"In certain instances, rocks around underground excavations behave as a plastic mass. This paper offers several solutions to predicting the mode of plastic flow around cavities and designing mining pillars where plastic conditions exist.IntroductionWhen stresses around underground cavities exceed yield limits of the host rock, the material often behaves as a plastic mass. The best example of this phenomenon is the behaviour of salt rocks in deep salt and potash deposits (more than 500 m deep).However, many other soft rocks exhibit similar properties. For example, Jeremic(1) described certain types of coal yielding plastically under high pressure. Alder suggested that granulated rock behaves plastically.The object of this paper is to propose a de sign procedure for mining pillars exhibiting plastic flow due to the combination of rock properties and in-situ stresses.Prandtl(3) mathematically defined a concept of a generalized, perfectly plastic substance, not possessing the property of strain hardening (Fig. I). He had in mind, a solid with a quasi quasi-isotropic , polycrystalline structure having a well defined yield point, and he postulated that its material elements start and continue to deform plastically when the maximum shearing stress ""'MAX"" reaches a sharp limit, dependent on the mean value of the sum of the major and minor principal stresses:"

"No Canadian or his family is likely to escape the effects of proposals for pension reform tabled on October 9, 1986 by Finance Minster Michael Wilson. New tax rules are proposed for Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs), company pensions, and other forms of retirement plans. Draft legislation is expected to be released in the first half of 1987.IntroductionOver two years ago on February, 15, 1984, Mark Lalonde, then Finance Minister, tabled two White Papers. The first, Action Plan for Pension Reform, proposed improvements to the public pension system and increases in the minimum pension benefits standards to be mandated by the federal government. Since then changes have been made to the Old Age Security, Guaranteed Income Supplement and Canada Pension Plan programs. Also, benefits provided under pension plans subject to the federal Pension Benefits Standards Act have been improved significantly.The companion paper, Building Better Pensions f or Canadians, proposed to standardize and, in many cases, improve retirement savings through private plans by revising the tax rule s. The tax proposals in the Notice of Ways and Means released by Finance Minister Wilson on October 9. 1986 implement, with modifications, the tax treatment of retirement savings originally proposed in the May 1985 budget in response to that second paper."

"INTRODUCTIONThe Red Dog Project in Alaska is being developed by Cominco Alaska, a subsidiary of Corninco Ltd. of Canada, and the Nana Regional Corporation, one of the 12 native corporations created by the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of1971.The State of Alaska is also a very key part of the project through its financing of the transportation system for Red Dog. Red Dog will be the third, and largest, of Cominco's Arctic mining developments in the past thirteen years, after the Black Angel Mine in Greenland, which started up in 1973, and the Polaris Mine in the Canadian Arctic, which began production six years ago in 1982.Red Dog is one of the world's great mineral deposits, with a unique combination of large size, high-grade, and a waste-to- ore ratio less than I: I, which will make it the world's largest, and one of the lowest cost zinc producers, when at full production. The present mineral reserve is estimated to be 85 million tons , at a grade of 17.1010 zinc, 5% lead, and 2.4 ounces per ton of silver. Based on the current production forecast, this will give a mine life of almost 50 years, and the deposit is still open in two directions, although the structure is becoming thinner at depth. As well, there is a satellite zone about one mile south of the main deposit which could contain up to another 8 million tons of mineral at Red Dog grades or better. This is not presently included in the reserve due to potential processing difficulties.In relation to other zinc deposits, Red Dog is the second largest ever discovered, smaller than the original Broken Hill deposit in Australia, but larger than Cominco's own Sullivan Mine in British Columbia, which is number three. It is quite possible that, when the area is adequately explored, Red Dog will be number one."

"The Boliden Lead Kaldo Plant for the treatment of lead bearing flue-dust from the Copper Smelter and the Slag Fuming Plant has been in operation at the Ronnskar Works of Boliden Metall since the middle of 1976. At the present stage, the plant can treat lead-bearing dust of different kinds and compositions. The process allows good separation of arsenic and halogens from lead.The flue dust from the Copper Smelter and the Slag Fuming Plant is very complex and, apart from lead, also contains zinc, copper, tin, bismuth, cadmium, antimony, arsenic, sulphur, silver, chlorine and fluorine. The metallurgical process has been developed by Boliden Metall and has been tested on a pilot scale at the Foundation for Metallurgical Research (MEFOS) in Lulea, Sweden.The pelletized dust is smelted in the converter, where the heat is generated by an oil oxygen burner. The second step consists of reduction with coke. A lead bullion and slag are obtained. The slag, transported in liquid form, is treated in the Slag Fuming Plant for the recovery of zinc. The third step is the elimination of arsenic from the bullion. This is achieved by treating the lead with iron (turnings or pellets). The result is a crude lead and speiss. The lead contains silver, tin, antimony and bismuth, and is suitable for the final refining stages in normal plant equipment for refined lead.For process control, we use the rapid analysis centre, which is pneumatically and electronically linked to 'all major plant sections and allows for a quick turn-around between delivery of the sample and feedback of results. All three steps in the process are performed in the same converter.Since the starting up of the plant, the original process has been subjected to some modifications. Initial problems related to equipment, maintenance and environment have been solved step by step. Examples are quoted. Recent operating particulars are presented."

