Whilst decisions to commit projects have traditionally been heavily influenced by hurdle rates for d.c.f. analysis, it is suggested that evaluation of competitors' costs may be a desirable additional tool.The MICAS system developed over the past four years is described. This computer system uses standard costs modified by District and Mine factors to allow estimation of individual mine costs. The data base contains more than 15,000 items of data and more than 6000 costs are calculated.Recent applications include use for competitive analysis, predictive analysis, statistical analysis, and comparative assessments with scopes ranging from a few mines to the whole Australian export industry. Some areas where care is necessary are outlined and potential further uses are discussed.

"An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. The Ertsberg mining district is a 100 km2 area in the highlands of Papua, Indonesia. The district hosts mineralised and barren, outcropping and hidden porphyry and equigranular intrusions. There are at least six major (100+ m wide) porphyry intrusions identified from surface and underground mapping and drill cores. These are the Grasberg Igneous Complex (GIC), Karume porphyry, Lembah Tembaga porphyry, Ertsberg Stockwork Zone porphyry, Kay intrusion and the Wanagon intrusion. Recent deep drilling adjacent to the GIC identified a new hidden porphyry at depth, the Gajah Tidur (Sleeping Elephant), which extends south-west beneath the Kucing Liar skarn. Other named small porphyry dykes and plugs in the district include the West Grasberg, North Grasberg, Idenberg, South East and Zaagkam intrusions. The largest equigranular intrusion is the multiphase Ertsberg diorite.Igneous activities occurred in a relatively short span (<1 million years) from about 3.4 Ma to 2.7 Ma ago, based on U-Pb zircon dating. The various intrusions in the district related to ore mineralisation are high K and appear to have been derived from the same parental chamber, based on similar whole rock rare earth element patterns. Radiogenic Nd- and Sr-isotopic variations indicate that there were multiple recharge events into the parental chamber.The larger intrusions and all economic mineralisation occur in a 4 km wide zone that parallels the N60W-trending axis of the Yellow Valley Syncline (YVS), one of the large folds generated during collisional tectonism. Intrusion pathways at ~3 Ma were localised into dilatational areas in a late and/or post-collisional NW-trending, left-lateral strike-slip zone with Riedel shear offsets between the major fault zones. The key concepts relating to the calculation of recoverable reserves for selective mining in open pit gold operations are discussed. While the general concepts are relevant to a wide range of gold ore bodies, their application is specific to particular ore bodies.The important factors contributing to the recoverable reserves aregeology, mining method, dilution, ore loss, sampling methods and theultimate bench height used in production.The implications of current methods of computing recoverable reservesare reviewed and some alternative approaches to recoverable reservecomputation based on production experience are presented.

The Sherritt Zinc Pressure Leaching Process is based upon the direct pressure leaching of zinc sulphide or lead-zinc bulk sulphide concentrates to produce zinc sulphate in solution and elemental sulphur in the leach residues. The zinc sulphate solution is compatible with conventional purification and electrowinning technology. The pressure leach residues can be treated for the recovery of elemental sulphur, lead and silver. With the conversion of sulphur to the elemental form, zinc pressure leaching allows zinc winning to be independent of sulphuric acid production. Direct pressure leaching of zinc sulphide concentrates was started commercially in October 1980. Continuing research and development studies have defined various pressure leaching configurations for integration with existing roast-leach operations, for grass roots plants, or for plants which are to have the roast-leach section completely replaced. These studies have included the treatment of zinc concentrates from various Australian producers and the development of process flowsheets for potential applications in Australia.

