"The long-term studies on development of the technology for precious metals recovery using activated carbons executed by Irkutsk Research Institute of Precious and Rare Metals and Diamonds (IRGIREDMET) were finished by successful introduction of ""Carbon-In-Pulp"" process in Russia (1984).The review of some studies, accompanied by development, testing, introduction and subsequent improvement of considered technology, carried out by IRGIREDMET is submitted in this paper.The basic regularities of gold and silver adsorption onto activated carbons from cyanide, thiourea, chloride and other solutions are investigated using various phisical-and-chemical methods ( X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Voltammetry, X-ray microanalysis etc.). Using voltammetry it was found that gold cyanide is adsorbed onto activated carbon without chemical changes and partial reduction of gold is possible only during drying of carbon samples before analysis. Metallic gold and silver may be dissolved in boiling cyanide solution at argon atmosphere when they are in contact with activated carbon surface. Gold adsorption mechanism for activated carbons has great differences from that for the ion exchange resins. So the most probable mechanism for gold adsorption from cyanide solution is adsorption of neutral molecules Me n+[Au(CN)2-]n.X-ray quantitative microanalysis technique was developed to investigate gold adsorption kinetics onto spherical activated carbon. Gold profiles in granules of activated carbon for various adsorption conditions were tested (carbon particle size, mixing efficiency, adsorption time etc.). Mathematical methods were used to determine gold diffusion coefficient within activated carbon granule.The properties of various types domestic and foreign activated carbons were tested and the demands to activated carbons suitable for gold extraction were determined. As a result foreign and Russian activated carbons AG-90, AG-95 were recommended for use at Russian gold plants. Domestic adsorbents are cheaper in comparison with foreign activated carbons. The methods to restore carbon adsorption activity including acid treatment and thermal reactivation were tested and implemented."

"The minerals industry is being challenged to reduce the amount of virgin ore that is mined, and to replace this material through the recycling of used commodity items and scrap, or by the reprocessing of waste materials. It is argued here that the existing technology base of minerals processing and refining offers real potential for handling these secondary resources. The challenge is to develop tools by which the most preferable recycling routes (both economically and environmentally) can be identified from a list of feasible alternatives, taking into account any operational constraints of these technologies.This paper describes an heuristic approach to developing the family of all technically feasible flowsheets to address this challenge, from which a preferred option may be selected according to a set of decision criteria (economic and environmental). Our approach uses conventional flowsheeting techniques of selecting flow variables and splitter functions, supported by design performance information for each unit operation. This set of design decision variables is augmented by knowledge of the suitability of a particular waste or scrap stream for a given unit operation within a flowsheet. We achieve this by comparing the composition of the scrap stream with the range of mineral streams for which the unit operation was designed initially. This is inspired by the “overlap” approach proposed by Legarth, where an “overlap” of 1 would suggest that there is high degree of compatibility between a given secondary resource stream and a primary mineral stream as inputs to a specific technology. The “overlap” concept has been extended to include information about the physical characteristics of secondary resource streams, as well as information relating to synergistic / antagonistic influences of minor elements present in the waste stream. A flowsheet which delivers a product of acceptable quality from a given secondary resource material is built up from a progression of unit technologies. The exercise is repeated to generate the family of all feasible flowsheets from combinations of acceptable unit technologies."

"Battery grade Mn ore is not found in India except in Dongri-Buzurg Mine, Dist. Bhandara, Maharashtra. The mine located in central India is operated by a premier company viz. Manganese Ore India Ltd., under Central Government Public Sector Undertaking. The company is not selling the product as battery grade material but instead primarily catering to the needs of the iron and steel industry in the country. However, a part of the ore is being used in-house for the production of electrolytic manganese-dioxide in their EMD plant, which is located near the mine.The production of lumpy ore for steel industries generated through multi-stage crushing and screening has resulted in accumulation of about 50,000 tonnes of low grade fines over the year, which contain low of Mn values. Further, the generation of fines is still on going process due to the production of lumpy ores. These fines are stacked in the form of unconsolidated dumps, which create environmental problems like air and water pollution and siltation in the adjoining fields. Besides they are occupying large space, which is scarce in this mining area. The Indian Bureau of Mines under one of its statutory functions has suggested the company to explore the possibility of recovery of additional values under conservation and environmental aspects. Hence the company has sponsored a bulk sample for beneficiation studies in the Modern Mineral Processing Laboratory and Pilot Plant of Indian Bureau of Mines at Nagpur, India. The main manganese minerals present in these mine rejects have been identified as pyrolusite and psilomelane. The purpose of this study was to explore the possibility of evolving a suitable beneficiation flowsheet to obtain manganese concentrates assaying over 72% MnO2 to be used as raw material for the manufacturing of dry cell batteries."

