MINE FIRES, in the Butte District, have been a source of trouble and expense for the past thirty years, for while the actual fire area in most of the mines has been comparatively small, the handling of the gas has generally been a much larger problem than the actual putting out of the fire. The chief causes of these fires have been: Defective electrical equipment, incendiarism or carelessness, and spontaneous combustion. While fires from the first two causes have been numerous, they have generally been discovered and extinguished before they became very serious. Spontaneous combustion has been the cause of most of the large fires. Sufficient heat has been generated by ground movement, high rock temperatures, and decomposition to set fire to inflammable materials (tarred ropes, canvas, dry timber, manure, and hay) left in the gobs some years ago. Also, the heat resulting from the oxidation of the fine broken sulfide ore is sometimes sufficient to set fire to the timbers. In 1906, a fire was discovered on the 1100-ft. level of the Minnie Healy mine about 400 ft. (122 m.) west of the Minnie Healy shaft, which presumably originated, in one of the upper levels, from spontaneous combustion. The fire was walled off by concrete bulkheads and a pillar of ground 100 ft. (30 m.) thick was left below and mining resumed underneath. During subsequent operations, this pillar became cracked and broken and the fire passed into the new workings. It travelled downward and spread rapidly until, in 1917, it had become necessary to wall off portions of the Tramway, Leonard, and West Colusa mines on the 1300, 1400, 1500, 1600, 1800, 1900, and 2000-ft. levels, and the top of the 2200-ft. raises were sealed. The fire area now consists roughly of a block 1000 by 1200 ft. and from the 600-ft. to the 2200-ft. level. This block is composed largely of a series of parallel northwest-southeast nearly vertical veins and stringers that form a large orebody, with no well-defined walls but badly fractured and faulted, and known locally as "Horsetail Ore." These veins, or orebodies, are mined by the square-set or the rill method.

The investigation of the phase relations of high-purity aluminum-base alloys is a part of the fundamental research program of the laboratories of the Aluminum Company of America. The results of a number of binary and ternary systems have previously been published in the Transactions of this society. The aluminum end of the binary aluminum-titanium system has been studied. This system has received relatively little attention. To the authors' knowledge, there are two previous papers on this subject. E. van Erckelensl determined the constitutional diagram reproduced in Fig. 1. According to this diagram, the liquidus represents the separation of TiA14, (Ti = 30.7 per cent.). He concluded that this is the composition of the compound, because in his work the eutectic horizontal terminated at 30.7 per cent. titanium and the metallographic examinalion of a sample of this composition revealed only one phase. According to the constitutional diagram developed by W. Manchot and A. Leber,² reproduced in Fig. 2 from data given in their article, the liquidus represents the separation of the compound TiA13 (Ti = 37.2 per cent. ). The composition of the compound was derived in a manner similar to that utilized by van Erckelens. Moreover, Manchot and Leber confirmed the composition of the compound by analysis of the constituent left as a residue after dissolving the alloys in weak sodium hydroxide solution. Although these are the only publications describing the constitution of the system, other investigators have studied the composition of the titanium compound. L. WÖhler3 says that there is a compound TiA13 which was later confirmed by W. Manchot and P. Richter4 and by

12.1 -1. Introduction. Problems concerning slopes in soils and rock generally arise in connection with road cuts and open pit mines. The angle at which a slope will safely stand is of major economic importance to both the road designer and the open pit operator. Stable slopes in soils and rock are evaluated through two fundamental approaches, namely, soil mechanics and rock mechanics. The approach selected to make this evaluation depends upon the material in the slope. For the purposes of this chapter, only slopes totally in soil or totally in rock are considered. By definition, soils are unconsolidated accumulations of solid materials produced by mechanical and chemical disintegration of rocks or the accumulation of sediments (28); rock is defined as the hard, compact, natural materials composing the crust of the earth (10). The basic factors affecting slopes in soil or rock are similar, although rock strengths are orders of magnitude greater than soil strengths. In general, the strength of large masses of soil depends upon the texture of the soil, the particle size, cohesion, and resistance to tensile and shear stress; the strength of large masses of rock depends upon the strength of the rock and the defects, such as faults, fractures or joints, that intersect the rock. Further, some of the defects in rock are cemented or uncemented, and may be filled with materials that are strong or weak compared to the rock. In slopes of either soils or rock, the stability is presumed to be a function of the slope height, slope angle, the size of the excavation, and the stresses imposed on the soil or rock by tectonic and/or gravity forces, earthquakes, or other static or dynamic forces. In addition, both soil and rock slopes are affected by static and dynamic water pressures in the pores of soils or permeable rocks or in the defects in the rock behind the slope. Visual observations of slope failures also indicate that both soil and rock can deteriorate with time, and this deterioration may be caused primarily by weathering (27).

