The liquid surface tension of copper-nickel ad copper-nickel-titanium-carbon alloys and the wettability of titanium caybyde by these alloys have been measuhed. It was found that the surface tensions of the binary copper-nickel alloys Lie on a smooth curve between the end members, copper and nickel. The addition of small amounts of titanium and carbon has nO effect on the surface tensions of copper-nickel alloys. Small additions of nickel to copper significantly reduce the contact angle of Ike alloy with titanium carbide. From a Gibbs treatment, nickel is shown to be adsorbed at the titanium carbide-alloy interface. X HE microstructure of two-phase materials has been shown to be influenced largely by the interfacial energies between the phases present.' , In systems prepared by powder metallurgy techniques and densi-fied in the presence of liquid phase, a precise analysis of microstructure and interfacial energy relationships requires a knowledge of the solid-solid interface energies and liquid-solid interface energies. However, marly metal-nonmetal systems are characterized by the "sweating" of the liquid during sintering, and in these systems wettability is a principal consideration. The wetting in turn is dictated by the various interface energies of the system, as shown in Fig. 1 for a liquid drop formed on a solid substrate. The equation which expresses the vectorial balance of surface forces in the horizontal plane, at the point of contact, A, is given by: where ssv = solid-vapor interface energy sSL = solid-liquid interface energy sLV= liquid-vapor interface energy 6 = contact angle measured through the liquid phase. The angle and the surface tension, slv, can be measured accurately by the sessile drop method.3, The absolute value of the surface energy of the solid cannot be determined by this method, but with reasonable changes in the composition of the liquid only, the value of ssv can be considered constant. The changes in contact angle, then, can be attributed to changes in sSL and sLV and since sLV can be measured, the changes in sSL can be determined. Several studies have indicated that the surface and bulk properties of solid alloys can be correlated with electronic structure. The catalytic activity of copper-nickel alloys was reported to follow the dband vacancies in these alloys.5 Nickel has been considered to have 0.6 holes per atom in the d-band. The addition of copper to nickel is thought to bring about a filling of the d-band of nickel, since each copper atom contributes one electron. Thus, at an atomic concentration of 60 Cu-40 Ni (62 wt pct Cu-38 wt pct Ni) the d-band is believed to be full, and magnetic measurements support this view.6 If the electronic structure is influencing a property of the alloy, this property should show some sort of discontinuity as the composition changes from one side of the 60 Cu-40 Ni composition to the other. Since the catalytic activity can be considered as a surface property of the alloy, it is logical to assume that other surface properties, such as surface tension, may also be influenced by electronic structure. The suggestion has been made that there is a correlation between the solid titanium carbide-liquid Cu-Ni alloy interfacial energy and d-band filling.7 One purpose of this investigation was to determine if the changes taking place in the electronic structure with compositional changes in the solid copper-nickel alloys were reflected in the surface tension values of the liquid alloys. Such a change, if present, would lend support to the suggestion that one can refer to discrete energy bands in the liquid state. Other purposes of the present study were to investigate in detail the wettability in the system copper-nickel-titanium carbide, and to discuss the possible processes which take place during wetting in this system.

TANTALUM and columbium are newcomers in the world of metals. Many of the metals described in this volume had been known and used for centuries before either tantalum or columbium was known to exist. The scarcity of the ores and the comparative difficulty of extraction delayed their technology until specialized methods of processing could be developed. HISTORY Early in the nineteenth century, 1801, Hatchett discovered a new oxide, which he called columbium oxide, and a year later, Ekeberg announced that he had found a new element, which he named tantalum. The preparation of the metal tantalum in impure form was first announced by Berzelius in 1824, but the actual production of ductile metal did not occur until 1903, when von Bolton, of Siemens and Halske, developed a process for the production of tantalum pure enough to be drawn into electric-lamp filament wire. The use of tantalum as a filament wire began to decline when ductile tungsten was introduced in 1909. In 1921, C. W. sake, of Fansteel Metallurgical Corporation, produced the first ingot of tantalum metal in America. The first ingot of columbium was produced in 1927 in the laboratory of the same company. Coal is a term applied to vegetable matter (trees, grasses, etc.) which was subjected to heat and pressure through geologic ages. This resulted in a change in both the physical and chemical properties. Because its chemical composition is variable, geologists classify coal as a heterogeneous mineral rather than a homogeneous mineral. Peat represents the initial, unconsolidated stage in the development of coal. This coalification continues with time and the application of temperature and pressure to lignite, subbituminous, bituminous, and anthracite toward the theoretical graphite end member. PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF COAL The physical properties are concerned with the characteristics of coal in its natural state, or prior to its end use as a fuel. For example, the hardness and grindability of coal determine the maintenance cost for coal mining, handling, and pulverizing equipment; the specific gravity of coal and its associated minerals determines the coal preparation technique used in a cleaning plant as well as the capacity of coal bins, boats and size of cargo, and other coal storage facilities. The physical properties are, of course, dependent on the chemical constituents of coal, and all properties are interrelated. Specific Gravity The specific gravity (sp gr) of a solid is the ratio of the weight of a cubic foot of the solid to the weight of a cubic foot of water. The specific gravity of pure coal has been reported to range between 1.23 to 1.72 and increases with the change in rank from lignite to anthracite. This means that it is 1.23 to 1.72 times heavier than water.