Magmatism is of first order significance in the extension process. Continental extension is terminated when sea-floor spreading commences, but sea-floor spreading will not commence if magmas do not begin to arrive in sufficient volumes. In the oceanic lithosphere, the rate of magma supply may determine whether sea-floor spreading takes place, or lithospheric extension as the result of normal fault arrays. In continental crust thickened as the result of previous compressional orogeny, the availability of magma may determine a completely different process. The author has examined metamorphic core complexes in a number of tectonic environments, in the North American Cordillera, in the Aegean Sea, Greece, and in the Solomon Sea, Papua and New Guinea. What these terrains have in common is a major collisional orogeny predating a major extensional event. The "roll back" of the lithospheric flexure associated with subduction can be seen as the "driving force" for extension in two of these cases. Metamorphic core complexes in these environments are characterized by domal exposures of crustal scale ductile shear zones, underneath which massive plutonic complexes have been formed. Emplacement of these plutons is associated with anatexis of the surrounding rocks. Migmatite complexes are well developed in the Aegean and Solomon Sea core complexes, and in some core complexes in the Basin and Range. Chains of core complexes can be explained as the result of basaltic and andesitic magmas derived from a linear belt of relatively hot rising asthenosphere, in a zone of attempted continental "break up". It is argued that core complexes are the results of magmas derived from relatively short lived mantle "hot spots" impingeing on extending continental crust which has been overthickened during previous compressional orogeny.

The Mount Gordon operation, consisting of the Esperanza open cut mine and the unique Mount Gordon Ferric Leach processing plant, is operated by Western Metals Copper Ltd at Mount Gordon, 125 km north east of Mt Isa. The processing plant treats predominantly the secondary copper sulphide minerals, chalcocite and covellite. The gangue consists of massive pyrite and a range of silicified siltstones. The processing plant utilises a conventional single stage SAG/cyclone milling circuit, followed by low-temperature/low-pressure autoclave oxidation to produce copper in solution. The pregnant leach solution is treated via conventional SX/EW technology to produce copper cathode. Currently the plant is operating at a nominal production rate of 48 500 tpa copper. The Mount Gordon Ferric Leach technology is the worlds first integrated pressure leach/SX/EW process to be used to treat copper sulphides on a full plant scale. In the last six months, July to December 2001, the plant has emerged from a two-year postcommissioning phase to achieve steady state operation. This has been characterised by high plant availability and consistent production performance in excess of the name plate capacity of 45 000 tonnes. Production rates will continue to increase over the next 12 months to over 50 000 tpa via a planned process of incremental improvements. The pressure leach circuit has consistently achieved availabilities exceeding 95 per cent over the past 18 months. Notwithstanding this, the leach circuit still has a much greater requirement for planned maintenance than SX/EW. For much of the Mount Gordon processing plantÆs operating life, the leaching process has constrained production. Recent developments arising from detailed mass and energy balance modelling have now significantly improved leach capability, resulting in the plant bottleneck being shifted to electrowinning. In order to balance the capabilities of the two circuits however, the surge capacity between leach and SX/EW was increased substantially. This effectively de-coupled the higher capability but lower availability leach circuit from the lower capability but higher availability SX/EW circuit. As a result, electrowinning utilisation has increased to in excess of 98 per cent, which is reflected in a higher overall plant throughput.

An advanced elasto-plastic finite element model adopting a modified Von Mises yielding criterion was used to simulate progressive failure of the rock strata surrounding a room and pillar mine structure. The model conformed to the strain-softening behaviour of rock and accounted for post-failure residual strength. The simulation was achieved in such a way that material values were updated after each FE run, according to the stress criterion until the solution reached the final equilibrium steady state of the mine structure. The suggested structural stability analysis approach accounted for the main features of the structure degradations produced during loading through changes in rock material stiffness and subsequent evolution of stresses. Comprehensive parametric analysis was performed and the inevitable effect of interaction of the roof, pillar and floor on the overall mine stability limit was investigated. The numerical results clearly showed that linear models could not realistically represent the true behaviour of the mine structure. The results obtained are in good agreement with that predicted in the field.

Simulations of complex physical phenomena, such as hurricanes and fluid flow around space vehicles, can now be effectively explored using modem visualisation techniques which have been developed to examine the results of numerical modelling using supercomputers. These techniques are also being applied extensively in medical investigations, including viewing the interior of the human brain. We have now applied these same techniques to the visualisation of gold deposits.Grade control in open pit gold mining operations may involve the collection of at least half a million samples in each mine. Extensive drilling programs also accompany the early reserve evaluation stages and exploration in advance of mining. Maximum utilisation of these very large amounts of information requires an ability to integrate, examine and present large three-dimensional data sets in order to be able to derive and effectively communicate information on grade distribution and geological controls.

