"Check sampling programs were undertaken at Barrick Australia Pacific LimitedÆs Lawlers and Plutonic mine sites in Western Australia. The programs identified that the sampling, sample preparation and assaying protocols required modification to ensure acceptable precision (reproducibility) for each gold mineralisation type. These case studies describe the processes used to identify the: inconsistent precision different types of test work programs that were conducted to quantify the appropriateness for each mineralisation type steps used to modify the protocols.The type of test work conducted included: a duplicate series heterogeneity test for particulate gold mineralisation in the Lawlers gold deposit screen fire assay test work on duplicate subsamples for arsenopyrite associated mineralisation at the Plutonic gold deposit.Each test work program required a detailed scope specifying the sample selection criteria, sample preparation and assaying steps. The aim of the test work flow chart design was to ensure the assay precision between the different particle sizes or duplicate sample pairs could be measured and calculated. In the screen fire test work the true grade of the primary sample was calculated and compared against each subsample.A high quality assay laboratory was utilised for the test work. All samples were fire assayed and the gold grade determined using a gravimetric finish. The assay results were validated and the data was analysed using tables and graphs in spreadsheets. Following data analysis a modified sample preparation and assaying protocol for each mineralisation type was designed for use by the principal assay laboratories. Hydrogen-direct-reduction of iron ore in a vertical shaft furnace is a potential process that could significantly reduce CO2 emissions from the steel industry. This approach requires the pelletisation of iron ore fines, which then undergo high temperature induration to strengthen the pellets before they can be fed into the shaft furnace. Here we report on investigations into the disc-pelletisation behaviour of New Zealand titanomagnetite ironsand, and its subsequent induration and hydrogenreduction behaviour. Initial studies focused on the effect on pellet strength of varying ironsand particle size and induration conditions using bentonite and a commercially sourced carboxymethylcellulose binder. Green pellets formed with ironsand of average particle size of 65 μm exhibited optimal strength. The compressive strength of these pellets after induration at 1200°C for 2 hrs in air was measured to be 976 N. Interparticle bonding within the indurated pellets occurs due to a combination of titanohematite recrystallisation (from oxidation of titanomagnetite), and the formation of a liquid bonding phase due to interdiffusion with the bentonite and subsequent melting. Further investigation with various binders showed that a combination of both organic and inorganic binders was essential to achieve optimal pellet strength. Carboxymethyl-cellulose binders provides green strength, whilst inorganic binders such as bentonite promoted high indurated pellet strength. Hydrogen reduction tests in a thermogravimetric furnace showed that all the pellets could achieve a maximum reduction degree of 97 per cent at 1100°C, indicating that the different pellet preparation procedures had no significant effect on reducibility. Pellet recipes developed in this work are now being used to investigate vertical shaft hydrogen-DRI processing of NZ ironsand in a kg-scale laboratory reactor.

Many of the stacking and reclaiming machines employed in the mining industry today are operating in ways that were never envisaged in the days before they were commissioned, with greater throughput, increased annualised operating hours and load cycles well in excess of their original specification requirements being the norm. In many cases these machines were supplied prior to the widespread use of finite element modelling or, in the era when such software became commercially available, those supplied designed using simplified and/or coarser meshes than would be employed today. With many of these machines being expected to operate for many years to come, it is important that their ongoing reliability be maintained and their operational limits understood. In this paper, a case study is used to outline the method required for estimating the fatigue life already consumed and the likely real life left in a machine. By reference to the machineÆs prior operating history, the use of strain gauges in the field and the development of finely meshed finite element analysis (FEA), a coherent picture of the machineÆs operational state can be generated and then investment/maintenance decisions made to ensure continuity of machine operation.

Lead concentrate from the Isa and Hilton lead-zinc concentrators of Mount lsa Mines Limited is smelted at Mount Isa to produce a lead-silver bullion. This bullion is cast into four tonne blocks and shipped to Britannia Refined Metals Co Ltd, NorthDeet, England and to plants in Asia for refining and marketing. The traditional treatment stages at Mount lsa are sintering, smelting, and drossing and casting, with some of the sinter plant feed being pre-treated through an Isasmelt plant.A commercial scale lsasmelt based lead smelter was commissioned in early 1991.

