It is well known that high strength steels used in aerospace industry, are generally susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement during surface treatment such as electroplating with zinc on cadmium. Hydrogen embrittlement reduces ductility and results in brittle fracture rather than failure by plastic deformation. Hydrogen embrittlement of high strength steels is mitigated by surface treatment such as plating with other metals. Data on the hydrogen contents of steels before and after surface treatment by hot extraction-thermal conductivity, secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and UV-visible spectroscopy along with the mechanism are presented.

Imperfections such as lack-of-fusion and undercut are inevitable in field welding of pipelines. Above a certain size, such defects must be removed or repaired. In the present state of the art, determination of allowable defect size is done by Engineering Critical Assessment (ECA). This requires measurement of toughness, and comparison of toughness with crack driving force. ECA methods used in current international pipeline standards will be reviewed and compared.

"In 2010, the Eurocode for Geotechnical Design, EN-1997-1:2004 (CEN, 2004), informally known as Eurocode 7 or EC7, became the Reference Design Code (RDC) for geotechnical design – including rock engineering design – within the European Union (EU). EC7 is one standard within the comprehensive Structural Eurocode suite, which as a whole has been also adopted by a number of other countries beyond the EU. EC7 is thus becoming a key design standard for geotechnical engineering worldwide.As part of the Structural Eurocode suite, EC7 requires designs to adhere to the principles of Limit State Design. However, it is not clear that current rock engineering design practice can satisfy this requirement. In addition, evidence is accumulating that EC7 is currently difficult to apply to, and may even be inappropriate for, rock engineering design. These issues may be due to the fact that the development of EC7 to date took place without any formal input from the international rock mechanics and rock engineering community.In early 2011 under the auspices of CEN (Comité Européen de Normalisation / European Committee for Standardisation), EC7 entered a formal period of maintenance which was aimed at improving the applicability and ease-of-use of the Code. This maintenance cycle will conclude in 2020 with the publication of a revised version of EC7.This paper describes a number of critical aspects for rock engineering in the context of EC7, inparticular the following:– the history of the Structural Eurocodes and the concepts they embody;– the nature of Limit State Design and the challenges and opportunities it poses for rock engineering design;– the formal means by which the Structural Eurocode maintenance cycle proceeds;– the plans currently being developed for improving EC7 with regard to rock engineering design and construction;– the unique and vital opportunity for the entire international rock mechanics and rock engineering community to comment on the Code and make suggestions for its improvement."

The recovery of fine hydrophilic gangue in flotation is related to the recovery of water. Water is carried by bubbles as a film and wake into the froth. The amount carried (entrained) depends on bubble size, gas rate and the subject of this paper, frother type. To isolate the effect of frother type from that of bubble size and gas rate, gas holdup is used as the correlating variable. Measurements were made using a bubble column (no solids) operated continuously with the overflow recycled. Continuous operation meant some foam depth was required to ensure only entrained water is recovered. Using an automatically controlled 7cm foam depth the overflow rate of water is used as a measure of 'water carrying rate'. It is shown that the common frothers can be grouped into four families based on the water carrying rate-gas holdup relationship.

