ONE hundred miles from Vancouver, at an elevation of 4,000 feet, is the Pioneer mine. It is situated on Cadwallader creek, a tributary of Bridge river, and is reached by travelling from Vancouver to Squamish by boat, a distance of thirty-two miles, from there by train to Bridge River (one hundred and seven miles), and finally by automobile across Mission mountain .(7,000 ft. elevation) to the mine (fifty-six miles): a total distance of one hundred and ninety-five miles. Prior to 1924, many Companies had examined the Pioneer, which had been developed by shaft to a depth of 200 feet, but, while values were good, the small size of the ore-shoot discouraged large investors. In July, of that year, opera-tions were re-commenced by the late David Sloan and, on sinking further, the ore-shoot was found to lengthen greatly as well as to ex-tend in depth, while remarkable gold values also were encountered. When, later, the price of gold rose from $20 to $35 per ounce, the mine was in an excellent position to take full advantage of the increase + and not only became an extremely profitable enterprise itself but its success greatly stimulated the search for and development of other 1-gold properties in British Columbia.

At its iron ore recovery plant at Copper Cliff, INCO produces about 17 million pounds per year of a pure, acid-soluble, dense nickel oxide from nickeliferous pyrrhotite. The process used is also applicable to a broad range of ammoniacal nickel-bearing streams. The product has been widely accepted by the chemical, ceramic and electronic industries.

Three dimensional (3D) seismic exploration has been carried out since the 1980s in the mining district of China, where it has been playing an indispensable role in the high yield and efficiency of coal mining. Unlike oil exploration, this technique uses high density seismic acquisition technology. In recent years, it has focused on wide azimuth 3D seismic acquisition. Evaluation of geometry moved away from depending on folds, azimuth and offset, toward being based upon a focus-ray beam. Conventionally, coalfield 3D seismic interpretation focused on time domain and was based on kinematics information, which is only suitable for less complex geological conditions. To achieve high-resolution processing for the complex topography and structure in coalfields, data processing shifted from poststack to prestack. The means to improve the accuracy of interpretation for complex geological conditions are 1) integration of multiple attributes and multiple disciplines, 2) combination of seismic and geological data, and 3) comprehensive combination of time domain and depth domain data. With the demand for lithological exploration, high-resolution data processing must also take into account the requirements of preserving amplitude in seismic data. Seismic attributes technology, seismic inversion technology, and dynamic tracking interpretation are key techniques in 3D seismic exploration. They greatly improve interpretation accuracy, produce better results in the goaf space description of the coal-bearing strata and coal seam structure, and effectively reduce exploration costs under complicated geological conditions. Therefore, these techniques will be the primary means employed in the future to deal with coalfield complex structure and lithological exploration.

"Ventilation is an essential component of any underground mine, playing a vital role in ensuring the health and safety of workers, and a mine’s continuous operation. At a time when mining companies are increasingly having to move to deeper underground operations in pursuit of high-grade ore-bodies, the search is on for more efficient ventilation systems that will allow mining to be carried out at even deeper levels whilst ensuring the protection of workers and the maximisation of productivity through temperature management and the lowering of energy costs. Mining companies today are looking for innovative ways to deliver new technologies and procedures to enhance their mine’s profitability. Energy consumption by mine ventilation systems is higher than ever due to stringent specifications of underground equipment (primarily combustion engine emissions), air quality standards and mining at deeper levels which all require more powerful ventilation systems. With energy costs associated with operating ventilation systems being a mine’s second-highest cost of production after labour, finding the optimal ventilation solution is critical to a mine’s performance. Proper fan design remains a major factor in reducing capital expenditures (CAPEX) and operational expenditures (OPEX), which means that there are compelling reasons for making use of comprehensive factory testing at full power before fans are dispatched to site to simulate the mine’s current and future design requirements, and thus verify the fan’s effectiveness in ‘real’ conditions.INTRODUCTION A primary mine fan is considered the heartbeat of the entire mine ventilation system, drawing fresh air from the surface and providing a safe environment for miners. A ventilation system’s lack of performance often leads to a reduction in acceptable air quality levels for underground working operations and can potentially have an adverse impact on production rates."