NASA’s Artemis III mission is expected to return astronauts to the surface to explore and sample the lunar volatiles by 2026. These volatiles are anticipated to provide scientific insights as to how the Moon was created and economic value to off-Earth operations. These same volatiles can pose health implications to astronauts and Earth based personnel handling lunar regolith samples. Using Australian, USA and NASA airborne contaminant exposure limits and the Lunar CRater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) measurements of lunar volatiles in the Cabeus crater ejecta, the minimum mass of lunar regolith that can be safely handled by humans on Earth and in spacecraft can be calculated. This analysis determined a 0.15 grams pure sample of Cabeus crater regolith within a cubic metre of air has enough volatiles to exceed safe working conditions, and 14.9 grams of pure Cabeus crater regolith per cubic metre of air can impact human life. The intent of this analysis is to assist safe handling and exposure calculations for the safe handling procedures of lunar regolith containing volatiles.

The ore body at Elura contains fine grained galena and sphalerite in a matrix which is mostly pyrite. A differential flotation circuit concentrates lead and silver in the first section and zinc in the second. The lead section, shown in figure 1, was sampled in detail previously and the metallurgical performance assessed on a size by size basis. That assessment took no account of liberation and given the fine grained nature of the ore body, this could lead to an incomplete picture of the flotation performance. Liberation measurements were made using the QEM*SEM system on four size fractions of samples taken from seven different streams in the lead section. Using the mineral flows obtained from the mass balance around the lead section an excellent liberation balance was obtained which enabled the effect of liberation on the flotation performance to be assessed. The measurements indicated that only 17 per cent of the galena and 28 per cent of the sphalerite in the flotation feed was liberated. On the other hand 31 per cent of the gangue iron sulphides were liberated. The final concentrate was largely composed of locked galena and locked iron sulphides with 85 per cent of the product being locked. There was a small but significant fraction of liberated pyrite.

Three key areas of C.I.P. plant design, viz. leach- ing time, adsorption and the gold loading on the carbon, are discussed and illustrated with examples. The need for accurate pilot plant data for use in assessing and optimising design is emphasized. This approach should minimize capital and maximise return on capital. It is demonstrated that, as regards adsorption, economics favours short retention time, high gold loadings and mechanically agitated, draft tube reactors. INTRODUCTION Little attempt appears to have been made in Australia to design the present generation of C.I.P. plants to achieve an economic optimum. Most would, seem to have been based on pre- liminary leaching data, gold extraction and value and rule of thumb which, in general, has led to over design and over capitalisation. An essential step to effective economic design is a comprehensive pilot plant study to establish definitive operating parameters, yields and reagent costs. CONCEPTS AND REGIONAL GEOLOGY The Charters Towers region holds many keys to the metallogeny associated with the complex geological development of eastern Australia during the Palaeozoic. Tectonic, magmatic and volcano-sedimentary depositional episodes can be identified and related to the chronological development of batholithic host rocks (Clarke & Paine, 1970; Henderson, 1986; Murray, 1986). Pre-batholithic basement rocks in the north (Charters Towers Metamorphics) consist of a package of amphibolite grade schists interlayered with and intruded by gabbros and diorites (Peters, 1987). To the south (Seventy Mile Range Group) greenschist facies Cambro-Ordovician rocks overly some of the basement. The lower age of this basement is not constrained, parts of it could be as old as Pre-Cambrian. Mid-Ordovician (approx. 470 my) to Lower Devonian (approx. 400 my) age I-Type granitoid plutons of the composite Ravenswood batholith intrude the pre-batholith basement and the Seventy Mile Range Group. Igneous activity was initiated again in the Carboniferous with the extrusion of rhyolitic lavas and pyroclastics associated with porphyry and high-level intrusive complexes (Wyatt et al., 1971). The Ravenswood block is bounded by Devonian and Tertiary sedimentary sequences of mainly continental provenence.

Recovery of metallic values from lean-grade raw materials as well as from secondary/intermediate industrial products is of immense importance to a country like India which is not endowed with extensive sources of copper and nickel. The results of a few studies carried out in this area are described in Part-I and Part-II in this article. The presence of impurities which are electropositive to zinc in acid zinc electro- lyte causes changes to deposit morphology and reduced current efficiency. Glue may be added to control some impurity effects, but assaying for animal glue concentration is difficult and seldom done. Measurement of the activation overpotential for zinc deposition by cyclic voltammetry is used in some plants to monitor electrolyte quality and control glue additions. The deposit morphology and current efficiency of zinc deposition from commercial electrolyte were investigated for various glue additions in the presence of increased levels of antimony. Cyclic voltammetry was invest- i,ated as a method of optimizing glue additions in the presence of antimony. Scanning electron microscopy showed deposits characteristic of the impurity element present and the glue addition rate. Cyclic voltammetry measurements showed some correlation between current efficiency and activation polarization potential. The importance of using tankhouse electrolytes where results are to be related to tankhouse operation was noted.

