"Induced polarization/resistivity and magnetometer surveys have been carried out over the Casmo molybdenite deposit in mountainous terrain of northern British Columbia. Molybdenite occurs in quartz-bearing fractures with or without pyrite along a zone of hydrothermal alteration and intense fracturing, believed to be a northerly dipping fault zone, within medium-grained equigranular and porphyritic quartz monzonite.The molybdenite-bearing zone is characterized by a significant resistivity low, a metal factor high and a subtle IP low flanked by highs outside the mineralized area. Magnetic trends, indicated by a magnetometer survey, generally parallel the zone and strike direction of the different intrusive phases, and have been helpful in delineating contacts and faults in the area.IntroductionThe Casmo molybdenite deposit is 6 km southwest of the asbestos mining town of Cassiar in northern British Columbia, at an elevation of 1,550 metres. Molybdenite was first discovered during the early 1950s and the first important exploration work was done in 1964. Between 1964 and 1971, about 25,000 feet of drilling was done by various operators, as a result of which 33.7 million tons of molybdenite ore was drill indicated at a grade of 0.123%. In 1979, Shell Canada Resources entered into an option agreement with the former operator, New Jersey Zinc Corporation. Shell completed 27,000 feet of diamond drilling between 1979 and 1980 and ha s reported 75 million tonnes of drill-indicated ore with an average grade of 0.13% MoS2• This paper is a case history of IP I resistivity and magnetometer surveys done over the Casmo deposit during 1979 and 1980."

Iron removal is a common procedure in hydrometallurgy of non-ferrous metallic ores. Chemical precipitation and solvent extraction are currently the main methods employed for separation of iron from copper leach solution. However, chemical precipitation methods have the problem of producing large amounts of iron precipitates, and/or requiring high temperature and high pressure conditions for precipitation. The precipitates are difficult to separate from the solution. Emulsification is a general problem for solvent extraction, which causes loss of extractants and contamination of the electrolyte. A common problem for solvent extraction and chelating ion exchange processes is the difficult iron stripping process. Therefore, finding an efficient and environmentally friendly method for iron removal is of great significance. In this paper, new processes of using ion exchange resins to remove iron from copper leach solution have been investigated. Salicylic acid, amino carboxylic acid, amino phosphonic acid and hydroxy-oxime resins were employed to adsorb iron from a simulated copper leach solution containing 40 g/L of Cu2+ and 36 g/L of Fe3+. It was found that a hydroxy-oxime resin, named Z-Fe, has excellent adsorption selectivity on Fe3+. Desorption behavior of the resin was studied by two step elution using dilute H2SO4 and oxalic acid solution, respectively. After optimizing the adsorption-elution processes, the extent of removal of iron from the simulated copper leach solution using resin Z-Fe was 90%, while copper recovery could reach 100% in closed circuit processing.

Single-pass hybrid laser-arc welding of 10-mm thick cast plates of CA6NM, a low carbon martensitic stainless steel, was carried out in butt joint configuration using a continuous wave fiber laser at its maximum power of 5.2 kW over welding speeds ranging from 0.75 m/min to 1.2 m/min. The microstructures from the fusion zone to the heat affected zone and base metal were characterized after post-weld tempering at 600°C for 1 hour. From optical and scanning electron microscopy examination, the fusion zone was observed to mainly consist of tempered lath martensite and some residual delta-ferrite. The mechanical properties including microindentation hardness, ultimate tensile strength and Charpy impact energy were evaluated in the post-weld tempered condition and correlated to the microstructures and defects. The ultimate tensile strength and Charpy impact energy values of all the fully penetrated welds in the tempered condition were acceptable according to ASTM, ASME and industrial specifications. The failure mechanisms during tensile deformation and Charpy impact loading were examined by scanning electron microscopy, fractography and optical metallographic analysis near the fracture origin.