The control of AG mills fed by ores with harder and softer components can be challenging due to the sensitivity of the mill to the ratio of hard to soft components. The mills at LKAB?s iron ore operations are generally well controlled, but there are periods when the throughput falls off dramatically, due to a loss of mill filling. As the ore is upgraded in the sorting plant through magnetic separation prior to milling, this presents an opportunity to manipulate the feed blend in advance. In order to assess this opportunity, a fullscale mill charge was dumped and assayed by size to quantify the build-up of competent waste in the mills. This was supplemented by pilot and locked-cycle laboratory tests at a wide range of feed blends in order to facilitate the development of an appropriate multi-component AG mill model. This paper reports the experimental campaign requirements and methodologies, as well as the major outcomes from analysis and modelling exercises using the industrial, pilot and laboratory multi-component data.

Introduction A few years ago the name Katanga recalled, to those interested in copper, a far-off country in central Africa where deposits of huge size were beginning to pour a stream of copper into the world's markets. But no one heard of the adjacent part of northern Rhodesia as a potential copper region. It was then a bush-covered wilderness, with a few lonely, widely-spaced villages, and here and there a copper prospect that created but little outside attention. There was also one struggling mine whose development created pessimism. The low-grade carbonate outcrops of Rhodesia did not compare favourably with the rich carbonate ores of Katanga. And, since Katanga was mining only oxidized ores, it was then thought that this adjacent region likewise would contain only oxidized ores. The one mine that had been started, Bwana M'Kubwa, was working on low-grade carbonate ore at a loss. The outlook was not promising. But, a little over three years ago, the aspect changed. The vision of one far-sighted engineer embraced the possibility that here copper sulphides might underlie those low-grade carbonate croppings. His courageous associates furnished the capital; drilling commenced, and the great Roan Antelope mine rapidly emerged. In quick succession, the N'Kana, Mufulira, N'Changa, N'Changa Extension, and Chambishi mines were heard from. Prospecting and development are now proceeding apace, towns are being hewn out of the virgin bush, plants are being reared, and ramifying branch railways are being pushed out from the single line of steel that now connects Rhodesia with the coasts to the south. A great new copper-mining centre is in the making, about which the world will hear much in the future. As with most new mining camps, rumors abound regarding its ore possibilities; some are correct, some are erroneous, and reliable information unfortunately is all too scanty.

Three novel dextrin polymers of varying functional group chemistry but similar molecular weight have been used to depress talc in single and mixed mineral studies. The mixed mineral system was a model sulphide ore consisting of talc, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. Adsorption isotherms for the three polymers on both valuable and gangue mineral phases were determined to give initial clues as to the ability of the polymers to depress talc. Flotation testing revealed a distinct hierarchy of effectiveness of the polymers in the depression of talc in the single mineral system (MP Dextrin > CM Dextrin > Dextrin TYM), reflecting the observed adsorption affinity and adsorbed amount of the polymers on talc. However, a different order of effectiveness was observed for talc depression in the mixed mineral system (CM Dextrin > MP Dextrin > Dextrin TYM). Competition between the valuable and gangue mineral phases for uptake of MP Dextrin is responsible for its observed decrease in efficiency in mixed mineral flotation. All three polymers were found to be reasonably selective in their action, although at high dosages the polymers began to affect the flotation of the valuable minerals.

Recent interest in unconventional reservoirs motivates our work in laboratory measurements of seismic anisotropy. Seismic anisotropy is the variation in speed of a wave as a function of its direction of propagation. Analyzing anisotropy in unconventional reservoirs is important since anisotropy leads, for example, to differential stresses upon loading and could affect hydraulic stimulation (Reinicke et al., 2010, Zimmermann and Reinicke, 2009); in this sense, laboratory measurements are an important tool to study seismic anisotropy at small scales which can aid in the characterization of larger formations. The purpose of this work is to describe the laboratory methodology used to simultaneously measure ultrasonic P and S-waves in three different directions from a single core sample. Elastic anisotropy of a Proterozoic sedimentary rock from south-west Alberta is investigated. In metamorphic rocks seismic anisotropy is caused by preferred mineralogical alignment or foliation. Assuming a transversally isotropic medium, arrays of compressional and shear piezoelectric ceramic transducers were mounted on a sample trimmed from a core to measure travel times of ultrasonic P-waves and S-waves as a function of confining pressure at directions perpendicular, parallel, and oblique to the plane of foliation (bedding). Results show strong anisotropy agreeing with the assumption of a transversely isotropic medium. Dependence of travel times and hysteresis effects can be observed when pressurizing and depressurizing.