"Abstract -Vanadium mineralization occurs in oxide-rich horizons within the layered gabbro zones of the upper parts of the Bell River Complex, Matagami, Québec and the Lac Doré Complex, Chibougamau, Québec. The vanadium-rich horizons are well defined on the ground and in aeromagnetic surveys by their high magnetic susceptibility; consequently, magnetic susceptibility can be an indicator of vanadium mineralization. The main oxide minerals are ilmenite and titanian magnetite, containing 20% to 70% of volume and the ratio of titanian magnetite to ilmenite is relatively constant, ranging from about 1:1 to 2:1. Their sizes are less than 5 µm to greater than 1 mm to 2 mm, occurring as coarse- to medium-grained subhedral crystals intergrown with cumulate silicate minerals (plagioclase, pyroxene, etc.). Electron microprobe analyses indicate that the ilmenite grains are mineralogically and compositionally homogeneous and have low V contents (average 0.18% equivalent V2O5). In contrast, the titanian magnetite grains are inhomogeneous, consisting of trellisworks of ilmenite lamellae in Ti-poor, V-rich magnetite [less than 2 wt% TiO2, and 1.41% equiv. V2O5 (1.16% V2O3) for 20 analyses]. Thus, the magnetite is the principal ore mineral of vanadium; it hosts vanadium in the form of V3+, not V5+, as is commonly and erroneously reported. We have also devised a flowchart for the beneficiation of vanadium-titanium ores. Sommaire - La minéralisation de vanadium se trouve dans des horizons riches en minéraux oxydés de la partie supérieure des zones de gabbros lités des Complexes de la Rivière Bell, Matagami, Québec et du Lac Doré, Chibougamau, Québec. Des horizons riches en vanadium ont été bien définis sur le terrain et dans les levés aéromagnétiques par leur susceptibilité magnétique élevée; conséquemment, la susceptibilité magnétique est l’indicateur directe du contenu en vanadium. Les principaux minéraux oxydés sont l’ilménite et la magnétite titanifère, contenant 20% à 70% du volume et le rapport de magnétite titanifère à ilménite est relativement constant, allant d’environ 1:1 à 2:1. Leur dimension varie de 5 µm à plus grande que 1 mm à 2 mm, apparaissant sous forme de cristaux subidiomorphes, de grains grossiers à médiums, intercroissant avec la gangue silicatée (plagioclase, pyroxène, etc.) de la texture de cumulat. Les analyses à la microsonde électronique montrent que les grains d’ilménite sont minéralogiquement et chimiquement homogènes avec un faible contenu en V (moyenne 0.18% équiv. V2O5 ). Contrairement, les grains de magnétite titanifère sont hétérogènes, contenant des lamelles d’ilménite en "trellisworks"; ces grains sont pauvres en Ti et riches en V pour la portion magnétite de la magnétite titanifère [surtout contenant moins de 2 wt. % TiO2, et en moyenne 1.41% équiv. (1.16% V2O3) pour 20 analyses]. Ainsi, la magnétite est le principal minerai de vanadium; elle renferme du vanadium sous forme de V3+ et non de V5+, tel qu’il a été communément et à tort rapporté. IN the past, the Cadomin Coal Company has opened four mines, all in the same coal seam or its folds. Three of these were opened from river level by horizontal entries or rock tunnels, and the fourth, the present working mine, by vertical shafts. This paper deals largely with some operating phases of this fourth mine, with which the writer has been associated. The seam worked here is a thick, steep, bituminous seam, and the writer feels there is a paucity of published data on the mining of such seams. Possible reasons for this are that such seams do not !end themselves to intensive development or mining, there is little chance to mechanize because of the extreme pitch, and operations are fraught with many problems. In addition, the present operations in this particular seam are being carried on at a level below the former workings, introducing new problems, not en-countered on the upper level. Coal will, without question, long continue to be an important factor in the national economy, and some of the best coal is to be found in thick, steep seams. But with the exhaustion of the easily-mined coal near the outcrops, future coal will have to come more and more from lower levels. At Cadomin there is still considerable coal on the second level, below the old river-workings, and there is a possibility that, in the future, still lower levels will be worked. It is the purpose of this paper to indicate some phases of such lower-level operations and to invite discussion.

"IntroductionTHE ORES treated at the concentrator of the Britannia Mining and Smelting Company, Limited, Britannia Beach, B.C., have always contained some lead, but it was not until 1950 that the combination of lead headings and lead price was such that recovery of this metal at Britannia became worthwhile. In that year, with the mining of a new orebody, the lead in the mill feed was raised from 0.07 per cent to 0.15 per cent. Chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and pyrite concentrates are produced by flotation at Britannia, •and 95 per cent of the lead in the mill feed reports with the chalcopyrite concentrate, so that the rise in lead headings was reflected almost wholly in the lead content of the copper concentrate. In 1950, investigation was started to determine if some of this lead could be recovered economically."

Mine lateral development advance rates currently average about 5 metres (16.5 ft.) per day. Granduc Tunnel hit 35.1 metres (115 ft.) on their best day, 12 km from the portal, single heading forty-three years ago. This Canadian mining record remains an excellent example of rapid drill and blast excavation with suggestions for improving current practice.

Screening is an important operation in dry and wet closed circuit mineral processing applications. Most of the operations have seen the benefits of using fine wet screens in primary grinding sections where the product is relatively coarse, and screens can handle the tonnage. Although many models are available, most of them are confined to dry and wet coarse screening applications. Most models do not give good predictions for wet fine screening. To facilitate model development, pilot plant tests were performed using a single deck Derrick Screen at aperture sizes of 45µm, 75µm, 106µm, and 150µm. Experimental data for a range of feed solids concentrations and flowrates was collected and used to calibrate the performance of the screen under the different operating conditions. The results showed that the performance of the screen deteriorated with an increase in feed solids concentration, and, similarly with an increasing feed flow rate. The percentage of fines carryover also increased with the reduction aperture size. The carryover was even more pronounced at higher feed rates and solids concentrations. A model was developed for predicting the performance of fine wet screening. Data from the test work was used to compare the actual and predicted results, and to calibrate the model. Additional independent data was used to validate the model and assess its limitations. This model will give an expected screen performance based on the initial feed conditions. It incorporates screen design parameters that allow for an estimation of a suitable screen size for a desired performance based on given feed conditions. This paper discusses; the results from the test work performed, the model development and its limitations.