"The removal of iron asgoethite from the high iron bearing solutions generated in zinc hydrometallurgy using a strong airflow device was investigated. The influence of oxygen flow, copper ion concentration, temperature and reaction time on iron precipitation as goethite was studied. The optimum conditions were: oxygen flow 0.2-0.35m3/h, copper ion concentration 0.25-0.5g/L, temperature 80-90oC, zinc oxide powder neutralizing agent and a reaction time of5to 7hours. Under the optimal conditions, the Fe2+concentration was reduced to 0.025g/L after iron precipitation, and the goethite residue contained 38.7wt.%Fe. The SEM and XRD analyses showed that the iron was present as well formed FeOOH crystals in the iron residue, and the amount of iron sulphate was very low. Production practice shows that, when the average iron concentration in the feed solution was 11.61g/L and 4.08g/L after precipitation, the weight of iron removed was 1,439kg/day. When the average iron concentration in the feed solution was 14.51g/L and 2.73g/L after precipitation, the weight of iron removed was 2,454kg/day. This represents a ~70 percent increase in iron removal.INTRODUCTIONThe objective of iron removal is to produce a small volume of iron residue, and our industrial goethite process meets this requirement. The high Fe(II) solution in our reactor isoxidized/hydrolyzed to precipitate goethite and the precipitate is sent to a pyro metallurgical furnace for final residue treatment. Some literature discusses (DengYong-guiet al., 2008;Meiguang-guiet al., 2001;Zhongzhu-qianet al., 1980) research on iron hydrolysis; one of the reported rate limiting parameters was the low availability of the oxidant when using air and another was the inhomogeneous air distribution. There are two iron hydrolysis-goethite precipitation methods; the Electrolytic Zinc process (EZ) and the Vieille Montagne process (VM) (Lei Xiang, 2006; Xuguo-qiang, 2007;ZhaoYonget al.,2005). The EZ method hydrolyzes the Fe3+directly to FeOOH. The weakness of the EZ process is the low recovery rate of the associated minor metals. The VM method reduces the iron to the ferrous state and then oxidizes the Fe(II)to Fe(III),with simultaneous hydrolysis/precipitation of the Fe(III) as FeOOH. Before iron hydrolysis, the minor metals, such as indium, could be selectively precipitated, because Fe(II)requires a high pH for hydrolysis. The objective of this paper is to present, from a practical perspective, a review of the most relevant maintenance procedures that are accepted or prescribed to be the most effective in optimising service life potential and to ensure continued safe use of steel wire ropes for shaft mining applications. The paper will address the most common operational issues encountered in the care and operation of shaft ropes for both conventional drum hoists and multi-rope friction winders. For each distinct maintenance procedure presented, a limited amount of theory is discussed to identify the underlying mechanisms at play that must be addressed and to emphasize the logical basis for the recommended course of action. It is recognised that each installation is unique and that the recommended maintenance procedures may not always be practical or cost effective from an operations standpoint under select circumstances, however the intent remains to promote industry best practices for the knowledge and benefit of the mine hoisting community, from experienced maintenance personnel to new entrants to the industry alike.

"The six mineable coal seams at Quintette Coal Limited (QCL) vary in thickness from 0.75 m to 9.5 m and include waste partings varying from 0.2 m to 4 m thick. They are highly faulted and folded in some areas and dip angles range from horizontal to 90 degrees. Due to this variation in thickness and orientation of the seams, several different mining methods are used to economically recover the coal. The key to QCL's success depends on the timely collection of detailed geology data and on mine planning which allows selection of the best method of mining to achieve maximum coal recovery with minimum dilution and cost. This paper will describe the various methods of mining employed and the criteria used to select them. IntroductionThe unique challenge in mining at Quintette Coal Limited (QCL) is to extract large quantities of coal and waste, from a complex orebody, with constricted areas for mining and waste disposal. This challenge dictates the mining of as many as four 10 m benches per year, through complicated coal structures, from three separate open pits with a total of 19coal seams. This total is made up of 5 seams at Mesa, 8 seams at Wolverine and 6 seams at Shikano (Fig. 1).Computer-aided mine planning and scheduling is carried out on a routine basis to ensure the prudent selection of methods of mining, to produce plans which ensure delivery of appropriately blended raw coals to the plant, and to coordinate disposal of large quantities of waste.Several methods of mining are applied simultaneously, and as a result coal and waste are released at different rates from twelve to fifteen mining faces. "This paper describes the sinking of a circular concrete ventilation shaft through 110feet of water-bearing overburden. The brine circulation freezing method was used to stabilize the walls during excavation. In order to take advantage of the cold winter weather, a custom-built heat exchanger (natural radiator) was installed in place of the standard mechanical refrigeration plant.IntroductionIn the late fall of 1979, Les Mines Selbaie awarded a contract to the firm of 1.S. Redpath Limited to sink a ventilation shaft on its property in northwestern Quebec. The shaft was to be sunk through 110 feet of water-bearing overburden and approximately 90 feet of rock to a final depth of 200 feet below surface. The water table was measured at 16 feet below the surface elevation.After examining the soils report and diamond drill core from the shaft area, Redpath came to the conclusion that freezing was the best way to stabilize the overburden for sinking. LocationThe mine site is 420 statute miles due north of Toronto, just east of the Ontario/Quebec border (Fig. 1). Access to the site is provided by a development road built by the Quebec government from the Matagami/lames Bay Highway. History of Ground Freezing In the Mining IndustryIn 1862, shortly after the development of mechanical refrigeration, a mine shaft was sunk through an artificially frozen water-bearing formation in the United Kingdom. The first application of ground freezing in North America was for a Michigan iron ore shaft in 1888. Since that time, the freezing method has been used to sink hundreds of shafts throughout the world. Its best known application was to sink sixteen shafts through the Blairmore Formation in Saskatchewan.The same method has been used in every case. It involves chilling a calcium chloride brine solution and circulating the brine in concentric pipes, spaced between 3 and 6 feet around the shaft perimeter and usually 4 to 5 feet from the limits of the proposed shaft excavation."

