DEFORMATION bands of surprising regularity are found in large-grained polycrystalline copper after cold-rolling (Fig. I). Individual bands frequently are large enough to permit a determination of their orientation by means of etch pits and an optical goniometer. Measurements have been made on 21 areas in seven different grains, and these, combined with X-ray studies of nine single crystals that had been cold-rolled after mounting in a polycrystal-line block, have contributed to a better understanding of the preferred orientations in rolled copper just as similar studies have for rolled iron' and brass.2.3 Particular attention was given to determining orientations that are stable during rolling and to the manner of fragmentation and rotation of unstable grains. The possible role of twinning was also carefully investigated. The texture of polycrystalline copper after cold-rolling is well established by the pole figures that have been plotted by Schmid and Staffelbach,4 Iweronowa and Schdanow,5 and Brick and Williamson,3 all of which are in substantial agreement. There has been some divergence in the list of individual "ideal" orientations that have been used to describe the texture by these observers and others,6 although the orientation (110) [112]-that is, (110) parallel to the rolling plane and [112] parallel to the rolling direction-is generally recognized as the most prominent orientation and (I12) [111] one of the lesser orientations. Other orientations have been given by some observers as (236) [533], (100) [001], and (I 10) [001]. The texture of copper has also been described as (135) [533].6.1 The sum of these orientations provides a reasonable approximation to the complete pole figure, but it does not follow that these specific orientations are necessarily of fundamental significance, for the choice of indices is arbitrary, within limits. Furthermore, a detailed investigation of the ideal orientations in cold-rolled iron discloses continuous ranges of equally favored positions rather than definite positions of high stability,1 and similarly Brick's observations in a single crystal of a brass2 suggest that all orientations in the range between (110) [113] and (110) [117] are about equally stable. MATERIALS AND METHODS The material used was vacuum-cast electrolytic copper kindly supplied by L. L. Wyman, of the General Electric Co.* Slices 1/2 in. thick and 2 1/2 in. square, cut from the ingot, were rolled with 50 per cent reduction per pass to final thicknesses between 0.02 and 0.04 in., and etched to develop cube-face etch pits suitable for goniometric work.8 The etch was light on some strips and deep in others.

Experiments were carried out to induce grain refinement during solidification by applying vibrational energy (freq 20 kc) to small specimens of bismuth, tin, and bismuth-tin alloys. The results show that if the intensity of the applied sound -field is not great enough to fragment the growing dendrites of a pure metal, no grain refinement is observed and the pain size of the dynamically nucleated specimens is the same as the grain size of a specimen statically supercooled the same amount. Bismuth specimens did not show any grain refinement; whereas, the tin specimens did show grain refinement. This phenomenon is the result of the difference in growth habit between the bismuth and tin dendrites. The bismuth-tin alloys showed grain refinement and, in addition, the segregation pattern was changed. THE solidification process is a change in phase requiring the nucleation of the solid phase from the liquid and the growth of this solid phase at the expense of the liquid phase. Since many physical properties and also the integrity of a casting are dependent on the solidification process, understanding and controlling this process are very important.' A good example in the controlling of a cast structure using heterogeneous nucleation theory is the reduction of grain size in aluminum castings by nucleation catalysis.2 This mechanism of nucleation catalysis has been explained by Turnbull.3 Another technique for grain refinement, which has received much attention but the mechanism has not been fully understood, is to vibrate the solidifying melt. Vibrations can be applied to the melt either by vibrating the mold directly or by introducing a vibrating rod into the melt.4-13 Three mechanisms have been proposed to explain this phenomenon: 1) The mechanical fragmentation of the original dendrites that grew into the melt. These crystals or fragmented dendrites act as new growth sites. 2) The nucleation of new grains in the liquid by the generation of very high pressure pulses caused by cavitation in the liquid. 3) The remelting of the dendrite arms during the solidification process. This mechanism is operative only in alloy systems and would be enhanced by stirring or mechanical vibration. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the mechanism that will increase the number of grains when mechanical energy is introduced into a solidifying melt. APPARATUS The unit used to generate the ultrasonic vibrations was manufactured by the Redford Co., and is similar to the one used in ultrasonic soldering. Fig. 1 is a sketch of the major components used for generating ultrasonic vibrations. The crystal transducer assembly consisted of four lead zirconate ti-tanate piezoelectric crystals in an aluminum holder. An acoustical horn, which was fabricated from stainless steel, was attached to the holder by a set screw. The resonant frequency of this unit was 20,000 cycles per sec. A Pyrex crucible, 4 in. in diam and 4 in. high, was contained in a hole in the top of the horn. The piezoelectric crystals changed volume when excited by an electric signal, thereby generating a sound signal which passed through the horn. The crucible was coupled to the horn by a liquid silicone oil. The purpose of the couplant was to transmit the soundwaves from the horn to the crucible. Without the couplant, much of the sound energy would be lost. The energy transmitted was sufficient at the resonant frequency used, so that acoustical cavitation always occurred in the molten metal. The presence of acoustical cavitation was detected by the characteristic hissing sound emitted from the liquid. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The influence of ultrasonic vibration on the grain refinement of bismuth, tin, and bismuth-tin alloys was studied. These metals were chosen because of their low melting temperature and the relative ease with which they can be thermally supercooled. The following procedure was used for obtaining large amounts of supercooling. Pure bismuth (99.999+), which was received in bar form, was mechanically broken into pieces small enough to be accommodated in a 50 ml beaker. About 200 to 300 g of bismuth and a few grams of SnCl2 as a flux were placed in the 50 ml beaker and melted by induction heating. The melt was held for 20 min at