"As a powerhouse, a transformer or a valve chamber, large underground caverns are a major element of hydropower plant. On the contrary to galleries and shafts which are linear and long underground structures, large caverns are designed with often complex geometries and large spans. Moreover, as these caverns are generally located on the foot of the hydraulic scheme, the high overburden is often responsible of a high stress state. Thanks to current experiences in France and around the world, the Hydro Engineering Centre (CIH) of EDF has defined great principles in the design of caverns leading to a more general methodology. The project of Tehri in India is an example of difficult ground, with in the same time a high overburden, a ductile material and an important schistosity. These physical realities are attempted to be approached in numerical modelling thanks to a constitutive law with softening behaviour and an oriented criterion integrated in the continuum model. As a result, a flexible support is advised, based on a high density bolt system and a thin lay of shotcrete. This methodology has been developed in the case of Gilboa in Israel, except the schistosity which has not been observed in situ. At last, the example of Gavet (France) illustrates a discontinuous case of numerical modelling for a good quality but fractured rock mass.PRINCIPES ET METHODES DE CONCEPTION DE GRANDES CAVERNESHYDROELECTRIQUES SOUTERRAINESRESUME Les grandes cavernes souterraines abritant les turbines, les transformateurs et certaines vannes sont des ouvrages majeurs dans les aménagements hydroélectriques. A la différence des galeries et des puits qui présentent de longs linéaires, les grandes cavernes sont des structures à la géométrie souvent complexe et avec des portées conséquentes. De plus, ces cavernes étant généralement situées en pied du circuit hydraulique, la grande couverture rocheuse peut se traduire par un état de contraintes important. Forte de ses expériences récentes en France et dans le monde, le Centre d’Ingénierie Hydraulique d’EDF a identifié de grands principes de conception des cavernes permettant l’élaboration d’une méthodologie plus générale. Le projet de Tehri en Inde est un exemple de terrain difficile, présentant à la fois une forte couverture, un matériau ductile et une schistosité marquée. Ces réalités physiques sont approchées au mieux grâce à la prise en compte dans les modélisations numériques d’une loi de comportement radoucissante avec un critère orienté intégré dans un modèle continu. Les résultats ont conduit à privilégier un soutènement souple basé sur un boulonnage systématique relativement dense associé à une fine couche de béton projeté. Cette méthodologie a ensuite été reprise pour le projet de Gilboa en Israël, exception faite de la schistosité puisque non observée sur site. L’exemple de Gavet (France) enfin permet d’illustrer un cas de modélisation numérique discontinue d’un massif rocheux de bonne qualité mais fracturé."

Efficient and effective management of mine tailings is essential for continued successful development of Alberta?s vast oil sands resources. Syncrude Canada Ltd. continues to research novel tailings management techniques in an effort to improve production efficiency and environmental sustainability. During the summer months of 2001, Syncrude Canada Ltd., in collaboration with members of the Canadian Oil Sands Network for Research and Development (CONRAD), conducted field-scale trials of thickened tailings technology at Syncrude?s Aurora mine, north of Fort McMurray, Alberta. This paper provides an overview of the test program including discussion of objectives, test configuration, and program observations. 0Data collected during the field trial indicate that substantial swings in feed slurry composition challenge effective thickener operation. When coarse mineral solids dominated slurry composition, thickener rake torque rose to unmanageable levels. It was determined that the end-of-pipe depositional characteristics of thickened oil sands slurry were generally consistent with present understanding of oil sands tailings slurries. After shear, thickener underflow product exhibited very shallow beach angles and a limited capacity to keep coarser particles in suspension indicating that stacking of ?paste-like? thickener underflow product from a conventional thickener is not practical in an oil sands setting unless process adjustments can be made to increase the underflow density and/or preserve the initial high yield stress of the underflow during transport and deposition. These technical challenges notwithstanding, Thickened Tailings technology offers considerable promise for recovery of warm water from oil sands process tailings.