PERSONNEL work is a term recently introduced to cover the great variety of activities in industrial work that deal with the human factor. Much attention has been focussed upon individual phases of personnel work, such as accident prevention, sanitation, "welfare" work, reducing labor' turnover, and so on. In most cases these activities have been carried on as though they were distinct and separate fields; as a matter of fact, they are only different phases of the single problem of human engineering, and each has important and fundamental relations with the others. Thus, for example, high labor turnover is one of the most .important causes of a high accident rate, and unsatisfactory housing conditions are an important cause of labor turnover. In the early stages of the study of these problems, it was necessary to take them up separately; the time has now arrived at which it is desirable to consider them as a whole in order to bring them into the right relation to each other. When thus considered as phases of an interrelated whole, they may be grouped as personnel work. A discussion of the importance of personnel work as a means of in creasing dividends in industry may be objected to by some as a too materialistic way of looking upon work that is humanitarian. Nothing could he more mistaken than such an opinion. Humanitarianism, per se, has no place in industry, and nothing is gained and much is lost in pre tending that it has. The only reason why a corporation engages in business is to make profits, and any activity of the corporation that does not tend either directly or indirectly toward that end is poor business. It is equally poor business to overlook any activities that do tend indirectly to the making of profits. On this basis, personnel work can be justified as a corporate activity; there is no justification whatever for abstract humanitarianism from the business standpoint. One characteristic of the American workman is a general high level of intelligence, and it is an insult to intelligence to ask a man to believe that anything so impersonal as a corporation is really desirous of benefiting

DURING the past year considerable work dealing with physical properties of cartridge brass was done at the University of Michigan in cooperation with the Ordnance Department of the U. S. Army. This paper gives some of the data bearing on the effect of the anneal, previous to the final reduction or rolling, on the physical properties, particularly the hardness. Various phases of the subject of physical properties of cartridge brass have been presented by different investigators. Mathewson and Phillips1 refer to the work of Grard, in 1909, as the first systematic presentation of the relation between temperature-and time of anneal; changing of physical properties and microstructure, and the previous reduction by cold rolling. They discuss the relation between time and temperature of anneal and the previous reduction by cold rolling also; the relation between physical properties and grain size of annealed brass. The degree of deformation previous to the annealing was found to determine the temperature at which recrystallization and corresponding changes in physical properties would take place. Bassett and Davis,2 in establishing the relation between grain size and Brinell hardness; found the hardness for low-temperature annealing to be dependent on the previous degree of reduction, while for anneals above a certain temperature the hardness after the anneal was independent of the degree of reduction. Actual differences in hardness, due to the degree of reduction, disappear only on annealing at 600° C. or above; though the differences for metal subjected to different degrees of reduction and annealed at temperatures between 350° and 600° C. were found to be relatively small. The manufacture of zinc oxide directly from the ore is one of the most important contributions that America has made to the metallurgy of zinc. Heretofore, this has been done chiefly for the production of zinc and zinc-lead pigments, and the method has been known as the Wetherill process. While that term may properly be applied to the process for pigment manufacture, it must be recognized that the principles of the process are of far wider application; and that there is going to be wider application in the immediate future is more than an expectation. I have in mind the use of the process as a method of igneous concentration. Igneous concentration is broader in its scope than the Wetherill process, for it may be done in the blast smelting furnace, or in the re-verberatory, or by other means. Igneous concentration is a rather clumsy term, and I prefer to introduce the new generic expression of "zinc burning," which is convenient, readily understood, and precise, for in all cases the zinc oxide is reduced to metallic form, is volatilized and is then burned to zinc oxide, the latter happening, however, after the zinc has been separated from the residue of the ore. As previously indicated, zinc burning may be done either in blast or reverberatory smelting, the gangue of the ore being scorified and drawn off as slag, while other metallic minerals are reduced to matte or metal. Such processes have heretofore been practised on fairly large scales. Thus, F. L. Bartlett smelted zinc ores at Con City, Colo., in specially designed blast furnaces, wherein the smelting column was only about 18 in. high. Such a limitation was necessary in order to prevent zinky accretions in the shaft of the furnace, which in course of time would have interfered with its operation. In