Maintaining a continuous mining process during thunderstorms is one of the primary challenges in Peru's open-pit mines. Safety protocols necessitate the establishment of exclusion zones to minimize the risks of unplanned detonations. During such conditions, loading and hauling equipment must be relocated or, in the worst case, halted, directly affecting productivity (t/h). Implementing a wireless initiation system mitigates the risk of unplanned detonations during electrical storms by eliminating the use of electrical cables that are susceptible to electrical discharge. This study documents the implementation of this system in a copper mine located over 3,500 meters above sea level in Peru, where electrical storms between December and March necessitate modifications to blasting schedules and limit the number of drills fired per event. Through a test using wireless detonators, a key performance indicator (KPI) was established to ensure safe and continuous operation during thunderstorms. The results were significant: 20 blasts were successfully executed, firing approximately 5,000 holes and moving around 10 million tons of material, all without safety incidents or critical operational deviations, achieving zero misfires and no scheduled blast suspensions. Shovels SH001 (ore) and SH002 (waste) continued to operate together for an additional 100 hours continuously during thunderstorms, generating a potential saving of USD 3.3 million by continuously sending ore to the plant during the testing period under stormy conditions. Additionally, the blasting initiation time was reduced by 25%, eliminating two activities that involved the use of surface connection cables. This reduction led to over 150 hours of decreased personnel exposure to interactions with vehicles and environmental hazards such as dust and noise. Furthermore, the number of holes fired in a single event increased by 50%, enhancing the blast tonnage capacity and reducing equipment stops due to evacuation and reentry from two to one.

The Worsey-Silva equation determines the optimal row timing for the smallest fragmentation and allows fragmentation models to be adjusted due to row timing. The equation utilizes the concept of dynamic confinement to determine when the best time to fire the next row or sequence series would be if the smallest fragmentation is desired. Full-scale testing was conducted at an aggregate quarry in Ontario to support the theory and equation. The full-scale testing comprised six (6) blasts, two (2) different contractors, and three (3) different sequences. The test parameters were kept consistent, besides changing the timing between sequential charges to explore the timing sequence’s influences on fragmentation. From this research, the theory of dynamic confinement relating to row timing was discovered, and the equation to determine the optimal timing for the smallest fragmentation was derived. An equation to adjust fragmentation based on row timing was derived from the full-scale testing and literature review. The Worsey-Silva equation can be used with other fragmentation models as it takes the fragmentation results from the other models and adjusts them based on the row timing used. The DOE is evaluating Yucca Mountain, Nevada as a potential site for disposal of high level nuclear waste. Yucca Mountain is located approximately 160 km northwest of Las Vegas on the western edge of the Nevada Test Site and the Nellis Air Force Range. An exploratory tunnel has been constructed through Yucca Mountain for site characterization. A controlled drilling and blasting technique, smooth wall blasting, was used to excavate the TBM starter tunnel and alcoves off the main tunnel to provide areas for scientific investigation. Fundamental to the blasting program has been the use of two blast design equations used in concert to minimize blast damage to the surrounding rock mass. The first of these equations was developed by Roger Holmberg and estimates near-field peak particle velocity that is the basis for minimizing blast damage to the host rock. The second of these equations was developed by B. H. Sanden and provides bore hole pressure estimation which allows controls to minimize crushing of the rock mass along the perimeter yet allowing enough force to create tensile failure between perimeter bore holes. This is key to the smooth wall blasting technique. To date, essentially the same controlled drilling and blasting program has been in place for all excavation requiring controlled drilling and blasting at the ESF. The controlled drilling and blasting program uses an iterative process to achieve continuous improvement in the blast rounds. This involves interaction between Architect and Engineer (A/E), Constructor, and Testing Coordination O&e (TCO) to ensure each blast round successfully meets the expectations of affected participants. The A/E requested that the TCO provide validation of the near-field peak particle velocity estimation under the Construction Monitoring Program. Data gathered under this program were reduced by statistical analysis and used to verify blast design parameters and provide a site specific blast damage relationship.

