The anodic treatment of aluminum presents problems of scientific as well as of commercial interest.l-3 Of particular interest is the fact that, during the anodic oxidation process, the oxide continues to form at the metal-oxide interface under any oxide previously formed. This has led to speculation as to the mechanism involved in the formation of the relatively thick oxide coatings that are used commercially for decorative or protective purposes. Furthermore, the ability of certain types of oxide coatings to adsorb dyes and other substances has stimulated research to determine the actual structure of these adsorptive coatings. It has been found that anodic oxide coatings on aluminum are composed essentially of aluminum oxide. They are formed by the action of oxygen ions penetrating to the metal surface during the electrolytic oxidation treatment. These coatings can be formed in a number of different electrolytes, as for example, those which contain sulphuric acid, chromic acid, oxalic acid, or boric acid. These are the commonest and most useful electrolytes employed commercially. Except for certain specific conditions of formation, the coatings in general have been found to be amorphous alumina, as far as can be determined by X-ray or electron-diffraction methods. Anodic oxidation processes can be arranged in three rather general classes if they are grouped in relation to the solvent action of the electrolyte on the coating.4 In the first class, the electrolyte has little or no solvent action on the coating that is formed. In general, coatings produced under such circumstances are nonporous and non-adsorptive. In the second class, the electrolyte exerts an appreciable solvent action on the coating. These coatings are porous and adsorptive. Finally, for the third class, the electrolyte tends to dissolve the coating about as rapidly as it is formed. This action produces electrolytic brightening or anodic polishing of the aluminum surface and at most leaves only a very thin film of oxide. The nonporous and nonadsorptive type of oxide film is represented by the coatings that are formed when solutions of boric acid are employed as the electrolyte. It is especially significant that these impervious films are formed in electrolytes that exert little or no solvent action on the coating. Where a boric acid electrolyte is used, the coating tends to form rapidly, with the result that the flow of current is soon reduced to substantially zero. This indicates that the growth of the coating has stopped. As a rule, the thickness of the coating is roughly proportional to the voltage employed for formation and the coatings of this type are exceedingly thin. Various grades of synthetic mullite have been developed in recent years to replace or supplement natural sources of mullite deriued from the mullite group of minerals consisting of sillimanite, kyanite, and andalusite. Raw materials and heat treating processes used in making synthetic mullite are described. Chemical and physical data are given for typical grades and crystalline structure is illustrated with micrographs. Use of synthetic mullite as a refractory material in the glass and metallurgical industries is discussed. Mullite (3A12O3.2siO2), the only stable compound formed in the alumina-silica system, is usually present to some degree in all aluminum silicate ceramic products. The formation of mullite is considered beneficial to give rigidity to the structure and is dependent upon the ratio of Al2O3 to SiO2 in the original composition, particle size, degree of mixing, firing temperature, cooling rate, and the presence of auxiliary glass-forming fluxes. Mullite may also be formed at the reaction interface of fire clay or alumina-type refractories in contact with glass or slag melts. The term synthetic mullite is commonly used today to identify a class of sintered and fused aggregates or grains in the alumina-silica system having a highly developed mullite structure but derived mainly from raw materials other than the sillimanite group of minerals. Within the past 15 years extensive research has been done to develop economical processes to form sintered synthetic mullite aggregate to replace calcined Indian kyanite in super-refractories. Severa1 brands of such mullite are now being produced in commerical quantity and finding extensive use in refractories. Based on the service results of such refractories in many applications throughout the metallurgical, ceramic, and glass industry these developments have been considered successful and suitable substitutes for Indian kyanite now appear assured. EARLY DEVELOPMENT The conversion of kyanite, sillimanite and anda-lusite minerals of the sillimanite group to mullite and their use in refractories and porcelain have been discussed quite extensively in the literature by peck,' Grieg,' Riddle and Foster,3 Bowen and Grieg,4 and others and will only be mentioned here for reference to compare properties with synthetic mullite. In 1928, curtis5 reported on the development of a high temperature gas-converter process for forming synthetic mullite. The raw materials were derived mainly from lumps of high alumina clay of the correct natural composition or blends of clays and alumina that was interground and briquetted to form a suitable