running the Bartlett furnaces it was easy to bar them off, indeed, to poke right down into the smelting zone, and keep things going freely. Some iron blast furnaces in Virginia and the spiegeleisen furnaces of the New Jersey Zinc Co. afford other examples of zinc burning in blast-furnace smelting, although in their cases the happening is incidental rather than a primary purpose. Just as zinc may be burned off in a blast furnace, so also may it be done in a reverberatory. IN the presentation which follows, washability curves, such as are commonly used in making studies preliminary to the cleaning of any coal or to the concentration of any mineral, have been reduced in each instance to a single straight line; thus all the most important characteristics of the coal or mineral are represented in a form more advantageous than that in which such data usually are shown. To obtain consistent results, float-and-sink data must be based on a single definite narrow size range, which may be designated "a coal unit." It will be shown that such units, each embodying a different size range, can be grouped to form what may be termed "a composite coal." A three-dimensional presentation will emerge, which will closely identify the coal, illustrate its characteristics in a new manner and explain many obscure facts. FLOAT-AND-SINK TESTS For the preliminary study of any cleaning or concentration problem, or in the control of any operation, float-and-sink tests must be made. The results of these tests are grouped in tabular form and then illustrated in various systems of curves; but if such a graphic representation is to have the utmost practical value, it must offer at least the following advantages: (I) It must be easier to read than the tabular results, and (2) it must be easy to plot, check and interpolate. The first requirement will be attained by reducing the number of curves to a minimum, and the second by some system of representation that will use only straight lines. Of the many washing curves now in use, only the "recovery curve," often known as the "composite curve "-a somewhat misleading term-will be considered. Any point on the recovery curve will show what percentage of weight of clean coal can be recovered when the mineral is washed at a certain specific gravity. As an example, the tests listed below Fig. I are illustrated in the drawing by a curve obtained by plotting (I) as abscissas the ash content of the coal recovered and (2) as ordinates the corresponding percentage of refuse discarded; but, in general practice, instead of writing down that weight, it is customary to set down its complement, which is the corresponding weight of coal recovered. From this curve can be deduced the information necessary for the solution of most practical problems. NEW FORM OF GRAPHIC PRESENTATION The resemblance of the recovery curve in Fig. I, or, for that matter, the recovery curve obtained in common practice, to a power curve is apparent. The general equation of such a curve is y = axn where n is negative. Taking logarithms: log y = a + n log x. Using a logarithmic scale, the equation of the recovery curve will be Y = A + bX. THE 650-ton underground mill of The Empire Zinc Company of Colorado (a subsidiary of The New Jersey Zinc Co.) serves the Eagle mine at Gilman in the Battle Mountain mining district of Colorado. The topography is rough, the mine and mill being under Battle Mountain and the adit entrance in the north wall of the canyon of the Eagle River, which is here a steel) gorge. The town of Gilman stands on a shoulder of the mountain at altitude 8975 ft., above sea level, along the Pike's Peak ocean to ocean highway and contains the company office and the usual facilities of a modern mining town. The railway contact is at Belden, altitude 8370 ft., at the bottom of the gorge directly below Gilman, where the westbound track of the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad is cut along the north bank and the eastbound track along the south bank of the river. A general description of the mine, mill and service facilities, with an account of the geology, character of the ore and methods of mining and milling having previously been published in a series of articles', this paper will discuss with as little repetition as practicable the reasons for building the mill underground rather than as a conventional structure, the methods of construction employed and the experiences gained in what is apparently the pioneer plant of this type and extent. There is a large historical background for underground plant construc-tion. From the dim past caves have been used for dwellings, stables, storage and shops. It was natural that where caves were available their many advantages led to their enlargement to suit convenience and where they were not available but the ground conditions, topography and, drainage were favorable, to the construction of artificial caves. In the vicinity of Epernay, France, extensive underground chambers protect the manufacture and storage of champagne-an intricate and ingenious application of chemical engineering-and in recent years these plants have been mechanized by the installation of conveyor systems. Within the past few years, particularly because of the rapid growth of the airplane industry during the war, considerable attention has been paid to the manufacture of light-wall cold-drawn seamless and welded steel tubing for structural purposes. While the manufacture of such tubing is not, in itself, a difficult matter, some difficulties have been encountered in producing the same under