The estimated reserve of the phosphatic soils at the Sukulu hills region of Uganda upto a depth of 60 meters is of the order of 200 million tonnes and analyses 10-12% P2O5. A 5-tonne sample of the phosphatic soil was received at the National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML), India for beneficiation studies. The ore occurred as a naturally degraded soil deposit and the slime contained earthy lateritic minerals which made it extremely sticky. Microscopic examination revealed the presence of limonite, magnetite (martitised), hematite and goethite as major minerals along with apatite and quartz. Presence of clay was indicated by earthy smell on moistening the sample. It was observed that getting rid of the slime was as important for adequate beneficiation of the ore, as it was difficult. Earlier studies on samples of the same ore at the NML and abroad established that it was necessary to pass the ore through a series of three stages of desliming, each consisting of a step of rigorous attrition scrubbing followed by hydrocycloning, for effective elimination of the sticky slimy coating which stubbornly adhered to mineral grains. Studies were carried out at the NML in two phases to develop a flowsheet for beneficiation of the phosphatic soil. In the first phase, reproducibility of the results obtained by employing a flowsheet developed abroad was confirmed along with suggesting some modifications of the flowsheet. Then 200 kg. of concentrate was produced following the recommended flowsheet for evaluation of its suitability for production of fertilisers. To remove the limonitic slimy coating, which stubbornly adheres to the other mineral grains, it was necessary to subject the ROM ore, after screening out the +840 micron size fraction which contained only 1.75% P2O5 , to three stages of hydrocycloning each preceded by attrition scrubbing. Then only conventional beneficiation techniques could be effectively employed to upgrade the ore.

"An interesting occurrence of gold bearing ores of economic interest has recently been discovered in the Serrenti- Furtei district, central-southern Sardinia (Italy). The upper part of the orebodies are leaner and fairly porous, and are undergoing intense oxidation processes. In the lower parts sulphide ores predominate, chiefly enargite-luzonite and pyrite and these have a more compact structure. The passage from the oxidized to the sulphide zones, is rather irregular and difficult to delineate. The gold, generally occurring in its native form, is found in small grains. Mineral reserves in the area concerned were originally estimated to total 2.77 Mt: 0.63 Mt of oxide minerals with average gold content of 2.75 g/t and 2.14 Mt of sulphide ores with average gold grade of 3.18 g/t.Recovery of the valuable metals is a complex problem.The effectiveness of a variety of gold extraction techniques has been evaluated conducting tests on batches of ore representative of the different orebody depths obtained from core samples.The techniques investigated were: heap and vat leaching; flotation and flotation followed by leaching of the flotation tailings. The findings indicate that:• the gold contained in the ores in the upper oxidized zones of the deposit can be efficiently recovered by direct cyanidation via heap or vat leaching;• the sulphide ores in the deeper portions, that are not amenable to direct cyanidation but contain enargite concentrations of potential economic interest can be processed by means of flotation to produce a gold/copper bulk concentrate;• beneficiation of the difficult-to-treat minerals contained in the transition zone requires some knowledge of their intrinsic properties. A distinction should be made between the ores containing minor amounts of enargite which appear to be amenable to vat leaching and those with relatively higher enargite content which are processed using bulk flotation of the gold and copper minerals followed by vat leaching of the resultant tailings."

"INTRODUCTIONThis paper describes the inseparable relation between product design, liberation, and metallurgical recovery in the optimisation of the recycling of passenger vehicles. This is illustrated by the use of an optimisation model that uses among others a material combination matrix based on metallurgical process data, which depicts the consequences of the quality of intermediate recycling products on the metallurgical material recovery and final alloy metal quality. Various simulations will illustrate the effect of changes in product design and hence liberation on the recycling of end-of-life vehicles. Although this paper focuses on cars, the discussion is equally valid for any end-of-life product. Calibration of the model will be discussed with reference to experiments carried out in order to study the optimal recovery of aluminium applications used in passenger vehicles.OPTIMISATION MODEL FOR LINKING DESIGN TO RECYCLINGImproving the efficiency of the material cycle of the car is essential to ensure a sustainable development of our society as well as e.g. to comply with the recycling targets imposed by EU legislation. In the design of the car various materials are combined and connected in many different ways, making up the complex 'mineralogy' of the car and its components, which is changing rapidly and continuously over time. The liberation of materials during shredding plays an important role in the composition (and quality) of the intermediate recycling streams. In order to include the influence of product design (mineralogy), liberation, and particle composition (quality of the intermediate recycling streams) in the optimisation of the recycling of end-of-life vehicles, a systems engineering tool for optimisation of the recycling of end-of-life vehicles was developed, including a liberation model. The optimisation model predicts the recovery rate as a function of product design (in this case a car), liberation, efficiency of the different process steps, economy and legislation based on a developed recycling flow sheet for end-of-life vehicles. Optimisation can only be achieved through the combination of the knowledge areas of product design, shredding, mechanical separation technology linked to pyro- and hydrometallurgy, composing a complex interconnected network of unit operations."

