In the Mitsubishi beneficiation process of ilmenite, chlorine is regenerated in the dechlorination furnace where the gases produced from a selective chlorination of ilmenite are directly introduced. The present paper describes a reaction mechanism and mixing characteristics of the reactant gases for dechlorination of ferric chloride with oxygen. A furnace of a small diameter where the reactant gases passed through in the state of nearly plug flow was used for determination of the effects of temperature and of partial pressures of ferric chloride and oxygen on the rate of the reaction. The experimental data of the reaction rate were applied to various models for calculations of the rate equations and the most suitable reaction model was determined. The results of the experiments also showed that effects of gas mixing onto the reaction rate could not be ignored, so that experiments of gas mixing was carried out. Gas flow patterns and scale effects were observed with use of transparent model furnaces of different sizes.

Only within the past few years have chemists recognized the importance of the fact, that comparatively large amounts of phosphorus may occur in the siliceous residue left from the acid treatment of iron-ores. We know of one case in which an ore contained about three times as much phosphorus in the insoluble, as in the soluble, form. It was disposed of at a premium, as an exceptionally high-grade Bessemer ore containing 0.010 per cent. of soluble phosphorus, while the insoluble phosphorus brought the total amount up to 0.040 per cent. The magnetite and specular hematite of the Lake Superior districts and the fine ores of the Mesabi range, as a rule, contain very small amounts of insoluble phosphorus. But the mining of the soft hematites and the progressive lowering of the phosphorus-limit in a strictly Bessemer ore, have combined to make the determination of insoluble phosphorus one of the routine-requirements in all analyses of Bessemer ores. The insoluble phosphorus is understood to be that pbosphorus which cannot be extracted by boiling hydrochloric acid of 1.1 specific gravity. The time given for the extraction of the soluble phosphorus will vary, of course, according to the nature of the ore. In ordinary practice the boiling is continued until the residue is white or only very slightly tinged with ferric oxide. This ordinarily takes from half an hour to an hour. The prolonged boiling of ores known to contain considerable quantities of insoluble phosphorus has failed to extract any appreciable amount of additional phosphorus. W E seem to have assumed the careless habit in recent years of treating mining geology as synonymous with exploration geology, and exploration synonymous with exploration for new deposits-to be forgetting that mining geology includes also the geologic control or guidance of day-by-day mining operation. In the publicized romantic spotlight of the search for new deposits, we forget the man with the dirty over-alls, grubbing away at the daily tasks of finding new shoots and of helping to keep production up and cost down. During 1949, as in previous years, the resident geologist continued his quiet efficient functioning while the exploration geologist continued to stay in the spotlight-although this time he shared it with what may be called the resource-appraisal geologist. Many broad problems of national import such as tax modification, the operations of the Economic Cooperation Administration, and certain international relations have come up against an unexpected factor lurking in the background, namely, appraisal of world and domestic reserves and latent resources. T. M. Broderick opened the year with his address as retiring president of the Society of Economic Geologists, wherein he analyzed the problems of exploration geology listing among them "the shortcomings of the geologists themselves, of the educators, the mining companies, our Published by permission of the Director, U. S. Geological Survey. technical publications, the Federal Survey and Bureau of Mines, and the property owners."

This chapter reviews the steps which should be taken from the time it is decided to consider autogenous grinding in the development of a new ore deposit or the expansion of an existing plant up until the purchase of the new autogenous mills. In this case the term autogenous includes semi -autogenous, secondary pebble mills, and lump milling as well as fully autogenous grinding systems. Also, both wet and dry grinding alternatives have been included. Before the test program it must be decided how many bulk samples are required to properly assess the autogenous grinding possibilities of the deposit. Also, a decision must be made on where and how the samples are to be ground i.e. pilot mill at site or in established location, wet and or dry grinding, etc. In the test program itself, certain fundamental data must be obtained. The testing should include enough work to determine whether fully autogenous or semi-autogenous grinding should be used and what type produces best power efficiency. Also, all the other pertinent data should be collected such as power; tonnages; feed, charge, and product sizing; circulating loads, etc. If a secondary mill is required to produce a final grind the decision on whether a pebble or ball mill should be used may require additional test work. Finally, the concentration of the mineral may play an important part in selection of the circuit and should become a part of the final testing once the grinding has been established.

