons which translate the motion to the components. Each

The Convertol process, recently developed in western Germany, is a new method of cleaning and dewatering coal-washery slurries. It is a modified bulk-oil process, in which a very small quantity of heavy oil is dispersed over the surfaces of the coal particles, followed by a screen centrifuge operation in which the water and dirt (clay, shale, and pyrite particles) are thrown out through the screen perforations and the clean coal particles are retained on the screen and discharged as a dewatered, clean coal product of 8- to l0-percent surface moisture. It is reported, also, that the process oil, all of which is retained in the clean-coal product, adds to the coking power of the coal and facilitates the production of briquets, reducing the proportions of binding material required.

Newton's method of solving a nonlinear equation is employed to develop a least-squares acoustic emission source location method in which the spatial residuals of the location equations are minimized. These residuals, related to the distances from the least-squares source location perpendicular to the surfaces described by the location equations, permit location error to be estimated to first order along the spatial axes. The solutions obtained by this method are the best spatial solutions to the location equations in the least-squares sense. Also presented is a procedure by which the geometrical control of a transducer array can be evaluated using the rate of change of source location with fractional velocity change.