Introduction The mine winder is an essential element in the mining of ore in deep level mines and therefore requires a high degree of reliability to avoid interruption of production. Failure of any component on a winder may also be dangerous and expensive to repair. The larger the failure the larger the stoppage. The failure of a winder drum is the ultimate catastrophe, not only because of the cost of replacement, but also because of the lead time in procuring a new drum. Today these types of failure are not as common but many failures have occurred in the past and even today many an old winder is con- sidered for a new and often more arduous duty. As far back as the turn of the century a lot of information had been gathered to try and clear up the complexities of the multi- layering effect of coiling rope under tension onto a drum. Before comparing results obtained by various researchers the nature of the pressure distribution between rope and drum due to multi-layering will be discussed briefly.

Surface subsidence resulting from "total extraction" of coal in the Collie Basin first occured in 1987 when Western Collieries Ltd trialled the Wongawilli mining method. Because very little quantitative subsidence data existed for the weak, Permian sediments, a research program was set up prior to the extraction of the first panel. The objective of the study was to be able to predict subsidence characteristics and effects prior to mining future total extraction panels. Attempts at predicting subsidence began using existing subsidence models from other coal mining regions, however, as more site information became available, it became clear that it was necessary to develop a separate, she specific predictive model for the Collie Coal Basin. Analysis of extensive field monitoring data for both surface and subsurface subsidence has produced a series of empirical models which can predict the shape of surface subsidence troughs and corresponding tilts, and strains for rectangular panels and describe the sequences of ground movement from the mine roof through to the ground surface.

The structural pattern of Victoria shows the presence of EW, NW, NE as well as the more readily recognised NNW factors commonly associated with the goldfields. ENE and WNW trends are also present. This structural lattice affects all rocks of the State. Landsat imagery shows that the EW, NW and NE structural elements are closely related spatially to the distribution of Palaeozoic igneous intrusives, Cainozoic volcanic vents as well as all historically important gold mines. It is suggested that the EW, NW and NE structural grid visible on landsat imagery is a reflection of the structure of a mid-crustal layer situated between 3.5 and 17 kms below the surface. The points of intersection of the structural elements of the mid-crustal layer offer most favourable loci for the escape of energy in the form of heat. The correlation between the distribution of igneous plutons, volcanic vents and centres of mineralisation, all reliant on high levels of energy for their formation, indicates the stability of the structures of the mid-crustal layer since early Palaeozoic times. The deep level crustal structures are believed to be, related to the release of stresses placed on the crust since early Palaeozoic times by the rotation of the Earth. A geological model that accommodates the presence of a mid-crustal layer as well as the complexities of the recognised orogenic cycles of southeast Australia is suggested. All 1 000 kg Au reef and deep lead mines fall within 1.5 and 2.5 km respectively of strong linears associated intimately with plutons and volcanic vents. Future exploration of the State is more likely to meet with success if it too is confined to the evaluation of these and similar linears. The mode of mineralisation of any one centre will depend upon the temperature, pressure and geochemical gradients operating on the migrating mineralising fluids as well as the structures in the host rocks. These factors are likely to have varied considerably from one centre of mineralisation to the next and consistency of mineral isation form and depth should not be expected along the length of any single Linear.

The development and operation of three large open cut brown coal mines in the Latrobe Valley, Victoria, Australia, requires a wide range of drilling techniques for coal resource evaluation and stratigraphic defi- nition, material property identification, open cut dewatering, and instal- lation of groundwater monitoring bores. This paper describes in detail the range of drilling techniques, equip- ment used and associated problems with drilling, in a deep sedimentary basin containing several major brown coal seams, multiple aquifer sys- tems of varying pressures and thin layers of hard materials including pyrite, siderite and basalt. Methods of rotary drilling include wireline core drilling, conventional core drilling, conventional flush drilling, diamond core drilling, reverse circulation air lift drilling and bucket auger drilling. Cable tool drilling is also used for strata definition and aquifer sampling.