A layered Archean magma chamber is exposed at the base of the Yasinski segment of the La Grande greenstone belt. This intrusive complex lies beneath a sequence of mafic volcanics and is underlain by granitoid basement which is crosscut by a swarm of gabbroic dykes. The gabbros of both this complex and the dyke swarm of gabbroic dykes. The gabbros of both this complex and the dyke swarm define a pronounced Fe-enrichment trend. The volcanic patterns of the La Grande and Eas tmain greens tone belts, however, define a series of iron depletion trends which originate in the iron enrichment trend of the gabbroic intrusives. These patterns suggest that the gabbros produced in the intrusive complex may serve as parental liquids for some of the lava suites of the James Bay greens tone belts.

A new method using a combination of comprehensive mineralogical and analytical approach which includes optical and electrical microscopy and several analytical techniques with diagnostic leaching has been used to characterize the associations and distribution of gold in a variety of minerals from the Zarshuran refractory gold ore, NW Iran. Zarshuran ore with an average of 7.9 g/t Au-grade and about 8% arsenic with gold recovery less than 20% in direct cyanidation is considered as high arsenic, high au-grade refractory gold ore. In most of the refractory ores, gold is associated with arsenopyrite and co-para genetic ore minerals, while in Zarshuran ore; gold is associated with orpiment, realgar and arsenian-pyrite. Considering its mineralogy and As content, it can be considered as the most difficult refractory ore for characterization and processing. Results from the mineralogical examination and diagnostic leaches indicate that there is only a small amount of free gold (17-19%) that is present in cyanide-soluble sulfo-arsenides compounds, predominantly orpiment and realgar. Diagnostic leaches also indicate that little gold is occluded within the silicate structure (14%). Overall, the gold is mostly included in sulfides, arsenic sulfides and sulfo-arsenides (50%). The results also have shown how the technique can be used to gain a good initial understanding of potential metallurgical problems for a refractory gold ore.

This paper describes flotation test work conducted over the past several years at the Mines Branch, Ottawa, on the radioactive quartz-pebble conglomerate ores of the Elliot Lake area of Ontario. The purpose of this work has been to produce a uranium flotation concentrate for sub-sequent leaching operations. The results of earlier investigations are summarized and correlated with the results of mineralogical studies of the ores and flotation products. The results of recent pilot-plant investigations by flotation, as well as by gravity concentration followed by flotation of the gravity tailings, are given. The principal collector used for uranium flotation was a tall oil fatty acid, and the indicated total cost of all reagents ranged from 21 to 31 cents per ton of ore treated.

"Abstract - Alkali-alumina and MgO-alumina plots are an effective instrument for displaying chemical and mineralogical compositions of altered and unaltered rhyolites and rhyodacites. They reveal that most supposedly unaltered rhyolites, apart from those of Cenozoic age, have undergone losses in Na2O and gains in K2O. The extreme loss of Na2O from highly altered rhyolites immediately adjacent to VMS deposits is strikingly illustrated by alkali-alumina plots. MgO/Al2O3 vs. K2O/Al2O3 diagrams display a strong negative correlation between MgO and K2O that results from the conversion of sericite to chlorite. A similar negative correlation between MgO and whole-rock d18O is apparent on plots of these two parameters. Alkali-alumina plots underscore problems in selecting appropriate precursor compositions required for mass-balance calculations. Molar ratio plots are a viable alternative to such calculations. Sommaire -Les diagrammes alcali-alumine et MgO-alumine constituent un instrument efficace pour la représentation des compositions chimiques et minéralogiques des rhyolites et rhyodacites altérées et fraîches.Ces diagrammes révèlent qu’à l'exception de celles d’âge Cénozoïque, la plupart des rhyolites qualifiées de fraîches ont subi une perte de Na2O et un gain de K2O. L’intense perte en Na2O que l’on note dans les rhyolites fortement altérées associées aux gîtes de type SMV est particulièrement bien mise en évidence par le diagramme alcali-alumine. Le diagramme MgO/Al2O3 vs. K2O/Al2O3 montre une forte corrélation inverse entre le MgO et le K2O due à la conversion de la séricite en chlorite. Une corrélation inverse analogue entre le MgO et le d18O de la roche totale s’observe sur un graphe comparant ces deux paramètres. L’usage du diagramme alcali-alumine fait ressortir combien il peut être difficile de choisir un précurseur de composition appropriée pour des calculs de balance de masse. Les diagrammes de rapport molaire constituent une alternative à de tels calculs."

