SCREENED pipe is designed with the view of restraining the fine, free-running sands of the production zone from entering oil wells. Its successful use is dependent on a number of factors. The nature and effects of some of these factors can be determined through experiment and observation, but some of the elements that have a distinct bearing on the use of screened pipe can be evaluated only by estimate. The important subsurface conditions which affect the use of screened pipe are: 1. Depth of production zone. 2. Extent of production zone. 3. Reservoir pressure. 4. Character and relative quantity of oil and gas. 5. Character of sediments a. Consolidation of beds. b. Variation in beds. c. Grain-size gradation of sands. d. Free-running characteristics of sand from different levels. Aside from the use. of mechanical equipment and tools, the measures to be taken in the installation of screened pipe involve: 1. Size of liner. 2. Length of liner. 3. Design and mesh of screen. 4. Portion of liner to be screened. 5. Manner of setting liner. 6. Preparation of or washing of the well before or during the setting of the screen. 7. Manner of bringing in the well. 8. Manner of flowing the well. Values applicable to the actual subsurface conditions that exist at any well can only be approximated. The accuracy of the estimate will be measured by the amount and quality of the evidence at hand and the personal factor of ability to interpret the evidence fairly, whether

DESCRIPTION. ACCORDING to the estimates prepared by the U. S. Geological Survey, the area underlain by workable coal-beds in the United States is 496,776 sq. miles. Of this total area, 480 sq. miles contain the entire anthracite coal-fields of Pennsylvania. The bituminous coal-fields are estimated to be contained in areas aggregating 250,051 sq. miles. The grade of coal between bituminous and lignite, and which is designated by the Geological Survey as " sub-bituminous," is estimated to be contained within areas aggregating 97,636 sq. miles, while the areas containing lignite aggregate 148,609 sq. miles. The coal-fields are divided, for the sake of convenience in classification, into six main provinces, as follows: 1. The Eastern. Province, containing the anthracite coal-fields of Pennsylvania and the bituminous coal-fields of the Appalachian region-namely, those of western Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, and small outlying areas in North Carolina. 2. The Interior .Province, containing the bituminous coal-producing regions of Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, western Kentucky, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas. 3. The Gulf Province, containing the lignite-areas of Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Texas. 4. The Northern or Great Plains Province, containing the lignite and sub-bituminous areas of North and South Dakota, eastern Montana, and northeastern Wyoming. 5. The Rocky Mountain Province, containing the bituminous and sub-bituminous areas of western Montana and western Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico. 6. The Pacific Coast Province, containing-the areas of Washington, Oregon, and California.

This paper does not pretend to advance any facts or improvements not known to many members of the Institute, but is intended merely to give a few practical hints on preliminary tests, and to call attention to a possible enlarged field for the cyanide process in the treatment of some silver-ores, which merits investigation. Broadly considered, the choice of a process for the treatment of silver-ores in Mexico is confined to the following alternatives: (1) Concentration for treatment by smelting; (2) milling and pan-amalgamation; (3) the patio and Ortega process; [4) chloridizing roast and lixiviation; (5) chloridizing roast and cyaniding; and (6) cyaniding of the crude ore. These methods of treatment may also be combined, and cyaniding or concentration, or both, may be introduced, at what-ever stage it is found to be most advantageous. The characteristics of the ore (especially its gold-content) and local conditions, such as distance from railway, cost of fuel, amount of water available, vary so much that it is impossible to make general comparisons between the different processes, either as to extraction or cost. Concentration and subsequent smelting may be made very expensive by long-distance transportation of concentrates; pan-amalgamation is undoubtedly expensive; and the patio process is barred when the ore contains appreciable amounts of gold, by reason of its poor extraction of that metal; yet there are many ores for which each of these processes is especially adapted, and the expense of treatment is compensated by the results obtained.