"Chromite ore is an indispensable raw material in the manufacture of ferro-chrome and charge-chrome, which are used for the production of stainless and other alloy steels. The demand for chromite ore is ever increasing because of increasing consumption of these steels. Keeping this in view, Tata Steel is keen to recover values from fines and wastes, and also to produce value added products from their captive chromite mines and its processing plants.Tata Steel has its captive chromite resources at Sukinda, Orissa. They contain two ore types, i.e. (i) Ferruginous and (ii) Siliceous. The generation of off-grade ores is an increasing trend and simultaneously customer quality requirements are becoming ever more stringent. The ferruginous type ore also contains a considerable quantity of in-situ fines (~20% particles below 0.5 mm) that compound the beneficiation problem.In many places, in India and abroad, mined non-marketable off-grade and low grade chromite ores are upgraded by using either simple classification techniques like screw classification, hydrosizing, hydrocycloning or conventional gravity concentration processes such as Heavy media separation, Jigging, Spiraling, Tabling etc.At Tata Steel, the ferruginous type ores are treated in Chrome Ore Beneficiation (COB) Plant that comprises: a crushing and grinding circuit; a classification circuit using hydrocyclones; and a beneficiation circuit using 4 stage spirals in the coarse circuit (-0.5+0.1 mm) and 3 stage spirals & tables in the fine circuit (-0.1+0.038 mm). In this process, 3 types of tailings are being generated and together analyses about 17 % Cr2O3, which is high. From the present operation the chromite recovery is around 70% and could not produce coarse concentrates (+0.5 mm size). Whereas the siliceous type ore is treated in the Lumpy Ore Processing (LOP) plant, consisting of crushing-washing & classification-hand sorting operations, to produce marketable grade lumpy ore and –10 mm de-slimed fines. These fines are intermittently treated in the COB plant. The higher silica content (greater than 1%) and low Cr/Fe ratio (less than 2.8) are the problems with these concentrates."

"The floatabiliby of chelate CF-collector for zinc and lead oxide minerals was described. It found that CF-collector possesses a strong collection power for zinc and lead oxide minerals as well as excellent selectivity for the gangue minerals. A new technology of zinc and lead oxide flotation with CF reagent as a collector, lead nitrite as a activator and water glass as modifier was presented. The mechanism of interaction between reagents and minerals was discussed by means of adsorption, zeta potential, nephelometric titration, XPS and infrared spectra was investigated.CF-collector, newly developed by Beijing General Research Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (BGRIMM), is a kind of chelate collector for the flotation of oxide minerals. CF-collector mainly consists of N-nitroso-N-phenylhydroxylamine ammonium salt. The CF-collector was used for the selective flotation of scheelite in the Chinese plants.In this paper, the effects of the dosages of activator Pb(NO3)2 and depressants (sodium hexametaphosphate, polyphosphate, water glass and salified water glass) on the floatabilities of several minerals (cerussite, smithsonite, calcite, dolomite, limonite and quartz) as well as their mixtures were investigated in the presence of the CF-collector. The results show that the CF-collector is the excellent collector for selective flotation of cerussite and smithsonite. Pb(NO3)2 can selectively activate the oxides of lead and zinc resulting in a decrease of the CF-collector dosage. The sodium hexametaphosphate plus the salified water glass are the effective depressants for gangue minerals. Based on the above facts, the “CF process”, namely, used CF reagent as a collector, Pb (NO3) 2 as a activator, and sodium hexametaphosphate plus salified water glass as depressant, has been used for the flotation separation of the lead oxide mixtures or zinc oxide mixtures without disliking and heating. For the feed lead assaying 19.07%, the lead concentrate assaying 49.81% Pb at the recovery 80.69% was obtained after one step flotation. For the feed zinc assaying 12.85%, a zinc concentrate of assaying 29.56% Zn at recovery 83.87% was obtained."