"As an alternative to conventional dewatering by vacuum filtration and oil-fired rotary dryers, Brunswick Mining conducted extensive pilot-scale testwork on its copper, lead, zinc and bulk concentrates using a Larox Oy (Finland) automatic pressure filter. The results showed that pressure filtration readily produced final cake moistures of 6-8.5 per cent on this very fine sulphide material.An in-depth analysis examines pressure filtration in terms of metallurgical performance and projects energy savings of 78 per cent for pressure filters over the current dewatering operation. Potential energy and operating cost reductions are also estimated.IntroductionVacuum filters followed by oil-fired rotary dryers are one of the most common means of dewatering mineral concentrates. They represent, however, a level of technology which is exceedingly wasteful in terms of manpower, space utilization equipment and fossil fuel dependence. In addition, the use of thermal dryers is leading to increased environmental concerns both in plant and out.These were the primary factors which prompted Brunswick Mining to consider alternative dewatering methods as the existing equipment came up for replacement and upgrading. In late 1979, company engineers were encouraged by automatic Larox pressure filters seen at several Scandinavian operations. Subsequent laboratory tests by the manufacturer (Larox Oy of Finland) on several concentrate samples were sufficiently promising for Brunswick and Noranda to lease a trailer mounted filter-lab unit and a technician from Larox for a five-week period. Extensive on-site testwork on all four Brunswick concentrates (zinc, lead, copper and 'bulk' lead-zinc) confirmed the potential of pressure filtration."

"The effect of composition and process variables on the properties of Marmet and modified Ni-Hard slugs will be discussed. The effect of shape on the over-all performance of grinding media and its relationship to the end product has been investigated and these results will be reviewed. The cost effectiveness of slugs versus balls has been well documented under various operating conditions and this will be presented in detail. IntroductionThe selection of grinding media is based on the cost-to-wear ratio combined with the consideration that it must stand repeated impacts without breaking. The specific consumption of grinding balls and slugs depend s primarily on their microstructure, which, in turn, is controlled by chemical composition and by the processing condition s to which they are subjected during manufacture.The first part of the paper deals with the optimization of alloy content to produce cast iron slugs with microstructures consisting essentially of marten site and carbide and with hardnesses of 650 B.H.N. and higher. The second part deals with the use of cast iron slugs to replace forged steel balls in milling operations. Tests indicate that the shape of the media has little if any effect on results and that the hardness and microstructure of grinding media will determine its relative performance. Where price is equal under similar milling conditions, the cost effectiveness of cast iron slugs is superior to that of forged steel balls.In order to understand the role of alloying elements in cast irons, it is judicious to consider the microstructural changes which occur during solidification and subsequent cooling, particularly from above the eutectoid temperature. Solidification starts with the formation and growth of dendrites of austenite. As temperature decreases, an eutectic nucleates and grows between the primary austenite dendrites. Immediately after solidification, the structure consists of proeutectic austenite and of the eutectic of primary carbides and austenite. On cooling to room temperature, austenite can be retained or transformed to pearlite, bainite, martensite or mixtures thereof. It is necessary to prevent decomposition of austenite into pearlite by adjusting the alloy content. For best abrasion resistance, the microstructure at room temperature should consist essentially of martensite and carbide. These types of irons are known as ""martensitic irons "". Depending on the carbon content of the austenite and cooling rate, "" as-cast"" martensitic irons will contain different proportions of martensite and retained austenite. The more carbon in solution in the austenite, the lower is the temperature at which the martensitic transfoemation takes place. By the time room temperature is reached ., the transformation is seldom complete, and the end product is generally a mixture of martensite and retained austenite."