"The mill at Mattagami Lake Mines treats 3,850 tons per day. The mill feed is a heavy sulphide ore. It is composed ofPyrite & Pyrrhotite - 40%Marmatite - 17%Chalcopyrite - 2%Magnetite - 10%Talc and other Silicates - 31%The sulphides are intimately associated with each other and often finely disseminated throughout the siliceous gangue. An abundance of middling particles exist in the circuit and a delicate balance has to be maintained between concentrate grades and metal recoveries.The metal content of the mill feed fluctuates between 0.4 to 0.7% for copper and 6 to 13% for zinc.The flow sheet of the concentrator is shown in Figure 1.Eight sample streams have been selected for on-stream analysis, namely1. "Fifty years of wear on the original carbon steel shaft of this hydro turbine necessitated repair operations in 1980. Both austenitic and martensitic stainless steels have been used individually as journal materials in separate trials on an80-inch long and 22-inch diameter radial bearing but neither one nor the other has been successful.The wear and cracking problems of the stainless steels leading to the present abandonment of both classes of stainless steel are described. In particular the dependence of the toughness of type 410 stainless steel on its tempering temperature and the susceptibility of that steel to quench cracking are highlighted because problems have been caused by both of these metallurgical factors.IntroductionAs part of a desire to improve the efficiency of a fifty-year old hydro-electric generating station on the Saint John River, the decision was made to change the journal and bearing material for the shaft bearings, which are stave-type bearings. For the initial fifty years of operation the bearings had been wooden (lignum vitae) and had run on the carbon steel shaft directly. For one of the four unit s at this station the performance of this combination has been truly excellent, and the remaining three sets of bearings had performed well. However there had been shaft wear on the units and the wear had made the shafts somewhat elliptical when a decision was made to install some sort of new journal on to three of the old shafts. [In addition to the wear on the carbon steel journals it was found that one shaft was significantly softer in the bearing area than it was immediately above the bearings (180 Vickers in comparison with 230 to 250 Vickers)] ."

"A new method of managing electricity to reduce costs andimprove profits is discussed. Before taking steps to better manage electricity, it is essential to understand the terms peak demand and energy and their effect on an electrical bill. Knowing how electricity is presently used in the plant is the important first step. At this point, each process is ranked according to importance to production in order to identify possible savings opportunities. These improvements can then be implemented by simply improving operations or in some cases, through the use of an automatic control system. All costs associated with operation must be controlled in an effort to improve competitive position. Electricity is a cost component that can and should be managed.Although the term management can mean different things to different people, the intent is always the same: to make the best possible use of existing resources, whether labour, equipment or electricity.The simple approach to managing electricity presented in this paper consists of four steps.I. Understand Peak Demand and Energy. It is essential to understand the terms, peak demand and energy and their effect on your electrical bill.2. Know Your Present Electrical Use. The present use of electricity in the plant must be known. This goes beyond simply knowing how much is used at each time of day, to accurately knowing how each process is contributing to the total plant electrical load, and ultimately to the electrical bill.3. Identification of Savings Opportunities. With this information, energy savings opportunities for reducing the electrical bill and improving profits can be identified.4. Implementing Improvements. Having identified areas of potential savings, improvements can then be implemented in order of their significance. This could be a matter of simply improving operations, or in some eases may mean the use of an automatic control system.These four steps can result in significant dollar savings."

