Avalanches are commonly mitigated through the use of explosives at ski resorts and above transportation corridors. Surprisingly, very little research has been conducted on snowpack response to explosive inputs, and efforts to model this response have been limited. The purpose of this ongoing research project is to ascertain an understanding of the dynamic snowpack response in relation to explosive size and height above the snowpack, coupled with snow conditions, to enhance avalanche control. A system of sensors and computer-controlled data acquisition components has been created to record the movement of snow resulting from the charge detonation. The system records acceleration vertically and radially within the snowpack at two distances from the point of detonation as well as blast air pressure at one location during explosive events. The data at two locations allows inferences to be made about the transmittance and attenuation of shock waves through the snowpack radially as well as vertically. The data shows that raising charges above the surface results in increased snowpack dynamic response when compared to surface detonations. Applying power function regression to accelerations for individual charge elevations, it was determined that both radial and vertical rates of attenuation were not dependant on charge elevation. Additionally, raising the charge also resulted in increased dynamic response at depth within the snowpack

For assessing the safety of structures during underground explosions, ground particle velocity gives the best damage criteria, and 100 mm/see of ground particle velocity has been internationally accepted as the threshold value of safety (no damage). Results of extensive controlled underground explosion experiments conducted by the author to study the effects of ground vibrations on specially prepared concrete blocks, and also on low rise buildings and dams showed that no damage normally occurred when ground particle velocities were less than 100 mm/sec. Analysis of a large number of accelerograms from a dam site in India also indicated that no damage occurred to normal structures when integrated ground particle velocities were less than 100 mm/sec. Major damage in well built structures like a dam was noticed for ground particle velocity as high as about 350 mm/sec. These results are also generally substantiated from damage data obtained for various structures during other earthquakes, including Elcentro (1940), Taft (1952), Parkfield (1965), and San Fernando (1971). These studies, therefore, suggest that the damage criteria during underground explosions and earthquakes are similar; and 100 mm/see of ground particle velocity seems to be the general threshold value of safety (no damage) against ground vibrations.

Shaped charges are being utilized in defense applications against a wider variety of targets including concrete, rock, and soil. This work was motivated by a heightened interest in characterizing the effect of shaped charge attack on brittle, non-homogenous materials, in particular, concrete damage and penetration predictions resulting from a TOW-2a conical shaped charge (CSC). This paper presents a multi-stage approach for accurately predicting the high explosive detonation and subsequent jet formation due to the collapse of shaped charge liner, the changes in jet length and diameter as a function of standoff distance, and the jet-target impact dynamics. The first part of the analysis approach employs the commercial 3-D Eulerian-Lagrangian hydro-code AUTODYN to predict the shaped charge jet formation. 2-D finite difference Eulerian subgrids represent the explosive and casings components, while thin components like the liner are modeled with Shell subgrids. The Pugh, Eichelberger & Rostoker (PER) jetting theory option is invoked to obtain the jet and slug masses and associated velocities. The jetting data is post processed where the jet velocity gradient and jet mass is used to solve for the new jet length and diameter gradient at a desired standoff. The final computation involves a 2-D fully Lagrangian model in which the jet and velocity gradient is represented by a string of Lagrangian segments and the concrete target is defined as Lagrangian with the newly developed RHT (Riedel, Hiermaier, Thoma) constitutive model. This model has a third invariant dependency that accounts for failure mechanisms in brittle materials.

In order to manage blast vibration in soft ground containing large diameter holes and large charge weights, a number of issues must be considered. This paper describes techniques to control and reduce near-field blast vibrations absorbed by highwalls in soft ground. Sympathetic detonations need to be controlled. Sympathetic detonations can cause excessive vibration due to an unknown number of charge weights firing out of sequence. The excessive vibration can cause damage to the ground. Sympathetic detonations can be controlled through proper design of blast patterns and, in some cases, through the use of specialized electronic detonators.

The use of explosives to safely fell structures can be traced back over 300 years. Since then, dozens of chemists, inventors, blasters and demolition experts worldwide have played prominent roles in the evolution of what has become the modern-day explosive demolition industry. In America, one of the earliest applications of explosive demolition occurred in response to the great fires of San Francisco, where homes and businesses were blasted with gunpowder in a desperate attempt to create firewalls. Later in the 19th century, inventions such as nitroglycerine, dynamite and blasting caps made structural blasting a safe, efficient alternative to conventional demolition methods. The 20th century brought the first experiments in shaped charge technology, and this, combined with developments in portable seismology and non-electric delay systems, allowed an ever-expanding variety of structures to be explosively felled by demolition experts throughout the country. The 1950s and .60s brought a new wave of commercial structural-blasting entrepreneurs (several of whom are still active today), and their efforts towards improving adjacent-structure protection and public relations beget the felling of large commercial buildings in dense urban environments. By the late 1980s, publicity-driven motives were gaining greater influence in the decision to .implode. various structures, and the transformation of blasting operations into promotional spectator events played a role in several injuries and fatalities. Since that time, however, a renewed sense of responsibility practiced by most blasting firms and project officials has resulted in the safe, successful completion of hundreds of recent endeavors. In sum, what appears today as an efficient, economical - and visually spectacular - way to demolish structures has its roots in developments of the past several centuries

