Within the last century, and largely during the latter half of it, the increase of our knowledge of the development of man, both in his search for a livelihood and for power, and in the growth of his reason and conscience, has been greater than all we had known before. The great interest in all kinds of archaeological work and the many excavations made of buried and long forgotten places has put at our disposal historical records not available, and in many cases not known before, and a study of these and other records of human progress from paleontological and geological sources has given us a much broader view of what we call "civilization" than was possible even a short time ago. The old idea that men were created with fully developed minds, speech and reason has yielded to the view that in the upward progress of the human race the development of the mind and reason has been a comparatively recent occurrence, as we think of the half million, and probably more, years that have passed since our earliest records of man were made. In the course of the persistent and rapid advance of our country towards the goal she has set for herself, of commercial and manufacturing supremacy, there stand out certain periods or cycles of prosperity or depression, succeeding one another with a comparative regularity as to their ultimate trend, but of varying lengths and intensities. I might compare this course to that of a railroad between two points at different levels, with intervening mountain ranges and valleys, the up-grades climbing towards the final upper terminal of prosperity, while the down-grades retard the ascent, and tend to return to the valleys below. Just at the present time we are evidently at the bottom of one of these valleys, and, before starting to climb the next divide, it may be prudent for us to look into the condition of our rolling-stock, and especially into that of our brakes, and see what the experience of our downward journey has taught us, and whether we are properly equipped for the new upward advance which now lies before us. Probably no previous period of the same duration has produced in all branches of mining and metallurgy improvements SO many and so various as have the last ten or twelve years. The Project Independence Evaluation System (PIES) is a complex evaluation, forecasting, and analysis system which represents the U.S. energy production, conversion, transportation and consumption activities. The system includes various models: An econometrically estimated energy demand model, used to evaluate the final demand functions for energy commodities ; A collection of supply models, used to evaluate the cost curves or supply curves for domestic crude oil, natural gas, coal ; An integrating model used to describe energy conversion and transportation activities and to calculate prices which equate energy supply and demand in each market. PIES has been used to generate conditional forecasts of the 1980, 1985, and 1990 states of the energy system--forecasts conditional upon the world oil prices, the energy policy environment, and other uncertainties. Scenarios have been structured to separately examine conservation initiatives, domestic energy supply enhancements, an extensive electrification strategy, and oil and natural gas well -head price regulation. This paper presents the basic model, discusses its use for examining policy options, and describes several forecast results. The paper draws heavily upon work completed for the 1976 National Energy Outlook, published by the Federal Energy Administration.

Geological investigation and research have contributed greatly in making industrial minerals the basis of an important industry in the state. North Carolina contains a wide variety of industrial minerals and rock. Mica, feldspar, kaolin, halloysite, talc, pyrophyllite, silli-manite, and spodumene are used to illustrate the progress being made. IN a previous paper1 an attempt was made to indicate the importance of industrial minerals in North Carolina and the wide variety of such materials present. The present paper is concerned with geological investigation and research which have made industrial minerals the basis of an important industry in the state. Geological mapping has gone through three stages in North Carolina during the present century. The first stage is represented by excellent reports of which Corundum and the Peridotites of Western North Carolina,2 Volume I, now a classic, is representative. In this report, a geologic map of the western third of the state is shown on a scale of 10 miles to the inch. The next stage is represented by folios" of the U. S. Geological Survey published between 1902 and 1932. Most of these contained 30 min quadrangle maps on a scale of 2 miles to the inch. The third step is represented by reports prepared during the past 10 years which contain geological maps4 on scales varying from 500 ft to 1 mile to the inch, while many mine maps have been prepared on scales varying from 20 to 150 ft to the inch. As the scale on which geological mapping has been done has decreased, the amount of information secured has increased. United Engineering Trustees, Inc. When Mr. Carnegie made his gift which made possible a home for the engineering societies, a separate corporation was organized to act as a holding company and to manage the common property. This was long known as the United Engineering Society but the name has now been changed to one which more nearly reflects the real function of the corporation. It holds title to the Engineering Societies Building and to various funds placed in its charge and is managed by a Board of Trustees of which three are chosen by each of the four societies, American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers and American Society of Civil Engineers, which own equal and undivided interests in the property. The land and building cost two million dollars. The interest of each of the Founders societies, aside from especial trust funds, is now valued at $493,352. The A. I. M. E. trustees are Arthur S. Dwight, J. V. N. Derr and George D. Barron. The President of the Board is Francis Lee Stuart and the Secretary, Alfred D. Flinn.

