This paper presents the results and analysis of field trials of various magnetic instruments over anomalies ranging from 20 to 5000 gammas of vertical intensity. The following instruments were used: Askania vertical magnetometer, Wolfson vertical magnetometer (model M-I), Hotchkiss Superdips (used both parallel to and normal to the magnetic meridian, with several settings of the "sigma" angle), Lake Superior dip needle, and the dipping circle for measurements of inclination. The change in inclination over the measured anomalies ranged up to 4"; this caused pronounced changes in sensitivity of the Hotchkiss Superdip oriented parallel to the magnetic meridian. The variable sensitivity not only gives apparent displacement of crests of anomalies, particularly at high sensitivities, but also makes the data difficult or impossible to use in preparation of iso-anomaly maps. This weakness in field performance of the Superdip is shown to be eliminated by orienting the instrument normal to the magnetic meridian and measuring vertical intensity only, which in the latitude of upper Michigan is equal to 97 pct of the total intensity. The dip needle is seen to be relatively ineffectual for location of anomalies of less than 400 gammas. Introduction The U.S- Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Geological Survey Division of Michigan Department of Conservation, has for the past three years been engaged in a restudy of the Iron River-Crystal Falls iron mining district of upper Michigan. The bedrock in a large part of this area is covered with glacial deposits as much as 500-ft thick, and, inasmuch as some of the rocks have moderate to high magnetic permeability, extensive magnetic mapping has been done to assist in unraveling the complicated structure of the area. Several types of instruments have been used, and the major purpose of this paper is to present comparative data on the field performances of some of these instruments so as to aid others who face similar problems elsewhere to evaluate and choose the instruments best suited for the work. The paper is directed primarily to geologists and engineers rather than to geophysicists, although some familiarity with the instruments is presumed. The geology of the area consists of a complexly folded series of weakly metamorphosed sedimentary rocks, including the iron formation, which rests on older greenstones. Although the iron formation itself is only locally magnetic, some of the beds stratigraphically above the iron formation are rather strongly so. By tracing these hanging wall magnetic anomalies valuable information is obtained from which the structure and distribution of the iron formation can be inferred. Critical anomalies range from 25 to 6000 gammas of vertical intensity. Many anomalies can be traced in part with the common dip needle, but detection of others requires more sensitive instruments.

The Marquette range, on which are situated the iron mines of Mar-quette County, together with a few in Baraga County, Mich., extends from a point 10 miles southwest of Marquette westward for 30 miles. The tracts are usually a multiple of the standard 40-acre parcel, which is the smallest government subdivision of a square mile or section. About half of the mines are held in fee, these being owned by the older mining companies. Some of them date back to about 1880, and a few are as early as 1850. During the past 40 years most of the mines opened have been on leased lands, the royalty being either for a stated amount per ton or a percentage of the selling price of the ore at the lower lake ports, or the selling price on board of cars at the mine. The first merchantable body of ore discovered in the Lake Superior district was found, in 1845, at what is known as the Jackson mine, near Negaunee. This ore was hard hematite. After unprofitable attempts had been made, in 1848, to smelt it in forges, shipments were begun to lower lake ports, which increased rapidly upon the completion of the locks at Sault Ste. Marie, in 1855, and the railroad from the mines to Marquette, in 1857. Beginning with the Pioneer, in 1858, a number of small charcoal furnaces were built to smelt a part of the product. At various points in the upper and lower peninsulas, large charcoal furnaces are still making iron from the ores of the Marquette range. In connection with these furnaces are byproduct plants. As the deposits were opened up, soft ore was encountered, but for a few years this was disregaided, as only the hard ore was used. Underground mining was begun about 1880 and during the next few years the open-pit mines producing high-grade ore were exhausted. The first mines in the district were owned by the Jackson, Cleveland, Lake Superior, Lake Angeline, Champion, Iron Cliffs, Humboldt, Republic, and Michigamme companies. Many of these companies have been merged in the holdings of The Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co., which controls most of the tonnage of the district.

