Heat-capacity measurements were made over the range 8° to 350° K on beryllium sulfate dihydrate and beryllium sulfate tetrahydrate using an adiabatic calorimeter. No anomalies were noted in the curve for either compound. Smooth values of heat capacity, entropy, enthalpy function, and free-energy function were calculated from the heat-capacity data at 10° K intervals and at 273.15° and 298.15° K. The entropy values calculated at 298.15° K were 39.01 ± 0.12 entropy units (eu) for the dihydrate and 55.68 ± 0.17 eu for the tetrahydrate.

A study was made of the feasibility of using washery refuse in the manufacture of lightweight aggregate for building materials . Preliminary caking and burning tests showed that the refuse could be converted into lightweight aggregate but that refuse passing a No. 14 U.S. Standard screen could not be used without additional processing . The aggregate was prepared by pelletizing the refuse and burning out the carbonaceous material on a chain- grate in a refractory - lined furnace . A small stationary - grate furnace was used to study the process variables involved and establish optimum ignition and combustion conditions . Maximum ignition rates were obtained at air rates of approximately 200 lb per sq ft hr , but air rates of 450 or higher were required in the burnout period to obtain temperatures high enough to sinter the ash . The data obtained from this unit were used as a guide in the operation of the chain- grate furnace . In the chain - grate furnace , satisfactory results were obtained by using primary air rates of 200 lb per sq ft hr in the ignition zone and 500 lb per sq ft hr in the burnout zone . The ignition- zone air was preheated to 500 ° F , but the air for burnout was not preheated . A total of 2-1/2 tons of aggregate was prepared in this unit and made into experimental block . A commercial development based upon the results of this study yielded a product which met the ASTM specifications C 130-42 for lightweight aggregate , and blocks made from the aggregate were of good color , durable , and light - inweight .

Seven configurations for panel entries of a longwall coal mine are compared and ranked according to structural stability. These entry configurations are analyzed using three-dimensional finite element modeling The models include large dimensions to minimize boundary effects, elastoplastic constitutive relations, and simulated excavation and construction of support systems. The stability criteria are formulated in a quantitative manner to facilitate the ranking of the entry configurations. These criteria are based on the expected volume of caved rock in the entry openings. The stability ranking is applied to the entry excavation phase, the headgate phase, and the tailate phase of the entry life cycle. Parametric variations are applied using two-dimensional finite element models to determine the sensitivity to changes in mining and design parameters.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a series of tests to compare the cutting forces required by radial and point-attack bits when making similar cuts. Three radial and four point-attack bits were tested in two coal mines using the Bureau's in-seam tester to measure coal-cutting forces in situ. Tests were also conducted to investigate the effects of weathering and cleating. The test results show that in each case, at a specific clearance angle, the radial bits required less tangential and much less normal force than the point-attack bits. The resultant of the cutting forces for some types of cut was 50 pct less at mine 1 for radial cuts compared to cuts with the best point-attack bit, and 40 pct less at mine 2. There was some difference between three types of radial bits, but it was not as significant as the difference between each type of point-attack bit. Cutting coal perpendicular to the cleat planes required less cutting and normal force than the same type of cuts parallel to the cleat planes. Test results showed no effect due to weathering on cutting force data. Cutting parallel increased forces only because cuts were made in the rock band.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing clay and shale mining and crushing methods and costs at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that publication of total production costs may, in many instances, cause embarrassment to the individual operator as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, it is essential to the technical discussion and study of methods employed to consider operating costs. The attention of the reader is specifically called to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scone of the cost tabulations shale ensue. The open-pit recovery of clay and shale is a comparatively simple operation in comparison with underground mining; nevertheless, it represents an appreciable factor in the cost of manufacture.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines investigation was to determine the properties of arc-melted iron-chromium alloys ranging in chromium content from 12 to 50 wt.-pct. Alloys were prepared by consumable-electrode arc melting of electrodes composed of high-purity chromium and high-purity iron. Alloys were fabricated to rod and sheet, and the following data were obtained: Electrical resistivity, hardness, tensile strength, and impact strength at room temperature; and creep-rupture life at 650° C. (1,200° F.). As the chromium content of the annealed alloys varied from 12 to 50 pct., the properties varied as follows: The electrical resistivity increased proportionally from 41 to 53 microhm-cm,; the Rockwell hardness varied from A 38 to A 58; the tensile strength ranged from 52,000 to 96,000 p.s.i.; the impact strength of V-notched charpy specimens varied from 140 to 405 ft.-lb., and the 100-hour creep rupture life at 1,200° F. varied from 5,000 to 16,000 p.s.i.