The paper relates to the laboratory and pilot plant studies that have been carried out by Sherritt Gordon Mines Ltd., Metallurgical Research Div., in developing the ammonia pressure leach process for extracting copper, nickel, cobalt, and sulphur from high grade nickel concentrate produced from Lynn Lake ores, and describes in some detail the chemistry of the process. IT is well known'.' 2 that copper, nickel, cobalt, zinc, ferrous iron, and a number of other metals combine with ammonia in aqueous solution to form complex ions of the form [Me(NH,)x]"+. The stability and solubility of these ions depend on the concentration of the metal ion in solution, on the amount of NH, present, and on the amount and type of anions present, e.g., OH-, C0;-, NO,, C1-, SO;-. If ammonia is partially or completely removed from such solutions, for example by boiling, the soluble ammines tend to decompose and the metals precipitate as basic salts. These properties of metal ammines have found practical application in the commercial recovery of copper, nickel, and cobalt from a variety of ores. In an operation formerly conducted at Kennecott"" the mill tailing containing 0.80 pct Cu as copper carbonate was leached by percolation with an ammonia-ammonium carbonate solution to dissolve the copper as the ammine. At Calumet and Hecla0-" With a mill tailing containing about 0.4 pct Cu as metallic copper, it has been found necessary to aerate the ammonia-ammonium carbonate leach solutions between stages to oxidize the solubilized copper. At Nicarol"-" where nickel and cobalt occur as oxides and silicates which are not soluble in ammonia, the ore is heated to decompose silicates and to selectively reduce the nickel and cobalt to metal, leaving the iron as Fe,O,, and is then leached with ammonia-ammonium carbonate solution accompanied by aeration to dissolve nickel and cobalt as ammines. In each of these leaching operations, the anion present is CO, and the metals can be precipitated from the leach solution as oxide (copper) or hydroxide and carbonate (nickel and cobalt) by boil- ing off NH, and C02 both of which are recycled to treat a subsequent ore charge. The products-—oxide, hydroxide, or carbonate—can be treated by conventional smelting, calcining, or electrolytic methods to convert them to refined metals. Thus the procedures mentioned utilize the properties of the ammines to extract copper, nickel, and cobalt from nonsulphide ores and separate them from the leach solutions. These processes have the advantage that they can be carried out in closed vessels at atmospheric pressure, that the leaching solutions are specific for the desired metals, that the metals can be recovered as relatively pure compounds by the boiling operation, and that the NH, and CO, can be recycled. Also, as the leach solutions after boiling and filtration are substantially free of metals, NH,, and CO,, they can be discarded, thus facilitating the control of the water balance in the leaching circuit. When, as is the case with Sherritt Gordon concentrates, sulphides are treated with ammonia solution in the presence of oxygen, the leach solution contains SO,--, and an entirely different set of conditions is encountered. The ammine sulphates (of nickel, for example) are more soluble than the carbonates and can be only partially decomposed by boiling. The SO, and NH, in the solutions can not be recovered by boiling. Thus, despite the more favorable leaching conditions resulting from high solubility of the ammine sulphates, the recovery of metals, NH,, and SO, from the solutions must be effected by other means. Sherritt Gordon Nickel Concentrate Treatment The Ni-Cu-Co flotation concentrate produced at Lynn Lake'" contains 12 to 16 pct Ni, 1 to 2 pct Cu, 0.2 to 0.5 pct Co, 33 to 40 pct Fe, 28 to 34 pct S, 8 to 20 pct insoluble, and less than 0.02 oz per ton precious metals. The nickel is present chiefly as pentlandite, the copper as chalcopyrite, and the iron as pyrrhotite and pyrite. Most of the cobalt is thought to be present in pentlandite, although it is known that a small amount occurs as Co-Ni-pyrite.