A merhod based on theoretical considerations is presented for estimating srabilized performance of gas wells from data obtained from short-term flow tests. Calculated results are presented for II gas wells evaluated with four-to five-hour flow tests. For seven wells on which comparison war available, satisfactory agreement between measured and calculated performance was obfained. Although the final results are favorable, diflerences in flow capacity k,h obtained from flow tests conducted at different rates were observed. This inconsistency did not seriously affect the calculated results in the test wells. INTRODUCTION In order to negotiate the sale of gas from newly drilled gas wells and to plan otherwise for the orderly exploitation of gas reserves, it is necessary to predict the long-term withdrawal rates physically possible for each well. Since low permeability gas wells do not stabilize except after a lengthy period of flow, the operator is unable, without wasting large amounts of gas, to measure directly the stabilized performance prior to contracting for sale of the gas and connecting the well to a pipeline. This problem is not new, but is one which has recently received considerable attention because of the rising importance of natural gas in the economy and new emphasis on the development of gas reserves. Thus, a method is needed for estimating stabilized performance from information obtained from short-flow tests in which stabilized flow is not attained. Such short tests would be suitable for wells not connected to a pipeline since the tests require only small amounts of time, labor and production of gas. Other requirements of such a method are short calculation time and use of a model of the gas well and its reservoir drainage area which is as consistent as possible with present theoretical, experimental and field knowledge. The method presented herein was developed in an effort to meet these requirements. It has been named the "two-Row method". In addition to the section on the evelopment and description of the method, a description of field application of the method and a discussion of well test results are in- cluded. Finally, there is a section on an additional consideration prompted by some of the test results. The Appendix contains certain details of the derivation of the two-flow method and a sample calculation for Test Well 1. MATHEMATICAL DEVELOPMENT AND DESCRIPTION OF THE METHOD The method is based upon the following assumptions: (1) The system can be described as a finite cylindrical gas reservoir produced by a single cylindrical well located at the center of the reservoir. Flow is strictly radial. (2) Flow obeys Darcy's law except very near the well where a quadratic flow law is assumed. (3) The system is also characterized by a laminar flow skin factor. The use of a quadratic or turbulent flow term is more fully justified in Refs. 1 and 2. When such a system is opened at the wellbore to constant rate flow from an initial condition of uniform pressure distribution, the radius or drainage quickly passes through the non-Darcy flow and "skin effect" region imrnediately surrounding the well. After the drainage radius or "transient" has passed beyond this region and before it reaches the external boundary, drawdown can be expressed by'." After the drainage radius reaches the external boundary, stabilized flow exists and drawdown is given by'," Eqs. 1 and 2 form the basis for the method. The validity of these equations will now be examined in the light of some well test data previously available. It has been found by actual measurements on gas wells that the relationship between drawdown and flow rate, that is the performance curve, is closely approximated by' Eq. 3 is a straight line on log-log graph paper. Kansas produced 38,150,878 bbl. of oil in 1928 and 40,658,170 bbl. in 1929, thereby retaining its rank as fourth among the oil-producing states of this country. Production for 1928 was less than that for 1927 (Fig. 1) because of a decrease in the number of completions, but the average initial production per well (Table 1) shows an increase due to the completion of wells of comparatively large capacity in the new Valley Center pool of Sedgwick County. This increase in average initial production per well was further augmented during 1929 by completion of additional wells of comparatively large capacity in the Valley Center pool and the new Greenwich pool of Sedgwick County. Experimental data 1,2 on the energy dissipation in polycrystalline materials over a large frequency spectrum (10-2 cps to 106 cps) suggests that the quality factor [(e= Q )] is independent of the frequency providing both fluid-saturated and ferromagnetic materials are excluded from the test data. Additional data 3 suggest that the quality factors are less at high pressures than at low pressure, i.e., Q increases as the pressure increases. Observations on the dissipation of single quartz crystals with their polycrystalline counterparts indicate that the energy dissipation is less for the single crystal than for the aggregate .2 Both of the above observations, particularly the latter, are indicative of the fact that the dissipation increases with increasing surface contact within the polycrystal, i.e., a frictional attenuation scheme may be operative. Knopoff and MacDonald 4 have shown that a friction model gives rise to a quality factor frequency independence property. A partial listing of some values of Q, observed for both metals and non-metals, is given in Tables I, II, and III. In Tables I and II, the data all show Qs>Qp, i.e., the energy loss per cycle for compressional body waves is greater than that for shear waves of the same frequency. Most samples in Table III show the same effect. It is objective of this paper to suggest: (1) a frictional attenuation scheme may account for the observed losses incurred during the propagation of low amplitude stress waves in dry brittle rock and, in particular, that such a scheme can account for the observed relative magnitudes of the quality factors for P and S wave motion; (2) a friction scheme can readily explain the difference between the dynamic and static moduli in dry brittle rock; (3) a friction scheme, while in itself an intrinsically

