The general characteristics of bauxite deposits in Temporary Reserves held by Bauxite Exploration Pty. Ltd., Western Australia are briefly reviewed. The deposits (slide) are 'near the eastern limit of the bauxite laterite cap which masks the basement rocks of the Darling Range.

Contractors are used extensively in the development of underground mines in Australia. Often problems arise, some originating as far back as the feasibility stage of projects, through inexperience, lack of preparation and inflexibility by both parties.Guidelines are put forward for both principals and contractors which are seen as necessary to ensure that disputation is avoided and the full benefits of the use of contractors are obtained.

The Metallurgical processes used in the gold industry in Queensland since the 1850's are reviewed. The major upswing in, gold processing this decade has brought the technology of heap leaching, carbon in pulp and carbon in leach, flotation for gold and tailings retreatment to Queensland. In many cases operators have developed or improved these processes to treat difficult ores or to cope with local climatic conditions.

The large El Cerrejon coal open pit in north east Columbia has been developed over the last decade in a remote, entirely new mining area with hitherto unskilled inhabitants. Now over 200 pieces of heavy equipment operate with high reliability and availability due to successful theoretical training and skill improvement programs tuned to the specific reliability needs of the worksite and environment. The process of continuous improvement adopted promises further competitive advantages of the project.

Stope control information at the C.S.A. mine is obtained by diamond drilling inclined holes from within the stapes. Practical mining outlines are determined from complicated ore contours by a joint mining engineering and geological study. Production holes to achieve this outline are individually marked up and checked. Stope control also extends to selective mucking of ore mixtures for metallurgical reasons and to marginal ore and waste mixtures for economic reasons.

A Conveyor Belt Fire Test Program was initiated in 1985 by the Approval and Certification Center (A&CC), Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Department of Labor. The purpose was to evaluate the effect of entry air velocities on the burning properties of mine conveyor belts and assess fire test data from large- and small-scale tests. Belts meeting the fire-resistant standards of MSHA and agencies of other countries were tested in small- and large- scale fire tests.

Heavy media separation serves to upgrade mill feed and reduce unit operating costs, allowing ores to be mined which could other wise be uneconomic. At the Aberfoyle mine at Rossarden in north-east Tasmania, a simple heavy media operation using a converted Akins screw classifier as a separating vessel, removes barren quartz from mineralised material. At the Cleveland mine at Luina on the west coast of Tasmania a more complex ore mix requires a versatile operation combining hydro-dynamic and static separation equipment to provide an efficient beneficiation circuit. The two operations are briefly described with a background of basic heavy media separ- ation practice.

The Porgera mineral deposit in Papua-New Guinea contains gold as finely divided, probably submicroscopic (1 um) particles dispersed in a pyrite sulphide matrix. Only 25-30% of the gold in pyrite can be extracted by direct cyanide leaching and fine grinding the pyrite does not increase gold extraction significantly. This work is concerned with the application of alkaline leaching at atmospheric pressure to oxidise the pyrite prior to gold recovery by cyanidation. The paper presents and discusses results of a comprehensive set of testwork using sodium carbonate, sodium hydroxide and calcium hydroxide alkaline media. Best results, at 60-70% gold extraction, were obtained with sodium hydroxide systems.

Predictive chemical models facilitate the selection, design and assessment of aqueous chemical processes. The development of expertise in aqueous themochemistry has not matched the explosion in computer technology for modelling, which has placed pressure on the need for acquisition of skills to critically assess the appropriateness of the models produced. The 'blind faith' culture which appears to be developing must be arrested by appropriate programs at the tertiary level and professional development strategies in the minerals industry.

The Plant Control and Data Logging System for the Loy Yang Open Cut (LYOC) is part of a control and communications network designed to provide a high level of surveillance of open cut plant and facilitate the efficient co- ordination of operations and plant maintenance. The computer system selected utilises a central dual mini-computer and multiple microcomputer data transmission network ,linked to the plant controllers using distributed, microcomputer based remote data collectors or outstations. Several aspects of the computer system are outlined.

Considerable confusion is to be found in the methods of estimating mineral reserves. The solution appears to be more cooperation between industry and government to agree upon a classification system with guidelines to overcome the problem of the many variable factors affecting reserves. The classification system proposed by the United States Bureau of Mines and the United States Geological Survey (USBM/USGS) together with the guidelines similar to those suggested by the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy/Australian Mining Industry Council (AusIMM/AMIC) is recommended for reporting mineral reserves to government.

The scope and complexity of the Melbourne Underground Rail Loop Project and the budget restraints on the planning, design and construction of the works necessitated sound manage- ment procedures for control and co-ordination. Project Management Procedures formulated by the Principal Consultant to the Authority, John Connell - Mott, Hay 9 Anderson, Hatch, Jacobs, ensured that the Authority retained overall control of the project at all times.

The operation of a one tonne submerged combustion pilot plant for the recovery of copper from anode furnace and converter slags is described and the effects of variables discussed. Using coal as reductant, copper levels of anode furnace slag were lowered to 1% or less, with batch times of approximately 120 minutes. Fluxing with limestone was required to produce a fluid slag at temperatures of 1200 - 1300¦C. For converter slags, reduction to 0.5% Cu or less was achieved in batch times of 35 minutes. In designing for a highly productive new mine during the present declining coal market, a very detailed ò planning is necessary. Attitudes of both management and coal operators may have to be changed, with more initial participation by the unions, governmental agencies, and the coal owners. A considerable number of Australian mines are remote from labour source and this trend is likely to increase particularly in the state of Queensland. Consequently such 'mines must be developed on the basis of the future technological and social changes in order to minimise both the capital and operating costs.

Mining, metallurgical and engineering consultants have made a considerable contribution to mining industry development in Australia. Expertise has been developed locally to a high level during the last decade which has contributed to the success of many recent mining projects. The services available'cover the whole spectrum from the evaluation of ore reserves, through feasibility study and financial evaluation to design, project management and commissioning. Using these services effectively and economically is an objective which client and consultant both must pursue but which is not always achieved. In recent years rehabilitation of mine sites has become a principal focus of mining legislation in Victoria. In previous eras, managed rehabilitation commenced, if at all, towards the end of mining operations. Planning for rehabilitation works now commences before an exploration licence is granted.The paper gives a brief overview of the requirements for rehabilitation under the Mineral Resources Development Act 1990, Extractive Industries Act 1966, and related environmental planning legislation including rehabilitation bonds and enforcement provisions.A brief review of the current taxation provisions is also included.

An algorithm is described which leads directly to a unique set of coal washing parameters which, in two or more parallel streams, will give maximum yield of product at a given ash. This occurs when all parallel streams are washed to the same incremental ash. This strategy is shown to offer a considerable increase in yield compared to the simpler strategy of washing each stream to the same sumulative ash.

During the 22 years that Isa Mine has been formally involved in accident prevention, it has succeeded in reducing its lost time injury frequency rate by 70 per cent. At present its performance compares very favourably with that of other heavy industries and in particular that of other underground metalliferous mines. When reductions such as this are recorded, people want to know how it is achieved. No doubt it is assumed that if an organisation can maintain a consistent performance in accident reduction, it must have developed a panacea for the prevention of industrial injuries. This assumption would not be in accordance with the facts in the case of Isa Mine which has achieved its record through plain hard work and plenty of it.
