The major consideration in any management and engineering decision is the economic evaluation of factors. The right decision is the best cost decision, provided of course that it is the safest. Changes, improvements, and advances in mining technology, as in any business, come about through the pressure of economics in combination with the inventiveness and engineering abilities of efficient mine operators. Without proper economic evaluation and an appreciation of profit and loss of an operation, advances in mining methods would come about at a slow pace, if at all.

In any process wherein materials must be pelletized, a crucial period exists during the interval between the manufacture of the green pellets and their subsequent heat treatment. The pellets must possess sufficient strength and plasticity to withstand conveying and sizing. Also, they must be neither excessively brittle nor excessively plastic when placed in a bed on a traveling grate for heat treatment. An acceptable pellet, in the event sufficient forces are applied to cause its fracture, will merely split into two or three large fragments which would not drastically alter the permeability of the pellet bed. However, when brittle pellets are broken, they shatter so that the resultant fine particles either decrease the perimeability of the bed or become entrained in the gas stream and thereby cause dust problems. On the other hand, excessively plastic pellets may not break at all but may merely flatten. This would seriously hamper bed permeability. In the past, pellet evaluation has usually been left to the creative and artistic talents of the balling operators. A multitude of techniques have evolved, of which the most common is the simple compression test. For this test a hand-operated device loads single pellets to fracture, but reliability is strictly operator- dependent. Probably the next most common test is the drop test, which is conducted according to several different procedures. This is an important quantitative test for estimating the amount of handling a pellet will withstand. There are many other tests, such as pinching a pellet between the thumb and index finger, but none are capable of producing reproducible results.

IN the exploration of a copper deposit by drilling, obvious advantages are to be gained from a distinction between primary and secondary ore.1 Perhaps the chief of these is the aid which such a distinction renders in determining where a given hole should stop. The copper assay, often a sufficient guide, cannot always be exclusively relied upon. Primary ores may extend downward indefinitely and may fluctuate in value independently of depth: if primary ores are consistently lean for a considerable vertical distance, there is little reason to expect that, still deeper, they will increase to the commercial grade; on the other hand, rich primary ores may persist uninterruptedly downward or may come in again below a lean interval. Secondary ores, however, have a comparatively limited vertical extent; in a large way enrichment decreases with depth and finally gives out. It follows then, that when a hole descends from profitable ore into ore of less than the commercial minimum, the practical significance of the situation depends upon whether this decrease results from a decrease in secondary enrichment or is a variation in primary content: if the copper of the ore passed through has been chiefly secondary, little is gained in the average case by extending the hole much below the point at which the commercial limit is reached; but, when copper is chiefly primary, due weight must be given to the possibility that, still deeper, the ore may again improve.

INTRODUCTION Behavior of joints in rock and interfaces in structures and geological media subjected to static and cyclic loading play an important role in analysis and design of structures founded on rock and soil foundations. The objectives of this paper are (1) to describe a device that can permit laboratory testing of joints and interfaces under translational and torsional motions, (2) to present procedures for constitutive modelling of joints and interfaces with a typical example of modelling of a concrete-sand interface, and (3) to give brief details of the proposed research plans for cyclic testing and modelling of joints in concrete as a simulation of joints in rock. The subject of testing and modelling of interfaces and joints is wide in scope, and in view of space limitations, it is not possible to provide a comprehensive review herein. Hence, only a few references, particularly relevant to the ongoing research by the authors and co-workers are included; a review of the subject can be found in (Desai, 1981) and (Heuze and Barbour, 1982). Although there can be (minor) differences in modelling for the behavior of joints and interfaces, the basic procedures can be considered to be essentially similar. Now onwards in this paper, the term joints will be used to imply both joints and interfaces. Kennecott Copper's mining activities in Arizona are conducted by the Ray Mines Div., located in Ray, Ariz., in the Mineral Creek mining district about 60 miles southeast of Phoenix. The Ray orebody lies in a mineralized zone belted on the east, west, and north by well defined faults. The orebody consists principally of schist with intrusions of quartz porphyry and diabase. The dominant ore mineral in the schist and quartz porphyry is chalcocite, with some native copper, and in most areas the orebody has been heavily oxidized. In the diabase the dominant ore mineral is chalcopyrite. Ore deposition in the schist portion is very erratic, with no apparent structural explanation. In 1873 silver prospectors opened the mining district, but it was not until 1899 that an English company made the first major attempt to exploit the copper deposits. This venture failed because of improper sampling and limited development work. In 1904 D. C. Jackling, Seeley Mudd, and Philip Weiseman became interested in the Ray Copper Co. and the Gila Copper Co., which later merged as Ray Consolidated Copper Co. In 1926 the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. took over Ray Consolidated and in turn was taken over by Kennecott Copper Corp. in 1933. The extensive program of surface and underground development and exploration begun in 1907 continued through successive changes of management and ownership to the present time.

