The following quotation is from "Guidelines for evaluation of undergraduate curricula in geological engineering, mineral processing, and mining engineering" prepared by the Committee on Education of SME of AIME. "The objectives of the Engineers' Council for Professional Development (ECPD), as delineated in its constitution, are: (a) To promote and advance all phases of engineering education with a view to the promotion of the public welfare through the development of the better educated engineer and engineering technician." (Italics added.) The problem is that no one has as yet seriously developed a method of supplying engineering technicians. There were great hopes that the expansion of junior colleges would help satisfy this need. Sadly, they have not; and it appears they are unwilling or unable to supply the need for mineral engineering technologists. Apparently, the junior colleges cannot afford staff for such courses, even when the colleges are located in mining districts.

The years immediately ahead-1961, 1962, 1963- will be critical years from every standpoint for the young engineer. In the next few years, he must learn to grow professionally. Most often, the rate and extent of this growth will be governed by his own initiative and perseverance. Habits and attitudes acquired during these early professional years relate very closely to, and even foreshadow, future accomplishments. The future goal of the young engineer is a moving target. It will change with professional growth, family requirements, changes in predominant interest, general economic and business conditions and geographic location. However ambitious and stead-fast in his goal he may be, the young engineer should not hesitate to adjust or change-for he really does not know initially what he is best fitted for and will not know until he has tried a number of things patiently and persistently.

ARSENIC and orpiment are two mineral substances of a similar kind, and they are by nature pure, without admixture of other species. In regard to their apparent qualities we shall say that their composition is scorched, well-purified earth; and because of a certain subtlety and easy digestion they penetrate very easily into fused metals, indeed they act in such a way that they corrupt and convert almost into another nature any metal with which they find themselves. Orpiment and arsenic act in almost the same way as do tin and mercury. With these the fraudulent alchemists blanch copper, brass, and even lead to the whiteness of silver. According to the physicians they are in fourth part hot and dry. They are also corrosive because of certain powers; indeed, they are a most powerful poison to the life of all things. Engineering education for the mining industry has been undergoing a gradual change in recent years, to an extent that many employers may not realize. The result of this change is that the new graduate comes to his first employment with very little knowledge that is immediately valuable in operations. He is in fact, simply "half-baked" and needs much education on the job before his schooling will pay out in any significant way. To the employer who fails to recognize this, and fails to give the necessary training to finish the educational job, the modern graduate is likely to be unsatisfying. Moreover, the young fellow's future competence will be impaired. However, to the employer who assumes the educational burden, the effort should pay out as the half-baked products, after a few years, ought to be more useful than their predecessors and should have a greater potential to solve problems or cope with change. The reasons for this development are given below in the foreword to a questionnaire survey circulated by the SME Committee for On-the-Job Training.

(communication to the Secretary *).-It has long been known that sulphur and oxygen react upon crude oils, removing hydrogen and thereby creating unsaturated hydrocarbons which unite with each other, producing heavier forms. Dr. Rogers now finds that the percentage of sulphur in the oils of several fields in California is roughly proportional to the specific gravity of the oil. This additional proof is most welcome. It is rather surprising, , in that the impression had prevailed that practically all the reacting sulphur escaped from the oil as hydrogen sulphide, and did not remain in combination with the oil. It would be interesting to know what part of the sulphur-plotted by Dr. Rogers is in solution as free sulphur and hydrogen sulphide, and what part is, in more complex compounds, such as thiophanes, etc.

THOMPSON1 proposed a very convenient nomenclature in which an imaginary regular tetrahedron was used to facilitate the analysis of dislocation interactions in fcc materials. The faces of the tetrahedron were constructed parallel to four different sets of (111) planes, and the six edges of the tetrahedron then represented the six 1/2 [110] Burgers vectors. The lines which joined the midpoint of a tetrahedron face with the ends of one of its edges represented the Burgers vectors of the partial dislocations into which the six 1/2 [I101 Burgers vectors dissociate. Using Frank&apos;s2 notation, all of the dislocations and their partial dislocations were identified and numerous possible interactions were postulated. The case of hexagonal crystals is unfortunately more complex, but it appears convenient to introduce a system similar to that of Thompson1 to describe the various slip planes and Burgers vectors encountered in cph structures. Mining practice and underground studies show that, besides mining stresses, lateral tectonic stress also influences roadway stability. Roadways perpendicular to the direction of major lateral stress experience the majority of roof falls, accelerated floor heave, and extrusion of coal ribs into openings. They have the most severe deformations and their maintenance is difficult. Roadways parallel to the major lateral stress exhibit roof sagging and bed separation, moderate though sometimes uneven floor heave, and slabbing of coal ribs into openings. Roadways oblique to lateral stress have, to a certain degree, self-supporting roofs, uniform floor heave, and limited sloughing of coal ribs into openings. The optimal orientation of roadways is, therefore, oblique to the lateral stress direction with fewer crosscuts between them.

THE term "splint" seems to have been adopted to describe the fracture of the hard bituminous coals of West Virginia. It is not a scientific name,, but rather a trade term, and does not indicate a correspondence with English splint. At present it is a popular word, and is very loosely applied to coals of various qualities, in the desire to improve their sale. The Kanawha splint is distinguished by its hardness, dull lustre, coarse fibrous structure, its purity, and especially its resistance to atmospheric influence. It kindles very readily, burns with a bright flame, but does not cake, so that a lump when half consumed, may be broken by a slight blow in its plane of cleavage, though &apos;it will resist a&apos; strong blow in any other direction. UNITED States Steel Co.&apos;s Tennessee Coal & Iron Div. Wenonah mines present definite materials handling problems arising from the natural features of the operation. Trackless equipment went a long way toward supplying the answers-but at the same time gave birth to several new posers. Machines-trackless or otherwise-require maintenance and Wenonah&apos;s experience may do much to add to the body of information already available on this type of equipment. Let&apos;s look at the mines themselves. Ore is of sedimentary origin, extending over an area of several square miles. A thickness from 8 to 14 ft is mined. Bed dip varies from the horizontal to 20 pct in local rolls. Practice is to mine across the dip at 14 pct or less. A parting forms a smooth footwall in some of the mines while in others the footwall must be blasted smooth. Ore weighs 215 lb per cu ft in place and is extremely abrasive.