Pitch-steering models have been developed for discretely advanced mining machines (such as heading machines and coal shearers) using small-angle geometry and there are illustrative examples of simulator predicted performance. Although simple linear models result from the analysis of open-based machines, sledge mounted machines require execution of a Linear Programming energy minimisation to determine the attitude of the machine base at each advance over the previously cut floor steps. An analytical approach is based on elastic beam concepts developed for such applications as longwall face conveyors, caterpillar tracked machines such as continuous miners and longhole drills. Simulation results for longhole drills show the expected performance of an automatic guidance system and the destabilizing effects of sensing deviation too far behind the drill bit. Certain drill bit boundary conditions are expected to assist TBM. steering studies in three dimensions.There is a real role in mining machine steering for the mathematical models used in flight simulators.

Large Off Highway Trucks operated in this country are generally of Diesel Electric Drive, this system tends to employ the familiar Electric Wheel. A number of fleets now employ the Traction Motor System as an alternative. An investigation is made of the operation of two such fleets. A brief description is given defining the components and their basic functions in each system. Available life history is presented and system reliability, maintainability and operator reaction is examined. Since commencing operations in the mid 1960 period Hamersley Iron has made use of the diesel electric drive system using the familiar Electric Wheel. To learn more about the fundamental roof behaviour in South African coal mines, accurate underground measurements of roof deflection were conducted in bord and pillar panels during development and pillar extraction. To conduct these measurements a survey levelling technique was adapted. The overall system reading accuracy was established as being within 0,4 mm on a 15 m sighting distance. The underground sites were modelled and, for a roadway development, similar symmetrical curvatures were calculated by a linear elastic model, as were measured underground. In a pillar extraction panel, a significant amount of bed separation was measured and the roof underwent an a-symmetric movement due to the close presence of the mined out area at one side of the roadway.

A brief descri;tioki is given of nuclear power reactors and their fuels. These fuels are made from a variety of uranium compounds such as uranium dioxide, and uranium carbide as well as uranium metal and its alloys. The various processes used to produce some of these compounds from yellow cake are outlined. Using the natural uranium, heavy water reactor by way of illustration, fabrication of fuel elements is dis- cussed and the characteristics of U02 powder required for this partic- ular fabrication are indicated. The flowsheets and equipment presently in use overseas for production of this type of U02 powder are described. Possible areas where improvements might be made to this conventional process are enumerated and some details are then given of the programme of work which has commenced at the A.A.E.C. Benchmarks of mine equipment involved in the excavation process of coal mines would suggest that such equipment is not always operating at an optimum level. Dragline operations and truck/shovel operations rely on efficient use of their plant in order to maintain high mine throughput. The first process which affects the material to be excavated is the drilling and blasting process. Drilling and blasting delivers a fragmented material with a given disposition ready for excavation by mine equipment. As mine operators demand more productivity from their major excavating equipment, many sites are considering the use of productivity monitors to measure their outputs. Some of these productivity improvements will be directly related to the drilling and blasting process, so that as the monitoring systems improve, the opportunities to evaluate all drilling and blasting variables will also improve. This paper reviews current and newer methods for monitoring equipment productivity in mines. These include simple time and motion studies obtained by either manual timing of processes or by automated data collection equipment being adopted by the industry. Case studies for truck/shovel operations are discussed and the productivity improvements are compared with typical industry standards. These improvements relate specifically to parts of the load, haul and dump cycle and the potential for significant improvements are identified. Particular opportunities for drilling and blasting improvements are also presented.