The Selective Media Process was developed by the author in a laboratory provided by The Steams-Roger Manufacturing Co. It is the outcome of an investigation into the possibilities of coarse beneficiation by sink and float without using the conventional heavy media. Commercial work to date has been limited to the treatment of minus 3/8-in. iron ore at the Hill Trumbull washing plant of the Cleveland Clifis Iron Co., at Calumet, Minnesota. Two cut away prints of the machine are shown (Figs. I and 2). A rotary conical impeller is mounted within a stationary cone (Fig. 2). This impeller is adjustable vertically by a 12-ton screw jack. The speed of the impeller can be varied from 14 to 32 r.p.m. by the Reeves variable-speed motor pulley mounted on the 7½-hp. motor drive. Attached to the bottom of the stationary cone is the automatic control valve for sink product, actuated by a ¼-hp. gear motor. The sink product is dewatered in a conventional drag driven by a 7½-hp. motor and discharged onto an inclined conveyor containing from 6 to 10 per cent moisture. Two plants are operated at the Hill Trumbull property. All the ore is first treated in a typical washing plant (Fig. 3). when treating "wash ore" a finished concentrate can be produced by the log washers and Akins classifiers, as the separation involves only fine silica (minus 48-mesh) and free iron. It is, of course, expected that manufacture of the various metal powders should involve numerous methods adapted to the specific characteristics of the metals themselves. Several methods for powdering a particular metal may be available, but the physical characteristics of the powder as produced by the several methods may be quite different. In the final analysis, the application of the metal powder dictates the physical properties that the metal powder must possess, and this, to a very large extent, will determine which of several possible methods of manufacture is adopted. Sometimes powder of the same metal is produced by more than one method, each powder having specific characteristics that make it particularly suitable for its application. For purposes of classification, the various methods of powdering metals can be grouped as follows: 1. Machining. 2. Milling (by ball mills, stamps, attrition mills, etc.). 3. Shotting (pouring molten metal into water, air, etc.). 4. Granulation (by stirring molten metal while solidifying). 5. Atomizing (disintegrating by steam, compressed air, etc.). 6. Condensation of metal vapor. 7. Reduction of oxide powders. 8. Chemical precipitation. 9. Electrolytic deposition. 10. Sintering (for producing alloy powders). 11. Formation of an alloy followed by dissolving or otherwise removing one of the alloying constituents. Machining Turnings, cuttings, filings, etc., are, of course, produced as by-products in machine work of various kinds, and find certain applications as metal powders. For example, iron powder so produced is used extensively as a reducing or precipitating agent and as a constituent in certain hard-finish cements.

WITH gold at $35 for the last four years, almost double the old figure, and 'an unlimited market, there is perhaps more activity in the mining and milling of that metal than in that of any other of the widely distributed ores. Despite threats from Russia, the Rand district is still dominant. In South Africa in 1936, 48,200,000 tons of gold ore was crushed after sorting out about 10 per cent of that mined. The pounding of 5914 trusty stamps on the 60 mi. of Rand reefs is noteworthy. At the end of 1935, 466 tube mills were operating on the Rand, the popular size being 6 1/2 by 20 ft. The grinding medium normally consists of ore pebbles picked from the ore but recently a composite load of 3-in. steel balls and pebbles has found favor for added capacity, a ratio of 2.5 tons of pebbles to one ton of halls being maintained. The total ore fed to the mills is only about 0.14 ton per hp.-hr. Such a slow rate 'of feed cannot help but result in overgrinding. Ball mills, 9 by 8 ft., some of which have come from Canada, are now being tried. Stamps have been ousted from all new flow sheets, but the old stamp mills are continually renovated and kept on duty as they are at the Homestake in the United States. Half of the world's gold and silver ores is still crushed by stamps, a few of which are single, dropping in individual mortars.'