No observations on the mechanical properties of iron-manganese alloys have been published since pure manganese became readily available, either distilled manganese or electrolytic manganese. The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether iron-manganese alloys are essentially brittle, as reported by Hadfield,1 or whether the lack of ductility observed was due to impurities in the alloys that he studied. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The alloys were melted in a 100-lb. high-frequency induction furnace with a magnesia crucible, using ingot iron and electrolytic manganese. The heats were split, the first giving six 18-lb. ingots and the second three. Each successive heat was higher in manganese and about 0.3 per cent silicon [ ] was added as ferrosilicon. The alloys forged without difficulty-and were given a 90 percent reduction to 3/4-in. rounds. The chemical analysis of the alloys is given in Table I. The forged rods were homogenized for [ ] 24 hr. at 1150°C. (2100°F.) and air-cooled. The alloys were tested in two conditions of heat-treatment: (I) as normalized from 870°C. (1600°F.) and (2) normalized from 870°C. and tempered for z hr. at 540°C. (1000°F.) and air-cooled. The tensile specimens were 0.505 in. in diameter with a 2-in. gauge length, and the impact specimens were V-notch Charpy. The proportional limit and yield strength were taken from the stress-strain diagrams drawn by a Peters recorder. The data obtained from the tensile test and the hardness measurements are given in Table 2. Specimens that were normalized are designated by N; those that were normalized and tempered by T. Alloy G was tempered after forging (D).

The New York talc deposits of commercial importance are in St. Lawrence and Lewis counties, in the northwest Adirondack Mountains (Fig 1). All of the deposits are of pre-Cambrian age and occur within highly deformed and recrystallized marble of the Gren-ville series. The deposits in St. Lawrence County, near Gouverneur, are the largest and most productive of their type known in the Western Hemisphere. In 1948 the seven mines which are in operation will produce about 130,000 tons of ground talc. All talc production in Lewis County is from one mine. There the annual production ranges from 15,000 to 30,000 tons. These so called talcs of New Yorb State include earth materials of different chemical and mineral compositions. In general the mineral talc is subordinate in amount to other minerals in both the Gouverneur and Natural Bridge deposits. In the Gouverneur district the mineral talc comprises less than 25 pct of the mined and ground rock. Most of the rock mined is a tremolite- or tremolite-anthophyllite schist somewhat altered to serpentine and talc. This characteristic in no way tlevaluates the "talc" for certain markets, and in some instances makes the material more desirable. One of the great copper-producing areas of the world is comprised of five U. S. western states and northern Sonora, Mexico. The Southwest province of this area, covering southern Arizona, south- western New Mexico, and northern Sonora, produces some 55 pct of U. S. copper output and the equivalent of 15 pct of world production. In 1956 the area produced about 550,000 tons. Tucson is approximately the center of the oval- shaped province, which measures only 300 miles on its east-west axis and about 200 miles on its short axis. Northwest of the oval, and forming a tenuous connection with the Utah and Nevada copper fields, is an important operating mine, Bagdad, and also the now inactive United Verde. Along its north- south axis, running from Globe, through Tucson, to Nogales, ten moderate to major copper properties have been discovered or revived during the past 15 years, and five of these in only the past seven years. The latter five properties lie in an area 25 miles in diameter, centering 20 miles south of Tucson. In order of discovery, or revival, they are: Banner's Mineral Hill and Daisy; Cyprus et al's Pima; Duval's Esperanza; Asarco's East Pima (now called Mission mine) ; and Lewisohn's Peach. Total tonnage is estimated at about 250 million tons averaging some 0.90 pct Cu, but ultimate production may exceed this amount since some of the reserve is open ended.