Some of the significant facts that will affect the supply and demand for metals during the next few decades are given in this presentation. This is important because the only hope for intelligent guidance of the national destiny depends upon presenting a consistent and accurate picture of basic problems. The metals problems now fomenting are only slightly less important than those precipitating the energy crisis. Admittedly, it is difficult to generate serious thinking on this subject when the world is enjoying easy access to all metals at modest prices. This is possible because of the current world capacity to over-produce, and United States credit standing, at least up to now, has permitted buying freely on world markets. Although both these vital conditions are subject to change, there is little doubt that if the U.S. financial house is kept in order, we can muddle along for a while on a generally expanding, metal-based economy. But should our credit standing be permitted to collapse, or should there be a tightening of world supplies of metals, the nation would immediately find itself in trouble. Unfortunately, clear signals indicate that both of these conditions are threatening. The metal age started many centuries ago, and with the exception of the noble metals, barely a dent was made in world reserves until the present century. Then, as a result of the pioneering ideas of D. C. Jackling and Paul Gemmel, and the willingness of the McNeals, Penroses and Guggenheims to back ideas with money, a virtual explosion of metal production was propagated throughout the world. It is important to examine the causes of this expansion to determine whether it is a trend that may be sustained or whether it is anomalous and therefore attributable to circumstances not likely to be repeated or continued. This period of plenty is a once only phenomenon. Vast metal resources have been sitting around here for eons, while the world was unaware of or unconcerned with their existence. But when population began to grow exponentially, and ways were discovered to use metals to develop machines to do the work of men and animals, the exploitation of raw materials increased at a staggering rate. And now the realization is dawning that minerals are a wasting asset and are beginning to present supply problems that should begin to be of concern. Two main factors have caused this condition; One is the population growth, and the other is the expanding demand for irreplaceable raw materials as nations become more developed. A group of systems analysts, at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in a book Limits of Growth, has warned that at present rates of population growth and resource consumption together with environmental constraints, a point will be reached within 100 years when the world population will become totally incapable of supporting itself. The authors conclude that this end result could be avoided if a planned equilibrium could be established at a lower rate of population growth and resource consumption. Fortunately, there is evidence that the population problem is moderating. The growth rate in the U.S. has decreased from 2.3% per year in 1900 to 1.1% in 1970. But, even at the lower rate, population will double in 70 years. The world rate is greater, and if it continues, world population will rise from 3.5 billion to nearly 10 billion in 50 years. All of these projections are questionable because the dangers of growing population are now being recognized. A marked decrease in growth rate has been noted in the more developed countries-in fact, it was zero in the U.S. in 1972. The other factor affecting consumption of raw materials is the increase in per capita use of most items as individuals become more affluent. Many economists believe that developing countries such as China and India represent a vast future potential market; but there are others, with whom the author agrees, who believe over-population tends to stagnate development. Nevertheless, it is a fact that vigorously developing societies increase consumption at a rate far above their population growth rate.

THE heats of formation at 273°K of the compounds InBi, In2Bi, and TIBi2 have been determined by metal solution calorimetry with bismuth as solvent. The published information on the thermody-namic properties of these compounds is limited. The structure of the compound InBi (mp, 383°K) is tetragonal of the PbO (B10) type.1 The compounds In2Bi (mp, 362°K) and TIBi2 (mp of highest-melting composition, 486°K) are now believed to have structures of the NizIn (B8) type273 and not the A1B2 (C32) structures reported earlier.4, 5 The compounds In2Bi and TIBi2 have limited homogeneity ranges at room temperature, while the compound InBi has no detectable homogeneity range.' Samples of the compounds were prepared from 99.99 pet Bi (Mallinckrodt Chemical Works), 99.999 pet in (American Smelting and Refining Co.), and 99.99 pet Tl (Amend Drug and Chemical Co.) by melting the components in sealed, evacuated Vycor tubes. The compounds InBi and in2Bi were of the stoichiometric compositions. The compound TIBi2 contained 40 pet T1; this composition was chosen because at room temperature the alloy of stoichiometric composition does not lie within the homogeneity range.' The melts were held approximately 50°C above the liquidus for 8 hr and then quenched into iced brine. The samples were homogenized for 48 hr at temperatures 20°C below the temperature of complete solidification. Metallographic examination of sections taken from the center and the ends of the ingots did not reveal second phases or segregation . The heats of formation were determined as the difference in the heat effects on solution of a compound and of a mechanical mixture of its components added from the reference temperature of 273°K to liquid bismuth at 623°K. The details of the calori-metric procedure and method of calculation have been described elsewhere? The calorimeter was calibrated by adding bismuth