Emphasis is placed on characterizing the effects of dispersion in laboratory tests using engineering models which provide information useful for the improvement and control of existing plant operations. Although published data on the physical properties of rock are voluminous, information is often lacking on the environmental conditions under which such data were acquired. Efforts are frequently directed to improve specimen tolerances and preparation procedures; but investigators often overlook giving the rock environment equally careful control during the testing program. Generally, tests are conducted at existing laboratory room conditions, and the prepared rock specimens are frequently, if not most commonly, air-dried for various lengths of time before testing. The standard testing atmosphere recommended by the American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM)1 is 73.4°F and 50% relative humidity. To maintain a rock at 50% relative humidity for testing purposes, however, requires special equipment and preconditioning procedures, as this study demonstrates. Relatively small variations in the moisture content of a specimen, for example, due to the coolants or lubricants used during specimen preparation, can cause significant variations in the physical properties measured. Such moisture variations may occur in the rock specimen even after it is air-dried, since laboratory humidity conditions commonly fluctuate from day to day. For these reasons, this study emphasizes procedures for preconditioning and maintaining a controlled environment during testing. Although the effects of moisture or temperature on rock properties have previously been studied, their combined effect on rock properties is unknown. In this study, uniaxial compressive strength, Young's and stiffness moduli, and longitudinal wave velocity were determined and compared under controlled conditions of temperature, moisture, and pressure for 11 environments considered to be of particular interest in laboratory, in-situ, and even simulated lunar environments. Large degrees of undercooling have been produced in bulk samples, 400 g, of copper and Cu-O alloys by melting in a slag of commercial soda-lime glass. The maximum degrees of undercooling obtained for copper, hypoeutectic and hypereutectic Cu-O alloy samples were 208°, 218°, and 97°C, respectively. No grain refinement as a function of undercooling was observed for the pure copper samples although in Cu-O alloys there was a marked decrease in grain size at degrees of undercooling greater than 150°C. The grain size change is the result of recrystallization during or immediately following the freezing process. THE first report of a large degree of undercooling in a bulk sample of metal was that by Bardenheuer and Bleckmann1 who produced 258°C undercooling in a 150-g sample of iron by melting in a glass slag. Garbeck2 extended this technique to nickel, cobalt, and copper and reported maximum undercoolings of 220°, 230°, and 60°C, respectively, while Fehling and schei13 undercooled a large number of metals as 2 to 20-g samples slagged in glass. Subsequently, one of the authors4 applied the glass slag technique to bulk samples, -500 g, of silver and obtained a maximum undercooling of 250°C. It was concluded that impurities which normally catalyze nucleation at small degrees of undercooling could be removed by oxidation and solution in a glass slag. Large undercooling of bulk samples of iron, nickel, cobalt, and their alloys has also been reported by other authors.8'10'11 Of the five metals mentioned above, copper was the only one which had not been undercooled by at least 200°C in the form of a large bulk sample. Since copper exhibits high liquid solubility for oxygen, as do iron, nickel, cobalt, and silver, it was considered that a much larger degree of undercooling than that observed by Garbeck for copper should be possible. This was obtained by modification of the technique applied previously to silver and the results of undercooling experiments with 400-g samples of copper form part of this paper. The undercooling behavior of Cu-O alloys was also studied, and the influence of a small oxygen content on the grain structure of undercooled copper was observed metallographically. 1) EXPERIMENTAL The copper was obtained as oxygen-free high-conductivity copper, the major impurities of which were Fe 0.01 pct, Zn 0.015 pct, and Si 0.02 pct. Melting was carried out in an open-ended vertical cylindrical fur- nace wound with Kanthal wire. A schematic diagram of the experimental setup is shown in Fig. 1. The undercooling technique previously used for silver4 involved preoxidation of the samples by melting the silver in contact with the atmosphere. The oxygen content was subsequently reduced by freezing the samples under a glass slag, whereby the oxygen was evolved as gas and the continuous glass cover over the surface prevented re-solution of oxygen when the sample was remelted. Since oxygen is not released as gas when a Cu-O alloy is frozen. the technique had to be modified for use with copper. Also, copper is oxidized during fire refining so that an in situ preoxidation treatment of the samples was not considered to be a prerequisite to large undercooling. Experimentation proved that this supposition was correct. Instead, it was found that care was necessary during melting of the copper under glass to minimize oxygen pickup. Samples of copper weighing 400 g were prepared by adding 50-g pieces of copper to a vitreous silica crucible partly filled with soda lime glass at a temperature of approximately 1000°C. Each piece was quickly immersed in the glass slag and held at this temperature until the oxide coating on the surface decomposed. This change was easily observed and coincided with the formation of gas bubbles in the glass