IN the past 15 years there has been a great deal of interest in the fundamentals of plastic flow and rupture in metals and a number of papers have presented substantial advances toward a fundamental insight into the mechanism of these two processes. This paper is an appraisal of the present position with respect to the following: I. The relative importance of shear and hydrostatic stresses in controlling the plastic flow of metals. 2. The relative importance of shear and hydrostatic stresses in determining the amount of flow before rupture in metals. 3. The use of generalid strains in determining the effect of plastic flow on the work-hardening of metals. FUNDAMENTALS INVOLVED IN PLASTIC FLOW In attempting to devise a quantitative description of plastic flow in metals, it has been customary to assume that metals are homogeneous and isotropic. The fact that neither of these assumptions is correct complicates the experimental appraisal of relations developed. Never- the less, as will be shown, metals are close enough to being isotropic and homogeneous so that considerable insight into the mechanism of plastic flow can be obtained. The assumptions of .isotropy and homogeneity allow both the elastic and plastic behavior of metals to be described in terms of 12 variables-six being stress variables, and six being strain variables. ) From this viewpoint, it should be possible to represent the stress-strain relations in the plastic range for metals by a surface in 12 dimensions. One boundary of this surface would be the surface of transition from elastic to plastic behavior; the other would be the surface of rupture. These two surfaces would be joined by the surface of plastic flow. The shape of this composite surface would depend on the test temperature and speed of straining. This paper is concerned only with results obtained at constant temperature and constant speed of straining. While such a representation is conceivable, the demonstration of such a surface would present almost insurmountable obstacles. The most fruitful simplification of this concept has been the recognition that the behavior of metals in the plastic region is primarily a result of shear stresses and strains. Based on this viewpoint, it is possible to utilize stress and strain invariants that are independent of hydrostatic components to define an effective stress and strain. In effect, this amounts to reducing the task of representing stresses and strains in 12 dimensions to one of representation in two dimensions. The word ".development," as used in connection with mining, is a rather general term and in most instances must be qualified or explained before the exact thought in the mind of the user is made clear. For instance, by the development of a mining district is often meant its entire facilities of mineral production, such as railroads, towns, mine plants, etc. In speaking of the development of a property its prospecting by test pits or diamond drill borings may be referred to; or it may be the mines, strip pits or quarries from which the coal, ore or rock is won. Rut, as a rule, when the development of an individual mine is spoken of the idea in mind is the system of underground workings by means of which the mineral is recovered and transported to the surface. It is this character of development that is considered here. The discussion will be confined to the ordinary room-and-pillar system of mining practically horizontal coal seams that is used in most bituminous coal mines in this country, and to only two phases of this subject; viz., what is properly included under the head of "Development" as it appears on the books of a coal company or the inventories of an examining engineer, and how its " value " should be determined by the accountant or engineer. No absolute rule or definite agreement covers these points, yet these questions are far more than academic. Development is often an important part of a mining company's assets, affecting the amount of its invested capital (and hence its rate of taxation under present Federal income tax laws) as well as the value of its total assets and the amounts chargeable to cost of coal and to depreciation. Mine Development Account Perhaps the majority of mine accountants will agree that the mine development account is that capital account which shows the extraordinary expenditures incurred in opening and expanding the underground workings of a mine until it has reached its normal production, the expenditures being those made for shafts, slopes, rock tunnels, drift mouths and such relatively permanent work; also payments over and above ordinary mining costs made for driving entries, air courses and break-through; for

Edward S. Simpson, Perth, Western Australia (communication to the Secretary): In 1896 the East Coolgardie gold-field was divided into three fields, viz. : Area, square miles. Officia1 Centers. (1) East Coolgardie,. . 634 Kalgoorlie. (2) Broad Arrow,. , 588 Kurawa. (3) Northeast Coolgardie,. 22,960 Kanowna. The whole of the area embraced by the eastern gold-fields is covered with late Tertiary sands and gravel, with occasional beds of clay shales. These mostly overlay granite which occasionally shows through in small round hills. At Coolgardie, Kalgoorlie and other mining centers, belts of diorite, serpentine and highly metamorphosed sedimentary rocks appear on the surface. The rainfall at Kalgoorlie in 1897 was 4.75 inches. That the climate has not always been so arid is evidenced by the recent discovery at Coolgardie (only twenty-five miles away) in the late Tertiary formations of a thick bed of brown coal, containing numerous fossil fern-leaves. As assayer and mineralogist to the Government of Western Australia I have had occasion to examine a large amount of the Kalgoorlie ores, both in Perth and at the mines at Boulder itself. The usefulness of the electrical resistivity log in determining reservoir characteristics is governed largely by: (I) the accuracy with which the true resistivity of the formation can be determined; (2) the scope of detailed data concerning the relation of resistivity measurements to formation characteristics; (3) the available information concerning the conductivity of connate or formation waters; (4) the extent of geologic knowledge regarding probable changes in facies within given horizons, both vertically and laterally, particularly in relation to the resultant effect on the electrical properties of the reservoir. Simple examples are given in the following pages to illustrate the use of resistivity logs in