charge to maintain a surface combustion firing within the converter. Curtis was, no doubt, the first to illustrate by micrographs in natural color the crystalline structure of mullite derived from kyanite and mullite derived by sintering clay and alumina mixtures at temperatures above cone 32 (3123°F) and by electric fusion. In 1937, sei16 was issued a patent covering the use of a mixture of alumina-silica minerals and alumina in the proportion to form a mullite-yielding material at temperatures in excess of 3100' F. During the period from 1930 to 1940, economic conditions were not favorable for the production of synthetic mullite mainly due to an adequate supply of good grades of Indian kyanite ore suitable for conversion to mullite. Uncertain conditions on availability of the Indian kyanite during the early stages of World War II fostered further study on the development of synthetic substitutes. In 1943, McVay and wilson7 reported on an extensive investigation of domestic substitute materials. Their work covered essentially the use of mixtures of electric furnace mullite, calcined topaz, and calcined domestic kyanite. Compositions were found that gave equivalent or better hot load strength than Indian kyanite in mullite-type brick compositions; however, the calcining of the topaz presented certain physical and chemical problems on the disposition of silicofluoride and hydrofluoric acid while the high cost of electric furnace mullite was a limiting factor. In this work it was pointed out that water-quenched fused mullite was found to be unstable on reheat and gave poor hot load strength due to excessive glass present whereas the slow cooled or annealed mullite contained large crystals of mullite and corundum with little glass and gave superior results.

The purpose of this paper is to report evidence, regarding metal structures, that is contradictory to the amorphous-metal hypothesis of Beilby, and particularly evidence that is opposed to the proposition that a vitreous amorphous layer is produced by polishing a piece of metal. According to the theory of Beilby, which has been developed by Rosenhain and others, polishing a piece of metal greatly affects the condition of the metal at or near the surface polished, making that surface entirely different in character from the metal beneath. A vitreous amorphous surface film is said to be formed. The polishing process, on the basis of Beilby's explanation, is well known and does not require discussion here, but it is advisable to seek the precise meaning of the term "amorphous." According to Beilby, "amorphous means non-crystalline in the most intimate sense of the word; the molecules arc not marshalled in crystalline order and orientation." According to Rosenhain, the amorphous condition is that assumed by a metal when the crystalline arrangement is completely broken up so that the atoms exist in a state of disorderly arrangement similar to that which exists in the liquid state. Thus, from the point of view of the phase rule, the "amorphous phase" is regarded as being identical with the liquid phase. Amorphous metal is often likened to an undercooled liquid. A crystalline substance is one in which the atoms are arranged in space according to some definite repeating geometrical pattern. The existence of amorphous metal has not been definitely proved. The evidence offered here that amorphous metal probably does not exist is of a direct nature and is afforded by x-ray diffraction effects given by a number of metals and alloys when polished, cold-worked, and annealed. Considerable of the experimental work was carried out with substantially pure aluminum and the aluminum alloy duralumin, but many of the observations made on these materials were checked by similar observations on copper, iron, tin, zinc, lead, mild steels, and

In spite of many investigations of the occlusion of hydrogen in iron, the nature of the process and the reasons for the accompanying effects upon the metal are still open questions. This is in large part due to three causes: (1) the difficulty of obtaining iron of adequate purity as starting material; (2) the occurrence of allotropic transformations, which complicate the effects; and (3) the fact that the body-centered cubic modification does not lend itself readily to crystallographic investigation. The present paper attempts a critical review and correlation of the somewhat scattered and disconnected existing observations, and an experimental determination of the extent to which the conclusions that appear to follow from these are applicable to iron of really high purity, studied under well-defined conditions. Review Although only a comparatively few investigations have so far been made on the pure system iron-hydrogen, there is a much larger volume of literature which throws some light on the problem but falls short of a place in the systematic investigations, either because no attempt was made to measure equilibrium conditions or because the metal used was not iron or the gas not pure hydrogen. Such results have been variously dismissed in the past as of no importance, or as too complicated to try to explain; or they have been explained in terms of any of a dozen or more pictures, each of which is contradicted by data from other sources. The present importance of these data thus arises from their very mass and diversity, which present a picture of occlusion as a phenomenon whose variability cannot be ignored. We have attempted to organize the literature into groups comprising similar experiments or data leading to similar conclusions, thus of necessity sacrificing accuracy of historical order. Lattice Occlusion.