Jet impingement produces two mechanisms to clean the bottom of a borehole during jet-bit drilling operations. One is an impact-pressure wave in the immediate area of jet impingement. The other is crossflow, which spreads across the bottom away from the pressure wave. Measurements of the vertical distribution of the cross-flow at several positions beneath a 4 3/4-in. tricone jet bit in a laboratory model show that the maximum velocity in the crossflow is directly proportional to the square root of the product of the rate of flow and the velocity of the jets through the nozzles (QV). Other measurements in the laboratory model show that gradients in the impact-pressure wave are directly proportional to the jet QV if the diameters of the nozzles are held constant. Consistency of the basic relationships through changes in the Reynolds numbers of the jets from 31,000 to 93,000 suggests that the laboratory results should be representative of typical flow in field operations having higher Reynolds numbers. Estimates of the impact-pressure waves under conditions other than those in the jet-bit model may be made by comparison with a less complex model—impingement of a jet against an unrestricted flat surface normal to the jet. Equations derived from current jet technology describe the wave in this simple system for a wide range of conditions. INTRODUCTION The efficiency of rotary drilling operations is strongly linked to the efficiency with which cuttings are removed. Cuttings remaining on the bottom of the borehole will impede further penetration by the bit until they are removed. Wasteful regrinding is prevented if the fluid circulated past the bit removes cuttings as rapidly as they are made. Most investigations of bottom-hole cleaning under bits have been concerned with the rate-of-penetration effects of bit type, nozzle configuration, fluid properties, pressure gradients and utilization of hydraulic horsepower. These investigations have shown that drilling muds, weighted to keep the pressure in the borehole greater than in adjacent formations and carrying material which forms a filter cake, apparently plaster cuttings against the bottom, making them difficult to remove. In addition to a demonstration of the factors causing poor cleaning, the most significant result of these previous investigations has been the increased use of jet bits accompanied by better hydraulic programs and better selection of drilling fluids. Undoubtedly, these practices have improved bottom-hole cleaning, but rates of penetration when drilling with muds are still often lower than would be expected with perfect cleaning." Although there is general agreement with the concept that increasing hydraulic energy at a jet bit often increases the rate of penetration by improving cleaning, research workers have differed as to the best criterion for evalyating hydraulics. Some lean toward maximizing the product of the rate of flow and the velocity through the nozzles (QV) others prefer to maximize the hydraulic horsepower at the bit;'"-' "till another says that neither criterion is universally suitable."' This controversy shows that conclusive field evidence has not established the superiority of either of these criteria. Analysis of the fluid flow which cleans the bottom should contribute to resolving the controversy. Impinging jets clean the bottom by creating two mechanisms capable of dislodging cuttings. One is the impact from the momentum of the jet and the other is the flaw parallel to the bottom away from the area of impingement. The impact force appears in the form of a pressure wave on the bottom and, in this paper, is called the impact-pressure wave. The flow parallel to the bottom is called crossflow. Fig. 1 illustrates these two mechanisms. This paper describes crossflow and the impact-pressure wave beneath jet bits and relates them to controllable parameters. Through these relations, criteria for use in designing hydraulics to achieve maximum use of the mechanisms of cleaning are derived. PROPERTIES OF CROSSFLOW CONCEPTS DEVELOPED IN PREVIOUS INVESTIGATIONS Concepts of scavenging the bottom by crossflow have been well discussed by Bobo, et al." They examine the means by which crossflow may create forces on cuttings and conclude that the cleaning action of crossflow can be increased by increasing the velocity of the flow stream close to the bottom. A comprehensive analysis of the crystallographic and metallographic structure of several Al-CuAl, lamellar eutectic grains solidified under equilibrium conditions has been performed. A consistent pattern was discovered which was interpreted in terms of a detailed atomistic model of an interface describable as: Interface II {111} AL 11 {211} <101>Al <120> ? Several arguments are presented to substantiate the theory. It is compared in detail with another interface model characteristic of the Wid-manstatten precipitate of CuAl2 in A1 at low Cu levels. In addition, a concept is proposed to help explain the structure of the compound CuAl2. It has been shown that the eutectic alloy between A1 and CuA1, can be forced to solidify as substantially parallel lamellae throughout a relatively large volume&apos; by appropriately controlling the solidification parameters of growth rate, thermal gradients, and impurity level and by causing solidification to proceed in a unidirectional fashion from one end of an ingot to the other. A typical ingot solidified in this manner shows three