INTRODUCTION The first commercial plant in the world to successfully produce pellets from manganese ore fines is the ICOMI pelletizing facility in northern Brazil. The main purpose of this paper is to describe the manganese pelletizing process that was developed through a cooperative R & D program by the Bethlehem Steel Corporation and ICOMI, i.e., Industria e Commercio de Minerios, S. A. The process combines heavy- media and gravity separation, reduction roasting, magnetic separation, and pelletizing on a straight-grate indurating machine. It produces high-grade manganese pellets from reviously unsalable low-grade ore fines at a rate of 20,000 tonnes (1) per month. The physical properties of the manganese pellets are comparable to those of iron ore pellets. The pelletizing plant, built at a cost of about 18 million dollars, is part of an ICOMI complex that includes manganese ore mining, an ore-washing plant, and railroad and port facilities, as well as two town sites. These two towns, one at the mine and the other at the port, each with complete community services, were built by ICOMI to serve the needs of over 1500 employees that operate the industrial complex. To give an idea of the magnitude of the investment represented by this complex, the cost up to 1957 to develop the mine and supporting services and social infrastructure was over 100 million dollars. It should be borne in mind that the above capital cost figures are in dollars of the years during which the respective projects were initiated and completed.

To me, as to many other students of railroad needs, the necessity for reducing the dead weight in railroad rolling stock, both passenger and freight, has been apparent for, many years. The problem of weight reduction of passenger cars is so entirely different from that of freight cars, is so much more to the fore at the present moment and would seem to be so much nearer solution, that I shall confine myself in these remarks to the former. On the surface of things there would appear to be no close association of thought between the decline in traffic on the railroads, which is largely responsible for their present deplorable financial condition, and new metal alloys. It sounds like a trick riddle a school boy might propound to his parents. But that there is a relationship between the two, and one that bids fair to be of great mutual benefit to the railroads and the makers of .high-strength metal alloys, I hope I shall be able to show before I have finished. To make the situation understandable to those who are not entirely familiar with the problems of railroad management, and, who feel that the railroads have not moved as rapidly as they should in the direction of greater use of newer materials and newer appliances, I shall have to review briefly the course of recent railroad history. If in this part of my talk I seem to the professional man to be a little off key I feel sure my remarks will be fully appreciated by the business man who cannot understand why he is not making better headway in selling things to the railroads. To do this I shall have to go back to war times for a moment.

