Recent innovations in cokemaking have been directed toward reducing this cost while simultaneously improving coke quality and expanding the range of coals used in the process. It is also important to meet increasingly stringent environmental legislation.Improvements in coke quality have been achieved by novel blend selection procedures, by charge density control using both selective pulverization and partial briquetting, and by the use of modifying additives.The Canadian Carbonization Research Association provides a focus for Canadian cokemakin g research which has demonstrated these technologies in a series of pilot-scale experiments."

"A program of evaluation of in-mould electromagnetic stirring on the product of a straight-mould, billet continuous casting machine has been carried out. The effects on macrostructure, surface and internal quality, chemistry segregation and mechanical properties on carbon, low-alloy and resulphurized, free-machining steel billets and rolled bars are discussed. Operational aspects as a result of in-mould stirring are highlightedIntroductionA development program on electromagnetic stirring (EMS) in the mould of a continuous caster was started by Ferrco Engineering Limited in 1979, with the first experimental device being developed and installed at Lake Ontario Steel Company. As a result of these initial trials, new designs of in-mould EMS systems have been developed and are currently being used in continuous casters in North America and Europe. The rapid progress which has been made is in large measure due to the fruitful cooperation which has existed between the various parties, including Ferrco, the EMS equipment manufacturer, several operating plants and the University of Toronto.A brief review of some of the basic ' principles of electromagnetic stirring action on solidifying metal, and the landmarks of this process development, will explain the philosophy of this cooperation.From casting practice, it is well known that an equiaxed dendritic structure provides better' material properties than a columnar dendritic structure. Homogeneity of the equiaxed structure leads to better control of material properties, such as strength and ductility. Therefore, many efforts are being made to obtain this structure in continuous casting.The extent of the equiaxed zone is determined to a large degree by convective flow in the liquid. Fluid flow can fragment dendrites in the columnar zone, which then act as nuclei for grains in the equiaxed zone farther down the sump. This process is referred to as dendrite or grain multiplication."

Due to the growing share of electrical cars, the use of lithium ion batteries significantly increased. Recycling of these batteries is essential to safely dispose hazardous materials as well as to recover valuables (Cu, Ni, Co, etc.). In order to optimise the recycling process, accurate information is required on the slag phase equilibria for battery smelting. The slag is a multi-component system containing alumina from the battery cases, silica and lime from fluxes, and manganese and lithium from the electrode materials. The present study accurately determined the phase equilibria in the "MnO"-Al2O3-SiO2 sub-ternary system at metal alloy saturation. Particular attention was given to the accuracy and reliability of the final results by highlighting the different reaction pathways, mass transfer- and reaction mechanisms taking place in the system during experiments. This attention enabled improved experimental methodology and measurements. Based on the present study, further measurements will be undertaken in the quaternary "MnO"-Al2O3-CaO-SiO2 system at low "MnO" concentrations, which closely represents the future recycling industrial slags.

"Brunswick's primary flotation circuit (CuPb) produces a low grade concentrate containing considerable amounts of undesirable sphalerite and pyrite. To determine the cause of the poor selectivity, a series of Quantitative Mineralogical Analyses (QMA) were performed on several CuPb circuit streams. It was observed that significant fractions of sphalerite and pyrite reporting to the concentrate was liberated, meaning that their depression was not complete. The study highlighted the need for some R&D efforts to be spent in sulphide flotation fundamentals.IntroductionThe viability of many mining projects strongly depends on the performance of their concentrators. More than ever, competitive grade concentrate and high metal recoveries are criteria of paramount economic importance. The selectivity of solid/solid separation processes used in concentrators must be maintained at high levels or continuously improved.Flotation is the solid/solid separation process used by most base metal producers. In spite of its low operating cost, flotation remains a very complex process. To make it selective, precise reagent dosages and electrochemical conditions must be maintained. The difficulty in controlling flotation lies in the numerous heterogeneous reactions that can take place between the different solid, liquid and gaseous phases involved. This complex chemistry makes flotation selectivity difficult to understand and, therefore, to improve from a theoretical point of view.Brunswick Mining and Smelting, near Bathurst N.B., operates a 10500 tpd concentrator which produces four concentrates through five stages of sequential flotation (Figure I). Various reagents are added at key process stages while the ore undergoes different electrochemical conditions. Although the selectivity is important at all stages, the performance of the very first separation, the CuPb circuit, is the most critical. It is here where mineral misplacement to the wrong stream has the greatest economic consequences."