One who has been trained in belief in the law of supply and demand and its effect upon prices finds it difficult to adjust himself to the minute regulations imposed by the New Deal, and also to the bewildering changes of government policy as expressed within a short period of time between the antitrust laws and the N.R.A., and later by the Bituminous Coal Conservation Act of 1935. A survey of the coal industry since the World War, both in this country and Great Britain, however, shows that regulation of some sort is needed if any stabilization is to be achieved and if the wage structure and economic welfare of the many communities dependent solely upon coal are to be maintained. Let us look at what has happened to the industry since 1920, which can be considered as the end of the period affected by the war influence. This discussion will be confined solely to bituminous coal, although many of the general conditions are equally applicable to anthracite, the position of which now is at least as bad as that of the softer variety. Since 1920—to the end of 1934—the production of coal has decreased from 568.7 million to 358.4 million tons, or 37 per cent; the number of mines from 14,766 to 6,258, or 58 per cent; the average annual production per mine has changed from 38,512 to 57,425 tons, or 50 per cent. The number of large mines has increased considerably, and the number of men employed has decreased from 639,547 to 458,011, a reduction of 28 per cent, while the average output per employee has changed from 4.0 to 4.4 tons, or an increase of 10 per cent. The average price per ton of coal at the mine has varied from $3.75 to $1.75. During that time wages decreased largely until 1933 and since that time have increased, until now the rates paid are considerably above those in other occupations, although the actual yearly earnings are low, because of part-time work. From 1920 to the signing of the Jacksonville wage agreement in 1924, about two-thirds of the men were union members and practically all of the nonunion mines were south of the Ohio River; with the fixing of the high wage scale of that agreement, which soon proved to be an uneconomic one, many of the mines found that they could not retain their business, so gradually changed to nonunion. No mystery shrouds the discovery of chromium. The indefatigable French chemist Vauquelin, in reporting his discovery of this chemical element to 1'Institut National in 1798, concluded his discourse with the statement: "I place before the eyes of the Institute a small quantity of chromium and several of its most re- markable combinations." Working with the so-called "red lead of Siberia, Vauquelin not only prepared numerous chemical compounds of the new metal, but he reduced the oxide to the metallic state. These chemical compounds possessed a variety of remarkably distinctive colors; so, acceding to suggestion, Vauquelin named the new element chrome (chromium), a derivative of the Greek word chroma, meaning color. Siberian "red lead" (crocoite) was not plentiful; however, it was not long before Vauquelin's prediction was realized that the chemical compounds of chromium would become useful in the arts when sources of chromium became more readily available. Although chrome-iron ore (chromite) became obtainable in France, the United States and elsewhere during the early part of the nineteenth century, it is interesting to note that from 1828 to about 1860, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and others of the eastern United States furnished almost the entire chrome-ore requirements of the world. THE Workmen's Compensation Act of Ontario was passed in 1915 and Miners' Phthisis was added to the list of compensable industrial diseases in 1916. Under this provision of the Act only about two cases were compensated per year. In 1924, The Department of Public Health made a survey of miners in the four principal camps-Sudbury, Porcupine, Kirkland Lake and Cobalt-and the survey indicated that an alarming proportion of the men exposed to dust had silicosis in one or other of its several stages. A number of conferences were held between representatives of the Department of Mines, the Department of Public Health, the Compensa-tion Board and the mine operators. The operators were advised that in the earliest stages of silicosis there was no physical disability and if men in that stage were removed froni underground there would be little danger of permanent disability. They were further advised that if active steps were taken at once to compensate men that had some real disability and remove from the mines men in the early stages of silicosis, the first cost would be the greatest and thereafter their liability should decrease. As a result of this advice, and having at that time no reason to doubt the findings of the survey, the operators agreed to do all that was asked of them and cooperate with the Government in the steps believed neces-sary to meet the situation, and to provide compensation for the men affected.