In the past few years changes have taken place in shaft sinking. Progress has been made with types of machinery designed, developed, and made available to shaft sinking contractors. This is particularly true of drilling and mucking equipment. Compared with conventional clamshell loading, mucking or loading with a crawler-mounted overshot loader is a new technique for shaft work. There are several methods of clamshell loading. Dravo Construction Co. mounts an air tugger on the clamshell to operate the closing line. The load, or holding line, is attached to the hoist of a crane or whirler at the shaft collar. The clamshell is raised or lowered by the hoist when a signal is given by a bell or light system operated by men at the bottom of the shaft. Two men control the drift of the clamshell with tag lines, pulling it to any position in the shaft for loading, or over the shaft muck bucket for emptying. One man operates the air tugger to open and close the clamshell by means of two lines attached to the operating air valve, just as reins are used to drive a horse. One man operates the signal telling the hoist operator when to raise or lower the clamshell. This method requires two hoisting lines in the shaft-the line from the mine hoist that lifts

This paper describes a comprehensive computer program, developed under the joint sponsorship of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Bureau of Mines, that simulates the performance of coal preparation plants. A typical plant configuration may include several different washers, crushers, and screens as well as stream blenders and stream splitters, interconnected in whatever manner the user may specify. The program will predict the mass and energy yields of each unit and the properties of each flowstream (weight, ash, pyritic sulfur, total sulfur, and energy distributions), provided the feed properties and appropriate values for various control parameters are given. The program is used to assess washability characteristics of different coals, to determine the effectiveness of different plant operating conditions, and to compare the performance of various plant configurations. A brief description is given of the methods used to carry out the calculations for each type of unit. Results of some calculations are also presented. These results illustrate the versatility of the program for analyzing both simple and complex plant configurations. The paper concludes with a description of other accomplishments and future plans.

IN shaft sinking for coal mines, the cost item greatly influences the method adopted. This holds true especially when soft material must be traversed. The average life of a coal mine is short. This is clue either to the limited area of the coal basin or to the great expense of maintenance and haulage underground when the entries are extended a considerable distance from the hoisting shaft. Therefore, the engineer in opening a coal mine is confronted with the fact that the cost must be kept within certain bounds else the venture will prove unprofitable. For this reason he may be prohibited from adopting certain safe, but expensive, methods that are used in sinking caissons for foundations, driving transportation tunnels, or other work of permanent construction. A common method of sinking through difficult ground employs the aid of a steel shoe pushed ahead of the shaft timbers. Another is the drop-shaft method. These two methods were used in sinking the main shaft and the air shaft of the Eagle No. 3 mine, at Des Moines, Ia., and the following data show the relative success and cost of the two methods of sinking under the same conditions. Use of electrical power in the bituminous mining industry has increased many fold during the last few decades. Rapid changes have also occurred in mine electrical power systems in order to meet the demands from highly mechanized mines. Fires, explosions, and deaths due to electrocutions are the primary hazards due to the underground use of electricity, although there has been a marked decrease in the fatality rate from electrical accidents. However, efforts to eliminate electrical hazards and to insure trained manpower for better distribution, utilization, and protection of the electrical systems cannot be relaxed. In this article, 200 fatal accidents that occurred during the period from 1955 to 1970 have been analyzed. Accident frequency has been correlated with the size of the mine and of the work force, and with age and work and task experience. A strong negative correlation has been established between task experience and accident frequency. Though the available data permitted only a limited analysis, need for improvements in electrical power technology and for better education and training has been identified and discussed. Missing information in accident statistics is outlined and suggestions for better hazard analysis are presented.