"In recent years with increasing concerns about energy consumption in hydrometallurgical processing, there is an ongoing attempt to use Catalytic Titanium Anodes (CTAs) for copper electrowinning. For this work, anodes with IrO2 - Ta2O5 coatings were prepared in the laboratory with the same total coating loading but varying the number of layers by changing the speed of withdrawal in dip coating. A second set of CTAs were fabricated on niobium, Ti Grade 1, Ti Grade 7 and Ti Grade 36 metal substrates. All the anodes prepared in the laboratory were characterized using standard electrochemical techniques and subjected to accelerated life testing. It was found that the coating would not adhere to the niobium substrate, the grade of titanium had a minimal to no effect on the life of the anode, and it is observed that as the coating speed slows, there is an increase in the electrochemically active surface area of the coating which seems to directly contribute to an increase in the Tafel slope of the anodes. There was inconclusive evidence on the effect of coating speed on anode lifetime.INTRODUCTIONLarge scale hydrometallurgical extraction of copper has become widely practiced over the last 40+ years. The hydrometallurgical route entails leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning. With the increasing desire to process refractory sulphides like enargite and chalcopyrite through the hydrometallurgical route, use of hydro-processing of copper is expected to remain high.In conventional electrowinning, copper is deposited on the cathode and an inert anode is used for oxygen evolution. Presently, the most common anode material is rolled lead-calcium-tin and the cathode is 316L stainless steel (Robinson et al., 2013). This lead alloy is fairly inexpensive and is robust, providing lifetimes typically of 4+ years. The main drawbacks of lead alloys are their relatively high oxygen evolution overpotential, the need for cobalt in the electrolyte to reduce their corrosion, the contamination of cathode product by lead, and the generation of harzardous by-products (Hiskey, 1999)."

"Annual mining revenue can be computed by formulae relating metal prices, smelting schedules, concentrate grade and recovery to known ore grade and an assessment of core samples. Operating costs at different daily tonnages are related to orebody shape, mining method, milling process and general plant services. Capital costs are related to sizing of mining equipment, mine development, plant-site topography, climate and accessibility, plant services and personnel housing. IntroductionA crude guide to the average 1978 cost of mine projects is shown in Figure 1, but the costs of many mine projects have differed widely from the graphed average costs of $800,000 T0.6 for underground mine/mill projects and $400,000 T 0.6 for low-grade open-pit mine/mill projects.High mine project costs and high operating costs are characteristic of open-pit mines with high stripping ratios, underground mines with thin orebodies, mills with complex metallurgy, and projects located in isolated regions with severe climate, mountainous topography, and lacking access to existing roads, towns and electric power. When none of these adverse conditions prevailed, the mine project cost was typically much less than the graphed average cost. Virtually all the conditions likely to cause high capital and operating costs are known from knowledge of the local topography, climate or accessibility, or can be assessed by tests on core samples, as soon as the orebody has been outlined by drilling .A more accurate estimate of over-all project capital cost and operating cost can be made from a summation of items of cost after judging the effect of specific local conditions on each item of capital and operating cost. This paper offers guides in judging the effect of local conditions on the sizing and 1978 cost of specific items of capital cost and operating cost and operating cost of mine projects. When the specific items of capital cost and operating cost are totaled and measured against expected net revenue and taxes over the life of the mine using the net-present-value or discount-cash-flow methods, the result should show whether the mine project development is clearly feasible, doubtfully feasible or clearly uneconomic. If the development of the mine project is clearly feasible, or probably feasible, a detailed feasibility study by experienced consulting engineers should be commissioned before any financial commitments are made; but if project development appears to be uneconomic, the time and cost of a detailed feasibility study is not warranted."