the solution of some problems dealing with oil and gas reservoirs. From the available information, it is apparent that much care must be exercised in applying to more complicated cases the methods suggested. It should be remembered that the equations given are not precise and represent only approximate relationships. It is believed, however, that under favorable conditions their application falls within useful limits of accuracy. Introduction The electrical log has been used extensively in a qualitative way to correlate formations penetrated by the drill in the exploitation of oil and gas reservoirs and to provide some indication of reservoir content. However, its use in a quantitative way has been limited because of various factors that tend to obscure the significance of the electrical readings obtained. Some of these factors are the borehole size, . the resistivity of the mud in the borehole, the effect of invasion of the mud filtrate into the formation, the relation of the recorded thickness of beds to electrode spacing, the heterogeneity of geologic formations, the salinity or conductivity of connate water, and, perhaps of greatest importance, the lack of data indicating the relationship of the resistivity of a formation in situ to its character and fluid content. On the Gulf Coast it is found that the effects of the size of the borehole and the mud resistivity are generally of little importance, except when dealing with high formational resistivities or extremely low mud resistivities. Fortunately, little practical significance need be attached to the exact values of the higher resistivities recorded. Low mud resistivities are not common, but when this condition is encountered it may be corrected by replacing the mud column. With the present advanced knowledge of mud control, invasion of mud filtrate into sands can be minimized, thereby increasing the dependability of the electrical log. The effect of electrode spacing on the recorded thickness of a bed is often subject to compensation or can be sufficiently accounted for to provide an acceptable approximation of the true resistivity of the formation. As development of a field or area progressively enhances the knowledge of the lithologic section, the resistivity values of the electrical log take on greater significance, ultimately affording acceptable interpretations. The difficulties inherent in table concentration operations as applied to gold, silver, lead and zinc ores, are accentuated in the scheelite mill, which has a flowsheet that is similar in general principles. The narrow "spread" in the specific gravity between scheelite and the usual gangue in which it occurs often makes its clean separation extremely difficult and in some cases impracticable. The problem is further complicated by the extreme friability of the mineral and its inordinate tendency to "slime," particularly where fine grinding is necessary and wet grinding methods are employed. The physical aspect of the occurrence of scheelite in the ores, the kind and character of the rock in which the mineral is present, its hardness, friability and the specific gravity of its constituents, as well as like characteristics of the associated minerals— pyrite, pyrrhotite, sphalerite, and others, all have a bearing on the successful milling of crude ores and the production of a concentrate that is marketable with minimum price penalty or none at all. Most tungsten deposits are considered low grade when the limiting factor of low percentage recovery by gravity methods is borne in mind. The great majority of deposits developed or in process of development carry from 0.4 to 1.0 per cent tungstic oxide. Ore carrying I per cent is considered good grade; 0.7 to 0.8 per cent, fair, and below that figure, low grade. Steady mill feed averaging upward of I .o per cent WO3 is exceptional. Inasmuch as buying specifications demand a 60 per cent W03 content, the mineral content of the ores as mined must be concentrated to at least that degree. A few companies have constructed chemical plants for the treatment of their complex concentrates and low-grade flotation product, but the smaller operator must rely on table concentration, borrowing the tools and to a large extent the methods of his predecessors in the gold, silver, lead and zinc mills. Whether these are the best tools and methods that can be devised is an open question. Except in rare instances, table concentration, however carefully conducted, does not yield a satisfactory final recovery of the mineral content in headings as indicated by chemical determinations of tungstic oxide content. A saving of 60 to 65 per cent is considered fair, and an average 80 per cent recovery, exceptional. Each scheelite ore body is a separate problem. Details of handling that give best results in one case may not be successfully operative at a property on the same contact zone and but a short distance removed. Supplementary treatment of tailings by flotation may be successful in producing a low-grade concentrate of around 15 per cent W03, which is adapted to further treatment chemically at a given property and entirely unsuccessful at another. This problem constitutes another of the unanswered questions. The following paragraphs relate solely to the beneficiation of scheelite ores by table concentration and supplementary methods.

The North Texas district, as herein defined, includes the counties of Archer, Baylor, Clay, Coolie, Foard, Hardeman, Knox, Montague, Wichita, and Wilbarger. This area covers generally the crest and south flank of a system of buried mountains known as the Red River uplift. The oil and gas accumulations along this feature are in traps, which, although localized by structures incident to the regional uplift, are usually modified by stratigraphic changes in the sediments. Excepting the fields in southeastern Baylor, southern Archer, and southwestern Clay Counties, all the fields within the district are on this Red River uplift. These exceptions, which have the same type of oil and gas accumulation as the other fields, are on the extreme north end of the Bend arch, which is a broad anticline plunging northward from the Llano uplift in central Texas to Archer County. The larger part of past oil and gas production has come from Pennsylvanian strata, with less important amounts from the Permian, and minor but increasingly important quantities from the Ordovician. DevELopments during 1941 Nearly 1600 wells were drilled in the district during 1941 as compared with more than 1700 in 1940. However, the ratio