The pyroclastic-filled Voorspoed kimberlite pipe has a low grade due to significant internal dilution which translates to a marginal business case. The site, with excavations, tailings dumps and buildings remnant of mining from 1906 to 1912 is to become De BeersÆ benchmark mine in South Africa. In a climate of skills shortages and lean structures, a geological service to optimise exploitation of this complex resource was established. As historical mining removed the higher-grade centre of the pipe, initial production was in the weathered upper benches along brecciated pipe margins. Trenching and blasthole logging before blasts helped to mitigate the effects of the drastic contact deviations that occur when working with an inferred geological model. However, identification of unfamiliar weathered kimberlite and delineation of unmodelled internal waste posed challenges. Efficient grade control by demarcation and allocation of individual truck loads will be vital to continue profitable mining at Voorspoed. Further challenges arose across disciplines. The first yearÆs planned production of mostly weathered kimberlite was processed through a plant designed for VoorspoedÆs unusually competent ore. The high clay content of the weathered material led to clogged chutes and overloaded fines disposal, hampering efforts to commission the plant. Resolving this problem involved mining æout of planÆ to provide a blend of fresh and weathered kimberlite. The calculation of an accurate mine call factor was hindered by a lack of haul truck monitoring, process stoppages and stockpiling in the plant during commissioning. Updating of the geological model to incorporate the contact changes observed in the pit was slowed by the need to first understand how 40 years of exploration data was integrated to create the model. A plan, involving focused mine geology practices, is in place to upgrade a portion of the resource from Inferred to Indicated level of confidence. These challenges are not limited to new mines but will be ongoing as new information is constantly gained at Voorspoed and many mining operations.

Instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas have occurred in Australia in the Sydney Coal Basin since 1895 and in the Bowen Coal Basin since 1954. The largest has been about 500 tonnes of coal and so their magnitude and character have not approached those experienced in some other countries. The occurrence of CO2 with some Australian cases provides some similarity with the worst affected areas in France and Poland.The proneness of seams depends on coal rank and seam gas composition, among other factors. The proneness of places depends on depth, structure, intrusion, tectonism and other factors affecting the geometric, physical and chemical uniformity as well as details of mining. As a phenomenon due to gas and stress, prevention can be achieved by relief of high gas and/or stress condition. Alternatively, controls can be applied to render mining safe for personnel. Unfortunately day-to-day prediction is not widely and reliably achieved to allow selective use of prevention or control. The initial rate of desorption is the most promising day-to-day indicator.Various researches include gas conditions and parameters, stress and failure conditions and parameters, coal variables and geological variables in relation to prediction, prevention and control. Some assistance in research may derive from study of analogous phenomena of instantaneous outbursts of salt and other rocks and gas. It is concluded that in the Sydney and Bowen Basins, any coals with less than 30 per cent Volatile Matter (VM) ash free dry (afd) at depths over 200 m could be prone. Proneness increases with depth, with lower volatile content, with geological disturbance including faulting, intrusion and recent tectonics, with increased CO2 in seam gas, with narrow work and with other factors. Much more research is needed.Unfortunately outbursts are needed too, to provide the research with realistic data. With the problems of mechanism and prediction still being unsolved much research remains to be done. No present aspect of research is satisfactorily resolved.

The Hamersley Basin of Western Australia, approximately 500 km long by 200 km wide, is recognised globally for its rich endowment of iron ore resources. Two types of bedded iron ore mineralisation are recognised: the Proterozoic hypogene martite-microplaty hematite ores; and the more recent Cenozoic supergene martite-goethite ores. Exploration strategies depend on the style of mineralisation being targeted; however, stratigraphy and structure are fundamental controls on both ore types. Therefore, the ability to visualise the 3D geology of the entire basin is critical for the understanding of iron ore occurrences and their relationship to ore genesis of bedded iron ore mineralisation. However, due to the large size of the basin, generating a 3D geological model of the regional stratigraphy and structure has not been possible, or prioritised, primarily due to software limitations. Recent advances in implicit automated geological modelling presents an ideal opportunity to develop a 3D model of the entire Hamersley Basin. The innovative Loop software was used to model open source geological data (ie geological mapping, outcrop orientation data, and fault data) sourced from the Geological Survey of Western Australia. In addition to generating a 3D geological model, information such as stratigraphic thickness and fault offset information was extracted using the map2loop module and demonstrated its application to exploration targeting. This study demonstrates how a basin-wide 3D geological model was used to conduct a regional structural analysis of the Hamersley Basin. The results of this study provide opportunities for other prospective regions to be rapidly modelled in order to enhance the understanding of the geology and improve exploration targeting.

