RECOGNITION of the benefits to be gained from the continuous casting of molten steel into finished or semifinished products has been given by scientific minds since the very beginnings of steel plant technology. In fact, Sir Henry Bessemer is credited with the first of a long list of patents' issued by the U. S. Patent Office for a process which would accomplish this desirable end. None of these early ideas attained practical success and, as a result, the conventional method of teeming into ingot molds became an integral part of modern steelmaking operations. This procedure, although refined to keep pace with the changes which have come about in steelmaking and finishing facilities, is recognized to have inherent shortcomings which adversely affect manufacturing costs and steel quality. Interest in the continuous casting of steel persists because the process is directed toward avoiding some obvious weaknesses of conventional ingot casting. It has been recognized that should it be possible to substitute any of the continuous casting techniques under current development for ingot casting, it would no longer be necessary to make large capital investments in primary rolling equipment, the sole purpose of which is to reduce ingot castings to a form rollable on finishing mills. The results reported in the continuous casting of non-ferrous metals and specialty steels indicate that in addition to avoiding the primary rolling mills there is some basis for expecting significant improvements in yield, surface, and internal quality. Recognizing the shortcomings of the conventional procedures, the Inland Steel Co., in cooperation with Atlas Steels Ltd. and the Freyn Dept. of the Kop- pers Co. Inc., embarked upon a program to evaluate certain aspects of continuous casting in order to determine whether the process could be applied practically to an existing integrated steel plant producing 'large tonnages of carbon steels. TO assist in this evaluation a study was carried out in which several types of low carbon steel were continuously cast in an existing machine. It is the purpose of this paper to review some of the results obtained in the casting studies and to interpret the information that was obtained so as to indicate factors that must be considered in assessing operating limitations and plant capacities. Despite the early interest in the continuous casting of steel, the actual application to the steel industry is relatively recent. At present, there are about 25 operating plants casting steel, most of which have been built in the past decade. None of these plants could be classified as large in terms of the tonnages that are being processed by the major integrated steel plants. In contrast to the situation in the steel industry, there has been widespread adoption of the continuous process in the casting of nonferrous alloys, particularly aluminum and copper. As a result, much of the basic information that was required to apply the process to steel was developed in the nonferrous industries. In this respect, a most important contribution was the development of the Junghans2 system, which was initially designed for the casting of nonferrous metals and later applied to the casting of steel. Alternative methods for casting have also been proposed by Babcock and Wilcox Tube Co.,'" the British Iron and Steel Research Association,5 and the Gebruder Bohler A. G.13 Each of these methods is now being used successfully for the casting of special steels in small experimental plants or in modest sized commercial steelworks. Beginning with theoretical concepts of oil drainage, this paper demonstrates that the flow of petroleum into a well from a stratum of oil-saturated sand of uniform texture increases with the diameter of the well. This conclusion is supported by experimental evidence. It appears that if a well may be reamed to a diameter of 20 ft. within the oil sand, its production will be approximately doubled. A novel method is proposed for forming and supporting a cavity of such proportions within the oil-producing stratum. PETROLEUM occurs, in nature, as a fluid saturating the pore spaces between the grains of porous rocks or aggregations of rock particles such as sand, sandstone, conglomerate, shale, limestone, etc. The oil, under the influence of gas pressure, hydrostatic pressure, gravity, earth pressure, and, perhaps, other natural forces, is caused to flow through the porous "reservoir rock" into wells penetrating the stratum in which the oil occurs. The principal moving force is the pressure of dissolved or occluded natural gas within the oil, though this;, force is assisted by gravity and by the hydrostatic or buoyant pressure of ground water about the edges of the "pool." The wells, providing outlets to the surface, are centers of reduced pressure and the flow of rock fluids into a particular well is usually an expression of the difference in pressure existing between the space within the well and that of the stored oil .within the reservoir rock. The greater this differential pressure, the more rapidly will oil flow from the source rock into the well. Opposing movement of the oil from the reservoir rock into the well are certain natural forces related to the rock structure, such as pore friction and capillarity, and certain others related to the physical properties of the oil, such as viscosity and adhesion. The differential pressure between the well and the boundaries of the area drained by it must be sufficient to overcome the forces opposing flow if there is to be movement of oil into the well. If by any device the resistance to movement of the oil may be reduced, the oil will flow into the well at a more rapid rate and the effective area of drainage will be increased.