This paper describes the sources of funds required by the petroleum industry to finance capital expenditures and also presents a discussion of the effect of rising construction costs on these expenditures. The petroleum industry obtains its capital funds from several sources: (I) internal, from retained cash earnings; and (2) external, from borrowings and the sale of securities to the public. The upward trend of capital expenditures of the petroleum industry is caused in the main by the influence of two powerful factors: (I) the physical growth in the demand for oils; and (2) the rising cost of drilling wells and constructing refineries, pipe lines, and other facilities. The segregation of these factors is accomplished by deflating the actual capital expenditures so that they are shown in terms of 1939 costs and then subtracting the adjusted series from the actual figures to yield a set of data representing the expenditures made on account of higher costs. Rising costs affect prices and the portion attributable to this factor had to be generated from the cash earnings of the industry, which called for higher oil prices. Introduction Capital may be defined as "wealth employed in or available for production." All production requires capital. Expanding industries require more capital than static ones, and technological industries employ more capital than. those in which little equipment is needed. The petroleum industry is both rapidly growing and highly technological, and, being a large industry, its capital requirements are prodigious, amounting to about one-seventh of the total of all American business, excluding agriculture.* Capital formation may be defined as the method by which the wealth or capital needed in the productive processes is created. There are various ways in which capital funds may be obtained but there is only one way in which capital can be created—out of production in excess of consumption, that is, savings. The physical realities are simple, but the monetary concepts are complicated because the mechanism of credit can draw upon future savings. The 400-ton testing machine, ordered in June, 1875, by the United States Board appointed to test "iron, steel, and other metals," has lately been completed at the Watertown Arsenal, thoroughly proved and accepted by the Board. The excellence of the machine in every respect is more than satisfactory, and its accuracy is at first sight astonishing, although an investigation of its principles must show that if the weighing apparatus will weigh at all, it must do so with perfect accuracy, because all its movements are absolutely without friction. The proof experiments were numerous, and the effects of recoil after sudden ruptures at maximum loads, were watched with great care, but without much anxiety, because the weighing parts affected are by no means delicate in structure, and their motion is almost infinitely small. Among the tests were the following : A forged link of hard, wrought iron, 5 inches in diameter between the eyes, was slowly strained in tension, and broke short off with a loud report at 722,800 pounds. The diameter before breaking at the point of fracture was 5.04 inches; after breaking, 4.98 inches. In order to see if the weighing parts had been disturbed by the recoil, which was obviously near the greatest recoil the machine will ever suffer, a horse-hair was next tested; it was 7-1000ths of an inch in diameter; it stretched 30 per cent., and broke at 1 pound. Other horse-hairs vary in tenacity between 1 and 2 pounds. Of course, the accuracy of the machine on such delicate specimens, and indeed on specimens having some hundreds of pounds tenacity, has been checked and proved by other weighing machines. A 5-inch round bar, turned down to 38 inches diameter along the centre, was pulled apart at 430,200 pounds tension. Then some more horse-hairs were tested ; also copper wires 191/2-1000ths of an inch in diameter, which averaged 25 pounds tenacity..

This paper aims to put into useful form the information, at hand regarding temperatures of molten steels, covering all carbon contents up to 1.5 per cent., in the hope that if the assumed ideal temperatures tabulated are incorrect the right ones may . be brought to light. THE finishing and casting temperature of steel is a subject concerning which there is so much to learn that some temerity is required to write about it. This paper is, therefore, suggestive rather than dogmatic, though the views expressed seem now to the writer to be correct; nevertheless, they may be modified by future developments or discoveries but until then may be of some utility, particularly to beginners in the making of steel. Consideration is limited to the temperatures of simple steels, also called carbon steels,, which are those in which carbon is the only element introduced for the purpose of conferring desired physical properties. Alloy steels will receive attention later. Three things largely determine what a batch of steel really will be; viz., composition, casting temperature, and rate of teeming. Each has its advocates as being the most important; but they are so interrelated that each must conform to or be right for the, other two. When one is claimed to be the most essential to have right, that, probably, was the one that it was found had to be of a certain description, within narrow limits, to suit the already adopted variations of the other two; that is, it was the last of the three to be brought into line.