COMPARED with the equipment used in most industrial processes, the open-hearth furnace has a relatively short life. The most important quality of an open-hearth refractory, therefore, is its rate of failure. This discussion of the physics and chemistry of the individual refractory materials will keep uppermost the question "Why, how, and where does it fail?" CAUSES OF FAILURE The principal causes of failure of open-hearth refractories are, in their order of importance : 1. Reaction with iron oxides. 2. Reaction with slag. 3. Flow and failure under load. 4. Melting. 5. Spalling. 6. Mechanical breakage. Reaction with Iron Oxides and Slag. Reaction with iron oxides and slag is by far the most important cause of failure. Liquid iron oxide comes near to being the "universal solvent" sought for by the alchemists. Among the materials commonly used in the open-hearth furnace, magnesia has the greatest resistance to this liquid and fireclay the least. The relations of iron and oxygen at high temperatures are illustrated in Fig 14-18. The liquid iron oxide that forms wherever iron is in contact with air or combustion gases cannot be given a definite formula. The percentage of oxygen at steelmaking temperatures may range from 21 to 28 (iron 79 to 72), depending upon the temperature and the oxygen pressure and also upon whether or not the liquid is in equilibrium with metallic iron. Mt. Newman Mining Co. is now completing an expansion program, begun even before initial construction was complete, which will result in the ability to ship up to 35 million tpy of iron ore by early 1973. Located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, the mine at Mt. Whaleback is about 700 road miles north of Perth and 265 railroad miles south of the port facilities at Port Hedland. Development of the tertiary crushing and screening facilities best illustrates the orderly, but rapid, sequence through which the capacity of the port loading terminal has been expanded. When the present program is completed, crushing and shiploading capability will reach - - 35 million tpy. Operations commenced in 1969 with 3 crusher lines in service; and despite the 5-million annual ton rating, 6.46 million tons of ore were shipped during the first full year of operation. With continuing increase in ore sales, expansion to an annual capacity of 12 million tons was authorized, and installation of two more crusher lines was begun. As a part of this program, provision for installation of a sixth crusher at some future date was included in the planning; but before construction was completed, new ore sales contracts demanded further expansion to an annual rate of 20 million tons, and the sixth crusher line was authorized. The distributing and collecting conveyors had been designed for extension in length and increase in capacity, therefore, conveyor service was provided for the additional crushers with additional belting and hardware only.

Experiments have been carried out to study the effect of an applied stress on strain aging in steel. It was found that the stress-induced strain aging reaction proceeds rapidly in the temperature range of 0° to 60°C. The variation of stress-induced strain aging with plastic strain, aging time, and temperatures is reported. The activation energy for the stress-induced strain aging was found to be 10,000 cal per mol for the steel used in this investigation. VARIOUS observations1-5 have been made of the influence of an applied stress upon the yielding of iron and steel. However, there have been only cursory studies of the effect of an applied tensile stress upon strain aging in iron and steel1,2 The following represents the results of a preliminary study of strain aging as influenced by the application of an external tensile load during the aging process. For the most part, previous experimental work on strain aging can be classified into two parts. First, the experimental technique involved a direct determination of mechanical properties of a suitable specimen that has been plastically deformed to a constant strain and aged generally at a temperature of the order of 200°C, with the aging times varying from about 1/10 to 2 hr.6-8 The second classification of strain aging experiments involves an indirect determination of strain aging by means of physical property such as electrical resistivity or internal friction as a function of the aging time at a constant temperature and strain.9-12 The latter results have

The Sparrows Point plant of Bethlehem Steel Co., southeast of Baltimore, is the largest Bethlehem plant, with an annual rated capacity of 6.2 million ingot tons. There is considerable diversity of product, but a high percentage is sheet, tin plate, galvanized sheets, and rod and wire. The large amount of light-weight end product requires a number of pickling installations that necessarily consume large quantities of sulfuric acid. In the coking operations sulfuric acid is also consumed in recovery of ammonia as ammonium sulfate and in treatment of recovered light oil derivatives. Total sulfuric acid consumption in the plant is currently approaching 10,000 tons per month, of which 55 to 60 pct is required for pickling. In 1951 the acute sulfur shortage caused grave concern as to future sulfuric acid supply for the Sparrows Point plant. Raw materials for acid making were already at hand in the form of hydrogen sulfide and pyrites sufficient to produce nearly half the sulfuric acid required at that time. It was also known that the Bethlehem mining activities would produce additional pyrites in the future. Late in 1951 Bethlehem management decided to build a 250-ton sulfuric acid plant at Sparrows Point to utilize these raw materials. The plant was built and put in operation in May 1953. The steel plant has expanded considerably since 1951, and it is now necessary to operate the acid plant far over rated capacity in order to supply plant demand. Production of acid in 1954 amounted to 93,000 tons.

