"The main object of ore reserve classification is to assess the reliability of an ore reserve estimate. Because traditional classification schemes fail to provide a means of calculating this reliability, the terms 'proven "" 'probable' and 'possible ' ore were introduced as an attempt to qualify it.Geostatistics, on its part, allows the quantification of the precision of any ore estimate and thus appears as an appropriate tool for ore reserve classification.However, the problem of fixing quantitative boundaries for ore classes remains. In order to be meaningful, ore class limits based on the degree of reliability should be customized to the commodity, and the type and size of the deposit. In addition, the precision of an ore estimate will be affected by the cut-off grade and the size of selective mining units.IntroductionPrimarily, ore reserve classification should be seen as a communication tool between the geologist and the mining engineer on one hand and the management and policy maker on the other. By classifying ore reserves, the geologist tries to answer the very fundamental question: ""What quantity of metal is there in the ground and how sure am I that it really exists?""The difficult y of quantifying the degree of reliability of reserves has led to the creation of a large suite of terms and definitions, with almost every mining company having its own set of definition standards. As lower-grade deposits are brought into production, the margin of tolerable error in estimates of the grade and tonnage is becoming much narrower. Consequently, the need for unequivocal definition of the reliability of ore reserves is increasingly acute. Most of the generally accepted systems of classification, however, describe the reliability of reserves in qualitative, rather than quantitative, terms."

Several occurrences of disseminated galena, including a former producing mine, are found in Pennsylvanian fluviatile sandstone of the Salmon River Basin, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Detailed study of the distribution of these occurrences has revealed that highest galena concentrations are found in sandstone overlying channel-shaped depressions in felsic basement rocks. These buried depressions, in turn, correlate in position with modern streams in areas of basement exposure. This correspondence suggests that the latter are at least partially controlled by an exhumed Pennsylvanian topography. If this is correct, then several other streams in the area, lying on basement, may be used to locate possible undiscovered lead deposits in sandstones of the Salmon River Basin.

"Dome Mine's No.8 shaft is located about 1 km northeast of Dome's No.3 shaft and mill complex in South Porcupine, Ontario.No.8 shaft was brought into production in 1984 to hoist ore and waste for the complete mine as well as to service the mine from the 1600 level and below. Access above 1600 level is provided by No. 3 shaft.The rectangular shaft has six compartments consisting of two skips, a cage, counterweight, manway, and a service compartment. The over-all size of the shaft is 14 ft 7 in. by 20 ft by 7 in. (Fig. 1). A 7th compartment for shaft deepening is incorporated in the bottom 500 ft of shaft. The shaft is 5470 ft deep. The loading pocket is located at 5300 ft and the dump 61 ft below the collar.Surface facilities consist of a concrete headframe and a structural steel hoistroom which houses the cage and production hoists . The service hoist is a 12-ft diameter double drum, with one 1750 HP DC motor, and the production hoist is a 15-ft diameter double drum with twin 1750 HP DC motors.Both hoists have a single clutch and a single reduction gear train built by Orenstein & Koppel, and equipped with Canadian General Electric drives. The cage hoist is equipped with a disc pinion brake.The skips were originally aluminum 14-ton capacity, Rolla-chute design with steel liners on three sides and 4 in. of rubber on the back, to absorb the loading impact. The original guide rollers consisted of fixed 10 in. pneumatic tires. The face-to-face units were eventually replaced with larger airplane-type tires mounted on a spring loaded pivot arm."

Several mining operations are currently evaluating the feasibility of changing their mining method to Block Caving. There will also be several deep low-grade ore bodies that will face the need to go underground in following their ore to depth. There are two main reasons why Block Caving is attractive: firstly, it offers the lowest operating costs amongst all the mining methods; and secondly, it is truly a massive mining method, offering the highest potential production capacity. Despite its longstanding popularity, there are still significant components of the method that are not clearly understood. Also, the lack of availability of key geomechanic information still presents a major obstacle to developing mine planning and production scheduling. There are several key issues in block caving that can make it feasible such as cavability, fragmentation, stresses will condition the way that a block caves and the way that material is drawn from the draw points. Consequently Block Cave mining method is a good example where the ore body has to be related to design and mine planning. The concepts of dilution, draw control as well as sequence definition are reviewed in this paper to illustrate the idea of integration. There have been some examples of mines where some of the components of mine planning have not been integrated causing a disaster in terms of economics or safety. Different layouts configurations might give a different result in the planning of the mine