"This paper describes the development of an automated, 70-ton capacity, underground electric trolley truck at Inco Ltd. The purpose of the project is to provide a high capacity and high productivity haulage system to suit continuous loader applications in existing mining horizons where conveyor belt application is not immediately practical. IntroductionWith the start o f a program by Inco in mid-1983 to develop a continuous loader for bulk mining of our hardrock orebodies, the need for a rapid ore transportation system was recognized to match the increased extraction rates planned. Two methods were investigated, truck haulage and conveyor belt. As a result, a conveyor belt system has since been designed and installed with a continuous loader at Stobie Mine and an electric truck has been designed, fabricated and assembled, with shop testing underway. This paper deal s with the latter project. BackgroundMany existing mining horizons which could utilize continuous loaders do not have the straight runs required for conveyor belts. In these situations, truck haulage would be the only alternative of the other transportation methods that would be practical. In order to match the high productivity potential of the continuous loader, however, a more efficient trucking system is required than would be available with conventional diesel powered trucks or with electric truck designs commercially available, or under development. A higher capacity truck and an automated operation is necessary so that the application of additional units to suit increasing haulage distances matches loader output without reducing over-all productivity because of the need for additional operators.A first effort to work with a major electrical manufacturer was unsuccessful and resulted in a project delay of almost one year. In November 1984, an investigation into the concept was reinstigated with UTDC, and an agreement to start design was reached in April 1985."

"Data for underground mine-hoist ropes determined in the Ontario Special Rope Tests were obtained, encoded and analyzed statistically. Prior 10 refined statistical analyses, these data were subjected la characterization studies and preliminary analyses to allow trends to emerge that could be used to guide and facilitate the refined analysis. The data were characterized by determining distribution s for a wide range of variables including remaining strength, service life in terms of lime and hoisting cycles, outer-wire torsion values, elongation during tensile testing, diameter reduction, location of strength loss and the strength lasses associated with corrosion rating and lubrication rating , This paper describes the more important relationships between remaining strength (or, conversely, strength loss) as the dependent variable and some of the principal independent variables mentioned above.IntroductionBoth productivity and safety in underground mines could be improved if mine-heist rope Iife and reliability could be predicted more accurately . As a result, hoist-rope failure processes and their effects on rope life and remaining strength need to be quantified and related in such a way that improved retirement criteria can be developed. This is true whether the failure is incipient or actual or whether the failure mode is by corrosion , wear, fatigue or a combination of these factors."

"Since 1976, Cardinal River Coal s Ltd. has completed mining in eight pits. In each of these pits, at least one wall has failed, none by design, although not totally unexpected, yet there was no loss of production nor risk to personnel or equipment. Cardinal River Coals Ltd. has been successful in implementing a program to cope with failures and now feels justified in adopting more optimistic design parameters.The wall control program at Cardinal River Coals Ltd. is based on the premise that the walls are going to fail, monitoring is to confirm when. The program consists of monitoring slope movements and piezometric levels as well as structural mapping and visual inspections. In case of excessive movement, the frequency and intensity of the monitoring is increased. If a failure is impending, suitable remedial action is undertaken such as cutting down the crest, building up the toe, depressurization of the wall, artificial support, or a combination of the above. If remedial action is not possible, monitoring permits operations to continue up to near the time of failure.At the design stage, the emphasis is on identifying the potential failure mechanisms and the con sequences of failure. Once the potential failure mechanisms are identified, a monitoring system can usually be employed to give sufficient response time, and providing the consequence of failure is not severe and/ or remedial action can be taken to arrest the movements, then it is practical to mine pit slope s which have a higher probability of failure."

"It is quite likely that more than a handful of junior exploration companies will receive some startling news from their accountants this spring when 1989s tax returns are being prepared. These companies could find that, for the first time ever, they will have to write a cheque to the federal government on account of a new federal capital tax which became effective July I, 1989IntroductionMany mining companies which have never had to pay a federal income tax are finding that they indeed have a tax liability for 1989. Non-producing companies, such as junior exploration companies, almost automatically assume that they don't have to pay any income tax. But, a new tax imposed under the Income Tax Act catches especially the company that has no income.Effective July 1, 1989, a federal capital tax (some call it a corporation minimum tax) is payable by any corporate carrying on business in Canada where the corporation has ""taxable capital"" exceeding $10 million. As a result of the popular use of flow-through shares in recent years, many junior exploration companies are finding that their balance sheets show capital stock over $10 million, and that they are consequently caught by the new tax. Further, some of these companies are finding, to their chagrin, that the tax for 1989 was due on February 28, 1990, and that non-deductible interest is ticking away on unpaid taxes."