at 273°K to the bismuth bath at 623°K. The calculated values of the heats of formation of the compounds, listed in Table I, are based on a value of 4.96 keal per g-atom for the difference between the heat contents of bismuth at 273" and 623oK7 No published values are available for the heats of formation of the compounds InBi and In2Bi. Hultgren et a1.7 have calculated a value of -0.50 i 0.10 keal per g-atom for the heat of formation at 423°K of the compound TIBi2 containing 40 at. pet T1 from heat-content measurements in the range from 398" to 700°K and the heats of formation of the liquid alloy. The difference between this value and the value of -0.66 * 0.01 keal per g-atom at 273°K is too large to be attributed to a difference between the heat capacities of the compound and the components over the temperature range 273o to 423oK7 However, the direct determination of the heat of formation by a calorimetric method should give a more accurate value. The heats of formation at 273°K of the compounds InBi and In2Bi lie on a straight line when plotted as a function of composition, Fig. 1. The compound In2Bi, therefore, appears to be barely stable with respect to its neighboring phases. In order for the free energy vs composition curve to be concave towards the composition axis, the entropy change on formation of In2Bi must be more positive than that on formation of InBi. As the compounds are ordered,2, 3, 8 there is no configurational entropy change on formation. The difference between the entropy changes on formation of the two compounds, therefore, is probably associated with the vibrational entropies. In view of the low heats of formation, the changes in vibrational entropy, due to changes in bond strength on formation of the two compounds, are likely to be small. Owing to the volume contractions on formation of the two compounds,5 the vibrational entropies probably decrease slightly but the decrease of the vibrational entropy of InBi is expected to be larger than that of In2Bi.

Parabolic rate constants were determined for the formation of wiistite by the solid state reaction between magnetite and iron. The reaction was diffusion controlled and inert marker studies indicated that the mass transport through the wiistite layer was accomplished by means of iron migration. Relationships between rate constants and self-diffusivities are discussed. The transport capacity for iron through dense wustite layers was found to be sufficient to carry on reduction, even in gaseous reduction processes. REDUCTION of iron oxides has been the subject of many investigations. Most of the work, however, has been done on rather crude material and there have been difficulties in correlating the data on a quantitative basis. The reverse process of the oxidation of iron has been studied more thoroughly and usually by starting from the pure metal. As a result, the mechanisms of oxidation are now fairly well known.It has generally been found that the oxidation of metals follows the so-called parabolic 1aw;Q hat is, when the oxides are formed as dense layers, their thicknesses are proportional to the square root of the reaction time. This parabolic law follows directly from Fick's first law of diffusion The flux, J, is defined as the quantity of diffusing substance passing per unit time through unit area of a plane at right angles to the direction of diffusion. This flux is proportional to the concentration gradient of the diffusing substance, and the factor D, known as the diffusion coefficient, is introduced as the proportionality factor with dimensions of (length)'/time. If the flux is measured as the increase of thickness of the oxide layer (Ax) per unit time (t) and the assumption is made that the concentrations of the reactants at the phase boundaries of the layer are independent of time, Eq. 1 reduces to Integration of this expression yields the parabolic function ax = k . t. [31 The product of the diffusion coefficient and the concentration difference across the oxide layer is included in the constant k. When iron is exposed to a highly oxidizing atmosphere, the oxide phases are formed normally in a topochemical fashion, i.e., the interfaces between the phases maintain parallel positions to the original surface of the specimen. Above 570°C, the phases are orientated usually in the order of iron, wiistite, magnetite, and hematite, a condition in conformance with the requirements of the Fe-0 system. Below 570°C, the wiistite phase is unstable and has not been found as a normal constituent in the oxidation products of iron. There is a strong probability that continuous layers of the solid oxides are formed as the specific volumes of the phases increase in direct order from iron to hematite.' , ' Regarding mass transport through dense solid oxide layers, Wagner' has postulated that diffusion in oxides generally may be interpreted as migration processes of ions and electrons. There must be normally a concentration gradient across the growing oxide layer for diffusion to occur. This condition requires that there be deviations from the ideal stoi-chiometric composition of the oxide and accordingly deviations from the strict order of an ideal lattice. Such "lattice defects" include interstitial ions, cation and anion vacancies, quasi-free electrons, and electron holes and are decisive for all migration processes.' Cations, anions, and electrons all may have some mobility in the oxides but the movement of one of the particles generally far exceeds that of the others. Previous work', 1,2,7 has shown that during the oxidation of iron the migration through the wiistite layer, and probably also the magnetite layer, is confined to the movement of iron ions. Migration through hematite, however, has been found to take place by oxide ion movement. These behaviors are in direct agreement with the type of vacancies present in the respective oxides. Reduction of Iron Oxides The gaseous reduction of iron oxides, like the oxidation of iron, takes place in a topochemical fashion at distinct interfaces between the appearing phases."