"The uranium deposits upon which the Rabbit Lake project story is based are located at the eastern margin of the Athabasca Basin just west of Wollaston Lake in northern Saskatchewan. This paper provides a general review of the exploration history for the major deposits and the influence of an expanding geological data base, which served to guide the continuing exploration programs.A brief description of each of the deposits is provided in order of their discovery and with emphasis upon their relative geological and mineralogical characteristics.The Rabbit Lake and Eagle Point orebodies are monometallic uranium deposits localized by thrust faults within the Aphebian Wollaston Group. The Cof/ins Bay A-zone, B-zone, and D-zone are polymetaflic U, Ni, As, Co (Au , Ag) deposits located within the Helikian Athabasca Group at its unconformable contact with the underlying Wollaston Group. INTRODUCTIONThis paper demonstrates the importance of applying the accumulated geological knowledge, gained through the exploration, mining, and development process, to the ongoing success of exploration programs. To emphasize this point, the basic geology of each of the major Rabbit Lake area deposits will be presented in chronological order of their discovery and subsequent development. These depos its include Rabbit Lake, Collins Bay A-zone, B-zone, D-zone and Eagle Point. The geological descriptions are based primarily upon the detailed observations of many current and former geologist s employed by both Gulf Minerals Canada Limited and Eldorado Resources Limited. Much of the early historical data was obtained from Dr. E.E.N. Smith, formerly with Eldorado Resources Limited. Regional GeologyThe Rabbit Lake area which includes the Rabbit Lake, Collins Bay A-zone, B-zone, D-zone and Eagle Point deposit s, is located on the eastern edge of the Athabasca Basin close to the western shores of Wollaston Lake (Fig. I). The area is in the Churchill Province of the Canadian Shield within the Wollaston lithostructural domain, at the eastern edge of the Athabasca Group. The uranium deposits occur within both the Wollaston Group metasedimentary assemblage of probable early Aphebian age, and the diagenetic ally altered quartz sandstones and conglomerates of the Athabasca Group of Paleohelikian age. Both units unconformably overlie granitoid gneisses interlayered with metasediments and a graphitic iron formation all believed to be of Archean age. All uranium depo sits in the Rabbit Lake area occur in close proximity to the Paleohelikian - Aphebian or Paleohelikian - Archean unconformity."

In the Polish coal mining industry, the use of mine waste in underground backfill has been the most common means of providing ground support to minimize surface subsidence, increasing extraction ratios, and reducing the quantity of waste for surface disposal. Over the last decade attention has been focused on the use of different waste as filling material of underground workings and grouting of roof fall rocks in caving area. In the paper, a brief history of the development of fill technology in Polish coal mining industry is presented. Next, the paper discusses various criteria that should be taken under consideration in the preparation process of a fill slurry and grout, fill distribution systems, mining geometry and placement methods. Moreover, in the paper evaluation of the potential of utilizing coarse and fine waste as a resource material in the production of a backfill slurry and grout for filling and injection in abandoned mines is presented.

"The main components of a ""PC” -based mineral inventory system are described in a sequence common to many real reserve/ resource estimation projects and in the practical context of problems and decision-making typically encountered in such studies. Some components are designed particuarly to improve the geostatistical instructional capability of the package. An important part of this approach involves the use of widely available software for data manipulation and evaluation in the design of a mineral inventory study progressing to mine design and feasibility. A variety of more or- less fixed routines written in high level languages provide acceptable computational speeds on a personal computer. These critical segments are linked by simple, short, compiled Basic programs easily adjustable to various data configurations and needs. IntroductionGeostatistical mineral inventory estimation has progressed greatly since its slow dissemination during the 1960s. The mining industry generally has accepted the benefits of the technique, notably the quantification of grade and geology, an indication of error in grade estimation, and of the mined volume / grade variance relationship (Clark, 1979, Isaacs and Srivastava, 1989).Acceptance has been slowed, first by complexities of geostatistical theory and second by a bewildering variety of computer systems and applications programs. Continuing improvements in education will facilitate a better understanding of the underlying theory.The purpose of this paper is to describe, in a practical context, the development of a geostatistical-based approach to reserve/resource estimation. The approach integrates various existing commercial software packages with a wide selection of programs developed by the authors for personal computers which estimate mineral inventories and educate users in the techniques applied; that is, the QMIN system.It is hoped that the approach presented here will convince mining and geological engineers concerned with resource estimation, of the soundness of geostatistical methods and its broad potential to their problems."