It is now generally agreed that most metals have been brought to the surface of the earth by volcanic agencies. The question as to how these metals came from the volcanic matrix to the mineral deposit has been often discussed. It might be useful to give more serious consideration to the ultimate origin of the volcanic material. It is possible that some light might thus be shed on the persistent associations of some metals with certain particular kinds of rocks. For example, the very general association of gold with acid types of igneous rocks, of tin with granites or quartz-felsites, of certain types of deep-seated copper-deposits with magnesian eruptives, and so on. One interesting question is as to whether the metals brought near the surface by volcanic agencies appear here for the first time, or whether they came from the central core of the earth. The interior of the earth is, without doubt, much more highly metallic than the crust, and so the core is often thought to be the origin of many of the metals which are uncovered by man. The Differentiation Theory.—Although a great many theories bearing upon these matters have been discussed,' the only one now considered as worthy of much consideration among American geologists is the " Theory of Differentiation of Igneous Magmas."2 According to this theory, lakes of molten magma are supposed to exist very far down beneath the earth's surface. In these lakes a process of differentiation is supposed to be going on whereby the liquid magma is split up into two or more liquid phases. Each of these phases is supposed to take with it the metallic constituents for which it has the greatest affinity.

In a recent discussion of the mineral resource position of the United States, published in the September 1946 issue of Mining and Metallurgy, I expressed my conviction that ore deposits of major magnitude remain to be found in this country and that they can be found without undue cost or risk. I stated with equally strong conviction, however, that if the search for such deposits is to be notably successful there must be, among other things, a reorientation of philosophy and mental habits on the part of many who would be connected with the search. I would now like to enlarge upon that statement. For such a purpose. we may consider that the search for concealed deposits involves four steps: (I) the selection of areas for further study; (2) the geologic study of those areas in order to verify their general favorableness and in order to choose specific patches worthy of being tested; (3) the decision whether exploration of the patches chosen should actually be undertaken; and (4) the exploration itself. The first two steps and the last rest upon the judgment and skill of geologists. The third step—the decision whether exploration should be undertaken—rests upon management. In my opinion, the philosophies or principles that have guided these steps in the past are now inadequate. Philosophy of Appraisal If concealed deposits are to be looked for, how are the places of their possible concealment to be recognized? Every known mineralized area still in the prospect stage has already been repeatedly examined and condemned. As for those deposits concealed under later rocks, there may be not even the clue of a near-by outcrop for engineer or geologist to consider. flow then, are we to know where to look? Geologic Probability In the early days of our mining industry, ore deposits were found mainly by "following the ore." Later, as such opportunities decreased, and as geologic concepts became accepted, deposits were found more and more through use of the notion of geologic probability. Many instances can be cited wherein a courageous operator ignored the implications of the unsuccessful efforts of predecessors and, solely by "following the ore," converted a discredited prospect into a good mine. Similar experience doubtless will occur in the future, but "following the ore" will no longer in itself find new deposits in the amount needed. Nor can enough new ore be expected from further use of the notion of geologic probability, for, as mentioned above, our known prospects have already been ex-