-'" Porosities might be expected in these reaction products, since their specific volumes are less than that of the starting material. Frank and van Der Merwe" have shown, however, that it is theoretically possible for nonporous layers to form if the degree of misfit in specific volume is less than about 15 pct. Induction, nuclear and sonic well-logging methods were employed in a Green River formation oil-shale analysis and evaluation study conducted in northeastern Uintah County, Utah. The physical and chemical properties of an oil-shale section, previously cored and assayed by conventional methods, were used to evaluate the response of the various logs. The logging program was designed to measure variable properties of oil shale which relate to oil-yield potential in order that a relationship between assay-oil yield and log-determined properties could be identified, thereby permitting a direct determination of yield potential from logs alone. All of the major oil-shale zones and section ttlarkers are recognizable on the logs used in the study. The relationship between the response of the Density and Sonic logs and the assay-oil yield in gallons per ton was suficient to perinit the derivation of equations expressing the relationships. These equations can be used to determine the potential oil yield in gallons per ton of an oil-shale zone or section. The Neutron log response distinguishes the rich oil-shale intervals from the lean intervals, but does not appear to permit establishment of a quantitative relationship. The Garnma-Ray and Induction logs indicate only a qualitative relationship to oil-shale yields. Logging oil shale by Gamma-Gamrna Density and/ or Sonic logging methods will permit a fast, economical and accurate means of evaluating the potential yield of oil-shale deposits. Considerable sums of money have been allocated to Green River formation oil-shale evaluation during the past years by both private enterprise and Federal and state governments. The result of the work accomplished to date is commendable, but the task of fully exploring and evaluating one of the world's greatest reserves of potential energy for economical exploitation is enormous and much information is still needed. Present methods of evaluation consist primarily of sampling and assaying the oil shale for potential yield. The data received are excellent, but are both costly (inasmuch as it requires funds specifically allocated for the evaluation purpose) and time-consuming (as each representative sample must be assayed in the laboratory by specially trained personnel). At the present time, the Green River formation oil-shale province is one of the most active areas in the Rocky Mountain region for exploratory oil and gas drilling. This activity could play a twofold role and serve the function of spear-heading many oil-shale evaluation programs, as it could provide both cutting samples for assaying, geophysical data and modern well logs. This paper deals with a recent study conducted on Green River formation oil shale in which the application of induction, sonic and nuclear well logs to oil-shale evaluation was tested and proved. THEORY AND DEFINITIONS Oil shale may be described as siliceous marlstone, rich in solid organic matter called "kerogen". Kerogen is only slightly soluble in organic solvents, but it will decompose and yield oil vapors and gas when heated to destructive distillation temperatures at about 800 F. The mineral constituents of Green River formation oil shale are found in essentially uniform proportions with one another. The dominant types are, in the general order of abundance, dolomite, calcite, feldspars and quartz. Kerogen is also essentially uniform in its composition, and is about 80 per cent carbon and 10 per cent hydrogen by weight. The ratio of kerogen to the mineral constituents determines the richness or potential yield of the oil shale. This ratio also determines the total physical and chemical properties of the rock and provides a basis by which oil-shale richness may be determined from well logs. Because Green River formation oil shale was deposited in a lacustrine environment, the lithology is laterally consistent over wide areas. The vertical section consists predominantly of thin bands of alternating rich and lean oil shale which have been described by Bradley' as varves. The varves are occasionally broken by thin bands of volcanic ash and tuff and by zones of lean vugular oil shale. The effect that the thin non-oil shale beds and vugular zones would have on the well log analysis was a prime concern in the study. To cope with this possible problem, the logs used in the study were of two types: (1) logs believed to respond favorably to those properties of oil shale which are dependent upon the kero-gen-to-mineral ratio, these logs being the Gamma-Gamma Density log, the Sonic log and the Neutron log; and (2) logs that would respond to litho-logies and properties within the oil-shale section not associated with yield that might result in anomalous responses by the yield-measuring logs. INTRODUCTION Since the occurrence of the first oil crisis, coun-tries of the world, especially oil-importing countries have made sustained and vigorous efforts to lessen the dependency on oil as a source of energy supply. The adoption of "Principles of Coal Policy" by the IEA Ministerial Governing Board Meeting in May, 1979 was the first formal action taken by major energy consuming countries. At the Venice Summit in June, 1980, it was agreed that production and use of coal should be doubled over the next ten years. In fact, the world coal use in 1980 showed around a 10 percent increase over the previous year. Recently, we have seen an indication that the balance of oil supply and demand in the short term have eased. But I believe that it remains vital that we continue to encourage the development and introduction of alternative energy