"The Floatability Characterisation Test Rig (FCTR) is a self-contained, highly instrumented mobile pilot flotation plant developed by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre, the Mineral Processing Research Unit of the University of Cape Town and EIMCO, as part of the Australian Minerals Industries Research Association (AMIRA) P9 Project. Apart from being a fully operational pilot plant, the FCTR was designed to determine flotation model parameters and to develop and validate flotation plant modelling, scale-up and simulation methodologies.The FCTR was installed at WMC’s Kambalda Nickel Operation where circuit modelling, simulation and scale-up test work was performed using the AMIRA P9 flotation model as the basis of the analysis. The model parameters were obtained through metallurgical sampling, batch flotation tests and gas dispersion characterisation around the FCTR. Model parameters were determined for four FCTR circuits, each of increasing complexity. The circuits ranged from a simple rougher-cleaner configuration with no recycle streams, to a more complex rougher-cleaner-recleaner configuration with two recycle streams.Using the P9 modelling methodology, the system was analysed using four mineral species: nickel sulphide, iron sulphide, copper sulphide and non-sulphide gangue. The floatability of each mineral was analysed as two floating species (fast and slow) and a non-floating species. Mass balanced data from all four FCTR circuits were regressed simultaneously together with data from 47 batch flotation tests. Nonlinear regression was used to determine the solution. The model fit was found to be accurate with most data points predicted within experimental standard deviations. A Monte Carlo sensitivity analysis was also performed to establish the stability of the regressed parameters.Using the P9 simulation methodology, simulations of five FCTR circuits (different from the previous four) were performed. The FCTR was also operated in these five circuit configurations to obtain experimental data to validate the simulated predictions. The simulations were found to predict the recovery and grade of nickel sulphide and copper sulphide within experimental standard deviations. The prediction of recovery and grade of iron sulphide and non-sulphide gangue was less accurate. Overall the FCTR simulations predicted the changes in circuit configuration well."

"The modelling of bath type furnaces tends to be either fundamental in nature or total empirical ""black box models"". While models of the first kind are robust, they tend to lack accuracy, in cases where they are to be used for process control, and may take an overly long in development time. On the other hand, black box models tend to lack robustness of prediction for all circumstances and tend to be limited to interpolate based on historical data. While this may very often provide short-term accuracy, the models may have problems with stability in the long term. Moreover, the model structure may not reflect any of the fundamental properties of the system and remains opaque to fundamental analysis. The aim of the model development is in obtaining a model that have robustness, high accuracy, a short development time and which is adaptive to a changing environment. The models are specifically developed for on-line decision support or control of furnaces. The modelling approach is evaluated for a chromite bath smelting furnace. The role of systems analysis, mass balance smoothing, thermodynamic analysis are integrated into one generic algorithm for bath type furnaces. Not only are fundamental process relationships such the mass and energy balances satisfied through a scientific method of data reconciliation; the proposed modelling approach allows adaptive prediction, the first step towards predictive control or metallurgical decision support.It is shown that neither an ARMAX model only, nor a purely equilibrium model only, could predict the dynamics of the process very well. However, a combination of the two approaches more than doubled the accuracy as measured by the R2. It was noted for carbon dissolved in the alloy, that the improvement in R2 in using a hybrid modelling approach was more than the sum of the R2 of the individual traditional approaches. Similar improvements in modelling performance were noted for all other species.It shows further that process dynamics may totally overshadow the effect of thermochemical equilibrium (even when the thermochemical equilibrium prediction includes the recycled alloy and slag heels as additional feeds). The exclusion of process dynamics therefore leads to erroneous results."

"CSIRO Minerals has developed an integrated particle size analysis system for deployment in the grinding circuits of minerals processing plants. The system includes a slurry sampling station, a de-aeration tank and an ultrasonic particle size analyser (UltraPS). The UltraPS analyser is based on ultrasonic attenuation and velocity spectrometry combined with gamma-ray transmission. The technology is applicable to the measurement of 0.1 to 1000 µm diameter particles directly in highly concentrated slurries without dilution. The analyser incorporates a gamma-ray transmission gauge utilising an ultra-low activity radioisotope source that is exempt from International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Australian licensing regulations.The UltraPS analyser consists of a submersible probe and an electronics package. The probe can be immersed directly in a minerals processing plant stream if the aeration level in the stream is low. For applications where a de-aerated slurry stream is not available, CSIRO has developed an integrated system that includes a sampling station, a de-aeration tank as well as the UltraPS analyser itself. A schematic drawing of the continuous flow gravity fed system is shown in the figure. A commercial sampling system is used to supply slurry at a rate of 2.5m3/hr to the deaeration tank. The aim of the de-aeration tank is to remove air in the slurry to a level where meaningful particle size measurements can be performed. The tank volume is about 0.2m3, thus giving the slurry flowing through the tank a mean residence time in the tank of approximately five minutes. Tests at a number of concentrators have shown that five minutes is sufficient time for slurry to de-aerate to a level where ultrasonic measurements can be made. The tank incorporates an ultrasonic level detection sensor and flow to the deaeration tank is adjusted based on the level of slurry within the tank. The UltraPS probe is mounted through a flanged section of duct, which is bolted to the bottom of the de-aeration tank."