In today?s environment, the availability of production equipment is a must to increase throughput and profits. For a number of mining organizations around the world, spare parts availability is key to achieving this goal. Fortunately, having less production equipment immobilized by a lack of spare parts does not equate to increases in inventory levels or in carrying costs. Advance operations research has shown a number of avenues to increase equipment availability while reducing total investment in stock. The presentation will explore these avenues by focusing on key inventory management changes that can be implemented by organizations to optimize their service and stocking levels. We have successfully applied our approaches in start-up mining projects, in mature projects and in end of life mining operations. We will illustrate our methodology using examples from our work with > 30 mining sites around the world.

Aluminium industry has an increasing interest in the diminution of the energy consumption of the Hall-Heroult process by the reduction of the anode bottom covering with gas. Electrically isolating carbon-dioxide bubbles, produced at the anode, increase the ohmic resistance of the cell. As the gas production rate is determined by the applied current density, anode covering can be decreased only by a faster evacuation of the gas from the inter-electrode space. Among others, the inclination and curvature of the anode bottom promotes the release of the bubbles and thus decreases the mean value of the covering. Indeed, anode, insert in the molten cryolite bath has a square shape with horizontal bottom. However, inhomogeneous anode consumption, electro-erosion, bath circulation and the inclination of the bath-metal interface modify this shape gradually during electrolysis. Anode bottoms become inclined with rounded comers. This concentrates the gas generation to the center zone of the anode. As the bubble layer cannot be observed directly because of the hostile environment and the opacity of the bath, real scale air-water systems are used to study the impact of the anode geometry on the anode covering and the bubble induced flow. However, the physical properties of such a system are different than that we can found in the real cells. A simulator using the Lagrangian description of the bubble layer has been built and presented in earlier papers. This tool was used to investigate the effect of the anode inclination on gas covering and bath velocity, for both C02-cryolite and air-water system. Results obtained for the second system were compared to experimental data .

New sensor systems have been developed, which exploit material properties such as electrical conductivity, magnetization, molecular structure, thermal conductivity etc. This opens up new exciting preconcentration and upgrading possibilities for many applications such as nickel, gold, copper and other ores as well as for industrial minerals, diamonds and other gem stones.

The strain softening relationship developed in part 1 is now applied to coal. Having determined the post-failure stress-strain curve for coal specimens, this information can then be used in a finite element program, such as Phase 2, to examine the post failure characteristics of coal pillars. Using example data, the strength of coal pillars of different width/height ratios are estimated and compared with well-known empirical pillar size-strength relationships. In addition, the post-failure stress-strain behaviour of a coal pillar is compared with an empirical relationship reported in the literature.

Abstract - Aggregates (sand, gravel, and crushed stone) are low unit-cost products extracted in very large volumes for the construction of buildings, roads, and other infrastructure essential to modern society. Because of their low unit value, transportation costs are a key factor in resource economics, and deposits are commonly developed close to market (i.e., close to towns and cities, or along low-cost transportation corridors). This proximity results in potential conflict with residents over land use, disturbance, and pollution. Management of aggregate resources in Alberta is examined in the light of resource geology and distribution, and governance. A case history of development of the Calahoo-Villeneuve deposit is described, and the conflicts between residents and developers that led to establishment of an Area Structure Plan (ASP) are explored. The plan sets limits to, but at the same time safeguards, resource extraction, and defines terms for compensation to residents through a voluntary levy on production (Community Enhancement Fund). This fund is used to support community activities and to pay for a groundwater monitoring program. The ASP is examined within the context of the "Seven Questions to Sustainability" as set out by Mining,Minerals and Sustainable Development-North America (2002). It is concluded that the ASP, for the most part, provides a good model for conflict resolution and sustainable resource development, which could usefully be applied in other jurisdictions. The ASP was developed at a municipal level, and adoption at a provincial level would aid sustainable development of aggregate resources across the province.