It is seldom the privilege of one who contributes to the Transactions of a technical society, to describe a new industry in which, by processes employed for the first time, are attained results of conspicuous value. There are but few such patches of virgin soil worth the tilling, within the area circumscribed by the industries which have experienced a regular and uniform development. New and startling methods in production are often announced as about to be introduced; but, as a rule, they take their place among the " large desires with most uncertain issues," or give new significance to the historic words of an eminent statesman concerning " the bright beginnings and the bitter end of a halcyon and vociferous proceeding." In this paper I shall have the pleasure of briefly describing a new industry which has been established without announcement or proclamation — the manufacture of serviceable pressure pipes of great strength, from strips of steel or iron wound spirally, heated only along the overlapping edges, welded by hammering and finished into tubes of uniform diameter, and of such length as mag be found convenient in handling and transportation. As such tubes are now manufactured on a considerable scale, in a range of sizes which will soon include everything between 4 inches and 30 inches, and as much larger as may be needed, both process and product are likely to be of interest to engineers in all departments of professional work. The raw material of the industry is the ordinary sheet-iron or steel of commerce, of such lengths and widths as it is convenient to roll. The range of the ganges of the metal which can be employed has riot yet been determined. The lightest metal thus far successfully made into pipe is No. 29 iron, and the heaviest a steel gauging somewhere between 12 and 14. Heavier machines are now building which will bend steel .165 of an inch in thickness, or No. 8 of' the Birmingham gauge. Probably No. 20 or No. 22 will be the lightest used in making commercial pipes; hut the experiment with No. 29 was interesting as showing the readiness with which the flame can be controlled. The slow, tedious and costly method of reducing copper matte to metallic copper in the reverberatory furnace, commonly known as the Welsh process, was displaced by the rapid and inexpensive converter process about fifty years ago. The art of refining copper was for many generations a carefully guarded secret among the Welsh furnacemen and was handed down among them from father to son. An attempt was made to apply it at Butte when the smelting of copper ore first started there but it proved too difficult and expensive under local conditions, and until the introduction of the converter process the entire output of copper was shipped to Swansea in the form of high-grade (60 per cent) matte. Before the construction of the Manhes converter, attempts had been made to reduce copper matte in the bessemer steel converter, but these failed, chiefly because the air was blown through the bottom of the vessel. The air holes became clogged with chilled copper as soon as the reduction started. Manhes partially overcame this difficulty by placing the tuyeres in the side of the vessel, some, distance above the bottom, thus allowing space beneath them for the copper to accumulate. Nevertheless the first attempts to operate such a converter at Butte were not successful, as no means had been provided for clearing away obstructions, which formed to some extent in front of the tuyeres. This difficulty was overcome by drilling holes in the outside wall of the air chamber directly opposite the holes in the shell and lining, so that these could be punched

THOUGH born in England-on Nov. 23, 1372 William Wraith was brought to this country at the age of ten. Eight years later he entered the University of Illinois, transferring to the Michigan College of Mines where he got his E.M. in 1894. For the next three years he was a mine surveyor for the fuel department of the Santa Fe Railroad. Then he got into the copper-mining industry, which has occupied his attention for the last forty years. First he was engineer, at Butte, for the Boston & Montana company, and then helped to build the Washoe smelter at Anaconda, of which he was assistant superintendent from 1906 to 1913. The Anaconda company then sent him to Salt Lake City as manager of its subsidiary.