The western phosphate field, comprising parts of Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Utah, contains one of the world's largest known reserves of phosphate rock. Although phosphate-rock deposits of good-grade have been known since before the turn of the century and production has been recorded since 1906, real development of this important field did not begin until immediately after World War II. Since then fertilizer-manufacturing facilities using western phosphate rock have been expanded, and three electric-furnace plants for producing elemental phosphorus have been installed, resulting in a rise in mine production from 323,955 long tons2/ in 1945 to 1,653,916 long tons3/ in 1953. Interest in the field is increasing, and it is reasonable to expect that the western phosphate industry will continue to expand. Before 1945 all western production was from underground mines. In that year the first strip mine in the field was started near Montpelier, Idaho,~ and in sub-sequent years a number of other open-pit mines were opened in southeast Idaho and western Wyoming. At present the major part of the production comes from surface mines. Underground mining has continued, and new underground mines have been opened in the field, but recent exploration by operating companies has been aimed primarily at developing additional deposits suitable for low-cost surface mining. Preliminary reserve estimates by the Federal Geological Survey5/ indicate that only a very small part of the total resource may be recovered by surface methods and that the industry eventually must depend largely on underground mining. Because one function of the Bureau of Mines is promoting the conservation and development of the Nation's mineral resources, it is appropriate that research be conducted to develop low-cost maximum-recovery underground mining methods applicable to western phosphate-rock deposits.

"INTRODUCTION The highly mechanized character of modern warfare makes steel the most vital raw material. The shortage of steel scrap in the United States is forcing the use of increased quantities of pig iron in steel manufacture, so that the rate of pig-iron output will continue to be the controlling factor in steel production. 5/ At the same time, the construction of new blast furnaces is limited both by time and the amount of strategic material available. Under such circumstances, every effort must be made to attain and then maintain maximum pig-iron output from the equipment now in use.When forcing a blast furnace to the ultimate in production the highest standards for quality and uniformity of the coke must be maintained. In view of these facts, the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Office of the Solid Fuels Coordinator for War, is surveying the coke industry to study the various steps in producing coke of higher quality and greater uniformity. 6/ The engineers conducting the survey are visiting key men in coke-oven and blast-furnace organizations to determine, first, the major and most common problems in coke production and use; and, second, the best and quickest method for solving them. Various operators have made good progress in solving individual problems, and a Nation-wide exchange of information among them will make possible widespread adoption of the best practices. It is the purpose, of the survey and reports such as this preliminary one to facilitate such exchange of information. As an outgrowth of the survey, it was soon revealed that many operators could be helped by cooperation with various Government agencies, particularly to procure suitable coals, minor additions to equipment facilities, and tests on certain properties of coal or coke, or specific advice concerning the operation of various types of equipment. The machinery and organization necessary for securing this cooperation have been set up as a part of this work."

"INTRODUCTION Alunite occurs within a radius of 10 miles of Marysvale, Piute County, Utah, in veins and as replacements of igneous rocks. A number of each type of deposit was explored by the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Geological Survey, under the Strategic Minerals program during 1942. The exploratory work comprised geologic and topographic mapping, diamond drilling,,bulldozer and hand trenching, sinking test pits, rehabilitation of old workings, sampling alunite exposures, and constructing and repairing roads.ACKNOWLEDGNENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits; the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Many of the fatal accidents in coal mines have resulted from the Explosives used in Use of explosives for breaking down the coal. These accidents have resulted both from the use of explo- sives that were not suitable and from the careless or improper use of suitable explosives. Investigation has shown that one of the commonest causes of dis- astrous explosions in the coal mines in this country has been a blown- out shot of black blasting powder or dynamite. The dangers that attend the use of these explosives were perceived several years ago, and in consequence the attention of powder manufacturers was directed to the production of explosives that would be less liable to ignite inflammable gas or dust. The manufacturers have been so successful in their efforts that it is now possible to obtain explosives which yield much shorter and quicker flames than black blasting powder or dynamite, and hence are much less dangerous to use in fiery or dusty coal mines. of explosives. To find out which of the many grades of short-flame explosives Government tests have the qualities that render an explosive most effective and least dangerous for mining coal, the United States Government established a testing station at Pitts- burgh, Pa., in 1908. This station is now under the charge of the Federal Bureau of Mines. Before the station was opened a state- ment of the requirements that the explosives in question would have to satisfy was drawn up and sent to manufacturers. A number of these sent explosives to be tested, and on May 15, 1909, a list of the explosives that had passed the tests was published. Since that date other brands of explosives have been tested and three more lists have been issued. The latest list, published in Miners' Cir- cular 2, Bureau of Mines, contained the names of no less than 71 explosives that had passed the tests prior to January 1, 1911.