of successful drilling operations was higher and some 1200 oil wells were completed. Production held about even with the previous year, as did the number of producing oil wells. Known oil reserves increased slightly throughout exploration, which generally was carried on at greater depths than in former years. The average depth of discovery wells was 300 ft. deeper than in 1940. Although discoveries were evenly divided numerically between horizons above the base of the Strawn series and those below the Strawn, the deeper horizons, including the Bend series of the Pennsylvanian, the Mississippian limestone, and the Simpson and Ellenburger of the Ordovician, furnished most of the increase in oil reserves. The largest single addition to the reserves was in the Ellenburger formation in the K.M.A. field. During the year 112 wells were completed in this horizon, bringing the total developed acreage to some 4600 acres. The Straan series in K.M.A. also received considerable development in 1941, with 114 completions. K.M.A. Pressure Maintenance Satisfactory progress was made by the K.M.A. Pressure Maintenance Association in 1941. At the end of the year, 99 wells were being used for input and total monthly volume of gas returned to the reservoir reached a high of 340,548 M cu. ft. in December from a low of 208,853 M cu. ft. in February. Total volume of gas returned during 1941 was 3,306,052 M cu. ft. To the end of the year, 150 cu. ft. of gas had been returned for every barrel of oil produced from the reservoir while the input ratio for December was 397 cu. ft. Per

In the presentation which follows, wash-ability curves, such as are commonly used in making studies preliminary to the cleaning of any coal or to the concentration of any mineral, have been reduced in each instance to a single straight line; thus all the most important characteristics of the coal or mineral are represented in a form more advantageous than that in which such data usually are shown. To obtain consistent results, float-and-sink data must be based on a single definite narrow size range, which may be designated "a coal unit." It will be shown that such units, each embodying a different size range, can be grouped to form what may be termed "a composite coal." A three-dimensional presentation will emerge, which will closely identify the coal, illustrate its characteristics in a new manner and explain many obscure facts. Float-and-sink Tests For the preliminary study of any cleaning or concentration problem, or in the control of any operation, float-and-sink tests must be made. The results of these tests are grouped in tabular form and then illustrated in various systems of curves; but if such a graphic representation is to have the utmost practical value, it must offer at least the following advantages: (I) It must be easier to read than the tabular results, and (2) it must be easy to plot, check and interpolate. The first requirement will be attained by reducing the number of curves to a minimum, and the second by some system of representation that will use only straight lines. Of the many washing curves now in use, only the "recovery curve," often known as the "composite curve"—a somewhat misleading term—will be considered; Any point on the recovery curve will show what percentage of weight of clean coal can be recovered when the mineral is washed at a certain specific gravity. As an example, the tests listed below Fig. I are illustrated in the drawing by a curve obtained by plotting (I) as abscissas the ash content of the coal recovered and (2) as ordinates the corresponding percentage of refuse discarded; but, in general practice, instead of writing down that weight, it is customary to set down its complement, which is the corresponding weight of coal recovered. From this curve can be deduced the information necessary for the solution of most practical problems. New Form of Graphic Presentation The resemblance of the recovery curve ill Fig. 1, or, for that matter, the recovery curve obtained in common practice! to a Power curve is apparent. The general equation of such a curve is Y = axn, where n is negative. Taking logarithms: log y = a + n log x. Using a logarithmic scale, the equation of the recovery curve will be Y = A + bX. On this logarithmic basis! the recovery graph will be a straight line, using the same variables as in Fig. I; namely, the ash con-

Drilling operations on the Gulf of Mexico continental shelf are following two general plans. The first plan placed all buildings. equipment, and materials on a large platform while the second copies Lake Maracaibo drilling methods by placing a minimum of equipment on the platform and using a floating drilling tender or drill barge anchored adjacent to the platform in an attempt to take maximum advantage of flotation in an effort to reduce costs. A complete power rig, mud pits, pipe racks, and small auxiliaries have been placed on the platform as shown in Figure 1, to assure proper handling of drilling operations under the most adverse weather. This has the economic advantages of eliminating the fabrication of a large structure, a material reduction of rigging up time on each structure. and elimination of delay time on equipment while quarters and equipment placed on the tender are being rigged up. These factors have certainly proved their economic value in drill barge operations in the Louisiana and Texas coastal area. Naturally the heart of such an operation is the anchorage. This anchorage, to permit taking advantage of maximum economies. must hold the ship in a relatively fixed position under the following weather conditions: (1) Winter northwesters (2) Southeasterly gales (3) Severe rain squalls In hurricane weather all operations must be suspended regardless of method of operation and the floating tender will, if possible, be moved to a protected location. However, in case of an emergency the floating tender should be prepared to swing with the wind and seas on a single anchor as there is considerable doubt that either ship or anchorage could withstand the severe strains imposed by fixed anchorage in hurricane weather. Northwesters are reported to have developed wind gust velocities as high as sixty miles per hour and steady winds of approximately forty-five miles per hour. Fortunately these winds do not travel a great distance over water before arriving at our location, and, while they can possibly develop seas approximately eight feet high, the waves are short, and if taken on the bow or stern of a ship 250 feet or more in length they