specifications requiring definite physical properties. It is the purpose of this paper to describe the methods of manufacture and the properties that may be obtained by such methods for tubing coming within about 1/2 to 2 in. (12.7 to 50.8 mm.) outside diameter and 10 to 22 Birmingham wire gage (0.134 to 0.028 in. wall thickness). Such tubing is largely used as structural material in the aircraft industry, and it is of the utmost importance that the physical and chemical properties should be known, and also that the various factors entering into the manufacture should be under such control as to allow these properties to be varied and held within definite limits. In general, tubing may be divided into four classes: namely, specialty tubing, such as riveted-sheet or plate, lock jointed, etc.; brazed tubing; welded tubing; and seamless tubing. Welded tubing may be divided into hot product, such as lap welded and butt welded, and cold product, such as acetylene and electric welded. Seamless tubing may be hot rolled or cold drawn. Specialty Tubing The first two classes present mainly mechanical or structural engineering problems. A simple form of tube is made by riveting together the overlapping edges of rolled sheets or plates formed into a cylinder. Because of the nature of its construction, such a tube is necessarily limited to relatively large sizes. Lock-jointed tubing is produced by passing low-carbon strip through a forming machine having suitable rolls and dies, its manufacture is almost entirely a question of design of the forming machine and its satisfactory operation. The chief application of such tubing is in the manufacture of bedsteads.

Miscible displacement in both thewetting and non-wetting phase has been studied in two-phase systems. Experimental data show that dispersion is a function of saturation and cannot be predicted from dispersion theory developed for single-phase miscible displacement. Some of the effect of saturation on dispersion is a result of the development of dead-end pores or a dendritic pore structure in multiphase systems. The presence of dead-end pores or dendritic structure is confirmed by pressure transient studies. INTRODUCTION Displacement by flooding with a miscible liquid is a possible means for recovering the estimated two-thirds of the oil that remains behind after primary production. The immense economic importance of a process that can recover such large quantities of oil has led to extensive laboratory studies of miscible displacement. As usual in production research, most laboratory studies of miscible displacement have not attemped to reproduce all of the conditions existing in a petroleum reservoir. In the early stages of investigation the need has been for information on the broad, basic principles of the phenomena involved in miscible displacement. The effects of overburden pressure, reservoir temperature, and wettability have been considered of secondary importance. However, one property of a petroleum reservoir which is expected to be of major importance and yet has been omitted from many laboratory studies is the presence of interstitial water. Two possible effects of interstitial water on the displacement mechanism in the hydrocarbon phase immediately come to mind. First, from the general1y accepted theory that capillarity governs the distribution of oil and water in porous rock one would expect that for water-wet rock the water will be in the small pores and oil in the large pores. A miscible displacement of oil carried out in the presence of water is operating in a pore size distribution shown in Fig. lb, whereas if the same test had been performed with only one phase present the pore size distribution is as shown in Fig. la. Although there is not yet a theory of miscible displacement which explains in detail the effect of pore size distribution, one would expect the differences between Figs. la and lb to influence the displacement efficiency. A second factor which may make a multiphase system different from a single-phase system is the presence in the multiphase system of dead-end pores or dendritic structure. Experiments of various kinds on reservoir rock have led to the belief that all pores in the network structure of a porous rock take part in conducting fluid during single phase fluid flow.1,2 There are then no dead-end pores and no fingers or dendritic structures containing stagnant fluid. Since 1923, which closed the speculative era in the bituminous coal fields of the United States, there have been wide annual fluctuations in the national production of bituminous coal. These changes in annual output have been variously attributed to: (1) increased competition from petroleum products, natural gas and hydroelectric power; (2) lower unit consumption of coal; and (3) fluctuations in the general business level. The purpose of this paper is to measure, from a practical standpoint, the net effect upon the annual trend of bituminous coal production, and to give those who are interested a basis for estimating in advance the probable output of bituminous coal. It can readily be shown that changes in the level of general business affect the national production of bituminous coal more than does any other factor. Therefore it is necessary to use some standard measure of the relative business level for purposes of comparison. The Federal Reserve Board Index of Industrial Production offers the basis for such a measure.l This Index, a weighted composite of 81 different series, rests upon the averages of the years 1935 to 1939 as 100, and is presented graphically in