Explosives techniques and technology are constantly evolving and improving, yet basic communication and business skills are not being used regularly. Many potential blasting projects never occur due to simplistic, basic factors, such as a lack of communication. Articulate communication is the key component in the blast approval process, which has changed remarkably from how business was conducted fifty years ago. Imperative to the approval process is communication outlining the safety and benefits of the blasting project. Information and transparency with the stakeholders and the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) will greatly improve the chances of having a blasting project approved. This open communication starts at the inception of the project when the memorandum of understanding (MOU) is obtained, and involves the AHJ through all steps of the approval process. The blasting industry and regulators must work collaboratively to improve safety, security, regulations and licensing. Implementing state of the art blasting techniques, security, safety measures, vibration monitoring and strict licensing allows the AHJ and all stakeholders to remain integrated and informed, contributing to process approval. Regulatory operators should strive to achieve success thru communication, cooperation and compliance which is accomplished thru continued education and transparency. These steps, combined with regular meetings, has proven to be a benefit to both industry and regulators. Relationships are built through trust, teamwork, transparency and communication –including the take holders and AHJ in the approval process from the inception solidifies these relationships and improves teamwork

At the Yanacocha gold mine, in the Andes of northern Perú, the first instrumental tests were carried out in October 2019 to detect the initiation sequence of a production blast by detecting the EMF signal produced by the detonation from each blast hole in the sequence. Several experimental tests were carried out to choose the correct antenna and find the best setup of the high-speed Data Acquisition device (DAD) to detect these electromagnetic waves. Finally, the first measurement was obtained. With the instrument recording at a rate of 1 million samples per second, the initiation sequence was detected with 99.5% accuracy. It was found that it corresponded, without a doubt, to the designed scheme. The main result is that these tests provide us with a method and instrumentation to verify if the planned initiation sequence is carried out correctly in the field. In this way we can find operational deviations and detect possible misfires. This method has proven to be accurate, fast and easy to implement, mainly requiring an EMF signal capture equipment that can record at very high speed, something that is increasingly easier to satisfy with the development of microcontrollers. On the other hand, the type of antennas used in this method are low cost and very commercial. These tests have improved our understanding of the nature of detonation and have marked a new milestone in the development of blasting instrumentation in Peru.

Ammonium nitrate in explosives and sulfides in reactive ground have the potential to react at ambient and elevated temperatures resulting in premature detonations. The Australasian Explosives Industry Safety Group (AEISG) published, in 2006, a Code of Practice1 for elevated temperature and reactive ground. This paper reviews the chemistry, general reactivity of various ground types, elevated temperature hazards, and testing protocols contained in the code, that are industry best practices for managing ammonium nitrate-based explosives in elevated temperature and reactive ground conditions. In addition to reviewing the 5th edition AEISG Code of Practice, data is presented validating the recommended sampling guidelines within the code. Dyno Nobel has been screening reactive ground samples and performing sleep time testing since the code of practice was first released. Test results demonstrate the effects of samples that are allowed to oxidize before testing and are shown to be subsequently less reactive and not representative of the actual hazards facing mining blasting operations. Results also show that for a given reactive ground sample, reaction times decrease with increasing temperature. Data also quantify the delay in reaction time given by inhibited products. These results emphasize the importance of proper sampling and preparation of samples to accurately characterize elevated temperature and reactive ground hazards. They also demonstrate the efficacy of inhibited products in managing these hazards

The ability to fire multiple blasts simultaneously can provide significant benefits to any open pit mining operation. Reduced blast-related downtime by reducing blast events can increase equipment utilization and maximize material movement. Significant sequencing benefits can also be delivered, associated with reduced equipment relocation. This paper describes the work completed in partnership between Orica and Oyu Tolgoi to successfully demonstrate that combined production-trim and midsplit blasting could be implemented successfully while successfully managing the risk of increased damage to the final walls. The paper details the methodology used to assess key performance measures linked to final wall damage and compares the performance between the following blasting methods. • Free face trim blasting vs. combined production-trim blasting • Presplit blasting vs. midsplit blasting. The results of the initial trial blasts are presented, along with the method agreed by the key site stakeholders for ongoing application. The method used to keep the risk of final wall damage to an acceptable level is explained, along with the benefits delivered to Oyu Tolgoi operations associated with the initial 12 months of application.

