Several promising systems for selectively oxidizing the iron in an iron-tin alloy commonly called "hardhead" were investigated in a research project conducted to devise a method for recovering tin from this troublesome alloy. A satisfactory oxidation method was developed and tested successfully on melts of 2,000 grams. Molten hardhead (near 1,080° C.) was blown with air to oxidize iron and leave tin in the reduced state. Recovery of available tin was 96 to 98 percent. Tin products contained 2 to 0.1 percent iron which was reduced to 0.06 percent by filtration at 250° C. Iron oxide formed during oxidation was absorbed by a fluid flux cover composed of 43 percent silica, 17 percent burned limestone, and 40 percent fused borax. Less successful but nevertheless promising results were obtained with mixtures of steam and hydrogen which were sufficiently selective at temperatures between 600° and 950° C. but did not result in complete oxidation of iron. Carbon dioxide-carbon monoxide mixtures also oxidized iron selectively but incompletely. Both stern and carbon dioxide systems produced sufficiently encouraging results to additional research on these systems.

The Bureau of Mines investigated leaching of selected copper sulfide minerals and a composite of impure flotation concentrates at elevated temperatures and pressures with ammoniacal solutions. Copper 1 (tractions of 96 percent were obtained by leaching chalcopyrite at 75° C under oxidizing conditions for 60 minutes. An extraction of 99 percent of the copper contained in the composite concentrate was obtained by leaching the product for 90 minutes at 75° C. In tests of bornite, chalcocite, and covellite, 90 to 97 percent of the copper was extracted at 20° C provided an 8-hour reaction period was used. At 75° C essentially complete dissolution of the copper from these three minerals was accomplished in 60 minutes. Additions of ammonium sulfate to the leach solutions were required to obtain high-percentage extractions of the copper from bornite, chalcocite, and covellite. Although ammonium sulfate was not required when digesting chalcopyrite, copper extraction was enhanced and less free ammonia was required when ammonium sulfate was added to the leach pulps. The chemistry of leaching copper minerals was studied. It was C, termined that chalcocite altered to covellite as one step in the dissolution When leaching iron-bearing copper sulfides, hydrated iron oxide formed on the mineral surfaces, indicating that a diffusion process prevailed. No evidence of covellite was detected.

The Bureau of Mines conducted this research to determine the feasibility of using soil redox measurements, a relatively new method in mining geophysics, to locate or define a variety of conditions that are hazardous or otherwise of interest to the mining industry. The method was used in three widely separated areas in an attempt to de- fine subsurface concentrations of methane, the edges of coal-burn areas, and a hydrothermal vein set. Both a description of the method used and test cases are given in this report.

Fatal accidents at coal mines throughout the United States numbered 170 during May , 1923 , according to reports received by the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior from State mine inspectors . The production of coal during the month was 54,649,000 tons ; hence , the fatality rate was 3.11 per million tons . In May last year the fatality rate was 4.22 , based upon an output of 20,636,000 tons , including 35,000 tons of anthracite . Because of the miners ' suspension of work last year, the production of fresh-mined anthracite in May 1922 was completely stopped ; in May 1923 the anthracite output was 9,573,000 tons . For bituminous mines alone , the fatality rate in May 1923 was 2.67 per million tons as compared with 4.17 in May a year ago . During the first five months of the present year , the fatality rate for bituminous mines was 3.55 per million tons , based on 809 deaths , as against a rate of 3.70 for the corresponding months last year, based on 611 deaths . The rate for 1923 represents a reduction of 4 per cent . For anthracite mines alone the five-month fatality rate for 1923 was 5.36 per million tons , based on 228 fatalities , as against a rate of 6.72 for the first five months of 1922 based on 147 fatalities . The rate for 1923 represents a reduction of 20 per cent . The average fatality rate for May during the past ten years ( 1913-1922 ) is 3.37 per million tons for bituminous coal mines and 6.02 per million tons for anthracite mines . A gas explosion , due to open light , occurred on May 6 at Aguila , Colorado , and resulted in the death of ten men . This explosion brought the number of "major disasters " in 1923 to 4 , with a loss of 145 lives . During the first five months of last year, there were 7 similar disasters with a loss of 82 lives . The year's record to date for all fatalities from all causes shows a reduction in the fatality rates per million tons from haulage accidents and from falls of roof and coal , an increase in explosions of gas and dust and in accidents due to electricity , and no change in the fatality rate from explosives . The reductions in haulage accidents and in falls of roof and coal are particularly gratifying, because these two classes of accidents usually cause about 65 per cent of all fatalities in the coal-mining industry . The Bureau of Mines, in a continuing effort to improve processes and methods of helium purification, has developed a differential distillation method for removing helium-3 from helium-4. Differential distillation at 4.2 to 1.6 K was used to reduce the helium-3 in helium-4 from about 200 to less than 1 part per billion. The results from four stills ranging in size from 1 to 25 liters are reported. The method has the potential to be adapted to commercial-scale separations.

