Mr. Caine, members and friends of the AIME Electric Furnace Conference, as Chairman of the Executive Committee it is my pleasure to welcome you to this our fifth annual conference. I can assure you that the conference chairman and his committee have prepared a program of unusual and timely interest. Mr. Caine has spoken of the educational session. This part of our program was of unusual interest last year and I am sure that the subject of this year's discussion will prove to be just as interesting. The wide variety of subjects cover both the basic and the acid electric furnace and are in keeping with the usual high quality maintained on our programs in past years. As the papers and discussions will be published in the PROCEEDINS, you will in a short time be able to add another volume to the present series.

The volumes of Transactions, which are published annually, contain the list of officers, rules, etc., the Proceedings, and the papers revised for final publication. (In this revision, after the preliminary publication, authors are permitted to use the largest liberty; and the changes and additions made in papers are sometimes important. It should be borne in mind by those who study or quote a paper in the preliminary edition, that they may not have in that form the ultimate and deliberate expression of the author's views. All manuscripts intended for presentation at the February meeting of the Institute must be in the hands of the Secretary of the Institute not later than Monday, Nov. 23, 1914. This is the date at which the manuscript must be in the hands of the Secretary, and is not the mailing date upon which it leaves the author's hands. In case manuscripts are sent to members of Technical Committees, they must be in the hands of the Technical Committee a sufficient time in advance of Nov. 23 so that they may be in the hands of the Secretary on the date indicated.

M. A. Hanna is investigating a nickel prospect near Riddle, Ore. Drilling is under way and a prospect shaft is being put down to obtain samples for metallurgical test work. The deposit is favorably situated for open pit mining. The property had been drilled previously by the USGS and by Freeport Sulphur Co. A $75,000 laboratory pilot plant will begin operations this year to determine if economic beneficiation of a deposit of low grade iron ore, being examined by M. A. Hanna in the Iron River, Mich., district, is possible. Three miles east of Randville 2560 acres of land have been acquired, and drilled, over the last 2 years. The ore is reported to be 34 pat Fe.

Quietly picking his way through the thorny thicket of conservation issues is William E. Ruckelshaus, director of the Environmental Protection Agency in which President Nixon gathered the various anti- pollution units from the Interior, Commerce. Agriculture and Health. Education and Welfare departments. Mr. Ruckelshaus. EPA's first administrator, moved over from being Assistant Attorney General in charge of the civil division at Justice to this new post. Essentially, EPA is charged with administering swiftly proliferating antipollution programs. This means policing industry cities, farms and everything else. Ruckelshaus has been quietly fitting together the various pieces of this new agency, pulling then1 out of other Federal departments. Some 5800 employees are involved. The budget in 1971 for these segments will total about $1.5 billion.

SURFACE effects in the brittle fracture of materials such as glass and in the plastic slip of zinc and cadmium crystals are well known.' Recently, another surface effect has been found for zinc monocrystals. It has been observed that certain normally ductile zinc monocrystals become ex- tremely brittle when their surface is coated with a layer of oxide or copper plate.

The kinetic ball mill model accurately simulated two industrial mills over their entire operating range. This was confirmed using 100 sets of grinding circuit data. Contrary to initial expectations, the absolute grinding rate function was not correlated to the mill feedrate, feed size distribution or pulp density. Instead, a single rate function provided excellent simulation over the entire operating range. Statistical analysis showed that the model explained all significant variation in measured product size distributions.

There's a right way and a wrong way to store diesel electric systems and similar equipment for generating on-site power, according to James Frankow, service manager for Allis-Chalmers Corp's Engine Division. In any event, the less storage the better. Many generating sets are stored before installation, especially when new construction is underway. Improper storage, or mothballing, can create initial reliability problems. Therefore; arrange for inside storage with no drastic extremes in temperature or humidity. If engines and alternators are stored in areas other than inside a dirt-free and temperature-controlled building, the unit or engine should be completely covered and protected against the environment. Before covering it with a canvas or with plastic, the unit should first be sealed at the following critical engine openings:

The fall meeting of the. Institute of Metals Division will be held in Philadelphia on Sept. 30 to Oct. 2. All meetings will be held in the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, Broad and Walnut Streets, which is also the hotel headquarters. As this meeting is being held in conjunction with the meeting of the American Foundrymen's Association, the members of the Institute will have the privileges of the exhibit of the Foundrymen's Association. This, it is expected, will be one of the largest exhibits made in this country. On Monday evening, Sept. 29, there will be a meeting, in the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, of former officers and members of the Executive Committee of the Institute. It is requested that all officers and Committee members, the present as well as the past, will arrange to be present.

A rapid in situ stress measurement technique was developed for exposed underground surfaces. The method applies radial stress in small diameter (38mm) boreholes, initiating fracture propagation which is monitored by measuring ultrasonic pulse velocity. Theoretical relations for stress concentrations near boreholes provide independent expressions for unknown principal field stresses at incipient fracture; fracture orientation defines principal stress orientation. Accuracy and precision were evaluated using blocks of brittle material subjected to known stresses. Results were comparable to those obtained by other in situ stress measurement techniques.

THE investigation outlined in this paper was carried on at the plant of the Sawbrook Steel Castings Co., Lockland, Ohio. EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE In the study of the effect of temperature, heats were made with the Sawbrook company's standard practice, using multiple slags, the only difference' being that the heats were tapped at two temperatures; one group between 2960° and 3040°F and the other group between 3200° and 3250°F. Slags were weighed throughout the heat at each slag change and after the heat was poured. Only the significant slag weights, those of the total slag and the finishing slag, have been reported.

A recent paper by Adams and vreeland30 describes dislocation density changes in zinc as a function of shear strain. The dislocation density was determined with the aid of an etching technique previously described by Brandt, Adams, and Vreeland.31 However, comparison of dislocation densities obtained by electron microscopy and this etching technique are not in good agreement, as will be shown below. The computer-aided simulation model re¬ported here is an extension of the one developed by the author while at The Pennsylvania State University. The present model, however, includes consideration of the deformability and secondary fracturing of the porous system. The modifications enable simulation of multiphase shallow unsaturated-saturated and/or artesian ground water systems in dynamic mining environments. The model has been validated, verified, and evaluated on a number of field case studies and the results have been excellent.