The Bureau of Mines is developing melting data for binary combinations of the alkaline earth fluorides and yttria to facilitate the formulation of slag compositions. The present report deals with the SrF2-Y2O3 system for which liquidus and solidus temperatures and solid solubilities were determined. The information is presented as the phase diagram. The phase diagram was constructed from information obtained by ceramogra¬phy, X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, and electron probe microanalysis of small specimens encapsulated in platinum-20 percent rhodium or molybdenum ampoules. The data indicate a simple eutectic system with limited terminal solid solubilities. The eutectic temperature is 1,457°±5° C, and the eutectic composition is 4±1 mole-pct Y203. Strontium fluoride containing up to 2 wt-pct 0 2 was studied to determine the effects of oxygen contamination. Oxygen levels in excess of 0.2 wt-pct resulted in eutectic formation between SrF2 and SrO. The eutectic composition is between 0.2 and 0.7 wt-pct 02, and the eutectic temperature is 1,447°±5° C. No intermediate oxyfluoride phases were detected.

The storage stability characteristics of a diesel type fuel were determined to evaluate the effect of the polar compounds in the fuel. These compounds, comprising most of the nitrogen and oxygen containing compounds and many sulfur containing compounds, were separated from the fuel with a chromatographic column. This fraction was further separated into three polar extracts by graded elution through the column. Each extract was characterized. A storage program using the depolarized fuel, the fuel as received, and blends of the extracts with both fuels, was conducted. Results showed that the removal of the more polar components stabilized the fuel. Blending the polar extracts with the original fuel and with the depolarized fuel in the same ratio as they existed originally and at two and three times the original ratio increased the amount of gum present before storage, but had little effect on the formation of additional gum during storage. Distillate fuels produced by commercial refining of petroleum contain traces of organic nitrogen, sulfur, and oxygen compounds that are more polar4 than the remainder of the fuel. Recent laboratory studies by the Federal Bureau of Mines (1),6 in which these compounds were removed from a fuel, have shown that they influence its storage stability. The objective of this work was to determine the amount of these compounds present in a fuel and their effect upon its stability in storage. To evaluate the role of these polar compounds, it is necessary to remove them from the distillate fuel. Many can be removed by chemical treatment (2), but such treatment precludes reblending the polar components to approximate the original fuel composition. Solvent extraction is free of some of the criticism of chemical treatment, but it is more difficult because of the complex mixture from which compounds must be removed.

For many years Illinois has been one of the leading coal producers in the United States and as such its safety record has compared very well with the other large coal producing States , both in tons produced and millions of man -hours of exposure per fatal accident . ( See Table 25 in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 293. ) During the 10-year period from 1917 to 1926 , inclusive , the average production in the United States per fatal accident was 278 , 109 tons . The aver age for the State of Illinois for the same period was 409,249 tons . Illinois produced 450,464 tons per fatal accident, and in 1928 produced 390,630, tons , or an average of 419,721 tons for the 12- year period from 1917 to 1928 , inclusive . In 1927 During the year 1929 , the shipping mines of the State made a decided improvement in their record over any previous year . Table 1 shows the monthly production and the tons produced per fatal accident . During 1928 and 1929 safety work was actively carried on in Illinois . Safety meetings were held with mine officials , representatives of the State. De partment of Mines , and the United States Bureau of Mines . At these meetings mine hazards and accidents were discussed and remedies suggested for : their elimination in the future . It is believed that first - aid training was to a considerable extent instrumental in reducing accidents and in making the good safety records in Illinois during 1928 and 1929. During these years ( as well as in 1926 and 1927 to a somewhat less extont ) en intensive rirst-aid training campaign was con ducted in Illinois by the officials and members of the United Mine Workers of America , coal companies, State Department of Mines and Minerals , and the U. S. Bureau of Mines , Every first -aid class was made a safety meeting ; where accidents and general safety were discussed freely while teaching first aid. During this time , anproximately 25,000 persons were trained in first aid, and 17 coal companies were issued certificates for having 100 per cent of their employees. trained in first aid. Since January 1 , 1926 , more than 40,000 have received first -aid training in and around Illinois mines , and including those who received training previous to this date , it is believed that at least 90 per cent of the miners in Illinois have received first -aid training . This state ment is based on the fact that the labor turnover in Illinois is not large .