Coal bursts involve the sudden, violent ejection of coal or rock into the mine workings. They are a particular hazard because they typically occur without warning. During the past two years, three US coal miners were killed in two coal bursts, following a six-year period during which there were zero burst fatalities.This paper puts the US experience in the context of worldwide research into coal bursts. It focuses on two major longwall mining coalfields that have struggled with bursts for decades. The Utah experience displays many of the ‘classic’ burst characteristics, including deep cover, strong roof and floor rock, and a direct association between bursts and mining activity. In Colorado, the longwalls of the North Fork Valley (NFV) also work at great depth, but their roof and floor strengths are moderate, and most bursts have occurred during entry development or in headgates, bleeders or other outbye locations. The NFV bursts also are more likely to be associated with geologic structures and large magnitude seismic events. The paper closes with a brief discussion of how US longwalls have managed the burst risk.CITATION:Mark, C, 2014. Brown coal in Victoria in spite of its substantial reserves is not utilized greatly because of its high moisture content(-65% w/w). Transportation and handling costs of raw brown coal, on an available energy basis are so expensive that 93% of production is burnt for electricity generation on or adjacent to the coal deposit in Victoria. With direct firing of moist brown coal in power stations, approximately 20% of the gross calorific value of the fuse is used to evaporate the water contained in the coal. This energy is lost as vapour with the flue gas which is vented to the atmosphere. Also there is a 25% increase in flue gas volume and the size and cost of most of the units through which it passes must be appropriately larger. Since there are large quantities of water present the flame temperature is significantly reduced. For zero excess air and no air pre-heating the theoretical flame temperatures are: 609'o wow moisture 1450¦C 40% ª ª ª 1790¦C ZOO ª ª ª 1990¦C As a result of this there is a reduction in radiant heat transfer leading to a requirement for a two fold increase in radiant tube area. A boiler of much greater size and cost is thus required to house the additional tubes. Figure 1 illustrates the relative sizes of a boiler fired with 60% moisture brown coal with a boiler or similar output fed with a British bituminous coal, 14% moisture.

æMine to MillÆ improvement involves optimising the chain of rock breakage processes from the in situ rock in the mine to the output of the concentrator. A growing number of paper studies and case histories from metalliferous mines (AusIMM, 1998; JKMRC, 1998; Clark and Scott, 2002) demonstrate that generating more breakage in the pit and the primary crusher can lead to benefits to milling that result in significant improvements to the economic performance of a mining project. However, unless the ævalueÆ of doing this (benefit over cost?) can be appropriately quantified, the approach cannot be effectively managed and the increases in blasting and monitoring costs cannot be justified.Mining operations have traditionally been organised into the separate departments of geology, mining and processing based on the specialist skills required and the different professional disciplines involved. Process optimisation across these boundaries has commonly been frustrated by management requirements to minimise the costs incurred by each department without adequate reference to the ævalueÆ being created. Companies have tended to discard positions that provide a technical over-view of the value chain, reducing the number of people with the opportunity to influence practices across these process boundaries.This paper discusses these issues and identifies measures required to quantify and manage the ævalueÆ provided by æMine to MillÆ improvement generated by the intense blasting of ore.

A colourimetric technique, originally developed for methyl iso butyl carbinol (MIBC) based on the Komarowsky reaction, has been extended to a wide range of common mineral flotation frothers. The procedure, which is briefly described, is shown suited to on-site determinations in a campaign at Kennecott Utah Copper Copperton Concentrator (Rio Tinto). Some observations are described, including: frother (MIBC) concentration evolution down a bank, frother distribution between pulp and froth phases, and loss of frother over time due to adsorption on certain minerals. A possible interference with a fuel oil addition was overcome. MIBC in recycle water was also measured. The ability to monitor frother easily will help interpret gas dispersion behaviour and should permit further optimisation of flotation cell hydrodynamics and chemistry. The capability to directly measure should help optimise the type, amount and location of frother addition, and to assess frother recycled with reclaim process water.

Several styles of copper (Cu) mineralisation are present at Sepon. Large tonnage, low grade skarn and carbonate replacement massive sulfide mineralisation occur within the metamorphic aureole of Permian-aged rhyodacite porphyry intrusions (RDPs). During exhumation and supergene weathering, this primary mineralisation has been upgraded to form high-grade chalcocite enriched zones up to 50 m thick, which comprises the bulk of Cu resources currently being mined at Sepon. Groundwaters remobilise Cu to form exotic accumulations of malachite that are locally hosted in irregular karsts in carbonate rocks, found up to 1000 m from source mineralisation. Khanong is the largest Cu deposit and recent discoveries have been made at Thengkham South, Thengkham North and Phabing. All deposits have formed by similar processes of mineralisation. However, all differ due to local variations in host rock lithology, structural setting, and hydrological conditions. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. In order to study conditions under which SiO(g) may be formed in a blast furnace, equilibrium phase diagrams were constructed for the combustion of high and low ash cokes with oxygen-enriched blast and oil injection under conditions of high and low raceway pressures. Free energy minimisation techniques were used to calculate the composition of gaseous and condensed phases. Where coke ash is assumed, for simplicity, to comprise Si02 only, the coke can be comple- tely gasified, mainly to SiO and CO, under restricted conditions of coke to blast ratio and at temperatures greater than 1600 - 1650¦C, depending on system pressure. The formation of SiO(g) is partially suppressed by the introduction of alumina into the ash, because of the formation of solid and liquid alumino- silicate compounds. The minimum temperature for complete silicon gasification is raised to about 1700¦C. The results of the equilibrium calcula- tions are related-to actual raceway conditions. It is proposed that virtually all silicon in the coke ash is gasified such that, on condensation, it affects hot metal chemistry and slag properties and secondly, that the effects will be greater with higher ash cokes.