The correlation of property changes during precipitation with structure has progressed, sometimes rapidly but other times more slowly, since the fundamental discovery of Merica, waltenberg and Scott.1 The predominent factor that hampered the progress has been limitations imposed by the various detection methods. Refiments in x ray diffraction tech-niques and in metallographic methods, which have been extended by the electron microscope, have contributed new information within the last few years. These permit an extension of the theory as proposed by Mehl and Jetter in 1940'2 Now that a sufficient number of alloys has been investigated to establish a general mechanism of the precipitation process, a correlation of the facts into a generally applicable theory of age-hardening is both warranted and desirable. The purpose of the paper is to provide an orderly correlation of the phenomenological facts of precipitation hardening. Speculation 011 mechanism of hardening will be confined to that consistent with existing theories of hardening, Age-hardening accompanies the formation of a new structure, the precipitate, as provided by a11 alloy system ill which solid solubility decreases with decreasing temperature. Upon this premise alone all such systems would be expected to include age-hardenable alloys. Alas, this is not always the case. Few attempts have been made to explain the variable degree of age-hardening among different alloys or to explain the influence of small alloying additions upon the hardening. THE re-crystallization of metals has been the subject of much scientific investigation, some of which has resulted in a better understanding of this extremely important and interesting phenomenon. Unfortunately, while many have propounded theories of re-crystallization, but a few have presented experimental evidence as to how it takes place. If this can be determined the question, why re-crystallization occurs, may be answered more definitely. Re-crystallization in single phase metals consists of a complete rearrangement and re-sizing of the grains, of which the structure is composed, while the type of structure remains the same. That is to say, if the structure before re-crystallization is composed of a number of polyhedral grains of different shape and size, a particular spot after re-crystallization will be seen to consist of grains in no way different from the original except in size and shape. The re-crystallized grains may be smaller or larger, depending on the treatment received; and, while the re-crystallization may be brought about by means of heat treatment only in passing through a critical range, yet it is common knowledge that single phase metals subjected to cold working are possessed of a tendency toward re-crystallization, even if the heating does not reach critical range. The study of re-crystallization would, of course, be much easier if we had single crystals of any metal as the original material with which to study the phenomenon of re-crystallization, since it would permit the observation of structural changes at what amounts to enormous magnification, by changing the scale of the specimen. In metals of more normal grain size the crystal boundaries introduce complications, but the process, it may be assumed, is essentially the same. Such an opportunity

SUMMARY THE results of an enquiry into the structural nature of some 70 iron alloys containing both nickel and chromium over a considerable range of concentration 'are briefly described in this paper. This study is a part of a comprehensive program of investigation into alloys involving chromium in progress at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories. All the compositions studied contained carbon in amount comparable to commercial alloys.

(Butte Meeting, August, 1913.) THE structural relations existing between cuprous oxide and copper were first systematically studied by Heyn1, who suggested that a study of the microstructure of refined copper might be substituted for the analytical methods in vogue for determining the oxygen content of copper coming .;from the refining furnace. Hofman, Green and Yerxa,2 in their paper A Laboratory Study of the Stages in the Refining of Copper, working along the lines suggested by Heyn, showed that a study off the microstructure could be made to yield a correct estimate of the oxygen content of the specimen of refined copper under examination. In order to determine the oxygen content of the specimen of refined copper under examination a photomicrograph was first made. From the relative areas of copper and eutectic, the percentage of cuprous oxide and the corresponding percentage of oxygen were then readily calculated. It was found that the values for oxygen thus obtained corresponded closely with the analytical results. With the idea of utilizing, this method of determining the oxygen content of each charge dipped from the refining furnaces at the Boston & Montana Reduction Plant, the physical testing laboratory was equipped with suitable apparatus for carrying out the work. It may be of interest to describe certain of the methods which have been worked out in, this connection and give such data as have been obtained bearing on the effect of the oxygen content of refined copper upon its conductivity.