—Throughout this discussion, the term "lattice occlusion" will be used to denote the formation of a simple solid solution of a gas in a metal lattice, usually of interstitial distribution. The subject " Safe Timbering of Working Places in Mobile Loading" is one that requires an analytical study of the strata both above and below the coal seam as well as the characteristics of the coal seam itself. The projection or mining plan must be based on economic roof control in which the application of timber can be minimized without incurring cost increases in other phases of production. The several types of loading machines in common use today are not adaptable to the same projections or timbering systems. Consequently the type of equipment to be used must also be considered. For these reasons the writer does not believe that the problems of timbering in working places can be discussed without simultaneously considering economic production as well as the safety of men and the conservation of equipment. Prior to the introduction of loading machines as a substitute for the pick and shovel system of loading coal, the care and maintenance of the individual working places were generally the responsibility of the coal loaders who worked in them. Up to that time very few coal companies had developed and applied fixed and definite standards for timbering the working places in the mines they operated. It is common knowledge that mechanical loading of coal has had several false starts in the last twenty-five years and it is only in the last decade that it has developed to the stage at which we now find it. During this twenty-five year period the management of the more responsible companies have come to realize the tremendous importance of roof control in coal mining. From a safety viewpoint, the lack of roof control has been and still is responsible for more than a third of the industry's annual fatality experience. In recent years workmen's compensation and insurance rates have steadily increased while the profit margin has decreased almost to the point of elimination. From an economic operating viewpoint, the failure to properly control roof is quite often the most costly single phase of coal mining. Since the manufacturers of loading machine equipment have so improved their machines that normal care and maintenance can reduce to a minimum the time lost because of mechanical failure the production delays from other causes have assumed a far greater importance. Roof control in the broad sense and in the light of concentrated mining plans or projections that are adapted to mobile loading should be regarded as one of the major problems in the inseparable phases of production and safety of the workman and equipment at the working face. The subject of this paper cannot be treated properly unless what is said here is based upon the broad and fundamental problem of genera' roof control. The suc-cessful solution of a problem arising in any industry must have its origin in a complete analysis of the known facts or factors that pertain to it. The several illustrations

Creep activation energies for single aluminum crystals favorably oriented for shear by (010) [101] glide were detemined over the temperature range from 78" to 900°K. Observations of slip bands on the specimen surface were made in conjunction with the investigation. From 78" to 780°K, the activation energies obtained in this imestigation agreed closely with those previously found for creep by (111) [101] slip. Between 78" and 140°K, the activation energy was identified with the Peierls process, while between 260°and 780°K the activation energy was close to that for cross-slip. The coarse wavy slip bands nominally parallel to the (010) plane observed above 260°K were attributed to fine cross-slip. From 800" to 900°K, unusually high apparent activation energies ranging from 28,000 to 54,000 cal per mole were obtained. These apparent activation energies were attributed to re crystallization. AS illustrated in Fig. 1, a recent investigation1 has shown that creep of aluminum single crystals by the (111) [i01] mechanism is controlled by three unique processes, each of which is characterized by a single activation energy which is independent of the applied stress and the creep strain. A comparison of the observed activation energies with theoretically calculated values permits a fairly clear identification of the three operative creep processes. Below 450°K, where the activation energy for creep is 3,400 cal per mole, the deformation is controlled by the Peierls process, the activation energy for creep agreeing well with that calculated by seeger2 for the energy required to nucleate the motion of a dislocation loop against the atomic forces of the lattice. Between 590° and 750°K, the observed activation energy for creep of about 28,000 cal per mole agrees well with the energy necessary to induce cross-slip. Seeger and schoeck3 estimate that the activation energy is about 24,000 cal per mole whereas Friedel4 recently calculated this activation energy to be 28,000 cal per mole. Above 800°K the activation energy of 35,500 cal per mole that was observed for creep agrees well with that estimated for self-diffusion in aluminum.