Operations in the Texas Gulf Coast during the past year have resulted in the discovery of a number of new fields arid the extension of a few of the older fields, both by deeper drilling and by lateral development. Twenty-six new oil and gas-producing areas and discovery of oil or gas in three subsequently abandoned wells have been recorded for a total of 29 new fields of varying importance. Producing areas at Conroe, Manvel, Greta, Pierce Junction, Hastings, Dirks, Thompson, Batson, Mykawa, Tomball, Raccoon Bend, Samfordyce arid Saxct have been increased. Primary geologic studies followed by geophysical mapping or straight geophysical prospects have been responsible for the more important discoveries. These methods have further proved themselves an aid to limiting wildcatting to the more prospective areas and as the chief means to discover reserves in the future. Production for 1935 totaled 69,560,720 bbl. as compared with 60,850,-360 bbl. for 1934. Strict proration has been in force throughout the discovery of more oil than has been produced. The number of producing oil wells has steadily increased to 4851 at the end of 1935, as compared with 3858 at the end of 1934, owing in part to the prolonged life, because of proration. There were 1272 oil and gas wells completed during 1935, as against 835 in 1934. New Fields Pertinent data on the new fields discovered during 1935 are includrd in Tables 1 and 2. Hence, the discussion of these discoveries will be limited. Bee County.—Three new gas fields were added during the year: Beeville, discovered by G. M. Church in No. 1 Wood on Sept. 21; Foley, discovered by Dirks Bros. in No. 1 Foley on Feb. 8; and Plummer, discovered by Hynes and Fisher in No. 1 T. M. Plummer on Sept. 2. THE object of this study is to investigate the effect of prior tensile strain on the fracture stress of a metal. This is done in a theoretical manner starting from the point of view developed by the author in his thermodynamic theory of the fracture of metals. The results are compared with experimental findings and a rational interpretation is given to work that shows the variation of fracture stress with prior tensile strain. THEORY OF FRACTURE In the thermodynamic theory of the fracture of metals developed earlier,1 it was shown that a critical strain energy per unit volume exists. This is characteristic of the material and may be calculated from basic thermodynamic data. When the area under the flow curve reaches this characteristic value, fracture occurs. The general criterion for fracture is expressed in the form u ± uo = JLm?AV/V [1] where Lm, is the latent heat of melting of the unit volume, ?V/V is the ratio of the change in volume of the unit volume to the original unit volume on passing from the solid to the liquid state, [uo] is an initial energy density, and J is a conversion factor, which changes energy from heat to mechanical units. As a first approximation, it will be assumed that the stress-strain curve is the straight line that extends from the point of maximum load onward, extrapolated back to the axis of zero strain, for example, line AC of Fig. 1. If the point of intersection of the straight line with the axis of zero strain is represented by so, and the slope of the straight line is p, the analytic form of the flow curve is [s = s + pd [2]] and the strain energy per unit volume evaluated from [JvdS] becomes (vsod + pd2/ 2). When this latter term reaches the critical value JLm?V/V (designated hereafter by M), it is assumed that fracture occurs. This leads to the following expression for the fracture stress: [s1 = \/C r.2 + 2Mp [31] The strain at fracture may be calculated from Eqs 2 and 3. It is assumed in this paper that the initial energy density is either zero or that it may be neglected. Furthermore, the complicated states of stress and of strain existing in the necked region of the tensile specimen after "necking" has occurred will also be neglected for the present, so that average conditions will be assumed to prevail. IRON oxide .(Fe0) plays an extremely important part in the manufacture of steel. In the open-hearth furnace and the Bessemer converter it is the chemically predominant compound and controls to a large extent both the operation of the furnaces and the composition and quality of their products. Almost all of the refining action is carried out through the medium of FeO, which oxidizes carbon, manganese, silicon, and phosphorus. At the end of any open-hearth or Bessemer heat the steel contains dissolved iron oxide, which must be wholly or partly eliminated. The type of deoxidation product depends on the amount of dissolved iron oxide and on the deoxidizer used. After the heat has been deoxidized and while it is being teemed, iron oxide diffuses from the ladle slag into the metal, causing losses of deoxidizer and increase in iron oxide content of the steel. It is generally believed that non-metallic inclusions are responsible for a great many failures of steel in service and for decreased yield of steel during rolling. The basis of most non-metallic inclusions is dissolved iron oxide. This investigation was undertaken in order to determine the amount of iron oxide that will dissolve in iron under various conditions. Steel-making slags are complex and it has been thought best to determine solubility under simple slags as a first step. The study is being continued under slags whose compositions approach those of operating. slags.

Prior to 1927 the lead blast furnace charge at El Paso consisted principally of direct-smelting carbonate ores, very low in zinc, and the resulting slag seldom carried more than 4.0 pct. With the exhaustion of the mines in Northern Mexico which supplied these ores, they were supplanted with a much smaller tonnage of sulphide concentrates containing appreciable amounts of zinc, and the zinc content of the slag rose to 10.0 pct. The Anaconda Company's slag fuming plant at East Helena, Montana, had then been in successful operation for several years, and it was immediately recognized that, while at that time the production of high zinc slag was small, if the grade held, a plant for the recovery of zinc from the accumulated slag might some day be practical. The grade not only held but became increasingly higher so that by 1946 suffcient slag had been accumulated to warrant the construction of a fuming plant regardless of future slag production from the blast furnaces, and with the removal of Government restrictions on construction at the end of the war the project was undertaken. The general design of the plant follows that at Bunker Hill, with waste heat boiler, unit coal pulverizers and even more extensive instrumentation and automatic control. The area around the lead blast furnaces is rather congested, being cut off from the nearest feasible site for the fuming plant by the copper plant, so that the most practical route for hot slag transfer is through the converter aisle. For this reason and also to make use of the existing converter cranes to serve the fuming furnace, an unused reverberatory at the north end of the converter building was dismantled and the fuming furnace and boiler located in its place. A flue at right angles to the furnace and boiler runs northward to the U-tube coolers and baghouse (Fig 1). From the bag-house a steel flue runs eastward to an existing and long unused 300 ft con- Crete stack. The coal handling system and de-leading plant lie north of the furnace and east of the cooling tubes and baghouse. The furnace is conventional, 8 X 21 X 33 ft high inside and completely water jacketed (Fig 2). There are 21