"The economy profits from the rock excavated in mines and quarries and the excavations required for the construction of roads and buildings. However such excavations are achieved by blasting withexplosives, and explosions create fly rock and vibrations which in some cases may throw rock far intoinhabited regions and may vibrate buildings excessively in these regions. An article presented at the 2015 ISEE (reference 1) explains how unacceptable vibrations can be avoided, while the present article explains why dangerous fly rock occurs and how it can be avoided. The article shows by rigorous calculations with the blast simulator Blaspa that long range fly rock can be due to short collar or short burden, but mainly it explains how inadequate blasting that allows the floor to rise can cause even further reaching fly rock, a situation not usually recognized by most blasters."

Low density explosives have been available in various forms for nearly 20 years. These initially consisted of various diluted forms of ANFO formulated to slow the rate of reaction. One such product that was developed was a blend of ammonium nitrate and rubber. This product uses a coarse fuel provided by granulated rubber to slow the reaction rate of the explosive rather than being a diluted form of ANFO. There has always been a technical difficulty in blending two dissimilar materials without subsequent segregation.

The early miners and their mules always had the challenge of transporting unstable dynamite underground. The modern pumpable explosives, whilst far safer, still present a major logistics challenge for the mobile charging units (MCU). The challenge today is the efficient explosive delivery into declines, ramps, and vertical shafts, often requiring the MCUs to travel excess distances up and down to surface to re-load. Alternatively, the management of cassettes or ISO containers is utilized to deliver the pumpable base emulsion to the MCUs at the working face. Additionally, local laws and regulations regarding shaft clearance further compound the task and result in pausing other operations in the shaft or decline or ramp until the completion of the explosive transport. This paper examines the research & development challenges of dropping base emulsion down a vertical pipe to depths in excess of 1000 m (3280 ft.), either to an underground storage or directly into the MCU, depending on the depth. The boreholes (with pipes) are drilled in close proximity to the underground work areas. The paper also discusses the rheology of the emulsion within these vertical pipes as well as the economic benefits of such an innovative system. The learnings gained from this work, along with examples demonstrating the significant reduction in MCU travel and the safety benefits, are presented for the industry to consider moving forward.

Most of the current explosives for mining blasting activities rely on voids to become sensitive to initiation, then detonating and finally, sustaining that detonation. The use of voids is known as hot spot sensitisation. Various forms of voids serve as hot spots – gas bubbles (predominantly in bulk explosives), glass (or plastic microballoons, for packaged products), or expanded polystyrene (bulk explosives). Gas bubble sensitisation uses the decomposition of sodium nitrite to produce nitrogen gas bubbles, which are dispersed throughout the bulk explosion. These gas bubbles, when hit by a shock wave (such as from a booster), compress and heat up, subsequently decomposing the explosive and releasing energy to sustain the detonation. It has been suggested that the use of different types of gases to create voids in non-ideal explosives could offer some alternatives to the sensitisation process, which could be reflected in the change of the detonation properties of the explosive. The reason would be that each gas has a different ratio of specific heats (=/), and when these gas bubbles are compressed, they will heat up to different temperature, affecting the decomposition of the explosive and thus, the VOD.

To save time for construction of coal pits, the contractor decided to combine erection of the tower pitheads with digging of skip shafts to the depth necessary for placing proper coal pit equipment. It was obvious that blasts used in shaft faces and lifting machines installed at a lower part of the pithead could excite vibrations of an upper part of the pithead with curing concrete. The contractor was concerned about vibrations of pithead concrete structures and the disturbance of freshly poured concrete in forms at a top of the pithead as a consequence of structure vibrations. The results of a study of the tower pithead structure vibrations from blasting and operating machinery, and effects of structural vibrations on curing concrete are presented. Structural vibrations were measured at the tower pitheads of two coal pits from twelve blasts. Records of horizontal and vertical displacements were superposition of harmonic low-frequency damped vibrations and sporadic high-frequency damped vibrations with a variable frequency. Low frequency vibrations attenuated during 8-13 s after the last delayed blast. Measured values of the natural frequencies of pithead horizontal vibrations coincided with the calculated frequencies of horizontal bend vibrations. An increase of a face depth from 18 to 50 m diminished 16 times horizontal bending vibration displacements of concrete structures. Measurements of vertical structural vibrations from blasting demonstrated increasing of vertical pithead displacements with the rising of structure elevations. This is evidence of the pithead longitudinal tension. The holes with charges were not properly condensed for one blast. As a result of incompact stemming, the blast substantially increased the energy of airborne pressure waves, which triggered natural vertical vibrations of the pithead with high displacements.