= In this range the operative rate-controlling slip process has been clearly identified as that arising from the climb of edge dislocations. The objective of this investigation is to ascertain whether a single crystal of aluminum favorably oriented for simple shear in the [loll direction on the (010) plane might exhibit uniquely different activation energies for creep from those obtained previously for (111) [101] slip. Whereas the exis- tence of such unique activation energies would constitute incontrover table evidence for new mechanisms of slip, the absence of any new activation energies might suggest that slip of aluminum is confined to the (111) [loll mechanism. Several factors prompted the selection of the (010) [101] orientation for study. First, there are more reported observations of (010) [loll slip than of any other nonoctahe-dral mechanism.8-10Secondly, Chalmers and Martius1l have concluded from considerations of the energies of dislocations that (010) slip is the second most favored mechanism in face-centered-cubic metals. Finally, favorable orientations for simple shear by the (010) [loll mechanism provide the least favored orientation for slip by the (111) [101] mechanism. EXPE-RIMENTAL PRO-CEDURE The high-purity aluminum stock, specimen preparation, shear fixture, extensometry, and experimental technique used in this investigation were the same as those previously reported.' The finished specimen had a central reduced section 0.190 in. wide and 0.590 in. in diam and 1/4-in. grip sections at both sides, 0.690 in. in diameter. The specimen was oriented in the stainless steel grips of the shear fixture with the (010) plane perpendicular to the dumbbell axis and the [loll direction parallel to the stress axis within 2 deg. Creep activation energies were calculated in the previously described manner1 from determinations of the instantaneous change in shear strain rate produced by an abrupt 15 to 20 deg increase or decrease in test temperature. Any city dweller who has walked alone along a remote mine passageway has to be impressed by the eerie silence-the total absence of noise except for one's own breathing and scuffing of boots on the bottom. An underpound mine can have tremendous contrasts, from complete silence to the ear piercing clatter of percussion drills working in the mine roof. Noise in underground mining machines is both useful and detrimental. Without characteristic noises that are recognizable to miners, operators would have a more difficult job operating their machines. Noise serves as a warning of approaching machinery, and changes in noise give indication that breakdowns may occur. But excessive noise is a health hazard. In recognition of this fact, our congress included noise exposure as a part of the "Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969." As [Fig. 1] indicates, allowable noise exposure is established by specifying a time duration permitted at different noise levels. This is the well known "Walsh-Healey" criteria which govern noise exposure in many industries. In most industries noise exposure is not a constant value. Noise emitted from coal mining machinery varies widely, and therefore interpretation of compliance is not a simple matter. Time, environment, instrumentation and machine productivity, as well as the designed machine characteristics affect the results. It is the purpose of this paper to present the underground coal face machinery noise problem from a manufacturer's point of view. Manufacturers are very much aware of their responsibility to alleviate the noise problem. Not infrequently, orders are received from coal operators that a given new machine must comply with "The Coal Mine Health & Safety Act" noise regulations. Such a request is indicative of the misunderstanding which exists with machine users, while indicating their desire to comply with the law. Obviously, if all machinery could be designed and used at some arbitrary low noise level, it would be possible to simplify the regulations. However, there still remains the pervasive problem of existing machines. Extensive investigation to create practical retrofit kits for existing machines, to substantially reduce noise have been only marginally successful. Certain machine mechanisms are inherent noise makers. The only really good solution is to substitute a quieter mechanism. Such overall new designs have been undertaken, and several examples are mentioned later in this paper. Before describing machine noise problems, it is necessary to define noise values. Noise levels are measured in decibels. The designation "DBA" is decibels measured on the "A" scale, or one in which the frequency sensitivity of the instrumentation is about the same as the human ear. The numbers are often misinterpreted because it is a logarithmic, rather than an arithmetic scale. In comprehending the numbers, it should be remembered that any increase of 3 dB doubles the sound power. In practical terms this means that two