should not present a difficult problem. On the other hand southeast gales having a long fetch and maximum steady wind velocities of approximately thirty miles per hour can possibly develop long swells approximately twelve feet in height. These should develop the most severe anchorage problem. To combat these waves any workable anchorage plan should permit maneuvering the ship in such a manner as to head the bow or the stern into the seas and still maintain contact with the structure. Rain squalls develop wind gust velocities as great as sixty miles per hour. However, they are local and the seas have not been a source of great trouble. To permit continuous operation the anchorage must be able to withstand these winds broadside to the ship as the wind direction often changes radically in a very sliort time. The possibility of colloidal deposition of cinnabar has been neglected. In opalite deposits cinnabar exists in particles within or near the colloidal size range. Colloidal processes have been admitted to be operative in hot springs and low-temperature deposits similar to most cinnabar deposits. Mercuric sulphide sols are stable to elevated temperature and pressure, and in nature probably are chiefly affected by the electrolytes in solution, dilution of colloid, and presence of protective colloids as silica. The stability of mercuric sulphide sols to electrolyte is measured, and shown to be greatly increased by dilution and by the protective action of silica. Mercuric sulphide sols follow the Schulze-Hardy valency rule, therefore the precipitating power of complex mixtures of electrolytes can be computed roughly. The stability of mercuric sulphide sols is shown to be greater than the equivalent precipitating power of the electrolytes in a hot spring depositing mercuric sulphide. It is concluded that finely divided or earthy types of cinnabar are colloidally deposited. Possibility of Collodial Deposition While colloidal solution has been suggested as a means of transport for a number of minerals, such as the sulphides of antimony, arsenic, and iron, it has been neglected in connection with mercury. This is surprising because there exists positive evidence that cinnabar is present in certain deposits in particles of colloidal or near colloidal size. Colloidal transport could result from either the rapid dilution or neutralization of alkaline sulphide solution bearing mercury coming in contact with deep ground waters, or from colloidal solution near the original source and subsequent flow to the point of deposition unchanged. That the dilution of a mercuric alkaline sulphide solution will precipitate mercury sulphide in colloidal form has been demonstrated a number of times and is easily confirmed. The dilution hydrolyzes the alkaline sulphide Na2S to the corresponding hydroxide and hydrosulphide NaOH and NaHS, and the diminution of the concentration of alkaline sulphide reduces the solubility. It is not the contention of this writer that colloidal deposition is the mode of transport of mercuric sulphide in all mercury deposits, but that the stability of a mercuric sulphide sol, as demonstrated below, in waters that are similar to those that have deposited mercuric sulphide necessitates consideration of this possibility in many deposits, especially those of the hot-spring and so-called opalite type. Evidence of Colloidal Deposition Ross1 has shown that most deposits of quicksilver are formed at low temperatures and pressures, and probably by solutions that have relatively simple chemical compositions. In most cases the solutions are probably similar to those observed in hot springs, and in two instances—at Steamboat Springs, Nevada, and Sulphur Bank, California—hot springs have been reported by Becker as actually depositing cinnabar.2 Opalite deposits were believed by early investigators to be surface phenomena

Ball wear in wet grinding mills has been the subject of considerable discussion in the last few years. Its importance to millmen is obvious in view of the fact that ball wear may cost from 2 to 4 per ton of ore for the more fortunate operators and many times this cost when a refractory ore must be reduced to a fine state of comminution. Consequently, any factual information that may be obtained on the nature of ball wear may be applied to introduce changes leading to lower ball consumption and therefore also to lower costs. In 1940, while employed with the Britannia Mining and Smelting Co., Britannia Beach, B.C., I had occasion to investigate factors that might affect ball consumption. We performed a number of tests, which will be briefly described. These tests originated as a result of changing from a 3½-in. ball to a 2-in. ball of different type of manufacture and were motivated by the desire to obtain the best possible type of 2-in. ball. Our testing was helped by the fact that the company operated a one-ton electric furnace, so that it was quite easy to make steel changes. It should be emphasized at the beginning that these tests produced results that in their general application to milling should be interpreted qualitatively rather than quantitatively. As will be evident in the description of the method used in testing, the balls were subjected to an intermittent batch grinding treatment, which may have produced results in rate of steel wear that may not have an accurate correlation with steel consumption in full scale mill operation. However, with this bed and rather arbitrary method of testing, results were obtained that may be of some interest and may stimulate further work on this subject. Unfortunately, owing to pressure of war work, our tests, which we had intended to repeat on a continuous grinding operation, had to be discontinued. Method of Testing Tests Were made in a Small cylindrical mill, rotating at 72 r.P.m. Internal dimensions of the mill were 10½-in. dia. by 9 in. The cylindrical inner surface was lined with rubber and the two ends were formed by steel plates. A charge of 2000 grams dry feed and 2000 C.C. of water was added evev 2 hr., the mill being drained of pulp before the addition of each charge, by tilting and sluicing with water. The mill was run On afternoon and night shift for daily periods of about 15 hr. total grinding time, and each test lasted from 60 to 150 hr. This batch method of testing involved a higher average pulp temperature in the mill, which undoubtedly affected comparative results in Some of the tests. Hardness oF Ball vs. Wear In these tests, special "eutectoid" steel balls were used, some of which were chill-Cut and quenched, some sand-cast and quenched, and some sand-cast and annealed to a dead soft condition. This paper treats primarily of the valuation of developed coal properties by the method of capitalizing their estimated average future earnings. However, reference is also made to valuations of undeveloped coal lands and to various methods of appraisal other than by future earnings. Fundamental Valuation Principles Before discussing in detail coal property valuations, a few statements bearing on the general subject will be made to present certain of the writer's views on the question as a whole. 