sources. Because, from the medium and long range viewpoint the recovery of the worldwide economy will lead us to increased oil requirements and thus we will be faced with the cyclical, structural tightening situation between the supply and demand of oil. Moreover, we are still convinced that the constraint of the supply capabilities of the Middle-East nations may be increasing in the long-term, since there still remains political uncertainties among these nations. Consequently, above all, coal is viewed as an alternative energy resource available for immediate expansion of use and is given as high a priority as nuclear power. In Japan, we regard coal as the most reliable alternative energy resource to replace oil. According to the "Alternative Energy Supply Targets" approved by the Cabinet in November, 1980, the level of coal imports is estimated to approximately double by 1990, while our domestic coal production will remain nearly at the same level. The transition from oil to coal is found in the recent import levels of coal---73 mil¬lion tons in 1980, a 23 percent increase over the 59 million tons imported in 1979. There was an upsurge in steaming coal imports, reflecting the transition in feedstocks---7.2 million tons in 1980, four times over the previous year's amount. Henceforth, from the medium to long range view, the demand for coal, especially that of steaming coal is forecast to continue to grow. The timely expansion of supply capabilities is our utmost concern and should be one of the most significant goals of our comprehensive policy. The Overseas Coal Investigative Committee, a privately organized advisory panel to the Director-General of the Natural Resources and Energy Agency of the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), investigated means to secure a stable supply of overseas coal. The panel presented its interim proposals in August, 1981, recommending the diversification of coal import sources, extensive use of low rank coal, as well as enhanced international cooperation between coal producing and importing countries. THE CONTENTS OF THE COMMITTEE'S REPORT Four Points for Major Consideration In order to ensure a stable supply of overseas coal, Japan needs adequate policy measures consistent with the characteristics of coal resources and environmental requirements, giving consideration to Japan's status and the role she is expected to play in the areas. From the above, great importance should be attached to the following four points: All the components of the "Coal Chain" (Namely, the development of mine sites, construction of railroads, port loading facilities, coal shipping vessels, port receiving facilities, including coal centers and international transport facilities etc.) should be reviewed and reformed with steps taken to assure efficiency consistent with the entire coal chain system. The complete formation of a coal chain system requires such lengthy lead times and huge amounts of investment that necessary measures should be undertaken well in advance utilizing long-range projections of future demands and various economic surveys. Policy planning should be conducted taking into account of harmonizing stability and economics of the supply structure. For ensuring the long-term stability and expansion of the coal trade, international cooperation on a bilateral and multi-national basis should be encouraged. Mutual understanding and close relationships are essential to facilitate the formation of the supply system and to promote the extensive use of coal. Direction and Problems Related to Supply Stability Expansion of Supply Capabilities. World coal imports in 1979 amounted to 229 million tons, of which Japan's share amounted to 59 million tons, or one fourth of the entire amount. The imports of European and Asian countries accounted for 83 million tons and 7 million tons respectively. According to the examination of the Investigative Committee, Japan's coal requirement is estimated to be between 140-150 million tons by 1990, nearly the same level as announced in the Provisional Long-Term Energy Supply and Demand Outlook in 1979. This fore¬cast is-to be revised in April, 1982. Japan's demand is expected to be met through fiscal 1985; however, by 1990, the supply is estimated to fall short of demand, particulary, in the field of steaming coal. A noticeable decrease in activity characterized the year 1938 in the West Texas area. The total number of wells completed dropped to 2045 for 19381 as compared with 2806 completions in 1937,l a decline of 27.12 per cent. This trend contrasts the sharp increase of 76.29 per cent in completions in 1937 over the 1936 total. Of 2045 well completions during 1938,' 1788 were oil wellsll 16 were gas producers1 and 241 were listed as failures.' During 1938 the ratio of dry holes drilled to oil-producing or gas-producing wells completed was one dry hole to each 7.48 oil wells, which compares with one dry hole drilled to each 7.477 oil wells in 1937. Nearly 200 wells drilled during 1938 in West Texas were either wildcat or partly wildcat wells, an increase of about 25 over the year 1937, when approximately 175 wells drilled were so classified. The 200 exploratory wells drilled represent about 10 per cent of the total number of wells completed. West Texas produced 71,257,541 bbl.1 of oil in 1938 as compared with 75,743,000 bb1.2 of oil in 1937, a decrease of 4,485,459 bbl., or a 5.92 per cent decline. By comparison, West Texas produced 22.36 per cent more oil in 1937 than during 1936. In December 1938, the 9247 producing oil wells in West Texas1 averaged 22.08 bbl. per day per well as compared with December 1937, when 7571 wells1 produced an average of 25.18 bbl. per day per well, or a decline in daily well average of 12.32 per cent. Discoveries No outstanding new fields were discovered in West Texas during 1938, in spite of continued, active wildcatting operations. Several new oil-producing areas were, found, however, the value of which is still unknown.