Activity in the oil fields of the state was at a low ebb during the year because of the longest period of low prices that has yet prevailed, which has been detrimental to both the eastern and western sections of the state. Production for the state as a whole shows a drop of 209,192 bbl. during 1939, the total being 5,356,963 bbl. The loss is in the production of the western division, where a loss of approximately 300,000 bbl. more than offset a gain of approximately 100,000 bbl. in the eastern division. The loss in the western division can be attributed to decline in drilling activity due to the low prices prevailing, which were caused by flooding of the normal markcts with cheap Illinois crude. The gain in the eastern division is the result of repressuring operations begun in previous years and now showing results, and not to any renewed drilling activity. Gas development in western Kentucky during 1939 was of minor importance. In eastern Kentucky approximately 50 producing gas wells were drilled, which were sufficient for present market with excess reserves already developed. With the severe winter and additional industry load every gas well connected has been on line for the past three months. Although all demands are being met, development will be greatly increased during 1940 to meet depletion. From the geological point of view, the drilling activity in the western division developed additional information of benefit. Several wells on blocks of acreage assembled in previous years were drilled in the deeper parts of the Western Coal Basin—southern part of the Illinois Basin— giving for the first time accurate information about the Pennsylvanian and lower formations down to and through the Devonian.

THE necessity for slime elimination from valuable mineral and coal products has become increasingly significant within the past 5 years.' , Most of the mechanized mining and present beneficiation methods have resulted in larger tonnages of extreme fines, silts, and clay, commonly called slimes, processed by the preparation plant. Economics in turn have forced the plant operator constantly to lower the bottom size of effective beneficiation, necessitating an almost complete recovery of valuable solids regardless of particle size. When these important factors are considered, the need for an efficient slime removal method for fine solids becomes self-evident. Ordinarily slimes have been classified as ranging from 75 microns, or 200 mesh, down to colloidal dimensions of less than one micron. At the same time there is general agreement that the most troublesome slimes are primarily clays, silts and extreme fines, so that the actual top size may be placed at approximately 30 to 40 microns. This immediately restricts any desliming operation to classification, as screening or other methods would be both uneconomical and grossly inefficient at such dimensions. INTRODUCTION Tuff is being considered as a possible geologic median for the underground storage of commercial high level radioactive wastes by the Department of Energy (DOE). DOE has the responsibility for developing or improving the technology fir safely and permanently isolating these wastes. DOE programs must satisfy requirements established by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for the licensing and regulating of these storage facilities (NRC 1981). Pertinent draft NRC requirements are: 1) releases of radioactivity to the environment must be within prescribed limits and 2) emplaced canisters containing wastes must be retrievable up to 50 years following emplacement. High level radioactive wastes produce heat in storage and it is essential that the thermal/mechanical/hydrological response of the host rock will not significantly degrade either the structural performance o£ the repository or the ability of the natural or engineered barriers to retard radionuclide migration. The Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations (NNWSI) was established by DOE to evaluate the suitability of disposing of high level nuclear wastes on or near the Nevada Test Site (NTS) (NNWSI 1980). NNWSI has focused exploration and site evaluation on the tuffs of Yucca Mountain. Field testing is essential to support site characterization and repository design efforts. Preliminary studies have been conducted indicating that tuffs in G-tunnel on the NIS contain welded and nonwelded tuffs that have similar properties to those in Yucca Mountain. Thus, field testing can be accelerated. This paper discusses the issues supporting the planned field experiments in G-tunnel. Issues not related to rock mechanics are not included.