1. A certain property at a given time has but one true value. This is not universally admitted. The appraiser rather frequently finds that a coal owner has in mind three valuations for his holdings; one, the figure at which he feels they should be appraised for taxation purposes; another, the much higher one that should be used if a loan is to be negotiated on the property; and a third, intermediate between the other two, the price for which he would be willing to dispose of his holdings were they for sale. The last is usually nearest to the true value, and because this is so the statement is generally accepted that the fair value of such a property is the price arrived at by negotiation between a willing seller and a willing buyer who are otherwise disinterested. 2. Notwithstanding the foregoing, it is only very generally and approximately true that the proper measure of the value of a given developed' coal acreage is the unit or per-acre price for which one or more bodies of similar coal in the same district have been sold recently. To give a few reasons why such a measure of value can not be strictly applied, it may be noted: a. That sales are often forced by circumstances at times when the coal business is depressed and buyers can be found only for properties that are offered at figures far below their true value. b. That conversely, during periods of unusual prosperity, abnormally high prices are paid. Such conditions obtained several years ago when coal brokers, with very profitable contracts but no sure source of supply, were bidding against inexperienced or shortsighted operators for proper-

Ball wear in wet grinding mills has been the subject of considerable discussion in the last few years. Its importance to millmen is obvious in view of the fact that ball wear may cost from 2 to 4 per ton of ore for the more fortunate operators and many times this cost when a refractory ore must be reduced to a fine state of comminution. Consequently, any factual information that may be obtained on the nature of ball wear may be applied to introduce changes leading to lower ball consumption and therefore also to lower costs. In 1940, while employed with the Britannia Mining and Smelting Co., Britannia Beach, B.C., I had occasion to investigate factors that might affect ball consumption. We performed a number of tests, which will be briefly described. These tests originated as a result of changing from a 3½-in. ball to a 2-in. ball of different type of manufacture and were motivated by the desire to obtain the best possible type of 2-in. ball. Our testing was helped by the fact that the company operated a one-ton electric furnace, so that it was quite easy to make steel changes. It should be emphasized at the beginning that these tests produced results that in their general application to milling should be interpreted qualitatively rather than quantitatively. As will be evident in the description of the method used in testing, the balls were subjected to an intermittent batch grinding treatment, which may have produced results in rate of steel wear that may not have an accurate correlation with steel consumption in full scale mill operation. However, with this bed and rather arbitrary method of testing, results were obtained that may be of some interest and may stimulate further work on this subject. Unfortunately, owing to pressure of war work, our tests, which we had intended to repeat on a continuous grinding operation, had to be discontinued. Method of Testing Tests Were made in a Small cylindrical mill, rotating at 72 r.P.m. Internal dimensions of the mill were 10½-in. dia. by 9 in. The cylindrical inner surface was lined with rubber and the two ends were formed by steel plates. A charge of 2000 grams dry feed and 2000 C.C. of water was added evev 2 hr., the mill being drained of pulp before the addition of each charge, by tilting and sluicing with water. The mill was run On afternoon and night shift for daily periods of about 15 hr. total grinding time, and each test lasted from 60 to 150 hr. This batch method of testing involved a higher average pulp temperature in the mill, which undoubtedly affected comparative results in Some of the tests. Hardness oF Ball vs. Wear In these tests, special "eutectoid" steel balls were used, some of which were chill-Cut and quenched, some sand-cast and quenched, and some sand-cast and annealed to a dead soft condition. The present symposium on flotation machines provides a unique opportunity for group reappraisal of standard or habitual viewpoints. A symposium is by definition a trading post- for observations that might prove complementary when put together, thus leading to useful thoughts that might not have been evident from the original observations individually. The present paper, pertaining to power consumption in flotation, is deliberately an experiment of that kind. Data were solicited from the operating superintendents of several of the major flotation plants on this continent. The information received, covering a total of 14 separate operations in seven plants, has been collated in terms of power intensity; that is, the total power input per cubic foot of cell volume. This departs somewhat from the conventional expression of power per ton of ore treated, though the latter figure is also given for the plants concerned. Because of wartime restrictions, particularly in Canada, identifying names of plants and machines are withheld. Not as a firm conclusion, but as a tender for symposium discussion, the following points are made: 1. That flotation is a power operation in much the same sense as ball milling. 2. That contact time is the complement of power intensity and may be decreased as the latter is increased. 