"This paper presents the statistical analyses of several sets of data acquired in several programs of sampling of radon daughters in uranium mines. The measurements were taken over periods of days or weeks for given locations or location occupations within these mines. Because the sampling applies to specific intervals of time and specific locations, a method is suggested f or the eventual application of a monitoring program which would be suitable on an annual basis for these locations. The present data and analyses thereof are not justifiably applicable to a monitoring regimen on an annualbasis, without a number of additional assumptions.The aim of the present analyses of concentration measurements is the determination of the minimum number of measurements required to achieve an annual radon daughter exposure estimate, for individual workers, having an error no greater than 50% at the 95% confidence level. The criterion of accuracy is taken from a statement in the American National Standard, Radiation Protection in Uranium Mines (ANSI NI3.8-I973), and is currently used, in somewhat modified form, as a guide to uranium mining licensees in Canada. Uncertainties associated with occupancy time are ignored in the present analysis. IntroductionOne of the principal aims of any scheme of radiation protection is that of improving the accuracy of exposure estimation for workers. The example presented here is from the area of radon daughter exposure estimation for uranium miners. The conventional means of estimating workers' exposures is grab sampling of radon daughter concentrations combined with occupancy time weighting in the various work and travel locations. "A multielement (Au, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, c-, Ag, As, Hg, Co, and S) geochemical rock sampling survey was carried out in 1977 in the Munro Township area of Ontario to assess the application of rock geochemistry for gold exploration in the region. Detailed sampling with analysis for gold and arsenic was done in 1986 in the immediate vicinity of the Croesus Mine.Samples of quartz veins and rock formations were taken in regional traverses and in more detail near old showings, prospect pits, and trenches. Quartz, graywacke, carbonate rock, and rhyolite contain the highest concentrations of gold for samples taken away from the old workings. Ultramafic rocks and gabbro have uniformly low gold. Basalt samples have slightly higher geometric means, but individual samples contain high gold concentrations. Multielement highs are mostly in mineralized quartz samples. Gold distribution is independent of other elements in most other rock types. Samples near old showings possess elevated concentrations of gold indicating that prospecting for individual mineral deposits by bedrock sampling is feasible. Concentrations of gold greater than 100 ppb are mostly within 30 m of old workings. Those samples which contain greater than 1000 ppb Au were obtained from quartz veins, basalt, graywacke, and rhyolite.High concentrations of gold were not notably concentrated near the Contact Fault although some anomalous samples came from near and on both sides of the fault. Arsenic concentrations are elevated near the Contact Fault. Detailed sampling near the Croesus Mine suggests that gold was introduced with faulting, alteration and quartz veining. Gold and arsenic have been added to the wallrock in the vicinity of the main veins."

"The geological composition of strata immediately adjacent to coal seams has a significant effect on the safe and efficient extraction of coal from underground mines of the Sydney coalfield. Geological features such as paleo-sandstone river channels, seam splits, floor rolls, paleo-soils and stone-filled rupture features can rapidly alter the competency of immediate roof and floor strata, significantly reduce the height of the coal seam, cause rapid variations in seam gradient and influence the in situ and run-of-mine quality of the coal.The impact of these features on the over-all mining operation can be significantly reduced if mine management can be for-warned of their impending occurrence. Using the information acquired from boreholes, geological mapping, x-ray diffraction analyses, microscopic studies, geophysical logs and seismic surveys, sedimentary models have been constructed which enable the mine geologist to predict, with increasing accuracy, the future occurrence of deleterious geological features ahead of the working face."

"All optimum pit design studies start from the geological are reserves inventory, the estimated grades of all blocks of potential are within the interpreted limits of the deposit. The actual optimization procedure is then carried out on block valuations based on these estimated grades. Thus, the relevance of any pit design can be seen to depend directly on the ore reserve estimation . To insure a proper pit design, a first step would be to use a geostatistical reserve estimation technique such as kriging, however, this is not enough. A frequently neglected fact is that the blocks of ore estimated during the planning stage of the mine are usually considerably larger than those on which the ore-waste selection will be made at the time of mining. Experience in the exploitation of large low-grade deposits has shown that large blocks, estimated to be are, when mined selectively in smaller blocks, often yield significant amounts of waste material. This phenomenon, known as internal waste, is a function of the variability of the grades, the size of mining unit and the amount of sampling information on which ore-waste decisions are made.In this study, it was proposed to consider the effect of internal waste caused by selective mining, on. pit design, using geostatistical methods to predict the tonnage and grade of recoverable reserves within large blocks.Optimum pits obtained using a block valuation formula taking into account the recoverable reserves within large blocks were compared with optimum pits obtained using a conventional block valuation formula. It was found that the optimum pits obtained by the proposed method had the highest total valuations and thus were, in fact, ""more optimum”. These pits were characterized by greater are tonnages at a lower average grade, the additional ore more than compensating for the drop in grade. It was also found that the consideration of internal waste in pit design could considerably alter pit limits in marginal areas of the deposit.It was concluded that selective mining had a significant, potentially critical, impact on the design of optimum pits especially in the case of large low-grade deposits."