Fig. I. Even a cursory examination of the chart will indicate a definite uptrend for industrial production over a period of years. This uptrend is due to at least two factors: (I) an actual increase in national population, and (2) a probable increase in the per capita consumption of goods. This means that there is no such thing as a fixed Normal, rather Normal is a variable, tending to increase from year to year. In order to measure the amount of annual increase in normal, the Index of Industrial Production must be studied in relation to its major components, Durable Goods and Nondurable Goods, Durable Goods are those made from the lasting materials such as iron, steel, other metals, lumber, stone, cement, clay, glass. Nondurable Goods are those for early consumption, such as foods, textiles, tobacco, chemicals, paper, gasoline, and goods made of leather and rubber. The purchase of Durable Goods may be postponed, but Nondurable Goods must be purchased currently unless the standard of living is lowered. The Federal Reserve Indexes of durable and nondurable goods are shown graphically, 1920 to 1939, on Fig. a (pp. 764-765 of ref. I). It is apparent that fluctuations in the production of nondurable goods are not nearly so wide as in the production of durable goods, and that the curve of Industrial Production (Fig. I) would fall between the two curves on Fig. 2. It would, however, seem logical that both curves should follow the same long-term trend, or that over a period of two to three decades the relative proportion of durable and nondurable goods, in periods of normal production, should be the same. A FUNDAMENTAL investigation of the mecha-nism of the ordering reaction and of the accompanying changes in properties has been undertaken, since an extensive study of this process could well contribute to the knowledge of phase transitions in alloys. Cobalt-platinum alloys were chosen for the study since they exhibit interesting and unusual permanent magnet properties.1,2. In addition, the ordering reaction in cobalt-platinum alloys is a convenient one to study experimentally because of the high maximum ordering temperature, the large difference in the X-ray scattering power of cobalt and platinum atoms, and the relative ease with which the alloys can be plastically worked into wire and strip. In the early stages of this study, it became apparent that the published phase diagrams&apos;, &apos; of the cobalt-platinum system contained questionable features, in the region of 40 to 60 atomic pct Co, which were considered in another publication by the authors.4 That portion of the research reported elsewhere on the equilibrium states of cobalt-platinum alloys does not confirm the presence of a previously reported, high temperature disordered tetragonal phase and a low temperature body-centered cubic phase. On the other hand, the structure of the ordered phase is face-centered tetragonal with an atomic distribution analogous to that of CuAu.4 This lattice forms from the disordered face-centered cubic phase in such an orientation that the <100> directions are parallel to the <100> direc-tions of the disordered phase. At compositions other than the ideal 50 atomic pct the ordered phase can exist in equilibrium at high temperatures with the disordered phase. A Widmanstatten pattern of plate-like particles of the ordered phase parallel to (110) planes of the disordered matrix is observed when an initially disordered alloy is held at these temperatures. The temperature range of the two-phase region has been determined for three alloys by X-ray diffraction analyses, microscopic examination, and electrical resistivity measurements, and these results are incorporated with some of those of Gebhardt and Köster in the revised phase diagram of fig. 1. BECAUSE of its high strength and stiffness coupled with low density, continuous boron filament is showing great promise as a potential reinforcement for both metals and nonmetals. Of primary consideration for structural applications is the fatigue behavior of boron fiber composites. Composite fatigue behavior is dependent upon three factors: 1) fiber fatigue behavior, 2) matrix fatigue behavior, and 3) the effect of the interface and fiber ends. The purpose of this note is to describe the behavior of boron filament in rotating beam fatigue. The filament, described by Talley&apos; and Galasso, Salkind, Kuehl, and Patarini,&apos; was made by the hydrogen reduction of boron trichloride on a hot tungsten filament. Testing was performed using a commercial rotating beam wire fatigue tester* described by Votta.~ One end of the test sample is held in a chuck in a synchronous motor. The sample is bent around in a "U" shape, and the other end inserted into a carbide bushing. The maximum strain occurs at the bottom of the "U" where the radius of curvature is a minimum. The strain is adjusted by adjusting the length of the specimen and the location of the bushing. Samples were rotated at 3600 rpm and an automatic shutoff device used to determine the number of cycles to failure. The measurements were accurate to the nearest 360 cycles. The fatigue behavior is summarized in Fig. 1 for fifty-one samples of 4.8 x 10"3 in. diam fibers and ten samples of 3.2 X 10"3 in. diam fiber. The two sample groups represent two different filament production runs and two different nominal size groups. Both groups exhibited nominal tensile strengths of 400,000 psi. No significant difference in the fatigue behavior of the two sample groups is apparent. The scatter in the data is not unexpected for a brittle filament which