The Bureau of Mines has recently identified five major factors that contribute to high respirable dust levels on the six U.S. longwall faces having the most difficulty complying with Federal dust standards: (1) a poorly structured cutting sequence, (2) a poorly designed external water spray system, (3) marginal waterflow to the cutting drums, (4) minimal controls at the stage loader and crusher, and (5) the lack of effective controls for dust generated during support advance. The results of this survey illustrate the need to address all the major sources of longwall dust generation and the need for mine operators to implement a variety of control procedures to assure compliance. The Bureau of Mines will continue to assist mine operators in implementing improved dust controls and will work to identify and evaluate controls for dust generated during support advance.

This paper describing the methods employed in the purchasing and supply departments of the Miami Copper Co., Miami, Ariz., is one of a series being prepared for and published by the United States Bureau of Mines on office practice in mining operations. GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Miami Copper Co.'s plant is located about 1 mile from the town of Miami, in the Globe-Miami Mining District, Gila County, Ariz. The property consists of a complete mining plant, concentrator, high-pressure steam power plant, and many other attendant structures. In normal times the company employs about 1,500 men, and mines and mills about 6,000,000 tons of ore annually.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines evaluated the self-contained self-rescuer (SCSR) donning proficiency of 243 miners. These workers were from eight underground coal mines in the eastern United States. The objectives of the study were (1) to gather information on skill levels, since all miners in the study had prior instruction and opportunity to practice donning the apparatus, and (2) to summarize a quality control procedure useful in conducting periodic evaluations of donning proficiency. The sampling procedure used proved to be both reasonable and efficient in gathering information on training effectiveness. It also provided a good statistical base for making informed site-specific decisions regarding SCSR training needs. Results from the observed samples at each of the eight mines indicate a wide variability across sites. The rate at which miners failed to isolate their lungs varied from 3.3 to 40.0 pet. Concomitantly, proficiency rates (miners either performing adequately or demonstrating a perfect 3 + 3 sequence) ranged from 13.3 to 63.3 pet.

There are no active mines in the Mt. Eddy RARE II area. Chromite, gold, and stone prospects were examined. The RARE II area contains no identified mineral resources; however, a sample of a 260 ton occurrence contained 38.1 percent chromium oxide (Cr203) at the Ratero Prospect (fig. 1, no. 3), which has low potential for chromium resources. The Johnson Mine (fig. 1, no. 6) produced a small unrecorded amount of chromite during World War IT, but only a low potential exists for chromium resources. A low potential exists for gold resources at the Half Century Prospect (fig. 1, no. 2). At a borrow pit northwest of the study area (fig. 1, no. 1), sheared serpentinite is quarried for road metal; similar rock occurs in the RARE II area, but better material is more readily available elsewhere. Sand and gravel occurrences are too inaccessible and distant from markets to be considered resources. Mineral fuels and geothermal resources were not evaluated during this Bureau of Mines study. There currently are three unpatented lode mining claims in the study area. INTRODUCTION The Mt. Eddy RARE II area is 7 air-mi west of Mt. Shasta City, California, and straddles the Siskiyou-Trinity county line. The roadless area includes 7,200 acres of rugged, glacially carved, ridges and drainages which comprise Mt. Eddy. Elevations vary from 6,000 ft along the North Fork Sacramento River to 9,025 ft at the summit of Mt. Eddy. The area is covered with conifer forest below 8,000 ft elevation.

