HAVING been in the management of a company which has been exploring with a diamond drill during the past year in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, with a view to finding workable anthracite coal of a better quality than has been hitherto found, I have collected a certain amount of material which seems to have some scientific interest (though in this respect it is unfortunately incomplete), as well as a possible value to any one who may be tempted to follow ant a similar line of investigation. Pilot-plant and laboratory tests were made on blends of steel plant flue dust and portland cement to determine whether the flue dust could be pelletized for use as a source of iron in dry process cement manufacture. Strength and setting time results showed that an acceptable agglomerate can be made with a Type II portland cement binder. Abrasion-resistant and well-sized pellets were made in a horizontal drum, using a simulated closed circuit, with a binder content of 7.5% and a moisture content below 15%. Pellet quality was found to be relatively insensitive to changes in binder concentration above 5%. Simulations of stockpiling and weathering indicate that little difficulty would be encountered with use of the flue dust pellets in cement plants.

Spectral reflectance data in the wavelength region of 0.45 to 2.4 µm have been obtained for various rock types and different forms of natural vegetation by means of JPL's portable field reflectance spectrometer. Computer analysis of these data has demonstrated the importance of obtaining remotely sensed spectral data beyond the wave- length region sensed by Landsat. Computer processing techniques have been developed and used for the analysis of these data and their application to a variety of geologic problems.

It is obvious that mining has been influenced to a high degree by political and economic events, many of which are of such a nature that the mining industry has relatively little influence in shaping them. I cannot present too optimistic a picture for the immediate future, although I feel that from the long-range standpoint one need not be pessimistic about the future of the mining industry. Slip on (11221 planes, which do not contain a close-packed direction, has been identified on crystals strained at —190°C. Evidence is also presented to show that (1071) pyramidal slip is a mode of deformation at 25ºC in a limited orientation range. Sublevel caving techniques at Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB) in Sweden have undergone significant modification over the years as management strives to maintain mine viability amidst rising costs and erratic iron ore prices. LKAB, which is 96% state-owned, is Sweden&apos;s principal iron ore producer and operates three iron mines north of the Arctic Circle. By far, the largest of LKAB operations is the Kiirunavaara (Kiruna) underground iron mine which extracts an estimated 30 million t/y of ore, Other iron mines include the Malmberget underground nine, rated at 12 million t/y of ore, and the Svappavaara open-pit mine, rated at about 4.5 million t/y. Mined ores from Kiirunavaara and Svappavaara are shipped by rail to the northwestern harbor of Narvik, while Malmberget ores are sent to Lulea, located to the southeast. LKAB iron ores are marketed by Malmexport AB, which is owned jointly by LKAB and Granges, Sweden&apos;s base metal producer.

Environmental constraints can both delay and raise the cost of a major plant addition, often requiring a complete reevaluation of the plant site and the proposed project. In this case history, steps are presented which were followed in applying for environmental permits for a major addition to a lime plant. Methods are described for determining expected emission increases and for selecting the best control technology for each source. The description progresses through pre-application conferences with control agencies, the formal application procedure, computer modeling the air quality impact, and the methods followed in obtaining a favorable determination.

Weston Portable Electrodynamometer The Weston Electrical Instrument Co. of Newark, N. J., believes that problems hitherto considered impossible of solution in the designing of portable electrodynamometers have been solved in its new models. The voltmeter, Model 341, is an instrument&apos; of precision adapted to use on alterating- or direct-current circuits, guaranteed to an accuracy of 0.25 per cent. full-scale value either on direct or alternating-current circuits of any frequency to 133 cycles per second and commercial frequencies even as high as 500 cycles per second with very slight error. The polyphase electrodynamometer, Model 329, is accurate to 0.5 per cent. under the same conditions.; Double ranges are furnished in all instruments of this model. All current ranges can be used for 100 per cent. overload indefinitely without introducing error in Models 310 and 329.

A survey of literature published in the U.S. on grouting indicates that most such work has been done to stop water flow in mines and for stabilizing foundations of various man-made structures. Apparently San Manuel is one of the first mines in this country to use grout extensively underground for the strengthening and stabilizing of ground about drifts, shafts, and stations.

The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M., except on holidays. It contains about 70,000 volumes and 90,000 pamphlets, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of - scientific and technical societies members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend a portion of their time &apos;in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library, through its Library Service Bureau, can render - valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive especial attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and photographic copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish genera1 information on the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape.