In 1866, Thomas Graham1 called attention to the volume of gases, three times the volume of the sample, evolved from a meteoric iron heated in an evacuated porcelain tube. From that time to this the occurrence and significance of gases in metals have been the subject of investigation by many workers, among whom Sieverts,2 Iwasé3 and 0. W. Ellis4 stand preeminent. Sieverts and Iwasé concerned themselves with the solubility of a number of gases in metals in the liquid and solid states. They determined the absorption coefficients of these gases, and in all cases found a sharp change in solubility at the melting point of the metals. Ellis analyzed the gases evolved by solidifying copper and those occluded by the solidified metal. Lobley and Jepson5 endeavored to determine the effects of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and nitrogen on the porosity of copper that was allowed to solidify in the presence of each gas after 30 min. exposure to it in the

This paper presents a scheme for determination of precision for the various steps in coal sampling, sample preparation, and analysis. It also gives resulting data on 100 American coals from various coal fields covering all ranks from lignite to low-volatile bituminous. The variances of the various steps of the process are studied as a function of the coal preparation, the top size of coal as sampled, and the ash content. To understand the variables that control the overall precision of coal sampling, sample reduction and analysis, there is need for measurement of the variances due to successive steps of the process. The purpose of the present paper is to study these variances as a function of the coal preparation, the top size of the coal as sampled, and the ash content. The sampling data included are from 100 individual preparation plants from various coal fields in the United States and cover all ranks of coal from lignite to low-volatile bituminous; various types of preparation; deep, strip and auger mines; and, in many instances, mixtures from two or more coal beds or types of mines. The collection of data is continuing, but sufficient work has been done to draw some important conclusions. Since the work was done in conjunction with the Bureau of Mines sampling of coal, the time that could be spent at any one preparation plant was limited. This, in turn, limited the number of samples that could be taken for each coal. For this reason, the results from various plants were pooled in blocks. Two major blocking categories were "raw" and "washed!' The raw coals had no preparation other than crushing and/or screening. PREVIOUS investigations on the temperature dependence of rolling texture transition in high-purity silver1'2 and in electrolytic copperS have shown that a brass-type texture is favored at low rolling tem- peratures, whereas a copper-type texture is favored at high rolling temperatures. The transition takes place gradually as a function of the temperature of deformation, and a general correlation between texture transition and stacking-fault frequency or probability exists—a copper-type texture is associated with low stacking-fault frequencies, and a brass-type texture is associated with high stacking-fault frequencies. If the stacking-fault energy is calculated from the stacking-fault frequency and the dislocation density of the specimen, one finds that with low stacking-fault energies a brass-type texture will be developed, and that with high stacking-fault energies the texture will be of the copper-type. These findings are consistent with the idea that the formation of rolling textures in fcc metals may depend on their stacking-fault energy, although results of such nature always involve the ambiguity that a change in the density (or width) of stacking faults produced by deformation at different temperatures may be actually due to a variation in the stress, rather than due to a change in the specific stacking-fault energy per se. It has also been shown that the type of annealing texture depends entirely on the deformation texture. From a copper-type rolling texture, a strong cube texture will be formed upon recrystallization, whereas from a brass-type rolling texture, the annealing texture will be quite different from the cube orientation. IT is generally recognized that the .addition of limited small amounts of various lead salts may aid the extracting power of the mill cyanide solution in the dissolution of silver from ores and in some cases may aid in the treatment of gold ores. Excess soluble lead compounds retard the dissolution of precious metals by the usual mill cyanide solution. Another phase of cyanidation is the use of the zinc-lead couple as an aid to better precipitation of gold and silver from solution containing a low percentage of cyanide. The chemistry of the use of lead salts