This publication, an abstract of a progress report covering an investigation of hazards in thermal coal-drying plants has been prepared according to the suggestions and recommendations of a committee6/ appointed by J. J. Forbes, Director of the Bureau of Mines, when the original report was reviewed at a meeting of representatives of the mining industry, operators of coal-drying plants, coal-mine workers, and the Bureau in Washington on May 6, 1955. The investigation on which the report is based was made in accordance with action taken at a previous conference in Washington on May 19, 1954, called by Director Forbes to consider what should be done to prevent explosions and fires in coal-drying plants. Scope of Investigation The investigation was planned to obtain information considered essential for properly appraising fire and explosion hazards in different types of coal driers. A questionnaire sent to Bureau personnel provided preliminary information on coal-drying facilities at more than 270 preparation plants. Information on methods used in operating different types of driers, with their furnaces, fans, cyclones, and other auxiliary equipment, was obtained by personal visits or conferences with the operators at 13 plants. Factual data on operating temperatures, composition of the drying gases, air flow, dust loading of the air or gas currents, use of water sprays, auxiliary air controls, and other factors were obtained by conducting full-scale tests at six different plants and making laboratory investigations with samples of dust and gas collected during the tests.

External control of the electrochemical potential of a bed of mineral particles has been investigated by the Bureau of Mines as a method for controlling particle inter-action with organic collectors and thus, flotation response. A cylindrically shaped, 200-to 300-g bed of sulfide mineral particles was used as the working electrode to examine the potential distribution in the bed. The dissolved oxygen concentration of the electrolyte had a significant effect on the potential profile across the mineral bed. Low oxygen levels were necessary to achieve uniform electrochemical potential distributions. Flotation separation of a chalcocite-pyrite mineral mixture by controlled potential was achieved using ethylxanthate, but the flotation behavior of chalcocite and pyrite from the mixture does not follow the flotation behavior of the individual minerals. That is, the presence of another sulfide mineral alters the flotation behavior with ethylxan-thate. Galvanic interaction due to mineral-to-mineral contact between chalcocite and pyrite contributes to differences in the recovery. Chalcocite dissolution products had a deleterious effect on pyrite flotation by activating flotation below -0.1 V (saturated calomel electrode) and depressing flotation above -0.1 V. Pyrite dissolution products had no effect on chalcocite flotation.

Table 55 and figure 19 show the number of fires and fire injuries for stone mills by state during 1990-2001. Table 55 also shows the injury risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays. In all, 118 fires occurred in 33 states. Seventy-six of the fires caused 82 injuries (including 8 fires and 6 injuries involving contractors). The yearly average was 9.8 fires and 6.8 injuries. The Ewhr value was 873 x 106 hr (In = 0.019), and the LWD value was 1,911. Missouri had the most fires (16 fires and 9 injuries), followed by Pennsylvania (15 fires and 14 injuries), Michigan (9 fires and 5 injuries), and Virginia (7 fires and 5 injuries). Of these states, Virginia had the highest injury risk rate value (In = 0.09 1). Table 56, partly illustrated in figure 20, shows the number of fires, fire injuries, risk rates, employees' working hours, and lost workdays by time period. The number of fires and fire injuries decreased during most of the periods, with a sharp increase during the last period. The number of employees' working hours increased throughout the periods. The In values follow patterns similar to those shown by the injury values. Tables 57-63 show the number of fires by ignition source, method of detection and suppression, equipment involved, location, and burning material by time period. Figure 21 shows the major variables related to fires for 1990-2001. Table 63 shows the fire injuries per number of fires causing injuries and total fires by year, ignition source, equipment involved, and location.

[Inquiries are frequently received by the Bureau of Minas relative to occurrence, mining, treatment and utilization of the natural hydrocarbons' such as gilsonite, elaterate, wurtzilite, grahamite, and ozokerite although have been known and used for many years, they are not yet well understood and the amount of recent literature dealing with them as comparatively small. This paper is intended merely to summarize the present knowledge The natural hydrocarbons included in this series are gilsonite, elaterite, wurtzilite, glance pitch, manjak, grahamite, albertite, arid ozokerite and many other minor varieties. With the exception of ozokerite and the other mineral waxes, then all more or less resemble asphalt in that they are dark brown or black bituminous substances of organic origin, generally with a resinous luster. Ozokerite usually light an color with a waxey luster, is closely allied to the others of the series, but is usually considered separately, Unfortunately authorities differ as to nomenclature so that determinations of physical and chemical properties from different sources may riot be readily compared. Abraham Herbert, Asphalts and Allied Substances, 1918, 606 pp. has made one of the most detailed studies of these subjects in recent years, and his classification is used in the main. This is one of a series of papers dealing with mining methods and costs prepared under the sponsorship of end in cooperation with the United States Bureau of Mines. The mining methods described in this paper are those used in one of the large mines producing fluorspar in the Kentucky-Illinois fluorspar field, located in southern Illinois and western Kentucky on the Ohio River. The occurrence of ore and the methods of wining are similar to those in other mines in the district; therefore information regarding methods and the results obtained should be of interest. Improvements in methods have been made as experience developed the need of them. The trine is situated at Rosiclare, Ill., on the Illinois Central Railroad, and shipments are also made b r barge on the Ohio River.