THE Seventh International Petroleum Exposition and Congress to be held in Tulsa, Okla., Oct. 4 to 11, inclusive, in true western spirit promises to be bigger and better than ever. The Exposition has become an established institution. It gives opportunity to petroleum engineers, technologists, and operators to see each year at one place what the tool makers and machinery manufacturers have to offer which is new or better. It has truly become a place "where men, methods and machinery meet." It is also a convenient focus for technical meetings of various kinds devoted to petroleum and natural gas problems. 'The Petroleum Division of the A. I. M. E. has for several years held its chief fall meeting at Tulsa just preceding the opening of the Es- position. This year our meeting will be on Oct. 2 and 3 and it will be held as usual at Hotel Mayo. The Mid- Continent Oil and Gas Association will, as usual, hold a meeting during the Exposition and this year the Petroleum Division of the A. S. M. E. will hold a three- day session, Oct. 6-8, in the auditorium on the Esposition grounds. In all, six technical sessions are planned by this Society, and aside from reports of committees some 20 technical papers are to be presented. Members of the Institute should attend its own meeting and stay over for as many days as possible for the other meeting at which they will hear and see much of helpful interest.

INCE1 proposed that electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged particles was responsible for slime-coating. Del Giudice2 postulated the metathetic formation of a cementing compound. Wark3 suggested that prevention of slime-coating was related to peptization of the slime. [ ] In the experiments of Table I the technique employed was essentially that of del Giudice, with the difference that the particle was examined under a film of water rather than dry.4 In general, the polished particle was agitated for 2 min. in a pulp consisting of 12.5 grams of the slime (-200 mesh) and 50 c.c. of distilled water, washed in three baths of distilled water, and examined at 220 diameters with the Leitz Ultropak. Observations of Brownian movement were made at 850 diameters with dark-field illumination. Several of these experiments do not jibe with the metathesis theory. According to published solubilities,5,6 the lead salts of the anions in experiments [c] through g are more insoluble than lead carbonate, therefore should prevent the formation of lead carbonate on the galena surface. In experiment [i] the calcium oxalate, which presumably was on the calcite surfaces, should have permitted the formation of a lead carbonate cement by virtue of its greater solubility. Experiments [j] through m show that the addition of lime accelerates the deposition of quartz onto a galena surface. The writer is unable to postulate a satisfactory cementing compound, according to the metathesis theory, to explain this effect. A PHASE diagram showing boundary curve and quantity of liquid in the two-phase region was determined for a mixture of natural gas and natural gasoline in the region of its critical conditions. The tempera-tures and pressures of phase measurements were in the range of 85° to 212° F. and 1300 to 2600 lb, per sq. in., respectively, with the critical conditions at 169.5° F. and 2615 lb. per sq. in. abs, Color phenomena were observed in the region of the boundary curve from 102° to 192° F. Approximate densities of the single-phase and two-phase regions and analysis of the system are included. Boundary curves between the single-phase and the two-phase regions have been determined for several binary mixtures containing hydro-carbons. 2,3,4,6,7,10,11,12,14 These investigators did not report the relative amounts of liquid and vapor within the two-phase region. The equilib-rium values obtained from the dew-point and bubble-point data can be used to compute the lines showing percentage of liquid on the pressure-temperature phase diagrams but the positions of the lines near the critical temperature and pressure are uncertain. Relative amounts of vapor and liquid were obtained for a gasoline and a naphtha' within the two-phase area but not in, the region of the critical temperature and pressure. The bubble-point and dew-point lines, as well as the percentage liquid lines within the two-phase region, were determined by visual observations in glass apparatus.