"Removal of radium from uranium tailings would substantially lessen their environmental impact because it would eliminate, or greatly reduce, the hazards arising from radon emanation, leaching of radium, dust dispersal and gamma radiation. A process is described to extract radium from tailings by leaching in 3M Nael solution. The radium can be rapidly leached at ambient temperatures by either multi-stage contact in agitated vessels or washing on a tailings filter cake. Extraction efficiencies ranging from 80 to 94% have been measured for tailings derived from a number of Australian ores.Methods for radium recovery from the leach solution by precipitation, ion exchange and adsorption have been examined. Precipitation as barium/radium sulphate appears to be the most suitable approach. A possible flow diagram for the process is proposed which involves recycle of the saline leach liquor.IntroductionDisposal of mill tailings is the most contentious environmental issue facing the uranium mining industry. The conventional approach to managing tailings is to store them in a dam above ground. Attempts have been made to stabilize some tailings piles by physical or chemical methods. In a few cases, the tailings have been covered with earth and revegetated. However, most tailings piles from abandoned mills are in a neglected state and subject to the erosive and dispersive forces of nature. The cost of remedial action is high. The United States Department of Energy (DOE) has estimated that it will cost up to $130 million to rehabilitate abandoned mill sites in the U.S .A..Environmental authorities are now insisting that uranium mining companies improve their methods of tailings disposal. In the United States, the preferred approach is burial, either in mines or in specially excavated pits. Tailings retention systems as operated in Canada are regarded as storage facilities until an acceptable method of disposal is found. In Australia, the Fox Commission recommended that tailings from the Ranger project should be returned to the open-cut mine. Returning tailings to the mine has considerable merit, but it is not always a viable option. In many underground operations, it is not physically possible to fit all the tailings in the worked-out mine. In other cases, the groundwater hydrology of the mine may be unfavourable."

"The fire resistance of several mine conveyor belts is evaluated using a new belt-flammability apparatus developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The test apparatus, experimental details and a calculated flammability index (FI) are described.The FI values are useful for ranking the fir e resistance of mine conveyor belts. Values are determined using parameters readily measured with thermocouples, high-temperature flow probes and a methane-oxygen torch, all of which are components of the Bureau's new test apparatus. The FI varies directly with the flame-spread rate and the rate of heat release during burning and varies inversely with the critical (minimum) ignitor energy output.The fire-resistance ranking of nine different belt types using this moderately scaled apparatus is compared with available full-scale data on belt fires. This comparison shows that the ranking based on the FI is consistent with the full-scale data.IntroductionFull-scale fire hazard evaluations of mine conveyor belts are not easily related to the properties usually measured in small-scale flammability tests. The inadequacy of small-scale belt fire tests has been demonstrated in works by Mitchell, Warner and Reinke.Mitchell and Warner showed that certain neoprene (NP) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) belts, which had been approved by the Code of Federal Regulations 30 CFR 18.65, were nevertheless capable of propagating flame over their entire length when full-scale fire conditions were simulated. Comparable results were also observed by Reinke at the Tremonia experimental mine in Dortmund, West Germany, where all belts burned in full-scale tests even though they passed the small-scale tests. Only by reducing the severity of the full-scale test could these fire-resistant belts be grouped on a pass-fail basis."