Modern mining is vitally concerned with the prompt, efficient movement of great quantities of bulk materials. It is not surprising, therefore, that intensive efforts are being directed toward improving effectiveness and reducing costs of materials handling systems. Historically, the operation of removing bulk material from a moving conveyor and depositing it in utilization or storage areas has been a high cost segment of the materials handling system. Since this operation is often performed by belt trippers, considerable attention has been focused on improvement of these devices. Frequently, the greatest opportunity for improving performance of these devices is the incorporation of remote or automatic control systems. This article describes tripper control systems developed by Kennecott Copper Corp. and explains the control philosophies used in designing these systems.

It is somewhat surprising that among the many mechanical devices that were brought into the State of Colorado, that the Brückner cylinders alone have stood the test for roasting ores. The brick walls of the Arey and Stetefeld furnaces have been remodelled into reverberatories and compound reverberatories, their binding and anchor irons have been forged into hoes and shovels, while the Crosby and Thompson cylinders have been rent by the ruthless hand of the foundryman searching for a tough piece of boiler plate. Two only of these furnaces remain in operation, of the large stock that came into Colorado by car-loads several years ago, and they occupy only a subordinate position to some reverberatories on the North Boulder Creek. Research efforts have not developed techniques for the complete desulfurization of coal that is needed to reduce air pollution caused by burning coal and to reduce the sulfur in metallurgical coke. Sulfur in coal occurs in three forms and of these, the pyritic sulfur occurs as discrete mineral particles and, at least theoretically, should be subject to physical rejection. Pyrite occurring in hard rock mining is concentrated by froth flotation; therefore, the possibility of removal of pyrite from coal by flotation does exist. With this possibility in mind, the flotation and adsorption characteristics of ore and coal-pyrite were compared while using potassium ethyl xanthate as the collector.

There are undoubtedly many factors that affect the emission of gas from coal but the permeability of coal to gas flow would seem to be fundamental. However, there is very little information on coal permeability to gas flow available in the U.S. at the present time, despite the fact that such knowledge would appear to be significant in any degasification effort. Studies made recently in the mining engineering laboratories at Virginia Polytechnic Institute have determined values of permeability on one-inch cubes of selected coals. COAL PERMEABILITY The permeability values given in this paper are based on adaptations of Darcy&apos;s Law formulated by Henry Darcy in 1856 from experiments with fluid flow in porous media.&apos; Using air as the gaseous fiuid, they were obtained by employing similar methods as are used to determine the permeability of petroleum and gas reservoir rock specimens.

Briefly, can you relate how you got into the minerals industry and some of your experiences as an executive, engineer, and administrator? Also would you tell ME about your affiliation with the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME? Roseburg, Ore., was where I was born and raised. It was, and still is a lumbering town; it couldn&apos;t have been any farther from mining. Upon graduation from high school, I turned 18 and, having already signed up with the Army Corps of Engineers, I was in the service eight days after my birthday. Four months later I was in New Guinea. As an amphibious engineer, I saw many of the Pacific and Philippine Islands, and ended up in Japan just a few days after the war was over. In later years, my work took me back to several of the places I had been during the war.

Economic constraints require that the optimum mineral processing circuit be chosen for a given ore and then the circuit be optimized. Meloy (1983) developed a general methodology for finding the best circuit for a given ore. This analysis, however, did not specify a way to optimize the best circuit once it has been found. To optimize a given circuit, it is necessary to find the optimum set points for each unit operation in the circuit. Developed in this paper is a simple, general equation which, when applied, defines the optimum separation set point for the maximum mineral grade. This general equation, Equation (4), applies not only to simple ores, but also to complex ores containing variable and locked particles. Currently, the optimum set point can be calculated only for heavy media and cyclone circuits, because they are the only unit operations for which the necessary data has been measured.

Thirteen Directors, the Secretary, and seven guests were present. The formation of a Philadelphia. Section was discussed. The proposed rules for admission of additional societies to membership in Engineering Council were approved. An invitation was extended to the American Institute of Metals to become affiliated with the Institute upon the general terms proposed in the report of the Joint Conference Committee of the American Institute of Metals and the American Institute of Mining Engineers. The request of the Iron and. Steel Committee to hold a meeting in Milwaukee during the week of Oct. 7, 1918, was granted. The reports of the Treasurer and Finance Committee were accepted. A change in the By-laws was proposed. Thirty Members, two Associates, and four Junior Members were elected. The status of two Junior Members was changed to Member. The resignations of seven members were accepted. The clues of two members who are on active duty at the front were remitted. One member was reinstated to membership.

Before answering the question raised in the title, let&apos;s briefly consider how East-West trade is viewed within the entire US political spectrum. Essentially, there are four major schools of thought: (1) The Peaceful-Coexistence School. Advocates of this school call themselves free-traders and hold to the premise that: (a) trade benefits all parties involved, hence it is the best tool to achieve peace; (b) US trade barriers should be removed, and the quicker the better; and (c) negotiations, cultural exchanges, and political compromise should be used extensively.