IT will be recalled that when educational instruction for the mineral industry began at Freiberg, at the beginning of the eighteenth century, the original aim was to organize and systematize the procedures previously followed by young men in gaining -familiarity with the technology then in use. There must have been many other ideas current, even then, as to just what a young man needed to learn in order to become capable of assuming 'responsibility for the supervision and direction of such technical work. The problem in Europe was decidedly different .from that in nineteenth-century America, because some of the European mines were actually owned and operated by the governing authority and the others were supervised, regulated, and taxed by it. The American problem was the e5cient performance of technical operations; the European one was regulatory supervision. It was natural, therefore, that in the development of educational processes in Europe stress was laid on those factors which conserved and protected the interests of the state. The study of mineralogy and geology, leading to correct judgments as to the workability and value of mineral deposits; assaying, which gave the means of quantitative measurements, as did surveying; chemistry, which furnished a better basis of understanding for assaying, mineralogy, and geology; and physics and mathematics, which are the bases for the understanding and efficient use of mechanical appliances, became the core of systematic instruction, for the mineral industry. It was early recognized that men could learn more than was already known about all of these subjects and education took on that dichotomy which still characterizes it; the teaching of established knowledge to the unlearned, and that of extending of the bounds of knowledge, now loosely termed research, which after two and a half centuries of work still shows

A STURDY and consistent expansion of the metal industry occurred in 1947 exemplified by an increase of approximately 30 per cent in steel consumption over 1946. For this major reason, ferroalloy metals have seen their most useful and important peace-time year. The current domestic rate of consumption of high-grade ferroalloy ores, together with added consumption of new foreign producers as well as for eign nationals' restrictions on high-grade exports, makes very evident the increasing difficulties of obtaining sufficient high-grade ores. This accentuates the need for new and less expensive methods of production of ferro-alloy metals of higher purity from lower-grade domestic resources. As an important factor in preparedness, procurement of these high-grade, -critical ferroalloy minerals and metals for our nation's stock piles is a most important task. Also, this stock-piling can be the means of supplying incentive for the industrial development of the new metallurgical processes and plants necessary for the recovery of ferroalloy metals from our domestic low-grade deposits.

LEAD stocks at the beginning of 1943 were comfortable when compared with those of other base metals such as copper, zinc and tin. This situation was early recognized by W.P.B. and other Governmental agencies and every effort was made to encourage the substitution of lead for these latter metals in all essential uses. Despite this apparently healthy condition, lead was not denied participation in the various measures inaugurated by the Government to relieve metal shortages. Thus in the Mexican trade agreement, effective Jan. 20, the tariff on two important classes of lead importss was halved. Similarly, in the setting up of B quota premiums, a B base was allotted to lead, with all pro¬duction above this figure receiving an additional payment of 2.75c. per lb., or a total payment of 11.75c. per lb. At about the same time it was announced that all quota transactions would be based upon the lead content as shown by the smelter settlement sheets. This basis was 86 percent of the lead content for all ores shipped to custom milling plants and 95 per cent for ores and concentrates shipped to custom smelting plants. The importance of this action can be appreciated when in the Coeur d'Alene it was estimated as equivalent to a 5 per cent increase compared to the previous base.

SELECTIVE SERVICE must meet three important demands for man power: (1) Activities concerned with production of war goods. (2) The armed forces. (3) Civilian activities and institutions the continuance of which are essential to maintaining the structure of our American democracy. In the above enumeration of demands I have placed everything, including most of our most prized possessions and activities, after the demand for men for war production and the armed forces. To establish an order between the latter two is difficult. For the time being, at least, the Selective Service policy is to make sure that we avoid the risk of "too little and too late." No soldier, sailor, or marine should be sent from these shores to risk his life without the assurance of having a gun, clothes, food, and medical supplies. Therefore, the premium is now being placed on man power for war production and in our process of selection no stone is left unturned to see that our agencies are fully informed of the needs of war production. Our procedures set up recourses for employers of war-production man power so that their activities need not be disrupted, at least not until they have had time to train replacements.