"In 1989, improved milling and recoveries resulted in a record production of 7 722 200 Ib Nb2P5 at the Niobec Mine. At the beginning of 1990, proven and probable reserves stood at 11 952 000 tons grading 0.65% Nb205. This year, the world steel market has slowed and as a result, niobium consumption is down. Consequently, production at the mine dropped 14% for the second quarter.IntroductionThe Niobec Mine is located approximately nine miles northwest of Chicoutimi, Quebec, (Fig. I). After ten years of production, the Niobec Mine is the only operating niobium mine in North America and the second largest producer of niobium in the world after Brazil.The Niobec Mine is a joint venture held equally by Teck Corporation and Carnbior. Teck Corporation operates the mine while Cambior is responsible for marketing and selling the niobium pentoxide concentrate (Nb2P5).The deposit was discovered in 1964 following an airborne radiometric survey in search of uranium. However, mining of the deposit did not begin until 1976. The initial production capacity of 1500 tons per day was increased several times to the present capacity of 2450 tons . The deposit is considered as an ample source of pyrochlore concentrate for at least 15 years at the present production rate.Niobium, also known as columbium, is a greyish-white metal used primarily as an alloy in various steels and other metals. The use of niobium in alloys heightens tensile strength and improves corrosion resistance while at the same time reducing the weight of the alloy. Niobium is also used in the fabrication of steel for the aerospace, automobile, and oil and gas pipeline industries. Although substitutes for niobium exist, their use often results in diminished performance and net cost increases."

Confronted with this prevailing attitude, Canada's mining industry starts out with two strikes against it in its bid to attract and hold on to its fair share of available work force.Behavioural scientists have, for decades, been seeking answers to the questions:• ""Why do people work?""• ""Why do people choose a particular occupation?""• ""Why do people choose a particular organization?""• ""Why do people leave one organization for another?""• ""Why do some people stay in an organization?""• ""Why do some people work harder than others?""Their answers to these questions, although tentative and often contradictory, are being used by more and more organizations to solve people problems. Few industries can afford to ignore them, least of all, perhaps, the mining industry.Consider the following developments:I. General Motors and the United Auto Workers turn around the car assembly plant in Tarrytown, New York in seven years from the plant with the poorest labour relations and production record to one of the best under a program referred to as ""improving the quality of work life.""2. "T.L. Leaching ProcessCommercial PerformanceSociedad Minera Pudahuel Ltda. (SMP) has been innovating in the copper producing field with the commercial application of the Thin Layer (T .L.) leaching process in its two operating division s: Lo Aguirre and La Cascada. Since November 1980, SMP' s Lo Aguirre Division has been producing high-purity copper cathodes at a nominal rate of about 16,500 metric tonnes / year, by mean s of the new route of T.L. leaching, followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning (TLlSX/EW). This has been the first commercial application on T .L. technology in the world, and the only commercial application in Chile for solvent extraction and electrowinning.By mid -1980, SMP acquired Sagasca Mining Co., renaming it as La Cascad a Division. The existing vat leaching facilities were modified to apply T.L. in the same old vats. The existing scrap iron cementation recovery circuit was kept running for the continuing production of copper precipitates. The modifications in the leaching circuit allowed shorter treatment cycles with a lower acid consumption and consequently, copper product ion increased from a previous historical high of 12,000-13,000 metric tonnes /year to a new level of about 22,000 metric tonnes/ year . These changes have been in operation since March 1981.T.L. Leaching commercial performance, both at Lo Aguirre (TL / SX /EW) and at La Cascada (TL/cementation), has been presented in several recent publications. Real operating parameters and process requirement s were reviewed in detail. A breakdown for TL / SX/ EW economics was also published based on Lo Aguirre' s performance during 1982(41."