"Coal-fired electrical power generation plants produce 56% of all the electricity in the U. S., burning approximately 860 million tons of coal annually. This results in production of 58 million tons of fly ash; 19 million tons of bottom ash and boiler slag, and 23 million tons of desulfurization sludges. These are a considerable disposal problem, and it would therefore be very valuable to be able to sell these residues and byproducts as useful materials, rather than paying to dispose of them in landfills. However, utilization rates are currently very low, below 32% even for the most thoroughly commercialized combustion byproduct (fly-ash). This poor utilization rate is a result of the high impurity content of combustion byproducts, which make them unsuitable for existing markets. The experiments described in this paper were therefore carried out to study the application of mineral processing techniques to upgrading combustion byproducts.Experiments were conducted to upgrade and purify low-grade combustion products to produce highgrade, readily saleable materials. A process was developed for removing unburned carbon from coal fly-ash by froth flotation, using reagents originally developed for flotation of oxidized coals. This technique could reduce the carbon content of fly-ashes containing up to 11.1% carbon to less than 2%. The froth product was sufficiently carbon-rich that the recovered carbon has value as fuel, or as low-grade activated charcoal.Fly ash was also examined as a binder for producing iron ore pellets, primarily as a substitute for bentonite. It was found that Class F fly ash in combination with an activator (calcium hydroxide) was an effective pellet binder at dosages comparable to the currently-used dosages of bentonite clay. While the flyash worked very well alone, tests in combination with bentonite showed that fly-ash/bentonite mixtures had significantly worse binding performance than either pure bentonite or pure fly-ash-based binder. This was determined to be due to the fact that bentonite and fly ash have profoundly different binding mechanisms, with fly-ash undergoing a pozzolanic chemical reaction while bentonite binds through a physical attachment process."

"Autogenous (AG) and semi-autogenous (SAG) mills often operate in an unstable state because of the difficulty to balance the rate of replenishment of large ore particles from the feed with the consumption in the charge. This has led to an increased interest in obtaining an accurate and direct measurement of mill load and the behaviour of the mill charge. A problem in attempting to measure those parameters is getting a sensor that is both robust and sensitive enough for continuous on-line measurement.Techniques that measure the force acting on the lifter when it hits the charge inside the mill have got an increased interest recently because of the ability to combine it with DEM modeling. This paper presents a method for the measurement of the apparent filling level in a pilot ball mill equipped with the Metso Continuous Charge Measurement system (CCM). In this technique a strain gauge sensor is mounted on a flat steel spring which is fitted into a recess underneath a lifter bar. In addition, a conductivity probe, the Boliden Grinding Measurement System (GMS), is mounted in another lifter bar with the purpose of comparing the two measurements. To visualise the behaviour of the charge a 2D DEM modelling technique is used with Metso HFS software.The pilot mill is a grate-discharge mill, equipped with 12 rubber lifters of square size 0.1 m, face angle 45 degrees. Steel balls in the size range 10-30 mm and density 8000 kg/m3, are used in the experiments. Test material is a hematite pellet feed, d50 around 45um, chosen to get stable grinding conditions with respect to feed size variations.The experiment is meant as a first test of the equipment’s performance, and to study how the sensors respond to changes in some operating variables. To get an understanding of, and distinguish between correlation and causality, experiments are performed according to a full factorial design with two levels, and in addition two replicates of the experiments at a center-point in the charge level setting."