noises of equal power at the same distance away increases a dB reading by three. The present status of integrated circuits utilizing. superconductive switching. elements is reviewed with special attention given to fabrication techniques, methods for interconnecting completed circuits, and refrigeration requirements. Cryoelectronics has been largely an "inte- grated-circuit" technology since its conception because the switching speed of superconductive devices is attractive only when these devices are fabricated with thin-film techniques. It is true that cryotron circuits can be constructed from wires of appropriate materials (as indeed was done by Dudley Buck 1 in his early investigations) but these circuits will switch in times characteristic of milliseconds whereas similar circuits fabricated by thin-film methods have potential switching times of nanoseconds. Furthermore, cryo-electronic devices such as the cryotron lend themselves readily to fabrication by thin-film techniques since these components may be made from polycrys-talline thin films and are relatively insensitive to the presence of impurities (as measured by semiconductor standards). Therefore, during the past decade considerable effort has been devoted to developing techniques for batch fabricating circuit arrays containing superconductive switching elements. Technology had developed to the point several years ago that fabrication of cryoelectronic arrays containing up to one hundred devices was rather straightforward. However, larger arrays containing between lo4 and 106 components which are required for commercial development of cryoelectronics still pose very severe yield problems. Thus in a sense cryoelectronics found itself in 1962 at the point semiconductor technology finds itself today; namely, individual devices and small groups of integrated devices could be fabricated with acceptable yield and the outlook for building larger integrated-circuit arrays was bright. Unfortunately, problems associated largely with yield have made fabrication of these larger arrays difficult. Unlike semiconductor technology, cryoelectronics had to solve the problems of large-scale integration before it could become economically attractive. This has proven to be a sizable burden to bear. Since several reviews exist on superconductivity,2 superconductive devices,3 and cryoelectronic technology, no attempt will be made in this paper to summarize these areas. Instead a few specific topics will be dealt with in more detail. First, a brief description is given of selected superconducting switching and storage devices with special attention to several metallurgical techniques which improve the performance of these devices. Second, techniques used to fabricate cryoelectronic devices are described with emphasis on problems affecting yield. Third, techniques for interconnecting a number of cryoelectronic planes are described. And last, refrigeration of cryoelectronic components is discussed briefly since the low operating temperature of superconductive devices is an important consideration in this technology. SUPERCONDUCTING STORAGE AND SWITCHING DEVICES The basic superconductive switching device is the thin-film cryotron. The geometry of this device is attractively simple, since it involves only the intersection of two lines that are electrically insulated from each other. The switching element (gate) and control element (control) of a crossed-film cryotron are arranged as illustrated in Fig. 1. The material for the gate is selected to permit the gate to be switched from the superconducting to the normal (resistive) state by the application of a control current. Tin, which has a critical temperature (T,) of 3.7°K, is commonly used for the gate and the cryotron is operated at a temperature just below T, (for example, 3.5°K). The control material (normally lead, with T, = 7.2°K) is chosen so that the control is never driven normal during circuit operation. To improve cryotron operation, a ground plane, also of lead, is placed under all of the circuitry to act as a diamagnetic shield and improve the current-density uniformity across the width of various thin-film elements. Normally, line widths vary from 0.005 to ^ 0.020 in. and film thicknesses from 300 to 10,000A, although new fabrication techniques make narrower lines feasible. In fabricating cryotrons it is important that the edges of the gate elements be geometrically sharp to avoid undesirable switching characteristics associated with a thinner edge region, Fig. 2. One technique which has been used extensively to form patterns consists of placing a physical mask containing the film pattern between the evaporation source and the substrate and depositing through the mask. Film strips formed in this manner possess a penumbra at the film edges due to shadowing of the evapor-ant under the mask. Stress-vuptuve data for several of- the refractory metals are frequently found to yield a linear relationship between the Larson-Miller parameter and the logarithm of the applied stress. In such cases linear stress-rupture isotherms result with slopes bearing a definite relationship to the temperature. It also follows that the stress to produce rupture in a certain period of time will be linear in temperature. Data for several