"SUMMARYSamples of Aunor gold precipitates which varied widely in gold content were fluxed to produce a bisilicate slag with various oxidizers and combinations of oxidizers. On the basis of some preliminary tests a flux composition was chosen which appeared to show the most promise.The different components of this flux were then incorporated into a matrix for a 23 factorial design experiment to determine what were the most important variables and what changes should be made to the flux composition to optimize the resultant total bullion fineness.The results of the 23 factorial design experiment showed that the flux composition as calculated was very close to an optimum as only very minor changes were required to give bullion in excess of 995 fine.INTRODUCTIONEarly in 1969 the results from the Aunor Gold Mines refinery showed that wide variations existed both in precipitate grade and in total bullion fineness. An analysis of this data showed that as the precipitate grade increased, the gold bullion fineness also increased (see appendix 1). Therefore, to improve the refinery results test work was initiated to: 1) improve the precipitate grade and 2) to determine, with the help of statistics, a flux composition which would be able to handle wide variations in precipitate grade and give a total bullion fineness in excess of 950 fine."

"The DENVER Tube Press is a simple, high pressure (1500 PSI (100 bar)) filtration unit, developed for processing difficult-to-dewater materials and to produce a handleable filter cake and clear filtrate product.Lab and Pilot testwork conducted in Australia on coal fines (55-70% -35 micron (400 mesh)) have shown that total moisture contents of less than 20% are consistently achieved in the final cake products from the Tube Press.currently, these coal super fines are sent to waste due to uneconomical mechanical dewatering methods, which were only able to reduce total moisture levels in excess of 30%. Calculated, throughput rates for the 500 series Tube Press exceeded 1700 kg/hr (3750 lbs/hr). Feed solids concentration requirements are between 45 and 50% to achieve these results.INTRODUCTIONThe DENVER Tube Press is an automatic membrane high pressure filter press, which operates at hydraulic water pressures up to 1500 PSI (100 bar). The Tube Press was developed in the late 1960's by Charlestown Engineering, st. Austell, Cornwall, England, formerly a division of English China Clays, Ltd., to address more effective methods of moisture reduction of micron-size china clays. The Tube Press reduced moisture sufficiently to produce a hard surface-dry, handleable cake and clear filtrate discharge, which was recycled into the process. This development work was conducted using a 200 Series Tube Press (200 mm diameter x 2500 mm long filter surface)."

Formability of extruded round AZ31 magnesium alloy tubes with different manganese concentrations was evaluated by performing bending tests and measuring strain along the length of the tubes during the bending process. It was found that an increase in the manganese content from 0.3 % to 0.7% did not exert any significant effect on the values of yield stress, elongation, or compression to fracture. However the hardness tended to increase and the UTS decreased. The compressive ductility was significantly lower than tensile ductility for all manganese concentrations. Consequently, the formability of tubes decreased, causing cracks in areas where compression strain occurred during bending. It was also found that a larger strain occurred in the latter half of the region along the length of tube between the clamp-end and the tube-positioning block. Within this region, alloy tubes with higher manganese concentrations, 0.5 and 0.7 %, there was a clear strain peak within the strain profile, while for the 0.3 % Mn alloy, a more uniform strain profile was exhibited, indicating a more uniform deformation. This was confirmed by microstructural analysis of the specimens.

"The purpose of this paper is to report in a general way on the use of the Portaspec X Ray Spectrograph.At Manitou Barvue, we are milling two types of ores, copper and zinc. The control assay practice was to take grab samples at 4 hour intervals. These samples were dried in the mill, then taken over to the Assay Office where two operators would process them. Three hours later results were available at almost the same time as the operator was ready to take his set of grabs again, leaving no time for adjustments, if any were needed.After a reduction of personnel, there were no assays available on night shift. This practice was slow and inadequate, and a new way of doing control assays was investigated.After investigation the Portaspec was found suitable for the type of operation that we had in mind. The Portaspec is a conventional dispersive type of X Ray spectrograph. The instrument consists of three parts:The Power Supply The Spectrographic Head The Digital ScalerIn our case, where dried powder samples are analyzed, the instrument was provided with a two sample holder using one for the standard and the other for the sample. The operation of the instrment does not require any degree of skill or knowledge of chemistry or spectrography.Previous to buying the instrument, six sets of six to ten samples were sent to the supplier along with the assay for each sample. These samples were Cu. HDS., Cu. Conc., Cu. tls, - Zn. HDS., Zn. Conc., Zn. tls. A definite pattern was observed. For example - six Cu. HDS. samples ranging from .40 to .90 gave 10400 counts for the lowest to 16.040 counts for the highest. The number of counts were then plotted to give percentages."