Uniaxial Compressive Strength (UCS) of rocks is an important mechanical parameter for many civil engineering and rock engineering applications such as tunnel excavation, slope stability and foundation design. Macau is one of the world's fastest growing and most densely populated cities, many large and important infrastructures have been being continuously built using pile foundations which are designed to be supported by granitic bedrock. In Macau, the UCS of the granitic bedrock is required almost for every project involving pile foundations and is always measured directly from UCS test in the laboratory. However, direct measurement of UCS requires high quality rock core sample which is not only time-consuming and expensive but also requires high level of operating skill. In view of this fact, estimation of UCS using some empirical correlations will be more practical and efficient because they are relatively fast and economical compared to the direct measurement from UCS test. In the past, some empirical correlations had been established and widely used for estimating UCS of rocks in common engineering practice. However, it has been well recognized that the rock properties are generally varied with sites or geological regions in other words an empirical correlation developed from one region or one country may not be applicable for other regions or countries. Due to the reason that the empirical correlations for predicting UCS for granite are scarce in practice, in this study an extensive experimental program has been performed and a large database containing data such as UCS, Point Load Index (Is50), Schmidt Rebound Hardness (RL), porosity (?), water absorption (S), specific gravity (Gs) and dry density (?d) has been developed. An attempt has been made for developing a new empirical correlation for estimating the UCS of Macau granite. Accordingly, a comprehensive statistical analysis for correlating UCS with Is50, RL, ?, S, Gs and ?d has been performed and a local empirical relationship based on the developed database is proposed for obtaining reliable estimation of UCS for the granite of Macau. Finally, the performance of the proposed correlation is accessed by using another independent testing database developed in this study. It indicates that Is50, RL, ? and S have strong correlation with UCS whereas Gs, ?d have poor correlation with UCS. This study not only proposed a proper predictive empirical correlation for UCS determination for Macau granite but also provides detailed statistical information which is beneficial to engineers for obtaining better characterization of Macau granite.

THE geology of the Copper Mountain mine has been ably described by Dr. Victor Dolmage in Memoir 171 of the Geological Survey. Reference is invited to that paper for a more extended description of the geology of the ore deposits than will be given here. The important orebodies of the mine occur in fragmencal volcanic rocks, parallel with and adjacent to the gabbro of the Copper Mountain stock. In the mine area, the contact strikes N.45°W. and dips either vertical or steeply co the southwest. For a distance of 500 feet or more from the contact, the fragmental rocks have been intensely metamorphosed both dynamically and hydrothermally. The dynamic effects are reflected in the foliation and fracturing parallel with the contact, which occurs throughout the mine, and the volcanic rocks within this foliated zone are, in places, highly schistose. Superimposed upon thi.s structure is a system of fine, straight, parallel frac-tures that strike nearly normal to the foliation (and contact) and dip between 65° and 75° to the north; it is with this last-described fracture system that the ore minerals are structurally associated. The fractures are mineralized with bornite and, to a considerably less extent, with chalcopyrite and some pyrite. A notable characteristic is the extreme fineness of the fractures; even in high-grade ore they are rarely larger than pencil lines. The tenor of the ore, therefore, varies directly with the fracture spacing. Replacemcnr of the host-rock between two or more fractures, varying in degree from finely disseminated sulphides to masses of nearly solid bornite up to 18 inches wide and 2 to 3 feet long, is not uncommon in the higher-grade portions of the orebodies. Two structural types of orebody are recognized in local nomenclature: the 'contact' orebodies, so-called because they occur along the contact; and 'outlying' orebodics, which are enclosed in the volcanics. The former arc tabular or lenticular bodies elongated along the strike and dip of the contact. The 'outlying' orebodies are coniform, chimney-like masses roughly elliptical in plan; with depth, their roots plunge at steep angles toward the contact. All of the orebodies are cut by a number of light-coloured granophyre and felsite porphyry dykes. These dykes-the so-called 'mine' dykes -enter the mine area from the north, curve gently southeasterly across the orebodies, and then cross the contact into the gabbro at the south end of the mine. All the dykes dip vertical to steeply east.