refractory metals have been reviewed and excellent linearity is shown in this type of isochronal plot. In addition, the af ore - mentioned lineavity leads to a linear relation between the log of the stress to produce rupture in a certain time and the homologous temperature. This has been illustrated for the Group VI-A metals, tungsten and molybdenum. EXTENSIVE use has been made of the Larson-Miller' parameter in the interpolation and extrapolation of stress-rupture and creep data. In those cases where this particular parametric approach is applicable a convenient and fairly straightforward procedure is made available for the correlation of experimental stress-rupture data. It is quite common to employ this parameter in the form of a master rupture plot in which the parameter, T(C + log tr), is expressed as a function of log stress. In many cases this functional relationship in log stress is linear within acceptable accuracy and hence the following relation results: where P is the parameter, C is the Larson-Miller constant, T is the absolute temperature, t~ is the rupture time, a is the stress, and a and b are constants. Examples of such a relationship are contained in the work of Green, Smith, and 01son2 dealing with high-temperature rupture behavior of molybdenum and in the work of Green' dealing with the high-temperature behavior of tungsten. In addition, pugh4 has shown a similar linearity for some fairly low-temperature data for molybdenum. It can be shown that when the relationship in Eq. [I] is exhibited certain generalizations can be made concerning the form of the stress-rupture isotherms. For example, rearranging yields: For a given material (constant C) at a given temperature the first term on the right-hand side of Eq. [2] is a constant and hence this equation defines a straight line when log stress is plotted as a function of log-rupture time. This is recognized as the standard form usually employed in this type of data presentation. Such linearity then suggests the linear form of the Larson-Miller parameter. Or, in other words, the linear parametric relationship in Eq. [2] results only when the stress-rupture data are linear on a log-log plot of stress vs rupture time. Another interesting observation can be made in regard to Eq. [2]. It can be noted that the slope of the stress-rupture isotherms is given by - T/b and hence a direct calculation of the constant b is available. It also follows that since the value of b is the same for all temperatures the slopes of the various isotherms on the log-log stress-rupture plot cannot be the same. Indeed, the existence of the relationship in Eq. [2] precludes a system of parallel lines on this common stress-rupture plot. As a matter of fact it further specifies that in addition to being nonparallel the slope of these isotherms must decrease (i.e., become more negative) with increasing temperature. Such a condition is indeed found to exist in the case of the stress-rupture data reported for molybdenum.' As a corollary to the above, it may be stated that stress-rupture data which do not lead to a linear log-log stress-rupture plot or whose isotherms do not exhibit a decrease in slope as the temperature increases will not yield the linear relationship of Eq. [I]. Applying Eq. [2] to two different temperatures and solving for C yields: Eq. [3] affords a simple and rapid method for calculating the Larson-Miller constant from the log-log stress-rupture plot. The slope of a given linear isotherm is measured and the value of "b" calculated based on Eq. [2] as: slope = - -Tb Then at an abscissa value of 1.0 hr (making log tr in Eq. [3] equal to zero) read the stress corresponding to rupture for two different temperatures. HOTCHKISS, * Madison, Wis.-It was fortunate, in a way, that this subject of income taxation came up during the war when the government could appeal, on the basis of patriotism, to men of large, business experience to undertake the work of formulating this matter and practically donate their services. At any other time the government would have been unable to secure the necessary number of men of like ability. There is one thing that must not be forgotten. In all cases, except the very largest and most important, the application of this income tax law to a mine is going to be made by clerks whose salaries are fixed by a Congress that appropriated a half billion of dollars for a war purpose and provided that $4000 should be the highest salary paid in the adminis-tration of that great sum. The Congress of the United States unfor-tunately seems almost entirely unaware of the fact that men of ability and experience are worth money and must be paid adequately if proper public service is to be secured. While the formulation of the broad plans for administering the law have been in the hands of. men of unusual ability, we have the future to guard, and, if possible, the mining industry should see to it that the Internal Revenue Department is permitted by Congress to pay salaries that will enable it to secure men of the ability and experience necessary to insure proper consideration of the industry. Another fact to which I would call attention is the difference between the business and the economic, or economists', points of view as to what a mine is. The economists