"Conventional exploration strategies identify many mineral deposits as potentially interesting, although only a few of them turn out to be of economic importance. In the context of exploration for sulphide nickel deposits in the Canadian Shield, a decisional model, based on a statistical study of parameters relative to nickel deposits as well as to barren sulphide occurences, has been developed.Because such geophysical variables as gravimetry, aeromagnetism and topography could be related to the relative importance of nickel-bearing deposits, a statistical analysis of 13 such variables was carried out for 98 targets which were considered promising after conventional exploration. Among these 98 targets are36 sulphide nickel deposits in the Canadian Shield and 62 drill-tested non-economic occurrences. The results of this study led to the development of a linear logistic model that permits evaluation, for each of the targets, of the probability of finding a nickel deposit of potential commercial interest. This decisional model can thus complement conventional exploration strategies.RésuméLes stratégies conventionnelles d'exploration définissent un très grand nombre de cibles comportant un inténet minier potentiel dont seules quelques-unes correspondent à des gisements économiquement importants. Dans Ie cadre de l'exploration des dépôts nickélifères du Bouclier Canadien, nous avons défini un modelé de décision fonde sur l'étude statistique de divers paramètres relatifs tant aux gisements d'importance qu'aux cibles dites stériles.Ayant fait l'hypothèse que certaines variables géophysiques (gravimétrie, aéromagnétisme et topographie) peuvent suffire à fournir des indications sur l'importance relative d'un gisement nickélifère, nous avons entrepris l'analyse statistique de 13 variables évaluées sur un échantillon de 98 cibles considérées comme potentiellement intéressantes par les stratégies conventionnelles d'exploration. Ces 98 cibles se composent de 36 dépôt nickélifères d ‘importance recontrés sur tout Ie Bouclier Canadien et de 62 cibles stériles reconnues par forage. "It is generally felt that flow-through shares face a bleak future under the set of tax rules proposed in the federal government's tax reform white paper. Industry and government circles are beginning to give thought to alternatives to flow through as a mechanism for facilitating equity financing in the exploration industry. Despite suggestions that grants and tax credits may someday be on the table, industry is sticking to its position that there is no substitute for flow-through. Alternatives toFlow-throughProposals in the federal government's tax reform white paper have cast significant doubt on the ability of the mining industry to raise risk capital after 1989by way of flow-through shares. There is serious concern that introduction of the ""cumulative net investment loss"" (CNIL) rules, the phase-out of the mining explorati0! 1 depletion allowance (MEDA), and the Increased capital gains inclusion (750/0 versus 50%, at present) will make the economics of flow-through so unattractive after 1989 that these shares will hold little appeal to most investors. The question might be raised, then, as to what alternatives exist by way of tax or other government assistance that could help the exploration sector.The purpose of this paper is to survey the types of government incentives that could be of some value to explorationists and to the mining industry in general. For the past several years, flow-through has been in the spotlight insofar as incentives to the exploration industry are concerned. Other potentially useful and attractive incentives have been partially hidden in the shadow of flow-through. These incentives, in certain circumstances, can be of considerable benefit, and should not be ignored."

Laboratory studies had shown that the magnetite contained in serpentine asbestos ore was not uniformly distributed. Ore particles containing chrysotiye fiber responded to a magnetic f field; particles containing little or no chrysotile were essentially non-magnetic. Larger-scale tests, run with a magnetic pulley being fed various asbestos samples ranging in size from 1/4 inch to 5 inches, confirmed that magnetic separation could be used as a concentration step in an asbestos mill. Magnetic concentration was installed at the Black Lake and National mills of Lac d'Amiante du Quebec and has allowed the extraction of lower-grade ore, increasing the life of the mines. In addition, preconcentration early in the flowsheet increased the value of the feed to the fiber recovery section. An increase in fiber production was achieved, as well as a decrease in maintenance costs due to removal of flow-grade tailings early in the flowsheet. Magnetic concentration of a coarse tailings from the mill resulted in recovery of additional fiber previously discarded to tailings.

"Mining research at CANMET is delivered by the Mining Research Laboratories Division (MRL), with facilities in Sydney, Nova Scotia; Bells Comers, Elliot Lake, and Sudbury, Ontario; and Val d'Or, Quebec. This paper gives an overview of the work of the Division as of early 1993. An addendum, at the end of this paper, describes the organizational changes that will take place in April 1994. IntroductionCANMET, the acronym for the Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology, is the name by which the organization founded in 1907 as the federal Mines Branch is presently known. The name was changed in 1974, in order to give recognition to the importance of both minerals and energy technologies in the activities of the Branch. Further reorganizations have taken place since 1987. As a result of these, CANMET has assumed the status of a Sector (equivalent to the Geological Survey of Canada) and has been organized into four branches.The organization as a whole functions in an environment of semi-matrix management. Some of the ""line"" Divisions report to Directors-General for the appropriate branches while other, larger divisions, report directly to the Assistant Deputy Minister.The second dimension of the organizational matrix is composed of a number of ""staff' divisions which report to the DirectorGeneral for Policy and Planning. Each of these Divisions performs a function which is common to all of the ""line"" divisions. For example, the Research Projects Office is responsible for monitoring the range of research activities of CANMET and for recommending allocations of funds for both research contracts and operating budgets. The Library and Documentation Services Division is responsible for CANMET publications and information services. Likewise, the Engineering and Technical Services Division provides support through, among other services, the construction of specialized laboratory equipment."