The preparation of a paper read before this Society in 1927 on Undersea Mining led to representations to the Deputy Minister of Mines at Ottawa, Dr. Chas. Camsell, and to the Director of the Geological Survey and the Director of the Mines Branch, which resulted in the undertaking by these bodies of a geological, physical, and chemical survey of the Sydney coalfield, combined with revision of the geological maps, on all of which much progress has been made. Preliminary studies revealed the necessity for a new base-map on a scale that would permit the representation of the whole coalfield from cape Dauphin to Mira bay on one sheet, and in the making of this map the Geodetic and Topographical Surveys have collaborated, with the assistance of airplane surveys for filling-in of detail. The new map will show all the data accumulated by 50 years of active mining and will show also the extent of mine workings, with level-contours under the sea. Dr. W. A. Bell, of the Geological Survey, has, over a number of seasons, studied in the field the historical geology with the purpose of elucidating the sequence of earth movements that have determined the structure of the coalfields, especially those that have governed the course and extent of the complementary folds that traverse the Sydney coalfield. Dr. B. R. MacKay, of the Survey, and the officers of the Fuel Testing Laboratories at Ottawa have made exhaustive studies of the Phalen seam, chemical and microscopic, intended to elucidate the conditions under which this seam was deposited, and some very interesting conclusions have been reached.

Abstract - The Aubry pegmatites are located on the Seymour Lake property, 15 km north of Lake Nipigon in northwestern Ontario. The property lies within the Caribou Lake-Marshall Lake greenstone belt along the English River-Wabigoon subprovince boundary of the Superior province of the Canadian Shield. The property was optioned in March 2001 by Linear Resources (now Linear Gold Corp.), who carried out gridding, prospecting, geological mapping, soil and lithogeochemical sampling, trenching, channel sampling, and a total of 1,866 m of diamond drilling in 32 holes. The Aubry pegmatites are classified by Breaks et al. (2003) as complex type, spodumene-subtype, lithium-cesium-tantalum pegmatites (Cerný, 1989). These pegmatites generally form under high-pressure-low-temperature conditions, display complex internal zoning, have relatively low Nb/Ta ratios in the ore-forming assemblages, and contain significantly elevated tantalum values (Cerný, 1989). Other examples of spodumene-subtype pegmatites include the formerly producing Hugo pegmatite in South Dakota, and the currently producing Greenbushes pegmatite in Australia. The Aubry pegmatites occur as an undulating system of stacked sheets that dip moderately to steeply eastward over a 1-km strike length. The main portion of the North Aubry pegmatite ranges in true thickness from 10 to 28 m over a strike length of 125 m, whereas the thickest portion of the South Aubry has an estimated true thickness of 15 to 16 m over a minimum strike length of 95 m. The North Aubry pegmatite remains open downdip and along strike to the north, whereas the South Aubry pegmatite remains open downdip and along strike in both directions. The Aubry pegmatites are among the most highly evolved in Ontario, with the southern end of the North Aubry (trench 5/6 area) being the most highly fractionated (Breaks et al., 2002). Channel samples from the trench NA-5 area of the North Aubry pegmatite produced values up to 2.49 wt.% Ta2O5 over 4 m. Coarse manganotantalite crystals, up to 5 cm in diameter, from this trench contain up to 84.9 wt.% Ta2O5 (Breaks et al., 2002). Drill hole SL02-31 in the trench NA-6 area gave values of 0.046 wt.% Ta2O5 over 17.7 m, including 1 m @ 0.464 wt.% Ta2O5. Further exploration will focus on defining the grade of the North Aubry zone, extending and defining both known pegmatites, and identifying additional Ta-rich zones within them. Lithogeochemical and enzyme leach soil geochemical data suggest the presence of multiple undiscovered pegmatites on the property.