A semiquantitative test for the presence and identification of cesium and rubidium in rocks, clays, and mineral waters has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. The test can be used in the field, as a guide for the prospector, geologist, or mining engineer engaged in location or development [w]ork. It comprises two simple spot tests of a solution prepared from the [m]ineral sample. Phosphomolybdic acid, added to a drop of the test solution, [d]etects cesium, rubidium, and potassium in quantities as low as 60 parts per [m]illion. Silicomolybdic acid, added to a second drop of test solution, enables the operator to distinguish between cesium and/or rubidium and potassium. Test procedures, equipment requirements, and limitations of the method are described in this report. Cesium and rubidium were discovered in 1860 and 1861 by Bunsen and Kirchhoff with a spectroscope. The elements usually occur together, particularly in granite and granitic pegmatites. Rubidium does not occur as an essential constituent of any known mineral, yet it is found as a minor element in so many minerals that rubidium is 16th in abundance in the earth's crust. Cesium, which ranks as the 37th most abundant element, is the principal component of pollucite and a minor element in a wide variety of minerals.

More or less unconsciously and from sheer force of habit human beings do many things they probably would not do if the possible consequences of their acts were fully recognized and appreciated. Such carelessness ordinarily could be condoned if human life were not at stake, but it is difficult to understand why intelligent men engaged in the hazardous occupation of mining indulge with the utmost indifference in some habit or continue some custom in violation of State leas and company regulations and under circumstances that may jeopardize not only their own lives but those of scores, even of hundreds, of their fellow workers as well. The old adage that stolen sweets are the best may or nay not have some foundation, but when applied to the practice of smoking surreptitiously in a coal mine, more especially a gassy mine, it is without even remote justification. Although a relatively harmless habit in the proper environment, smoking has been the cause or suspected cause of many gas explosions and black-powder ignitions and has resulted in numerous instances of bodily injury, loss of life, and destruction of property. Likewise, many fires in both coal and metal nines, causing loss of life, have been started by smoking.

Procedures in which manganese compounds are reduced and the metal is volatilized and selectively condensed, a hitherto neglected area, were investigated. More than 95 percent of the manganese was recovered from high-melting-point ores whether vacuum volatilization or atmospheric pressure volatilization was used, but neither process is economically attractive under present price-cost conditions.

The gas chromatographic method, devised by the Bureau of Mines for analyzing routine mine air samples, was compared with the infrared method used for confirmatory determination of methane in mine air. While maintaining the specificity of the infrared method for methane determination, the gas chromatographic method is more precise, much more rapidly performed, and more convenient.

Commercial uranium metal was electrore fined to a high- purity product using molten- salt electrolytes in an inert atmosphere cell . Electrorefined uranium that contained , after consolidation , less than 30 ppm of metallic impurities was prepared . A method of leaching the electrolyte crystals to remove the salts was developed . Cathode current efficiencies from 90 to 100 percent were obtained . Two molten- salt electrolytes were prepared and evaluated : (1 ) lithium chloride - potassium chloride - uranium trichloride and ( 2 ) sodium chloridepotassium chloride - uranium trichloride . Very little difference was found in the purity of the uranium metal produced in either system . The lithium chloride - potassium chloride - uranium tri - chloride electrolyte was preferable from an operational standpoint .

Colorado coal-mine fatalities, which have gradually decreased since 1914, have shown a marked decline since 1924. Data on coal-mine fatalities in Colorado published by the U. S. Bureau of Mines5 indicate that the deaths per thousand 300-day workers have decreased from 9.13 in 114 to 6.14 in 1926, and that the deaths per million tons produced have decreased from 9.18 in 1914 to 4.98 in 1926. Table 1 gives fatality rates in Colorado and in the United States from 1914 to 1926 inclusive. [ ]