Agenda ?Introduction ?Geology ?Mining ?Metallurgy ?Process, Layout ?Environmental Background ?Kinross Gold Corporation owns the Lobo-Marte gold property, located in Region III of northern Chile. ?The property is close to two other Kinross mines, Maricunga 50kmto the south and La Coipa 60km to the north, plus a regional office in Copiapo and district level operating synergies are expected. ?Lobo and Marte were discovered in the early 1980s and are intrusion-hosted, porphyry-type precious metal deposits, typical of the Maricunga District. ?The Marte open pit heap leach mine was in commercial production in late 1988, but was suspended in February 1992 as it did not meet forecasted production levels and recoveries. ?Kinross plans to recover ore from the Lobo and Marte deposits through an open-pit, heap leach47,000tonne per day operation.

"An often over-looked component in the assessed value of a mining property is the value derived from the ability of the operator to limit financial losses during adverse economic times (i.e. low market price, high energy prices, etc.) by suspending operations. Overlooking the value of this type of operating flexibility when conducting mine investment analysis may negatively bias the risk profile for the investment by over estimating the investment's downside potential, thereby effectively undervaluing the investment. This paper illustrates the nature of the value of operating flexibility and discusses how it may be explicitly quantified within the context of conducting stochastic mine investment analysis. IntroductionMining properties are evaluated using an array of techniques ranging from simplistic non-discounted payback calculation s to sophisticated, discounted-stochastic simulation. Stochastic simulation analysis is perhaps the most robust mine investment analysis technique as it not only provides an estimate of the expected value of the property, but also quantifies the associated risks (for examples of stochastic mine investment analysis, see: Billingsley and Yaychuk, 1986; Gentry and O'Neil, 1984; Munro, 1977; or Harris, 1970).The quantification of risk is important as it provides the necessary yardstick required to allocate the corporation's resources efficiently. Resources are said to be allocated efficiently when the corporation's expected long-term financial reward is maximized while at the same time minimizing its risk (see Hertz, 1968; or Markowitz, 1952 for in depth discussions on efficiency as it relates to investment policy). The efficient allocation of resources should be the objective of any rational corporation. Therefore, rational corporations should employ stochastic evaluation techniques when screening their investments."

"The consolidated rockfill at Kidd Creek Mines is a weakly cemented, minus 15 cm aggregate which posed problems for conventional drill/blast drifting methods. Consequently, lateral access to mineable ore adjacent to backfilled areas was gained by drifting around the fill in shattered rock.In mid-1987, Kidd Creek Mines began to investigate means of mechanically excavating drifts in backfill . The results of this investigation led to a trial program using a Dosco MK-2A Roadheader to excavate the required drifts in backfill.The roadheader was tested at Kidd Creek Mines from July to November 1988, in 28-735 X /C to be used as the top access for drilling and blasting 32-74/ ST. During this period, the roadheader excavated 54 m of a 4.3 m by 3. 7 m arched drift in backfill. Cutting rates over the period averaged 0.8 m/cutting hour as projected with a daily high of 2.0 m/cutting hour.Wood-lagged 2-piece steel arches on 1.2 m centres were chosen as ground support for the trial. Shotcrete will be tested in a roadheader drive for its potential to improve productivity by replacing the steel arches.The trial program included evaluations of point-attack picks, two sizes of cutter motor, 20 MPa (3000 psi) water-assisted cutting, cuttings-removal systems, and environmental control devices."