"This paper provides a bird's eye view of the pattern of gold discoveries since 1823, the year of Canada's first gold find, up to 1983. Within this 160-year period, more gold was discovered in Canada during the last ten-year period (1973-1982) than during any previous decade. The record suggests that the potential for further major gold discoveries is high, which bodes welt f or the future of Canadian gold mining.IntroductionCanada has an impressive history as a gold producer. Since 1921 we have occupied second or third place among the world 's gold producing nations, after South Africa and most of the time the U.S.S.R. Canadian gold production over the last hundred years has added up to some 6 per cent of all-time world production.The sharp rise in the price of gold in the 1970s led to a surge of gold exploration, which in turn resulted in the discovery of significant quantities of gold in Canada. How do these recent discoveries rate in comparison with those of the more distant past? For example, are the quantities of gold in notable discoveries of recent year s, such as Hemlo and Detour, in the same league with the amounts of gold discovered around 1910 in the Porcupine and Kirkland Lake district s of Ontario? Can the combined gold content of the recent discoveries be likened to that o f the almost 40 major Canadian gold deposits, along with numerous smaller ones, discovered in Canada during the 1920s and 1930s? What are the implications of the more recent gold discovery record for future rate s of gold discovery in Canada?This paper attempts to glean answers to such questions from an overview of the period that begins in 1823, the year of Canada's first gold discovery. Gold deposits come in two major types: placer deposits and lode deposits in solid rock . Placer gold is distributed in sand and gravel. "Simulation techniques may be used to optimize existing processes and plant operations, and in plant design at the engineering study stage of a project . This paper describes the latter application, using a computer, to optimize the concentrate stockpile requirements of a modern copper smelter.A large open-pit mining operation is envisaged and it is assumed that copper concentrate is smelted in two flash furnaces. The proposed mining plan gives rise to metaffurgical considerations in smelting which dictate that concentrate blending is carried out in the early years of operation in order to eliminate wide variations in the grade of concentrate charged to the furnaces . Stockpiling facilities are therefore necessary for blending purposes and also to provide a strategic reserve of concentrate to ensure continuity of concentrator and smelting operations.The objective of the study is to determine the optimum size of concentrate stockpile required to take account of both metaffurgical and strategic considerations. Two separate simulation models are developed to achieve this objective. The first model is used to determine the minimum size of stockpile necessary for blending purposes to smooth out variations in concentrate grade between 15 - 60% Cu, with associated 34 6% Fe, respectively, and ensure that the concentrate fed to the furnaces does not faff below 12% Fe, which is considered a minimum for good smeltability.The second simulation model covers a projected three-year operating period and indicates the maximum size of stockpile which is likely to develop during scheduled and unscheduled shutdown periods in the concentrator and smelter.Covered storage volume and conveying facilities for the optimum size of concentrate stockpile can be designed based on the results generated by the simulation models."