This paper is abstracted from the report of the Appraisement Committee of the Independent Oil Producers' Agency, of which the writer was Chairman. The other members of the committee were M. V. McQuigg and R. S. Haseltine. To Thomas Cox, engineer in charge of the investigation, and to his efficient staff of assistants, is due the credit for the detail work necessary in carrying out the plan of the Committee. It treats only of the valuation of the lands, wells, and piping, without going into details of equipment and other features. It was recognized, early in the operation, that the value of oil lands was the value of oil to be extracted, and marketed, less the costs attendant thereon. Referring this back to the costs in cents per barrel, it became obvious that surface improvements, absolutely necessary in the production of oil, from wells then drilled; had no separate and independent value aside from the value of the land, but that any excess equipment, not necessary for the production of oil from present wells, such as drilling tools, well casing, etc., should be given a present condition value. In valuing the properties of the Independent Oil Producers' Agency, the Committee has considered the following facts: 1. That from each property there will ultimately be. produced a certain total quantity of oil. 2. That in the production of that oil a certain total quantity of money will be expended. 3. That a certain total amount of money will be received from the oil. 4. That the total net receipts will be the total gross receipts less the cost of development and production. 5. That the present value of the net receipts must be such an amount that when invested by a purchaser it will be returned with 8 per cent. interest additional during the life of the property.

Alterations were performed on a previously developed heap leaching model representing sulfuric acid solution leaching of a malachite sandstone ore. The alterations were made in order to approach a more realistic solution to the leaching equations used in the model and to provide a means of obtaining a constant acid con- centration in the model' s simulated heap effluent solutions. This constant acid concentration is desired if the effluent solutions are to be treated in a solvent extraction-electrowinning plant. An economic study was made showing a use of the leaching model for an imaginary heap leach operation. The example illustrates a method of selecting heap leaching parameters if data are available on mining costs, dump costs, capital cost, etc. This was achieved using an incremental investment technique.

TWENTY-FIVE DOLLARS for nothing at all except a sheepskin. That to me is the effect of the New York State law for registration of engineers and the same may be said of any of the state licensing laws. Of course, if one has to practice in more than one state, he must pay a more or less equal amount for every state he works in; and yet there has been little effective protest against these laws. It would seem that the spirit which animated the Boston Tea Party is non-existent amongst engineers. Undoubtedly a good many consider, through their failure to understand the law, that the matter does not affect them. In New York State it is provided that "any person practicing or offering to practice profes-sional engineering or land surveying . . . shall be licensed as hereinafter provided." To quote further from the law: "A person practices professional engi-neering . . . who holds himself out as able to do, or who does, the work that an engineer does . . . " The cunning of the wording of this article can only be appreciated by considering that anyone calling himself an engineer falls within the definition; its liberal inter-pretation (I have not quoted the whole of it) would embrace many who do not consider themselves engi-neers. The state authorities may not construe it to include such individuals; indeed, they may possibly consider it inexpedient to extend it to include engineers of subordinate grade, but the possibility is always there and, even though an engineer be of the grade of assis-tant, he may at any time be called upon to substitute for his principal in responsible charge of the work. It is therefore clear that anyone calling himself engineer and practicing engineering must, for his own protection, apply for registration or run the risk of violating the law. Now, what is the sense of all this? We have done very well without such restrictions on the means of gaining our livelihood. If one only stops to think, there is hardly a minute of his modern existence when he is not dependent for his safety on the engineering by engineers of yesterday or today. How often is one in jeopardy through failure of engineering works, work done under the supervision of those same engineers? If all of us had to wait for our ends by such means, our average life would probably be some thousands of years. Where, then, is the point to the object declared in all these laws that the need for licensing is "to safeguard life, health and property?" Bosh!