Improving food security by increasing crop output is a primary objective for most countries in the sub- Saharan region. Most soils in the region are deficient in phosphorus an important nutrient after nitrogen in plant growth. Phosphates are therefore used together with nitrogen and potassium based fertilizers in improving crop production. Zambia like many other countries in the sub-Saharan region imports phosphate fertilizers for use by its farmers. However, indigenous phosphate deposits of igneous origin exist in Zambia of which the main ones are Chilembwe in Petauke district, Mumbwa sugarloaf in Mumbwa district, and Nkombwa Hill in Isoka district. If commercially exploited, these deposits could become a ready source of inexpensive phosphate for the local farming communities in the country. Previous research has shown that partially acidulated phosphate rock (PAPR) produced using Chilembwe phosphate rock is just as agronomically effective as the imported superphosphate fertilizers on food crops in most of the Zambian soils. PAPR is produced by reacting finely ground phosphate rock with only a fraction (usually 50%) of the stoichiometric quantity of the sulphuric acid required to fully convert the apatite in the rock to monocalcium phosphate thus making the process cheaper in terms of acid consumption than the poduction of single superphosphate where the apatite in the rock has to be fully converted to monocalcium phophate. The factors that affect the percentage of available P2O5 in the PAPR produced include particle size of phosphate rock, degree of acidulation, concentration of acid, process temperature profile, residence time and drying temperature. These factors were studied in a 25kg/hr PAPR pilot-plant in the School of Mines at the University of Zambia using Chilembwe phosphate rock. The PAPR pilot-plant consisted of a rotary drum granulator as the main reactor, a rotary drum dryer and a triple deck vibrating screen. Ground phosphate rock was reacted with sulphuric acid and water in the granulator to form a granular product which entered the drier. The dry product was screened into three size fractions. The 1 – 4 mm size fraction was the final product whilst the –1mm size fraction was recycled. The +4mm size fraction was sent to a crusher while the crushed PAPR was sent back to the screens.

"A dynamic, interactive map has been developed of the life cycle of a number of metals, from mining through to minerals processing, metal production, product manufacturing, recovery and waste management. Whilst the existing metal process network and waste management infrastructure provide substantial scope for (product) design, these also limit change because of the strong path dependency of industry and infrastructure development. The metal production network is complex, as it consists of an interconnected and integrated system that incorporates multiple production routes for a spectrum of metals. More often than not, the production or recovery of a single metal is related to or dependent on the generation or recovery of another. The effects of these other metals is of great importance. In order to realize the potential economic importance of impurities, research and development have integrated the processes of copper production with those of lead and zinc, and connected the processes to those of among others silver, bismuth, tin and platinum group metals (PGMs), for example. The recovery of these elements from the interconnected circuits is extremely complex, as most of the elements must be circulated between two or more circuits before they are concentrated enough to make their extraction possible, and their recovery as a compound profitable.From such a system’s perspective, it can easily be seen that a complication for solid waste management has arisen through the development of products (consumer goods) that bring together metals that are not linked in natural resources. As a consequence, many of these materials are not compatible with any process in the metals production network that was developed for the processing of primary, natural resources, optimized for the processing not only of the primary metal but also for all mineralogically associated minor valuable and harmful elements. The formation of large or complex residue streams or undesired harmful emissions then inhibits processing and recovery of said products at their end-of-life. Another complication is that any change to the system (in metal production, SWM or product design) affects the system configuration. Due to the changing demands for metals as a result from the changing products made from the metals for example, the relationships between the processes in the interconnected metal production systems change. This affects both the demand for old scrap (required amount and grade) from waste management, and the environmental profile of the metals. Preferably, therefore, product designers, waste processors and metal producers must cooperate to realize optimal metal recovery in processing discarded consumer products."

"INTRODUCTIONIn a jig, which is primarily a coarse mineral concentration device, the bed of mineral particles is pulsated with a stream of water resulting in the particles of different specific gravities. It operates in a cyclic manner – the jig cycle consists of four stages, namely, inlet, expansion, exhaust and compression. In the inlet stage the bed lifts up en masse. Near the end of the lift stroke the particles at the bottom of the bed start falling resulting in the loosing of the bed which, in turn, causes its expansion or dilation. During the third and fourth stages the particle resettle through the fluid, and the bed collapses back to its original volume. The pulsation and suction are repeated to bring about stratification with respect to specific gravity across the bed height. Various parameters affecting the stratification process include amplitude and frequency of pulsation, bed thickness, rate of hutch water flow, and feed characteristics. This paper first presents a review of various jigging theories and then describes a new approach to mathematical modeling of jigging employing the discrete element method.JIG MODEL BASED ON DISCRETE ELEMENT METHOD (DEM) APPROACHThe jig models based on DEM essentially involve tracking the position of each particle incrementally, applying Newton’s law of motion and a force displacement law at the contact. The model presented here is based on a three dimensional mathematical description of solid-solid and fluid-solid interactions. In this model, the force balance on a particle is extended to account for the effect of continuously varying fluid on the particle. The total force on each particle is made up of a known external body force, fluid particle interaction force and particle-particle and/or particle-wall interaction force. The fluid-particle interactive force is primarily made of drag and buoyancy. Di Felice’s correlation is used to evaluate the drag force. Solid-solid interaction is described by treating particles as discrete elements that are indestructible but interact with each other and any other elements present, such as walls, when they make physical contacts. A pair of spring and dashpot represents a contact The contact forces are computed from the amount and the rate of overlap of the particles at the contact. The motion of the particle is due to movement of the fluid, which transmits its energy through the particle-particle contacts. A computer program incorporating both the contact and the fluid model has been developed. It takes the operating parameters such as amplitude and frequency of the pulsating fluid, pertinent data concerning particle properties and the geometry of the jig bed as inputs."