distinct zones along the length of the ingot, Fig. 1. At the head end is a region consisting of many different grains, some of which are elongated slightly in the direction of solidification. After a few centimeters of growth, this polygrained region gradually merges into the second zone which consists of a very few elongated coarse grains. The third zone at the tail end is a region of eutectic colonies caused by segregation of impurities. Microscopic examination of transverse and longitudinal sections of the ingots reveals that during the initial stages of growth (zone I) the lamellar structure is frequently highly distorted and twisted but that it straightens out in zone 11. This characteristic pattern suggests that nucleation of a eutectic grain begins randomly at the head end of the ingot, and that some particular orientation relationship between the phases is more favorable from an energy consideration than others for one reason or another, so that some grains grow and others which are less favorably oriented do not. The favorably oriented or "low energy" grains continue to grow until excess solute rejected at the advancing liquid-solid interface destroys the parallel lamellar structure by forming a cellular rather than a substantially planar interface. When this occurs, the parallel lamellae fan out and eutectic colonies are formed because the lamellae grow perpendicular to the local interface. Questions naturally arise as to the crystallographic nature of the "low energy" grains. What do the grains which persist into zone II have in common? Can this explain the stability of such grains during growth? To answer the first question it is necessary to determine the crystallographic orientation of the lamellae of each phase relative to one another. This has been done for Al-CuAl2 eutectic alloys by two different techniques on specimens prepared in different ways.2&apos;3 The results were different from each other and from a third orientation relationship between A1 and CuA1, reported for overaged A1-Cu alloys.4 The three orientation relationships are summarized below to illustrate their similarities and their differences. Lewis, on behalf of the local committee of arrangements, made a short address of greeting to the members assembled, and then introduced Gov. A. H. Holley, of Lakeville, Conn. Gov. Holley addressed the Institute as follows : Gentlemen, we give you cordial welcome to a mining, manufacturing, and agricultural country, of which we are not a little proud. We welcome you as an association, and as individuals. We invite you to an inspection of our resources, and to our methods of improving them. We appreciate the results of your efforts in past years, and we anticipate good from your advice and counsel in the future. You are in the vicinity of some of the oldest mining and manufacturing operations in iron in our country. It will be our pleasure to conduct you to a mine which was worked for more than a half century before our country achieved national independence, and to point out to you the spot where the products of this mine were wrought into cannon and shot during the progress of our Revolution. We can show you also a far larger area of mining country than was supposed to exist in this vicinity at that early day. There are, within a radius of thirty miles from this spot, ten mines at least that have been extensively worked, and there are as many more that have been occasionally worked, with a fair degree of success. All the mines that are wrought to any extent produce excellent qualities of iron, while many of them in various combinations produce as good material for the manufacture of steel, car wheels, axles, and many other purposes, as can be found in any country. The old Salisbury iron retains its reputation for tensile strength unsurpassed, when made entirely from the ore of the old mine. The progress that has been made in the development of these mines since the days of the pickaxe, when the product was transported in pounds upon horseback, to those of the steam-engine, which now moves hundreds of tons per day, presents, indeed, a

INTRODUCTION In 1975 278x10 3 tonnes of zinc was consumed in the United Kingdom, of which 69.3x10 3 tonnes was obtained from secondary sources. Of this secondary zinc 37.7x10 3 tonnes was used in brass making, the remainder was used in non metallic applications - eg oxides and salts. Many forms of zinc-bearing wastes arise, for example as galvaniser&apos;s drosses and residues, fumes from ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgical processes, and filter cakes from rayon manufacture and metal finishing. In the case of zinc-bearing dusts and fumes, the quantities available for recycle are at present restricted by the failure to collect them efficiently, hut environmental factors are leading to improvements in gas cleaning, with the result that quantities collected will increase and then exceed those required for the production of chemicals, so that some dusts may either have to be dumped or processed to metal. The recovery of zinc from steelmaking dusts is practised in W. Germany (1) and Japan (2) employing processes based on reduction in rotary kilns in order to produce sponge iron and a zinc- rich oxide suitable for feeding to the zinc-lead blast furnace. Although the zinc-lead blast furnace is the only zinc-making process used in the UK, no similar treatment of steelmaking dusts is carried out, a pilot scheme was tested by the British Steel Corporation, but development was abandoned for economic reasons. It appears to be cheaper to pelletise suitable dusts and export them for treatment elsewhere.