Limitations on allowable levels of vibration from construction activities generally consider either annoyance or damage. While activities such as drilling and roller compaction primarily create annoyance, the major concern for blasting is usually damage. Many years of research have developed correlations between peak particle velocity and either threshold or structural damage. We emphasize the term “correlation” for two reasons. First, peak particle velocity is only a single-valued representation of a vibration waveform, and does not characterize it completely. Second, a given peak particle velocity by itself, even a particle velocity waveform, will not damage anything – strain does. Why not measure strain all the time? Strain is very localized, and can vary substantially over short distances, so choosing the appropriate strain measurement can be difficult. Measurement of strain is appropriate when either the behavior of a specific structural element is needed, or the overall response of a structure can be adequately represented by a well-selected strain measurement. We will discuss the appropriateness of both particle velocity and strain as deformation and damage descriptors, in general. We will also describe a specific case history, from a tunnel project in New Jersey, correlating strain with peak particle velocity. Finally, we will make recommendations for the choice of measurement type for some common situations.

The paper is part of the ongoing work of the Environmental committee of EFEE. To assist the European experts working with explosives one of the aims is to improve the common knowledge of similarities and differences between national legislation, standards or guidelines on vibration monitoring and other environmental monitoring during blasting in Europe and abroad. This has been done by use of an online survey through the most of 2018. Questions have been raised on vibration monitoring during blasting. The existence of norms, guidelines or standards and how they are used. Even though the questions have been kept at a high level they are formed to try to map the different national standards use of such things as frequency, guidance on monitoring position, distinction between different types of structures, requirement to the equipment and more. Furthermore a few initial questions have been raised on other environmental monitoring relevant for blasting. The respondents are national, cooperate or individual members of EFEE. The answers are experts in the use of explosives and vibration-monitoring in their respective countries. More than 60 have answered the questionnaire from 29 different countries. Mainly European as well as other nations including India, Israel, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, UAE, USA, Greenland and Hong Kong. By analysing the incoming answers, the differences and similarities in vibration monitoring of the respondents has been clarified and mapped. Where possible other environmental monitoring has also been analysed. Where needed the different guidelines, standards and regulations have been visited to verify the answers and further elaborate on the comparison.

Previous researchers have put forward two different theories as to the origin of air overpressure from quarry blasting. In 1980, Siskind et al postulated that the initial face movement gave rise to the displacement of air and that this resulted in the air overpressure pulse. However in 1990 McKenzie et al carried out research that indicated that the air overpressure pulse came into being as consequence of the shock wave created by the detention of the explosive charge in a blast hole, rapidly propagating through the rock and then impacting on the quarry face.

This paper presents a fragmentation model for large production blasts. The model uses peak particle velocity (PPV) induced from the blast as a controlling parameter to predict the fragmentation size distribution. The PPV can be related to shock pressure or strain under a given rock condition. The fragmentation size is calculated at three-dimensional grid points within the blast volume. The grid size defines the calculation resolution of the model. The fragment size distribution is assumed to be in the same form as the crack distribution within a cube (of the size equals to the grid size) surrounding a grid point. The crack distribution in rock from impact is based on the finding from previous researchers (Seaman et al., 1976). The fines and oversized blocks are calculated explicitly. The summation of the size distribution at all calculation grid points over a specified volume of the blast yields an overall size distribution for the volume.

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate a method of delaying and loading a shot. Since entering the construction industry, I have learned that cover is needed on a lot of blasts. When in close having to cover shots was new to me and it seemed time consuming and wastefull. Until I really needed it and didn’t have it. So What To Do??? Remember that safety comes first, if you have concerns cover it. Even if you have to sit on your shot all night to wait for cover. This method is not a replacement for cover, but it will help keep your rock down. Do not bet your life, others lives or your career on it.

There is an intuitive tendency to equate rock strength with rock stability, yet the two must be evaluated separately. A slope in strong hard rock is not necessarily stable, nor is a slope in weathered weak rock necessarily unstable. In some cases the reverse is true, depending on the geometry of joints and weak planes. The time element is a matter of special concern, that is how suddenly the failure begins and how rapidly it progresses. Sudden failures can be catastrophic, whereas creep usually is not. In soils and weathered rock, the process is usually incremental and is more likely to give some warning of impending failure. With careful observation, the failure process in these materials can be detected and monitored instrumentally or visually. In some cases, the slope may be stabilized, reinforced or modified. When that is not possible, there is usually enough time on this type of slope to remove men and equipment from the area before complete failure occurs.