The Wisemans Creek derelict mine site is located in native forest approximately 150 km west of Sydney. Mean annual rainfall at Bathurst, 20 km to the north, is 634 mm and reasonably distributed throughout the year, with slightly more rain falling in the summer months. Evaporation is 1350 mm per annum and considerably exceeds rainfall in all but the winter months (May to August). This results in a water deficit for much of the year. Groundwater is relatively deep, as it has not been intercepted in the shallow open cut workings. Investigation of the groundwater regime was beyond the scope of the current study. Mining has taken place on the site for almost 100 years, during which copper, talc and gold have been sequentially extracted from surface and shallow underground workings. The site is now characterised by the presence of small open pits, unprotected shafts and adits, mullock heaps and an unconfined tailing deposit from a small cyanidation plant. From a distance, the mine area is visible because of two distinct steep bare slopes below the relatively small mine workings and mullock heaps. The mining area was characterised in terms of its environmental, safety and heritage issues. Mullock from the early copper mining was found to be acid forming and leachate from this, combined with clearing of timber, has most likely resulted in death of vegetation below the heaps. The mullock also contains elevated concentrations of heavy metals. The gold tailing is apparently benign and not acid forming, although there are indications of oxidation and acid formation in the derelict gold open cut. Oxidation of the acid forming mullock still appears to be taking place even after being exposed to the atmosphere for at least 50 years, resulting in continued contamination of the slopes below the heaps with heavy metals. The concentrations of metals decreases with distance below the mullock heaps and also is confined to the ground surface the further away from the mullock, providing further evidence to support the theory that the mullock is the source of contamination. Despite this continuing contamination, its spread beyond the immediate mining area appears to have been limited because of the relatively dry climate, with only intermittent rainfall and stream flows. Irregular storm flows in the nearby creek could also have washed any contaminated soil some distance from the site and beyond the area investigated in this study. Remediation of the site and restoration of vegetation on the bare slopes will therefore depend on elimination of the source of acid and metals. Options for remediation, focussing on minimising cost by retaining the materials on or close to the site, are identified. The volume of the open cuts would appear to be close to that required for burial of the acid-forming mullock, thereby removing the source of surface contamination while keeping it above the groundwater table. However, implementation of this remediation plan will depend on the availability of funds to undertake the work through the New South Wales GovernmentÆs Derelict Mines Program.

There are many established methods of excellence: benchmarking, target setting, supply chain and market analysis, employee suggestions and knowledge sharing forums. Practices Benchmarking involves organisational and technical questions that allow the site to self-assess their maturity and generate a prioritised improvement path. Not only does it benchmark and identify gaps, but the approach also facilitates networking, education and team building. For new leaders it is important to remember that you are not alone. Chances are your problem has been solved before. Networks û internal, external, formal and informal can get you started and often save you time and effort. Any leader can achieve success in excellence through a proper process of problem formulation, data and analysis. Again, using key players can make the process more effective. It is important to remember that the people side of the solution is the key to success and that monitoring will ensure the solution will work. In the words of BHP BillitionÆs CEO, Chip Goodyear: Excellence is a mind set. ItÆs something that comes when people get rewarded forthinking outside the box and applying their skill and knowledge. It happens, not in$50 million chunks, but in hundred thousand and million and $2 million chunks.When you get 35 000 people thinking that way, then youÆve really got somethinggoing.

The Red Dome Gold/Copper Mine is located approximately 15 km west of the township of Chillagoe which itself is approximately 220 km by road west of Cairns, Far North Queensland. The deposit, with other mines in the Mungana region, was worked from about 1901 to 1927. Exploration by Amoco Minerals Australia in the 1970s and early 1980s outlined a geological resource of 15 million tonnes. A mining reserve of 9.3 million tonnes was identified and originally developed by Elders Resources Limited. The mine commenced operations in March 1986 and was the first large-scale gold project in Australia to be developed solely on the heap leach process. The mine operated successfully as a gold heap leach operation until 1989 when new grinding, flotation and carbon-in-leach plant facilities were installed to process the non heap-leachable component of the orebody including the copper rich -ore. In March 1991, Red Dome Pty Ltd became a wholly owned subsidiary of Niugini Mining Limited. After six years of successful operation and having excavated a 200 in deep pit, it became evident in 1992 that unless more open cut reserves could be identified the operation was limited to six to nine months of high grade ore and a further 15 months of low grade stockpile material. A preliminary feasibility study was carried out to assess the viability of deepening the open cut. This indicated that from a technical and financial point of view it was possible to expand and deepen the open cut. This presented the daunting challenge of developing a 300 in deep, single access, open cut between a high chert ridge, a government railway line and a National Park. The meeting of this challenge is the subject of this paper.