"Continuous pressure filtration is a modern process for the mechanical dewatering of flotation concentrates of coal and similar coal slurries. This method will give a lower moisture content than classical vacuum filtration, the improvement lying in the range 5% to 15%. Eighteen coal slurries have been examined in this survey. They are representative of a wide spectrum of filtered slurries. IntroductionDuring the last five years, a number of coal slurries have been tested either in the laboratory or with a pilot plant. The test pressure ranged from one to six bar. The results have been evaluated by mean s of a computer. Determination of the filter capacity and the resulting moisture content and energy consumption has been made with respect to the continuous pressure filter, Amafilter construction-type KDF (Fig. I) . Standard sizes of these filters are 60 m2, 90 m2 and 120 m2.The continuous pressure filter is a horizontal filter with a level tank. Six filter axles are mounted on a rotating main shaft, each with a particular number of elements attached. The elements rotate on their axes and move along a circular trajectory. Periodically the elements submerge into and emerge out of the slurry. A constant air pressure is maintained above the suspension, thus providing the pressure gradient necessary for filtration. The filtrate together with the dewatering air flows through the elements into the hollow axle and out of the filter."

Carbonate-rich rocks occur at several localities within the Flin Flon volcanic sequence of the eastern Amisk Lake area. The rocks occur in two areas: as a group of small occurrences on islands within Amisk Lake and as two much larger linear belts running parallel to the regional structure east of Amisk Lake. Mineralogically, the rocks consist of talc and Ca-poor ankerite with occasional graphite. Segregation of these minerals and colour variation impart a well-defined planar fabric to the rocks and where the units are fairly continuous (e.g. Mosher Lake), their trend and attitude suggests a concordant relationship to the volcanics. Major and trace analysis of22 samples confirms the presence of two types, with one type being represented in each of the two areas. Most of the elements studied can be used to characterize the two groups, but three elements in particular give a clear separation: Mg, AI and Ni. Recalculation of the major element analyses, on a water and carbonate-f ree basis, indicates that one group (large concordant bodies with high MgO, high Ni and low AI20.J is altered ultrabasic material of peridotitic or dunitic composition. Because no relict igneous material is observed, and the contacts are apparently very sharp, it is possible that the hydration-carbonization process occurred simultaneously with intrusion, .in a closed system. The other group (small occurrences with relatively low MgO, low Ni and high AI203J represents alteration of basaltic rocks. AIthough some analyses suggest the introduction of calcium, as carbonate, along with the volatiles, the major oxides have remained remarkably stable during the alteration process(es).

The coal mining industry is no exception. Technological problems facing the coal mining industry are basically economic and social. Economic problems are those concerned with the long-term growth and profitability and social problems, with the health and safety of the mine worker and the impact of the mining operation on the environment.Technological innovation can be a key factor in meeting these problems successfully. The general belief is that the information base for technological innovation exists within mining companies and governmental agencies but current industrial and governmental strategies and structures impede the transformation of this knowledge into the mining products and processes required for growth.The purpose of this paper is to determine where Canada is in terms of coal mining on the innovative ladder. The paper as presented: defines innovation and innovative process; gives an historical ""broad brush"" review o f innovation in the industry; and suggests the challenges to be faced in the future."

"The most cost-effective method of placement of the high strength fill used in the Cannon Mine' s overhand cut-and-f ill bench stopes was determined to be truck haulage. Constraint s imposed by the mine layout dictated the use of a truck which could dump its load in a fifteen-foot high drift. The Dux Teledumper truck was selected as the most suitable unit for this application based upon operational and maintenance parameters which included a telescoping, tilting dump box; large load capacity; and robust construction. Development of the truck continues through the cooperation between the manufacturer and user. INTRODUCTIONThe Cannon Mine is situated in the centre of Washington state, approximately midway between the cities of Spokane on the east and Seattle on the west. The mine complex is located three block s south of the Wenatchee city limits at the eastern base of the Cascade Mountain range.Asam era Minerals (U.S.) Inc., with 5I% ownership, operates the Cannon Mine. Breakwater Resources, Ltd. holds the remaining 49%.Annual paroduction is 520 000 tons per year, presently on a 21-shift per week operating schedule for both the mine and the mill.All production is presently won by overhand bench stoping with backfill. Stoping starts with 15-ft high by 24- or 30-ft wide sill cuts driven above and below a stope block . A drop rai se and slot are used to open a bench which is then slabbed toward the open slot. Truck-placed backfill is dumped into the mined - out stope from the upper sill cut. This stoping sequence is repeated until the top of the ore block is reached . The top sill cut is then tightly filled with backfill to minimize subsidence and to provide adequate roof support during extraction of the pillars.Mining equipment consists of hydraulic drills and rubber-tired, diesel scoops and trucks."