THE use of oxygen in electric furnaces is relatively old, and the practice has been employed by several steelmakers prior to the recent impetus given generally to the use of oxygen in steelmaking. This application has been described recently in several publications,1 and a number of patents relating to the application of oxygen in electric furnaces have been issued.2 An effort is made in this paper to assemble recent information relating to the use of oxygen in electric furnaces and to present this material from a practical viewpoint, to an extent consistent with the withholding of certain operating data which manufacturers consider to be confidential. The use of oxygen has been extended during the past months in a number of additional steel companies by incorporating oxygen practice into regular production and by much increased experimentation. Available records show that oxygen is used more or less regularly at present in 18 shops, of which six utilize the oxygen for production and the others for experimen¬tation. The number of furnaces per shop using oxygen varies from one to six. Many types of electric-furnace steel have been prepared with the assistance of pure oxygen, including low-carbon and medium-carbon killed steels, low-carbon rimming steel and low-carbon and medium-carbon stainless and alloy steels. Oxygen has been used in furnaces of all sizes up to 90 tons capacity for accelerating charge meltdown and for reduction of carbon.

The phase equilibria of the Hg-Th system over the composition range 0-100 pct Th and temperatures up to 1000°C have been studied for a small-volume, closed system. The solubility of Th in liquid Hg is about 5 pct at 300°C and decreases sharply with decreasing temperature. Two intermediate phases occur, Hg3 Th and HgTh. The structures of these are hexagonal (nonideally close-packed) and face-centered cubic, respectively. The HgTh phase decomposes eutectoidally at 400°-500°C. The solubility of Hg in solid thorium seems to be negligible. AFULL-phase diagram for this system would have to be defined on temperature-composition-pressure co-ordinates. This paper describes the pseudo phase diagram of a closed system, that is, where the alloy enclosed in a small volume equilibrates with a vapor pressure of mercury dictated by composition and temperature. Because of the experimental difficulties in studying a system of this nature, many of the phase relations can only be sketched. Alloy Preparation Alloys over the full range of composition were made from triple distilled mercury and one of two grades of thorium. For the bulk of the work, a calcium-reduced metal in sintered pellet form of reported 99+ pct total thorium content was used. Arc-melted specimens of this thorium gave a hardness of 135 VPN. The microstructure showed small primary dendrites of ThO2. A number of alloy compositions were made with a high-purity, iodide-decomposition thorium metal. The are-melted hardness of a button of this material was 35 VPN. Although the microstructure of the arc-melted specimens showed no dendrites of ThO2, there was definite evidence of an unidentified phase enveloping the grain bound-aries. There were no distinguishable differences between the constitution of alloys made with the two grades of thorium metal. Under normal conditions thorium is not wetted by liquid mercury. The film of ThO2 on all thorium metal cannot be penetrated by either liquid or vaporous mercury. It was therefore necessary to comminute thorium in the presence of mercury under such conditions that oxide films could not reform on the newly exposed metal surfaces. This was accomplished by the use of a high-speed, carbide-tipped rotary cutter incorporated in a chamber purged with argon and connected at the bottom to a demountable Vycor bulb containing a weighed amount of mercury. This experimental device is fully described in a separate paper.1 Alloy compositions were calculated by weighing the empty bulb, the bulb containing the mercury, and the bulb containing the mercury and the thorium chips. Many alloys were analyzed chemically for thorium and/or mercury after subsequent homogenization; the agreement between analyzed and calculated compositions was invariably very close. Bulbs containing the requisite amounts of mercury and fine thorium chips were clamped off, removed to a sealing unit, evacuated and sealed. Amalgamation under these conditions proceeded rapidly even at room temperature. To insure homogeneity, the specimens were annealed to 300-400°C. Alloys containing less than 30 pct Th remained pasty after all treatments, indicating an equilibrium condition of liquid plus solid. Alloys with more than 30 pct Th were transformed into a dark powdery product. These latter specimens were annealed for times of up to 1 week to complete interdiffusion. Many of the alloy compositions are pyrophoric. On exposure to air they oxidize with considerable evolution of heat to a mixture of ThO2 and free mercury. It was mandatory that alloy specimens be handled in a "dry box" purged thoroughly with argon. All X-ray diffraction specimens were powdered, screened, and sealed in capillary tubes within the dry box. Experimental Procedures