The Outotec Flash Smelting process is widely used in primary copper production. A layer of slag on top of matte (copper–iron sulphide melt) creates a barrier through which matte droplets descend. Droplets of different sizes settle through the layer at different rates, which increases possibility of copper losses as smaller matte droplets may be removed with the slag. In this work CFD-DEM (computational fluid dynamics – discrete element method) coupling was used to simulate matte droplets settling through the slag during slag tapping. Discrete droplets and slag flow were simulated with DEM and CFD, respectively. This new approach enables tracking and solving movement and interactions of individual droplets. User-defined models were created to take coalescence and reaction kinetics into account. Coalescence created larger droplets, while the reactions decreased droplet size and increased its density. Drag caused funnelling effect, which pulled droplets towards the centre line of the descending cluster. This research is the only study known by the present authors in modelling liquid-liquid systems with the CFD-DEM coupling. Simulating coalescence and chemical reactions for discrete droplets enables more realistic simulations. However, CFD- DEM simulations are computationally resource intensive already without additional models, so a full scale industrial settler modelling still waits for further increase in computer performance. INTRODUCTION Flash smelting is a method used in copper and nickel production. In the flash smelting process, oxidation of sulphides in a concentrate is used to release energy needed to smelt the feed. In the process, copper matte is formed. Matte has copper content in the range of 55 – 70% (Sridhar, Toguri, & Simeonov, 1997), the rest is mainly sulphur and iron but has still many other impurities (Taskinen, Seppälä, Laulumaa, & Poijärvi, 2001). Oxidized iron forms iron-silicate slag while SO2 is collected for acid production (Davenport & Partelpoeg, 2015). The Outotec flash smelting furnace (FSF) can be divided in four major component: concentrate burner, reaction shaft, settler and uptake. Concentrate, flux and oxygen enriched air are injected into the reactor through the concentrate burner. The mixture then reacts in the reaction shaft forming matte and slag, which are collected in the settler, while off-gases flow out of the reactor through uptake for heat and dust recovery, and SO2 collection for H2SO4 production. The matte and slag form separate layers due to immiscibility and density difference. Raw material feed is continuous, but the matte and the slag are tapped periodically. A flash smelting furnace is depicted in Figure 1.

In conjunction with the over-all goals of energy conservation at Inco Metals Company, a program of improvement in compressed air utilization was established. Air flows were monitored and compared to calculated requirements to establish efficiency by area. With the cooperation of area management, measures were implemented to reduce nonproductive usage. At the operation, annual savings in power consumption alone were 80,000 dollars. The program is being extended to other mine areas within the Division.

"The design, development, and verification of the Lovat 7.6metre diameter full-face tunnel-boring machine is reviewed. Programmatic and technical challenges are outlined with a review of the specifications and the design to meet these requirements. Subsystem designs are presented for the waste material removal, ventilation, cutter head, structural support, advance technique, water removal, and interfaces with the Donkin-Morien Mine. The techniques used to verify that the design meets the requirements is by testing in the Lovat factory and in the field. Certification of the machine for use in a methane environment is discussed.IntroductionStudies have concluded that the average annual worldwide tunnel construction is 500 kilometres at an estimated average co st of $3,400 U.S . per linear metre. The total market value of the tunnelling industry is estimated as approximately $1.7 billion U.S. per annum. Of this, the current market for tunnelboring machine excavation is approximately $270 million U.S. per annum worldwide with a further potential of $250 million if more contractors are convinced that Tunnel-Boring Machines (TBM) are more suitable than conventional techniques. The worldwide civil tunnelling market has the potential to double each year in the next 5 to 15 years. Growth has been identified in the energy and mineral resources sectors of the economies of many nations and a significant volume of machine tunnelling studies and trials are presently underway for the extraction of coal, uranium , heavy oil or oil sand fuels, metallic and non-metallic industrial minerals and base metal or rare earth ores. Further tunnel projects for regional transportation, waterpower, irrigation , high density urban transportation, storm water sewers and water supply purposes are continually being implemented with new concepts like military security facilities and underground storage schemes being considered.Lo vat Tunnel Equipment of Rexdale, Ontario, the only Canadian manufacturer of TBMs was incorporated in 1973 to manufacture so ft ground tunnel-boring machines to satisfy this growing market demand. Lovat has produced an average of 5 machines per annum during the period 1972 - 1982 and has established an international reputation for competitive costs, quality of construction, after-sales service, and reliability. As of June 1982 Lovat TBM's have been used to tunnel over 240 km in projects throughout the world."