As already announced in the January Bulletin, this publication will be issued during the coming year monthly instead of bi-monthly as heretofore. Among other reasons for this change, it is desired to effect thereby the earlier transmission to members of important papers, lists of candidates for membership, and other items of timely information. Spokane Meeting and Excursions. Further details of the 97th meeting of the Institute have been sent to members in the Circular of May 8, 1909. The list of those intending to go on the excursion is filling up, and since preference in position of state-room or berth is given in the order of application, members and guests who expect to accompany the party and have not yet communicated with Mr.. Theodore Dwight, 29 West 39th St., New York, N. Y., are earnestly requested to do so without delay. For convenience of the members a summary of the additional information is here presented. A special train of Pullman cars will leave Chicago about September 15. This train will be side-tracked at all places visited, and the sleepers will be available for lodging and the dining-car for meals during the entire trip, except during the Yellowstone Park tour. The general cost of the trip per member will be $300, which includes transportation, berth, and meals for the entire trip from Chicago back to Chicago, almost 6,000 miles, and the tour through. Anaconda's Jackpile-Paguate mine, located between Albuquerque and Grants, N.M., is situated at an elevation of 6000 ft in a semi-arid desert region. The original Jackpile deposit was discovered by Anaconda air and ground exploration parties in Nov. 1951. A large percentage of the uranium mined in New Mexico comes from the Jackpile-Paguate, which is one of, if not the largest, open pit uranium mines in the world. From 1953 to the present, 120 million tons of overburden, mining waste, and low-grade material have been removed to produce approximately 10 million tons of merchantable uranium ore, having an average grade of about 0.25% uranium oxide. Identifying the Orebody Surface drill holes delineate the ore bodies on a predetermined grid which varies in dimension but usually affords 100-ft control. These holes are probed immediately after drilling by geophysical logging trucks, resulting in a gamma log and digital readout from each hole. From this information it is possible to arrive at an almost immediate conversion to percentage of U3O8 on 6-in. intervals. Initially a hole is probed at a reconnaissance speed of 10 fpm with a time constant of 8 sec. Wherever the gamma recording goes off scale on an initial run, that particular zone is rerun at 2 fpm and at a time constant of 2 sec. This time constant is the interval that emissions are counted and accumulated for recording purposes. The search radius of the Geiger probe is approximately 18 in.

ABOUT three years ago at a coal mining institute meeting, it was predicted that mechanical load-ing underground would progress faster than either the electric coal-cutting machines or electric loco-motives had in previous years. This prediction has proved correct so far. In 1925 over 6,000,000 tons of,coal was loaded mechanically underground in the United States and it is estimated that the 1926 tonnage will reach 10,000,000. The use of electric mining machines and locomotives .has prepared the way for quick results. Most coal mines are now equipped with electric power and have a competent staff who understands its use. In spite of this advantage the introduction of the loading machines brings many new problems. Im-proved and concentrated transportation; doing the drilling, shooting, tracklaying and face timbering with company men instead of the former tonnage men; doing the work on the new basis in an economical and efficient manner; altering or modifying mining systems where necessary to further improve the work and reduce oper-ating costs; improving the percentage of lump coal and reducing the slack content where desirable; improving the cleaning of the coal and obtaining a more dependable .and uniform output are a few of the problems that must be met. Each of the different types of loaders now on the market has its particular advantages and disadvantages for a given mining condition. Even with the same mining conditions one type will work well under one ;system of handling, whereas another may favor another system or mining method.

In the course of a return flight from Olympia, Wash., to Laramie, Wyo., an airborne magnetometer profile was recorded continuously. The level of flight was controlled at barometric levels along segments of the flight. Barometric altitude was changed from 3000 ft to a maximum of 12,000 ft above mean sea level to take care of topographic variations. Terrain clearance varied from 800 to 7300 ft. Horizontal positions were obtained by recording and tying to cities, towns, airports, river crossings, and other landmarks in the course of the flight. Figs. 1-6 show the course of the flight and the general geologic and tectonic features traversed. The flight line begins south of Olympia, Wash., and proceeds south across the Puget-Willemette depression to the Columbia River. Thence it proceeds eastward along the Washington-Oregon border across the Cascade Mts. and lava flows and the Umatilla basin to Pendleton, Ore. From Pendleton it traverses the Blue Mts. uplift of Oregon in a southeasterly direction, and then to the Boise basin of southwestern Idaho. The flight line swings in an easterly direction as it passes over the Snake River downwarp to the south of the Idaho batholith. It then passes over the northern portion of the Great Basin and the heavily overthrust area at the intersection of the Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming borders. The flight then assumes an easterly course to cross the series of basins and uplifts of southern Wyoming and terminates near the western flank of the Laramie uplift.