Thermal analysis experiments, useful only in the mercury-rich region of the system, were conducted with the alloys in their original containers. A reentrant thermocouple well formed an integral part of the bulb. These bulbs were heated in a silicone oil bath and cooled in a dry ice-acetone mixture. The rates of heating and cooling were slowed by immersing the specimen bulb in a larger tube containing silicone oil. This provided a suitable thermal lag. In all tests, pure mercury was run as a basic standard. While the invariant reaction at about the melting point of mercury was detected by thermal analysis, the heat effect at the liquidus was not sufficient to produce an inflection in the cooling curve. It was necessary to determine the liquidus temperatures at the mercury-rich end of the system by "breaks" in electrical reslstivity versus temperature curves for individual alloys. Before covering the separate methods used in mining geophysics, it may be well to mention some current basic geophysical prospecting concepts. As in most fields, a better understanding and means of studying these fundamentals usually provides the more common improvements, rather than new principles being discovered. The relative detail and complexity of most mining geology often results in the use of geophysics in problems it cannot solve. On the other hand, suitable applications are often ignored or left unrecognized. To minimize this, it is important to consider geophysics as a phase, or additional tool, in geological or exploration engineering.

The mineral industry of today is faced with a number of dilemmas, not the least of which grows out of the series of related facts-world mineral consumption is growing, and is expected to continue to grow; maintaining adequate capacity to meet needs will require very great capital investment over the next decades, investment which must be measured in billions of dollars; much of the new production must come from remote and relatively underdeveloped countries; many of the areas in which such development must take place are not areas in which private capital enters without some trepidation. There are real problems in financing new mineral development-problems which have occupied the thoughts of many in the industry. One group which is currently providing part of the answer, and perhaps pointing the way to further progress in the future, is the World Bank. Loans from the World Bank are arranged usually for countries which are attempting to develop their economies through expanded industrial production. More often than not they are for the development of electric power projects or transportation facilities. Although we consider the mineral industries to be basic factors in industrial development and very important factors in the early stages of development of a country, few of these loans are for mineral development-no more than a half dozen out of a total of well over 300 loans which have been granted to date. Yet the World Bank has played a far more important part in world mineral development than these figures would indicate. The few loans for mineral development which it has made are important, but of considerably greater importance are the secondary effects of many of the non-mineral development loans and some of the special services which the Bank also offers.

RegaRding the elements necessarily involved .in working out a scientific scheme of classification, Stansfield and Sutherland, (94)† quoting Grout, (34) make the following statement: All bases (for a scientific classification) should be capable of quantitative determination, or be exactly related to some property capable of such a test, so that, if no natural groups are found, arbitrary lines may be drawn to limit the classes. The best basis for classification should involve inherent and fundamental qualities of the materials considered. Allied to this is the requirement that advantage should be taken of any natural grouping. As a further help in selection, the bases or tests should be easily applied, widely known, and have a wide range of values in the material classified. In order that we may apply the philosophy thus expressed, it is necessary for us to have clearly in mind both the reasons why coals differ and the specific purposes to be served by the classification to be devised. Coals differ because, as modern science has shown, coal beds are actually neither more nor less than buried and altered peat deposits, formed in remote geologic time. And as is generally known, such peat beds consisted of masses of partly macerated and decayed trees, shrubs, plants, mosses and/or algae, deposited under swamp or semiswamp conditions. It is therefore to be expected that coals will vary: 1. Because of differences in the parent vegetation, due either to evolutionary plant changes, as from the fernlike types of the Paleozoic to the coniferous and hardwood types of the late Mesozoic and Tertiary; or due to the differences in floral assemblages (growing at the same time) induced by differences in local environmental conditions. For example, moss, sedge, woody and other peats are today accumulating simultaneously in different bogs in North America. 2.