T HE smelting industry in Utah is represented by four plants: The Midvale of the United States Smelting, Refining & Mini.ng Co., the Murray of the American Smelting and Refining Co., the Garfield of the same company and the Tooele of the Inter- na.tiona1 Smelting Co. The first two are lead smelters, the Garfield plant is a copper smelter while the last named embraces both a lead and copper smelter. A total daily smelting capacity of over 10,000 tons is represented, of which 4000 tons is lead smelting capacity. With the exception of Tooele, forty miles distant, all of these smelters are within twenty miles of Salt Lake City. Pyrometallurgical operations in this district are con- fined entirely to the production of unrefined bullion, which is shipped east to the various refineries of the respective companies. The smelting industry in this state had its beginning away back in the latter days of the Civil War, many years before the completion of the trans-continental railroad. Ox teams were still bringing their companies of better fixed Mormon emigrants across the plains to the valley of the Great Salt Lake and those in lesser circumstances were still pushing their hand- carts over the same roads to the temporary abode

Aerial photography was once a crude, uncertain tool. Today it is a precision mapping instrument which saves important time and money for strip mining and other industry. Aerial photography began in the boxkite days of aviation. The Army first used it for rough reconnaissance photographs. Then, in the early Twenties, industry began to use aerial photographs of their plants and facilities for advertising or annual reports. The quality of these pictures was not very good by today's standards, but this work began the development of better cameras, better lenses, better photographic techniques.

A FEATURE of the International Geological Congress to be held at Pretoria, South Africa, in the summer of 1929,. will be a symposium on the gold resources of the world. In this connection the U. S. Geological Survey and Bureau of Mines have been asked to prepare a report, showing production in the United States, describing the geology of its principal gold- producing districts, and estimating reserves (a) assuming a continuation of presen6economic conditions, and (b) assuming lower costs. This report will not be completed before April 1, but data thus far assembled are here presented with the hope of profiting by discussion and by information from those well informed on any of the important gold-producing districts. Gold production in the United States rose to a maximum exceeding $100,000,000 in 1915 and then rapidly declined to about $52,000,000 in 1920. Since then it has fluctuated, but on the whole slightly declined. Reviews of the eight leading states afford the following tentative conclusions :

When a dry ball-mill grinding circuit was in- stalled at the pellet plant of Hamersley Iron Pty. Ltd., it was something of a pioneering venture, since this was one of the first instances where such a circuit had been applied to iron ore on a major scale. The Hamersley pellet plant is located in Dampier on the coast of Western Australia. The feed for it consists of -8mm fines produced as a screened product at the Mt. Tom Price mine 186 miles inland from Dampier. It was these fines that encouraged the choice of a dry grinding facility for the plant. At the outset, tests had shown that the fines could not be filtered satisfactorily with a wet grinding system. At the pelletizing plant, the fines are stockpiled, reclaimed, dry ground in ball mills, formed into pellets on balling discs, hardened on an indurating line, and stockpiled for shipment overseas. These operations are shown in Fig. 1.

MANUFACTURE is the transformation of material by the application of energy and power. The energy of a man exerted throughout a day is equivalent to about one horsepower-hour of mechanical work an amount which can be purchased for less than 2c. It is evident that manual labor is uneconomical if mechanical energy can be applied effectively, or without disproportionate expense. Since manual energy is relatively so costly, economy demands that mechanical power be employed so as to reduce the human effort connected with mining operations to a minimum. Power, like other commodities, is most efficiently produced in large quantities. Mechanical transmission, once prevailing, is being rapidly superseded by electric drive. There are many reasons for this change; such as increased production, ease and accuracy of control, convenient application, ease of moving, etc.