3. That a decrease in flotation power per ton of ore can result from an increase in power intensity. Analogy with Grinding In grinding, it has become axiomatic that the more the power put into a given operation, the greater the work performance. The analogous view is now proposed that the effectiveness of any flotation operation will be related to the mechanical energy usefully applied to that operation. Under this view, each increment of properly directed input energy should give either an increase in unit tonnage or an improvement in the metallurgical separation (concentrate grade or tailing grade), until either the theoretical limit imposed by mineral constitution or surface condition is reached, or until further increments of power become uneconomic under the law of diminishing returns. Thus, as in grinding, there are two forms of output that greater power input or improved utilization of power can produce. As for the law of diminishing returns, lower unit cost of power through improved generating efficiency in the past decade has pushed the limit back. Over and above this, however, there is strong indication in the operationg data herein presented that higher power intensity results in an actual economy of over-all power consumption. Like crushing and grinding, flotation accomplishes a rupture of the forces of molecular attraction, by taking particles from the common environment and placing them in the two separate environments of

Introduction Oil shale deposits have been exploited in various countries throughout the world, but generally with government aid. The oil-shale industry of Scotland perhaps is the oldest and best-known; the largest was conducted in Manchuria by the Japanese during World war 11 as a source of liquid fuels for military uses. In general, foreign oil-shale deposits that have been exploited are much lower grade than those in the western United States. Considerable interest began to be shown in western oil shales in 1916; the peak of activities was in 1923. The catlin operation, near Elko, Nevada, perhaps was the nearest approach in this country to an oil-shale enterprise on a commercial scale. Over 100 companies were formed, ostensibly for exploiting the oil shale; a large number of them, however, proved to be stock promotions only, which gave the embryo industry a black eye. The Bureau of Mines operated an experi-mental oil-shale retort plant near Rifle, Colorado, from September 1926 to June 1927 and again from April 1928 to July 1929, after which the plant was dismantled. By this time the East Texas oil fields had come ill and the country lost interest in substitute liquid fuels. During World War II the Nation again became concerned about the magnitude of its petroleum reserves. Congress (April 1944) directed the Bureau of Mines to build and operate demonstration plants to produce synthetic liquid fuels from coal, oil shales, and agricultural and other products; a five-year Program was authorized. *' a part of this program the Bureau of Mines has built, at Anvil Points near Rifle, Colorado, a retort plant and develOped an experimental mine to supply the plant with oil shale. An important part of the mining work at Rifle is to devise methods and select practices for mining the oil shale on a commercial scale at the lowest practicable cost. The product to be mined has a relatively low value, a fact that must be kept in in mind. The combined aim of those in charge of the mining and those in charge of retorting is to demonstrate that the shale oil can be produced at a cost per barrel corresponding to the current quotation for crude petroleum —or at least very close to it. Plans call for an uninterrupted flow of broken oil shale from the lace in the mine, through crushers, through the retorts and thence to the disposal dump. The disposal of the spent shale in the Ride area should present no unusual problem. Fox the past 20 years Alabama has probably led all other coal-producing districts in the proportion of coal prepared by wet washing. All rail mines, with one exception, and a high percentage of truck mines now wash all coal under 3 or 4 in. Most of this coal has been cleaned by jigs, though within the past few years one or more wettable plants have been installed for cleaning some of the coal from practically all the major seams. These tables supplement either single or multicell jigs usually for one of the following purposes: (I) to wash the finer sizes of raw coal, (2) to rewash the finer sizes of washed coal after they leave the jigs, (3) to retreat jig middling products. The main purpose of this paper is to present cleaning data and operating factors involved in the preparation by tables of the finer sizes of raw coal. The specific information and data pertain to the Mary Lee seam of coal as extracted at three of the mines of the Alabama By-Products Corporation, which produces coal for both by-product coke-oven consumption and the general steam market. The Mary Lee seam has long been recognized by coal-preparation authorities as presenting a very difficult ash-reduction problem. Washing characteristics and physical structure of the seam vary widely. Its thickness ranges from 32 in. with no rock parting to l00 in. with from one to three partings. Over the entire field the bed contains bands of bone and rash. These are distributed throughout the seam cross section. A portion of this bone or bony coal occurs as definite bands 1 in. or more thick; however, some bone is interlocked as layers within the coal and consequently breaks into flakes when the coal is broken. This material is relatively high in ash and its specific gravity varies widely. It has been observed that in most cases in the washing of Mary Lee coal from 10 to 18 per cent of the raw coal is within ±0.10 specific gravity of the attempted point of separation. Therefore with the average wet jig, only with extreme difficulty can a low-ash product be obtained without loss of much marketable coal in the refuse. Without entering into the controversial question as to whether modern washing equipment can efficiently handle simultaneously all sizes up to a given maximum, suffice it to state that the comparatively old-type jigs in service at the Alabama By-Products Corporation's mines could not clean the fine sizes satisfactorily. Therefore, in 1931 that company installed six diagonal-deck tables at the Barney mine, which were installed as an addition to a complete plant cleaning all coal below minus 3 in. The primary washed product is shipped as steam coal and another portion may be prepared as washed nut for domestic trade. These tables are washing 9 tons per hour of raw coal sized to ¼ in. to 0. The washed table coal is mixed with the 3 to ¼ -in. jig product to constitute a 3 in. to o steam coal.