IT is not my intention in this article to consider this subject in the light of the geographer or geologist, but rather in that of the mining engineer, and to endeavor to show the necessity and value to him of studying the minor details of the field or district in which he may be engaged. It has been said by a distinguished geologist that "the natural boundaries of the geographer are rarely described by right lines. Whenever they occur, however, the geologist may look for something remarkable." And again ; " Physiognomy is no idle or doubtful science in connection with geology. The physiognomy of a country indicates almost invariably its geological character." Our country furnishes examples enough of the truth of these remarks, and in no part of it is it so beautifully illustrated as in our own State, which has been so ably described by Prof. Lesley in his admirable little work on the "Topography of Coal." As the great mountain lines become guides to the geologist in determining and mapping out the geography of the formations, so do the minor details of topography become guides to the mining engineer in conducting his explorations, discovering of dislocations, and determining the character of the deposits which are the object of his search. It is therefore requisite that he should, whilst making his surveys, pay the strictest attention to every variation of the landscape and surface of the ground. Efforts have been made for many years to observe pore structure of sedimentary rocks on a microscopic scale. A better description of the pore structure in reservoir rock would aid in the development of relations between flow through tube network models and flow in consolidated reservoir rock. The unique qualities of the scanning electron miscroscope (SEM) make it the ideal tool to use in a study of pore structure. Previous methods of studying pore structure included plastic casts of pore space and optical microscopy.l-7 There is now available a new method to observe three-dimensional flow channels in reservoir rock: a scanning electron microscope having variable magnification from X20 to X20,000 and approximately 1000 times the depth of focus of the conventional light microscopes. This microscope also can obtain stereoscopic images and can measure and diagram flow channels so that it is possible to construct a network of tubes that will model consolidated reservoir rock. THEORY OF THE SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPE The scanning electron microscope (SEM) functions by projecting a beam of electrons through magnetic focusing lenses at a specimen and recording secondary electrons excited by the primary beam. The amount of secondary electron emission portrays the topography of the specimen because more secondary electrons are emitted from high points than from low points. Two Opposed Interpretations of the Tonopuh Structure.—The important geological publications concerning the Tonopah min-ing-district are those of Spurrl aud of Burgess.² In these publications are presented fundamental differences of interpretation, which are the more interesting because both authorities have had ample opportunity for observation, and because both are geologists of proved ability. I was vastly puzzled to know which had the better of it, and in order that I might reach a conclusion in my own mind, I recently spent some time in the district going over the physical evidence. Surprising as it may seem, this evidence looks conclusive. A review of it will, I believe, be of interest to those who are familiar with the previous publications. The general geological features of Tonopah are shown in Fig. 1, and the differences of interpretation referred to are outlined in the accompanying notes. Brieflyj Burgees regards the various rocks as flows, lying in the order of their deposition. Spurr regards them in part as flows, and in part as flat-lying intrusives. The disagreement, then, concerns the rocks regarded on the one hand as intrusives, and, on the other hand, as flows. These rocks are chiefly the so-called calcitic andesitc, the upper rhyolite, and the lower rhyolite. The resistivity, temperature coefficient of resistance, and absolute thermoelectric properties of some binary terminal solid solutions of silver were determined. Equations are given which permit the calculation of these properties. CONSIDERABLE work has been done on the constitution and electrical conductivity of binary alloys of silver.1-l2 Some of these alloy studies are apparently complicated by doubtful chemical analyses. In some cases the limits of solid solubility are questionable. Those references which present electrical properties of binary silver alloys usually give just one particular set of characteristics such as conductivity (or resistivity). As a means of checking and extending this earlier work, an investigation was undertaken to describe and calculate the resistivity, temperature coefficient of resistance, and thermoelectric power of binary terminal solid solutions of silver. PREPARATION OF ALLOYS All of the alloys were made with silver containing less than 0.014 pet (by weight) of impurities. These materials were carefully weighed out into 225-g heats and melted in a high-frequency induction furnace. The indium, tin, and antimony systems were melted in Al2O3 crucibles, under a boric anhydride cover, and poured into split graphite finger molds. The aluminum, germanium, arsenic, lead, and bismuth alloys were melted in machined graphite crucibles, and they were also covered with boric anhydride and poured into split graphite finger molds. With the increasing industrial use of the method of transporting solids by fluids through pipes, a better understanding of the basic mechanics of a solid-liquid pipe flow system is essential. In this study the phenomenon of incipient motion of solid particles resting in a sediment bed on the bottom of a pipe is investigated. Since a system would fail to operate at the designed solid-liquid flow condition if it was not capable of operating through the transient initial flow phase, information concerning the starting transient is of great interest. An objective definition of incipient particle motion, derived from energy considerations, is first proposed. Using this the critical state is defined to describe the flow condition during which a solid particle can at least temporarily escape the sediment bed and move in the liquid. Postulated also in this study is that the condition of incipient motion can be reasonably well predicted by a consideration of particle equilibrium in a direction normal to the pipe axis. The incipient condition is considered to occur at the instant the force between the bed and the particle, normal to the pipe axis, is zero. Experimental measurements of incipient conditions are obtained for water flowing through a horizontal pipe with sand sediment beds of different thickness. These are compared to predicted values with good agreement.