A substantial cost is invested into the data collection phase of any exploration or development program; notwithstanding, it is impractical to expect a database of information can be collated to ensure a perfect geological interpretation. The question then becomes, is there a possible alternative interpretation and what is the likely impact of the variations? Modelling in 2005, of the Cosmo lode at Sunrise Dam Gold Mine, Western Australia led to consideration of the philosophical implications associated with resource management. It was concluded that several plausible geological models could be constructed from the known geological database. To varying degrees, this predicament is common to all geological reconstructions, as several alternative geological models can be generated at almost any stage that will impact on the resultant resource estimation and mine plan. The significance of that variation and the associated risk of multiple geological models (MGMs) requires due consideration. What is being suggested is that using plausible multiple geological models advances the holistic understanding of a mineral deposit within the bounds of the data collected, providing fluidity for updating geological knowledge and building inherent variability into the design and planning departments where variations of the geological models may materially impact on the resource performance.

Continued extraction of the No. 3 Seam at Elouera Colliery required the driveage of a sequence of roadways within an area of significantly elevated horizontal stress. Initial roof conditions varied from excellent to very severe as the panel entered the high stress area. The variation was attributed to the extraction sequence, with different roadways "leading" the panel into the high horizontal stressfield.This paper summarises field and analytical work designed to evaluate the use of stress control methods as an effective planning tool. The "leading" roadway of the panel would be required to remain stable whilst experiencing moderate to severe deformation whilst the neighbouring roadways (stress relieved) could be driven at more acceptable advance rates using less reinforcement.The planning implications of developing the panel with stress control methods are discussed.

Geophysical borehole logging, which measures various in situ petrophysical parameters, can be used not only for qualitative interpretation such as strata correlation, but also for geotechnical assessment through quantitative data analysis. It can play an important role for safe and productive mining operations. Here we provide various applications of geophysical logs such as the estimation of the strength of intact rock or unconfined (or uniaxial) compressive strength (UCS), automated lithological/geotechnical interpretation, geophysical strata rating and orebody delineation and grade estimation. These derived parameters could provide input to control of geological and geotechnical models. This could assist site geologists and planning and production geotechnical engineers to predict and manage mining conditions on an ongoing basis. Both conventional logs such as density, natural gamma and sonic, and less common logging data such as full waveform sonic and televiewer data are examined for different applications. Although the examples used here are mainly for coal mining applications, but they can be equally applied to hard rock metalliferous mining such as iron ore mining.

During 1991 - 1993 the author interviewed approximately thirty senior managers of varying responsibilities in either the engineering, construction or operation of a heavy industrial facility. The purpose of the exercise was to determine the factors driving a deterioration of the working relationship between the engineering and the operating company following practical completion of a major project. From the research a number of conclusions have been drawn as to the root cause of the deteriorating relationship. For this paper we are drawing on this initial research and our ongoing experience of solving problems of this nature to present some fundamentals that can be used to break the breakdown maintenance cycle.

Dominion Mining Ltd. and the JKMRC have conducted a detailed investigation of the performance of two of Dominion Mining's gold treatment plants (Haveluck and Paddy's Flat). In terms of design each plant is considerably different. The Paddy's Flat plant uses a single stage SAG mill with recycle crusher, followed by single stage ball milling. The Haveluck plant uses the more traditional approach of multi-stage crushing and ball milling. The performance of these two plant designs in terms of energy efficiency and cost of comminution equipment, developed at the JKMRC, to accurately predict both power draw and size reduction characteristics at these plants is evaluated.

The Olympic Dam mineral discovery by Western Mining Corporation (WMC) in South Australia has been shown to contain one of the world's largest known deposits of copper and uranium; gold and silver are also present. Development of the deposit jointly by WMC and the BP Group is awaiting commitment, with planning based on initial production of gold in 1987 and copper and uranium in 1988.

It is a well known fact that the best method of rock reinforcement is to avoid physical ground support. This goal can be achieved by means of: - Increasing the rock structural strength - Geological definition and forecasting. - Sequencing the excavation - Smooth blasting In many cases however, extra ground support is needed in order to maintain safe working conditions. In an open pit, the structural strength of rock cannot be increased by lowering the pit walls due to economical reasons. Economy demands steeper walls and less waste to be hauled to the dump. The geological conditions can also often be extremely poor and unpredictable. For excavation sequencing and smooth blasting there are good possi- bilities, such as cleaning of the pit walls after the main excavation, arul- ing of long small diameter straight inclined holes, use of smooth blasting techniques and lightened explosives.