To the Board of' Trustees, United Engineering Society I beg to submit herewith the report of the Treasurer as of December 31, 1907. Your attention is called to the fact that the resources and liabilities, receipts and disbursements statements cover all the financial transactions of the United Engineering Society from its organization up to December 31, 1907. The income and expenses of operating the building during the whole operating period from December 1 to December 31, 1907, somewhat in excess of twelve months, are given. Included in the expenses, amounting in all to $52,647.11, will be found an item entitled "Building Equipment (construction account)." The expenditures under this item were not made for the operating expenses of the building, they represent a construction account, properly speaking, covering expenditures for furnishings and equipment of the building. The Founders' Agreement specifically provides for this class of expenditure under the provision that the Founder Societies shall each be liable for a charge not to exceed $200,000 of principal, which shall include the land and building completed and ready for occupancy, together with the " furnishings, equipment and personal property therein." Certain details of equipment are yet to be supplied, and it. is proposed in the near future to call upon the Founder Societies for an assessment on their respective land and building funds to cover this item of building equipment. Such action would enable the item of $10,039.85 to be transferred to the income account and reduce correspondingly the assessment

IN recent years, there have been many changes in mining operations in the Lake Superior district. To follow these trends on the Menominee Range of Michigan, information has been assembled from all of the iron informatior]mining operations in the area. There are 15 operating underground mines in the Iron River-Crystal Falls area of the Menominee Range. Within the past two years, two idle properties were reopened pasttwoyears,and are now producing, and a third and fourth are being reopened. Also, there are two siliceous openpits operated by independent companies outside this immediate area. Six companies operate the underground mines, employing some 1850 employees. Table I shows pertinent facts about these properties. During 1949, the largest mine in Iron County shipped 571,287 tons, and one of the newer mines shipped 39,378 tons, with a range total to 3,535,-373 tons. Since the Menominee Range was opened in the 1870's, the mines in Iron County have shipped 85,890,922 tons. From an operator's viewpoint rather than a geologist's, the ore is' classified as semi-hard, composed of hematite and limonite. It is not as soft as the ores of the Marquette Range nor is it as hard as the hard ores of the Marquette and Vermillion Ranges. The ore bodies have slate hanging walls and slate footwalls. In most cases the hanging walls and footwalls are soft and high in sulphur. The sulphur comes from pyrite, and these slates will ignite when piled more than 6 to 8 ft high. Ore is mined on this range by: 1—Sub-level stop-ing; 2—Shrinkage stoping; 3—Sub-level caving; 4— Block caving; 5—Top slicing. The predominance of these methods is in the order named. Underground drilling is important in the mining cycle. Some changes made and trends toward future changes fall into four categories: Drill bits, drill steel, drill machines, and compressed air pressures. Several types of bits have been tried and are in use. They include the detachable tungsten carbide, insert bit; the intraset steel bit, which is a conventional steel rod with tungsten carbide insert; the one-use bit; and the multiple-use bit. For many years, detachable multiple-use bits have been standard. In tests conducted recently to im- prove drilling efficiency, this bit was used as the basis for comparison. Under existing conditions, a multiple-use bit can be resharpened about three times before it is discarded. A thorough test of 2-in. tungsten carbide threaded bits was conducted under various ground conditions. 1—The drilled footage ranged from 48 to 600 ft per bit; averaging 357 ft per bit. Under these same conditions, a multiple-use bit ranged from 8 to 80 ft per bit. 2—The bit cost was greater for the insert bit in each case. 3—The average drilling speed for the insert bit was 12 in. in 62 sec and for the multiple-use bit was 12 in. in 64 sec. In a second test, 2V4 -in. tungsten carbide bits with the large 1 3/16-in. thread were used in moderately soft ground on a 152-lb drifting drill on a long feed jumbo. 1—The drilled footage ranged from 450 to 5000 ft per bit, averaging 1810 ft per bit. Under these same conditions, a multiple-use bit averaged 64 ft per bit. 2—The bit cost was reduced by the use of the insert bit. 3—No increase in drilling speed was recorded. 4—Minimum footage obtained was caused by thread failure. To improve the thread life, thread size on the rod was increased and the bit was attached to the rod with a pipe wrench. After this, bits failed in equal proportions because of cracked skirts, broken inserts, and gage loss. Tungsten carbide bits are now used in the operation where this second test was conducted because labor costs were lowered as a result of reducing the number of bits being changed by the miners. At the same operation and under the same conditions as the second test, 1Y4-in. insert bits with standard 1-in. threads were used. These bits did not drill much more than 300 ft before thread failure and were then welded to the rods and used until total failure. Sometimes this footage was considerable, sometimes it was not.