BEFORE direct or wet smelting of copper concentrate was adopted at the McGill smelter, in November 1932, actual furnace smelting tests had indicated the possibility of smelting between 400 and 500 dry tons of wet concentrate per furnace day. Under calcine smelting practice, solid charge up to 1165 tons per furnace day had been smelted. It was realized that in order to smelt wet tonnage in equivalent amount per furnace day, a higher combustion rate and higher temperatures would be neces-sary within the furnace. The reverberatory furnace considered in the following history of wet-smelting de-velopments is a unit 127 ft. long and 28 ft. 8 in. wide, inside dimensions (Fig. r). This furnace was in operation through all the years from 1934 to date. During 1933, the first complete year of direct or wet smelting, the plant was on a curtailed copper-production basis and the available concentrate tonnage to be smelted was limited. The average coal-firing rate in the reverberatory for that year was 124 tons per furnace day. This rate was lower than the average for years immediately preced-ing under calcine smelting practice. With this coal-firing rate, an average of 391 tons of new metal-bearing material (N.M.B.M.) was smelted per furnace day. The following year, 1934, the coal-firing rate was in-creased to 139 tons and the smelting rate increased to 448 tons N.M.B.M. per fur-nace day. In succeeding years production required that either more tonnage be smelted in the one furnace or an additional furnace be placed in operation. With this situation confronting the smelting depart-ment, it was determined to continue the program of increasing the coal-firing rate and also to intensify the temperature in the smelting zone of the furnace. In order to accomplish this, various improvements were made to aid combustion within the furnace. The burners were enlarged, in-creased primary air was supplied to the burners, and changes were made in the furnace to enlarge and streamline the out-let, thus increasing the furnace draft.

Coal refuse slurry impoundments are dams constructed of coarse coal refuse to impound fine refuse (slurry) and water (25 to 30% solids). Both products are waste from coal preparation plants. A number of these structures in West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky were investigated to determine embankment stability. During the investigation a variety of embankment designs were encountered. The investigation determined the soil and geological characteristics of the embankments and the sites. This was accomplished by a test drilling and monitor installation (observation wells and piezometers) program, geologic study, and large-scale mapping which allowed subsurface profiles of the embankments to be constructed. The laboratory testing program concentrated on textural classification of the coal refuse, permeability, and determining strength parameters to be utilized in the stability analyses. For the stability analyses, the modified Fellenius slip circle, simplified Bishop slip circle, and analysis for translational failure were utilized. In all stability analyses hydrostatic pressure and seismic acceleration probability were considered. This investigation indicated that 62% of the embankments analyzed were in a stable condition. The coal seam, the type of roof rock, and the gradation of the refuse influence the degree of compaction obtainable and the permeability of refuse. The shear strength of coal refuse appears to be controlled by its composition, moisture content, degree of compaction, amount and grain size of fines present. This investigation demonstrated these embankments should not be treated as pure state-of-the-art dams consideration must be given to the particular properties of coal refuse and the total refuse disposal system. Refuse dam slurry impoundments generally lack the site selection phase that is standard practice with siting most other types of dams.

Longhole underground drilling has been carried on in the Tri-State area at various times over the past 35 years or more. W. F. Netzeband reported on this topic in 1926 and in 1930. More recently it has been found that in certain areas of the Picher field, Oklahoma, and under certain conditions, the jackleg or jumbo-mounted drifters can be used more economically and to greater advantage than surface churn drillholes for prospecting. To understand better the problems involved in Eagle-Picher's longhole prospecting program it would be helpful to cover the geologic criteria affecting it. Much has been written about the geology of the Picher field. A more complete description than that given here can be found in a recent paper by J. P. Lyden.