"Stillwater Mining Company (SMC), a partnership of Chevron Resources and Manville Corporation, produces a copper-nickel, platinum-palladium flotation concentrate at its Nye, Montana mine. The concentrate is then toll processed in Europe. Recognizing the economic advantage of treating the concentrates at the mine site and of retaining this strategic resource in the United States, the Company commissioned Tolltreck International Limited and International Process Research Corporation to conduct pilot scale smelting tests with a flowsheet that would maximize metal recoveries while satisfying the environmental requirements of operations at Stillwater.Primary smelting was conducted in a single phase, 50 k W, submerged-arc, electric furnace. Refining the product mattes to copper-nickel ""white-metal""; containing approximately 2% iron, was accomplished in a Tolltreck, IV-litre, top blown rotary converter. Over-all platinum and palladium recoveries were approximately 99%; copper and nickel recoveries averaged 94%. INTRODUCTION(l-4)Stillwater Mining Company (SMC) a partnership of Chevron Resources and Manville, operates a copper-nickel, platinum palladium mine and concentrator at Nye, Montana, located in the valley of the Stillwater River, approximately, 100 km southwest of Billings. It is North America's only primary producer of these precious metals. The Stillwater area was mined for chrome ore during World War U and the Korean War, but it was not until 1961 that attention was drawn to the similarities between the Stillwater Complex and the Bushveld Complex of South Africa with its deposits of platinum group metals.A concentrated search for platinum was begun by Manville Corporation in 1967. Its presence, together with palladium, in mineable quantities was confirmed in the period 1976-1978, and the first partnership to develop the deposits was formed by Manville and Chevron in 1979. Anaconda joined the group in 1983, and in 1985 its share was purchased by Lac Minerals. In 1988 the interests of Lac Minerals were purchased by Chevron and Manville.The decision to develop the mine and build a concentrator was made in 1986. Construction began in the fall of that year, and the first concentrate was produced six months later, in March 1987. Underground mining is done in a two-shift, five day- week operation. Since startup, the concentrator has operated on a 24 hour/day, 7 day/week schedule, treating an average of 635 tonnes of ore per day and producing approximately 10 tonnes of concentrate."

"Within six months from award of a project management contract, Les Mines Dumagami Limitée, Cadillac, Quebec, was operating its new hoisting facility. This was accomplished with less than a six-week shutdown of mine production while still maintaining shaft access for underground maintenance.The work involved installing a refurbished /3.5 ft diameter double drum hoist, replacing a timber headframe with a newsteel headframe, increasing the ore bin capacity from 500tons to 1000 tons, constructing a new substation, and upgrading related facilities.This paper describes the work and methods used by various contractors, Les Mines Dumagami Limitée and J.S. Redpath Mining Consultants Limited to bring this project to a successful completion. It discusses the history of the project from proposal stage through to the design, procurement, scheduling, and construction management. The paper also comments on problems that were encountered and the methods used to overcome them.IntroductionThe Donald J. Laronde Mine of Les Mines Dumagami Limitée (Dumagarni), a gold and copper producer, is located in northwestern Quebec, approximately half way between Val d'Or and Rouyn. The mine started production in the spring of 1988 and the first gold bar was poured in June 1988.Following a request by Dumagami, on February 22, 1989, J.S. Redpath Mining Consultants Limited(Redpath) delivered a proposal to increase hoisting capabilities from 1500 tpd to a minimum of 2500tpd. Although various concepts were considered, Redpath proposed a new hoist house along the same shaft axis as the existing hoist, and located on the site of the existing substation. They would then provide a new substation, replace the headframe with a largersteel structure , gain extra storage capacities by increasing the bin heights, and raising the roof of the bin house accordingly.Although underground mining would have to be stopped for a month, the mill production would be maintained by feed from Dumagami's open pit.Figure 1 shows the original plant layout and Figure 2 represents the general arrangement after the project was completed . Table 1 compares the original hoisting facilities to the new facilities.On March 2, Dumagami awarded Redpath a contract that included preliminary engineering, detailed engineering, procurement and contract administration, and later added construction management. The preliminary engineering refined the initialconcept, selected major equipment, and prepared schedules and capital cost estimates for the total project."

"Ground stresses are one of the significant factors in the context of rockbursts and underground instability at some hard rock mines in Canada. Overcoring strain relief measurements using triaxial strain cells were performed at several mine sites to provide stress data for stability evaluations and mine design. Pre-mining stress determinations carried out at depths between 60 m to 1890 m resulted in the following average stress gradients:Maximum horizontal stress, s Hmax = 8.18 + 0.0422 MPa/m depthMinimum horizontal stress, s Hmin = 3.64 + 0.0276 MPa/m depthAverage horizontal stress, s Ha = 5.91 + 0.0349 MPa/m depthVertical stress, a; = 0.0266 ± 0.008 MPa/m depthThe maximum and minimum horizontal compressive stresses, with an average ratio of J.75 ± 0.45, prevail in east-west and northerly directions, respectively. Horizontal compressive stresses in excess of vertical overburden load were determined, indicating large variations in ratios to a depth of about 1000 m with decreasing trend toward depth.From present data, a particular regional zoning for the magnitude and direction of horizontal stress fields cannot be outlined.A common feature at mines with near vertical orebodies is that the maximum horizontal stress acts perpendicular to strike while the minimum horizontal stress is aligned on-strike. The vertical stress components approach the gravitational overburden load."