"The development of the SAG Power Index (SPI) Test in Canada has created a new and accurate way to measure ore hardness in a SAG environment. Coupled with the standard Bond Ball Mill Work Index Test it is now possible to determine from these two relatively inexpensive laboratory tests, the amount of energy required to grind an ore from the primary crushed size to the desired liberation size. By testing multiple samples to discover where the hard and soft ore zones are located, the representative hardness distribution for the ore body can be determined and grinding equipment selected that is capable to meet production targets for all mining areas of the deposit.Previously, it was deemed prudent to select up to 50 t samples of ore for Semi Autogenous Grinding (SAG) pilot plant tests and a second 5 t sample for metallurgical pilot plant work. The methods outlined in this paper show how the 50 t sample is no longer required for SAG design because it is better to measure the representative hardness distribution of the ore body than the hardness of a “chosen” representative sample. This is demonstrated to be true by the fact that the lower horizons of an ore zone cannot initially be accessed to recover 150mm pieces, and the bulk samples taken, rarely represent the desired design hardness of the ore. Median hardness will not yield a good result in most cases and a clear understanding of the location and extent of the hardest zones is imperative to achieve a truly successful grinding circuit design.This paper discusses two plants (Kubaka and Agnico Eagle) that have been designed using SPI and Bond with no pilot plant test backup. Both have been very successful in that they can grind design tonnage on the hardest ores in the mine. This guarantees that the mine’s profitability is protected in any mining sequence. It also allows the extra power to be converted to higher throughput on softer ores if additional cash flow is needed. The advantages from the owner’s point of view are dramatic. This procedure will be attractive as well when considering the costs for test work, and the samples for testing. Existing diamond drill core is normally used and this allows the inclusion of data from the deepest regions of the mine. In addition, it is also clear that the decision to use a crusher can now be made at the design stage of a project based on measured parameters and the estimated capital costs of alternative designs."

"From a metallurgical point of view, acid leaching of oxide zone copper ore is considered in the first place in terms of ore grade, whole rock mineralogy, rock granulometry, crushed aggregate size distribution, porosity, permeability and corresponding fluid flow characteristics. Despite exhaustive physicochemical and general mineralogical characterization, drops in copper recovery occur and are often attributed to and “unquantified mineralogical misbehaviour” of the gangue phases. This study establishes an experimental link to monitor and quantify the chemical interaction of chrysocolla, malachite and atacamite with reactive gangue phases.Laboratory-scale sulphuric acid (15%) leaching in small columns is carried out using a synthetic rock composed of 57% quartz, 1% ore phase, and 42% reactive gangue. Gangue phases were selected to represent mineralogy found in argillic, advanced argillic, and propylitic alteration zones. Exotic copper ores of Codelco Norte (in particular Mina Sur) served as model for the modal distribution of mineral phases. Natural reactive gangue phases (<200 Tyler mesh) were chosen as pure as possible: Saz-1 and Swy-1 montmorillonites, KGa-1B and KGa-2 kaolinites (all Clay Mineral Society, USA, Source Clays) Nau-2 nontronite, Imt-1 illite (both Clay Mineral Society Special Clays) and Chilean mordenite, laumontite and bentonite. Ore phases are: mineraloid chrysocolla from Radomiro Tomic (Codelco Norte), reagent grade malachite and a purpose synthesized atacamite-paratacamite mixture. Complete chemical, physicochemical and mineralogical characterizations were carried out for ore and gangue phases.The following observations hold for samples with and without mineralization: Smectite-rich gangue increased up to 75% in volume. Once wet, air-filled vesicles formed due to the rapid sealing effect of overlying smectite in the column. No volume change occurred for illite, mordenite and kaolinite gangues. For kaolinite mixtures acid puddles formed on top of the column during initial leaching due to the delamination and barrier formation of this phyllosilicate. Fluid recovery was <60% for expandable phases and reached up to 80% for non-expandable mixtures. These observations confirm the very low extractions obtained in ore with a combined smectite – kaolinite gangue for Mina Sur. The most important mineralogical changes observed in the solid residues are: reduction of basal smectite phase reflections (XRD), and slight loss of illite intensities. This is also reflected in the major element composition of the residues, which demonstrate a loss of Mg, Mn, Ca, Na, K followed by Fe, Al and Si; with their proportions depending on the starting materials. Furthermore, alunogen and meta-alunogen formed, with related phases coquimbite (illite) and godichite (nontronite) also depending on gangue mineral chemistry. For laumontite samples, meta-alunogen and alunogen precipitated from the leachate."