have properly, from their point of view, classed a mine as a wasting asset, but the average metal mine is not a wasting asset if it is a real mine. The economists are correct in a broad sense in that every ton of ore taken out diminishes the orebody by that amount. When it comes to the consideration of an individual mine from the business standpoint, the future of that mine rests on unfore-seeable events-the discovery of new orebodies or the development of old bodies beyond the point of probable expectations. Every going mine must develop new ore each year to replace that extracted, and, .during all but the last one or two years of its activity, actually does so. Instead of being a "wasting asset" such a mine, from the practical stand-point which must control valuation, is an "increasing asset." From

The phase changes occurring in low carbon steel during hot strip mill rolling are shown to be metallurgically significant when related to commonly used temperature control points, particularly finishing and coiling temperatures. In combination, these temperatures are shown to have an important influence on the level and uniformity of hardness, grain size, and carbide characteristics of the finished hot and cold rolled sheets. PRODUCTION of wide flat-rolled products ordinarily requires a number of operations in sequence to prepare the material for shipment to the customer. Most products are tailor-made for specific end uses, with each operation contributing certain properties to the finished material. Since the characteristics imparted to the semifinished product by a given step in processing carry through to the finished product in varying degrees, it is important that the intermediate stages of production of flat-rolled strip be carried out with the same care which characterizes the last or finishing operations. The step of hot strip mill rolling is common to the production of all of the various types of flat-rolled product; therefore, the hot strip rolling is an especially important point at which to recognize and control those variables which have an effect on the surface characteristics and metallurgical properties of the finished product and which influence the ease of conducting subsequent operations. Orders entered at a producing mill usually show an end use or describe an article or part into which the ordered product is to be fabricated. Applying his experience as to the properties necessary in a finished sheet to suit the end use and to perform successfully in the fabrication involved, the metallurgist selects a steel of suitable composition and deoxidation practice, and slabs of appropriate dimensions are produced for rolling on the hot strip mill. At this stage of processing, the metallurgist faces the problem of controlling hot strip mill practice in the light of his diagnosis of the properties necessary to meet the end use, paying due attention to the accompanying problem of producing a strip which can meet processing requirements on subsequent units in the mill. It is the purpose of this paper to describe some of the factors which he must consider in solving these problems and to indicate some of the principles which guide him. Equipment, Physical Requirements of the Strip, and Temperature Measurement The metallurgist must, of course, be familiar with the physical layout of the mill, the temperature-measuring equipment available, and the physical requirements of the hot strip product before he can apply his metallurgical knowledge to the problem; hence, the first section will consist of a brief discussion of these matters. The usual hot strip mill consists of reheating furnaces, five or six roughing stands including a scale-breaker, holding table, and second scalebreaker, six-stand finishing mill, runout table with spray cooling facilities, and coilers. A schematic diagram of a typical layout is shown in Fig. 1. Slab temperatures are primarily a function of heating time and furnace temperatures, while mill speeds, spray practice, drafting practice, available water pressure, temperature of the cooling water, cross sectional dimensions of the strip, coil size, and equipment limitations, either singly or in combination, determine what rolling temperatures are practical on a given hot strip mill unit. Thus, it is possible that a set of temperatures which can be utilized successfully on one mill cannot be used on another. However, adjustments in temperatures and rolling practice can usually be made to develop the desired metallurgical properties. In addition to the metallurgical properties developed through proper temperature control, the hot strip mill must also provide strip with certain physical attributes which may be summarized as follows: Strip Cross Section—The strip contour should conform to a section which will give the best results in the cold reduction operation. This is generally recognized as a strip with 0.001 to 0.003 in. crown or shoulder-to-shoulder convexity depending on width, and freedom from concave, flat, or wedge-shaped cross sections which cause metal buildup in cold reduction. Excessive drop off in thickness at the edges can also be very detrimental in cold reducing to light gages. Gage, Width, and Camber—All of these must be controlled. For example, rundown or increasing thickness