In dense medium processes for the beneficiation of minerals the consumption of medium (generally ferrosilicon) represents a major component of the operating cost. This provides a strong incentive for improvements in heavy medium recovery circuit design and operation. A major thrust in heavy medium plant design over the past decade has therefore been towards circuits which reduce medium losses. In this paper recent trends in plant design are examined in relation to the factors infl uencing circuit performance and medium losses. Operational details ' which have a significant effect on losses are discussed and illustrated by means of plant and pilot plant test data, with particular emphasis on the performance of wet drum magnetic separators. While the emphasis is on reducing the consumption of the high-cost ferrosilicon medium used in minerals beneficiation, most of the principles described in this paper are equally relevant to the design and operation of magnetite recovery circuits for coal preparation plants.

Geological maps of the Pacific Rim recently published by the Circum-Pacific Council for Energy and Mineral Resources have provided a useful perspective from which to view modern plate interaction and the evolution of modern fold belts. An important lesson from any study of modern plate interaction is that of the normality of change. The chaotic is more usual than the simple. Present day convergent margins with mixed characteristics are measures of this chaos. Indeed, the character of less than one third of the present length of the Pacific Rim can be ascribed to conventional models of plate interaction. Another lesson is that of the great mobility of oceanic crust. Enormous areas of the Pacific may not be represented in future fold belts developed at convergent boundaries unless normal consumption processes are disrupted, and even then only by linear zones a few kilometres wide. The axes of divergent boundaries creating Pacific Ocean crust have been equally mobile, with new spreading sites taking over from older sites through time. Divergent boundaries, whether active or inactive, consist of oceanic crust, and may be wholly consumed at collision sites with convergent boundaries. Their only potential contributions to fold belt evolution are transforms and magmatic activity. It is this transform component that can provide us with a mechanism to explain the apparent contradiction of both compressional and extensional features occurring together in a developing fold belt. Reconstructions for the SW Pacific are used to demonstrate that the fold belts under construction during the last 4% (Jurassic- Recent) of geologic time have involved interaction between convergent, divergent, and transform boundaries. Open pit mining began in 1978 at the Woodlawn base metals deposit. For its ten years as an open pit the mine was financially unsuccessful as a combined result of difficult metallurgy and industrial unrest. In 1985 CRA bought out two American joint venturers with a view to going underground and a prerequisite to expending capital on developing an underground operation was to improve the industrial climate, work practices and mining methods.Following feasibility work, continuous production from the underground mine began in 1986 using mechanised cut and fill methods and a workforce trained under a multiskilling program. Men with no previous underground experience were trained by supervisors with backgrounds as miners to undertake all the work that is required with increases in skill levels being rewarded with increases in pay.

One of the most praninent Bouguer anomaly features in the Broken Hill District is the long wavelength high of 10-15 ngals above background which forms a northeast trending, oval zone sane 15 km by 45 km with Broken Hill on its northern gradient. Rock density measurements and modelling indicate that this anomaly can be explained by the presence of generally relatively higher density meta- sediments extending from the surface to a depth of about 2000 m. The regional Bouguer anomaly data show that the Willyama Block and Euriowie Block are mostly overlain by a fairly smooth Bouguer anomaly high in the range 5-15 mgals, whilst the surrounding younger sediment covered areas, including the Mundi Mundi Plain, Murray Basin fringe and Bancannia Trough, are mostly overlain by lows which range to minus 30 mgals. Thus in terms of the gravity pattern the Willyama and Euriowie Blocks form a fairly continuous and haogeneous entity. However, the 5-10 mgals relative low over part of the Torrowangee Synclinorial Zone indicates that the Adelaidean System metasediments are in aggregate slightly less dense than the Willyama Supergroup metasediments. The low can be modelled to indicate a basement link between the Broken Hill and Euriowie Blocks at 1000-2000 m depth.