These inspection standard have been prepared for use in the Federal inspection of strip mines producing, bituminous coal, anthracite, and lignite. This circular is a revision of the Safety Code for Strip Mining, which was prepared by the Bureau of Mines and employed as a guide for Federal inspectors. Numerous changes have been made in the original code to keep the in step with improvements in the industry. With continuing changes in mining methods and facilities some of these standards may become inapplicable and further revision may be advisable. Therefore, questions regarding these standards, and suggestions regarding new standards should be brought to the attention of the Bureau of Mines. Few States haves laws pertaining to strip mines, but where such laws do exist it is possible that some of the standards may conflict with them. In cases of conflict, the intent is not to advocate noncompliance with State laws, but to suggest reconsideration of such laws or safety orders.

"It is well known that prevalence and severity of coal worker's pneumoconiosis (CWP) differ markedly in different regions and mines despite comparable exposures. These variations in the pathogenicity of different coal mine dusts can only partially be explained by the mineral composition of the coal mine dust and the rank of coal. Laboratory studies also do not correlate with the human experience. One major difference between human exposure and laboratory studies is that the coal miner breathes dust from freshly broken coal, while the animals or cells are exposed to stale dust. In an effort to find biochemical clues for resolving this apparent paradox, we have carried experiments to detect differences in chemical reactivities of fresh versus stale coal dust from several U.S. coal mines. Electron spin resonance (ESR) was used as a technique for the direct detection of the concentration and reactivity of free radicals. ESR measurements of freshly ground coal dusts of different ranks and composition showed significant differences in the amount and reactivities of the organic free radicals produced. The half-lives and reactivity patterns of these newly formed species of free radicals seem to correlate with the expected toxicity and pathogenicity of the dust, thereby, providing new clues to the biochemical mechanisms and pathogenesis of CWP. Similar detection of free radicals in freshly crushed quartz suggest that free radicals might play a significant role in the pathogenicity of quartz in causing fibrosis and eventually silicosis.IntroductionThe pathogenesis of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP) has been an important topic of concern for decades, but the mechanism of CWP is still not understood. This paper describing the operations of the Cresson mine of the Cresson Consolidated Gold Mining & Milling Co. at Cripple Creek, Colorado, is one of a series of papers on mining methods and costs being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines. The Cresson has recently been the most, important mine in the Cripple Creed district. During 1932 and 1933 an average of 230 tons of new ore (excluding dump material) that averaged about $10 in gold was shipped daily; 150 to 175 men were employed. Stoping was by the shrinkage method exclusively. The ore was screened washed, and hand-sorted at the surface and shipped to the Golden Cycle mill at Colorado Springs for treatment. A considerable proportion of the production was made by lessees working under the so-called "split-check" system. The authors are indebted to the management of the Cresson Consolidated Gold Mining & Milling Co. for permission to publish this paper.

In the course of an investigation3 of the flow of gases through beds of broken solids the author obtained a number of data .on the specific volume of beds of broken solids of variously mixed sizes. A mathematical theory of the limiting conditions has been developed and some generalizations have been made for intermediate cases. A more definite knowledge of the relation between space occupied and size composition would be valuable to all those who are handling large quantities of broken materials. Such knowledge might be advantageously applied to the operation of a coke oven. For example, the output of the oven depends in general upon the number of pounds of coal which can be put in the oven at charging. It is known that the capacity of one battery of ovens was increased several per cent by slightly increasing the proportion of fine material in the charge.

Laboratory tests on three commercial methane detectors, two combustion-type detectors and one interferometer-type detector, were made by the Bureau of Mines to determine their response to certain single and multiple flammable gases mixed with normal and abnormal air atmospheres. Although both types of detectors responded accurately to methane-normal air mixtures, they did not show correct concentrations for other single flammable gases in air. Uniquely, the response of the interferometer-type detector to hydrogen was in a negative direction. The effects of individual gases in multiple flammable gas mixtures were approximately additive. In oxygen-deficient atmospheres the methane response of the interferometer-type detector erred on the high side, but only in very low oxygen concentrations were the combustion-type detectors affected-showing low, erratic methane readings.