from the front to the back of the coil results in nonuniformity in the thickness of hot-rolled sheet product and in added difficulty with gage and welds in cold reduction. Similarly, excessive width variation is the cause of guide trouble and excessive edge scrap at later stages of processing, while excessive camber is the source of a variety of processing troubles. Type of Oxide—Product intended for pickling should have a predominance of the type of oxide most easily removable in sulfuric acid. During the past 20 years the advantages of reinforced concrete as a substitute for timbering in so-called permanent mine openings have been fully recognized, and its use has become almost general practice in the larger mines. The term "permanent mine openings" is used advisedly and is assumed to embrace such openings as ventilation shafts, material shafts and main hoisting shafts, with their adjacent stations, ore pockets, etc. In the concreting of such openings, the actual cost as compared with that of timbering has been of secondary consideration, the support of large openings, elimination of fire hazards, and prevention of interruptions to production being the primary objectives. The ultimate economy, however, of lining such openings with concrete when they are to remain in use during the entire life of the mine, and especially when they are in bad ground, will seldom be questioned. During this 20-year period there have appeared in engineering publications a number of interesting articles on the use of concrete in mines, nearly always describing some specific project of major proportions, such as the concreting of ore pockets, large stations or main hoisting shafts. Such articles are unquestionably of interest, since the projects require considerable engineering thought, not only in the method of excavating large openings, but in their engineering design as well. Concreting of main hoisting shafts, particularly when this is done with the least possible interruption to production, provides some interesting problems. The concreting of haulage drifts of the dimensions commonly found in mines, on the other hand, soon develops into a routine operation, therefore it is with some hesitancy that the author attempts to prepare an article on this subject. The writer can recall only one article on the concreting of mine haulageways, although several articles have been written concerning the concreting of tunnels considerably larger in dimensions than those required in general mine practice.' From the scarcity of articles on the subject, it would seem that the concreting of haulage drifts is still far from being considered general

A preliminary investigation of the tensile properties of a Cu-Al single crystals showed the presence of a rather strong yield-point effect (drop in flow stress after initial yielding). The object of this research was to investigate its origin and behavior. a Cu-Al alloys are particularly interesting because diffuse X-ray scattering measurements by Davies and Cahn,' Houska and Averbach,' and Borie established the presence of short-range order. The degree of local order may be changed with heat treatment.' cottrel14 suggested that the presence of local order might result in a yield-point effect, and thus the possibility exists here for experimentally ascertaining the importance of short-range order with respect to yield points in these alloys. Since a 12 pct difference exists between the atomic sizes, elastic or Cottrell locking5 must also be considered. Further, Howie and swanne have shown that the stacking fault energy of copper is reduced by aluminum additions. The width of extended dislocations should thereby increase. hus the conditions appear attractive for Suzuki locking.' Finally, the possibility of stress-induced order at dislocations, schoeck locking,' must also be examined, EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys up to 14 at. pct Al were prepared by induction melting high-purity (99.999 pct) Cu and (99.996 pct) Al in a graphite boat under a dynamic vacuum of 5 X 10o mm of Hg. After homogenizing the ingots at 900°C for at least 24 hr under vacuum, they were rolled with intermediate anneals to strips 1.55 mm thick. Single crystals 10 in. long were grown by lowering strips, contained in a split graphite mold sealed in fused quartz at 5 X lo-' mm of Hg, through a single coil induction heater at a constant rate of 1/2 in. per hr. Tensile specimens 1.25 in. long were cut from the single crystal strips and reduced cross sections about 0.7 in. long and 3.0 to 3.5 mm2 in area were introduced by filing and abrading.8 To remove the worked portion about 10 pct of the cross-sectional area was removed by etching. Back-reflection Laue photographs of a filed and etched specimen were taken before and after annealing at 900°c for 24 hr. Small, well defined Laue spots were obtained with no visual difference in the two photographs. Further, specimens with and without the reduced sections began yielding at about the same stress. Hence, for our purposes, filing and abrading did not affect the structure of the specimens. Each single crystal specimen was annealed at 900° c in vacuum for at least 24 hr and furnace cooled; while cooling through the range of 250o to 200°c, the rate was about 55°C per hr.