in cyanidation has been dis-cussed by Clennell;1 the addition of lead salts in various cyanide mills is recorded by von Bernewitz;2 and the reasons for the use of lead salts in cyanidation have been explained by Clevenger.3 This paper deals with the adaptation of cyanidation to a different condition, in which the presence of lead minerals in a gold ore that is refractory to direct cyanidation complicates the treatment. If free gold is roasted in the presence of sulfur and lead salts, or if pyritic gold ores containing even a small percentage of lead minerals are roasted to free the gold from the pyrite, lead compounds coat the gold particles enough to make them almost insoluble in the usual mill cyanide solution contain-ing lime for protective alkalinity. Also, the lead compounds remaining in the calcine are slightly soluble in the mill solutions and such dissolved lead may retard the dissolution of the gold by the removal of oxygen or

THE following notes were taken on a trip through northern Korea in the fall of 1910. We started with about 19 Korean ponies, and as many Koreans, from Shin Anju, on the railway from Seoul to Antung. We passed through the ancient walled city of Anju, and thence up the valley of the Anju river. We then crossed over to the north into the Kalsan drainage, thence over another divide to the Chasung river, and finally reached the old Korean copper-smelting camp of Tong Jom-in all a distance by trail of about 200 miles. The return trip was made with ponies to Mampochin on the Yalu river, and thence down the river in a junk to Antung. The route of travel is shown on the sketch map, Fig. 1.

THIS work was undertaken with the object of collecting plant data on rod milling, making laboratory tests on representative samples of the various ores, and arriving at a basis for comparing the relative efficiencies of different mills operating on widely different materials and under varying conditions. These efficiencies consider only power consumption and do not include the other elements of operating costs. The over-all economic efficiency may be quite different from the consumption efficiencies with which this paper is concerned. It is hoped that these collected data will be of value in indicating the most favorable conditions of rod-mill operation. Operating-plant data on 14 different installations from 11 plants throughout the United States and Canada were collected, and laboratory tests were made on samples of these ores. The plant rod mills were all operated wet, and either in open circuit or with circulating loads so small as to be negligible. Data were obtained on one roll-crushing operation at the Utah Copper Co., for comparison. The rolls were operated wet in closed circuit with 10-mesh vibrating screens, and with a high circulating load averaging about 600 pct. This particular roll operation can be considered as a model of efficiency. The collected plant data are necessarily incomplete in some instances. Each ore was assigned a code number, and the name and location corresponding to the code number are listed in Table I when permitted. [ ] The power data in every instance refer to motor input. Net power was reported by the operator for samples I-39 and I-45, and this was increased by 20 pct to compensate for motor losses and power factor. In the study of the coals of Illinois now being carried on by the State Geological Survey, an attempt is being made to determine the most satisfactory basis of comparison between different coals. The following discussion is based upon work done for the Survey in the laboratories of the State University and under the general direction of Prof. S. W. Parr. "Pure coal" has been defined by Mr. A. Bementl as ash- and moisture-free coal, and the use of this pure coal" as a basis for comparing different bituminous coals has lately been much discussed among engineers in the middle West. By some the B.t.u. of the pure coal is being used to check calorimetric results, and to calculate the calorific value of different coal-samples from the same seam, for which purposes it is necessary to assume—first, that the composition and calorific value of pure coal from different parts of the same coal-seam are uniform, and, second, that these values remain constant after the coal is mined, both of which assumptions there are reasons to believe are inconsistent with the facts. Certain variables are included in pure coal, as ordinarily defined, and disregard of them may lead to serious error. In any event, where delicate shades of difference are involved, no sure interpretation of results car] be made, unless these variables be eliminated. As a basis of comparison between coals, ash- and moisture-free coal is much to be preferred to " dry coal," and still more is it to be preferred to moist coal," as ordinarily reported in analyses.