In this paper, the authors review the literature, report on efficient, optimal algorithms for haul truck dispatching in real-time, and briefly discuss methods used by various mines to evaluate productivity improvements over manual methods. Most of the used cathode ray tube (CRT) glass in Japan, which contains lead oxide, was exported and recycled in overseas factories of new CRTs. However, domestic treatment and recycling of waste CRT glass has become necessary because overseas CRT factories have shut down and exports of CRT glass have stopped. Some of the waste CRT glass recycled domestically is charged in lead blast furnaces instead of silica flux, because there is no local reproduction route for glass that contains lead. However, the mass of CRT glass that can be treated in this manner is limited because of its high silica content. Consequently, additional treatment methods for waste CRT glass are required so that more can be used as a lead smelting material. In this study, waste CRT glass was treated with hydrofluoric acid to dissolve the silica contained in the glass, and the dissolved lead was recovered by precipitation. Lead metal was recovered by electrodeposition from the prepared hexafluorosilicic acid solution.

Methods of extracting copper are evaluated in terms of innovations during the 1970's, and predictions to the end of this century are made. It is concluded that between one and two new smelters and refineries will be needed per year until the turn of the century, and that most of these smelters will be of the oxygen or oxygen-enriched flash furnace type. For converting, the Peirce-Smith converter will still predominate, but the Hoboken converter will play an increasingly important role. Five Japanese pollution control systems are described and it is suggested that much of this technology will be included in future smelting installations. Further growth of hydrometallurgy is predicted, especially for oxide ores, based on improved product metal quality and low plant cost. A n increased level of scrap resmelting is also expected.

"In order to determine its capabilities and to aid in the interpretation of fie ld results, a scale model study and field tests were carried out on the Crone borehole pulse electromagnetic (PEM) system. The model results indicate that if a borehole passes in the vicinity of a tabular conductive body, the system will not only detect the presence of the body, but will also return information as to its conductivity-thickness product, size, altitude and position.The effect of variation of these electromagnetic and geometric factors on the shape of the response curve from a borehole PEM survey is displayed by a number of suites of scale-model response curves. These model curves can be used directly as type curves in the interpretation of field results. Field tests of a prototype PEM system provide a check on the scale-model results and also summarize the procedure of interpreting field data using the model type curves.The borehole pulse EM system can be effectively used as a follow-up geophysical instrument for locating and delineating known conductive bodies. It can also be profitably utilized as a primary geophysical exploration tool in areas of deep mineralization below the depth limit of conventional airborne and ground geophysical systems. The probed area of a diamond drill hole in these cases is increased from a 1- inch drill core to a zone extending hundreds of feet from the hole."

"Extensive deposits of tectonically sheared coal of the Mist Mountain Formation occur in the south eastern Canadian Cordillera. The quality of the coal varies markedly; it is commonly partially oxidized and poor washability characteristics.Oxidation of the sheared coal has been promoted by its fine grain-size and by fractures in adjacent rocks which have facilitated penetration of atmospheric oxygen and circulation of oxygenated waters. Oxidation has resulted in a loss of coking power, a decrease in vitrinite reflectance, and an Increase In oxygen and decrease in carbon content.The relatively low clean coal yields of the sheared coal are primarily the result of the greater volume of mineral matter present, which in turn reflects both the greater susceptibility to shearing of coal with abundant rock partings and the shearing and dissemination throughout the coal of formerly discrete rock partings. The high ash content of some sheared coal seams may be artificial, resulting from the difficulty in distinguishing and separating sheared roof rock and floor strata from the coal seam during mining. There is little variation between the quality of the washed sheared and unsheared coal, with the exception of the somewhat higher ash content of the clean sheared coal compared to clean unsheared coal. This poorer separation of the ash from the organic fraction of the sheared coal is considered to be a product of the large amount of fines present as well as the local formation of aggregates of organic material and ash resulting from plastic flowage of the vitrite and clarite during shearing.IntroductionIn the southeastern Canadian Cordillera, coal seams of the Lower Cretaceous Mist Mountain Formation (Gibson, 1979 were in part sheared and comminuted during Late Cretaceous and Tertiary tectonism . Extensive deposits of sheared coal exist, and even in areas of mild deformation the coal may be locally sheared (Bustin, 1979). Techniques for Controlling Radiation17.1. Altering the Factors In the Diffusion EquationIt has been noted that radon gas emanates from the surfaces of exposed ore to the mine atmosphere. The diffusion laws establish the rate of this flow. The fundamental relationship is that the rate of flow (J) is a function of the pore concentration and the distance from the surface. It is expressed as: []If any of these terms is varied, either naturally or artificially, the rate of gas emanation will be altered.Altering the Diffusion CoefficientThe literature describes many ways to lower the radon gas emanation rates which are dependent on changing the diffusion coefficient:1.