The combination wet and dry coal-cleaning process is not an attempt at a compromise between the wets and the drys nor is its merit confined entirely to the limitation of moisture in the smaller sizes. It is more correctly, and more broadly, an application of the sized-coal cleaning principle adapting itself in an ideal fashion to present day multiple-size preparation practice. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to call attention to the broader significance of the term "combination wet and dry process" and to mention some of the factors that govern its application. In the narrow sense, when considered apart from the sized-coal cleaning principle, the combination process finds its justification chiefly in the ability to limit the moisture in cleaned coal. Larger sizes of coal offer less superficial area compared with their bulk for the attraction of moisture films. They drain more readily in bins or railroad cars, having more interstitial space for the free flow of water. Therefore, they neither attract nor hold objectionable moisture percentages. In fact, there is so keen a demand for certain washed sizes containing some moisture that hygroscopic salts such as calcium chloride are applied to attract and retain it. When coal deliveries are made on a guaranteed moisture percentage the coarser sizes may be washed and mixed back with the fines without adding greatly to the original moisture but the fines must be dry cleaned or dried to control moisture. Thus in all respects moisture in the coarser sizes is less objectionable than in the fines. The implication of this statement, that moisture is always more or less objectionable, is true. It is safe to say that if dry-cleaning apparatus could be perfected to a point at which its technical results, cost and other aspects would be equal to wet washing, water would no longer be used. As it is, we find that good technical results are more difficult to obtain by dry cleaning than by water. Obviously the use of air tables for coarse coal is not ideal, for it involves the attempt to stratify material in a thin bed on a table surface when the load is only one particle deep. Grinding costs are an important item in cement manufacture, and the cost of power is one of the large items in grinding costs. Even where power is of secondary importance, cost items dependent on mill capacity are influenced by the efficiency with which the mill uses power. Tube mills typify the grinding mills most generally used in cement plants, though other types are in use. Tube mills have been widely criticized as being extremely inefficient, and this feeling regarding them has led to many attempts to design more efficient grinding equipment. Other types may be an improvement over tube mills, but the improvement has certainly not been revolutionatry, at least as applied to clinker grinding. The very fact that there is doubt regarding the relative efficacy of various types of mills is an indication that an adequate basis for an analysis of performance is lacking. The development of methods of analyzing mill performance has been hampered by the lack of a suitable method for measuring the work actually done in pulverizing. There has been no acceptable standard to which mill performance might be compared. As a consequence, it was not known whether the margin of possible improvement in pulverizing operations was large or small. Even direct comparison of different types of mills was seldom possible because most plants had only one type of mill for each type of service. Comparisons between plants were difficult because of differences in the grinding characteristics of various clinkers. Some recent developments complete a chain of circumstances that place the cement industry in a particularly fortunate position for the study of its clinker-pulverizing operations. Modern investigators of grinding phenomena have generally agreed that the best measure of mill performance is the production of new surface. For most materials this measure of performance is largely theoretical and has a rather remote connection with the practical aims of the grinding operation. In clinker grinding, on the other hand, surface area is intimately connected with the properties conferred on the cement by grinding.