"Covellite is one of the most important copper sulfide minerals. Its behavior during the anodic polarization, as well as its rest potential in various solutions are of importance for flotation processes and also define the mechanism of electrochemical extraction of copper from sulfide minerals.Measurements of the rest potential have been performed in water solutions in presence of different cations and anions. The existence of the Nernst type dependence of the rest potential on the activity of some of the investigated ions was established. The biggest influence on the rest potential of covellite exhibits the change of activities of the ions forming the crystal lattice of investigated mineral, i.e. Cu(II) and S(II). The dependence of the rest potential of covellite on logarithm of Cu(II) activity has a shape of a strait line with a positive slope of 60 mV, while when concentration of S(II) anions increases ten times, the rest potential of covellite decreases about 120 mV. The first dependence was established in acid medium, while the second was registered in alkali one.Different electrochemical techniques have been used for the investigation of the behavior of covellite during anodic polarization. In the basis of all these measurements is a three electrode system consisted of: 1) working electrode made of the sample of natural covellite from the Bor mine (Eastern Serbia, Yugoslavia); 2) reference electrode (saturated calomel electrode) and 3) counter electrode (flat platinum). Electrolyte solutions used in these investigations are of the same kind as those used in the rest potential measurements. Sulfate and chloride solutions, as well as the mixed sulfate/chloride solutions, are the most perspective from the application point of view.Cyclic voltammetry has been the first used method that confirmed the formation of passive layer on the electrode surface during anodic polarization. Elementary data about the reaction mechanism have been obtained too. More detailed data needed for more precise conclusions about the mechanism and rate of the anodic process on covellite have been obtained by galvanostatic method. It was established that the essential difference exists between the reaction mechanism in sulfate and chloride solutions. Also, the difference is exhibited in the nature of reaction product directly connected with the passivation of the electrode surface. Chronopotentiometric investigations have been performed in sulfate, nitrate, chloride perchlorate and mixed sulfate/chloride solutions applying different current densities. The shape of obtained curves indicate if there was a surface passivation and how intensive it was."

"Process control in the minerals industry is made difficult by factors such as the multivariable nature of the processes, noise, many disturbances, the changing nature of the processes, nonlinearities, process constraints, slow responses and large deadtimes. A good example of such a process is a milling circuit, where all these problems are experienced. Since model predictive control (MPC) effectively handles most of these difficulties, Mintek decided to develop, customise and test an MPC controller for milling control.Conventional MPC uses a dynamic model of the plant to calculate the future (predicted) plant outputs based on the movements of the manipulated variables in the past. The future moves of the manipulated variables can then be calculated using an optimisation algorithm that will minimise the difference between the setpoints and the predicted outputs. The least squares optimisation method is the quickest, but it does not cater for process constraints. Constraints can, however, be handled explicitly by using a quadratic programming optimisation method. This method ensures that the variables stay within the constraints at all times, but the calculation procedure is much more computationally intensive.• modifying MPC for the Minerals Processing IndustryIt was found that in order to obtain good, robust control using MPC in the minerals processing industry, the conventional MPC algorithm had to be adapted. The MPC controller was first tested on an extensive milling simulator, which was specifically developed for that purpose. Problem areas were identified and the MPC controller was specially adapted to accommodate for these difficulties. Some of the adaptations to the conventional MPC algorithm and special features added were as follows:Since milling plants contain many integrating processes (e.g. sumps), and integrating errors can cause offsets and poor control, it was essential that integrators be handled explicitly. This problem was solved by adapting the algorithm and also using an integrating error portion to compensate for integrating errors.Constraints on the inputs and outputs adversely affected the control. The controller using simple least squares optimisation was tuned with the constraints in place, while the maximum expected setpoint changes were made. This ensured that the process would be able to handle most setpoint changes up to these expected values without violating the constraints. A later improvement on this method was the incorporation of a quadratic programming algorithm to perform the optimisation. This method handles limits explicitly and was shown to perform better than the least squares methods (at the expense of a much higher computational cost)"