exhibits a tensile strength distribution with a standard deviation of 10 to 15 pct. Because the test procedure provides a known outer fiber strain in the sample, the maximum stress was calculated assuming a Young&apos;s modulus of 58 x 10&apos; psi. This value was selected as being representative of several nominal fiber sizes.2 All of the samples which failed exhibited sudden, catastrophic fracture, and no permanent deformation. One sample was stopped after 1.66 x lo8 cycles at *200,000 psi. The fiber exhibited no apparent damage or deformation. It is apparent that the fatigue resistance of boron filament is quite good. It can therefore be speculated that the fatigue behavior of boron fiber composites would be controlled by the "weaker links", namely matrix fatigue resistance and interface behavior. In fact, preliminary investigations have revealed that this is true for boron-reinforced aluminum? It should be noted that the data presented herein may not necessarily reflect the tensile fatigue behavior of boron filament. It is well-known that boron filament has a radial residual stress pattern with the outer surface in ~om~ression.~ Because of this fact, tensile failure is normally nucleated in the interior of the filament.5 Since the data presented herein is for a rotating beam test in which only the outer surface of the fiber is stressed to the maximum value, it would be incorrect to assume that the failure mechanism and fatigue behavior would be the same if the fiber were tested in tensile fatigue. The fact that many of the data are well above the nominal 400,000 psi tensile strength would tend to support this argument. Potential differences between strata of shale and sandstone have been recognized for about years, and they form the basis of the electrical logging of oil wells. Hitherto these potentials have been ascribed solely to electrochemical reactions caused by the disturbing effects of the water in the drill hole through which they are generally measured. Observations by the author in wells empty of water and in a mine shaft suggest that potential differences between sandstones and shales are natural and specific properties of the rocks, although they are modified in measurement by the disturbing effects of the water in the drill hole. The cause of these potentials probably is to be sought in the relative polar adsorptive capacities of quartz and clay particles. Introduction The existence of potential differences in the surface of the earth has been known for some time, and their measurement has facilitated the discovery of geological discontinuities such as ore bodies. The technique of measurement has been well established.&apos;-a In measurements in oil wells, it has been found that the potential of shales with respect to some arbitrary reference is very nearly constant in any one well, at least below the zone to which meteoric water has gained access. Sandstones and some other types of sedimentary rocks have a difference of potential with respect to shale that is negative and may attain a value of 200 millivolts or more. The difference of potential, as usually measured commercially with water in the hole, is distributed over about one foot vertically at the top and bottom contacts of the sandstones. The sharpness of the curve at the formation contacts can be improved by using a short electrode that is close to the wall of the hole. These potentials generally have been ascribed to the disturbing effects of the water in the drill hole. Potentials have been found, however, in wells in which no water was present. In the course of experiments in electrical logging in Pennsylvania, carried out by the Pennsylvania Geological Survey, observations were made of several phenomena that hitherto have not been described, to the author&apos;s knowledge, in the published literature. The potential differences across the contacts of sandstone and shale are called in this paper "natural potentials," as distinguished from the potentials caused by electroendosmosis (electrofiltration) and concentration differences, which will be discussed subsequently. Potentials in Cored Well In the spring of 1942, the author measured the potentials in an exploratory well (Day 13, near Grand Valley, Pa.) which had been cored with diamond tools. The potentials were first measured with fresh water in the hole. A null balance potentiometer was used in this and all the other measurements described in this paper. THE internal friction of single crystals of metals is affected markedly by a variety of factors, which, according to the literature, are without influence on the internal friction of polycrystalline metals at strain amplitudes less than 10-5. For example, the internal friction of a suitably oriented zinc single crystal is multiplied by a factor of l00 when the vibration amplitude is slightly increased, and the internal friction of a copper crystal is markedly increased by the application of a stress of 30 lb. per sq. in. for one minute. In this paper it will be shown that these, together with the other phenomena associated with the damping of mechanical vibrations in metal single crystals, can be satisfactorily explained, at least qualitatively, in terms of an atomic mechanism that has been proposed for quite another purpose-that of accounting for slip in metals. The extraordinary agreement between the observed behavior of the metal single crystals and the behavior that could be predicted on the basis of this atomic mechanism leads to the belief that the latter is probably essentially correct. If this is so, it follows that valuable information about the slip process in metals may be gained from measurements of internal friction on single crystals. In this paper the results of the only study to date on the damping of mechanical vibrations in single crystals of metals will be presented. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The internal friction of a material is a measure of the rate at which the energy of mechanical vibrations is converted into heat. The measure of internal friction used in the present paper is the decrement A, which is defined as the fraction of the energy of vibration lost per half cycle. The measurements described here were .made for longitudinal oscillations at a frequency of 33.5 kc. for the copper crystals, and at a frequency of 39 kc. for the zinc crystals. The method used is that of the composite piezoelectric oscillator. The single-crystal specimens are in the form of circular cylinders ¼ in. in diameter and 1 ½ to 2 ½ in. long. The crystal rods are waxed in a V-block and sawed to the proper length with a fine jeweler&apos;s saw. The ends of the specimen are ground flat, and one end is cemented with a very thin film of beeswax and rosin to the end of an x-cut quartz rod which is ¼ in. in diameter and 3 in. long. The length of the specimen rod is determined by the condition that its natural frequency for longitudinal vibration be the same as that of the quartz rod, within 0.5 per cent. The lengths of the specimens are thus different for different orientations of the cylinder axis with respect to the crystallographic axes. When the specimen and quartz rods are thus matched in frequency the adhesive is at a node of stress, and it has been shown experimentally that under these circumstances

RECRYSTALLIZATION of cold-worked metals has long been known to proceed by a process of nucleation and growth.1 When a cold-worked metal is heated to a temperature at which recrystallization will ensue, nuclei of new grains, essentially strain-free, appear and grow. As the process proceeds, nuclei continue to appear and to grow, until the cold-worked matrix has been entirely consumed and recrystallization has been completed (Fig. I). Conducted isothermally, a measurement of the fraction of the matrix recrystallized plotted against time, yields an isothermal recrystallization curve, showing the time course of the recrystallization process (Fig. 2).2 Evidently, then, the rate of recrystallization is determined by the rate at which nuclei form and the rate at which they grow. The rate of nucleation N is the number of nuclei that form in unit time in unit volume of the unrecrystallized matrix, and the rate of growth G is the increase in radius of the recrystallized grain per unit time. In recent years attempts have been made to determine N and G as these vary with the well-recognized variables affecting recrystallization: time, temperature, degree of deformation, etc.&apos; Such studies yield information that is more fundamental than that conveyed by the conventional recrystallization diagram,&apos; since the rate of recrystallization is thus analyzed into its two component rates.2 Methods are now available by which N and G can be measured, and analytical expressions have been developed for the interrelationships among N, G, the isothermal recrystallization curve, and the final grain size, which greatly facilitate analysis.2-4 The application of these methods has been demonstrated recently for the recrystallization of silicon ferrite.2 Data on N and G in dependence upon the recognized recrystallization variables are, however, very fragmentary;* values of N and G have been determined for some metals, but the effect of temperature, which would yield the fundamentally important activation energies, has been too little studied. Thus far there has been no detailed study of the recrystallization of any one metal in terms of N and G over appreciable ranges of the variables time, temperature, degree of deformation, and original grain size. It is the purpose of the present paper to provide such a study, employing aluminum.

THE third annual Joint Western Mining Convention, held at Los Angeles, Sept. 10 to 13 inclusive, was a notable success both as to attendance and interest. Registration the first day amounted to 201, and the total crept up to 347 before the close. The American Institute of Mining Engineers was well represented, approximately 80% of those registered and most of the speakers being members. This illustrates largely the amount of interlocking membership and the reason for holding at one time and place meetings of the several related organizations. The plan has proved so successful that it is probable that Spokane will extend an invitation for next year that seems likely to be accepted. It is proposed that the convention be timed so as to permit visitors from the East to stop there Oct. 3 to 5, en route to the American Institute of Mining Engineers meeting at San Francisco, Oct. 7 to 9. Simultaneously, it is expected that the Petroleum Division will hold its fall session at Los Angeles, the two streams of travel meeting in San Francisco, just before departure of the party of engineers traveling to Japan to attend the World&apos;s Engineering Congress. The Los Angeles meeting opened Monday morning with a general session under the auspices of the Western Division of the American Mining Congress with Philip Wiseman in the chair. After a series of short responses to the welcome extended, Charles W. Merrill discussed the needs of the western mining industry. A complimentary luncheon to members and delegates followed.