In the presentation which follows, wash-ability curves, such as are commonly used in making studies preliminary to the cleaning of any coal or to the concentration of any mineral, have been reduced in each instance to a single straight line; thus all the most important characteristics of the coal or mineral are represented in a form more advantageous than that in which such data usually are shown. To obtain consistent results, float-and-sink data must be based on a single definite narrow size range, which may be designated "a coal unit." It will be shown that such units, each embodying a different size range, can be grouped to form what may be termed "a composite coal." A three-dimensional presentation will emerge, which will closely identify the coal, illustrate its characteristics in a new manner and explain many obscure facts. Float-and-sink Tests For the preliminary study of any cleaning or concentration problem, or in the control of any operation, float-and-sink tests must be made. The results of these tests are grouped in tabular form and then illustrated in various systems of curves; but if such a graphic representation is to have the utmost practical value, it must offer at least the following advantages: (I) It must be easier to read than the tabular results, and (2) it must be easy to plot, check and interpolate. The first requirement will be attained by reducing the number of curves to a minimum, and the second by some system of representation that will use only straight lines. Of the many washing curves now in use, only the "recovery curve," often known as the "composite curve"—a somewhat misleading term—will be considered; Any point on the recovery curve will show what percentage of weight of clean coal can be recovered when the mineral is washed at a certain specific gravity. As an example, the tests listed below Fig. I are illustrated in the drawing by a curve obtained by plotting (I) as abscissas the ash content of the coal recovered and (2) as ordinates the corresponding percentage of refuse discarded; but, in general practice, instead of writing down that weight, it is customary to set down its complement, which is the corresponding weight of coal recovered. From this curve can be deduced the information necessary for the solution of most practical problems. New Form of Graphic Presentation The resemblance of the recovery curve ill Fig. 1, or, for that matter, the recovery curve obtained in common practice! to a Power curve is apparent. The general equation of such a curve is Y = axn, where n is negative. Taking logarithms: log y = a + n log x. Using a logarithmic scale, the equation of the recovery curve will be Y = A + bX. On this logarithmic basis! the recovery graph will be a straight line, using the same variables as in Fig. I; namely, the ash con-

THE practice of introducing acid into oil wells to increase production of oil and gas has been in use since 1894, when it was first used in the Pennsylvania. oil fields30.? It is only since 1928 that it has been used to any extent in the Mid-Continent18. The process has proved successful in increasing production, at least temporarily, in depleted oil fields where the producing formation is highly calcareous and where water drive is not too pronounced. In the Zwolle field in Louisiana, where the producing horizon is a chalk, increases of 100 per cent have been recorded25. In north-central Texas, where the oil is produced from the Marble Falls limestone, equally pronounced increases have resulted3. The production also in some fields yielding oil from quartz sand cemented with calcite has been benefited. The evidence of actual increase in total recovery of oil, however, has been questioned by some engineers18. It has been pointed out that the results of the treatment of a well in a new district, where the process has never been tried out, can never be predicted with certainty, since other factors besides percentage of calcareous content: of the oil sand play a large part in determining the success of the method. Numerous articles have been published on acid treatment and on the effects of acid on limestone1-35, yet very little has been written con-cerning experimental work on the actual effect, of acid on capillary pores and larger oil-coated voids of oil sands. This is due partly to difficulties in duplicating field conditions in a laboratory and partly to the fact that the process has been carried out largely by contracting companies that have been unwilling to publish details of their results for fear of loss of business to competitors. The distribution of the oil phase in Berea sandstone resulting from increasing and decreasing the water saturation by imbibition was investigated Three types of distribution were recognized: trapped, normal and lagging. The amount of oil in each of these distributions was determined as a function of saturation by carrying out a miscible displacement in the oil phase under steady-state conditions of saturation. These conditions were maintained by flowing water and oil simultaneously in given ratios and by using a displacing solvent having essentially the same density and viscosity as the oil. A correlation shows the amount of trapped oil at any saturation to be directly proportional to the conventional residual oil saturation Sor The factor of proportionality is related to the fractional permeability to the water phase. Part of the oil which was not trapped was displaced in a piston-like manner (normal part) and part was eluted gradually (lagging part). The observed phenomena are more than of mere academic importance. Oil which is trapped may well provide the fuel essential for forward combustion and thus be beneficial. On the contrary, in tertiary recovery operations, it is this trapped oil which seems to make current techniques uneconomic. INTRODUCTION A typical oilfield may initially contain connate water and oil. After a period of primary production water often enters the field either from surrounding aquifers or from surface injection. During primary production evolution and establishment of a free gas saturation usually occurs. The effect and importance of this third phase is fully recognized. However, this investigation is limited to a two-phase system, one wetting phase (water) and one non-wetting phase (oil). The increase in water content of a water-wet system is termed imbibition. In a relative permeability-saturation diagram such as the one shown in Fig. 1, the initial conditions of the field would be represented by a point below a water saturation of about 35 per cent, i.e., where the imbibition and the drainage curves to the non-wetting phase nearly coincide. When water enters the field the relative permeability to oil decreases along the imbibition curve. At watered-out conditions the relative permeability to the oil becomes zero. At this point a considerable amount of oil. called residual oil, (about 35 per cent in Fig. 1) remains unrecovered. Any attempt to produce this oil will require that its saturation be increased. In Fig. 1 this would mean retracing the imbibition curve upwards. In addition, processes like alcohol and fire flooding, which can be employed at any stage of production, involve the complete displacement of connate water and an increase, or imbibition. of water saturation ahead of the displacing front. Thus, in several types of oil production it is the imbibition-relative permeability curve which rules the flow behavior. For this reason a knowledge of the distribution of the non-wetting phase, as obtained through imbibition, whether "coming down" or "going up" on the imbibition curve, is important.