"There has been a major evolution of mineral processing technology in the past decade. The evolution has been driven by recognition of broad environmental changes which have impacted various areas of the world. Numerous government regulations have required many mining and mineral processing organizations to introduce changes to reduce the undesirable effects on the environment; many mining companies have voluntarily introduced new technologies and practices which surpass the limits imposed by the regulations. Surprisingly, some of the 'new' technologies are modifications of concepts developed decades earlier. Gravity separation technology is in this category.Mineral Deposits Limited, an Australian company, has been a world leader in the development of mining concepts, reclamation practices and equipment technology that is environmentally suited to today's requirements. This paper relates to equipment used for gravity concentration and electrostatic separation systems, including Reichert cones, spirals, and electrostatic separators. The basic devices and technologies were developed more than forty-five years ago, but use of the systems was quite limited until environmental and conservation practices were recognized and introduced. Spiral concentrators, for example, were patented in the mid-l940s by I.B. Humphreys in Denver , Colorado. The two types of spirals marketed (the Model 24A for minerals and the Model 24C for coal) remained essentially unchanged until expiration of the patents. During this early period most spirals were used in iron-ore wash plants on the Mesabi Range to recover fine iron which previously had been discarded. About the same time sand mining plants in Florida incorporated spirals to recover titanium minerals and zircon from lowgrade beach sands. The Labrador Trough opened new opportunities for spirals when hard-rock iron-ore deposits were developed; approximately 10 000 Model 24A Humphreys spirals were installed between 1958 and 1966. About 5000 spirals of this model are still operating in the same capacity, in spite of the fact that extensive improvements have since been made in gravity separation technology."

"Ontario enjoys the advantage of its proximity to the large industrial market of northeastern North America. Together with Quebec and fifteen nearby U.S. states, an industrial base of more than half the total for both countries is provided by a population of 100 million.Mineral fillers such as barite, calcium carbonate, kaolin, mica, silica and talc are of major importance in the manufacture of paper, paint, plastics, rubber, vinyl tile, carpet backing, putty, caulks, sealants and adhesives. Ontario has all of these minerals, but domestic production falls short of demand in some cases, and mica and kaolin are not produced at all.This paper reviews the market and outlines the distribution of the major filler-consuming plants of northeastern North America. It also identifies the principal producers of filler minerals in the United States and Canada.IntroductionOf all the uses for industrial minerals, mineral fillers are probably the least understood. Originally used primarily to add low-cost bulk to a variety of commodities without seriously affecting their properties, filler minerals have become essential components that enhance and extend the properties of their hosts. Hence the term ""extender"" which, for all practical purposes, is synonymous with ""filler"". Today, fillers and extenders are not solely low-cost additives, but ingredients that provide essential characteristics to the products they fill.The major markets for mineral fillers are paint, paper, plastics, rubber, adhesives and floor coverings. But there are many others: putty, pesticides, wire and cable coatings, caulking and asphaltic compounds, oilcloth, wall-paper, joint cements, inks, sealants and many others. Barite, calcium carbonate, kaolin, mica, silica and talc are among the more important filler minerals discussed in this paper, but there are at least a dozen others. And the increasing practice of coating the mineral surfaces with certain coupling agents or metal stearates is constantly expanding the range of characteristics and hence the marketing opportunities.Whiteness, particle shape, fineness of grind and cost are the principal considerations in selecting a filler, but other characteristics such as weight, opacity, hardness and chemical inertness may be dominant considerations in specific applications."

"This paper deals with the quantitative analysis of mine maintenance records. Based on a case study of dozer engine records, the author suggests an easy method of deriving useful information for managerial decisions in a step-by-step manner.More specifically, the paper deals with the following topics:• determination of the most economical replacement time,• determination of reliability characteristics,• determination of the number of replacements, and• determination of the number of spares.IntroductionThe mining industry collects a lot of information about every aspect of its activities, an example of which appears in Table I. In Table I , the distribution describes the operating hours at failure of 56 different dozer engines used in severe applications. Besides calculating an average and possibly a standard derivation from the data, little else is derived, at least from a statistical point-of-view.More information can be obtained from these records that could help management in the decision-making process.To illustrate this point, the sample data appearing in Table I will be analyzed in detail by making use of well-known concepts in reliability engineering.Distribution of DataTable I represents a distribution obtained from the recorded hours cumulated from the operators' time cards. The operating hours have been divided into fourteen classes for each 1000 hours of engine running, e.g . all engines scoring an operating time of between 1001 and 2000 hours formed a class , those scoring between 2001 and 3000 hours another one, etc. Generally, the class interval should be a multiple of the equipment preventive maintenance check period.The minimum acceptable sample size should be large enough to ensure that the score in each class interval is at least one.