"This paper presents the results of a detailed feasibility study carried out to investigate whether a low-grade deep underground mine of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd., closed since 1975, could be made more productive and profitable by the introduction of new mining technology. For this purpose, recent advances in mine design and development concepts, larger and better designed machines, such as hydraulic drills, high-pressure down-the-hole machines, LHDs, new blasting concepts, more efficient and improved stoping methods, and ground control technology were considered. Technical and economic analyses incorporated the latest computer-based techniques. The mine was reopened in 1979 and the paper concludes with an assessment of actual progress and performance compared with that planned and forecast.IntroductionThe East Mine orebody, located between the Falconbridge Mine and Inco's Cryderman Mine in the Sudbury District of Ontario, has been in production since 1956. From 1956 to 1978, about 5.6 million tons of ore had been mined from this ore zone. The ore body is low grade and was developed as a cut-and-fill operation. Due to high operating costs, the mine has been shut down several times during economic downturns. The latest closure was in 1975 due to a lower demand for metal.In 1978, investigations were initiated to assess the economic and technical feasibility of mining this ore using new developments in mining technology. In this study, consideration was given to the application of bulk mining methods with a potential for higher productivity, trackless development utilizing efficient LHD machines and hydraulic drills, new blasting and fragmentation concepts, and new ground control technology. Advanced computer techniques, such as finite element, for mine design and rate of return with discounted cash flow analyses for the economic comparison- of various mining options were utilized for a rapid and comprehensive assessment during the feasibility stage."

The nickel laterite industry is divided into two camps when it comes to the grade of the ferronickels produced. One group, led by Falcondo and Cerro Matoso, markets high-grade ferronickels in the range of 35 to 40% nickel, while another group, led by SLN and the Japanese smelters, favour lower grades in the range of 20 to 25%. Because the ores processed by these smelters vary widely in terms of nickel content and iron to nickel ratios, it is probably more accurate to classify these smelters in terms of their iron recovery: Falcondo and Cerro Matoso smelt at lower reduction potentials and thus recover only 15 to 30% of the iron in their ores, while SLN and the Japanese smelters are very reducing and recover 45 to 65% of their iron. Low reductions generally imply higher slag losses and lower nickel recoveries, but also lower power and reductant requirements; higher reductions, the reverse. The question is, therefore, whether an economically optimum ferronickel grade exists for processing any given ore. This paper proposes a methodology for determining this optimum grade and concludes that nickel laterite smelters should favour low reductions and production of high-grade ferronickels.

"Place Dome Canada's Detour Lake Mine is a low-grade gold producer located in northeastern Ontario. Production is targeted for 2850 tonnes of ore per day. As reserves and mining areas continued to be found below and far to the west of the shaft (Fig. 1), it became necessary to review and upgrade the materials handling facilities. This paper deals with the selection, design and construction of an underground crusher and conveyor system capable of handling up to 450 tonnes per hour from the lowest existing level in the mine.BackgroundThe Detour Lake mine site is accessed via secondary Highway 652 which runs northeast out of Cochrane, Ontario. The road consists of 200 Ian of hard top followed by 100 Ian of well maintained gravel to the mine site. A 1500 m airstrip is maintained at the mine site for emergency use. Prior to 1991, the workforce was flown to and from the mine site. Crews were now bused to the site from Timmins. Remnants of a winter road exist to the southeast which at one time ended in La Sarre, Quebec. This was the route used to haul bulk items during the construction period and early production years.A town site has not been established at the site for the current operations. Instead, a rotational scheme is being utilized whereby most personnel will work seven days on site followed by seven days off site. For some employees, however, the work week is termed as a four/three schedule where they work 42 hours between Monday at 10:00 a.m. and Thursday at 4:00 p.m. with the following three days off. All surface employees and maintenance employees underground work 12-hour shifts. All underground employees work a lOV2-hour shift. Supervisors work a similar schedule as their crews, however, other staff may overlap their rotation during the week.A five-compartment shaft was sunk in 1984 from surface to the 610 m elevation. Shaft stations were established at the 120 m, 260 m, 360 m, 460 m, and 560 m levels. The cage compartment consists of a single deck, 4O-man cage in balance with a counterweight. The cage hoist is an Ingersoll-Rand 10H and is regulated to travel at 4.1 m/s. Two 9 t skips operate in balance at a travel speed of 7.1 mls. The skip hoist is a 3.05 m drum Nordberg. Both hoists are automated to function without a hoistman during normal skipping and cage service runs."