In the United States, the consumption of lignite and subbituminous coals is increasing. A variety of energy-oriented companies have leased large blocks of reserves, new large power plants are in operation and being constructed, and new producing mines are being developed. The Bureau of Mines has maintained an active interest in the utilization of low-rank coals for many years. In 1951, with the completion of the Bureau&apos;s Grand Forks Coal Research Laboratory, an organizational unit was established for studies in lignite preparation. Since that time, numerous investigations have been completed. This research has dealt almost exclusively with lignite, but since subbituminous coals have many similar characteristics, the findings can often be applied to both types of coal.

THERE are two general classes of problems in connection with electric furnaces. First, those relating to the best utilization of the electrical power inside the furnace; second, those connected with the bringing of the electrical power to the point where it is to be utilized. Referring particularly to the latter class of problems, many calculations have been made, covering a wide variety of furnaces, to check the electrical capacity and power factor found from test. The following analysis, made for the purpose of determining the maximum capacity and approximate performance of a new furnace, to operate at 160 volts on a 60-cycle circuit, may be of interest. The first characteristic necessary to determine is the inductance, since this is the factor that limits the amount of power which can be put into the furnace. It is well-known1-4 that Fe-Si alloys from approximately 9 to 27 at. pct Si show an ordered structure of the Fe3Si type at room temperature. Recently Meinhardt and Krisement,&apos; through an investigation of Fe-Si alloys at room temperature by neutron diffraction, discovered that at 10.8 at. pct Si ordering of the FeSi type occurs while above this composition the normal Fe3Si-type superstructure appears. This FeSi type of ordering was also found by Davies8 as indicated by X-ray diffraction measurements on an Fe-8.7 at. pct Si alloy. Meinhardt and Krisement7 extended their neutron-diffraction work and determined the phase-boundary temperatures for both FeSi- and Fe3Si-type ordering. An approach to treating flow through fractured rocks is presented which involves (1) determining statistical distributions for fracture area, density, orientation, and aperture from field data, (2) computer generation of fracture systems from the statistical distributions, and (3) analysis of the permeability and porosity of the fracture systems. The fracture density and orientation data my come from core logging or mapping. The hydraulically appropriate apertures and areas of the fractures come from transient flow analyses of single fracture well tests. These tests my also yield information on fracture deformability. Analysis of flow through computer generated fracture systems shows that an equivalent porous medium permeability can be defined for some fracture systems if a large number of fractures is taken into account.

The pressures of urbanization are forcing producers of construction minerals either to transport their product greater distances or find new mineral sources. In areas with significant urban development near the coastal zone, offshore resources may prove to be an economically attractive alternative source. This paper addresses the economic viability of offshore mining of fine mineral aggregate. It proposes a model using a mathematical programming formulation based upon past research on both the onshore construction aggregate industry and the coal industry. The model is then used to assess offshore mining economics in the greater New York metropolitan area. Results show that in this region total consumer cost would be reduced by offshore mining of fine aggregate. In addition, increasing economies of scale could be realized by progressively larger mining operations. The distribution of these savings is also discussed.

Major parameters relating to the operating of the conventional calcine-charged reverberatory f&apos;ce process such as distribution coefficients of major elements among slag, matte, blister, and gases, temperatures and weights of intermediates, and heat losses of furnaces were measured and determined. A computer program to estimate heat and material balances at the process was prepared utilizing these data, showing a good agreement with actual results.

At the meeting of the Istitote in New York, in February, 1880," I described a process of determining sulphur iu metallic allphides, with especial reference to the determination of pyrites in coal. The procem, as then described, is as follows: A solution of sodium hydrate, of 1.25 specific gravity, is saturated with bromine. If an excess of bromiue is used it must be neutralized by the addition of a little more sodium hydrate. The pulverized mineral or coal is moistened with 25 c.e. of this solution autl heated, then hydrochloric acid is added cautiously to just acid reaction. One executive writing on capital equipment re- placement stated: "We keep extremely close watch over repair costs and when we reach the point of uneconomical operation, we replace the machine." This, of course, is most elementary, but a very basic premise. However, it seems advisable to set forth several equally obvious principles, so that all discussion will start from the same point. The subject is intended to deal with the point of uneconomical operation due to high operating costs in general and high repair costs in particular. This is not concerned with a similar problem of high costs because of an insufficient number of machines, be they trucks, shovels, or dozers.
